Family gathering

Family traditions start with a shared love of something special, and The Gathering has become an important tradition for Eileen McGlynn of Pincher Creek and her family. When asked, Eileen couldn’t remember offhand how many years she’s been head of the committee, and her granddaughter Alyssa Barbero couldn’t remember how long she’s been singing at the event! It just goes to show how time flies when you’re having fun doing something you love. Best wishes to Eileen as she passes on the reins after another successful show.

My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin Four years ago, I made my first visit to southern Alberta in a capacity which was more than just passing through. I was here on a first date with a fellow named Dennis, who is now my husband. He wanted to introduce me to the area he loved and called home.

We spent time at Waterton, where I marvelled at the beauty of the mountains that can’t be truly appreciated when you’re passing through in a vehicle on Highway 3. It was easy to get hooked on such a fantastic place!

We also stopped in at the cowboy poetry event held in Pincher Creek that weekend. We didn’t stay long as it was in between sets and, with a quick glance around, Dennis didn’t recognize anyone for us to hang out with.

Last week I spent a considerable amount of time at The Gathering and must commend Eileen McGlynn’s committee of 20 and army of volunteers, who put together a fantastic show.

My daughter, Jaiden, was one of the performers. I wasn’t sure what cowboys would think of bagpipes and highland dancing, but discovered quickly that The Gathering is about entertainment of all kinds.

I think we often take the events happening in our own backyards for granted, without finding out what they’re really about. I know many locals who haven’t been to The Gathering because they think it’s something only for the die-hard western set.

The success of The Gathering is shown by the faithful who come back every year and by those who came from as far as Mexico, England, Scotland and Norway. It’s not just a show for cowboys, ranchers and farmers, it’s a gathering of people celebrating everyday life, humour, advice, music and some plain silliness.

Sure, there were cowboys – many of them, in fact. But the audience and the entertainers themselves were very diverse, and the event is about much more than cowboys and poetry.

The content and style of the music, dance and prose varied, there was a wide array of goodies in the mercantile, wagon rides, rodeo fun, pancakes,

cowboy church, auctions, and a well-stocked watering hole. There really was something for everyone.

If you and your spouse ever quibble about who’s boss or how things should be done, you’d have enjoyed the Bibbys’ good-natured banter.

If you’ve ever wondered what your washing machine endures, you would have chuckled as Margaret Wilhelm filled you in on the trials and tribulations of her machine, Scumbucket.

The Divine Bovines sang about situations from the point of view of the cow, and had many fans sporting cow ears during their shows.

Poets like Bj Smith touched on much more than what goes through a rancher’s mind. Their stories made the audience laugh, think and exchange glances when a point hit home.

Singing sensations The Travelling Mabels put on a fantastic show. They found themselves receiving airplay on CKUA after a previous performance at The Gathering, and say this kick-started their career in music.

Performers had the opportunity to learn from each other, and the vets supported those with nervous butterflies. They renewed old friendships and made new ones. The atmosphere was warm, and newcomers were quickly welcomed to the family.

It was a great opportunity for local performers to hone their skills and rub elbows with professionals. Everyone wins when our young people learn how much fun it is to be part of an event like The Gathering and see first-hand how much work it takes to pulloff a successful event.

Alyssa Barbero, Martyna Lively, Jaiden Panchyshyn and the 4-H volunteers will help carry The Gathering forward in the future as they learn from and follow the examples set by our local volunteers.

Eileen is leaving some big boots to fill as she steps down as leader of the group, but it’s awesome to see a new generation confidently planning to be back again for years to come.

The Breeze Mailbox Southern Alberta success Thanks to numerous walkers, sponsors and donors from Pincher Creek and surrounding communities, the recent Purina Walk for Dog Guides – sponsored by Pincher Lions Club, Cowley-Pincher Roaring Lions and Cowley Lions Club – was a resounding success. The clubs raised $13,000 for the Lions Foundation of Canada dog guide program.

Many local businesses and individuals donated their time and funds to make the event a success. In addition, Sobeys and Pincher Creek Co-op donated the food for the barbecue at the walk, and Walmart matched funds donated at the store.

Over $75,000 was raised in southern Alberta, which all goes toward training dog guides for Canadians with disabilities. This total exceeded the amount raised by the Toronto area.

The money is used to train five types of dog guides: canine vision, hearing ear, special skills, seizure response and autism assistance.

Each dog guide costs approximately $20,000 to raise and train, and then is given to a qualified applicant at no cost. The dogs are trained in Oakville, Ont. by the Lions Foundation.

At present there are 11 service dogs in southern Alberta. The annual walk, which takes place in over 200 communities across Canada, allows the foundation to continue its quest to provide these dogs to individuals who will benefit from the program. By participating in the walk and donating funds, generous community members ensure this worthwhile project is carried on from year to year.

Mustangs looking for a new field The Pincher Creek Mustangs have submitted a proposal for consideration in the Celebration Tour sponsored by Kraft and TSN. From over 400 applicants, two will be chosen to represent each province, and 10 finalists will each receive $25,000 toward their community project.

Tom Holoboff, head coach of the peewee Mustangs football team has taken the initiative to apply to the contest on behalf of the Mustangs organization.

If they make it to the voting stage, the team will need support from all their Internet-savvy fans to help them earn a prize, which would see a new football field, complete with lights, developed at Juan Teran Park.

“The current field is in poor condition, and the last game of the 2011 season was cut short because we ran out of daylight,” Tom says.

Over 80 kids enjoyed the efforts of the community club last year.

Bantam coach Dan Crawford says that operating costs were $36,000 last year. With each player paying only $200, that leaves a lot of fundraising to do. Last year helmets needed to be replaced, and the club is thankful for the support from local service clubs and businesses that help out each year.

The group is always actively fundraising, with recent activities being a very successful jail and bail and a dunk tank.

It was another production and another success, thanks to the people who have supported the Windy Hollow Players theatre group. Too Many Cooks, by Marcia Kash and Douglas E. Hughes, was a witty comedy that tickled the audience as they openly laughed throughout the two acts. Friday and Saturday was a full house with a delicious meal served by Simply Catering, Barry and Sophie Carney.

The actors were never far from their scripts as they prepared for the play. Learning lines, where to stand, how to handle the props kept the actors involved as they prepared for the shows.

This year they planned a matinee on Sunday afternoon, with homemade pies as the treat. Unfortunately, one of the actors fell ill and it was necessary to cancel the remainder of the performance.

The people in attendance are to be commended for the care and concern that was shown toward Ed Lindsell, who played the part of Pop Bubbalowe. Phone calls, and people stopping on the street to ask how he was doing, kept the rest of the group busy, but it was a pleasant feeling to see how people cared. Even now, calls are still coming in to express good wishes for a steady recovery.

Ed is doing well and looking forward to getting back to his career as a talented actor.

Sincere accolades to all of the people who attended the show from Pincher Creek and the surrounding communities.

Your participation and support of the group is truly appreciated. As new scripts come our way and we plan for future shows, we will always remember the positive way the communities have shown their support. We haven’t put our Too Many Cooks scripts away yet, and we will let you know what develops.

Teck lends a hand in the kitchen

By Shannon Robin As with any organization, members of the Blairmore Legion do a substantial amount of fundraising to keep themselves afloat and cover their operating costs.

“Most people don’t realize that we’re a non-profit organization and that we have to cover all of our operations costs and building expenses from the profits of our bar sales and steak nights,” says first vice-president Kathy Lang.

The organization is always looking for new ideas, and implementation of the Crowsnest Idol competition was one of Kathy’s ideas to help raise money for the Legion.

Another was to approach Teck directly and ask for help with kitchen upgrades. In January, Kathy sent an email to Tammy Ogden, Teck Coal’s community liaison, requesting assistance in the amount of $50,000.

Teck had recently committed to major sponsorship of Crowsnest Idol and is well-known for its support of community projects, so Kathy knew she had nothing to lose in asking.

She was disappointed when Teck declined to donate, but the tradition of Friday steak nights carried on.

The kitchen is only open one night a week, and the proceeds of the Friday dinners are crucial to covering operating expenses for the Legion.

Kathy touched base with Teck again, and was told the company was willing to help with the cost incurred in the fire suppressant incident. Since this amount was already covered by insurance, Kathy gratefully declined.

Kathy and Tammy stayed in touch through weekly updates over the course of the Idol competition.

“About a week after Idol, I found out we would be receiving the full amount of our kitchen request,” Kathy says. “The request had been declined, so this came out of the blue.”

“I was so stunned, and couldn’t believe it,” she says. “It’s an astounding amount of money!”

While she wants to keep the renovation details under wraps for now, Kathy has been busy sourcing equipment and local installers.

She hopes to unveil the new kitchen in the second half of July. Until then, no one gets to peek.

The Friday steak night tradition, started by Brian Kakoske about 20 years ago, will resume in September and the volunteer cooks are sure to be thrilled with the surprise that awaits them.

During the summer months, the lounge will remain open and special bookings are available for the club room.

The Legion also has a deck and a fenced-in yard where you can enjoy games of horseshoes or bocce.

Bev Magli, front, and Sandra Radford were busy in the kitchen at the Blairmore Legion Friday night. They are among a group of volunteers who share their cooking skills for the weekly Friday night dinners. The kitchen will be closed now until late July for a facelift, courtesy of a huge donation from Teck Coal. Upgrades will include new equipment and more working space.

Alta., at the age of 80 years.

Margaret was born on April 8, 1932, to proud parents Edward and Esther Moe in Weyburn, Sask., growing up with sister Annie and brothers Harry and James. She was raised with a strong work ethic, dedicated faith and devotion for family. She married Norman Ross and was blessed with a family of her own. Her compassionate and nurturing character provided unconditional love for her children. Her beloved Norman died in 1979 and, after deeply mourning his passing, Margaret found love once more and married Douglas Arthur Burns in 1981.

They cherished their extended family of 11 children.

Over the years, she and her family moved to many places in Alberta; she lived some 22 years in Frank, Alta., before moving to a retirement home in Pincher Creek in 2011.

Well-known in the Pass as “the lady who always walked everywhere,” she adored her 23 grandchildren. Typical of her generous nature, she loved all sorts of animals. Similarly, she did a lot for the SPCA, for STARS and for the War Amps. She had many talents, including a “green thumb” – the inside of her home was adorned with a multitude of beautiful plants and flowers. The Blairmore Seniors Centre meant a lot to Margaret, as did the communities of the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek.

She will be sadly missed by her daughters: Frances Lowe of Montana, Ruby Connon of Calgary, Esther Mable (Ken) Stahl of Pincher Creek, Ruth Anne (John) Lafee of Lundbreck, Genealee Marilla Roy of Lethbridge and Katerina Genevieve Burns of Lethbridge; by her sons: Lea (Ursula) Ross of Linden, Alta., Edward Ross of Aldersyde, Alta., Stanley (“Cookie”) Ross of Salmo, B.C. and Charles Peter Ross of Blairmore; by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; by her sister, Annie Gustaw, of Thunder Bay, Ont.; and extended family and friends.

Margaret was predeceased by her husbands, Norman Ross and Douglas Arthur Burns; her daughter Leora Ross; her grandaughters Kristy Lynn Ross and Sylvia Lynn Ross, and her two brothers, Harry and James.

The funeral service was held at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel, 13461 20th Ave., Blairmore, Alta., on Thursday, June 14, 2012, at 1 p.m., with interment following at the Coleman Union Cemetery; Rev. Ernest Marti officiating. The luncheon was graciously hosted at the New Apostolic Church in Blairmore.

Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village in Pincher Creek has been treating students to a variety of experiences all month. Curator Farley Wuth leads the children from their school to the museum, sharing stories about local pioneers and landmarks as they go.

Those paying attention will catch Farley sharing clues they’ll need later when they try their hand at a new board game called Kootenai Brown Goes to Town.

At the museum, students get to try their hand at a variety of activities, including making bannock and roasting it over an open fire.

Checking out the new ducklings and their other animal pals is always a big hit, and general

manager Tracy Glen loves to show her babies off.

On Monday, Canyon School teacher Cody Johnson had the pleasure of watching an idea of his come to life. Last year, he suggested to Jennifer Engen, the museum’s education co-ordinator, that a Monopoly-style game would help cement the kids’ learning, rather than just touring the grounds.

Jennifer took the idea and ran with it.

“Farley was a huge help,” she says of the process of choosing the colourful characters and landmarks, and finding background information and photos for each. Jennifer’s son Karl was also instrumental in teaching his mom to design each square on the computer. “It was a learning experience for both of us,” Jennifer says.

rent and unforeseen expenses like the death of a horse, which will set you back 10 bucks. The prices reflect actual costs from the early 1900s.

“It ties in nicely with the Grade 4 cuirriculum, where we study Alberta and how it has changed,” says Cody.

Students assemble their games and get a shot at testing their knowledge of local history while on their tour. Each student gets to take a copy of the game home to share with their family.

The idea was to keep students engaged in learning during their tours. Every time the game is played, Pincher Creek’s history is remembered and preserved, and maybe the kids will even look to their parents and grandparents to learn more about their home town.

Remembering the Hillcrest miners

By Shannon Robin Imagine the fear and the sick feeling many had in their stomachs as the whistle blew 98 years ago to indicate trouble at the Hillcrest Mine.

Memories of the Frank Slide, 11 years previous, were still fresh as wives and children rushed to the mine site to find out what had happened.

More than one-third of Hillcrest’s townspeople worked at the mine, and everyone was affected by the events of June 19, 1914.

The cause of the blast in the mine was never determined, and 189 of 235 men working that day lost their lives in what is Canada’s worst mining accident.

The lucky ones were those killed instantly.

Most survived the initial explosion but were overcome by noxious gases that filled the tunnels and suffocated as they tried to find their way out.

The Frank Slide Interpretive Centre offered a tour of the town and cemetery on Sunday as a way of keeping the story alive.

Chris Weber shared stories of the miners and their families as he went through the timeline of the explosion and its aftermath.

Coal mining was dangerous, but mines in Crowsnest Pass had a reputation for their level of safety, and a good miner could earn $4 to $5 per

day to provide for his family.

Many families worked together underground, and died together that day. Twists of fate saved one man while another lost his life. Sons, brothers, fathers and grandfathers perished together in the mineshafts.

The old Bennett-Cruikshank Store was the central point where bodies were identified and prepared for burial. Despite ongoing tension between the miners and the police, they worked side-by-side, respectfully carrying out their grisly chore.

The bars were shut down as a means of maintaining order, but one bottle of whiskey at the store where the bodies were reassembled seemed to miraculously keep refilling itself.

Most men were buried in a mass grave at the Hillcrest Cemetery. Few could afford markers for the graves.

In the past five years, plaques for all of the men have been created. This includes those who were buried elsewhere.

It’s a sombre experience to take the time to read all of the plaques and try to imagine so many deaths and the impact the explosion had on the community.

In one of many twists of fate that occurred June 19, 1914, Dan Cullinan wasn’t scheduled to be working at the Hillcrest Mine that morning. He traded shifts with J.D. Redmonson, who had developed a pain in his side, and consequently was one of 189 who lost their lives in the blast that morning.

By Tina Webber By coincidence or fate, I ended up in an animal shelter and came across an adorable reddish-brown shorthaired pup with ears that tried to stand up but just fell forward. I coaxed her to the front of the pen and petted this beautiful animal. She stretched as if waking from a nap and I wondered how she could sleep amidst all the noise. I liked her immediately but, feeling the danger of attraction, pulled myself away and walked the last few steps to the exit.

That night I could not put the events of the day aside, so I mentioned this dog to my son. After much discussion, we agreed to go back the next day. In the back of my mind, I thought she would already be adopted but, much to my surprise, she was still there. Matthew wanted to adopt her.

I recognized the longing in his eyes and so we did. Only after the decision was made did we read her information card to find out she was a purebred pit bull – probably the reason she was still at the shelter.

It was a date I have often looked back on with wonder, because fate took time to intercede that day to bring our paths together. Adopting her is something I never regretted; actually, I felt quite blessed that I did.

We could not agree on a name so Matthew went to bed that night excited, but with the dog still unnamed. After investigating her new surroundings, the dog lay down to sleep in front of the TV, just as a character came on Star Trek Voyageur named Kess, who had cute alien ears.

As I looked from the TV to the dog and back, the ears cinched it. We named her Kess.

I frowned upon it. Tricks could be taught in minutes. She was trained with hand signals, and disapproval was the only discipline she needed.

Kess was my constant companion, helper and devoted friend. I had to put her down at the age of 12 because of a virulent form of cancer. Putting Kess down was an unbearable event. You see, my heart broke that day and I’m not sure it will ever mend.

It is a painful day when you realize you will probably outlive your pet, and you may wonder if the aggravation, teaching, cleaning and walking is worth it all but then think of what you would have missed and the gain far outweighs the pain.

I have known unconditional love, loyalty and devotion. Because of their example, I too love unconditionally, am devoted and a true friend.

When it came time to part with these great souls, many said to just take the dog to the vet, say goodbye and leave. I could not let my dear friends make this journey alone, and stayed so they would not be scared or anxious. I always felt that if the roles were reversed they would have done the same for me. It is never easy to see a loved one pass from this world to the next. In fact, it is one of the most difficult things I have ever done, but being there for them is a decision I have never regretted.

If you have to part with a pet, do not let the sadness of the event overshadow the joy you have shared.

Loving and being loved is never a wasted effort. Those who do not have a pet, think about whether you can take on the responsibility. If you can, the shelters are full of adoptable ones that need a loving home. You may be surprised at what they will add to your life.

Hwy #6 south between Pincher Creek and Waterton

There’s been much speculation on the streets of Waterton as people pass by the locked doors of the downtown opera house.

Next Wednesday you can satisfy your curiousity when the doors open to welcome Sam Baker as the debut performer.

If you’ve heard whispers of it being a Mexican restaurant, that rumour is true, so be sure to arrive in time to enjoy dinner before the show. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the show starting at 8. The venue is open to those 18 and older.

Jeny and Phil Akitt are well known for the excellent cuisine they’ve been dishing up and the friendly atmosphere they’ve been sharing at the Twin Butte General Store since 1999. This small venue also brings in live entertainers of all genres on a regular basis.

Taking over the Waterton Lakes Opera House is an extension of what Jeny and Phil are already doing well. “It’s kind of like a supper club with live music and theatre,” Jeny says of

their new endeavour.

“We’re really proud of the music we put through in Twin Butte,” she says. “The bigger venue will allow us to attract larger names as well as fulfilling our dreams of meeting some of our idols.”

The building maintains the character it was designed with back in 1935. It will seat about 90 and has awesome acoustics.

“We’re moving forward one step at a time,” Jeny says when discussing the possibility of offering family-friendly matinee shows on weekends.

For now, those under 18 can enjoy the homemade bagels and baking while their parents sip on a specialty coffee, or pick up a treat from the ice cream shop.

Sunday afternoon, members of Turtle Mountain Riding Club enjoyed a day with their horses and their dads. Sam Baker playing at Waterton Sam Baker will be the first to set foot on stage at the new Waterton Lakes Opera House, June 27.

Sam is no stranger to Alberta audiences, having played at festivals and smaller venues across the province.

While traveling in the Peruvian city of Cuzco at age 32, Sam Baker took a train ride that would change his life. On a clear, cool morning in the summer of 1986, Sam boarded a passenger train that was blown up minutes later by terrorists.

Initially, seven died. The dead included a German boy and his parents who were sitting with Baker in the car.

Baker survived, but with lasting damage – deafness, a mangled hand, a mangled leg, and brain damage affecting speech and memory. At 55, words are still occasionally unremembered, requiring extensive search. However, during

these searches, he finds other words.

From these other words, he finds other stories. And with these stories come characters from other places and times.

The p r e t t y w o r l d trilogy is its own making. m e r c y (2004) attempts to come to terms with the flash of impact – the quick violence and the eerie post-blast quiet. It was written as a single piece of art attempting to make sense of sudden death and the lottery quality of shrapnel: the death of some and the survival of others. In the interim, while sorting out life and death on the train, other characters appeared – an ironworker, kids playing baseball, an old widower on a beach. Beauty appears and prevails. p r e t t y w o r l d (2007) explores gratitude, obligation and, again, beauty.

It forms itself as a bookend to m e r c y.

Other characters debut: the son of an oil baron, a man in a blue suede cowboy hat, a woman at a swimming pool.

c o t t o n (2009) is the last (and perhaps most difficult) piece of the trilogy. The cost of forgiveness is weighed against the cost of not forgiving. Other characters walk onto the stage: a field hand, a pulp wood logger, a serving girl, a young Mennonite. Once again, beauty is a constant.

Baker’s music is authenticated by experience. Seldom in modern music is the listener able to hear a unique voice with an uncommon story. As told through Sam’s voice himself: “Life is beautiful, difficult, terrible, and transcendent. Each of us is part and parcel of one great community, one great p r e t t y w o r l d that reaches back to a time before recall and reaches forward beyond imagination. We are love. We are hope. We are stories.”

By Steve Becker THE RACE AGAINST TIME Good timing is extremely important in the play of many hands. When declarer has several different things to do, the order in which he does them frequently makes the difference between success and failure.

Consider this deal where West leads a club against four spades. How should South proceed? Let’s say he starts by winning the club with the king and returns a trump. East takes the ace and plays another club. South must now go down one, losing a trick in each suit, since the diamond and heart finesses both lose when they are attempted.

The outcome is surely unlucky, but it can be traced to a wrong choice of plays.

Declarer should not stake his chances on either of the red-suit finesses working when there is a more promising approach available.

When dummy comes down, he should realize that there is more urgent busi-

ness to attend to than tackling trumps at once. An early trump lead gives the defense time to establish a club trick.

Instead, declarer should win the club lead with the king and play the A-10 of hearts, deliberately rejecting the heart finesse in order to establish an immediate heart trick in dummy.

If South plays in this fashion, he winds up losing only a spade, a heart and a diamond, and so makes the contract. West can take his king of hearts and return a club, but South wins with dummy’s ace and discards his remaining club on the queen of hearts.

By attacking hearts first, South wins the crucial race against time. He develops a heart trick before the defense can develop a club trick. If declarer leads the wrong suit at trick two, he loses a vital tempo and goes down one.

In the Tasmanian wilderness, he stays in a run-down old house with a family that also is in search of the supposedly extinct tiger. Deep into the jungle, Dafoe realizes that the shadowy organization that sent a lone gunman across the world to bring back DNA samples from a rare animal could have hidden motives and might even be untrustworthy.

The plot can get as dense as the jungle, making it hard to appreciate what’s going on. Like a real hunting trip, much of the time is spent on getting there, setting up and then waiting. It’s not an intense thrill ride, and the plot can get in the way of the character’s journey. But although “The Hunter” can be hard to get into, it’s not your common fare.

“Treasure Planet” (PG) [Blu-ray] -- This animated Disney advensave

Now on Blu-ray, this science-fiction reimagining of the classic “Treasure Island” story has another chance to wow audiences.

You see, since 2002, attitudes have supposedly changed about pirates, and the movie’s main voice actor, Joseph Gordon Levitt (“Inception” and “500 Days of Summer”), has become more of a rising star. The movie’s combination of hand-drawn and computer-generated animation should hold up pretty well under the light of the Blu-ray.

“God Bless America” (R) -- Frank (Joel Murray) is a bitter, sad, divorced and dying man, and he’s our hero in this film. In his bleakest moment, Frank finds comfort in killing reality television stars and other obnoxious

jerks. Teenage Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr) is just as misanthropic, and admires Frank’s initiative. The two team up for one big road trip and killing spree against the brain-dead denizens of pop culture.

So it’s a dark kind of comedy. The kind of comedy where you’re supposed to laugh when somebody gets killed for being annoying, feel bad about it for a second, then laugh at the next thing. The outrage and indignation behind the script can get a little overbearing. Certainly not for everyone, but worth checking out when you feel like you’ve had enough with the pop culture sideshow.

“Jesus Henry Christ” (PG-13) -- This movie may be too quirky to live.

Wonder-kid Henry James Herman is 10 years old and already wants to go to college. When little Henry starts asking his single mother about the identity of his father, two families are pulled together into a vortex of uncomfortable, cutesy weirdness. Even lovers of the odd and eccentric might find this one to be just too forced.

Plum Buckle Is Easy, Fresh Summer Recipe Bubbling sweet plums in a butter cake, often referred to as a buckle, is a tasty dessert treat to serve this holiday weekend and all summer long. It’s my go-to summer recipe not only because it uses one of my favorite seasonal fruits, the luscious and beautiful plum, but it’s also a piece of cake to make!

Look for ripe plums with your family at a roadside stand or at your local grocery store. While choosing the fruit, show your kids how to gently squeeze each one to find ripe choices. The fruit should give slightly when lightly pressed between your fingers. Young kids will have fun counting up at least five for this recipe, or let them weigh 1 1/2 pounds’ worth. If there are several varieties to choose from, ask if you can taste samples.

When you return home, wash the fruit and gather all the ingredients. While you wait for the butter to come to room temperature, your school-age child may grate the lemon peel, and another may grease and flour the pan while you slice the plums.

Now everything will be ready to go together in a snap.

FRESH & EASY PLUM BUCKLE Cake: 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup (1/2 pound) butter, at room temperature 1 cup sugar 2 large eggs 1 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon peel 1/3 cup milk 4 cups (about 1 1/2 pounds) unpeeled ripe plums, pitted and sliced 1/4 inch thick Topping: 2 tablespoons sugar 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1. Preheat oven to 325 F. 2. Mix together the flour, baking powder, nutmeg and salt in a bowl. Set aside.

3. Beat the butter and 1 cup sugar on high speed until smooth and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in grated lemon peel.

4. Stir half the flour mixture into the butter mixture. Add milk, and gently stir in remaining flour mixture just until the dry

ingredients are moistened and the batter is smooth. Spoon into a buttered and floured 8-inch-square baking pan. Let kids arrange plum slices, slightly overlapping them in rows or concentric circles over the batter.

Sprinkle topping over slices.

5. Bake 45 minutes or until a toothpick or skewer inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool in pan. Slice and serve warm or at room temperature. Top with a flag on each piece for the Fourth of July, or with a candle or trinket for a summer birthday. Serves 10.

Medicines sometimes can both slow the heart and restore a normal rhythm. If a normal rhythm is not achieved, the patient will still do well if the heart beats slowly. That patient, however, must add to his or her treatment a blood thinner like Coumadin to prevent clots and a stroke.

Ways to Control Irregular Heart DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Last fall, my heart started to jump around, and I took it that I had palpitations, although I wasn’t sure what palpitations were. It turns out I had atrial fibrillation. Since then, I have been on many medicines for the atrial fibrillation plus Coumadin, a blood thinner. The Coumadin requires frequent trips to the lab. I have a hard time getting around. I don’t drive. My doctor suggests ablation. What are your thoughts? -- H.M. ANSWER: Atrial fibrillation is in either first or second place when it comes to heart questions. It means the heart beats rapidly and irregularly. The rapid heart pumps less effectively, and the irregular beat promotes the formation of blood clots in the upper heart chambers.

Those clots, or pieces of them, can be carried through the circulation to the brain, where they cause a stroke.

Orange-Endive Ambrosia For a truly authentic ambrosia, don’t skimp on the coconut! It is an essential ingredient for this old-fashioned salad.

1/2 cup coarsely shredded unsweetened coconut 1/4 cup low-fat buttermilk 1 tablespoon sherry vinegar 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil Salt Freshly ground black pepper 4 navel oranges 4 heads Belgian endive 1/2 cup fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves, packed 1. In 12-inch skillet, toast coconut on medium 2 to 4 minutes or until golden, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and cool completely. (Coconut can be kept at room temperature in an airtight container up to 1 day.)

2. In small bowl, with fork, mix buttermilk, vinegar, mustard, oil, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper until well-mixed. (Dressing can be covered and refrigerated up to 1 day.)

3. With knife, cut peel and white pith from oranges and discard. Cut each orange crosswise into 1/4-inch rounds; cut

each round in half and transfer to bowl, keeping some rounds whole if you like.

4. When ready to serve, trim endive. Cut crosswise at an angle into 1-inch pieces; discard core. In large bowl, toss endive and parsley with dressing until coated.

NBC has ordered 13 “Hannibal” episodes for mid-season and cast 46-year-old Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen in the lead role. The Cannes Film Festival jury just handed Mikkelsen top acting honors for “The Hunt,” in which he skillfully played a man faced with public hysteria after being accused of child molestation.

Mikkelsen took on James Bond in 2006’s “Casino Royale,” and was the leader of the King’s Guard in 2010’s “Clash of the Titans.” In August, he films “Thor 2” with Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman and -- what do you know -- Anthony Hopkins! Who better to get Hannibal Lecter tips from than the man who won his Oscar for creating him? We’ll see “Hannibal” long before “Thor 2” is released in November 2013. watering the lawn and garden: place the barrel underneath your home’s downspout. A covered barrel will discourage mosquitoes from taking up residence.

--Build a compost pile to use as your main source of fertilizer and rich soil in the garden.

--Hand-weed the garden if possible.

If you must use chemical weed-killer, use it exactly as directed on the package or bottle.

--Use the right amount of fertilizer recommended for the types of plants in your garden. Too much fertilizer can result in excess runoff into nearby streams or lakes, ecosystems that often are already stressed by lawn chemicals and fertilizers.

--Visit a local co-op, community farm or farmer’s market to get information on organic and environmentally sustainable gardening. Classes or seminars are available in many cities for aspiring organic gardeners.

This summer, why not move over the hamburgers, steaks, brats and hot dogs, and make room for fruits and vegetables? Grilling provides another opportunity to prepare healthy fruits and vegetables in a quick and different way.

Many people think everything tastes better on the grill, which can hold true for fruits and vegetables.

Don’t like eggplant, zucchini or asparagus? Try it grilled! Better yet, why not Moroccan-Style Grilled Vegetables like the recipe below?

Taste is not the only benefit of grilling. Vegetables and fruit cook so quickly on the grill that they retain much of their vitamin and nutrient content.

It is best to have the grill warm, but not as hot as you would for grilling meat. Lightly brush the vegetables with olive oil and put directly on the grill, turning until tender. Try larger hunks, like a half a green pepper, large slices of squash or portabella mushroom caps, which are large enough to sit on the grates without falling through. A grill basket, aluminum foil pan or kabobs also can be used.

If you prefer steamed veggies, wrap the vegetables in aluminum foil with a little olive oil and your favorite marinade or spices. Seal and place on the grill, turning occasionally, for 10 to 12 minutes or until veggies are tender.

Experiment with different spices, marinades and sauces when preparing fruits and vegetables. Don’t be afraid to try out various flavors. Store-bought mixes and marinades can have extra sodium, sugar and calories compared to a specialized homemade version. Balsamic vinegar or other flavored vinegars are great for drizzling over grilled vegetables or using in a marinade.

Let’s not forget about dessert -- fruits on the grill make a sweet treat. Firmer fruits like apples, pears and pineapple are perfect for grilling. Fruits like peaches and mangoes also can be delicious, but need to be monitored more closely to prevent overcooking, which causes them to be mushy. Try cutting a fresh peach in half, removing the pit, brushing lightly with olive oil and grilling for 2 to 3

minutes on each side. Sprinkle with cinnamon and add a dollop of light whipped topping or low-fat frozen yogurt for a yummy treat. In addition, remember to always practice safe grilling techniques and food safety when preparing any food.

The next time you plan to fire up the grill, remember to invite some vegetables and fruits to the party.

Try this flavorful recipe for Moroccan-Style Grilled Vegetables at your next family or holiday gathering!

MOROCCAN-STYLE GRILLED VEGETABLES 12 crimini or button mushrooms, stems removed 3 small Globe or purple eggplants, sliced into rounds, cut lengthwise into quarters, then into slices about 1/2 inch thick 1 zucchini, cut into 1 inch thick rounds 1 yellow squash, cut into 1 inch thick rounds 1/2 large red bell pepper, seeded, cut into chunks 3 fresh pineapples, 1 inch thick rings, cut into quarters 12 asparagus, cut into 3 inch lengths 1/4 small red onion, halved, pieces separated 8 cherry or grape tomatoes Moroccan-Style Marinade: 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon garlic, chopped 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon paprika 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon cayenne 1/4 teaspoon turmeric Juice of 1 lemon Cooking oil spray 1. Preheat grill to medium-high; spray grates with nonstick spray. If using a gas grill, turn off one side; on charcoal grill, push the coals to one side. Soak (16 to 18) 12 inch wooden skewers in water for at least 30 minutes, or use metal skewers, if desired.

2. To make marinade: Using large bowl, mix together parsley, oil, garlic, salt, black pepper, paprika, cumin, cinnamon, ginger, cayenne, turmeric and lemon juice. Mix well to combine.

3. Add vegetables and fruit to marinade in bowl or use a large resealable bag and pour in marinade and add fruit and vegetables. Mix well to coat all the ingredients. Let the ingredients marinate at least 10 minutes and up to 1 hour before skewering.

4. Thread vegetables and pineapple onto soaked skewers. Wrap ends of wooden skewers with foil to prevent burning. Lightly coat both sides of the vegetables with nonstick spray.

5. Using long-handled tongs, moisten a paper towel with cooking oil spray. Lightly coat grill rack with oil-soaked paper towel to prevent sticking. Lay skewers on grate with the vegetables over the hot side, and foil-covered handles over the cooler side.

Grill vegetables, covered, over medium heat, until vegetables are cooked and lightly charred, about 4 minutes. Turn, baste with any remaining marinade, and grill 4 to 5 minutes more, or until vegetables are tender, turning frequently. Confronting a Rude Dog-Park Denizen DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our town has designated a small park near my home as a place where dogs are allowed. It’s not an official dog park, and because it also has a playground at one corner, many of us who visit have agreed that, if children are present, our dogs will be on leashes so as not to cause a problem. We’ve found the best way to allow our dogs to run free is to show up very early, when kids aren’t present. And we pick up

If he doesn’t know that you and other fellow dog-owners have set up unwritten rules on managing the dogs’ conduct, he won’t know about the leash rule you’ve established. Remind him that it’s good manners and common sense to pick up after his dog, particularly in a park where kids run and play. In many communities, it’s a ticketable offense not to pick up after your dog.

If he ignores the request, make it again. Explain that the rules were put

together in order to keep the park open to dogs -- if there are too many complaints, the city could ban pets from the park. If you can’t convince him, your group may have to form a more official club with written rules, in order to negotiate with both the city and boorish dog owners.

• On June 21, 1788, New Hampshire becomes the ninth and last necessary state to ratify the Constitution of the United States, thereby making the document the law of the land. Massachusetts had initially opposed the document as it failed to reserve undelegated powers to the states.

• On June 23, 1902, German automaker Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) first registers “Mercedes” as a brand name. The famous Mercedes symbol, a three-point star, was registered as a trademark in 1909.

• On June 24, 1915, young German fighter pilot Oswald Boelcke makes the first operational flight of the Fokker Eindecker plane. The Fokker was equipped with machine guns that could fire straight ahead through the aircraft’s

propellers. The precise timing of the propeller blades allowed them to avoid being struck by the machine gun bullets.

• On June 18, 1923, the first Checker Cab rolls off the line at the Checker Cab Manufacturing Company in Kalamazoo, Mich. The shipment stood out as a major landmark in the history of the company, which by then employed some 700 people.

• On June 19, 1953, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were convicted of conspiring to pass U.S. atomic secrets to the Soviets, are executed by the electric chair at Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, N.Y. Both refused to admit any wrongdoing and proclaimed their innocence right up to the time of their deaths.

of the international blockbuster “The Da Vinci Code” as well as other best-selling thrillers, is born in New Hampshire.

Brown’s novels are known for involving symbols, conspiracies and secret societies. His first novel, “Digital Fortress,” was published in 1998.

• On June 20, 1980, in a match in Montreal, Roberto Duran out-points “Sugar” Ray Leonard to win the World Boxing Council welterweight title. Yet, five months later in a rematch, with less than 30 seconds left in the eighth round, Duran looked at the referee and famously uttered the words “no mas” or “no more,” giving up.
