My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin There are daffodils and crocuses in bloom and the green grass of spring is appearing after the mix of sun and showers of the past week.

I don't think it's my imagination that people are in higher spirits with the change of season.

Last week I had the opportunity to meet some strong young people with inspirational stories to share.

I spent two hours at the Oosterwijk family's kitchen table in Fort Macleod listening to the four eldest daughters – Gerdine, Caroline, Elizabeth and Hanna – describe what happened on the home front while their parents were missing.

Anja, the girls' mom, was pleased that my focus was on what their children faced and how proud she is of them.

I also visited with Shaylee Zeller and her mom, Shelley Schnack, at the Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary where Shaylee has been a patient since October.

I was planning to include Shaylee's story in this issue, but decided to hold off until next week. She has a big day coming up Friday, when she'll be allowed to leave the hospital to come home for her high school graduation from Livingstone School in Lundbreck.

Her grad dress is hanging in her hospital room, and Shaylee can't wait for

the big day. She has the honour of being chosen class valedictorian, which will make the day even more special.

This week's issue includes the last of the Rick Hansen Relay stories. I hope you've enjoyed learning more about some of our local difference makers and inspirational people.

I had an interesting chat with Terry Tenove, formerly of Nanton, about his experience with the relay.

The conversation made me really stop and think about how much we take for granted in our lives and how unexpectedly things can change.

There wasn't a hint of self-pity evident as Terry spoke of his injury and the adjustment of moving from a young man heavily involved in sports, to a young man learning to live as a quadriplegic.

Siblings supporting each other while their parents were missing, a teenager with a rare condition without a prescribed treatment and a young man determined to finish his university degree despite a spinal cord injury – these are important stories to share.

The strength that comes from the love of their families, friends and communities has been instrumental in keeping spirits high and outlooks positive for each of them.

Thank you for reading, for caring, and for sharing.

Honouring Air Cadets

On May 6, the Bomber Command Museum of Canada in Nanton will honour the young men and women of the Royal Canadian Air Cadet program.

Air Cadets from Alberta and British Columbia will spend the day touring the museum and participating in various demonstrations and presentations.

Guest speakers are Darlene LaRoche and retired Lt. Col. T.L. (Tom) Sand.

A parade and march will take place at 1:30 p.m. At 2:30 p.m., the Lancaster Merlin engine will be started up for the first of six scheduled run-ups this spring and summer. Flypasts will begin at 3:00 to round out the afternoon.

Everyone is welcome to attend. Come have a look around the museum and show your support for the Air Cadets.

The museum is located on Highway 2 southbound at 17th Street in Nanton.

Three days in Costa Rica

By Linda Hammond and Diane Miller Yup, holes again. We had six to finish and we got them done. The head supervisor on the job said we made the best holes out of any group that has been through there. Our Canadian group rocks.

In the afternoon, we went to visit the family that has been working with us all week.

It is a three-kilometre drive deeper into the jungle, half a kilometre from the Nicaraguan border.

The school kids in the home walk to school every day. It takes them an hour and a half, one way. The terrain is very hilly. They are more than willing to do this because they know school will bring them more jobs. The new house they will receive is a block away from the school.

The current house, with more than 18 people living in it, was like a big barn with a floor. There were spaces between the roof and the walls – that is where their shoes were

shoved in. The bedrooms were small and had cattle feed stacked up in the corners, rolled rice. The beds were leaning up against the walls so they could move about the rooms throughout the day.

The kitchen had one wooden counter, with a few items on top, and a fridge. Against the fridge were bags of rice that would feed them in the months ahead. The bathroom was an outhouse, the oven was outside, the common area where they watch TV and just hang out was outside.

The family has to travel down the hill to the water source to wash themselves and their clothes, and then travel back up the hill to hang the items to dry on the fence. A fence that they use to keep the cattle and pigs in (which were passing by and sending dust up in the air).

The yard itself was beautiful, but the house does not have much. The supper meal was an iguana which was laid out by a pot in

the kitchen. Wow. Diane thought the house was solidly built, clean and tidy. I really like Floribeth and all the effort she put in to get the house ready for us and impress us. Very simple – the kitchen sink, oven – pretty rough.

The only running water is a bit from a tap that sprinkles water. They don't have any money to get their own place, let alone enough money for food. The only jobs they are able to have would be working on the farm they are living on. Everything else is too far away. Habitat is giving them something they would never be able to get on their own.

The funny thing was listening to the cows get all excited when the spider monkeys came through. The cows really protected their calves – lots of bawling from the cows, and screaming from the monkeys passing in the trees.

Best part: Diane – having time for the pain in my hands to not hurt so bad. Had a half-day to let things heal. Linda – seeing that the Habitat homes will get the kids closer to the school, and the moms who go to school at night. Also that their homes are like we would use if we were roughing it out in the mountains. I mean roughing it.

We are so lucky to be able to do what we want when we want. These people are not able to do that. They can travel only as far as they can walk. They cannot move somewhere else because they don't know anyone, nor would they have any place to stay. They have to change jobs if they move three kilometres down the road; they walk for hours just to go to school.

We can hop in the car to go visit friends or get groceries. Imagine being out on a farm without a vehicle – you'd have to walk or hitch a ride to get into town. We are very fortunate.

It was like living in the times of the old frontier – no toilet, no hot water, food came from the land, a family stuck together. These people are working to live, not to have a career. They want food for their family to eat today, not tomorrow, and they need to work in order to make that happen.

I guess you can say it was a humbling day for us.

"We prayed and asked for guidance, and something drew us to the road. That something was God," Anja says.

The snow was soft to begin with, but by 2 a.m. Jacob, who was leading the way, was falling through the snow and they found themselves needing more and more rest. At first they had been stopping every half hour, but by this time they needed a short break every 10 steps.

Jacob was dressed in decent boots for walking and had a sweater under his coat, but Anja was in dress boots and not dressed as warmly.

They walked through rain and falling snow in the total darkness of night.

"I believed Jacob when he told me there were no bears to worry about," says Anja. "I was scared the next morning when we found bear tracks."

While Jacob and Anja walked in the cold night, their children's worry intensified back home. The authorities had been alerted, but it would be hours yet before a formal search could be organized.

Sunday morning, Gerdine contacted her sister in Veenendaal, Holland to let her know what was happening, and arrangements were made for her to fly home.

Family friends immediately offered support, and Arlene van Beek and her children stayed at the Oosterwijk home while her husband joined the search effort.

"It was good the kids were here," Gerdine says. "There were moments of questions and some crying, but mostly they just played. We were kept busy and that helped to keep our spirits up."

As search efforts were being organized early Sunday morning, Jacob and Anja were still walking in the cold.

Around 10 a.m. they found a cabin. They attempted to light a fire in an old stove outside,

and tried to get in through the mouldings around the doors and windows. Eventually they realized they had no choice but to break in.

"It took him about a half hour to break the window with a shovel," Anja says. "He really didn't want to break it."

Once inside, they melted snow and found sugar to add to the water. They were fortunate to find some macaroni as well.

For now, they needed to warm up and to rest.

Pincher Creek Search and Rescue leaders had their hands full organizing the extraordinarily high number of volunteers anxious to help with the search effort.

In all, over 200 volunteers searched for Jacob and Anja by land and by air over the course of three days.

The couple's children were surrounded by supportive friends and strangers from their community and church, and reporters from local to national levels of media.

"The reporters weren't too pushy, and always asked first if it was OK to talk to us," Gerdine says.

"We were really busy finding out things about Mom and Dad for the search and rescue profile and the RCMP missing persons report. We even needed to find out what kind of tires were on their vehicle!"

And, of course, the phone rang non-stop.

Elizabeth hadn't slept at all Saturday night.

"It was driving me nuts and I had to go out looking for them," she says. "I went to Fernie and searched for several hours, but after that there wasn't time between dealing with the RCMP and the press."

The concern was mutual – Anja and Jacob were desperate to make contact with their children to let them know they were all right.

"The drive to reach our children was very strong," Jacob says.

At 2:30 Sunday afternoon they set out again in an attempt to reach the highway, but after

two hours they returned to the cabin, with overstretched ligaments in Jacob's knee causing him extreme pain.

They decided to leave a "sign of life" and wrote all of their personal information on a piece of paper. They also used lumber to create a huge SOS symbol in the snow.

"A few searchers who know me well were trying to think of me and what I might do," Jacob says. "Those searchers came very close to us."

Sunday turned to Monday.

Community and church groups gathered in support and prayer as there was still no sign of Jacob and Anja. The four oldest children – Gerdine, Caroline, Elizabeth and Hanna – calmed Jake, Esther and Benjamin and met continuously with the RCMP and reporters while contending with their own worries and fears.

A Facebook page was set up, and prayer meetings were held all over the world as the family's plight received international attention. "Forty ladies in New Zealand were praying for us," Jacob says. "Everyone worked together, and we felt it."

Gerdine was praying as well. Over and over she asked for her parents to be kept safe and free from pain. "I felt the strong connection with my kids, and I know she helped to relieve my pain," Jacob adds.

The first bit of positive news came on Tuesday, with confirmation that Jacob and Anja had been at Subway in Fernie on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. This would assist the searchers with logistics.

Jacob found a CB radio Tuesday morning and Anja tried several times to send out a message but received no reply.

At 3:30 that afternoon her plea of "Can you hear me?" received a reply from a Galloway trucker who promised to send help.

At 5 p.m. the search and rescue helicopter found them and transported them to the Fernie hospital for a quick checkup.

By Shannon Robin The community of Nanton deserves a big thumbs up for the number of people who came out to support Terry Tenove, Sue Lambert and JoAnn Sears at the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay.

People lined the streets, waved from businesses and honked from their vehicles.

Nanton and Stavely had shown the strongest community support of the relay as it travelled from Fort Macleod north.

This was the eighth and final segment of the relay I followed over the course of three days, and was Day 184 of the relay itself.

Terry Tenove was first to carry the medal.

He is well-known in the community and was happy to be home to participate.

Oct. 7, 2010 Terry was injured while par-

ticipating in a skating workshop as part of his education studies at the University of Alberta.

Terry says that during an exercise he had done a hundred times, “one guy got pushed over and onto the back of my head. I knew right away I had broken my neck.”

The spinal cord injury has changed Terry’s life, but he speaks about it with no self-pity.

“I’ve learned to deal with what I’ve got,” he says. “Nothing prepared me to be a quad and it’s been a long transition.”

Terry is nine weeks away from finishing his education degree, with a major in physical education and a minor in special education.

“It’s been on the back burner until I could figure out me,” he says. “I needed to learn more about the quadriplegic world and things that can help me.”

“I played every single sport and now I’ll need to reinvent myself as a teacher and as a person,” he says. “It will be difficult to change from a kinesthetic learning and teaching style to whatever is going to work.”

Attending his brother’s recent graduation has provided Terry with some extra motivation to add to the spark that was lit through his participation in the Rick Hansen Relay.

“The relay helped me get focused and since then I’ve been better,” Terry says. “I’m starting to call people and to get in touch with people and have realized that I was kind of lonely.”

STB Mailbox The three local Lions clubs are hosting our second annual Purina Walk for Dog Guides on Sunday, May 6. Registration is at 2:30 p.m. at the Pincher Creek arena. These walks are the primary source of funds for the Lions Foundation of Canada’s dog guide program, which trains five types of dog guides: vision, hearing, special needs, seizure response and autism assistance.

The Lions Foundation of Canada has been training and providing dogs to Canadians for 28 years. There is no government funding, so the foundation’s dog guides school in Oakville, Ont. operates solely on corporate, community and individual donations.

Bill Brown, formerly of Pincher Creek, has been a Lion since 1976. He and Lynda initiated the first Lethbridge Walk for Dog Guides in in 2002, which raised $8,500 and has increased every year. The walk raised $50,700 in 2011.

Pincher Creek is a satellite of Lethbridge and raised over $7,000 in 2011.

The goal this year is to regain the No. 1 spot from Toronto. Let’s go in 2012!

Joining Terry for the relay were his godchildren Quinton and Bryn Scott-Holba, and his friend Erica McMasters.

“It was perfect having Erica along for the point when I needed a push up the hill,” he says with a chuckle.

“The highlight was walking through a town where the people celebrating and waving me through were not just randoms on the street, but are people that know me and that I have known my whole life,” Terry says.

“Plus doing it with my friends’ kids was awesome. They were giggling from start to finish which set a good mood.”

Terry passed the medal to Sue Lambert and continued on to finish the entire relay.

Sue was participating in the relay from outside the area, and I wasn't successful in contacting her.

Although she wasn’t a local participant, small-town hospitality showed through as people supported her with waves and cheers.

Last to carry the relay medal was JoAnn

Sears, who was nominated by Brad Mason on behalf of the Town of Nanton.

JoAnn is an active volunteer in Nanton. She recently chaired the committee to replace the roof on the local arena, and was active with the arena expansion back in the 1990s as well.

Her commitment to the community shows in her long-term dedication to the Nanton Nite Rodeo in her position as secretary-treasurer.

“It was a great experience,” JoAnn says of the relay. “It was very well run and organized.”

As the relay participants were driven to their starting points they got to watch a motivational video about Rick Hansen and his accomplishments.

“It was great to hear more of Rick Hansen’s story through the video,” JoAnn says. “It motivated me to go home and watch and read more about him.”

JoAnn had known about her selection as a medal bearer for only a couple of days before the event, and felt the majority of the promotion of the event had come about through the efforts of the Tenove family and her own.

“I think there would have been more out to watch, but people just didn’t seem to be aware,”

she says.

JoAnn was surprised at the emotional intensity of having the medal placed around her neck, and counts that as a highlight of the day.

“It was also wonderful walking with Terry,” she says. “Community support for Terry is awesome, and his homecoming was almost an event in itself.”

The relay wrapped up on the steps of the town office, and people quickly scattered and went about their business.

I had an opportunity to have a sit-down visit with the relay crew over lunch before they dashed off to their next stop.

I was glad to let them know how inspiring the three days had been for me and how much I appreciated the chance to have the unique behind-the-scenes view they shared with me.

Three days, eight relays and 30 participants – each with a story to share.

We should consider ourselves lucky to have so many awesome people in our communities.

Let's get happy Pincher Creek Children's World Daycare is a non-profit charitable society that provides care to children from infancy to 12 years. We have two locations and provide early childhood education for over 100 families in Pincher Creek and surrounding area.

"We were trying not to get too excited, and everyone was shaking," Caroline says.

The confirmation call came at 5:45 and the family rejoiced. They were able to speak with their parents by phone a half hour later.

Anja and Jacob arrived home at about 10 p.m. Tuesday.

They were greeted by a throng of over 200 people who had gathered on the street and in the yard to celebrate their safe return.

Hugs and tears were exchanged in an emotional reunion between the parents and their children.

Jacob made an effort to shake everyone's hand in thanks and appreciation for what they had done for his family.

There were streamers and balloons and singing in the street – an amazing homecoming.

"I was so full of energy and excited," he says.

"Even the next day I was full of energy, but then later I was tired as all the emotions took over."

All nine members of the Oosterwijk family shared the high of the reunion.

Jacob was interviewed by CBC and then well-wishers and reporters left the family to reconnect.

The following days were full of appointments with the RCMP and media interview requests.

At the heart of the story is a genuine thankfulness for the support of everyone who searched, prayed or helped the kids.

"Gerdine was very calm under immense stress," her dad says.

In reflection, Jacob says, "We realized we were too far for the imagination of the rescuers and this pushed us to find our way home."

The parents have questioned the responsibility of their decision to cruise the back roads, and won't be doing so again without being prepared for an emergency and staying in touch with their children if there is a change in plans.

Thursday was a day of debriefing for the fam-

ily with the phone and Internet unplugged.

"Every day is better," Jacob says. "Talking about things with lots of people helps."

"Our strongest concern was about our kids and the idea that they would think they were orphans while we knew we were safe."

Everyone is back to work or to school and for those of us outside of the story, life carries on.

But for the girls who held the fort, things have changed.

"We're a pretty open family and we've been talking about things a lot, but the positive outcome doesn't change what everyone went through," says Caroline.

The younger children seem (at least from outward appearances) to be the least affected.

Anja and Jacob weren't home when I first arrived at the house, and I expected to see the youngest cling to them when they returned.

That wasn't the case. They smiled, shared a hug and went about their business.

It will take some time before things settle into a new sense of normal after this experience.

Every member of the family is grateful for the happy ending and to all of the people who made it happen.

"We're thankful for everyone who gave so much. We felt their power even when they didn't realize they were sending it," Anja says.

"We're more aware of how involved people are with our family and of community power."

Mind over matter is a helpful tool. Jacob says that the macaroni they ate for three days tasted better and better as they used their imaginations to think about adding goodies such as tomato and paprika to their plain dish of pasta.

Hanna sums up the experience in saying, "We didn't have time to think about how bad or sad the situation was – that came after."

"Everyone thinks things should be all good because Mom and Dad are home, but it's not really like that," she says.

"I keep thinking and reliving it. Life is back to normal, but I am not yet. It's kind of like watching a movie – it's very unreal."

"Butterfly in the Typewriter: The Tragic Life of John Kennedy Toole"

by Cory MacLauchlin (Da Capo, $26) Reviewed by Larry Cox This is the intriguing story of John Kennedy Toole, a New Orleans-based writer who with a single novel helped change the face of modern American fiction.

After studying English at Columbia University and teaching at the University of Southwestern Louisiana, Toole accepted a position at Hunter College, where, at 22, he was the school's youngest professor. In 1961, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and stationed in Puerto Rico. There, he began work on what would be his masterpiece, a novel he titled "A Confederacy of Dunces."

Following his discharge, Toole returned to New Orleans and began submitting his manuscript to publishers, including Robert Gottlieb, a senior editor at Simon and Schus-

ter. After numerous rejections and troubled by paranoia and depression, Toole committed suicide on an inconspicuous road outside of Biloxi, Miss., in March 1969. He was 31 years old.

Toole's unpublished work might have remained forgotten had it not been for his rather determined mother, Thelma Toole.

She found the manuscript atop an armoire in her late son's room and spent the next five years trying to find a publisher. She badgered Walker Percy, a faculty member at Loyola University in New Orleans, to read it, and when he finally did he was dumbfounded by how good Toole's work was. Three years later, "A Confederacy of Dunces" was published by Louisiana State University Press with a first printing of 2,500 copies. The book quickly attracted international acclaim.

In 1981, 12 years after his tragic suicide, Toole was posthumously awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for his novel. To date, the book has sold more than 2 million copies and been translated into two dozen languages. Many believe it is an American masterpiece.

By Steve Becker THE BETTER WAY There is a lot of guesswork in bridge, but a substantial amount of it can be overcome by careful play.

Take this case where you're in four spades and West leads a heart. When dummy comes down, you see that your only possible losers are a heart, a diamond and two clubs.

You realize that the diamond loser can be eliminated with a successful diamond finesse, and that one of the two club losers also can be avoided if you guess which way to take the two-way finesse against the jack.

You may therefore feel that the outcome depends largely on whether or not this is your lucky day. But if you consider the matter more carefully, you realize that making the contract is an absolute certainty, and that it does not matter how the missing cards are divided.

Accordingly, you win the heart lead with the

ace, cash the K-A of trumps and play a heart from dummy. East wins with the jack and presumably returns a low diamond.

Now, though it might go against your natural instincts, you go up with the ace, deliberately rejecting the opportunity to finesse the queen.

You do this because by doing so you guarantee the contract 100 percent. Next you ruff your last heart in dummy and then exit with a diamond.

At this point, it does not matter which opponent wins the diamond. The next play is bound to be either a club, which automatically eliminates one of your two potential club losers, or a diamond or heart, which allows you to ruff in dummy as you discard a club from your hand. is tightly focused on Harrelson and his portrayal of a irredeemable, delusional man. Harrelson makes this dirty cop captivating.

PHOTO: Liam Neeson in "The Grey" PICKS OF THE WEEK "The Grey" (R) -- A plane carrying Alaskan oil-rig roughnecks goes down in the frigid wilderness just as the wolves are getting hungry. Fortunately, Liam Neeson's character survived the crash.

Neeson plays Ottway, a man hired by the oil rig to keep wolves and bears away. Yet when they've crashed into the tundra and wolves are circling the survivors, some people still want to argue with the expert.

The trailer and posters suggest that this is a movie about Liam Neeson punching wolves. The script also gets a bit philosophical without getting too corny or heavy-handed. For a movie called "The Grey," things sure get dark. Well worth checking out for a tale of grizzled determination and man-versus-wolf survival.

After three boys explore a mysterious hole in the ground, they come out with new psychokinetic powers that they use for tomfoolery. As their abilities grow, dark sides come out and bonds are put to the test.

The whole thing is shown from the perspective of a handheld camera that the teens always seem to have with them.

The found-footage approach has been used quite a lot lately, and it's hard to say if it brings anything to this film. What is here is an original movie with an original take on something we've otherwise seen before.

"Chronicle" (PG-13) -- A few high-school boys develop mental powers, and it's all fun and games -- for a while. This refreshing, character-driven movie has supernatural powers, but veers away from

"Rampart" (R) -- Woody Harrelson plays Dave Brown, a Los Angeles cop with a corrupt sense of duty. Brown's life spirals out of control after he gets caught on film viciously beating a suspect. The film

DOG OF THE WEEK "One for the Money" (PG-13) -- Based the first book in a long series of quirky mysteries, this film misses all the good parts about detective stories and just gives us the cliches and one-note characters. Stephanie Plum (Katherine Heigl) is a sassy Jersey girl who gets down on her luck and takes a job as a bounty hunter.

Her first assignment is to track down Morelli (Jason O'Mara), a former cop who had a high-school fling with Stephanie.

It's a detective-themed romantic comedy romp with the lady from "Grey's Anatomy," so what could go wrong? The banter is excruciating, the mystery plot is dull and the Jersey accents are so bad they must be crossing some line. Even those who like Heigl will find her as irritating as the rest of us.

Make a Picture-Perfect Storybook for Mom When I got going on this year's spring cleaning, the ritual started with my laptop. There weren't any dust bunnies between the keys, but when I opened my digital photo library, you would think I was a likely candidate for a TV show on hoarding. I needed to get the chaos under control, but the organizing task seemed more daunting than tackling closets or even our garage.

I signed up for a group iPhoto session at my local Apple retail store and happily got support, but not just the techie kind.

As we attendees introduced ourselves, the woman next to me unapologetically admitted that her digital photo library had surged like a tsunami from 5,000 to 22,000 since the birth of her grandchild. I felt better already.

Inspired to clear out my digital clutter, I decided to tame the images while on a visit to my 87-year-old mom's home in California. "I've never seen that one," she'd say over my shoulder as I clicked through pictures of three years of milestones, meals and family trips. Once I had flagged 50 of her "must haves," including downloads I snitched from her grandkids' Facebook pages, it hit me that instead of

making prints, I could secretly "publish" a photo book for a unique Mother's Day gift.

Easy to create through computer programs, photo-sharing sites, discount stores and pharmacies, a collection of photos can come together in a nifty thin volume starting at $10. Once you upload the photos to the Web, it takes about a week to get the picture-perfect storybook for Mom. Think of more themes for other reasonably priced books that will get your photos out of hiding. It's another way to make them worth taking in the first place. Here are some ideas: --New baby in the house? Keep a file of the best shots of the year, and make a book annually on your child's birthday. Send it to grandparents and greatgrandparents. As their annual collection grows, enjoy thumbing through the photo yearbooks with your kids when you stop by for a visit.

--Vacation memories 2012. Create a book this year and in years to come featuring a trip you enjoy with your kids or with extended family. Make copies for each family for a holiday gift this December.

--Mark a 2012 milestone. How Diabetes Is Diagnosed DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have a friend whose glucose tests taken in the morning range from 140 (7.8) to 200 (11) and are never in the normal range. He is constantly thirsty and has other diabetes symptoms. His doctor ordered a hemoglobin A1C test, which came back as 5.2.

The doctor told him that they no longer do the fasting blood sugar test, only the HbA1C, and that he is not diabetic, since his test is normal.

Has testing for diabetes changed? Should my friend consult another doctor? -- L.P. ANSWER: Up until 2010, doctors diagnosed diabetes on the basis of blood sugar (actually plasma glucose). A relatively new test, hemoglobin A1C, HbA1C or just A1C, has been added to the criteria for both diagnosing

diabetes and monitoring diabetes control in the past year or so. Hemoglobin is a large molecule inside all red blood cells that grabs oxygen from the lungs and releases it to all parts of the body as blood circulates. Blood sugar coats hemoglobin. Since red blood cells last 120 days, the percentage of hemoglobin coated with sugar indicates how well-controlled diabetes is. An acceptable control level is one that is 7 percent or less.

Fasting blood sugar, the specimen taken after at least eight hours of not eating, is still used for diagnosing diabetes. A level of 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher lands one in diabetes territory.

A second way to diagnose diabetes is to give a person 75 grams of glucose (sugar) to eat and test the blood two hours later. A value of 200 (11.1) qualifies as diabetes.

Now a third way of making the diagnosis is employing HbA1C. One selling point for using it is that there's no requirement for fasting.

HbA1C of 6.5 or greater makes the diagnosis.

Your friend is a diabetic. His fasting blood sugar qualifies him as being one. Furthermore, he has a diabetes symptom -- perpetual thirst.

He probably has to urinate frequently, another diabetes symptom. The fact that his HbA1C is normal doesn't cancel these facts. That test is only one of three. He should see another doctor.

A blanket statement on transmission, therefore, is impossible. The pneumococcus (NEWmoe-KOK-us) bacterium is a prominent cause of pneumonia, especially in adults and older adults. This germ can be spread in droplets coming from a cough or sneeze. However, 24 hours of treatment renders the patient no longer a transmitter.

Spinach and Cheddar Whole Wheat Strata

Huevos Rancheros

Slices of firm whole-wheat bread are layered with frozen chopped spinach and sharp cheddar cheese, then baked in a light egg custard. Assemble a day ahead, refrigerate overnight, and bake the next morning for a delicious brunch.

Or assemble and bake the same day and serve with a salad for a light dinner.

Spice up Mother's (or Father's) Day brunch with this zesty Huevos Rancheros recipe.

4 teaspoons Dijon mustard 8 slices firm whole-wheat sandwich bread 1/2 cup (2 ounces) shredded sharp cheddar cheese 1 package (10 ounces) frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry 2 cups low-fat (1 percent) milk 4 large eggs 4 large egg whites 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1. Grease 8 by 8-inch glass baking dish. Spread 1/2 teaspoon mustard on 1 side of each bread slice. Place 4 slices bread in baking dish, mustard side up. Top with half of cheese, all of spinach, then remaining cheese. Place remaining bread slices in dish, mustard side up.

2. In medium bowl, with wire whisk or fork, beat milk and remaining ingredients until blended. Slowly pour egg mixture over bread slices. Prick bread with fork at 1-inch intervals and press slices down so egg mixture can be absorbed more easily.

3. Cover dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate at least 30 minutes or overnight to allow egg mixture to be absorbed thoroughly.

4. To bake, preheat oven to 350 F. Uncover baking dish and bake strata 55 minutes to 1 hour, until knife inserted 1 inch from center comes out clean. Remove strata from oven and let stand 5 minutes before serving.

• Each serving: About 400 calories, 11g total fat (4g saturated), 155mg cholesterol, 640mg sodium, 39g total carbs, 5g dietary fiber, 18g protein.

1 can (19-ounce) black beans, rinsed and drained 1 1/4 cups (about 11 ounces) mild or mediumhot salsa 4 large eggs 3 ounces shredded Mexican cheese blend 3/4 cups chopped fresh cilantro or parsley leaves, for garnish Warm flour tortillas (optional) 1. In 10-inch skillet, mix black beans, salsa and 1/4 cup water. Heat to boiling over high heat, stirring frequently.

2. Break eggs, 1 at a time, into custard cup and slip into skillet on top of bean mixture. Reduce heat to medium-low; cover skillet and simmer 5 minutes or until whites are completely set and yolks begin to thicken or until eggs are cooked to desired firmness.

3. To serve, sprinkle bean mixture and eggs with shredded cheese. Garnish with chopped cilantro. Serve with warm tortillas if you like.

• Keep your dishcloths and sponges germ-free and smelling sweet. Once weekly, soak them overnight in a few cups of water to which you've added a tablespoon or so of bleach. It will keep them from developing a mildew smell.

• "To keep mixes from bunching up on the beaters of my mixer, I spray them with a little canola oil right before mixing.

It isn't enough to affect the recipe, but I think it helps them do a better job. And I don't have to stop the mixer so often to scrape the dough from the beaters." -R.V. in Oklahoma • To clean tea-stained cups, use a couple of drops of dishwasher detergent. Stir and let set, then scrub out. It should wipe right out.

By Samantha Mazzotta Pruning Tips Q: I haven't pruned many of my hedges and trees in several years, and some of them have grown wild and ragged-looking. If they're past the blooming stage, is it safe to trim them? Also, any tips to make this task easier? -- Carol in Oklahoma A: Trying to tackle all of the shrubbery and trees in your yard can be daunting, even when it hasn't been several years since their last pruning. The best thing to do is take an initial tour of your yard with notebook in hand. Mentally split the yard into several sections, and then note what needs to be done in each: trimming, pruning or even removal of foliage.

Next, tackle each section one at a time. Depending on your schedule, you may need to do one section each day. A particularly foliage-heavy section may take an entire weekend. You might need help from friends or relatives to take care of large or excessively high hedges, meaning you'll need to plan a time for them to come over. And if a tree needs complex trimming -- for example, its branches are encroaching on the roof or on power lines -- you'll need to arrange for a professional tree trimmer to inspect it, provide an estimate and do the work.

Pruning on your own takes a little practice, but don't worry too much about mistakes, as they will eventually grow out. Plants that have already bloomed can be pruned without a problem, and plants or trees that are still blooming are, by this time of year, safe to trim.

As you'll likely be piling up a lot of branches and limbs, check with your local government about proper disposal of yard waste. Most have programs in place, such as scheduled pickup dates during the growing season, and guidelines for containers or bags that the trimmed branches should be placed in. If you hire a tree trimmer, be sure to ask how branches will be disposed of, and if that cost is included in the estimate.

HOME TIP: Keep hedge and tree-trimming equipment sharp, clean and lightly oiled so that they cut branches cleanly and efficiently.

1 ripe tomato, chopped 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon instant-style oatmeal or old fashioned rolled oats Blend all ingredients in a food processor or blender until just combined into a paste.

Apply to blemishes on the skin, making sure mixture is thick enough to stay in place. Leave on skin 10 minutes. Remove mixture with damp washcloth, rinse and pat dry.

CHOCOLATE FACIAL MASK This creamy mask is an excellent moisturizer, leaving skin baby soft. Recommended for normal skin.

1/3 cup cocoa powder (not Dutch processed) 3 teaspoons heavy cream 2 teaspoons cottage cheese 1/4 cup honey 3 teaspoons instant oatmeal

Mix all ingredients together in food processor or blender. Smooth mixture onto face. Relax for 10 minutes. Wash off with warm water and pat face dry.

STRAWBERRY HAND AND FOOT EXFOLIANT Strawberries contain a natural fruit acid that aids exfoliation.

8-10 strawberries 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon of coarse salt, such as Kosher Salt or Sea Salt Mix all ingredients together into a paste using food processor or blender. Use mixture over a sink or place feet in empty tub, as the paste is messy. Massage mixture onto hands and feet. Leave on hands and feet for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse and pat dry.

Dog Isn't Welcome at Wedding Venues DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My fiance and I are getting married at the end of June, and we want "Suzee," our bichon frise, to be an important part of the ceremony. We agreed that she would be present as we exchange our vows, and will be in our wedding pictures.

The trouble is that we cannot find a venue that allows dogs, other than service dogs, inside. And we even had to drop one pastor who said that he would not allow Suzee to be present when he led the ceremony! But it can be difficult finding a venue that

accepts pets.

You should hit the Internet to search for venues that welcome dogs. Dogfriendly.com is a comprehensive guide to hotels and other facilities where dogs are allowed. Another site, vowwowwow.wordpress.com, is specifically for owners looking to include their pets in their wedding ceremony. Other sources are business review sites like Yelp.com, or word of mouth from friends and neighbors.

Even before you settle on a venue, start planning how Suzee will be incorporated into not just the ceremony, but the entire day. You and your fiancee will be incredibly busy and distracted. Heidi Ganahl, CEO of Camp Bow Wow, advises couples to choose a trusted friend, or hire a professional pet sitter, to be Suzee's caretaker throughout the event.

Her attendant won't just walk Suzee down the aisle to you, but also make sure she is fed, exercised, monitored and has enough "quiet time" so she doesn't get stressed out.
