My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin This Sunday is Father’s Day – a day to do something special with or for the big guy in our lives.

The old saying “Father knows best” often comes to mind, and with it, thoughts of how often we choose not to heed advice from our fathers when it’s given.

I’m one who often makes my own way through mistakes rather than taking advice when offered. It’s funny how that works.

My dad has been a pretty good sport about it, although I’m sure at times I’ve frustrated him greatly.

The older we both get, the more likely it seems he is to bite his tongue and let me learn from my scraped knees and ego bruises. At the same time, I’m more likely to ask for a bit of advice here and there and to take advantage of what he has to offer.

My dad has been one of the most influencial people in my life, and I try to live up to the example he has set.

As a father, Dad has loved my brother, my sister and me regardless of what degree of hot water we have found ourselves in, and has always been proud of our endeavours.

As a husband, Dad has treated my mom as the treasure she is, for almost 50 years. They’ve set a wonderful example to pass on to future generations of our family.

As a grandfather, Dad has given the

very best of himself to my daughter and to my nephew. No one can make Jaiden laugh like Poppo can!

As a friend, Dad is empathetic and compassionate, and many turn to him for advice or simply a shoulder to lean on.

As a journalist, Dad was always fair in his reporting and didn’t hesitate to step in when a situation was out of balance. He was a mentor to many and I count myself as one.

As a businessman, Dad treated his employees respectfully and fairly, to a degree I have never experienced from another boss.

As a community member, Dad led many committees, and his hometown as a whole, through his term as mayor. He is a problem-solver and many continue to look to him for guidance and ideas.

My dad has been a community promoter and activist without expecting anything in return, although he has received recognition for his contributions on local, provincial and national levels and has deserved every accolade.

Being with him as he received the Order of Canada five years ago was my proudest moment as a daughter.

My dad is now 65 and adjusting to the changes in life that come along with “officially” becoming a senior citizen.

His story is one of strength of character and determination, and I look forward to what the chapters ahead will bring.

The Breeze Mailbox More about geocaching My wife and I have been geocaching since February 2002. We have logged over 7,400 caches in six provinces, 41 states and Mexico. We have also hidden more than 80 caches in Alberta, Montana and Arizona.

Geocaching is worldwide, with approximately 1.5 million caches hidden in 270 countries.

Another very interesting part of this sport is the tracking of travel bugs or geocoins. A travel bug would be some type of article a person can trace as it moves from cache to cache. We have approximately 60 travellers out, and some have logged over 30,000 miles.

In 2007, we put a mailbox on the fence on our property here in Cowley, where geocachers can trade travel bugs and geocoins. We call it Welcome to Cowley’s Travel Bug Motel, and since 2007 we have had over 400 visitors from parts of Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia.

Geocaching is a very inexpensive sport, as one needs only a GPS receiver and a love of adventure.

says. “This year we also saw a few who have recently lost loved ones to suicide come out to support it. This is really special because you know what they’re going through.”

Money raised in the past has gone to create a comfort room at the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre in Blairmore and to purchase resources for Blairmore Mental Health. Proceeds from the walk have also covered the salary of a social co-ordinator (through Blairmore Mental Health) to organize activities for people going through counselling as well as the cost of those activities.

A $1,000 scholarship will be given this year to a student of Crowsnest Consolidated High School going on to post-secondary studies in health sciences.

Two defined plans are in place for

next year.

First is an awareness campaign, targeting elementary and junior high kids, and a community intiative during Mental Health Awareness Month in May. Second is to provide funding for first responders, RCMP members, teachers, and people in similar positions, to take Mental Health First Aid training. This will help professionals deal with people who are going through a mental crisis.

The Rinaldi family is open to suggestions from the public for other mental health projects in need of financial support.

That’s right!

This weekend Nanton is hosting its first open equine show, sponsored by the Alberta Donkey and Mule Club. All breeds are welcome, and horses, mules, donkeys and miniatures are expected. With 85 classes and all age groups – eight and under, junior, intermediate and seniors – there is room for everyone.

The show runs Saturday and Sunday, starting at 8:30 a.m, at the Nanton Agriculture Grounds.

A concession will be available.

“There will be a dinner, live and silent auction, the Young Gunz Trick Riders, a chore team competition, free camping and vendors as well,” says Alice Todd, the show co-ordinator.

“The sponsors have been amazing, absolutely wonderful, so there will be ribbons as well as prize money,” she says. “The judges will be Lee McLean and Ryan Smith, both well-known and respected in their fields.”

There are many classes to participate in, such as western, English, trail, reining, driving, costume and gymkhana.

Tack will be sold or given away at the show, and private sales of animals will also take place.

National spotlight shines on volunteers

By Shannon Robin If you know Jacqui Bruns, and happened to run into her over the past few weeks, you may have noticed that she’s been bubbling over with enthusiasm.

Jacqui was one of many volunteers who participated in fundraising for and construction of the Hank Planger Community Playground in Pincher Creek two years ago.

Since the build, she has been collaborating with Ian Hill and Gina Lopez Hill who, on behalf of Let Them Be Kids, have produced a full-length documentary film featuring five Canadian playground builds.

The premiere local showing of the documentary on Sunday was an opportunity to learn more about LTBK and to celebrate the Pincher Creek effort, which will be showcased across the country this fall.

“The documentary shows that every person can make a difference,” Jacqui says. “Everybody needs to step up, and together we can overcome negative things happening in our communities.”

There were some touching moments in the clips, and each community effort was valiant.

The Pincher Creek project left a strong impression on the Hills, and Ian acknowledged Ron Schmidt as one of the most dedicated volunteers he has come across.

“Ron truly stands out as a shining example of a guy who said you never get to retire from being a citizen,” Ian said.

“He was awesome,” Jacqui adds. “He showed a level of commitment that blew us away.”

Ian and Gina hope the documentary will inspire other communities and groups to take on important projects they might otherwise be intimidated by.

“You have a great community,” Ian said in his opening remarks. “I love the atmosphere and I love the people. You’ve shown us what can happen when a community comes together.”

He compared building a playground to a barn raising where people come together, work together, and then can enjoy the fruits of their labour.

LTBK helps groups, schools, and communities by extending their financial resources and providing comprehensive support. Combined with strong groups of people who believe in their goals, amazing things have been happening across Canada.

As a result of LTBK projects, communities have typically seen an increase in volunteerism and a greater sense of pride and ownership. Local service groups had displays set up on Sunday and hopefully will see some

A playground is a place to build physical and mental health and a gathering spot for families. The Hank Planger Community Playground is a legacy that will remind us of the positive force generated when the people of Pincher Creek come together.

Those who helped not only built a playground, they built community and set an example for us all.

“To me, the documentary really captured the excitement and the enormity of the project,” Jacqui says. “Ian has a recipe for success, and our success will be positively showcased across the country through this effort.”

The couple raised their children, Norma and Altie, on the ranch on the Oldman River, north of Cowley. Jane moved to Pincher Creek in 1972 after Bud passed away.

Jane held many jobs in Pincher Creek.

“I’ve worked at most of the hotels and motels,” she says. “I also worked at the Bloomin’ Inn for five years, and we had a few of my birthday parties there as well.”

Jane has been an active community volunteer, helping at the hospital and with home care programs. In 2003, she was honoured as the oldest volunteer in the province.

Although she has always lived in the Pincher Creek region, Jane has made a few trips to Alaska to visit family, and has also travelled to Scotland. While a resident of Crestview Lodge in Pincher Creek, Jane has been on bus trips throughout province, visiting many towns and enjoying the scenery along the way.

Jane is grateful for her friends and family who help her now. “My worst problem is my eyesight,” she says. “I do have a machine

Jane gathers with her children and their families on weekends for a meal out at the ranch, where her grandson continues to lease land and raise livestock.

“I was taught never to throw away a crust of bread,” she says. “The waste of food these days is a terrible thing.”

Jane still holds a keen interest in farming and last month observed, “It’s been a strange winter. It’s quite dry now and the farmers have finished their planting.”

In May, Jane celebrated a “quieter” birthday than last year, when four generations of her family attended the party. Her family includes two children, three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. This year, family, friends and relatives from as far away as Alaska stopped by to congratulate her on reaching another milestone.

Jane was also an honoured guest at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebration on Victoria Day at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village in Pincher Creek. She received a framed photo and letter signed by Queen Elizabeth to commemorate her special day.

Catch local performers at The Gathering This weekend everyone is invited to take in The Gathering in Pincher Creek.

The cowboy poetry event is celebrating its 25th anniversary and a top-notch show has been put together.

A highlight is always the local entertainers who will be on stage at the community hall and the Horseshoe Pavilion.

By Tina Webber This newspaper has given me the opportunity to write about some important souls that have graced my life. I know many of you have pets and can relate to this devotion.

As a child, I grew up with the unconditional love of one who thought of me beyond her own wants and safety.

This was my constant companion and friend, a German shepherd named Toga. She would have given her life for me and, frankly, I would have done the same for her.

At nine months old, Toga was a big dog with a bark that stated she was a force to be reckoned with. From the first time I could touch that fur and look deep into her eyes, I was bonded to that soul. A bond that would last for many years, and one I would never forget. Her adoption into our family changed my childhood and therefore the rest of my life. She died quietly one day at the age of 11, much too soon for me.

Wanting my son to experience the same type of relationship, we adopted a six-month-old springer spaniel when my son was 18 months. They were adorable together, Matthew tugging on those soft brown ears and fur. The dog, Sasha, would take it all in stride until she tired of his attention and, in an almost maternal way, stopped him

from standing by gently pushing on his bum as he bent over to stand. After the third or fourth try, Matthew would sit down and cry in frustration over having his attempts to stand thwarted. The dog, however, lay down to sleep looking relaxed and almost smiling!

When my son was four, he said the dog got out of the yard and he followed, but I have a feeling it was the opposite.

He was missing almost six hours.

Needless to say, I was frantic after being told that if he was not found by dinner time, send a crisis counsellor would be sent to talk with me. “Don’t bother,” I said, for if it came to that, it would not help. They did find him about two blocks away, with the dog that would not leave him even for a drink of water.

We had to put Sasha down at the age of 12. I had been through many difficult situations already, but that was the most painful. I was given the options of dropping her off at the vet or staying. I stayed with her because it was the least I could do after a lifetime of devotion. I watched the life fade from her eyes after the lethal dose. Her passing was so very gentle it made me wish mine would be as peaceful, while being held by one who loved you enough to stay.

I vowed afterward that I would not get another. That vow lasted about two years.

The spirit of giving In April we ran a story about Kathy and Peter Janzen of Pincher Creek and their project to make bags for the Mennonite Central Committee.

The bags are filled with school supplies or health care items and distributed to needy people around the world.

The Janzens had run out of fabric, and we hoped the story and a corresponding classified ad would encourage people to donate any extra fabric they might have for this worthwhile project.

Kathy says the response has been

incredible and at this point she isn’t able to accept any further donations.

Jean Clark of Coleman, pictured at right, hadn’t seen the original story, but in response to the classified ad she donated two garbage bags full of new fabric of all kinds.

Jean once enjoyed sewing clothing for herself and her children, but is no longer able to sew due to failing eyesight.

RCMP are warning the public that a wellknown computer scam has surfaced in the area. This scam has been seen in Ontario and Manitoba in the spring of 2011 and Regina in the fall of 2011.

The scam usually starts with a telephone call from a person identifying themselves as working for Microsoft. The caller states that Microsoft has noticed a large number of error messages coming from your computer and they will fix the problem if you allow the caller to have remote access to your computer. The caller will quote a professional looking website to verify their claims and will even give an address and phone number if asked. The scam artist will offer to sell you anti virus software that can fix your computer and will ask for your credit card number to pay for the software. The problem is...the caller does not work for Microsoft. The caller is a scam artist!

The scam artist now would have access to your credit card information and can run up fraudulent charges and they also can access sensitive information from your computer while they have remote access to it.

If you receive this type of call, hang up. Do not give the caller any information and never give your credit card number or other personal information to companies unless you initiated the call to them.

If you think you may have been the victim of this type of scam, have a professional company check your computer for any viruses or spyware that may have been installed into your computer.

Chiropractic services now covered for seniors PRESS RELEASE More than 450,000 Alberta seniors will be eligible for chiropractic services coverage as of July 1. Expanding the coverage fulfills a commitment the Alberta government made in Budget 2012.

Albertans enrolled in the Coverage for Seniors health benefit plan will receive $25 per visit to use towards chiropractic services, to a maximum of $200 per annual benefit period. The benefit plan is sponsored by Alberta Health and administered by Alberta Blue Cross.

“Helping seniors to manage their health and well-being in the community is a priority for government,” said Fred Horne, Alberta Minister of Health.

“Adding chiropractic coverage will give more seniors access to services that may help them stay active and enjoy a better quality of life.”

On Thursday, June 21, HeadSmashed-In Buffalo Jump offers a full day of activities to mark National Aboriginal Day. Visitors can sample delicious Blackfoot delicacies, enjoy superb First Nations performers and take guided tours of the interpretive centre, available throughout the day. A shuttle service will take visitors from the parking lot to the buffalo jump site.

National Aboriginal Day celebrations include: • welcome and opening remarks (ceremonies begin at 10:30 a.m.); • opening prayer - Blackfoot Elder; flag raising song - Blackfoot Drum Group; • drumming and dancing (performances at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.); • traditional food sampling; • First Nations arts and crafts; and story telling.

Slip slidin’ away – Shell 50th anniversary

Shell Waterton put on a big party in Pincher Creek Saturday to celebrate 50 years of operation.

Gas was first produced at the plant in 1962, and the company employs 140 people.

The day was purely one of celebration, and there was no lack of fun things to do such as the kids on the slide at left, a bouncy castle, performances and serenades from HOJA, beef on a bun by Perfect Party Planners, and delectable goodies by Celestial Sweets.

Darcy’s Nature Walk Almost 200 people walked the five-kilometre trail from Fireman’s Park in Bellevue, Saturday, to support mental wellness in Crowsnest Pass.

The scenery was lovely and young and old had a wonderful morning!

Over $7,600 was raised toward mental wellness projects through the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation.

Darcy’s Nature Walk Climbing through a barbwire fence was an interesting thing to do! A smarter person than I would have taken a moment to remove their great big backpack before attempting to climb through!

There were a few steep sections to navigate, and the youngest in the group still had enough energy to zip up the hills without any trouble just past the mid-way point.

Documenting a labour of love

By Amber Lee Mohl and Shannon Robin It’s every kid’s right to just be a kid.

And the Hank Planger Community Playground lets kids do just that.

Pincher Creek boasts a fantastic playground built over the summer of 2010 thanks to outstanding community efforts.

With a rubber surface for wheelchair accessibility and activity panels for kids with sensory needs, the playground was built to accommodate each and every child.

In February 2010, a group of parents formed the Hank Planger Community Playground Group to address the need for a new playground that would be accessible everyone.

Committee chair Chelan Citrigno was joined by Jacqui Bruns, Colette Sinnott, Terri Robbins, Jennifer Parker, Kayne Evans, Ron Schmidt and Michael Gouthro and the group pulled off the incredible feat of building the park only four months after fundraising began.

Partnering with the national organization Let Them Be Kids meant half the equipment would be paid for, but the group had to cover all other costs such as gravel and grass, along with supplying all of the labour.

The community stepped up, and “the whole thing was built in June 2010,” says committee member Jacqui Bruns.

“There was money left over, so we went back to the community and asked if there was anything we had missed.”

This led to a second phase of the park which includes a full outdoor fitness centre, wheelchair and stroller accessibility, and a sensory area. Phase 2 was completed in June of 2011.

The playground is located on the grounds of St. Michael’s school, but is there for the entire community to use and enjoy.

“It’s a hub for families to spend time together – parents can work out in the fitness park while their kids play,” Jacqui says.

Let Them Be Kids “gives you a model of success,” says Jacqui. “We were told to talk about it with everyone you know.

We got a ton of money from companies to support the project.”

Of over 100 playgrounds supported

by LTBK, the Pincher Creek park is the largest, and the town has been noted “as the community that got the most behind it,” she says.

Volunteers build strong communities, and strong communities are proud ones.

The pride and commitment demonstrated by everyone who supported the project will soon be showcased nationwide!

“In June 2010 we built the whole thing, in June 2011 we added phase two, and in June 2012 we’ll be screening a documentary featuring what we did in our town,” Jacqui says.

The full-length film, which will be shown locally June 10, shares the story of five Canadian communities and their LTBK projects. Pincher Creek happens to be one of them.

“There are 10,000 DVDs of the documentary that will be sent out to every town, city, MD and school division in Canada,” Jacqui says.

“This will highlight that Pincher Creek really is a great place to live.”

“I think it’s pretty big that we were remembered out of more than 125 projects,” she says. “It’s huge exposure for the town to get this kind of recognition for free.”

According to the LTBK website, “The purpose of the film is to inspire community action and community improvement across Canada.”

The movie is being entered in major film festivals across North America, which will give Pincher Creek and its volunteers international exposure.

The playground is dedicated to Hank Planger, a Second World War hero who was a member of the Devil’s Brigade, an elite fighting unit.

LTBK founder Ian Hill encourages communities to name playgrounds after fallen heroes; Hank Planger is the only commemorated hero still living.

Ian and his family will be on hand June 10 to speak at the documentary viewing.

There will also be booths to highlight the many volunteer opportunities available in the Pincher Creek area, and free beef on a bun for supper.

Volunteering is a labour of love. “You don’t volunteer to get personal recognition,” says Jacqui.

Let Them Be Kids, a non-profit organization run on a volunteer basis, was created to build playgrounds, skate parks and recreational areas for children across the country. Its goal is to inspire others and bring together communities everywhere.

“Drop Dead Healthy: One Man’s Quest for Bodily Perfection”

by A.J. Jacobs (Simon & Schuster, $26) Reviewed by Larry Cox Bestselling author A.J. Jacobs (“The Year of Living Biblically” and “The Know-It-All”) chronicles his two-year quest to retool his body from a “mushy, easily-winded, moderately sickly blob” to a perfect specimen in his new book, “Drop Dead Healthy.” Think of it as a “Super-Size Me” in reverse.

His first step was to compile a list of things he needed to do to improve his health. The list soon became a whopping 70 pages that including goals such as eating more leafy green vegetables, watching more baseball (since it lowers blood pressure), lifting weights, humming to prevent sinus infections and even winning an Academy Award, since he read that Oscar winners live three years longer than non-Oscar winners.

Jacobs broke down his body into various parts, from lungs to stomach to brain to lower back and beyond. As his wife rolled her eyes and made occasional pithy observations, Jacobs trudged on, implementing a “Vice Diet” that included more chocolate, booze and coffee, since he reasoned that chocolate is high in antioxidants, alcohol is good for the heart in judicious amounts, and coffee lowers the odds of certain types of cancer.

He explored the benefits of “chewdaism,” chewing on food for up to 100 chomps per mouthful.

He also added raw foods to his diet, learned portion control and figured out ways to eliminate as much sugar as possible.

Part memoir, part adventure, part how-to manual, “Drop Dead Healthy” is laugh-out-loud funny and tests our culture’s assumptions and obsessions with what makes for good health. Brimming with data, photographs and a narrative that is both inspiring and witty, Jacob’s saga will have you laughing so hard it will flood your bloodstream with endorphins, making you feel healthier after just a few pages.

Consider this deal played in a World Bridge Olympiad match between Canada and the United States. When the Canadians held the North-South cards, they reached seven spades on the sequence shown, and West led a heart, won by South with the nine.

Declarer played the queen of spades at trick two and, after West followed with the deuce, had to make a critical decision. After giving full weight to all factors -- including East’s “unusual notrump” overcall promising length in hearts and clubs -- South finessed the queen, lost to East’s singleton king and so went down one. Of course, had declarer gone up with the ace instead, he would have scored 2,210 points!

South’s decision certainly can’t be faulted, since he made the play that was likely to win far more often than

it would lose. Perhaps the finger of blame can be pointed more correctly at South for his decision to carry on to seven spades, rather than passing six.

At the other table, the U.S. NorthSouth pair stopped at six spades.

West led the jack of clubs, ruffed by South. Taking no chances, declarer led the queen of spades to the ace, caught the king and so made the slam with an overtrick for a score of 1,460 points.

Hill’s character still has some resentment over the way he was treated in high school, and Tatum’s character is surprised to find that in modernday, upper-middle class schools, the jockish bully isn’t guaranteed instant popularity like they were in the ‘80s (or at least ‘80s teen movies.) It’s an irreverent comedy that keeps up the pace with quick laughs.

A movie that came out last year was made without sound or color, and then it brought home five Oscars, including best picture and best actor. It’s natural to suspect it of being a high-brow snoozefest -- it’s a silent film that came out in 2011, and yet all the critics love it. But there’s nothing inaccessible about it; it’s just an earnest, old-fashioned movie that entertains.

Set in 1927, George Valentin (Jean DuJardin) is the biggest star on the silent-movie scene just as talkies are about to take off. While his career loses momentum and starts to fall, young actress Peppy Miller (Bérénice Bejo) starts her climb to the top.

“Mirror Mirror” (PG) -- The wicked queen (Julia Roberts) is a wildly vain woman who spends her kingdom into financial trouble, apparently by investing all the nation’s wealth on elaborate costume design for her and save

Director Tarsem Singh injects every frame with vivid color and elaborate designs. The visual flair isn’t enough to make the story shine, however.

But don’t worry, if you still want a visually stunning retelling of Snow White, Hollywood has another one just around the corner.

“21 Jump Street” (R) -- Loosely (very loosely) based on the ‘80s TV drama of the same name, this film knows it has a dumb premise, and uses that as comedy fuel. “Wrath of the Titans” (PG-13) -- Just like its 2010 predecessor, “Clash of the Titans,” this computer-generated myth movie has a lot of swords and not much of a script. Party Favors Hide Dinosaurs Inside Every preschooler I know loves outdoor summer fun, birthday parties and anything to do with dinosaurs.

Put that combination together, and it’s likely that a dinosaur-themed party will be somewhere in your parenting repertoire during the early years.

So save this recipe and use it when it’s time to create sandy triceratops party favors. These surprises inspired by another place in time are something the kids will never forget.

If there are older kids in the family who have already earned their degree in the dino phase, let them get their hands in the mix and help you prepare this sand-goop recipe to make triceratops party favors for their younger brother’s or sister’s party. Once this sand clay is off the stove and has cooled (yes, you’ll be cooking sand!), mold it around plastic eggs containing little plastic or rubber dinosaurs. If you don’t have plastic eggs, mold the sand clay around the toys to form a ball. Anyway you do it, let them dry a few days until hard.

On the day of your party, pass one out to each child, or hide them in your yard for guests to find in a treasure hunt. Invite them all to follow you to the sidewalk. Tell them to tap-tap-tap their eggs against the concrete. The eggs will break after a few tentative hits, and voila! Your party guests have just hatched a slew of baby dinos into the world! Perfect for a “birthday” favor.

As it becomes warm, it will begin to liquefy. Continue to stir for 2-3 minutes until clay thickens. Remove from heat and spoon mixture onto cutting board. Let cool.

Suspicious Pap Smear Isn’t Death Sentence DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you please say a few words about the prognosis and treatment of cervical cancer? My daughter, 45, was told at a recent checkup that she has a few cells of this kind, and she is reacting as if she has received a death sentence. Since it was caught early, should her outlook be more cheerful? -- J.B. ANSWER: All women are indebted to Dr. George Papanicolaou, who developed the Pap smear for the early detection of cervical cancer. The cervix, by the way, is the necklike projection of the uterus into the vagina. It was the site for the most common cause of cancer death in women before the Pap smear came into wide use.

and 12,200 new cases detected each year. Most of the deaths are in women who did not have Pap smear testing.

I’m not clear what you mean by “a few cells of this kind.” If the cells obtained on a smear show lowgrade changes, a woman’s chances of having cervical cancer are close to zero. Follow-up smears are the only treatment needed. If the cells show high-grade changes, the doctor will perform a colposcopy.

Colposcopy is an examination of the cervix with an instrument that has a magnifying lens so suspicious areas can be readily seen and biopsied. Results determine what the next steps should be. However, at these stages -- long before the cancer has spread -- it is still quite curable.

Your daughter can trust her doctor to take the appropriate steps depending on the results of her Pap test. She does not face a death sentence. If she has any questions about her diagnosis, she should call her doctor for an explanation of her test results.

8 (12-inch) wooden skewers or 4 long metal skewers 2 small (about 6 ounces each) zucchini, cut diagonally into 3/4-inch-thick slices 1 red pepper, cut into 1 1/4-inch pieces 1/2 small Vidalia onion, cut into 4 wedges, keeping wedges intact 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon olive oil 2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning 1 package (16 ounces) light kielbasa or other fully cooked smoked sausage, cut diagonally into 1-inch chunks 1 large stalk celery, chopped 1 package (8.8 ounces) white rice, fully cooked 1 medium tomato, chopped 2 tablespoons water 1. Prepare outdoor grill for covered direct grilling over medium heat. Meanwhile, soak wooden skewers in water 15 minutes.

De-Cluttering For Mental Health Q: My husband has claimed pretty much the entire garage with his workshop, tools and lawn-care equipment. A lot of it is necessary, but he just keeps collecting stuff. He’s got least three of the same screwdrivers and wrenches, and endless jars of old screws, nails and fasteners. I’d love to be able to park one of our cars in there. Or at least, you know, walk around without tripping over stuff.

Talk directly to him about it -- the trick being not to accuse, nag or cajole him. He may not be very receptive to your request that he give you enough space to park the car in the garage, but tell him that’s what you want. Don’t build it into an argument; he’s likely to just dig his heels in and not budge at all. Instead, try to get him to talk about what he’d really like to do with the space. It’s hard to work in a messy workshop; did he have any projects planned that he hasn’t yet started? Does he really just want a place to get away for a few hours? Find out what he wants, and see if you can work from there.

One option you might bring up is that the extra tool sets and other unneeded items can be sold by throwing a yard sale or putting them up online on a sales or auction site. The profit can be used to buy an item for the workshop, like a power tool, a refrigerator or an old couch.

HOME TIP: A tackle box is one way to store different sizes and types of fasteners like bolts, nuts, washers, and so on. It’s portable and allows for quick access to the items you need to complete a repair.

PHOTO CREDIT: stock.xchg photo Create an Italian Grill After almost 40 years of living in Texas, I’ve grown a bit tired of the brisket, ribs, burgers, hot dogs and chicken menu typically served at most barbeques. Even the side dishes from coleslaw to potato salad to beans could use a makeover. If you’ve run out of ideas for a holiday barbeque menu, try grilling Italian style! The beauty of making Italian dishes on the grill is that your guests can enjoy familiar dishes with a twist, served in a unique outdoor setting.

Eggplant is found often in Italian dishes. It’s easy to grill and can be used in a variety of ways to please meat lovers, vegetarians and children.

Improperly prepared eggplant can be slimy or bitter. To avoid bitterness, select young, tender eggplants with shiny skins that give slightly under light pressure. Overly mature eggplants can develop a bitter flavor. If you prepare and cook eggplant correctly, it’s delicious, and grilling makes it even more flavorful.

My recipe for Grilled Eggplant Caponata is the perfect appetizer when served with grilled slices of bread, or makes an excellent Panini sandwich. You also can grill flatbread or pizza dough, pile the Caponata on top and sprinkle it with grated cheeses. It’s a delicious main course when tossed with hot pasta, or an excellent side dish when served cold as a pasta salad or tossed with crisp salad greens.

Any way you serve Grilled Eggplant Caponata, it’s delicious!

GRILLED EGGPLANT CAPONATA Most vegetarians prefer that their food be cooked separately from the place on the grill where the meat is prepared. Clean your grill

and prepare the vegetarian menu items first, or if you have a large grill, make sure that the meat and the vegetables are separate.

4 large portabella mushrooms 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 small red onions, cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices 2 small eggplants (about 1 1/4 pounds each), cut into 3/4-inch-thick slices 3 red, yellow or green bell peppers (or a combination), stems, ribs and seeds removed, and cut in half 4 medium celery stalks 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 6 medium plum tomatoes (about 1 1/2 pounds), cut into 1/2-inch chunks 1 cup kalamata, Gaeta or green Sicilian olives, pitted and chopped 1/4 cup golden raisins 3 tablespoons drained capers 1/2 cup loosely packed fresh Italian parsley leaves or basil Dressing: 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon sugar or stevia 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper 1. If using a charcoal grill, clean and lightly oil the grate where the food will be placed to prevent sticking. Open vents on bottom of grill, then light charcoal. Charcoal fire is medium-hot when you can hold your hand 5 inches above rack for 3 to 4 seconds. If using a gas grill, clean and lightly oil the grate where the food will be placed. Preheat burners on moderately high, cover for 10

minutes, and then reduce heat to moderate.

2. Wash portabella mushrooms in cold water.

Gently rinse gills on underside of the mushroom. Cut off end of stem to remove any dried or hardened section. Let mushrooms drain, gill side down, for 1 minute.

3. Rub or brush olive oil onto the tops of the mushrooms (the round caps, not the gills), onions, eggplants, peppers and celery stalks, and sprinkle with salt and pepper.

4. Place mushrooms, onions, eggplants, peppers and celery on the hot grill rack. Cover grill and cook vegetables 8 to 10 minutes or until tender and lightly browned, turning over once and transferring to plate as they are done. Cool slightly until easy to handle.

5. In large bowl, mix vinegar, oil, sugar and pepper until blended. Cut mushrooms, eggplants, peppers and celery into 3/4inch chunks; coarsely chop onions. Place vegetables in bowl with the dressing. Add tomatoes, olives, raisins, capers and parsley or basil. Gently toss ingredients and dressing until well-combined. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A friend of mine told me that annual vaccinations for my cat and two dogs were unnecessary and a total scam. He said I only have to vaccinate them every three years and that veterinarians are just part of a big racket. What do you think? -- Janine H., Knoxville, Tenn.

DEAR JANINE: I think you should talk to your pets’ veterinarian before making a decision that could nega-

tively affect their health, and maybe yours.

Vaccinations don’t just protect pets against rabies. They also receive vaccinations, particularly as puppies and kittens, for distemper, feline leukemia, parvovirus and a number of other serious and potentially fatal diseases.

There are diseases that can also pass between pets and humans, and vaccinations can prevent them.

“Pets can easily contract Giardia and Leptospirosis from standing water or damp grass,” said Dr. Meg Connelly of the Willard Veterinary Clinic in Quincy, Mass. “Many dogs love swimming in water, sniffing around in the mud or rolling in the wet grass.

Unfortunately, without immunization protection, these pets are at risk for contracting a serious or even fatal illness that can easily be spread to humans.”

Keeping shots up to date is one of the best ways to prevent both your pets and you from becoming ill. And even

though they seem pricey up front, they are nothing compared to the cost of medical care if a pet should become ill from a disease it could have been vaccinated against.

Again, talk to your pets’ vet about which shots they need regularly and when they need to get them. If cost is a factor, many cities and towns sponsor low- or no-cost vaccination clinics that will get pets up to date with their shots for a reasonable price.

• On June 11, 1509, King Henry VIII of England marries Catherine of Aragon, the first of six wives he will have in his lifetime. When Catherine failed to produce a male heir, Henry divorced her against the will of the Roman Catholic Church.

• On June 17, 1972, five of President Richard Nixon’s re-election employees are arrested for burglary in the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Complex in Washington, D.C. An investigation unveiled a scheme of political sabotage and espionage designed to discredit Democratic candidates. Equipment used during the burglary had been borrowed from the CIA.
