My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin I hope all of our readers who are also moms enjoyed a wonderful Sunday in celebration of Mother’s Day. My morning got off to a shaky start when I awoke to a heaving sound. I rolled over just in time to watch our little dog to throw up right beside my pillow. How’s that for some puppy love?

With the exception of that little incident, I had a fabulous day. Things kept getting better, right up until it was time to crawl back into bed again.

My daughter Jaiden took me to the Pincher Creek Legion for breakfast. It was a treat, with volunteers Dave Millar, Jim Cisar and Judy Tillack dishing out and serving more than we could hope to eat. Thanks to the cooks who fed about 200 people.

A full room of moms were treated to free breakfast, a glass of champagne, poured by well-dressed gentleman Bill Skelly, and a plant to take home.

Afterward, Jaiden and I walked around the pond at Bobby Burns Park and watched the fish jump. On such a beautiful afternoon, I was surprised that we were there alone.

Next we gathered up my husband, my brother and our little dog, and took off on a road trip. Our greenhouse touring took us to Perfect Posies in Pincher Creek, SpringBreak Garden Centre in Hillcrest and Grumpy’s Greenhouses in Beaver Mines.

Along the way we watched a couple canoeing down the Crowsnest River, relaxed at Castle Falls and enjoyed some very yummy homemade pie at the Beaver Mines General Store.

I took many, many pictures and everyone was patient with my demands to stop here, and turn around to stop there, while I tried to capture the essence of the beautiful spring day.

There were many marvellous sights and views, with my favourite being the osprey taking flight with its headless catch of the day.

We followed the Gladstone Valley Road and finally arrived in Waterton for a late dinner. Brian served us an excellent meal at the Bayshore Inn – our compliments to the chef!

Twelve hours after Jaiden and I had set out in the morning, we were back at home.

A day off spent with those I love meant more than any material gift – thank you to my family for the special day.

There’s another big weekend coming up, and I hope everyone has something fun planned for the May long weekend.

The Victoria Day weekend is the traditional kickoff to summer, and many will be hauling campers and pitching tents.

Last week while driving on Stoney Trail in Calgary, we came upon a fifth-wheel tipped forward on its front end in the centre lane . The truck it had been attached to was on the shoulder of the road at the end of a trail of blackies.

Things like this don’t just happen in the movies. Take time to secure your loads, obey the distracted-driving laws and the speed limits, and keep your family, your most precious cargo, safe on the highways this weekend.

Frances Mary Woolf WOOLF: Ms. Frances Mary Woolf of Blairmore, Alberta, and formerly of Coleman, passed away on May 5, 2012 at the Crowsnest Pass Continuing Care Centre, at the age of 90 years.

Frances was born on June 27, 1921, in Pincher Creek, Alberta, to Louis and Lottie Taylor and grew up with brother Louie (Jr.) and sister Eileen. She was blessed with a family and delighted in her three boys, Garth, Ron and Russell. With her good sense of humour and her own hairdressing business in Coleman in the 1960s and `70s, she was well known and admired. She lived in Tecumseh Manor from 1991 to 2008, before moving into the Continuing Care Centre where the family is very grateful for the kindness and compassion shown to Frances during her stay.

Frances loved to travel; opportunities opened up for her to visit Britain, Portugal and the Caribbean, but the Crowsnest Pass still had a special place in her heart. She loved being by water, swimming, canoeing and camping. Artistic by nature, she derived great pleasure from collecting wild flowers from the bush, pressing them and then using them in the greeting cards which she sold locally. Gardening and visiting outdoors with her neighbors gave her great pleasure. Quite the seamstress, she was much in demand for making dresses and alterations in our community. Frances was always a community-minded person and enjoyed volunteering for various events and gatherings and was a proud member of the Eastern Star and Royal Canadian Legion in Blairmore.

Frances is survived by her sons: Garth (Velda) Woolf, Ron Woolf and Russell James (Eileen) Woolf; her grand-children: Kurt (Leanne) Woolf, Mark (Paula) Woolf, Katie (Jade) Bainbridge, Pam Dreeshen, Annette (Mike) Reilly, Vicki Woolf, Alicia (Brad) Large, Natasha (Mike) Lichtenberger, Cody (Alicia) Woolf; her great- grand-children: Carter, Ivy, Brycen, Kameron, Luke, Gwen, Taryen, Tianna, Raegan, Rylee, Reese; her niece Joan MacKay; and her extended family and long-time friends, Betty and Brian Illingsworth.

She was predeceased by her parents, Louis and Lottie Taylor; her brother, Louie Taylor (Jr.); and her sister, Eileen MacKay. With respect for the family’s wishes, a private gathering in honour of the late Frances Woolf will occur later this summer.

Sweeping the speeches

First place in any event is pretty impressive, but to be named a champion three times can only be described as absolutely incredible.

Megan McGlynn and Taylor Wells, both 14, and Martyna Lively, 10, have the distinction of being exceptional speakers and have been rewarded for it.

Megan and Taylor, who have both been in 4-H for five years, did a joint project, debating and demonstrating what they do best: jumping and reining.

After training and practising in both sports, the young ladies wrote speeches comparing the two and arguing which is superior. Megan was of the opinion that jumping is the superior sport while her partner Taylor maintained reining is where the real fun is.

They then treated the audience to a demonstration of each sitting in the saddle, but with a twist. Megan said, “I sat in her western saddle and she (Taylor) sat in my English saddle. Then we let the audience choose which they liked better.”

When asked why she preferred her own sport to jumping, Taylor said with a laugh, “I do reining because I like it and I don’t excel at jumping.”

The speech and presentation led the girls to the top of the Pincher Creek Silver Reins 4-H Light Horse Club, in February of this year. In March, they competed in

the district finals, which encompassed the Pincher Creek area, and took first in that as well. Later that month, the young ladies moved on to the regional finals, competing against all of southern Alberta. They were awarded first place again, with the additional bonus of $50 in prize money for each.

Joanne Wells, general leader of the club, said, “They ride every day, and as a club we do lessons, instructive rides or clinics on average twice a month, so they pretty much ride year round.”

Martyna Lively, a 4-H participant for three years, followed the same winning road, taking first place in club, district and regional finals, but followed a different path for her speech.

“I wrote about my trip with my family to Mexico,” Martyna said. “We went snorkelling and saw the Mayan ruins when we stayed in Cozumel. We snorkelled in one of the best places in the world.”

A large family trip it was – 15 members, to be exact. Parents, sister, aunts, uncles, cousins and grandparents all headed south for a nine-day adventure that left Martyna with many great stories for her speech.

“The Mayan ruins were really fun.

They told us about the ball courts there and it was a lot of walking,” she said. “I’d probably want to go visit Hawaii next.”

Music Unwrapped

Record concert attendance last year in Fort Macleod has prompted the return of Music Unwrapped – Chamber Music for Families.

Presented by the town’s historic Empress Theatre, June 2 at 1 p.m., Music Unwrapped is designed to introduce parents, children and others to the rich world and heritage of classical music.

The concert concludes two weeks of school performances by the highlytalented and experienced musicians of Project Muse. This year’s carefullyselected family musical program includes pieces by French composer Claude Debussy, German baroque composer Georg Philipp Telemann, American composer Randall Thompson, English composer Paul Reade and Canadian composer Milton Barnes.

Project Muse, a musical outreach program organized by the Empress Theatre, each year brings together four young, professional musicians to perform, share and interact with the school children and families of southwestern Alberta.

This year’s group includes popular and animated returnees Sarah Gieck (flute) and Brooke Day (viola), along with new artists Erin Fung (clarinet) and Olivia Ritchie (harp). All are talented Alberta musicians. Brooke, originally from Lethbridge, is pursuing a musical career in England.

The 2012 program includes visits to 14 schools, a record number for Project Muse, throughout southern Alberta. Schools in Pincher Creek, Stavely, Claresholm, Enchant, Lomond, Glenwood, Barnwell, Coaldale and Lethbridge are hosting this musical foursome.

She says her mother had a big influence on her “crafty” ways. “I’ve loved doing crafts all my life. My mother never sat with empty hands, and she taught me well.”

Linda still has the first crocheted doily she did as a young girl. Although “the tension on it is way too tight,” Linda says she was very proud of it.

From there, she says, “Mom and home economics taught me sewing, so I spent time sewing clothes for myself and daughter. Mom also taught me embroidery and to knit as a young girl.”

It wasn’t until she was in her early 20s that Linda knit her first sweater coat. Thirty years later, she still wears it, sharing, “Good wool and good care will allow for long wear.”

Even with her background, it’s in only the last three years that knitting has really taken over as her hobby pastime. “Not a day goes by that I don’t pick up the needles!” she says.

Linda is looking forward to the grand opening, this Wednesday to Saturday, and invites everyone to stop by and take a peek at what’s in-store. She wants everyone to know, “There’ll be coffee and muffins, and everything will be on sale – from 10 to 50 per cent off.”

A Nest of Needles is open Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. till 5 p.m., and Thursdays from noon till 8 p.m.

Opening A Nest of Needles

Although A Nest of Needles has been servicing Crowsnest Pass and area for quite a while now, you’ll be happy to know the store is actually preparing to welcome you to its grand opening celebration, beginning today!

You may recognize Linda Sigsworth as an employee of the popular knitting store in Coleman. She is now the proud new owner of A Nest of Needles.

Linda says that when she found out the previous owner, Sandra Mullen, was selling the store, “People suggested I buy it, since I was already working here.” But she resisted the idea, since she had never worked in retail and couldn’t fathom owning her own business.

It came to the point (pun intended) where A Nest of Needles would have to close. That’s when Linda took action and bought the business she now calls her own. “A Nest of Needles services a large area,” she says. “I didn’t want to see it close.”

Now the roles have reversed, as Sandra lends a hand from time to time to the store’s new owner.

Originally from Ryley, a little town just east of Edmonton, Linda moved to Crowsnest Pass in 2006 to retire. Her love of the mountains and small town amenities, including golf and curling, beckoned her to live in the Pass.

Quilts of love

By Rachel Miller Every Tuesday, rain or shine, a group of ladies meets at the Golden Age Centre in Stavely. Their only goal is to bring comfort to the lives of those fighting one of the toughest battles anyone could face: cancer.

Lillian Krueger, Germaine Nelson, Deanna Scott, Rusty Wolfe and Linda Emann spend at least three hours each Tuesday sewing quilts.

“There are also a few ladies who sew quilts at home, and this has been a great help,” says Lillian, who leads the group.

The ladies have been together since 2008, and in that time have sent 137 of their beautifully-designed quilts to patients struggling against cancer. The fabric is donated, 100 per cent cotton, filled with soft batting. These quilts provide warmth for the body as well as comfort to the soul for the many folks who receive them.

“That’s why we do it,” says Germaine. “The quilts make them feel good, and get them through a tough spot.”

The ladies sew with good cheer, and look forward to the next session – joking that they miss each other so much between Tuesdays, they have to meet to catch up on everything.

Each quilt comes with its own carrying bag, a very useful accessory for patients going to and from treatments, when warmth and comfort is needed most. Every quilt is also adorned with the simple quote: “Be strong and of good courage. Do not be afraid nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” – Joshua 1:9.

The ladies gratefully acknowledge the use of the craft room in the Golden Age Centre. “I think we are the envy of everyone who sees the facility we sew in,” says Lillian.

“Any emotions and feelings I have, good or bad, are expressed when I dance,” Shaylee says. “I miss the way dancing makes me feel and the fact that it allows me to escape for a while.”

Shaylee utilizes Skype to attend dance classes with her longtime friends at the Turning Pointe Dance Studio in Hillcrest. “It makes me feel like I’m still part of the group, and even though I can’t be physically there, I am always there in spirit.”

One evening Shaylee decided to join in the dancing and her mom had to follow her around the room with the IV pole. Her doctors want her to start getting more active, so hospital staff have been trying to find a space where there is room for her to dance a bit, exercise and do some yoga.

Shaylee’s community, school and fellow dancers joined together last month to put on a lasagna dinner that coincided with Turning Pointe’s annual Festival of the Stars recital. The day was a gala with two performances, dinner, and a silent auction. All money raised will go toward helping cover costs when Shaylee is finally able to come

The event was emotional for all who attended, and Shaylee was thrilled to leave the hospital for her first overnight trip home since she was admitted.

“The first thing I did when I got home was to jump on my bed,” Shaylee says, “I had a bit of time to just stay in my room and enjoy being home before we had to rush off to the fundraiser.”

“It was difficult for me to watch, just because I wanted so much to be out there dancing with them,” she says when reflecting on the performances. “It was great to see how much everyone had improved and I was so proud of the dancers.”

Anyone who witnessed Shaylee running across the parking lot to hug and greet her granny would be hard pressed to believe that this was the image of a young woman with a serious illness.

“I am speechless when I think of how much the community has supported me,” Shaylee says.

“I am so grateful to live in such an awesome community that is so caring, loving and generous. I continue to be appreciative of everything that everyone has done. I cannot say thank you enough!”

It was a day of laughter, tears and love. It was also a highly-successful fundraiser that will lessen the financial burden on Shaylee’s family when she’s able to come home.

Shaylee’s homecoming is still a ways down the road as she faces yet another surgery and recovery

before it’s even a possibility. When the time does come, there will be equipment, medication that isn’t covered, and tube feeds to the tune of about $1,000 per month to cover.

While Shaylee has an exceptional team of GI specialists and has even been to the Mayo Clinic, everyone seems to have different ideas regarding what she needs for treatment. “All we can do is move one step at a time because things can change so quickly for her,” says Shelley.

Both Shaylee and Shelley are quick to praise the hospital staff members who have become good friends. “I can’t thank them enough for all they’ve done,” Shaylee says.

Two nurses and one of Shaylee’s specialists came to Pincher Creek to attend her graduation, which shows how much the staff has come to care for and to respect this courageous young woman.

Shaylee has many great things to look forward to. She’s been accepted to the University of Calgary bachelor of sciences program and intends to pursue a career in medicine. She has already received one scholarship based on her marks alone.

And, perhaps best of all, she’s going to be an auntie soon.

There are good days, bad days, fantastic days and rotten days, but Shaylee has chosen not to feel sorry for herself. She says, “I just take it one day at a time, knowing each day I’m that much closer to going home.”

Art Watmough WATMOUGH: Arthur Watmough of Fort Macleod, beloved husband of Janet Watmough, passed away on May 1, 2012 at the age of 73 years.

Besides his loving wife of 51 years, Arthur is survived by his sons Ron (Sue), Ray (Bonnie), Darcy (Veronica), and Shawn (Janet); 12 grandchildren; five great grandchilren; brothers Jim (Ila), and Lawrence (Kala); sister Alice; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Arthur was predeceased by his parents Jim and Grace.

A memorial service was held on Monday, May 7 at Trinity United Church in Fort Macleod. Reverend Eras Van Zyl officiated.

Shady fundraiser for CNIB

Participants in the Claresholm CNIB Walk Towards Indpendence donned nifty sunglasses indoors and out.

Participants in the eighth annual CNIB Walk Towards Independence enjoyed fellowship, fun, food, fundraising and a sunny spring day May 6.

Eighteen people took part in the walk and raised $5,887.

Over the past eight years the annual event has raised $45,000.

May is Vision Health Month, so participants were encouraged to wear sunglasses.

This served as a reminder that we need to protect our eyes from UV rays in summer, in winter, in sunshine and even on cloudy days.

To add fun, we encouraged walkers to

decorate their sunglasses. Gifts were given to those who accepted the challenge.

The walk was dedicated to the memory of Sheila Maguire, who had faithfully participated in the first seven walks.

Three generations of Sheila’s family, from Calgary and Claresholm, participated which added special moments to the day.

Funds raised go to support services of senior CNIB groups in southern Alberta.

Claresholm Low Vision CNIB Support Group meets the second Monday of the month at 3 p.m. at the Porcupine Hills Lodge. Facilitators are Eloise Crooks and Joyce Mayled.

Notes from the Piikani Nation & Pincher Creek RCMP PRESS RELEASE RCMP are urging motorists to have patience this May long weekend.

Highways all across Alberta are sure to be very busy with a variety of motor vehicles including motorcycles, motor homes, campers, commercial vehicles, and passenger vehicles. The RCMP, along with Alberta Integrated Traffic Services, will be out to increase public compliance and awareness of safe driving measures. Police personnel will be focusing on behavior that puts motorists and other road users at risk including Criminal Code traffic offences (including impaired driving), distracted and aggressive driving offences, as well as speeding and seatbelt compliance.

The RCMP and other officers will be out in numbers this weekend, and

motorists are reminded that while passing any emergency vehicle with its emergency lights activated, drivers must slow to 60 km/h and move to the far lane if it is safe to do so. As well, RCMP are also reminding motorists that they are required to move over to the far right and stop when emergency service vehicles with lights on and sirens sounding are approaching from behind. This will ensure that Police, EMS, and Fire can respond to urgent calls as quickly and safely as possible.

Speeding is a high risk driving behavior that increases the probability of death or injury in a collision. Driving too fast doesn’t allow drivers enough time to react to traffic control devices such as red lights or stop signs or other potential hazards that may be present such as ani-

mals or children darting into roadways.

The public can assist the RCMP by reporting suspected impaired drivers, or other violations of the Traffic Safety Act, by calling 911. Police appreciate the tremendous public support in keeping our communities safe. During May long weekend Police will be conducting Alberta Check Stops at random to further ensure compliance on our highways.

For outdoor enthusiasts, please be reminded that fire bans are currently in place through the majority of the province. Please check with local authorities to ensure that you follow fire restrictions in the area that pertains to you.

RCMP award ceremony celebrates bravery and dedication to duty Pincher Creek officer honoured

PRESS RELEASE May 9, at a ceremony in Edmonton, the Honourable Donald S. Ethell, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, joined Deputy Commissioner Dale McGowan, Commanding Officer of “K” Division RCMP in the presentation of awards for bravery, overseas service, life-saving and long service to RCMP employees.

Richer’s actions prevented further harm to the suspect and RCMP colleagues on scene.

Constable Pernell Cardinal of Hobbema Detachment was commended for risking his own safety to save the life of another. On April 18, 2010, Cst. Cardinal entered a burning home in the Samson Town Site to rescue an occupant.

“A lot of the good work our employees do flies under the radar,” said Deputy Commissioner Dale McGowan, Commanding Officer “K” Division RCMP. “Today’s ceremony gives us the opportunity to celebrate their bravery and dedication to duty in service to their fellow Albertans.”

Sergeant Leon Fiedler of Stony Plain Detachment was commended for risking his own safety to protect the lives of others. On July 12, 2011 at Paul Band First Nation, Alberta, he disarmed an intoxicated, suicidal man who was threatening members of the community with a long-barrel shotgun. Sgt. Fiedler’s actions prevented harm to civilians, the suspect and RCMP colleagues on scene.

Three RCMP Members received the Commanding Officer’s Commendation for Bravery, which recognizes courage in the face of dangerous circumstances beyond those commonly encountered in routine police work.

Constable Olivier Richer of Pincher Creek Detachment was commended for bravery in saving the life of a suicidal man, who had access to 13 firearms, from a burning home near Pincher Creek on June 22, 2011. Cst.

Constable Roderick Doe of Wood Buffalo Detachment received the St. John Ambulance Silver Life Saving Award for saving the life of a man found hanging from a rope in a camping trailer. While awaiting the ambulance, Cst. Doe’s first aid efforts induced a pulse, which resulted in the man’s safe transport to hospital.

Three RCMP Members received awards in recognition of overseas service in support of United Nations Peace Keeping Operations in Sierra Leone and Canadian Forces operations in Afghanistan.

Long Service Awards marking 20 or more years of service were also distributed to 73 “K” Division RCMP employees.

Fire bans issued for forested areas of Alberta Due to dry conditions and high to extreme wildfire hazard, a fire ban is now in place for forested lands in Alberta, from Waterton Lakes National Park to north of Manning and east to north of Fort McMurray.

The fire ban is effective immediately and until further notice.

“The wildfire situation in most of Alberta is serious,” said Environment and Sustainable Resource Development Minister Diana McQueen. “Unfortunately, most of the wildfires we are fighting right now appear to be human-caused and therefore were 100 per cent preventable. It is very important that everyone take precautions to avoid starting fires - it is so dry and windy in many places that fires can start and spread very quickly.”

The fire ban prohibits the lighting of outdoor fires, fireworks and the use of portable campfires. In addition, all outdoor fires currently burning, whether set under the authority of a fire permit or not, must be extinguished. All fire permits issued under the Forest and Prairie Protection Act are suspended in the ban area.

The fire bans do not apply to lands within cities, towns or villages or federal lands where there are no fire control agreements. Many municipalities already have fire bans or prevention notices in their jurisdictions. Current fire ban information is

available at www.albertafirebans.ca.

The ban does not affect fires contained within: a cooking or heating appliance, other than portable campfires, which are fuelled by fluids or compressed gas; an engineered fire receptacle in designated camping and recreation areas; walled tents with air tight stoves with proper screening as approved by a forest officer, and industrial facilities or on industrial sites as approved by a forest officer.

Off-highway vehicle users can reduce the risk of wildfires by removing burnable debris from hot spots such as the engine and exhaust on their machines. All off-highway vehicles in Alberta are required to have a functional muffler and spark arrestor.

People who violate the ban can be charged under the Forest and Prairie Protection Act and could face a fine of up to $5,000. In addition, the responsible party can be held accountable for the costs associated with fighting a resulting fire, with no maximum limit.

The fire hazard will be monitored on a daily basis, and the ban will be removed or adjusted once conditions allow.

Since the beginning of April, firefighters with Environment and Sustainable Resource Development have responded to more than 270 wildfires.

By Steve Becker THIRTEEN -- THE MAGIC NUMBER Bridge is an easy game to play well -- if you put your mind to it.

For example, take this deal where South was in four spades and West led a heart. East won with the jack, cashed the ace, West discarding a diamond, and continued with the king. When declarer trumped with the eight, West overtrumped with the ten and shifted to a diamond, won by declarer with the king.

South played the K-A of spades -- both opponents following -- then cashed the ace of diamonds and led the jack of clubs. West covered with the king, taken by dummy’s ace, and declarer returned to his hand by ruffing the ten of diamonds.

Next came the four of clubs, and when West played the deuce, South successfully finessed dummy’s seven! Declarer then claimed the rest of the tricks, making four spades.

How did South know he should finesse the seven on the second round of clubs?

Was it just a lucky guess? Had he caught a glimpse of an opponent’s hand? The truth is that it was neither. It was really just a matter of counting up to 13.

South learned at trick two that East had started with seven hearts. At trick six he learned that East had started with two spades. When he ruffed the diamond ten at trick nine, he learned that East had started with three diamonds.

With 12 of East’s cards in three suits fully accounted for, it therefore followed that East had started with only one club.

Finessing the seven of clubs was thus not as peculiar a play as it seemed.

Observe that West could not have averted this outcome by playing the eight of clubs rather than the deuce at trick 10.

In that case, declarer would have won with the ten, returned a spade to the jack and finessed the club seven at trick 12 to produce the same result.

A: As with most collectibles, issue date and condition are absolutely vital in determining the value of Barbie dolls. For example, “mint condition” means the doll has never been out of the original box, the coloring is bright and the hair perfect. It also means, of course, that it features the original wardrobe. A rule of thumb dictates that to price out-of-the-box dolls and accessories, deduct 50 percent of the book value for slightly played-with dolls.

“We Need to Talk About Kevin” (R) -- Imagine if your first child just plain hated you since the day he was born. Tilda Swinton plays a woman who puts her dreams aside to start a family, then gives birth to a son, Kevin, who is just impossibly cruel and creepy. Kevin’s father (John C. Reilly) is an affable sort who just doesn’t see it. This movie is unsettling. Rather unsettling. You might remain unsettled after the credits.

No, it’s a far more convoluted plot in which disgraced ex-cop Nick Cassidy (Sam Worthington) says he’s out on a ledge to prove he’s not the diamond thief everyone thinks he is. Already we have the key ingredients to a lukewarm thriller: a story built around a suspense-building gimmick and gem thievery.

While Worthington stands out there talking to the police negotiator (Elizabeth Banks), a young couple (Jamie Bell and Genesis Rodriguez) are pulling a high-tech heist. The movie fails to build much suspense, as the audience knows that Worthington is going to be on a ledge until the other plots advance far enough to give us the twist.

Fiennes just radiates that he “gets” Shakespeare and wants others to see it the way he does. He also understands that a war movie needs heartpounding action. The characters speak in iambic pentameter about the state of Rome, but the adaptation plunges the material into our world -- where war, politics, human nature and public opinion collide just like they always have.

Big and Small ABC’s From a super-size “S” to a teeny tiny “T,” these one-of-a-kind, hands-on ABC’s make learning the alphabet creative and fun for the whole family.

GIANT ABC’s Draw and cut out large block alphabet letters on 12-inch-by-12-inch pieces of poster board, one for each letter. If you wish, you may start with just a few letters, such as the letters of your child’s name.

Take the first letter you have cut out and tell your child that you are going to look for things that begin with the sound of that letter. Lack of Fiber Blamed for Diverticulosis DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a 55-year-old man who finally bit the bullet and had a colonoscopy. My doctor had badgered me to have one for the past five years. I don’t have cancer. I don’t have polyps. I do have diverticulosis. I didn’t know I had it before the scope exam. I’ve never had even a twinge of pain. What is this, and what do I need to do about it?

-- H.L. ANSWER: A diverticulum is a small, balloonlike protrusion of the colon lining through the muscle wall of the colon and onto its outer surface. By “small,” I mean that diverticula range from 0.2 inches to 0.4 inches (0.5 cm to 1 cm) in largest diameter, around the size of a pea. Their cause appears to be a lack of fiber in the diet.

In places where the diet has lots of fiber, diverticulosis is rare. In North America, it’s rampant. Fiber keeps undigested food from drying out.

push it along. Those contractions also push the colon lining through the colon wall, creating a diverticulum.

Diverticulosis is frequently a silent affair, not causing any troubles.

Diverticulitis, on the other hand, is an inflammation and infection of diverticula. That is quite painful. It produces abdominal pain on the left, lower side of the abdomen, often with nausea and vomiting. The diverticula also can burst and release bacteria into the abdominal cavity, a serious situation. Severe diverticulitis must be treated in the hospital with IV fluids and IV antibiotics.

To prevent diverticulosis from becoming diverticulitis, increase your fiber intake. Fiber is the indigestible coverings of many fruits, vegetables and grains. White flour is refined wheat -- wheat without its outer coat, the bran. Bran and other sources of fiber draw water into undigested food and make it easily pushed along the entire length of the colon.

We’re supposed to get 25 to 35 grams of fiber a day. Beans, whole-grain cereals, whole-grain breads, dates, prunes, unskinned apples and pears are examples of fiber-rich foods. If you cannot get enough fiber from foods, then commercial products such as Fiberall, Metamucil, Citrucel and FiberCon can provide it for you.

Basil Orange Chicken Marinating the chicken in orange and basil gives it a bright, fresh flavor. Served over whole-wheat couscous with steamed sugar snap peas, this light dish is perfect for warmer weather.

1 large navel orange 2 lemons 1/2 cup packed fresh basil leaves, chopped 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt Pepper 4 (1 1/2 pounds) skinless, boneless chicken-breast halves 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1 cup whole-wheat couscous 1 package (8 ounces) stringless sugar snap peas Grilled orange and lemon slices for garnish

1. From orange, grate 1 1/2 teaspoons peel and squeeze 4 tablespoons juice.

From lemons, grate 1 1/2 teaspoons peel and squeeze 1/3 cup juice.

2. In medium bowl, combine 1 teaspoon of each peel and 1 tablespoon orange juice with half of basil, 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper.

3. With flat side of meat mallet, pound chicken breasts (placed between 2 sheets plastic wrap) to an even 1/2-inch thickness. Add chicken to citrus mixture, turning to coat; set aside.

4. In small pitcher or bowl, combine sugar, 1/8 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper and remaining citrus peels, citrus juices, basil, and oil; set aside.* 5. Preheat large, ridged grill pan or prepare outdoor grill for direct grilling on medium-high.

6. Meanwhile, prepare couscous as label directs. In 4 quart saucepan filled with 1/2 inch water, place a vegetable steamer. Heat to boiling on high.

7. Add chicken to hot grill pan or place on hot grill grate; cook 4 minutes. Turn chicken over and cook 3 to 4 minutes longer or until no longer pink in center.

8. While chicken is cooking on second side, add snap peas to steamer; cook 2 to 3 minutes or until tendercrisp. Fluff couscous and spoon onto large platter; top with chicken and snap peas. Drizzle sauce over all.

PHOTO CREDIT: stock.xchg photo Solving the Great Vegetable Debate There is some debate about whether cooked or raw vegetables are better for you. The short answer is -- don’t choose, have both!

The case for cooking vegetables: Lycopene content in tomatoes is actually increased when tomatoes are cooked. Lycopene is a phytochemical that is responsible for the red color of the tomato. Studies have linked high lycopene intake with lower risk of cancer and heart attacks. It is a powerful antioxidant.

Antioxidants help prevent or repair damage to body cells, which is important for decreasing the risk of cancer. They also are thought to improve immune function.

Cooking carrots increases the beta carotene content. Beta carotene is an antioxidant that the body converts to vitamin A, another antioxidant. It also helps promote normal vision, protect from infection and regulate the immune system.

There also might be additional antioxidant activity in cooked spinach, mushrooms, asparagus, cabbage and peppers. The cooking method found to be the best for preserving antioxidants was boiling or steaming. Frying is not recommended because the antioxidants get used up in the frying process.

The case for eating raw vegtables: Sometimes raw vegetables are better. For example, polyphenols, which also are antioxidants, are lost when carrots are cooked. In broccoli, heat damages the enzyme myrosinase. Myrosinase breaks down compounds in broccoli to form another compound called sulforaphane, which may kill precancerous cells. Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant found in many of the vegetables mentioned, can be destroyed by heat.

To get the best of both worlds and to put an end to the debate, it’s recommended that we alternate consumption of raw and cooked vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. This recipe for Rainbow Salad With Spicy Tomato Dress-

ing contains both raw and cooked vegetables.

There’s no debate -- this dish is great!

RAINBOW SALAD This salad keeps well in the refrigerator and makes a delicious vegetarian lunch or a side dish for dinner. Use leftover cooked and reheated vegetables, if desired, or select the vegetables of your choice for the raw ingredients.

Cooked vegetables: 1/2 tablespoon salt for boiling water, plus 1/2 tablespoon for cold ice bath 1/2 pound green or white asparagus 1/2 pound fresh green beans, trimmed and cut in half 1 cup fresh or frozen corn 1/2 medium purple onion, thinly sliced 1 cup sweet peas, fresh or frozen 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar Add salt to a large pot of water and bring to a boil. Wash, remove tough stalks on the asparagus and cut in half. Add all of the vegetables to the boiling water and cook for 2 to 3 minutes.

To keep vegetables crunchy and colors bright, place vegetables in bowl filled with cold water and the remaining 1/2 tablespoon of the salt for 2 to 3 minutes. Remove vegetables from the water and drain. Place in large salad bowl, toss with with pepper and vinegar, and set aside.

Raw vegetables: 1 crown broccoli, leaves removed, cut into florets 1 cup baby carrots 6 radishes, trimmed, thinly sliced 1 cup, whole red or yellow cherry tomatoes, cut in half 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Toss raw vegetables, vinegar and pepper.

Combine with cooked vegetables. Sprinkle with fresh mint, parsley, basil and chervil, if desired.

Serve with a drizzle of Spicy Tomato Dressing (recipe follows), if desired.

Spicy Tomato Dressing: 3 large, ripe tomatoes Juice of half a freshly squeezed lemon or lime 1/2 teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 to 3 teaspoons hot sauce 2 to 3 tablespoons olive oil 1. Peel, seed and cut tomatoes into quarters.

Using a food processer or blender, mix together tomatoes, juice, salt, pepper and hot sauce.

With blender or processor on low, slowly add olive oil down the feeding tube until mixture thickens slightly and is well-combined.

2. Drizzle over salad. Serves 6 to 8.

The frequent scratching that occurs with a flea infestation can result in scratched and broken skin, sometimes leading to an infection. And, many dogs are allergic to the “flea dust” left behind by fleas -- literally, their droppings -- and can continue having a reaction, including hair loss and frequent scratching, after the fleas are gone.

A skin infection can be treated with antibiotics. An allergic reaction can be treated, in the short term, with a steroid, which will reduce irritation and swelling. Be sure to

dust, vacuum and thoroughly clean your home, including bedding and furniture, to reduce the allergens -- including flea dust that was left behind -- in Ladybird’s environment.

Keep in contact with your vet about any improvement or lack of improvement in her condition. Her hair could take several weeks to grow back fully, but you want to make sure the source of the skin problem is dealt with.

• From charcoal grilling expert Kingsford, here’s a great tip to use when grilling chicken: “When applying a dry rub to chicken pieces, it’s often hard to keep the rub affixed, and it’s even more difficult to keep the chicken’s original, golden color. Try ‘painting’ chicken pieces with yellow mustard prior to applying the rub. Not only will the rub stay in place, your final product will be visually appealing -- without any trace of mustard flavor.”

• When wrapping vegetables in foil packets to grill, make the seams on the sides. This way, the veggie packets can be turned over for even cooking and to avoid burning on one side. You can even label the outside of the foil in permanent marker. It won’t affect the taste of the food.

• On May 19, 1715, the colony of New York passes a law making it illegal to “gather, rake, take up, or bring to the market, any oysters whatsoever” during May, June, July and August. This regulation was only one of many that were passed in the early days of America to help preserve certain species.

• On May 17, 1792, a group of 24 traders gather under a buttonwood tree at 68 Wall Street in lower Manhattan to work out the regulations of the speculative market. The result was the Buttonwood Agreement, a two-sentence contract that gave birth to the New York Stock Exchange.

• On May 20, 1873, Levi Strauss secures the necessary patents for canvas pants with copper rivets to reinforce the stress points. Unable to sell a large supply of

canvas in the California mining camps, Strauss had hit on the idea of using the durable material to make work pants for miners.

• On May 18, 1917, six weeks after the United States formally enters the First World War, the U.S. Congress passes the Selective Service Act, giving the president the power to draft soldiers. By the end of World War I in November 1918, some 24 million men had registered.

• On May 16, 1929, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences hands out its first awards. The Academy officially began using the nickname Oscar for its awards in 1939. The name possibly arose when Academy executive director Margaret Herrick remarked that the statuette looked like her Uncle Oscar.

• On May 14, 1944, “Star Wars” filmmaker George Lucas was born in Modesto, Calif. Lucas was the first director to hold out for ancillary rights, and in the 20 years following the release of “Star Wars,” he sold more than $3 billion in movie-based merchandise.

• On May 15, 1982, “Ebony and Ivory,” a duet by Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder, takes the top spot in the Billboard Hot 100.
