My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin Canada Day turned into a fun road trip for my daughter and me last weekend.

We looked over the list of events we were aware of, and tried to figure out how to hit as many as possible.

We hoped to make it to Coleman to enjoy a few pancakes before the parade, but it took only a few minutes on the busy highway to realize that wasn’t going to happen.

We missed out on the pancakes, but did enjoy the parade. It’s always fun to hear the excitement of young children in the crowd as the parade draws near.

Once the last fire truck had passed, Jaiden and I were off again. We knew chances of making it in time for the parade in Waterton were slim, but decided to stick to our plan.

We were close, but caught only the final fire engine passing by.

There was a huge crowd at the community centre, many sporting red or maple-leaf-covered clothing appropriate for the day.

At Waterton, hundreds of people celebrated the official opening of the newly-renovated school, which has become the Waterton Community Centre.

Many former students also gathered to uncover what they had buried in a time capsule 21 years ago.

Our last hurried bit of the road trip was to be back in Pincher Creek in time for the final demonstration by Maddogs Cannoneers at Kootenai Brown Pioneer

Village.

I’ll bet this group was a highlight of the day for many people, and too noisy for just as many others. Dressed in handmade period costumes, the cannoneers shared history while firing off rounds with their two cannons.

Alan Wilson had the opportunity to light the fuse and blow the cannon, which clearly made his day.

There was more to see, and events carrying on until suppertime in Crowsnest Pass, but we were pooped and not too keen to hit the road yet again. Besides, there’s always next year....

Last summer, Jaiden and I went on a 12-hour road trip exploring Nova Scotia on Canada Day. The mood of celebration was a little higher than it is here – only the odd business or home wasn’t decorated, and every community we passed through was celebrating.

It was awesome, and will always be a great memory for us.

Sometimes I think we focus on long weekends simply as time off, rather than thinking about the meaning behind the holiday.

To everyone who helped host the celebrations and to those who attended, thanks for showing your national pride.

The Breeze Mailbox Dr. Van Bussel off to upgrade surgical skills One of Pincher Creek’s 11 family physicians has begun a year’s leave of absence as he pursues more medical training.

Dr. Jared Van Bussel temporarily closed his practice at The Associate Clinic on June 21, and leaves for Prince Albert, Sask., to enrol in the University of Saskatchewan’s Enhanced Surgical Skills for Family Medicine program, located at the Victoria Hospital.

He’s off to Prince Albert because, as he says, “It has a well-respected general practitioner (GP) surgery program.”

The surgical skills acquired will allow him to do C-sections, D and Cs, hernia repairs, endoscopies and other low-risk, day-admission surgeries.

Dr. Van Bussel returns to practise again in Pincher Creek in July 2013.

“I’m very pleased with Dr. Van Bussel’s decision,” comments the clinic’s physician spokesperson, Dr. Rob Cameron. “We are in the fortunate position of being able to offer ongoing care so his patients will be well looked after.

“And when he returns that will give us three GP surgeons on the roster. That means more skilled resources available to the community and helps spread the work load among them all.

“Along with our four anesthesiologists, our GP specialists in endoscopies and heart disease, we have a robust team able to look after our patients’ needs.”

Dr. Cameron went on to point out that our rural community does unusually well for physician services with 11 general practitioners, the inter-disciplinary Good Health Team and visiting specialist program.

Are you a sinner?

By Shannon Robin This weekend is a great time to be a sinner. The nickname describes those who manage to complete the gruelling Sinister 7 Ultramarathon, held annually in Crowsnest Pass.

Over 1,400 runners will take part in the 148-kilometre endurance test, which begins Saturday morning in Blairmore.

The new inflatable start structure will be set up in front of Stone’s Throw Cafe on Main Street, and the run will begin at 7 a.m.

Some will tackle the entire course solo – 170 to be exact – while the majority will run as relay teams.

Nine teams from the area will be joined by international ultra-sport enthusiasts from as far as Australia.

Crowds will also be out to support local soloists Ryan Peebles, Paul Pichurski and Jim Mitchell as they tackle the rugged Rocky Mountain terrain and an elevation gain of 5,320 feet.

A maximum of 27 hours is given to finish the race, and many will run through the night. Weather will be a huge factor – it’s going to be hot – and it’s anticipated only 30 to 40 per cent of soloists will finish.

The average male soloist will take about 16 hours of straight running to claim a sinner title, while the female soloists will take 18 to 19 hours.

If being named a sinner isn’t enough, there are $1,000 prizes up for grabs for the top female, top male and top team.

About 100 volunteers come from all over to help, and local families open their doors to host participants in their homes.

The level of community support and spirit is something that leaves a lasting impression on racers and their families.

A big change in the race for this year is a move away from the Albert Stella Memorial Arena. As the number of race participants has grown, the event has outgrown the facility.

Organizers Brian Gallant and Andrew Fairhurst embraced the challenge, and used it as an opportunity to make the race even better.

Starting on Main Street will give the race more visibility, and businesses will also benefit from the large crowd gathered downtown. Headquarters and the finish line will be at the Crowsnest Sports Complex.

Back in December, entry spots for the popular race filled in just one hour, and a long waiting list was formed. The marathon has grown substantially since the inaugural race five years ago, which

had 160 participants.

Brian attributes this growth to positive word of mouth. He and Andrew make a point of giving participants lots of reasons to talk about Sinister 7 as a great experience.

“We consistently hear that this is one of the best-organized events,” Brian says.

“People really like the community and plan their holidays around the race.”

Providing a quality event is a priority for Brian and Andrew, who operate as Full Moon Adventure Company.

The name Sinister 7 came about by chance. Brian had been reading online about something labelled sinister, when he happened to look up to the wall map and see the Seven Sisters Mountain – it all came together in that moment!

“I thought it was perfect,” Brian says.

“We could market the race as a long, gruelling, sinister event.”

And that it is.

Andrew designed the course to have seven legs, and teams can have up to seven runners.

Brian describes himself as a multisport adventure racer, while saying that Andrew is the “distance guy” who has competed at world endurance races.

Full Moon Adventure Company started with six other partners. In 2006, Brian and Andrew took it over together, with a goal of treating it as a business rather than as a hobby.

“It was an opportunity to take our passion for the outdoors and sports and combine it with business,” Brian says. “It gives us a great lifestyle.”

With regard to the Sinister 7, Brian seems to be kidding only a little bit when he says he’s getting older and can’t punish himself anymore, so why not punish others instead!

“My philosophy was to create a professional run with a grassroots feel,” Brian says. “We expect high quality and go the extra mile to make everything work.”

A challenge for Brian and Andrew, as the race grows, is to maintain the personal touch that is so important to them.

For this reason, they’ve tried not to let it grow too big, too fast.

Full Moon Adventure Company hosts another event, the Half Moon in August, also in Crowsnest Pass. This adventure race includes running, hiking, paddling, mountain biking and navigation.

Full Moon in June was the flagship event for the company, which ended in 2011 after 13 years.

Terry takes two

The Alberta Donkey and Mule Association held its first equine show in Nanton, June 16 and 17. The familyfriendly event was a huge success, and organizers already have plans in motion for their event next year.

Gary Johnson of Claresholm claimed top honours for the show. Terry Aris of Tired Ass Ranch in Lundbreck entered two teams and came away with both second and third place.

Leader of the pack

By Shannon Robin Aggressive and habituated mule deer have become a problem at Waterton Lakes National Park, and Parks Canada has Chris Jobe at work trying to solve this.

Chris and her border collies drive around town first thing in the morning scouting out the wildlife. Chris decides where to push them out to, and then sets the dogs to work.

“The deer are smart, and you have to change your routine to keep them guessing,” she says.

Chris and her dogs are out five or six times a day, checking nooks and crannies for deer that need a nudge to get back out in the wild where they belong.

Although deer have been known to come after dogs, they don’t respond the same when the dogs are in a pack, and the deer have figured out that Chris is the leader of her pack.

Often when the deer see her coming, they just get up and leave on their own.

“It’s not normal to see deer, bear and cougars in town, and it’s not natural for deer to have fawns near people,” Chris says. “Deer need to be aware that they need to give way for humans, but people tend to walk around them, which doesn’t help.”

The animals have become habituated to the townsite and tourists, and obviously feel safer from predators there, as four does have fawned in town this spring. Two fawns have been moved out, but two still remain.

Chris and her canine team will remain on patrol until mid-July, which is the end of fawning season.

“I feel very fortunate, and I love my job,” Chris says. “I feel like I’m putting the wild back

in the wild.”

The six dogs on the team are rotated, and come out with Chris on patrol three at a time.

They look very official in their matching safety vests made by a friend.

These working dogs are well trained and obedient, but also love a scratch behind the ear.

Chris has raised and trained each one. The youngest dog is a year and a half old, while the oldest is eight.

She says a similar program to keep elk out of town in Banff was initiated by Parks Canada 10 years ago, but the Waterton project is the first effort to move mule deer.

Educating people is an important part of the problem-solving process. Many think of deer as docile animals, but they can become aggressive if they feel their young are being threatened.

This is Chris’s second year herding the Waterton deer, and there is one year left in the program.

Last year the collies and their master were moving 50 to 60 deer through town most days.

This year that number has dropped to the low 20s.

The program has been positively received by both tourists and Waterton residents.

Chris says many people have stories of being chased and say it’s nice to not be afraid.

Chris acquired her first border collie in 1995 to help on the ranch with her Scottie sheep. She did lots of research and training, and even began hosting clinics. This led to demonstrations and competitions where her dogs have been showing their prowess.

Watch for Rod on Friday

Rod Sinclair of Pincher Creek has the honour of participating in the 100th anniversary edition of the Calgary Stampede Parade this Friday.

Rod and 24 other past champions were invited to make up the Calgary Stampede Rodeo Committee’s entry for the historic event.

“It’s a tribute to the past champions of our rodeo who have made it what it is today,” says Sean O’Connor, the fellow in charge of this entry for the centennial parade.

Whether you’re one of the lucky ones watching the parade in person, or catching it on television at home, you can watch for Rod in entry number 34.

Five former rodeo champs will ride in a stagecoach, and 20 will be mounted.

Personalized serapes will be the way to tell who’s who, if you’re not sure who Rod is.

It’s ironic that although Rod was an active competitor at the Stampede for many years, this is the first time he will ride in the parade.

“Other than watching it on TV, I’ve never been to the parade, so this will be a first for me,” he says. “With it being the 100th, it’s something pretty special.”

The entire day is laid out for the past champions – from arriving at 6 a.m. to riding in the parade, to watching the rodeo from an executive suite, to some public relations and fun.

“I’m quite honoured,” Rod says. “They had a lot of people to choose from, quite frankly, and I’m not really sure why I got asked.”

Rod has considered many possible reasons for his good fortune, including simple logistics. “They might have thought logistically that chances of me being able to participate might be better,” he says. “I’m pretty handy, and it might have been by virtue of the fact I was close.”

Sean says that identifying those who would be willing and able to come was the first step, then came the challenge of contacting them.

“It’s great to have Rod join the Stampede,” he says.

Rod started riding at a young age and competed in his first rodeo at the age of 12.

A serious shoulder injury in 1985 ended both his amateur and professional riding endeavours.

Over his competitive career of 15 years, Rod won many championships. He was a bareback champion, co-winner of the Guy Weadick Award, and most valuable cowboy at the Calgary Stampede, Chinook Rodeo Association cowboy of the year and three-time bareback bronc riding champion.

As part of the Stampede title, Rod was also the North American Rodeo Commission World Cup Bareback Riding Champion.

With a trophy case full of such awards, it’s no wonder Rod was invited to the special role in the anniversary edition of the Stampede parade, honouring past champions and 100 years of the Stampede.

Rod has been an active member of the Pincher Creek and District Agricultural Society, and was director of the local pro rodeo for 20 years.

“I don’t volunteer like I used to,” he says. “I mostly help out by teaching the up-and-comers who are interested in riding rough stock.”

Rod adds that his involvement with the rodeo now is mostly through photography. You can

The Pass Piranhas Summer Swim Club had 18 athletes competing in Claresholm June 16.

The swimmers had a very successful meet achieving a total of 43 best times.

Four swimmers also won individual events while five others had top three finishes.

Motorcycle safety reminders RCMP news release

The Alberta Traffic Safety initiative for the month of July focuses on the importance of motorcycle safety.

Motorcycles are less stable and less visible than cars and thus riders need to concentrate on the road and make sure that other users of the road see them. Motorcycles often have high performance capabilities, which can lure riders into performing risky maneuvers that are not only dangerous to themselves but also other users of the roadways.

A motorcyclist involved in a collision lacks the protection of an enclosed vehicle, so they are more likely to sustain serious injuries. Between 2005 and 2009, 3,918 motorcycles

were involved in serious collisions, resulting in 164 deaths and 4,043 injuries. In many cases these collisions could have been avoided by motorists taking proper precautions.

Safety tips for motorcycles operators: • Stay out of blind spots, make sure other drivers can see you.

• Be alert at intersections: make eye contact with other motorists before making your move.

• Protect yourself with the right gear and an approved motorcycle helmet. Helmets are required by law in Alberta.

• When it comes to other drivers, your speed can be easily mis-judged.

• Ride defensively and make every effort to enhance your visibility.

• Sharing the road safely is one of the keys to having other motorists

respect you as a motorcyclist.

• Be aware of road and weather conditions, as well as construction areas, that may affect the integrity of the road.

• Showing-off and speeding do not pay off! On the contrary tickets for engaging in dangerous behaviours can become very costly.

Safety tips for other motorists sharing the road with motorcyclists: • During summer months, look twice for motorcyclists at intersections or when changing lanes.

• Never underestimate the speed of a motorcycle, their size makes their speed deceptive.

Police are reminding motorists that it is everyone’s responsibility to share the road and contribute to safe roads.

Area men charged under Wildlife Act Government of Alberta news release

On June 6, Nathan Benjamin Tschetter and William James Tschetter from the Fort Macleod area pled guilty in Fort Macleod Provincial Court to 10 counts under the Wildlife Act. “Alberta’s fish and wildlife officers are dedicated to protecting our province’s wildlife resources,” said Minister of Justice and Solicitor General Jonathan Denis. “Convictions like these are a result of their hard work and commitment to ensuring Albertans can continue to enjoy the natural beauty of our province.”

The charges in the Fort Macleod area resulted from a six-month undercover investigation into the trafficking of eagle parts and big game antlers.

Nathan Tschetter received fines totaling $12,405 and a nine-year recreational hunting license suspension, while William Tschetter received fines totaling $27,220 and a 21-year recreational hunting license suspension.

Family medicine program expansion will lead to better health care access Government of Alberta news release

Albertans will receive more access to primary health care thanks to 26 additional family medicine residents and 10 more family medicine teaching physicians at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Medicine.

Through the expanded post-graduate family medicine residency program, Albertans will have access to more family physicians who will be part of primary health care teams. The additional teaching physicians will also see their own patients in addition to supporting the residents.

“Funding that we are providing to expand this program means that more family physicians will be trained in our province and more Albertans will have access to the health care they need,” said Fred Horne, Minister of Health. “Expanding the residency program is another step toward meeting our promise of every Albertan having a home in the health care system. That includes having access to a primary health care team.”

The additional positions expand the university’s firstyear family medicine residency program to 84 residents.

The students will spend their two-year family medicine residency at Calgary’s South Health Campus, Sheldon Chumir Health Centre, and Sunridge Family Medicine Teaching Centre.

“Our medical professionals are critical to our health care system,” said Stephen Khan, Minister of Enterprise

and Advanced Education. “That’s why we invested in more undergraduate seats four years ago, which is now translating into more residency positions today. We’re ensuring funding supports the full training of our medical students.”

The expanded family medicine residency program is the result of $10.3 million in grant funding from the Government of Alberta in 2011-12. The funding was used to expand training space and add teaching staff in preparation for the extra students, who start their residency training on July 1.

The grant was also used to increase training opportunities outside of Calgary for post-graduate specialty residents. The residents performed 332 weeks (a 97.6 per cent increase) of specialty rural rotations this academic year in communities including Lethbridge, Red Deer, Medicine Hat, Yellowknife and Banff. The residents are in a number of specialty programs ranging from general internal medicine and emergency family medicine to general surgery and pediatrics.

“The expansion of the family medicine residency program increases the University of Calgary’s ability to offer medical student graduates an opportunity to train in and stay in our city. This hands-on experience will benefit Calgarians, and the community of southern Alberta,” said Elizabeth Cannon, University of Calgary President.

Donkeys + horses + mules = family fun

The Alberta Donkey and Mule Club (ADMC) members enjoy their “longears” and wanted to share the fun of a show with horses.

Participants and spectators enjoyed a family-oriented weekend June 16 and 17, while watching the skills of mules and donkeys performing in events along with horses.

Many people attending the Nanton Equine Show were surprised to see that mules are not only pack animals.

The Nanton equine event was unique in that it not only showcased all equines – horses, mules and donkeys – but also driving events, and a farm chore competition featuring

Three teams were registered for the chore team competition that was won by Gary Johnson of Claresholm.

It was very impressive to watch these animals move precisely when asked.

Young Gunz Trick Riders performed an exciting demonstration each afternoon.

Fifty-two animals and 43 competitors competed in 85 events, including Western, English, hunter jumping and driving both in singles and pairs. A feature event was pleasure sidesaddle. These three riders (one only 10 years old) were very elegant and graceful as they put their horses through the course.

Gymkhana events were held for

both riders and drivers and drivers with pairs. Contestants ranged from 6 years old to 75 years young, and there was a wide range of talent in riders as well as equines.

A prime rib dinner and auction was well attended.

Show chairperson Alice Todd sincerely thanks the local businesses and organizations that generously supported the event.

A common question on Sunday afternoon was “are you (ADMC) going to have this show again next year?” Please mark your calendars for June 15 and 16, 2013.

More Alberta students completing high school Government of Alberta news release

Alberta’s three-year high school completion rate increased to 74.1 per cent in 2011 from 72.6 per cent in 2010. This increase follows efforts by government, school jurisdictions and communities working together to keep students engaged and motivated to stay in school.

“It’s encouraging to see our rates increase year over year.

Premier Redford has placed a priority on raising high school completion rates and government is working hard to help more young Albertans reach this important milestone,” said Jeff Johnson, Minister of Education. “Albertans expect this province to reach its full potential and more students finishing high school is key to securing a bright economic future for our province.”

Improved completion rates is just one part of the story.

Alberta’s dropout rate for students aged 14-18 was significantly lower in 2011, down to 3.2 percent. The combined increase in completion and decrease in dropout rates means overall more students than ever are staying and finishing high school.

Alberta Education’s High School Completion Strategic Framework was introduced in 2009 to address low completion rates. Projects under the framework have worked to build awareness of best practices and work with stakeholders to support students in completing high school.

Alberta Education has also launched a new multimedia resource, available at www.education.alberta.ca/highschoolcompletion/progress, designed to further engage schools and school administrators, providing information on how completion rates are calculated in Alberta, sharing successful projects underway across the province and showcasing the different pathways students can take to complete high school.

Pat Stier on tour Press release On June 19, Mr. Stier toured the area between Pincher Creek and Twin Butte to view the proposed area for several new major power lines being planned by Altalink. The tour was conducted by the Chinook Area Land Users Association (CALUA). This was followed by a meeting at the Twin Butte Hall attended by approximately 120 area residents and three Members of the Legislative Assembly, Pat Stier, Gary Bikman and Joe Anglin. Mr. Anglin gave a presentation regarding the overbuilding of power lines in Alberta which was well-received by meeting attendees. The purpose of the meeting was to inform residents of the events so far regarding the Goose Lake to Etzicom Coulee Transmission Project. The aforementioned MLAs are offering assistance by providing detailed information regarding Bill 50 and power line issues in Alberta. Mr. Stier said, “We will be assisting constituents where possible in reaching a satisfactory conclusion regarding this issue.”

On June 21, Mr. Stier visited with both the Spray Lakes Saw Mill representatives as well as the concerned residents who have formed the Castle Crown Wilderness Coalition. Spray Lakes representatives discussed the logging and project details; specifically, the thorough and intensive preparation studies that have been completed on the project and the approval process that led to the permit for logging that area and the merits of good forestry practices.

While speaking with the Castle Crown Wilderness Coalition representatives, Mr. Stier was informed that they had conducted a survey regarding the logging in the area and the effect it would have on residents. The majority of residents surveyed, felt the logging would have an adverse effect on economic development plus the tourism and travel industry. They also put forward that there was no legitimate scientific, economic or social reason for it to proceed and that the area should be designated a protected area.

Mr. Stier found both meetings very informative and sincerely hopes there is some way that increased awareness of the issue will assist in helping both groups come to a satisfactory agreement.

Mr. Stier also stopped to speak with the York Creek Lodge board regarding the seniors lodge and housing in Crowsnest Pass. The board presented capital project data, including drawings and an overall plan for a proposed $32 million expansion and upgrade of the current lodge. The board is looking for approval and funding from the province. Mr. Stier said, “I’m happy to give my assistance in any way possible.”

On June 22, Mr. Stier attended the Crowsnest Community Support For Adults with Disabilities Family BBQ, which provides support to adults with developmental disabilities programs. The BBQ was held at the Legion in Coleman where Mr. Stier had the privilege of meeting a few of the participants in the program as well as counselors and organizers. “We discussed the wonderful program for assisted living that they have there,” said Mr. Stier.

Following the BBQ, Mr. Stier attended a meeting with the Board of Trustees for the Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Separate Regional Division in Lethbridge, regarding the modernization projects for a few of the schools in the division including Pincher Creek, as well as the overall strategies for the future in regards to the board and the division.

The Waterton community and nearly 500 visitors not only celebrated Canada Day in Waterton Lakes National Park but also cut the ribbon on the new Waterton Community Centre.

The fun began with a colourful and enthusiastic bike parade followed by the singing of ‘“O Canada.”

The main event was the grand opening of the newly-renovated school, now known as the Waterton Community Centre.

Many former students and teachers shared memories, and opened a time capsule created by the students 21 years ago.

Canada Day cake, a hotdog lunch and children’s activities rounded out the day.

What RCMP were up to this long weekend RCMP news release

Alberta law enforcement officers were out in force to encourage drivers and those enjoying Alberta’s parks and forested areas to be responsible over the Canada Day long weekend.

To ensure road safety, officers enforced traffic laws, including the introduction of tougher provincial penalties for drunk drivers with a BAC over .08, conducted check stops and off-highway vehicle compliance checks.

Many of the traffic-related charges were issued by RCMP and Alberta traffic sheriffs, working together in Integrated Traffic Units.

Public information activities were also stepped up to encourage responsible use of highways, public lands and parks, and inform the public about safe recreation practices, and regulations.

From Friday, June 29, to Monday, July 2, RCMP members, Alberta traffic sheriffs, conservation officers, fish and wildlife officers as well as commercial vehicle enforcement officers, issued 4,518 tickets for offences ranging from dangerous driving to speeding. Among the charges were: 15 impaired driving charges, 60 other

alcohol-related violations and 19 24hour suspensions for alcohol or drug use; 2,973 speeding violations; 34 distracted driving violations; 51 intersection-related infractions; 59 hazardous violations including dangerous driving; 188 seatbelt or child restraint infractions; and 539 violations ranging from having no insurance to driving while suspended.

Of those charges, 299 were laid in the Highway 63 corridor, including: two impaired driving charges, 19 other alcohol-related violations and four 24-hour suspensions for alcohol or drug use; 198 speeding violations; two intersection-related infractions; six hazardous violations including dangerous driving; 12 seat belt or child restraint infractions; and 56 violations ranging from having no insurance to driving while suspended.

Commercial vehicle enforcement officers also handed out 26 tickets to unsafe truck drivers for mechanical defects, and four for overloading.

by Meg Cabot (Point, $17.99) Reviewed by Ealish Waddell Meg Cabot’s modern-day take on the Greek myth of Hades and Persephone begins with “Abandon,” in which readers are introduced to Pierce, a troubled young woman with one heck of a reason to be angsty: At age 16, Pierce died -- and instead of seeing a tunnel of light, found herself shivering on a dark, cold beach, looking up into one oddly familiar face.

That face belongs to John, former shipwreck victim and current death deity, who rules the ghostly world between life and whatever comes after. It turns out that Pierce’s destiny has been entwined with John’s for far longer than she ever guessed, and even when she’s brought back to life, her reality will never be the same.

In the sequel, “Underworld,” John has rescued Pierce from the dark forces that pursue her and taken her back to his home in the shadows.

She’s safe there -- as long as she never leaves. But Pierce knows the battle with John’s enemies isn’t over, and people she loves back at home are going to be caught in the crossfire if she doesn’t do something about it.

WHAT CAN DEFEAT ME? Let’s say you’re in three notrump and West leads the six of clubs. There appears to be nothing to the play, so you take East’s king of clubs with the ace and return a low diamond. West follows low, but when you win with dummy’s queen, East shows out, and there you are -- in danger of losing the contract. In due course, you find that no matter how you twist and turn, the best you can do is go down one.

You could attribute the result to bad luck, if you were so inclined, but the plain fact is that if you played the hand this way, the outcome is really your own fault.

The moment dummy comes down, you can see that the contract is icecold if the diamonds are divided 2-2 or 3-1. The only threat is an unlikely -- but possible -- 4-0 break. Granting that a 4-0 diamond division is only

a 1-in-10 possibility, that does not excuse the failure to make provisions for it.

Once you’ve developed the habit of worrying about such things, it becomes clear that the right play at trick two is the jack of diamonds, not the deuce. If West has all four diamonds, leading the jack will enable you to make four diamond tricks -and the contract -- because dummy’s K-Q-7 will eventually swallow up West’s 10-9-4 with the aid of repeated finesses.

The two lovely people caught in a peculiar situation are Alfred (Ewan McGregor), a British fisheries expert, and Harriet (Emily Blunt), a representative for a sheik who wants to bring fly fishing to the Middle East. A hilariously snippy UK press secretary (Kristin Scott Thomas) decides it would make a nice news story to indulge the ludicrous idea of introducing Scottish fish to a desert stream.

The movie gets bogged down in the middle, when the obstacles to romance have to be addressed (Alfred’s cold wife, Harriet’s boyfriend, terrorists). However, the performances from Blunt and McGregor hit the romcom bullseye, keeping things breezy and fun.

“Casa de Mi Padre” (R) -- It must have been a fun idea to work with: Will Ferrell with a straight face playing the hero in a Mexican gangster melodrama. The

result has a limited appeal. Even for people who “get it,” the schtick can only hold up for so long. Fans of Ferrell in “Anchorman” will be disappointed that this movie doesn’t have the same rapidfire one-liners.

Ferrell plays Armando, a simple, kind man who works on his father’s ranch.

His brother Raul (Diego Luna) returns to the family estate to introduce his fiancee (Genesis Rodriguez) and fix the family’s financial struggles. Trouble starts immediately when Armando falls in love with Raul’s fiance, and Raul turns out to be a drug dealer who has made a powerful enemy (Gael Garcia Bernal).

The magic here is that everyone seems down with the absurdity.

“Get the Gringo” (R) -- Mel Gibson plays a gravel-voiced tough guy who lands himself in a Mexican prison. As a gritty action hero, Gibson carries an odd sense of humor and a festering rage under a cracking facade. It’s very fitting. The movie is simultaneously grim and flippant, mean and nice. Rent this one out if you need a pulp action with plenty of one-liners and gun-toting baddies hunting a flawed protagonist.

Craft a Denim Purse With Jean Pockets Recycle an old or outgrown pair of jeans and make a trendy pocket purse with a shoulder strap that your preteen daughter can use this summer. It’s perfect for holding a comb, Chapstick and change when she’s out and about with friends.

If she’s having a sleepover party, pull the supplies together and let the girls create and design their own purse to keep. It’s a super-simple make-andtake project everyone will remember.

To get started, cut out the back pocket from a pair of old jeans (the heavier the denim fabric, the better), cutting along the outside of the pocket. Cut very close to the pocket’s top stitching without cutting the pocket. Don’t limit yourself to blue jeans. For unusual purses, we used pockets from black, red and gold jeans we picked up for under a dollar at summer garage sales.

For a shoulder strap, determine the length of cording or ribbon that suits the child’s height, and handstitch the ends to the top side edges of the pocket opening. Old woven sashes or cotton belts (with buckles cut off)

also work well.

Scout around the house for interesting items to decorate the pocket purse. Attach the items with fabric glue, or assist young children with a glue gun.

Here are some ideas for different styles: Jazzy: Glue a fringe trim to the side and bottom edges. Glue big rhinestones to the front of the purse for an eye-catching accent.

Romantic: Glue a square of cotton lace to the front. Add items from old costume jewelry, such as pearls, beads, silk flowers and a tiny brooch.

Blame Ingrown Hairs for Shaving Bumps DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a black woman writing on behalf of my boyfriend. He has a crop of little bumps on his face. I asked him if they are pimples, and he laughed. He said they’re shaving bumps. How does he get rid of them? -- R.C. ANSWER: Men of any race can develop shaving bumps. Black men’s hair is more tightly coiled, and they, therefore, are quite susceptible to them. If a man cuts his facial hair too closely to the skin, it can spring back toward the skin and penetrate it.

Tightly coiled hair is especially prone to this. The sharp end of the hair pushing back into the skin acts like a foreign body. It irritates the skin and inflames it. A little bump forms.

It must be a chore for your boyfriend to shave. To get rid of the bumps, he has to stop shaving until they go away. He also has to dislodge all the hairs that have penetrated the skin.

He can do this by taking a clean needle and slipping it under the loop

that the hair makes. Then he pops the end of the hair out of the skin. When he frees all the ingrown hairs and stops shaving, his skin will clear.

To prevent new bumps when he resumes shaving, he has to adopt a different shaving style. He must soften his beard with soap and warm water before using a razor. He will do himself a favor by buying an electric razor and putting it on a setting that doesn’t shave the beard too closely.

With either a blade or an electric shaver, he should shave in the direction of hair growth, and he shouldn’t pull his skin taut.

If he goes through all this and doesn’t meet with success, he’ll have to see a doctor. In fact, if his shaving bumps are crusted with dried pus, he should start out by seeing a doctor. The pus indicates infection, and he’ll need an antibiotic cream to get rid of any infection.

If your boyfriend is squeamish about freeing the ingrown hairs with a needle, you can do the job for him.

Grilled Sweet Potatoes We steam and slice sweet potatoes, and then give them a turn on the grill to create this deliciously unexpected side dish.

2 1/2 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled if you like 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper Parsley, for garnish 1. Prepare outdoor grill for covered, direct grilling on medium.

2. In 5- to 6-quart saucepot or Dutch oven, place collapsible steamer basket and 1 inch water. Cover saucepot; heat water to boiling on high on range top. Cut sweet potatoes into 1/2-inch-thick diagonal slices.

3. Place potato slices in steamer basket; reduce heat to low. Cover saucepot and simmer 12 to 15 minutes or until potatoes are just fork-tender; do not overcook. (Potatoes can be steamed a day ahead and refrigerated until ready to grill.)

4. Transfer potato slices to jellyroll pan; brush with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper to season

both sides. Place potato slices on hot grill grate. Cover grill and cook potatoes 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly charred and tender, turning slices over once with large metal spatula.

Replacing a Grill’s Propane Regulator Q: I picked up a used gas grill for free the other day. The only problem with it, as acknowledged by the owner, is that the hose connecting the regulator to the propane tank has a leak in it. Is this something I can fix easily? Paying for an expensive repair would kind of negate the “free” part of the deal. -Jake in San Diego A: This should be a fairly easy repair, and not expensive at all. Replacement regulator and hose assemblies for most types of gas grills can be found at the home-improvement store for around $20.

First, make sure the propane tank (if it came with the grill) is completely shut off by turning the tank spigot clockwise until it is tightly closed. Set the grill’s control knobs to the “off ” position.

Remove the hose assembly by unscrewing the hose connections from the propane tank and the grill. You can use pliers if necessary on this step. If the connectors are stubborn, spray a bit of lubricating oil on them and allow to work for about five minutes before trying to unscrew them.

Take the regulator and hose assembly to the home-improvement store to match it up with the correct replacement part. If the grill didn’t come with a propane tank, or if the accompanying tank is empty, now is also a good time to either purchase a propane tank or exchange the old one.

Back home, hook up the regulator assembly to the propane tank and to the grill. Do not use pliers at this point -- hand-tighten the connections. Pliers can crack the plastic shell inside the connectors. Once the connectors are on straight, you can use pliers to gently tighten the connectors about a halfturn.

Next, test the connections for leaks.

Mix dish soap and water until the solution is nice and frothy. Leaving the grill knobs in the “off ” position, turn on the propane tank and drizzle the soapy water over each connection, including where the hoses connect to the regulator. (A sponge can make this task easier.)

If you see bubbles rising and popping

fast at one of the connections, or if you smell gas, there’s a leak. Shut off the propane tank and re-tighten the connections, then test again until the connections no longer leak.

HOME TIP: When grilling, only open the propane-tank valve 1/2 turn. This supplies enough gas to the burners, and makes emergency shut off very fast should you ever need to close the valve.

PHOTO CREDIT: stock.xchg photo Mixed Green Madness I’ve been losing my mind (and spending way too much money) at the Farmer’s Market. The vast array of beautiful fruits and vegetables overwhelms me every time. Last week, the bundles of Rainbow Swiss chard with its colorful stems and fan-like leaves were too tempting to resist. The watermelon radishes, which look like a rose-colored pinwheels inside, also captured my attention. I originally planned to cook the Swiss Chard with some smoke-roasted tomatoes and add the radishes to my coleslaw recipe.

When it was time to prepare the greens, I decided to add a few cups of the leftover coleslaw vegetables (without any dressing on them) into the pot, too. It’s wonderful! You also can add in kale or spinach, with or instead of the cabbage, if that’s what you have on hand. Mixing fresh and frozen greens also works beautifully in this versatile recipe.

I love adding oil-packed, sun-dried or smoke-roasted tomatoes to finish the greens, but a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of lemon peel also is tasty.

MIXED GREENS WITH GARLIC AND LEMON 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 large bunches Swiss chard (about 2 pounds total), cleaned, stemmed and chopped, stems reserved (see Tip below) 1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced 1 large carrot, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes

1/2 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth or water 1 teaspoon reduced-sodium soy sauce 1 small head green cabbage, finely shredded 2 small watermelon radishes, chopped (optional) 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon seasoned rice wine vinegar 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 3 tablespoons chopped, sun-dried or smoke-roasted tomatoes and the oil 1. In a large nonstick skillet or Dutch oven, heat the oil over medium heat.

Add the Swiss chard stems, onion and carrot, and cook until the onion is translucent and the stems soften, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and red pepper flakes and stir until garlic is fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the broth or water and soy sauce, stirring to combine.

Increase heat to high and bring sauce to a boil.

2. Decrease the heat to medium-low, add the Swiss chard, cabbage and radishes, if desired, and toss to mix. Cover and cook for 7 to 10 minutes, until greens are tender. Stir in lemon zest, lemon juice, vinegar and black pepper. Remove from heat and serve with sun-dried or smokeroasted tomatoes and a drizzle of the oil.

Makes 6 servings.

TIP: Store unwashed fresh greens in a plastic bag, removing as much of the

air from the bag as possible, for up to 5 days. The longer they are stored, the more bitter the flavor becomes. Do not wash greens before storing because exposure to water encourages spoilage.

To clean fresh greens, discard any leaves that are wilted, brown, yellowing or damaged. Immerse greens in a sink full of water and wash well to remove sand, grit and any debris. Lift out, drain, rinse and repeat until the water is clean.

To stem, make a V-shaped cut where the stem meets the leaf. Use the stems the way you would use celery, and cook them with the onions. Stack the leaves and coarsely chop them into 3- to 4-inch ribbons, or roll several leaves together into a cigar shape and slice into thin ribbons.

Senior Pets Need Extra Checkups DEAR PAW’S CORNER: How often should my 12-year-old mutt, “Akira,” see the veterinarian? He’s very healthy for an older dog, but my girlfriend says he needs to have more than a once-a-year physical. Is that true? -- Matt C., Longwood, Fla. DEAR MATT: Twice a year is a good guideline for senior pets to visit their veterinarian, if they’re otherwise healthy. That’s because older dogs and cats can develop conditions com-

mon to pets of advanced age quickly -- conditions that sometimes go unnoticed but should be treated sooner rather than later so the pet’s quality of life doesn’t diminish.

It’s normal for a pet to slow down as it ages. But the reduced activity that an owner sees as normal can mask developing conditions like arthritis, thyroid imbalance, heart disease or cancer. A dog or cat’s slowing pace also can lead to obesity, meaning owners need to regulate and monitor their diets closely so that senior pets get proper nutrition while avoiding excess calories.

Many vets will recommend a twiceyearly exam once a pet reaches an age considered senior. (This varies a bit for dogs. Larger dogs are often considered senior pets after age 8 or 9; smaller dogs might be 10 or older.) It’s not a moneymaking move -- it’s a good recommendation. The exam should include a full physical, along with testing for developing conditions like diabetes or other ill-

nesses that, untreated, can drastically shorten a pet’s life.

Additionally, you should keep Akira’s vaccinations up to date and read up on pet care for senior dogs. There are many things owners can do to improve their pet’s quality of life beyond extra medications: special diets, specific exercises and modified play are among the steps owners can take.

By July 13, New York alone had reported 211 people dead from the excessive heat.

• On July 5, 1921, a trial begins in the case of seven Chicago White Sox baseball players accused of throwing the 1919 World Series. The conspiracy trial was just for show, and signed confessions from some of the players mysteriously

disappeared from police custody. The jury acquitted all of the accused players and then celebrated with them at a nearby restaurant.

• On July 2, 1938, Helen Wills Moody defeats Helen Jacobs to win her eighth Wimbledon singles title. Her record was not broken until Martina Navratilova won her ninth Wimbledon title in 1990.

Wills died in 1998 at the age of 92.

• On July 8, 1949, Wolfgang Puck, the celebrity chef and official caterer for the Academy Awards Governors Ball, is born in Austria. Puck’s restaurant Spago in West Hollywood, Calif., became famous for its gourmet pizza (which featured such toppings as caviar and smoked salmon) and its celebrity clientele.

• On July 6, 1971, Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, dies in New York City at the age of 69. Armstrong pioneered jazz improvisation and the style known as “swing.” He had many nicknames, including Satchmo, short for “Satchelmouth.”

• On July 7, 1983, Samantha Smith, an 11-year-old American girl, begins a two-week visit to the Soviet Union at the invitation of Soviet leader Yuri Andropov. He invited Smith after she wrote him a letter as part of a school project. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.
