A patterned circle of light shone through the high windows of the new arbour at Crowlodge Park in Brocket, as dancers made their way around the inner circle of the powwow last Thursday.

The Youth Council Powwow was part of the grand opening of the arbour, which fell on National Aboriginal Day and drew a huge crowd. Napi Friendship Centre held a dancing demonstration the following day in Pincher Creek. See story on page 10.

My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin The day is almost here. You know, the one the kids wait for all year ... the first day of summer holidays!

I’m sure my daughter, Jaiden, like many others, has been keeping track of the days since, oh, about the last day of Christmas break.

“Forty-three more days,” she’d announce. Then 33, then 26, and then each of the painfully slow ones where the clock’s second hand seemed to drag its way back up to mark the next minute.

Now that day is almost here, and I wonder how long it will be until the tune changes to “I’m bored.”

It never fails to amaze me how quickly the eager anticipation shifts to complete boredom.

I wish Jaiden was free to experience the summers I enjoyed many years ago.

Before the days of everything electronic and what one of my former teachers called the Sesame Street attention span syndrome. Although he was implying that my generation suffered from a lack of creativity and an attachment to the boob tube, we spent far more time outdoors and away from the electronics than our children ever have.

We vanished for hours on end on our bikes, riding down dirt roads and exploring things that surely no one had come across before. I remember finding real arrowheads along with rocks that must certainly have been dinosaur eggs.

Things felt safer then, and I don’t believe anyone gave a thought to my whereabouts unless I missed coming home for a meal, or was more than my usual margin past curfew. I have always lived dangerously close to my deadlines!

We didn’t have cellphones, but if we needed something, a kindly neighbour or stranger could always be counted on to help out.

Summer was a time of friendship and making memories.

My very best summer memories revolve around Grandpa’s cabin at Candle Lake. Even when the neighbours began spoiling themselves with luxuries such as telephones, cable TV and even running water, that didn’t happen at the Hart place.

I’m glad it didn’t. All these years later, very little has changed at the cabin. I have a lifetime of memories of adventures, sunsets and thunderstorms that will never be surpassed, and am glad to share many of them with my daughter.

She managed to get bored at the lake, too, but not as easily as at other places.

This summer the cabin will likely be up for sale, and it will be the last time to let the sand run between our toes on Grandpa’s beach.

That will be a bittersweet memory to create. I hope it pushes us to find places here to create similar memories, on a day when my whole family chooses to leave our electronics at home.

The Breeze Mailbox Town of Pincher Creek staff show spirit The Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce recently presented the Spirit of The Gathering Award to the staff at the Pincher Creek town office.

The award is presented to the business or community organization that decorates or transforms its premises to best represent the cowboy poetry theme.

In recognition of their efforts, the town office staff received a trophy and a pair of tickets to The Gathering, held in Pincher Creek two weeks ago.

“It was a difficult choice, as everyone did a wonderful job with decorating their buildings,” said chamber administrator Lieve Parisis.

Town employees were dressed in western gear, and the panel of judges was met

by Gord Pitt reciting an original poem to banjo accompaniment.

“They really went all out, and all three judges agreed that they had captured the spirit of The Gathering the best,” Lieve said. The judges also appreciated the efforts of the other contestants.

Students showed off their squaredancing skills at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village, and poetry was recited at RBC and Whispering Winds. The Ramada Inn, Pincher Creek Credit Union and Ruffles Boutique also put on impressive displays.

Service, sacrifice and family

By Shannon Robin Joyce Setters of Calgary didn’t know her father, but she spent Father’s Day weekend this year celebrating his life with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Forty-six members of Andrew Bower’s family gathered to honour his memory, his life, his service and his sacrifice as a commemorative plaque was dedicated to him at Waterton Lakes National Park.

Joyce’s mother, Mary, was pregnant when Andrew died.

“In those years nobody talked about it,” she says. “And I never asked Mom about him.”

At 86, Joyce has a lively twinkle in her eye and a keen memory. Her great-greatnieces and nephews were drawn to her, and she was loving every minute of the party in her father’s honour.

She relates the difficulties of being the only kid in town (the family was raised in Pincher Creek) without a father, but notes that all changed when fathers left and not all returned from the Second World War. “There was a big picture of my father in the bedroom,” Joyce recalls. “I used to stand under the picture and ask God to let him come down so I could at least meet him.”

She was fortunate to have her grandfather, Daniel Dunlop of Frank, as a strong man in her life.

Although life was tough, Joyce has many happy memories, such as going out to Waterton every Sunday and eating fried chicken and potatoes in the shelter.

“The boys were working at 17 because Mother only got $30 a month for them until they were 16,” Joyce says. “Mary was a nurse, Cathy was a teacher and Dora was a telephone operator before joining the army.”

“Me, I didn’t do anything,” she adds with a giggle.

“I love the rock they found to put the plaque on,” Joyce shares after pronouncing the day to be “delightful.”

Jamie Tudge is the one largely responsible for making the delightful day happen.

When retirement came around for the Vancouver fire chief, he knew the direc-

tion he needed to head – he wanted to know who his grandfather was.

Jamie’s mother, Dora, had already been researching and trying to learn more about her father from documents she had attained. She was Jamie’s inspiration and it’s most unfortunate she passed away without witnessing the celebrations of Andrew Bower’s life and work.

On June 16, 46 members of Andrew Bower’s family gathered at Waterton Lakes National Park to pay tribute to a man they never had the pleasure to meet. A plaque celebrating his life and service was unveiled at the lookout over Knight’s Lake. The plaque reads: “In Commemoration of Andrew Bower, the first Parks Canada Warden to lose his life in the line of duty. He died in Waterton Lakes National Park, not far from this location, in a horse accident on June 6, 1925. Andrew Bower served with the Northwest Mounted Police from 1907 to 1916 and enlisted, fought and was wounded in World War I. He joined the warden service in 1918. This plaque is dedicated to Andrew Bower and to the men and women like him who, for Canadians, have served and sacrificed to protect, maintain and present the national parks, national historic sites and marine conservation areas which form Canada’s national park system.”

Five years ago, Jamie commissioned Jim McGregor to write a poem about Andrew’s life, based on the box of files and photos he had collected. He was thrilled with the resulting work, reprinted on this page.

Jamie worked with retired warden Rob Watt and Parks Canada staff to put together the puzzle pieces of his grandfather’s life. He was impressed that visitor experience manager Locke Marshall accepted his ideas and suggestions. Shelly Mercer is credited with designing the plaque, based on Jamie’s ideas.

“It was a privilege and an honour to be the one to get this all set up. Parks staff were extremely helpful in getting it all put through,” Jamie says of the dedication. “I really feel it’s done a lot to help the park warden service out as far as their morale goes – they’ve had some really cruel cuts in the last few years.”

Once wheels were in motion for the monument, Jamie’s extended family started getting excited. “It mushroomed, and suddenly the whole family wanted to take part,” he says.

Jamie describes the day as “absolutely phenomenal.” How could a day when 46 family members from across Canada and as far away as Germany measure up to be anything less. There were cousins who met for the first time, and children of theirs who had an opportunity to meet and build relationships.

“It was great to do this while my aunt was still alive,” he says. “I only wish more of our parents had been around to see this.”

A special highlight of Jamie’s visit was having Edwin Knox take him down to the Belly River headquarters where Andrew worked.

Andrew’s family haven’t all left the Pincher Creek-Waterton area, and Joyce is proud of her nephew Michael, who “works in the mountains just like his grandpa.”

An official ceremony was hosted by Parks Canada June 16 prior to the unveiling of the plaque.

An honour guard, led by bagpiper Margaret Hanna, included members of the Royal Canadian Legion, RCMP and Parks Canada. Each group represented a segment of Andrew Bower’s life or career.

Andrew was brought to life.

He moved to Canada from Scotland at the age of 18, and didn’t ever make a trip back or see his family again.

By the age of 25, Andrew was one of the youngest members of the Royal North West Mounted Police to earn the rank of sergeant.

When the First World War began, Andrew anxiously awaited his opportunity to serve overseas. Due to his rank with the RNWMP, Andrew wasn’t assigned to the front lines. Insistent on doing his part, he voluntarily reverted ranks to be sent to the trenches.

He was wounded in action at Lens, France on July 17, 1917.

The following January, Andrew was appointed fire and game warden for Dominion Parks at Waterton. He both loved and respected nature and was credited for carrying on the work of Kootenai Brown.

His letters indicate he was a welleducated man, and he was known to be an excellent horseman.

Andrew left Belly River headquarters on horseback June 3, 1925 for the Waterton townsite, but didn’t arrive. He was found about 30 hours later, lying unconscious in the sleet and snow that had been falling for hours.

It appeared he had been bucked from his horse and sustained a head injury.

He died June 6 at the Cardston hospital without regaining consciousness. The circumstances of his death will always hold an air of mystery.

Both RCMP and park officials determined Andrew’s death to be one of those “unavoidable freak accidents that happen in life,” records show, although suspicions of foul play still linger gently, 87 years later.

There were few dry eyes in the house as Lindsey Sheen played Taps.

Guests at the official ceremony included family members, Parks Canada staff and officials, friends and curious strangers. A special guest was Frances Riviere. Her great uncle, George Gladstone, was a member of the party that searched for Andrew.

Many of Andrew’s family have chosen professions in public service. Their family was brought together by history, and Andrew’s descendents will continue to make their own.

In recognition of his service to Canada, Andrew’s name has also been engraved on the Peace Officer’s Memorial on Parliament Hill, and he is a member of the Alberta Police and Peace Officer’s Memorial Honour Roll.

From Ft. Macleod to Crowsnest Pass, From Pincher Creek to Banff and west, He took control of the Alberta patrol, Strict, and equal to each test.

His duty called to the First Great War, Where, near the French town of Lens, A German bullet pierced his arm, And they sent him home again.

The west and mountains called him back, A new life waiting to begin, To protect the land he loved so dear, The Dominion Parks Branch swore him in.

From Waterton to the Kootenays Each poacher quickly found, Like mountain lions and grizzlies, The Warden brought them down.

Building trails and stocking rivers, Teaching, training, was his life; A protector and provider, For his children and his wife.

The men like Warden Bower Are the men with honest hands Who left their legacy for all to see, Our country’s parks and forest lands.

He lay quiet neath the falling snow, He smiled and closed his eyes, Now he protects us all from his final post, That park in the heavenly skies.

Hiking Waterton

Whether you’re a novice or an expert hiker, it’s always a smart idea to have a trustworthy guide in hand before you head out on the trail.

Based on her lifetime of hiking and running, and a love of the outdoors, Blandine Baritaud’s Hiking Waterton Lakes National Park is just such a resource.

The informative guide is packed with information about the park itself, safety and practicalities, and the park’s trails, complete with maps and photos.

Blandine has worked with Parks Canada for over 20 years and this is her fifth summer at Waterton Lakes National Park. She has been fortunate to spend most of those years in mountain parks, where she can usually be found in the visitor information centre.

“I don’t think I can function outside of the mountains,” she says. “It’s not me!” Blandine spends six or seven months a year at Waterton, and during the off-season competes in marathons throughout the United States and travels for fun.

In her book, more than 40 trails are divided into six categories: 30-minute to two-hour hikes (good for families with small children), two- to three-hour hikes (good for families with older children), day hikes, backpacking (overnight) trips, hikes close to the U.S. border, and bike-hike combinations.

Tips for beginners include what to expect by way of weather in the mountains, trail conditions, and wildlife.

Safety and etiquette directions are also given, along with suggestions for proper clothing, food and drink.

For inexperienced hikers who want to see beautiful wildflowers, lovely scenery and running water, without a steep incline, she suggests the Red Rock Canyon Loop or Blakiston Falls.

If you’re after a combination of the most challenging and the most spectacular, Blandine recommends the CarthewAlderson day trip. She calls this “the best hike in the sky,” and you’ll be able to see seven lakes, two countries and two national parks.

Individual trail information includes length, time, elevation gain and special features. These features took the longest to compile and verify, as she wanted to have the distances and elevations available in both metric and imperial units.

“The trails themselves were already in my head, but the historical aspects and translation of the distances took long,” she says, when speaking about how long it took to compile the information and create a user-friendly format. “Between July and October it was pretty much done.”

Blandine will be available at Tamarack Outdoor Outfitters in Waterton at 4 p.m. Friday, to sign copies of her book and share hiking advice and suggestions with all who are interested.

Roome-inations

By Shannon Robin You may have seen Ken Roome at his roadside office – it’s usually parked along Highway 3, near the Frank Slide, during the summer months.

You may even have stopped to visit with him, and if that’s the case, you know he can spin a good story.

Ken also pens poetry, and always has a book on hand to share.

Roome-inations – Poems of the Pass and Beyond is now in its fourth printing, and Ken’s prose has found its way to countries around the world in the hands of tourists returning from southwestern Alberta.

For the past two summers, Ken has been out on the road, directing tourists from his mobile office to whatever they’re seeking, while at the same time offering them his view of the Pass in rhyme.

“It’s nice to meet people from literally all over the world,” he says of his novel means of sharing his literature.

“Most stop to ask where the nearest restaurant or liquor store can be found,” Ken says.

“Many people also ask how the slide managed to miss the highway,” he adds with a chuckle.

There are neat experiences as well, like meeting a little boy from Georgia who wanted to break rocks and look for dinosaurs after Ken showed him some fossils. You don’t get experiences like that working behind a desk.

Ken’s first poem, After Having Won, was written in about 15 minutes, after Ken won his first golf tournament. Not a word has been revised. Pretty impressive for a first draft of a first poem!

Ken writes about all kinds of things and says, “It’s easier to write when I’m emotional about stuff.” If you tick him off, his pen will fly, but he hates the pressure of deadlines.

Roome-inations relates stories of local lore and landmarks through the first 15 poems, while the last 50 pages seemingly cover every topic imaginable.

The imagery is vivid, and many poems are historically accurate stories with fictional characters adding colour.

Ken’s personal favourites are The Painter and Devil’s Night, which he started with a borrowed pen and piece of paper while having dinner at Earl’s in Lethbridge one evening.

Boy to Man is a special poem which Ken hopes to see made into a movie one day.

Ken has given framed copies of his poem Books to libraries and schools in the area and as far as Lethbridge. “I hope to get kids reading and using their own minds and imagination,” he says. “The three Rs are way too important to lose to computers and it’s getting so that kids can’t picture anything on their own.”

One of Ken’s other passions is golf, and he also has an instruction book in circulation, titled Roome Fore Improvement. He’s currently updating the book, so beginner golfers can look forward to a new edition in the near future.

If you’ve only met Ken at the side of the road or at one of his other jobs around the Crowsnest Pass area, you might not know that he’s also a professional golfer and instructor. He shared the number of tournament wins he has earned in his career, but you’ll have to ask him about that yourself, as it turns out he’s a modest fellow.

“It’s hard to make a living from golf alone, so I’ve had a million different jobs, mostly in the area,” he says. Ken also likes to hunt and fish and says he’s still working on growing up.

Grown up or not, some would agree with his picture of a perfect day in the Pass – golfing in the morning, fishing in the afternoon and getting home in time to cook supper for his wife. He says the faster you live your life, the faster it’s over.

If you’d like to pick up a copy of either of Ken’s books you’ll have to do it an old-fashioned way, like looking in the white pages and picking up your telephone. Or, if you’re out for a cruise, keep your eyes open for the information sign at the side of the road.

Roadside Crosses Who carries the pain of those losses?

My miles driven marked by roadside crosses.

Some monuments with flowers well tended, Others leaning, fade gray, just a life ended.

Where do these crosses come from?

Two kids hurrying home after prom?

Buddies drinking after a game, Their passing marked by a cross – a name?

A lover rushing to a rendezvous?

Somewhere someone still waits for you.

In south east BC there is a hill, Studded with crosses, added to still.

Truckers hauling logs or freight Where a deadly curve lay in wait.

I pass roadside crosses everywhere When I pass I tend to drive with care.

The other day, curious, I stopped by a cross Read the words that explained this loss.

They brought a tear to my eye.

“Never drive faster than your guardian angel can fly” Just a few miles from this sign There was an accident, still in my mind.

For Gordie, no roadside cross is there, His cross is the one I bear.

Laurel Francis is getting excited – Fibre Arts Week is her project, and it’s coming soon to Pincher Creek!

“I love to share my joy of creating,” Laurel says enthusiastically. “There’s such a sense of accomplishment that comes from doing the ladies’ arts.”

The event will be held at Bloomin’ Inn, and features local, national and international instructors sharing their expertise in knitting, rug hooking, applique, acid dyeing and embroidery. There will also be a vendors market open daily to the public Though each can stand alone, the classes all intermingle. For example, wool or embroidery thread dyed in the first class can be used in projects for the rest of the week.

Class prices are as low as $5 and participants can register in one class or a full week’s worth of fun and education.

Evening classes are offered for those who might not be able to take time off work, and as a bonus, those registered in the day classes can attend the evening sessions for no cost.

If you are a quilter then you have the chance to win $350 toward next year’s classes. Time is tight though – your four-colour quilt needs to be registered by June 30.

The top entry will be chosen by a certified judge.

“This is a bonus in itself,” Laurel explains. “Whether you win or not you’ll get wonderful input on your project.”

Laurel’s interest in quilting was piqued when she saw little handmade quilts in her grandmother’s attic. Her mom hadn’t learned to quilt, so Laurel taught herself from a magazine pattern. Now she designs quilts and patterns and rug hooking designs through her business, Shaggy Dog Designs. Her products have found homes across the country and around the world.

Laurel has created an opportunity for fibre arts enthusiasts of all levels to find a full range of exciting workshops. “This is for anyone with an interest in any kind of crafting,” she says. “I’m always listening and will bring in Chinese bunka if that’s what they want!”

Riding the Crowsnest trails

Matt Henning has been busy this month showing kids some of the area mountain bike trails.

“Not all of them are easy to find, even with directions, so I thought it would be great to take them out and get some of them more into mountain biking,” Matt says. “It’s awesome to see them getting into it so much!”

Nine kids have participated in three group rides which have taken them on the Powder Keg Trails, Good Riddance, School of Rock, The Whistling Post, and the Frank Slide Trail.

The last youth group ride is tonight. All riders must be members of UROC, which costs $5 for youth 17 and under, and must have a helmet.

For adults interested, there are women’s group rides on Tuesdays, and open group rides on Thursdays throughout the summer months.

By Tina Webber On July 1, 1867, Canada became a self-governing dominion of Great Britain, and a federation of four provinces: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario and Quebec. The anniversary of this date was called Dominion Day until 1982. Since 1983, July 1 has been officially known as Canada Day. I ask myself what Canada Day means to Canadians and, further, what is a Canadian? I have lived here since 1972, when I moved from the United States – California, to be exact. Growing up American, we were taught that the U.S. was the centre of the world, if not the universe. I could find Canada on a map but that was the limit of my knowledge of the country I would call home.

I remember the drive to Calgary across the Rocky Mountains, where hours would pass without seeing any city lights. In the dark, the landscape looked desolate and the moonlit sky much too big. After hours of driving on the Trans Canada, we pulled in at a gas station east of Banff to ask if we had passed Calgary. We were worried we would pass it by and the attendant had to assure us we would not. Upon seeing the California licence plates, with a wry smile he said, “Just continue over the next hill and you should see the city’s lights.”

After cresting the next hill the city’s lights came into view and seemed to stretch from horizon to horizon. I look back and think how often the attendant must have repeated that story to gales of laughter.

I had other preconceptions of Canada, fed by misconception. The year before, my mother

had taken a parcel to the post office to be mailed to Calgary for Christmas, and asked if it would get there before the holiday. The postmaster responded, “Three days to the border,” and after that he could not guarantee it would arrive in time because it would be taken by dogsled to Calgary from there. (True story.)

I was also under the impression that Canadians still used horses instead of cars. I loved riding so I was thrilled to “know” this, and sadly disappointed when I found out it was not true.

We settled in Calgary and I was educated in Canadian schools to understand that the U.S. was not the centre of the universe, just one part of our world.

One thing I immediately noticed was the kindness and generosity of Canadians – a stranger saying hello to you while walking by, or a car stuck in the snow being pushed out by fellow motorists. People were friendly and unassuming, and I immediately felt comfortable and at home.

I long wondered if I could call myself American or Canadian until I realized that in my heart I have always been Canadian; the paperwork just hasn’t been done.

Although Canadians are separated by vast geographical, language and political views, I have found a common bond connecting the whole country. You see, a true Canadian complains about the weather being too cold, wet or hot. Although in my heart I feel Canadian, it is when I join in on these complaints that I truly feel it. (And aren’t you tired of the rain?)

Colourful dancing highlights arbour opening

By Brenda Shenton National Aboriginal Day was celebrated last Thursday in Brocket, with the grand opening of the magnificent new arbour in Crowlodge Park.

A colourful addition to the celebration was the Piikani Youth Council Powwow, which drew over 350 off-reserve participants.

The new arbour is a 2,200-square-foot round structure, with an artificial turf floor.

Building of the structure began in April 2011, with construction and design spearheaded

by Peigan Employment Services and their manager, James Strikes With A Gun. It was designed in a circle to celebrate “the circle of life,” says James.

The cost of labour and materials to create the unique community legacy was $1.5 million, he says. Fifteen community members were trained as carpenters and welders, primarily through hands-on instruction.

The building is a testament to the creativity and skills of the Peigan people.

“The completion of this project brings pride to our young people,” James says.

Events began with a good-humoured Piikani Nation staff dance contest, where the women outnumbered the men four to

one. The announcer, after splitting them into groups by gender, said, “This is the reason we (men) never have any say.”

The grand entry was led by Fabian Bad Eagle of the Piikani Nation, dressed in his late grandfather Eddy Bad Eagle’s outfit and proudly carrying Eddy’s eagle staff.

Following behind were dignitaries and children of all ages. The grand entry was a beautiful display of family, colours and music.

Children celebrated and danced, circling in time to the drummers as they carried the song beat throughout the building. All ages were part of the opening celebrations, and those too young to walk were carried by their parents and grandparents.

Leanne Van Loon, youth outreach coordinator and Piikani Youth Council leader, was very pleased with the participation. She says dancers came from across the province, from Montana and from as far away as Arizona.

Leanne says another important part of the day’s celebration was the teepee set up outside the arbour by Piikani Child and Family Services. Visitors could get an introduction to traditional games and also to the different types of dances.

Youth council members helped with the game instruction as one of their many community volunteer activities.

The youth council partners regularly with elders who teach them the value of community and “how it is important to give back to their community,” says Leanne.

Organizing and helping with the powwow is a prime example of “giving back to the community and teaching our culture and the beauty of the culture to others,” she says.

The Piikani Youth Council, now in its fifth year, was formed to help demonstrate leadership, empower youth within their community and to learn and promote their culture.

After raising $6,000 with the help of local business and anonymous donors, the group was able to move forward with the planning and execution for the day’s events.

“That’s what makes your community – when volunteers pull together,” Leanne says.

Over 700 people attended the powwow over the course of the day, she says. Plans for next year’s youth powwow include a talent show to expand their outreach into neighbouring communities.

It is possible to play a hand correctly and get a bad result, and to play the same hand incorrectly and get a good result.

Consider the accompanying deal from a European championship match between Norway and France.

At the first table, with a Norwegian pair North-South, six spades was reached on the bidding sequence shown. West led the king of diamonds, and declarer breezed through the play to bring in the slam with an overtrick for a score of 1,460 points. He won the diamond lead with the ace, finessed the jack of spades at trick two, led another spade and collected the rest of the tricks without even breathing hard.

At the second table, with France NorthSouth this time, the same contract was reached, and again the opening lead was a diamond. But at this table the French

declarer played the hand more scientifically and went down as a result.

After taking the diamond with the ace, he was unwilling to settle for a mere 50 percent chance of making the contract by relying exclusively on a trump finesse.

Instead he decided to play the A-K-Q of hearts in the hope that the opposing hearts were divided 3-3 (a 36 percent chance), in which case he could discard his diamond loser on the third round of hearts.

He also had the added chance that even if the hearts broke 4-2, he could still fall back on the trump finesse. All factors considered, this gave him about a 2-to-1 chance to make the slam.

Unfortunately, West ruffed the second heart lead and cashed the queen of diamonds, and South went down one.

That “dark danger” is what makes Weaver so much fun for Will to play, as well as letting viewers catch a glimpse of his softer side. Will told me: “It’s very interesting when you think about what it would be like to have to command in a situation like this. What is it you would have to do is maybe not what you would think, and being fair is not necessarily what we would normally think it would be.

“I think it requires not allowing people to see certain things about you.

Too bad they’re not teenagers, it’s not the ‘90s, and since there has been a steady stream of “American Pie” sequels and spin offs, it’s hard to celebrate the return of the original cast. Jim (Jason Biggs), Oz (Chris Klein) and the foul Stifler (Sean William Scott) meet up with their old high-school chums for a high-school reunion and ceremonial rehashing of tired comedy material.

The raunchy humor that’s been the staple of the franchise also makes a return, but to hit-or-miss results.

Sometimes Stifler says something vile in just the right way to be funny.

Most other items of raunchy humor are less funny and more uncomfortable or disappointingly predictable.

“Quill: The Life of a Guide Dog” -- This Japanese import follows a yellow labrador from his puppy days save

to adulthood as a guide dog for the blind. It’s in live action, and the dog does not talk. Quill is selected from his litter for training because as a puppy, he didn’t come when his master called -- a sign of a good candidate. While it’s a fictional drama, the movie is surprisingly informative.

Quill is eventually matched up with a blind man who is not keen on being led around by a dog. Quill has to demonstrate the patience of his training along with the more loveable dog traits to show his owner that he can be trusted. It may be a bit slow for many kids, but youngsters who are passionate about animals and can keep up with the subtitles will be glued to the screen.

‘Ectoplasmic Ick’ Will Baffle Kids A friend of mine is an amazing magician who loves to play tricks on the kids in the neighborhood. One afternoon, I noticed there was a crowd gathered around him watching with great anticipation a magic trick being performed. I arrived just in time to witness his grand finale: pulling a bouquet of flowers out of thin air.

The surprise on the kids’ faces -- and mine -- was a sight to behold.

Here’s another wonderful surprise, and a bit of magic your kids won’t want to miss. It’s a natural transformation that leads to the most peculiar result. This slithery goop appears to be solid one moment, only to ooze out between your fingers, over your wrist and down your arm seconds later.

Once you make this concoction, let the school-age kids in your home or at your summer birthday party play with it. Then have a contest to give it a name. For starters, how about “Sublime Slime” or, our favorite, “Ectoplasmic Ick”!

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: From the minute I get out of bed, I have attacks of dizziness. I don’t know what brings them on. I’m afraid these spells are going to make me fall and break something. Do you have any thoughts that could help? I’m 82. -R.M. ANSWER: The causes of dizziness (vertigo) are many. I’ll mention a couple, but you need a doctor’s exam to determine what the exact problem is.

Meniere’s (main-YAIRS) disease is a triad of dizziness, hearing loss and ear noises (tinnitus). It comes in brief attacks, with recovery in a short time. As time passes, attacks last longer, with briefer periods of relief.

A buildup of fluid in the inner ear is responsible. Water pills and a strict low-sodium diet help. Surgical drainage of the fluid is another treatment.

A viral infection of the inner ear is a common dizziness cause. Time eventually takes care of the virus. During the period of infection, a medicine like meclizine improves symptoms.

A third common problem is benign

Getting out of bed, rolling over in bed, looking up at a high shelf and just about any change in head position trigger an attack, which is short-lived. Tiny calcium crystals in the inner ear have migrated to places where they engender a discharge of confusing signals to the brain. Repositioning the crystals puts an end to the attacks.

Sit in the middle of a bed, far enough to the opposite side of the bed that your head will project over that side when you lie down. If a head turn to the right provokes an attack, quickly turn your head to the right, and keep it turned until dizziness goes. Then lie down quickly with your head off the side of the bed and still turned to the right. Then, from that position, turn your head to the left. Roll over onto your left side, with your nose pointed down to the floor, for 30 seconds. Then go back to the starting sitting position with head bent. If dizziness persists, repeat. If this is too complicated, let your doctor lead you through it.

Picnic Chicken This walnut-crusted baked chicken is delicious hot or cold.

Olive oil nonstick cooking spray 1 3/4 cups (about 8 ounces) walnuts 1 cup plain dried bread crumbs 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 1/4 teaspoon up to 1/2 teaspoon of ground red pepper, also known as cayenne 2 large eggs 8 medium (4 pounds) bone-in chicken breast halves, skin removed 8 medium (1 3/4 pounds) chicken drumsticks, skin removed Choice of sauce 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Grease two 15 1/2 by 10 1/2 inch jelly-roll pans with cooking spray.

2. In food processor with knife blade attached, process walnuts with 1/4 cup bread crumbs until walnuts are finely ground. In medium bowl, combine nut mixture, salt, ground red pepper and remaining 3/4 cup bread crumbs; stir until well-mixed.

In pie plate, beat eggs.

3. Cut each chicken breast half crosswise into two pieces. One at a time, dip breast pieces and drumsticks in

beaten egg, then into walnut mixture to coat evenly, pressing firmly so mixture adheres. Arrange chicken in jelly-roll pans; lightly coat chicken with cooking spray.

4. Bake chicken until golden brown and juices run clear when thickest part of chicken is pierced with tip of knife, 30 to 35 minutes, rotating pans between upper and lower oven racks halfway through baking.

5. Serve chicken hot, or cool slightly, cover and refrigerate to serve cold later. Makes 12 main-dish servings. • Each serving: About 311 calories, 16g total fat (2g saturated), 113mg cholesterol, 468mg sodium, 10g total carbs, 32g protein.

Three Dipping Sauces Our walnut-crusted baked chicken is even more delicious when dipped into one of these easy sauces. Cover and refrigerate sauce if not serving right away.

Blue-Cheese Sauce: In medium bowl, combine 4 ounces blue cheese, crumbled (1 cup); 1/2

cup mayonnaise; 1/2 cup plain lowfat yogurt; 1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce; and 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper until blended.

Makes about 1 1/2 cups sauce.

Creamy Honey-Mustard Sauce: In medium bowl, combine 2/3 cup Dijon mustard, 1/4 cup sour cream, 1/4 cup honey, and 3/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce until wellblended. Makes about 1 1/4 cups sauce.

Closet Door Sticks, Scrapes the Floor Q: I’ve got a closet door that scrapes the floor when I swing it open or shut, and it sticks when it’s closed. Is there an easy way to fix this, or is something seriously wrong? -- Harriet C., Denver A: Chances are the door just needs a bit of adjustment. Over time, as houses settle and temperature or humidity changes warp the wood of a door or its frame, the door doesn’t open or shut just right.

Grab a helper and a prybar or hammer, and prepare to fix this door.

First, check the overall condition of the door, its frame and the surrounding hardware (the doorknob and latch, hinges and the hinge plates where they’re screwed into the door frame). Make sure all of the hardware is screwed in properly and not loose or tearing away from the frame. Make sure there is no visible damage or warping of the door or frame -- usually there isn’t, unless the door

If the overall condition checks out as good, adjusting the hinges or shimming the door so it swings freely again is the likely course of action.

Shimming is a way of very slightly changing the angle at which a door is hung. You do this by adding a shim behind a door’s hinge to lift it slightly -- and then adjusting that angle up or down. Shim kits also are available at home-improvement stores.

Since the door’s angle has shifted slightly downward, first try adjusting the top hinge on the door-frame side by simply screwing all the hinge screws in a halfturn or so. This alone may lift the door just enough to even it out.

If that doesn’t work, you can either unscrew the top hinge and carefully shave away a paper-thin amount of the wooden frame in order to set the hinge slight back. Or, if you don’t want to damage the frame, shim the lower hinge in order to lift the door upward.

Unscrew the frame side of the bottom hinge, as your helper holds the door steady. Insert a very thin shim piece (the kits are usually cut to size, or you can use a wafer-thin piece of plywood or even a playing card to shim, and trim yourself) and place the hinge over the shim, using a power drill to drive the hinge screws through the shim into their usual place.

Shimming or adjusting the angle can

take time and a few attempts. Be patient, and you’ll soon have your door swinging freely.

HOME TIP: For doors that slightly scrape the floor as they open, place a rough piece of sandpaper underneath the sticky area and open and close the door several times -- this might smooth out the bottom of the door just enough to end the scraping.

PHOTO CREDIT: stock.xchg photo Updating an Old Favorite After years of creating recipes, shopping and cooking, even a Kitchen Diva needs to update her old favorites from time to time. It’s amazing how changing a few ingredients and adding new spices and herbs can revive an old recipe. I’ve decided to update my Chicken and Rice Salad by giving it a Mexican twist.

I’m adding flavorful herbs and spices to change the flavor profile of the dish. The black beans and avocados give the salad a creamy, buttery texture and add additional protein and nutrients. Nutrients found in avocados include vitamin E, vitamin C, lutein and the B vitamins folate, B-6, pantothenic acid, riboflavin and niacin -- all of which have been shown to be good for hair and skin.

Be selective about the avocados you use in this salad. An avocado is ready to serve when the skin turns from dark green to nearly black and yields when pressed gently with a thumb.

Firm avocados will ripen in a day or two at room temperature in a brown paper bag on your kitchen counter.

Ripe avocados can be kept in the refrigerator for several days.

Try this updated Avocado, Chicken and Rice Salad dish, and feel free to think outside of the recipe box the next time you prepare an old family

favorite.

AVOCADO, CHICKEN AND RICE SALAD 2 cups cooked long-grain white rice 2 ripe avocados 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 1 (15 ounce) can black beans 3 cups cooked chicken, shredded or cut into bite-sized pieces 4 green onions, root ends removed and discarded, white and green parts, chopped 1 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1 cup Italian dressing 1 cup cherry tomatoes 1/4 cup chopped cilantro, optional 1. Prepare rice according to package directions. Dice avocados and toss with lemon juice; set aside. Rinse and drain black beans. When the rice is ready, stir in chicken, beans, green onions, chili powder, salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper. Add Italian dressing and toss well to combine.

2. Pour into a serving bowl, cover with plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Add the avocados

and cherry tomatoes, tossing gently to combine. Sprinkle with cilantro, if desired. The Right Way to Remove Ticks DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I wanted to pass on to your readers something I found that works very well for removing ticks: Icy-Hot. My little dog got a tick right in our own yard.

I tried using a match, but I was so nervous that I might burn her. My sister told me to use Icy-Hot. I’m so relieved it did the trick! -- Diane O., Palmyra, N.Y. DEAR DIANE: Interesting tip! One way that we used to remove ticks

from our dogs many years ago was by smearing a dollop of Vaseline over the embedded tick, covering it completely. Eventually, the tick would suffocate or try to escape.

In recent years, however, veterinarians and disease-control experts have recommended against using Vaseline because it can take up to 48 hours for the tick to suffocate. Ticks need to be removed quickly -- within 24 hours or less. Why? Because after a day of feeding, the tick is completely engorged with blood. To keep feeding, it regurgitates that blood right back into your pet -- and if the tick is carrying a disease like Lyme, your pet is likely to be infected.

Ditto with the old-fashioned match trick. When a lighted match is held to the tick, the tick often pulls out quickly -- but it tends to regurgitate as it does so.

So what’s the best way to remove ticks? Experts recommend tweezers, grabbing as close to the tick’s head as possible. Slowly pull the head out

without twisting or jerking -- being careful not to squish the tick for the reasons listed above. If the tick’s head or part of its head breaks off in the skin, monitor your pet for a few days.

It should be worked out by your pet’s own body, but if signs of infection appear, contact your veterinarian.
