David Zech and his guide Indiana enjoyed a Sunday afternoon walk along the banks of the creek at the Purina Walk for Dog Guides in Pincher Creek. Indiana acts as David’s eyes and is one of 10 dog guides in southern Alberta. They travelled from Lethbridge for the event, along with Calvin DeWit and Bill Brown and their dogs Breyer and Jax. “Well over a hundred people participated in the walk, with almost 50 contributing to the fundraising,” says organizer Earl Johnson. The final tally should come to about $12,000.

My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin This week is all about Mother’s Day. School children have been busy creating cards that will be treasured for years, visiting greenhouses, making special gifts and thinking about how to treat their mom like a queen this Sunday.

And isn’t it true that we all think we have the best mom in the world?

I miss my mom.

When I moved to Pincher Creek just over two years ago, I found myself 11 hours away from my family and my hometown of Nipawin, Sask.

I had always lived close enough to be able to zip home for supper on the spur of the moment, and never missed family birthdays or other special days such as Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. For Mother’s Day, we often wandered through the greenhouses and then were treated to a barbecued dinner by a fellow in an amazing coat or a Superman apron, depending on the weather.

This year, again, a phone call will have to suffice on this special day. I wish that wasn’t the case.

On the bright side, we’re planning a family trip home for the long weekend and that’s when we’ll cram in all of the relevant celebrations.

My mom has never been one to enjoy the spotlight – instead she’s happier without having attention drawn to her.

I hope she won’t me mind sharing how special she is.

Her name is Heather. She was a young bride, a young mom and a young grandmother who has quietly excelled in all her life roles.

Our family has some strong personalities, and we’ve all had our share of misadventures along with our adventures.

Mom is soft-spoken and never criticizes or raises her voice, even at times when maybe she should.

She doesn’t complain or gossip, and I wish more people were like her.

I wish I was more like her.

She puts up with our antics and is the glue holding our family together. Each strand of gray hair has been well earned.

Of course, she also makes the best turkey dinners! My daughter, my brother and I got on that topic last night and found ourselves drooling and wishing Christmas dinner was closer than half a year away.

I love that my teenage daughter picks up the phone regularly, of her own accord, to call Grandma. Their bond is something very special.

I also realized, when I last phoned home, that I’ve fallen offside in my regular calls and need to shape up. I could tell how excited Mom was to hear from me and felt bad for letting too much time accrue between calls.

I have a little note by my computer that she wrote last fall when we were starting the paper, and I hope I’ve made her proud.

I can’t wait to greet her with a hug next week. Have a wonderful Sunday, Mom!

STB Mailbox An Evening with Wilderness Ranch This Friday, Trinity Lutheran Church in Pincher Creek is hosting an evening with Wilderness Ranch, a Bible camp that takes young people on wilderness horseback trips.

The evening kicks off at 5:30 with a potluck supper in the church basement, followed by pony rides for the children in the church parking lot.

At 7:00 there will be a program in the church, with music by myself and the camp staff, singalongs and an entertaining and informative video about the camp. Everyone is welcome!

Afternoon tea – in honour of the Queen Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village in Pincher Creek will host Tea, Trees and a Tiara on May 21 – a celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. “Queen Elizabeth has held the throne of England for 60 years. In that time, Canada has had 12 prime ministers,” notes Toni Lucas, event co-ordinator at the pioneer village.

“We have these gorgeous grounds, and we would like to have a tea out where you can see the gardens.”

Awards, tree planting and dedication, guest speakers and music will be highlights of the event.

“We are excited to be able to present Project Muse,” Toni says.

The only cover he included was “Wagon Wheel,” a song credited to Bob Dylan for the chorus, although the lyrics were written by Jay Secour in 2001. “ ‘Wagon Wheel’ is my signature song,” he says. “I play it every time, everywhere I perform, my own version of it, and that’s why I included it on the album.”

Grant respects and admires many in the music industry, but a few artists who especially inspire him are Duane Steele (a fellow Peace country native), the legendary Bob Dylan and Chris Ledoux, as well as Claresholm’s Shane Chisholm, who plays bass on Grant’s album.

Now a resident of Nanton, Grant has played his share of bars, pubs and honkytonks, but lately has been spending more time in private venues and house concerts.

He says he doesn’t prefer one over the other, as each crowd brings something different to the performance. Although he does sing solo, Grant prefers having the live band behind him and, after playing live for five years, he knows the stage is where he wants to be.

When complimented on his strong vocal, writing and playing skills, Grant is modest. “I couldn’t have done any of this

toward a love of classical music, through teaching programs and music demonstrations. The group is based out of the Empress Theatre of Fort Macleod. Current members of Project Muse, which has gone through several incarnations, are Erin Fung of Calgary on clarinet; Sarah Gieck, who teaches at University of Lethbridge, on flute; Olivia Ritchey of Canmore on harp; and Brooke Day, currently of England, on viola.

To help celebrate the special day, local musician Phil Lethbridge and guests will also perform.

“Jane Rutledge will be celebrating her 100th birthday with us on that day,” Toni says. “We may even have another lady who is having her 100th birthday

celebration as well. It is turning out to be a very exciting day.”

Citizens marking their 100th birthday or higher can apply to get a special message from Queen Elizabeth.

The event will be held outside, but under cover.

“This is going to be a wonderful day, and would not have been possible without funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage,” says Toni. Thanks to that funding, tickets are free, but must be reserved by May 16 at 4 p.m.

without the support of my family, friends and my partner who helped organize this whole event.”

Grant, who has been with Beth Broomfield for over a year, has developed a strong following through social media sites such as Facebook, which he and Beth used to spread the word effectively and quickly about his concert and new CD. Although Grant has written many songs, the cost of producing an independent album limited him to his top six choices. But, as he proudly points out, he covered the fees himself and made the album with producer Josh Rob Gwilliam, an admirable feat for a young artist. This enabled him to have complete control of the sound and design. From back to front, this album is his own, including the cover picture of a couple kissing under the marquee lights, and a shot on the back of his own worn-out boots.

“From the glitter of fame in the lights, to the roots of my start in the music industry, and everything in between, that’s what those pictures show and that’s the feel of the album,” says Grant.

As most musicians will tell you, expressing feelings through a song is easier than through spoken words, which inspired the second song on Grant’s album, “Write a Song.” It depicts a love

story between two songwriters. The singer asks for proof of love and devotion but that the words be sung rather than spoken.

In a typical country music shift, the tune changes in Grant’s third song, “Don’t Need You No More,” which is loosely based on personal experiences. The tale of a broken heart is not new, but Grant puts his own spin on it when he sings of how she has come back to him but he has already moved on. The track has a “western, swing feel – it’s a happy break-up song,” Grant says with a laugh.

Closing the album with “My Guitar,” Grant leaves the listener with the impression that what is important to him is the music, the experiences and having fun.

With a slightly more edgy, almost rock feel to it, it emphasizes that becoming famous is not the goal.

Whether it is his goal or not, Grant may be facing larger crowds and fame sooner than he thinks. Stavely gave a very warm reception to both his first album and the singer himself.

Grant’s album, Marquee Lights, can be found in High River at Mel’s Music, and in Nanton at Tumbleweed Coffee House.

Next, James Skierka performed solo, using a beautiful grand piano. He performed all four movements of “Excursions, Op. 20” by Samuel Barber, a difficult piece that touches on North America’s musical history and roots, hearkening back to a variety of styles from boogie-woogie to folk. James played with energy and style. He embraced the joy of this homage to music of the past, and it reached out and spoke to an audience that seemed quite mesmerized by his rendition.

Crowsnest Pass Symphony Orchestra began with “Andalucia Suite” by Ernesto Lecuona, as arranged by Gordon Jenkins. Anyone familiar with this piece can attest to the many moods it runs the listener through. Conductor Jerry Lonsbury has conducted the orchestra the last 17 years, and has developed a strong relationship with the musicians.

This poetry of unison was aided by the work of concert mistress Shelly Groves.

The orchestra took us on a journey through “Prairie Sketches” by Canadian composer Robert McMullin, “Variations on a Shaker Melody” by Aaron Copeland and “A Salute to the Big Bands,” arranged by Calvin Custer.

After it was done, Jerry admitted the orchestra had completed “Variations” only once before without having to stop for corrections – at their practice just two days earlier. The musicians definitely rose to the challenge.

Jerry was appreciative of both Marie Olson and Maria Rosvick, from Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra, who filled out the French horn section with their talents. Mary Cote was also recognized for her 38 years of dedication performing for Crowsnest Pass Symphony Orchestra.

With this performance, the orchestra’s season concluded on a beautiful note.

Passquatch played hard to get, but was found by the Jorgenson family at Flummerfelt Park in Coleman, April 30.

Carloads of people who had been following the clues scoured the park for signs of the Passquatch.

As the Jorgenson family were searching, Jody discovered a tick on young Ryder’s head. After a trip to the hospital, they continued their search and found the replica hidden in a coffee cup.

“I loved it that they were the ones who ended up winning,” says Loreena Russomanno who dreamed up the furry beast and the scavenger hunt.

The site had thousands of hits during the contest as people logged their sightings and guessed where Passquatch would be seen next.

The grand prize has been claimed, but there are still gift certificates worth $400 to be awarded on Mother’s Day and better yet, there’s still time to join the fun.

Grief support available Canadian Mental Health and FCSS are sponsoring eight-week grief support programs to be held in Fort Macleod and Pincher Creek.

The groups will start the last week of May, and will be facilitated by Jeff Nemeth of Windblown Counselling.

“Many people find it difficult to deal with the loss or the death of someone they loved. ‘Who can I talk to who will

understand what I’m going through?’ is a frequently-asked question,” Jeff says.

The group is open to all and there is no cost to attend.

The Fort Macleod group will meet Monday evenings, and the Pincher Creek group will meet Thursday evenings.

Springtime at last! Once again, in our part of the world, the earth comes to life with new growth. The days are growing longer, grass is finally green, trees are shooting forth new leaves, and flowers are starting to show their lovely colours.

Spring has become my favourite season, with the added pleasure of being neither too hot nor cold. I have come to appreciate this time each year, after the long winter and dull browns. Yes, appreciation is what I feel for the beauty and promise of the season, and not having to do the work that goes along with it – appreciation that might be no more than a sign of age!

Of course there is the added work of mowing, weeding and planting (which I am no longer required to do). I hope that when you are out in the sun doing these chores, and perhaps begrudging the heat, you consider how much it beats shovelling snow in winter.

A variety of flowers has started to grow, containing a rainbow of colours.

Over all the others, I eagerly wait for the lilies outside my bedroom window to mature and shoot forth their lovely flowers of white and dark lavender.

They were so exquisite last year, I was inspired to paint them. I had never tried watercolours before, so I read pages and pages about watercolour painting, bought supplies and practised different techniques. I ended up becoming frustrated after finally acknowledging I could not do them justice.Trying to improve upon or duplicate nature proved far beyond my talents.

Still, I cannot wait to see them again this year, and maybe I can capture their magnificence in a painting. Who knows?

Picking up some Mother’s Day flowers through the Skye-Anna School of Highland dance will help the young dancers with their fundraising efforts.

The girls have been busy taking orders for 480 plants as part of their potted-flower fundraiser.

The plants are available as hanging baskets, mixed pots or pansy bowls, and range in price from $18 to $30.

Instructor Louanna Jones says they’ve sold almost two-thirds of the plants so far.

Dancers have been busy with all sorts of community activities and fundraising over the past few months.

Whether it’s washing dishes or dancing for donations, they are noticeable in Stavely and surrounding communities.

A Robbie Burns celebration in

January gave dancers the opportunity to learn more about Scottish heritage while sharing their dancing prowess, and drew a huge crowd.

Louanna shares her passion for dance with students from Claresholm, Stavely and Nanton and is keen to take things beyond the dance floor of the Stavely studio.

With the help of the Skye-Anna Dance Society, Louanna is on a mission to take her dancers on a trip to Scotland next summer.

The experience will include touring, exlporing the culture and performing.

The goal is to raise enough money through various fundraising efforts in the community to pay the way for the dancers.

Livingstone School Class of 2012 Livingstone School students celebrated their graduation with a ceremony Friday at the Pincher Creek Community Hall.

Twenty-one graduates were decked out in their finest for the evening.

Shaylee Zeller was chosen as valedictorian of this year’s graduating class.

According to teacher-advisor Tracy Preston-Hucik, “The night turned out absolutely perfect. Shaylee’s speech was inspirational and everything went well.”

Coming home from Costa Rica This is the third letter from Linda Hammond of Pincher Creek, who travelled to Costa Rica with her sister, Diane Miller, to work for Habitat for Humanity.

The first story about Linda’s adventure was published Feb. 1, with letters also in the April 25 and May 2 editions. You can read them in the online archives of STB at www.shootinthebreeze.ca .

By Linda Hammond Our final build day was on Friday.

I think they felt sorry for us because, instead of digging more holes or moving dirt, we painted the interiors of a couple of houses.

By lunch we were finished, and our celebrations with the families began. We had a pinata for the kids and then we played soccer on the school soccer field.

Those Ticos (as the locals call themselves) love soccer and were very good players.

An hour and a half later we called the

game. I guess we acclimatized to the heat, because I wouldn’t have been able to run earlier in the week. Forty degrees is too hot.

We said goodbye to the families and made our way back to our hotel. I felt relieved to not have to dig any more holes, but a little sad that we couldn’t do more to further the building process. Another Habitat group will be there in a couple of weeks to continue with the build.

I would encourage anyone who has ever thought about doing something like this to take action and go for it.

There is nothing quite like the feeling of helping someone who needs it. Giving without getting anything in return – just because – is a great feeling. Where you go and who you help is up to you.

Habitat for Humanity is just one of many organizations.

I must admit, the first few days since returning home have been hard. We were told in our debriefing to be patient.

Coming back to a fast-paced (some would say selfish) culture would take some getting used to.

I found my kids to be very loud and unappreciative of each other and their belongings. “If you don’t look after your toys, I am going to give them to a family who appreciates them.” “Do you realize how lucky you are? Eat your supper, you could be eating iguana, or maybe a gopher!” “Man we have a lot of stuff in this house. Why? I am going to get rid of it all!”

Seriously. I can’t even get them in your drawer. Do you actually wear all of this?”

I want to thank my children and Jeff for their patience while I get used to being home and making sense of all that we have here in Alberta. I hope to teach my kids to appreciate all they have and not expect or demand it as they continue to grow. Thank you to all who supported me.

Making dollars out of cents The final Canadian penny has been pressed, but members of the Elks are turning the coin’s demise into a way help children with hearing and speech disorders.

Elks in Pincher Creek, and across the country, are “making dollars out of cents” by collecting pennies for their national charity, the Elks and Royal Purple Fund for Children. The fund provides personal assistance to children and youth up to age 19, and supports clinical programs dealing with communication orders.

Charlie Price of the Pincher Creek Elks says the lodge has received permission to place collection boxes in some local business places and other facilities. If you have pennies to donate, or would like a box on your

The penny drive is a 100th anniversary project for the Elks of Canada. Incorporated under a special Dominion of Canada charter in September 1912, the organization has grown from its first lodge, in Vancouver, to over 250 lodges nationwide.

Over 13,000 members of the Elks of Canada continue to help those in need and to serve their communities. It’s estimated the Elks contribute about $15 million in donations and volunteer service hours annually throughout the country.

Are you prepared?

Emergency Preparedness Week, May 6 to 12, will be marked Saturday in Pincher Creek with displays of emergency equipment, fun activities, and draws for 72-hour emergency kits. There will be displays both outside and inside by local emergency organizations.

Activities run from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ranchland Mall.

The Co-op has generously donated supplies for a concession, with proceeds going to the Canadian Red Cross.

Pincher Creek Search and Rescue will have their mobile command post at the mall. As a training exercise, they will do a mock notification of residents close to the mall. Search and Rescue members will be knocking on doors to deliver information on Emergency Preparedness Week, being prepared, and the new siren protocol.

At noon, Pincher Creek Emergency Services and the Cowley Fire Department

will sound emergency alert sirens at the Pincher Creek, Cowley and Lundbreck fire halls. This is a test only, but in the event of an actual disaster in the future, the sirens will be used to garner attention and volunteers.

The sirens have not been used for a number of years, but the Pincher Creek Community Emergency Management Agency believes they could be an effective tool for alerting communities to an emergency, and is implementing a protocol for their use.

If requested, the sirens will be used to put out a single, continuous tone for one minute. If more than one tone is requested, the next will be five minutes later, again for one minute.

The sirens may be sounded for a number of reasons, such as: * help is required to fill sandbags; * an evacuation is occurring;

* a major fire requiring evacuation is occurring; * other volunteer help is needed.

When you hear the siren, there is an ongoing emergency, and you should obtain details on what to do: * Check Alberta Emergency Alert’s website at emergencyalert.alberta.ca . * A dedicated phone line has been set up to release information to the public during emergency events at 1-855-627-5365. * Tune to local radio stations for news updates.

Emergency Preparedness Week encourages Canadians to be prepared to cope on their own for at least the first 72 hours of an emergency, while rescue workers help those in urgent need.

Almost halfway for the Empress

By Mary Oordt With quiet determination, the Empress Theatre Society’s centennial fund development group has raised over $220,000 of its $500,000 goal.

The stately Empress on Main Street in Fort Macleod needs restoration as she enters her second century. While architecturally sound, her roof needs to be updated as do the heating and air conditioning systems.

Modern technology requires new digital equipment for movie projection, as well as an enhanced sound system for the ever-popular live music performances. The entire theatre

must meet current building codes.

Thanks to the federal, provincial and municipal governments for providing the initial leadership to keep the Empress upto-date for another century. A further thank you to area businesses and individuals who see the value of restoring southern Alberta’s oldest arts facility.

Able to seat 327 patrons, the plush ruby red seats need to be reupholstered and configured to current safety standards. Seats can be adopted for $500 each, to be named for the donor for the next 10 years. A half dozen other theatre naming opportunities will complete the balance of the goal.

And that’s just the beginning! The yearlong birthday party begins June 29 – exactly 100 years to the day from the opening of the Empress Theatre. Celebrations, including the launch of a history book, Reign of the Empress, 1912 - 2012, and the opening of a commissioned play, The Stage That Made Us, will be held for the entire Canada Day weekend and beyond.

The Empress Theatre Society and its many volunteers are excited to honour this 100-year legacy – the lovely Empress on Main Street. She is a treasure from the past that lifts our spirits today and will bring hope far into the future.

As a member of Friends in Sync, I know how hard the group worked on the music they presented. I also know how much I suffered jitters, butterflies and nerves before the performance – a condition not universally shared by the rest of the group.

What I can say for that portion of the evening is that the audience was appreciative and responsive to our performance, the group worked beautifully together, the sound in the hall was grand, and the group’s two accompanists, Brenda Squair on piano and Penny Nickol on drums, were applauded by the audience after they performed a musical interlude during the “Boggie-Woogie Bugle Boy.” Most left the gym smiling, humming and chatting about the evening, giving every indication they truly enjoyed the evening’s entertainment.

Please do your part! Experience has shown that individual preparedness goes a long way to help people cope better, both during and after a major disaster.

Get an emergency kit now – it can make a world of difference.

All families should have two emergency kits: a ready-to-stay kit and a ready-to-go kit. These kits will help you survive 72 hours, whether you stay in

your home or need to evacuate. Replace food and water annually.

The ready-to-stay kit should include: two litres of drinking water per person per day, food that won’t spoil (canned, dried, energy bars), manual can opener, flashlight and batteries, first-aid kit (and prescription medication, infant supplies), extra keys to your house and car, cash in smaller bills, copy of emergency plan and contact information, pet supplies, candles and matches, change of clothing and footwear, garbage bags, toilet paper, toiletries, blankets and basic tools.

The ready-to-go kit should include: one gallon of water per person, nonperishable food, manual can opener,

disposable dishes and utensils, flashlight and batteries, radio and batteries, change of clothes and footwear, infant supplies, personal identification cards, emergency contact information and phone number of someone who lives outside your area, pet supplies, first-aid kit, toiletries.

Store items in a duffle bag near an exit. Store regularly-used medications near your kit.

Kick off summer safely this May long weekend Plan ahead, be prepared and minimize your impact Edmonton... Thousands of Albertans will visit Alberta’s beautiful outdoors this May long weekend. By planning ahead, thinking about safety and taking simple steps to protect the environment, Albertans can help make the traditional kick-off to summer enjoyable for all.

Public information and enforcement activities will be stepped up to encourage responsible use of roads, public lands and parks. Together with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, officers from the Government of Alberta will conduct check stops and off-highway vehicle compliance checks and inform the public about safe recreation practices, laws and regulations.

Albertans who are planning to

spend the weekend camping at one of the province’s provincial parks are encouraged to reserve a campsite in advance at www.Reserve.AlbertaParks. ca. While many campsites are available on a first-come-first-served basis, spots do fill up quickly. Campers can also check which parks have liquor or fire bans in place by visiting www. albertaparks.ca.

Whether they plan to visit a provincial park or explore the backcountry, Albertans should take precautions to avoid wildfires. Typically, about 60 per cent of wildfires are caused by people.

Before heading out this long weekend, check for fire bans at www.albertafirebans.ca.

The risk of wildfires increases with dry conditions. Always check to make sure your campfire is completely extinguished. Soak it, stir the ashes, and

soak it again.

Off-highway vehicle users can reduce the risk of wildfires by removing burnable debris from hot spots on their machines. All off-highway vehicles in Alberta are required to have a functional muffler and spark arresters.

Wet weather, either rain or snow, can also contribute to problems on the landscape. Off-highway vehicle users should avoid wet areas completely.

These vehicles can cause damage to the land and fisheries and also impact water quality.

May focuses on young drivers The Alberta Traffic Safety Plan focuses on Young Drivers for the month of May. During this time Wood Buffalo RCMP are looking to provide information and education to young, and/or new, drivers regarding safe driving habits and behaviours.

The Government announced its support for Member of Parliament Parm Gill’s Private Member’s Bill the Criminal Organization Recruitment Act which will make the act of criminal organization recruitment an offence under the Criminal Code.

Fans of Jenny Lawson’s online alter-ego The Bloggess are already familiar with her unconventional sense of humor, and in this lively new memoir, she tries to explain how she got that way. Raised in a “violently rural” Texas town, many of the most unforgettable moments of Lawson’s early life are furnished by her unpredictable dad, a taxidermist, animal rescuer and armadillo-racing champion.

In a series of cringingly hilarious vignettes, Lawson lets us in on what it’s like inside a deer, the challenges of being the only Goth girl in a high-school full of 4-Hers, and exactly how traumatic it is to get your arm stuck in the ladyparts of a cow. by West, who laid a clever trap for declarer and then had the satisfaction of watching him fall right into it.

After bidding all four suits at the one-level, North-South arrived at three notrump. West decided that the best hope to defeat the contract was to find his partner with strength behind dummy’s spades. So he led the spade ten, which declarer ducked to East’s queen. East then shifted to a low club, taken by dummy’s queen.

South had eight tricks -- a spade, four diamonds and three clubs -- and concluded that the best chance for a ninth lay in developing a heart trick.

So at trick three, he led the ten of hearts from dummy, on which East played the three and South the five.

But instead of taking the trick with

the jack, West followed smoothly with the deuce!

This apparent stroke of good fortune had the desired effect on South. Convinced that East must have the jack of hearts, declarer led another heart toward his Q-9-8 in an attempt to score an overtrick.

The second heart lead met with a cordial reception from West, who proceeded to cash four heart tricks for down one. His brilliant duck of the first heart trick had lured a greedy South down the road to disaster.

Of course, declarer could have romped home with nine tricks after the ten of hearts held. But how many players would be able to resist the temptation to try for an extra trick once the heart jack was “proven” to be with East?

Q: I have a “tire” ashtray that I think is probably from the 1930s. Are these collectible? -- Carl, Dayton, Ohio A: Most of the “tire” ashtrays that I’ve seen being offered for sale were originally given away as premiums by service stations, tire manufacturers and garages. The earliest styles were crafted of glass circled by a miniature rubber tire. On the tire is embossed the name of the company. Ashtrays of this type produced before about 1950 are especially collectible. Typical prices are Goodrich Double Eagle, $125; Firestone Deluxe Champion, $45; Zenith, $40; and Jetzon, $20. As with most collectibles, condition is extremely important. For non-smokers, some of the ashtrays were issued

that featured a pin tray. *** Q: My mom collected Avon bottles, and I have inherited them. I know nothing about Avon and current values. Can you help me? -- Susan, Stigler, Okla.

A: The California Perfume Company was founded in 1886 and the Avon line was not introduced until about 40 years later. Collecting the earlier items is still competitive, but ones issued after about 1960 have little or no value to serious enthusiasts. After monitoring eBay for several days, I still believe that the Avon market has softened. There are several guidebooks available at amazon.com, but you should take the prices listed in them with some caution. For example, one guide lists a Nile Blue Bath Urn for $15, but it actually sells for about $5. *** Q: I have a reverse painting on glass identified as “Scene in Scotland.” Any information you can give me would be appreciated. -- Barbara, Sun City, Ariz.

A: Such paintings were especially

popular during the early 20th century. They were painted by a variety of artists; some signed their work, and others did not. Paintings on glass of this type generally sell in the $50 to $100 range depending on subject matter, condition and desirability. *** Q: I have a sheet of 29-cent stamps honoring Elvis Presley. Are they valuable or should I use them? -- Theresa, Nashua, N.H. A: I spoke to several stamp collectors, who seem to agree that they are only worth face value. My advice would be to use them.

Evenly spoon batter into prepared muffin wells.

3. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Place muffin pan on a wire rack and let set for 5 minutes. Remove muffins and continue cooling on wire rack. Serves 8.

Craft Sheer Hosiery Into Flower Bouquet “She loves me, she loves me not,” the kids chant in a chorus around a little patch of daisies blooming on our boulevard. Tugging flower petals one by one, their smiling young faces announce in a most traditional way that spring has sprung.

Join your kids during this beautiful season and take a closer look at the flowers in your yard, neighborhood park or in the vase on your kitchen table. Discover the interesting shapes of the petals that one by one compose a unique bloom. Then let your observations inspire you to make a bouquet of everlasting flowers from the most unusual of materials: wire and inexpensive, colorful knee-high stockings!

Here are the materials for a flower with four or five petals: 2 sheer knee-high stockings in white or pastel colors A roll of 16- or 18-gauge wire Scissors Floral tape or green electrical tape Vase or flowerpot with florist foam inside Floral moss (optional)

Here’s the fun: 1. Shape and twist the wire in a loop to form an outline of a petal that is about 1 inch in diameter. Think of it as the “frame” of the petal. Do not cut the wire at the base of the loop, but rather twist and turn the wire to form another similar-size petal next to the first until you have four or five petals. Do not cut off the wire.

2. Cut off the toe and the elastic end of a pair of sheer knee-highs. Stretch the stocking over a wire petal, then twist it in place at the base, stretch it a bit more, and then twist again. Wrap the wire around the base to fasten the stocking in place. Cut off excess stocking below the petal. Continue with each petal. This can be a two-person project. Your child can stretch the stocking over the petal while you do the twisting.

3. Cut the wire, allowing for a stem.

Give the stem a nice finished look with floral or green electrical tape. Arrange

in a flowerpot with floral moss or in a vase.

Alzheimer’s Is Common Type of Dementia DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What is the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s disease? Are they the same?

-- M.J. ANSWER: “Dementia” is an encompassing word that includes many different conditions. Those conditions have some similar features that indicate an impairment or loss of important mental functions. The inability to retain new information, getting lost in familiar surroundings, difficulty choosing the proper words to express oneself, trouble doing simple arithmetic like adding and subtracting, the failure to recognize close relatives and friends, and showing poor judgment like dressing for winter in the middle of summer are signs of dementia.

Alzheimer’s disease, Pick’s disease, vascular dementia (dementia due to many small strokes), dementia with Lewy bodies and frontotemporal dementia are but a few of the dementia illnesses. Each of these illnesses has

Has the operation gone out of fashion? Or is there some other way to deal with it? -- R.P. ANSWER: The appendix is still where it always has been, dangling down from the first part of the colon on the lower right side. Long thought not to have any purpose, it does appear to add to immune defenses and seems to produce products useful for the development of the fetus. We do well without it, though.

Appendicitis has not gone out of fashion. It happens with the same regularity it always has. The age group most likely to suffer from it is the group between 10 and 19.

Around 250,000 appendectomies are done yearly in the United States.

Newer developments in the diagnosis of appendicitis include CT scans and ultrasound. Many surgeons now use a laparoscope to remove it. It’s a viewing instrument passed into the abdomen through a small incision. Instruments also are inserted through similar small incisions. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I don’t think my problem will impress you, but here I go.

I refuse to wear a bathing suit in the summer because of all the spider veins on my legs, especially in the area of the ankles. How are they gotten rid of? I heard that tea bags work.

Do they? -- E.L. ANSWER: I’m not familiar with tea bags for spider veins.

Other treatments do work well.

Lasers can obliterate them. So can sclerotherapy. A doctor injects these tiny veins with a solution that causes them to wither and dry up.

I’m sure you won’t have trouble finding a doctor who does these procedures. If you do have trouble, ask your family doctor for a referral.

Green Beans With Mixed Mushrooms This simple side borrows the casserole’s basic flavors, but gives them grabbed-from-the-garden goodness with field-picked beans, thinsliced onions and earthy criminis and shiitakes.

2 tablespoons olive oil 4 sprigs fresh thyme 2 large (10 to 12 ounces each) onions, thinly sliced 1 clove garlic, crushed with press 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, thinly sliced 4 ounces shiitake mushrooms, stems discarded, thinly sliced Salt Pepper 3 pounds green beans, trimmed 1. Heat covered 7- to 8-quart saucepot of water to boiling on high.

2. Meanwhile, in 12-inch skillet, heat oil on medium-high. Add thyme and onions; cook 10 to 12 minutes or until browned and very tender, stirring occasionally. Stir in garlic and cook 1 minute. Add mushrooms and cook 5 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally.

Stir in 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper.

Remove and discard thyme.

3. Add green beans and 2 teaspoons salt to boiling water. Cook, uncovered, 8 to 9 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally. Drain and rinse with cold water.

4. When ready to serve, return green beans to saucepot and add mushroom mixture, stirring to combine. Cook on medium until beans are heated through, stirring occasionally. Serves 12.

While Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” won five Oscars, it only took in $182 million at the box office. That sounds like a lot, until you consider that it cost $180 million to produce and market the film.

This has put a great strain on his producing partnership with Graham King, whose production company -- now facing financial problems -produced many of Scorsese’s films.

They’ve tabled their next production together, and Scorsese instead will team with Leonardo DiCaprio for the fifth time (as he did with “Gangs of New York,” “The Aviator,” “The Departed” and “Shutter Island”) on “The Wolf of Wall Street.” It’s based on the book by Jordan Belfort, who was banned from the securities business for life and went to jail for fraud and money-laundering. It starts shooting in August.

As for Scorsese’s planned Frank Sinatra bio picture, he admits, “Leo (DiCaprio) always talked about doing it, but what if the story takes us a different way? We could go with an unknown.” The “different way” could 8506 - 19th Avenue

Ross felt it wasn’t enough time to do justice to the original, which already has grossed three-quarters of a billion dollars. *** In other news, “The Amazing SpiderMan” won’t be in theaters until July 3, but the sequel already is on its way.

“Star Trek” writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are creating the sequel, which will go into production early in 2013 and hit theaters May 2, 2014, with Andrew Garfield returning as Spider-Man. And Disney is planning a “Making

of ” type film of the Julie Andrews’ Oscar-winning vehicle “Mary Poppins.” “Saving Mr. Banks” will star Tom Hanks as Walt Disney, with possibly Emma Thompson as P.L. Travers, who wrote the book. Don’t worry, if it doesn’t turn out to be as much fun as the original, “Just a Spoonful of Sugar” helps the mediocre go down!

How can I make sure I get what I pay for? -- Clarence T., Philadelphia A: There are several things you can do to make sure a contractor is legitimate, that the work will be done on time and to your satisfaction, and that unpleasant surprises won’t crop up later. Here are a few tips to keep in mind: --Take your time deciding: Unless the repair is an emergency, you have the luxury of getting more than one estimate from more than one contractor. Get at least three quotes before deciding.

--Check with the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints were lodged

--Ask for the contractor’s license, as well as proof of workers compensation insurance.

--Get everything in writing: A statement of when the work will begin and end, how much materials will cost and what materials will be used, how much labor is involved and what that will cost, whether permits will be required, and whether the work must meet building codes.

--Do not allow work to begin until you have signed a contract you both agree on.

--Never pay in advance, and do not pay in cash: write a check or use a credit card instead.

--Insist on inspecting all work yourself (or have a representative inspect it for you) before providing the final payment.

If a problem crops up during or after the repair job, try to resolve the issue with the contractor first. Reputable contractors will try to make it right. If you can’t resolve the problem or can’t find the contractor, you can lodge a complaint with the BBB or contact your state or city’s consumer protection department.

HOME TIP: Word of mouth is still the best way to find a good contractor. Ask

neighbors, family and friends if there’s a contractor they can recommend.

You can purchase a wok (or large, heavy-bottomed skillet) and use it as a gift container. Fill it with a beautiful pair of chopsticks, curry and fivespice mixes, packaged udon noodles, rice vinegar, coconut milk, fish sauce, roasted red chili paste, sesame oil and wooden stir-fry utensils. Thread a ribbon through the handles of the wok or around the skillet handle, tie it in a bow and your present will contain the basic ingredients needed to prepare the perfect stir-fry!

You can enclose my recipe for WokFried Salmon and Vegetables on a pretty card, and use it to make a quick, easy and delicious meal for yourself!

Stir-Frying Tips: --Prep all the veggies in advance in similar-sized pieces for even cooking; --Vegetables should be rinsed and drained ahead of time; --If using a non-stick wok, pre-heat on medium-high to high heat for at least a minute before adding oil; --Drizzle the oil down the sides of the wok so that it coats both the sides and the bottom of the wok. The oil heats faster this way; --When adding sauce to vegetables and/or meat, form a “well” in the middle by pushing the ingredients up the sides of the wok. Add the sauce in the middle and stir to thicken before

combining with the other ingredients.

WOK-FRIED SALMON AND VEGETABLES For the Sauce: 2 tablespoons organic rice vinegar 1 tablespoon sugar, honey or stevia 1 tablespoon grated ginger root 1 tablespoon cornstarch 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce 1/2 teaspoon fish sauce 1 to 2 teaspoons roasted red chili paste, to taste For the Stir-Fry: 2 tablespoons peanut or canola oil 1 medium yellow onion, peeled and chopped 2 cups purple or green broccoli florets 2 medium carrots, sliced in ribbons 3 bunches baby bok choy, rinsed and sliced in quarters 6 green onions, cut in half, roots removed and discarded 2 cups chopped purple cabbage 1/4 pound salmon fillet 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil 1. In small bowl, combine rice vinegar, sugar, ginger root, cornstarch, hoisin and fish sauce, and red chili paste. Mix well and set aside to allow flavors to combine.

2. In large wok (or skillet), heat oil over high heat. Add in onion, broccoli and

carrots. Stir-fry, stirring constantly, for 3–4 minutes or until vegetables begin to soften. Add bok choy, green onions and the cabbage, stirring constantly.

Immediately place salmon fillet on top of vegetables. Reduce heat to medium, cover wok or skillet and cook for 4–5 minutes or until salmon flakes when tested with fork. Flake salmon and stir into vegetables.

3. Make a well in the center of the wok or skillet. Stir the vinegar mixture and add it into the wok or skillet. Turn heat to medium-high and stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until the sauce bubbles and thickens. Drizzle with the sesame oil.

Serve immediately over hot, cooked udon noodles or rice. Serves 4.

Bobcat Fever Is Cat Killer DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently began hearing reports about something called “bobcat fever,” which affects cats. What is it, and how can I keep my cat safe? -- Darlene G., Kansas City, Mo. DEAR DARLENE: Bobcat fever, scientifically known as “cytauxzoonosis,” is a serious illness that has spread across the United States in recent years. It affects cats -- not

only domesticated cats, but wildcats and even tigers -- and has a high mortality rate. It does not affect dogs.

Bobcat fever is spread through bites from infected ticks: A tick first bites and sucks blood from an alreadyinfected cat, drops off then bites and infects another cat.

Leah Cohn, a University of Missouri veterinarian, said healthy outdoor cats are most at risk. “The disease acts very quickly and can kill a cat less than a week after it begins to show signs of being sick, so it is important to get treatment from a veterinarian as soon as the cat appears ill.”

How can you keep your cat safe?

Keep it indoors. If your cat must be outdoors, make sure it is treated regularly for fleas and ticks or wears a flea/tick collar. If your cat shows signs of illness -- sluggishness and/ or refusal to eat -- or if you discover a tick on its fur or skin, contact

your veterinarian immediately.

Cohn recently developed a more effective treatment for bobcat fever, which increased the survival rate for cats affected by this illness from less than 25 percent to nearly 60 percent. She also is doing research toward a vaccine for bobcat fever.

In the meantime, prevention is the best medicine for this disease.

Here’s a great way to remember when to pay a bill so that it always gets there on time: I used to write the due dates of my bills on my calendar. Now I write the pay-by date for each bill instead. • On May 10, 1869, the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads meet up in Promontory, Utah, making transcontinental railroad travel possible for the first time in U.S. history. Journeys that had taken months by wagon train or weeks by boat now took only days.

• On May 7, 1915, the British ocean liner Lusitania is torpedoed without warning by a German submarine off the coast of Ireland, with 1,198 people drowned. It was later revealed that the Lusitania was carrying about 173 tons of war munitions for Britain, which the Germans cited as justification for the attack.

• On May 12, 1925, a Philadelphia radio station broadcasts the first all-star radio program featuring film actors and actresses. Sound films had not yet debuted, and the broadcast marked the first time

that most listeners had heard the voices of film stars like Lillian Gish and Marion Davies.

• On May 8, 1933, the first police radio system, connecting headquarters to patrol cars and patrol cars to one another, is installed in Eastchester Township, N.Y.
