My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin The finish line of the recent Sinister 7 Ultramarathon in Crowsnest Pass was an incredible place to be.

As a newcomer to the event, I wasn’t sure what to expect. When I arrived at 11 p.m. there were about 100 people gathered at the Coleman Sportsplex.

Things were pretty low-key at first. The food booth, manned by volunteers for the Boys and Girls Club of Crowsnest Pass and staff of the Bamboo Bistro, was a busy place, and event volunteers bustled around.

It didn’t take long for a bit of commotion to stir up near the finish line as an announcement was made that a runner wasn’t far off.

It had been over 16 hours since the race started in downtown Blairmore, and several teams had come in prior to my arrival.

It’s pretty amazing when you think about it – the Redline Overlords relay team of Camrose covered the 148-kilometre trail on a blistering hot day in course record time of 12 hours 4 minutes 56 seconds.

Mixed team Vertical Runner of Montana finished with a time of 12:20:03, and female team Speedy Beavers crossed the finish line at 15:42:42.

Kathy Wakaluk-Yanco, Ian Lowe-Wylde, Tracy Wakaluk, Connor Lowe-Wylde, Alex Wakaluk, Laura McGready and Mark Bennett made up Crowsnest Pass team Rock Gear and finished second in the mixed category with a time of 13:44:17.

Also of note is team Addicted to Dihydrogen Monoxide who placed 11th in the mixed category and 18th overall. The team was made up of Crowsnest Consolidated High School students Brian Koentages, Evan Rothlin, Megan Manzer, Carson Gunn, Mollie Pation, Ivy Friesen and Joshua Shultz. An excellent

showing for this young team!

Rather than the crowd thinning as seconds ticked by on the timer, more people continued to arrive and the excitement continued to grow.

Watching the runners, with lights on their heads, descend the hill to the finish line in the dark was really neat. They seemed so far away as they came over the top of the hill, then suddenly they were sprinting through the bright lights into the arms of their teammates.

When organizers announced that the first solo runner was about three kilometres from the finish, the buzz in the crowd picked up considerably.

Oleg Tabelev of Calgary approached the finish line with his arms raised in victory at 17:45:26 and the crowd went wild. I couldn’t fathom one person running the entire race. Organizer Brian Gallant greeted him with a hug and later passed him a bottle of champagne.

The adrenaline level of the crowd was contagious, and it was with reluctance that I headed for home at 1:45 a.m. I was impressed by the event as a whole, which appeared to run without a hitch.

The runners continued to cross the line, including local teams Wii Not Fit and Lame Ducks, and soloist Ryan Peebles who also had coached the CCHS team.

The event works because of the strong volunteer support from southern Alberta and beyond. Leslie Claringbull of Pincher Creek says it’s the best event she has volunteered for, and plans to be involved again next year.

Facebook comments are positive and grateful, and organizers Brian Gallant and Andrew Fairhurst are already working on next year’s race. It’s great to see another event shining a positive light on our corner of southwestern Alberta – well done!

The Breeze Mailbox Open House Waterton Everyone is invited to celebrate Parks Day at Waterton Lakes National Park, July 21.

The celebration will be centred next to the Heritage Centre. Starting at 1 p.m., visitors can enjoy free cake and lemonade.

There will also be a special performance called “It’s a Warden’s Life, in Song and Poetry” at 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Throughout the afternoon, visitors can participate in a variety of activities and demonstrations, including our popular GeoFreakZ GeoTrails activity.

Families can also pick up a copy of the park’s new Xplorers activity book. There are also guided hikes and theatre programs.

All activities are free with the park entry fee.

Parks Canada protects 167 national historic sites, 42 national parks and four national marine conservation areas.

These places comprise one of the world’s largest networks of heritage sites.

Every summer, we celebrate Parks Day by showcasing the contribution that they make to healthy and diverse ecosystems and making Canada’s history come alive.

ANGELS, continued from page 3 Esty has been Johanna’s caregiver for 27 years, and has always pushed her to fight.

Johanna acknowledges how difficult his role has been and is grateful for his strong support.

They considered liberation treatment, but knew of people who had gone overseas for the treatment without success.

Bud and Sue West had become friends through local MS meetings, and Sue made the connection for Johanna’s treatment in the States through Angels Within Us. Within two weeks, everything was arranged for treatment in Santa Anna, Calif.

Johanna’s friend Lucille Martin went along for support. “She was like my angel, she was like a mother, like a best friend,” Johanna says.

“Lucille needs credit. She spent hours and hours at the clinic waiting for me.”

On the first day, MRI and MRV tests were performed. The procedure itself took place on the second day.

Johanna was sedated but awake through the procedure, and felt some pain behind her ears when the angioplasty balloons were used to dilate her jugular vein.

“While they were doing this, I could feel my feet getting warm. They had felt like blocks of ice for 27 years,” Johanna says.

She had to stay in bed for the first day afterward, and on the next day had a follow-up appointment with a panel of doctors and nurses.

“I got up that morning and had strength and energy like I’d never felt,” she says. “The doctors asked me to show them how I felt and I did a happy dance for them. I started to cry – it was so overwhelming, it’s like I got my life back. The care I received was phenomenal!”

As Johanna speaks of the experience, tears well up in her eyes and you can hear the emotion in her voice. Her life has been changed and she is both excited and grateful.

“All I can think about is that thank you is not enough,” she says. “There are no words to express the gratitude, and I feel so humbled.

The gratitude is so great that when I think of the Angels Within Us I start crying. I feel like I have my life back, and it’s all thanks to them and the doctors in the States.”

Staying active is essential to Johanna’s longterm success with the treatment. Two months ago she would never have dreamed she would be able to power walk, swim, dance the polka until her heart was pounding or work in her garden again.

“My husband cried when I came out of the van and ran down the sidewalk into his arms,” Johanna says. “He never thought he’d see me like that again.”

“Every day I skip like a little girl and think, oh my gosh, I can skip!”

Driving Life in Prairie Wool

By Gordon B. Pitt I have known the spirits of so many settlers to have spoken to me in those quiet moments.

During my casual, lost, searching, meanderings on horseback, through green valleys and pine aromas.

This is the place I call heaven and have come here for solace, refuge and home in sage.

This is where I tend my herds, and lay claim to my cattle, in the old but still-practised ways.

The grassy plains, and rolling hills, tacitly meet the angry mountains under dark and thunderous clouds Such beauty to behold, away from houses, city skylines, horns, voices and crowds.

Although time becomes the ruler of all things to my brothers ... it seems to pass here one way or another.

I’m kind of partial to just letting it be ... and then it just seems to look after me.

What can’t be done today, can sometimes be done tomorrow ... but figure as you might ...

Must, more often than not, be finished without rest, during some of the night.

When finally I lay down, weary from work, the ensuing battle, of finding eyes difficult to shut ...

Before studying the glowing canopy of stars, light without light ... fireworks erupt.

Glowing campfire, the smell of worn leather and horse sweat, meet the sounds left over in the shadows.

It’s all too familiar ... what the heck was that? ... Ah, who knows?

Too tired to worry I begin the ritual of seamless sleep without pause or care.

Found under warm blankets, a shot of whisky, and crisp night air.

With a sudden morning rain tapered off, slicker with worn cuffs ... draped over my shoulders One last look to the fire, I ensure a bed, of cold

blackened wood, surrounded by boulders Cracked from the heat of this cowboy’s embers ... that many times over, dried my tack I guess it’s true what the Indians say ... the white man makes big fire ... then stands way back.

The agreeable company of a good horse, well worn saddle, make easy distance home.

Cattle surging forward as one ... seem to know the way ... and yet by nature they roam.

I need only watch the edges of a herd for the straggler or calf.

Holding gritty warm coffee, something floating around in it ... drinking without regard ... I smile ... no, laugh.

As I crest the hill and see our home ... old barns, corrals and fences, remind me of labours to come I like the thought of it and look forward to working on it some Painted barns, new corrals, would be nice this year, but we’ll see about the cattle price.

My boss makes those decisions and she can be tough but still nice, she’s my wife ...

I look back to the mountains and then again to our home ... is it just the way I saw it? ... Is it real?

When I was no more than a child ... in my dreams, I was here, on this horse, with these cattle in my field.

My joy, my boss, stands in the yard with bright apron ... the one she wears while making bread.

I can smell it baking from here; suddenly I would rather be at our table instead.

I reflect on this thought as I cross the last prairie wool.

Our home nestled in green valley, morning lazy smoke to blue sky ... from wood stove.

This could be heaven ... nowhere else in the world that I would rather be.

Than here ... In this cowboy’s life ... under this sky ... in the Prairie.

The Breeze Mailbox Speaking of roses If roses love being talked about, then they must have felt the vibrations coming from within the backyard last Thursday evening as 15 rosarians toured the Taylor rose garden.

Marilyn Monroe was there in her pastel peach wavy petals, looking so much like the frilly dress from a famous movie scene. Drop Dead Red has shocking red blooms. She just moved in and is new to the neighbourhood. Danielle’s foliage is lush and shiny, and the miniature blooms are a vivid pink.

Emily Carr is waiting her turn to add to the colourful palette, as is the clean and long-stemmed Therese Bugnet.

Barbra Streisand showed in colours of muted mauve and perfumed the air with a beautiful fragrance. Sweet Fairy was covered in tiny, light pink puffs of bloom.

Heather’s Rose – a mystery gift x two – was tall and topped with creamy yellow classic blooms.

Roses with masculine names occupy their own area of the garden – Harrison’s Yellow and Henry Hudson and other gents I have yet to meet.

I was attracted to the heavenly-scented Snow Pavement and Polareis. Both are hardy rugosa roses. The Mordens are there too. Morden Centennial and Morden Sunrise were both showing off their colourful blooms.

After the tour, the rosarians gathered in groups in the shady garden or on the sunny deck and enjoyed ice cream sundaes and iced tea. It was an evening full of laughter and learning – and, for those lucky roses, a chance to listen to it all.

Marvin Adrian Mardell 1935 - 2012

Mr. Marvin Adrian Mardell, of Coleman, Alta., beloved father of Greg Mardell and Lareina Valiquette, and grandfather of Kayla and Devin, passed away at the Crowsnest Pass Health Care Centre on July 8, 2012 at the age of 76 years.

Adrian was born on Dec. 17, 1935, in Smeaton, Sask., to proud parents Michael and Gertrude Mardell. He grew up loving farm life and continued in that field of endeavour until his late 20s, when he moved on to engage in hard-rock mining all over Canada, as well as in the Crowsnest Pass.

During this adventurous journey, he met Darlene Evans. They got married and were blessed with three fine children. For some 12 years they also ran a restaurant in Mission, B.C., in the late ’70s and early ’80s.

Adrian was blessed with many talents and abilities. He loved to sing and play his guitar. He developed particular skill in playing darts, and did well at many tournaments. He restored many broken-down vehicles to good working order and, in his youth, he did a lot of hunting and fishing.

He leaves behind to mourn his passing and to celebrate his life: his son, Greg Mardell of Coleman, and daughter, Lareina (Mark) Valiquette of Coleman; grandson, Devin Valiquette, and granddaughter, Kayla (Jamie Fisher) Valiquette; his ex-wife and good friend, Darlene Mardell of Coleman; brothers, Hubert Mardell of Grand Forks, B.C. and Alan Mardell of Creighton, Sask.; his sister, Evadnee (Allan) Wellygan of Vancouver; numerous nieces and nephews and extended family (many of whom reside in Saskatchewan).

Adrian was predeceased by: his parents, Michael and Gertrude Mardell; his dear son, Sheldon Tymon Mardell, and baby Trevor Mardell; and his brother Archie Mardell.

The memorial service honouring Adrian’s life was held on Monday, July 16, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel in Blairmore, with Rev. Jason Easterbrook officiating. Adrian’s cremated remains shall be laid to rest in the family’s section of the cemetery in Prince Albert, Sask.

On Highway 507, between Beaver Mines and Burmis, you’ve likely noticed a sign pointing you toward the Castle River Rodeo & Campground. If you pull in, you’ll find some lovely campsites nestled among mature trees on the bank of the Castle River.

The campsite has undergone significant upgrading this year, thanks to members of the Cowley Lions Club who lease and maintain the site.

Power was provided to 42 of the 70 camping spots last fall. While this may sound like a fairly simple thing to do, it was a big job.

This spring the Lions were hard at work again, this time developing 13 new spots along the river and planting trees.

“Our goal is to improve things for

family camping,” says Lions member Earl Johnson.

It wasn’t just Lions members who made things happen – friends of friends chipped in to help with the project.

Dave Barton of Weir Construction in Medicine Hat volunteered time and machinery, James MacKinnon of Cowley used his skid steer to do much of the backfilling, while Three Rivers Rental and Pat Dwyer Construction loaned equipment.

Grumpy’s Greenhouse dug holes, helped plant trees, and provided a skid steer to haul refuse away after cutting trees.

The MD of Pincher Creek donated 150 cubic metres of crushed gravel, and Alan and Teri Tapay donated $400 of pit run. Use of a semi gravel truck was also

donated anonymously.

“It’s a community deal,” Earl says.

“Without the volunteers and the companies getting involved, the Lions couldn’t have done it.”

The site is close to full, and on Canada Day campers took the initiative to hold a pancake breakfast which raised over $600 toward playground repairs.

“There are quite a few campers out there who work with us and they’re not Lions,” says Earl’s wife, Marion.

Marion is also a member of the Cowley Lions and has been actively involved with the campground upgrades.

She and Earl have a beautiful spot along the riverbank, and enjoy the serenity and camaraderie found less than a half hour from their home.

beginning back in the 1940s and ended about 30 years later, according to Earl. Now, only the faint outline of the racetrack is visible.

This section of Crown land is leased to the MD of Pincher Creek for recreational purposes, and has been re-leased to the Cowley Lions since about 1970.

At that time it was a well-known party area. Now it is an idyllic setting for a quiet weekend away from home.

Three camp hosts are available to assist visitors, collect fees and make sure all is under control.

“We provide a secure, family place,” says Earl.

Along with the camping sites, there is a large stockade which is often rented out for group events like grad parties, weddings and reunions.

Earl is a charter member of the Cowley Lions Club, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.

“We’re pretty good for younger members,” he says, adding that they are trying to get the younger members to take more on.

Laughter and learning

Fibre arts enthusiasts have gathered this week at Bloomin’ Inn near Pincher Creek for the annual Fibre Arts Week hosted by Laurel Francis.

There’s something for everyone, whether you’re a beginner or an old hand with the knitting needles. Workshops are offered for quilters, knitters and rug-hookers until July 22, with spots still available for those who might be interested in joining the fun.

“These are skills that give back to you, your whole life through,” says Doris Carlson, who also attended the event last year.

Laurel is all about making learning fun and, as you can see in the photo, she does a good job of it!

A Visual Conversation

The opening reception of A Visual Conversation at the Lebel Mansion Art Gallery last Thursday evening was well attended and a great display of the creative talent abundant in this corner of Alberta.

Presented by the Allied Arts Council of Pincher Creek, this new exhibit is worth the trek up the hill. The varied media represented at the show offer something for everyone.

Once inside, I was greeted by whimsical tea sets, handcrafted jewelry, carved birds, soft textiles, photography, an exquisite wooden table and a wide variety of creative canvases. There was even one cow that called out to me, in a painting by Anne McClelland.

Many of the southern Alberta artists were available to talk to and eager to discuss their art and how it became intertwined in their lives.

I learned the importance of banjos and storytelling from Larry Cromwell and, from

Barbara Amos, how art can be a way to diffuse anger.

Janet Barkwith said she loves working with copper and can “draw inspiration from anywhere.”

Karen Tamminga-Paton, mother of three and a teacher, said, “Artists read the art differently,” while explaining that this kind of show helps with the “generation of ideas.”

The variety of works embraced the beauty of nature found in local surroundings, from Sam Miller’s “Great Blue Heron” in wood to Heather Fletcher’s “Joy Tree” in clay.

The gathering was large enough that people spilled into the gift shop and outside onto the veranda to try to beat the heat of the day.

This display celebrates the splendid local talent of the area.

“The God Box”

by Mary Lou Quinlan (Greenleaf Book Group Press, $16.95) Reviewed by Rose M. Croke What if you could catch a glimpse of every hope -- no matter how big or small --your mother ever had for you and your loved ones? When her beloved mother dies, author Mary Lou Quinlan caught that miraculous glimpse when she found her mother’s “God Box,” a private stash of notes and prayers scribbled thoughtfully on scraps of paper written on behalf of family, friends and strangers.

Quinlan found not one, but 10 boxes, filled with hundreds of tiny prayers and wishes that spanned the last 20 years of her mother’s life.

A devout Catholic, Quinlan’s mother, Mary Finlayson, was unabashedly committed to God. Faith was her compass, and she entrusted her most intimate worries and wishes to the sanctity of her

God Box. When friends and relatives called her with their problems, she would tell them, “You’re in my God Box.” Her unwavering faith and support came with no strings attached.

These humble containers were a source of great solace and comfort to her grieving middle-aged daughter. So much so, they inspired her to learn to ask for help from a higher power as her mother had taught her through example and deed.

With its beautiful essays and anecdotes on faith, love, compassion, aspiration and perseverance, “The God Box” shows the depth and broad reach of one woman’s faith and her daughter’s challenge in keeping the faith and learning to let go. Through all their trials and tribulations, both of these strong women had a partner in life -- each other.

By Steve Becker ACCIDENTLY ON PURPOSE One way to describe a poor bridge player is to say that he plays so badly, he even trumps his partner’s aces.

Sometimes, though, trumping partner’s ace is absolutely necessary to achieve the best result.

Consider this deal where South got to three spades on the sequence shown.

North’s three-spade bid was clearly wrong, as he was in effect punishing his partner for competing against a partscore.

South had previously limited his values by overcalling with one spade, so he could hardly have a hand that would make a game opposite North’s mediocre values.

West led his singleton club, and East started the defense on the right path when he took the king and returned a trump. Declarer won with dummy’s ten and led the queen of clubs. East played the ace, and it was at this

point that West trumped his partner’s ace and led a second round of trumps!

As a result, South went down one. He could ruff his third club in dummy, but he could not avoid losing his remaining club to East. All told, he lost three clubs, a heart and a diamond.

Had West failed to trump his partner’s ace at trick three, South would have made the contract, trumping two clubs in dummy instead of one to finish with nine tricks.

The hand illustrates the importance of keeping an open mind on defense.

All too often a declarer is allowed to conduct his business without interference and so achieve what appears to be a normal result. To piggyback off an idea I got from Annie Potts when I interviewed her earlier this year, I think Lifetime would be remiss if they didn’t see the potential of grabbing up the recently canceled ABC show “GCB” and pair it with “Devious Maids.” As Annie told me: “If we were paired with ‘Devious Maids,’ we’d have the great American equivalent of ‘Upstairs, Downstairs’ -- the rich and righteous in Dallas and the maids of Beverly Hills. Vintage Jewelry Q: I have some nice pieces of vintage jewelry, and I would like to determine how much they are worth. -- Susan, Dubuque, Iowa A: Since gold has risen dramatically in value in recent years, most jewelry price guides are out-of-date. With that said, there are two that will give you a general idea of the current retail marketplace. Warman’s Vintage Jewelry: Identification and Price Guide

Especially helpful is the section about the different settings and metals and history of rhinestones, including their cuts and shapes.

A: No, no and maybe. Your first two titles would be of no interest to a book collector. The “Avant Garde” magazine was mostly notable because of the graphic designs of Herb Lubalin. The first issue was published in January of 1968 and 13 editions followed. I found more than 150 Avant Garde magazines posted on eBay, most with no bids or selling in the $10 to $15 range. As with most collectibles, there are always exceptions. *** Q: I have a James Hoffa wristwatch and

a Teamsters belt bucket. Could you tell me how much they are worth? -- Dee, Godfrey, Ill. A: I contacted a Hoffa collector who said the watch was probably worth about $50 and the buckle somewhat less. Apparently, the Teamsters issued several buckle designs, and the value would depend on which one you have.

This six-hour miniseries takes a bloody page out of American history and produces a decent scripted drama with real actors.

Devil Hatfield (Kevin Costner) and Randall McCoy (Bill Paxton) served together in the Confederate Army. When the war ends, a feud starts up as McCoy suspected Hatfield of leaving duty too early.

Things spiral downward from there, as blood begets blood and the cycle of vengeance reaches down through the generations. It may not be the most historically accurate -- the details of the feud are murky to begin with -- but it makes for good drama.

“Detention” (R) -- On the topic of annoying teenagers, somebody sure tried to make a witty, off-the-wall, fast-paced send-up of high-school dramas, and wound up with this scatterbrained mess.

It gets points for originality and visual panache, but only partial credit because it’s just not there yet. A masked slasher starts killing kids in a colorful high school full of fast-talking suburbanites, and things only get more self-referential and difficult to follow (much less laugh at) from there.

Slurp and Savor Tasty Mango Salsa “The mangoes are falling,” chanted a chorus of excited young schoolkids in Haitian Creole while I navigated a rocky, muddy path in Haiti recently as a program volunteer with global health organization Medical Teams International (www.medicalteams.org).

Sure enough, within seconds, a large, rosy-red and orange mango from a canopy of trees overhead landed with a thud right next to me.

I quickly learned the kids’ way of biting into the outer skin (after I washed it), removing it with my fingers and then devouring the fruit slurp by slurp, first one half and then the other.

There’s nothing quite as delicious as a tree-ripened mango.

Now in season, beautiful vitamin- and mineral-rich mangoes are available at our local stores at reasonable prices.

At snack time, remove the peel with a sharp knife and serve your kids long slices or chunks on a plate. Add other tropical fruits such as pineapple and papaya for additional authentic tastes of the Caribbean.

For a highlight at your next barbecue, dice a mango and toss together with easy-to-find summer ingredients for

this fresh and tangy mango salsa. It’s delicious as an accompaniment to grilled chicken breasts or fish such as halibut and salmon. Serve it as a side, or spoon it on top of the chicken and fish. It’s yummy with grilled shrimp, too.

Little League Elbow Is Overuse Injury DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My 12-year-old son is something of a phenomenon when it comes to baseball, and he loves playing the game. I haven’t pushed him into it.

He’s a particularly awesome pitcher, and his coaches are amazed at what he can do.

I practice with him every day. He now has a sore elbow in his pitching arm. I think it might be Little League elbow. My wife blames me, because, she says, I overwork him. I need some guidelines on how much throwing is too much. Thanks. -R.C. ANSWER: The elbow is a site that’s a potential calamity for the immature skeleton. Children have vulnerable spots in their bones called growth plates. These bone parts haven’t yet become bone. They permit elongation of bones. One of those sites is the elbow.

the same thing, let the boy’s throwing arm hang down with his palm facing forward. Feel the area of the elbow next to the body. That’s where Little League elbow makes itself known.

It’s an overuse injury, meaning the boy is throwing too many pitches with too little rest. The incidence of elbow pain in young baseball players is quite high -- 20 percent to 40 percent. It can be avoided with a sensible program that limits the number of throws per day.

First, your son should not throw until the pain leaves. Then he can resume throwing, but gradually do so. Eventually he can work up to the Little League’s standards for pitching for 12-year-olds. If a boy or girl of this age throws 66 pitches in one game, the child needs four days of rest -- no throwing; if it’s 51 to 65 pitches, three days of rest are required; 30 to 50 pitches, two rest days; 21 to 35 pitches, one rest day.

In practice, he should be limited to 20 pitches if he throws daily. It he throws more, he should follow the schedule for the number of pitches thrown in a game.

If your boy’s pain lasts a week, have the family doctor examine him. If he really has Little League elbow, healing can take six to 12 weeks. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you kindly tell me what is the appropriate time interval for a repeat colonoscopy? I have different information from doctors. I had my

first colonoscopy when I was 51.

The doctor who performed it said I didn’t need another until I was 61. A different doctor says I need a repeat at 56. Which is it? -- E.P. ANSWER: If no polyps were found on your first exam and if you have no close relatives who have had colon cancer, then the usual time for the next exam is 10 years. Otherwise, it is five years.

Tropical Sorbet Loaf A slice of this looks like a summer sunset or pretty sand art made on a seaside boardwalk. The best part: It’s really easy -- just scoop and freeze.

Your kids can help.

1 pint raspberry sorbet or strawberry sorbet, softened 1 pint mango or passion fruit sorbet, softened 1 pint coconut sorbet, softened 1 pint orange or peach sorbet, softened Shaved coconut, fresh raspberries and fresh mint leaves, for garnish 1. Spray 9- by 5-inch loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray. Line pan with plastic wrap.

2. Using 2-inch (1/4 cup) ice cream scoop, arrange 8 alternating scoops of sorbet (2 scoops of each sorbet) in 1 layer in pan. Place plastic wrap on sorbet scoops and press mixture down to flatten and eliminate air pockets; remove plastic wrap.

3. Repeat to make 2 more layers, alternating sorbets within each layer and from layer to layer, and making sure to press mixture down each time.

Cover and freeze until firm, at least 6 hours.

4. To serve, uncover pan and invert onto platter. Wrap towels dampened with warm water on bottom and sides of pan for about 20 seconds to slightly soften sorbet. Remove pan and plastic wrap. Garnish loaf with coconut, raspberries, and mint. Makes 16 servings.

Polynesian Drumsticks

1. In blender, puree pineapple with its juice and remaining ingredients except drumsticks. Spoon 1/2 cup pineapple mixture into large self-sealing plastic bag; reserve remaining pineapple mixture for grilling. Add drumsticks to bag, turning to coat. Let stand at room temperature 15 minutes.

2. Remove drumsticks from bag; discard bag with marinade. Place drumsticks on grill over medium heat and cook 15 minutes, turning over once.

Cook drumsticks 10 to 15 minutes longer, or until drumsticks are golden and juices run clear when thickest part is pierced with tip of knife, brushing twice with reserved pineapple mixture and turning occasionally. Serves 4.

not only inefficient, it’s a quick way to break the thermostat.

In fact, that may already have happened. Your mother-in-law is probably controlling the thermostat this way because she is not getting the comfortable temperature she wants when she sets the thermostat in the typical “comfortable” range of 65 F to 75 F. This may have happened from turning the control gauge too far left or right, or it may simply be an old thermostat in need of replacement.

Instead of insisting that she set the thermostat in one place and leave it alone, talk to her about bringing in a heating and cooling contractor to inspect the entire air conditioning system, including the thermostat. And try to persuade her to have the old thermostat replaced with a more accurate, programmable electronic thermostat. The cost savings that result from regularly maintaining a cooling system and keeping the temperature in a comfortable range can be significant.

And a programmable thermostat can remove one chore from her to-do list: It can lower or raise the

interior temperature of the house at set times, without her having to manually set the thermostat.

HOME TIP: During the peak cooling months of summer, change your air conditioner’s air filter once a month.

PHOTO CREDIT: stock.xchg photo Grill a Summer Pizza If you love fresh vegetables and adore pizza, why not combine them on the grill? The best part is that you can change this recipe and use whatever vegetables you have on hand. This pizza is so good you might want to devour the whole thing!

Although traditional Neapolitan pizza dough is made only with flour, yeast, salt and oil, the recipe below has an American twist. This unique recipe uses bread flour for strength, all-purpose flour for tenderness and cornmeal for flavor and texture. It makes a delicious, slightly crunchy dough for any pizza recipe, but especially for vegetable toppings. If you don’t want to make your own pizza dough, you can purchase commercially made dough, dust your board with some cornmeal and then roll out the dough so that the bottom will be coated with cornmeal to give it a similar crisp texture.

You can use any combination of the vegetables below on your pizza.

SUMMER VEGETABLE PIZZA 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 teaspoon sea salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1 medium zucchini, cut lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices 1 medium yellow squash, cut lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices 1 large bell pepper, stem and seeds removed and cut in half 1 large purple Globe eggplant, stem removed and cut into rounds 1 large Portabello mushroom or 4 small mushrooms, wiped free of debris, stem trimmed or removed 3 plum tomatoes, cut in half 6 green onions, root ends removed 4 pieces of asparagus, stems trimmed Cooking oil spray 1 (12-inch) pizza crust or packaged pizza crust

(see recipe and tips below) 1/4 cup (1 ounce) finely grated pecorino Romano cheese 2 tablespoons thinly sliced fresh basil 1/2 teaspoon finely chopped fresh oregano 1. Prepare a medium-hot fire using charcoal or gas grill. Meanwhile, using a large bowl, soak the vegetables in cold water for about 30 minutes before you grill them to keep them from drying out. Drain and pat vegetables dry.

2. Combine oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, pepper flakes, zucchini, yellow squash, bell pepper, eggplant, mushrooms, tomatoes, green onions and asparagus in the bowl, tossing gently to coat.

Place vegetable mixture on grill rack coated with cooking spray. Grill 2 minutes on each side or until tender.

3. Lightly coat pizza crust with cooking spray; grill 1 minute on each side or until lightly toasted. Arrange vegetable mixture over crust.

Sprinkle with pecorino Romano cheese. Grill 5 minutes or until thoroughly heated. Remove from grill; sprinkle with basil and oregano.

CORNMEAL PIZZA DOUGH Pizza dough doesn’t freeze very well, although it can be made one day ahead, allowed to partially rise, then refrigerated overnight for use the following day, or even punched down again and kept chilled for use the second day. Allow the dough to come to room temperature before rolling or stretching into a circle or tongue shape. * 1/2 pound (2 cups minus 2 tablespoons) unbleached all-purpose flour * 1/2 pound (2 cups) unbleached bread flour * 1/4 pound (3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons) stoneground yellow cornmeal * 2 teaspoons fine sea salt * 1/2 cup lukewarm water * 1 tablespoon honey

* 1 (1/4-ounce) package (21/2 teaspoons) active dry yeast * 3/4 cup lukewarm milk * 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: all-purpose flour, bread flour, cornmeal and salt.

2. In the bowl of a standing mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, whisk together water, honey and yeast, and allow mixture to proof for 10 minutes or until bubbling. Beat in milk and oil. Beat in flour mixture, then switch to dough hook and beat on low speed for about 10 minutes, or until dough is smooth and elastic. The finished pizza dough should be soft and slightly sticky: You should be able to press a finger into the dough and pull it away cleanly after it sticks briefly.

3. Transfer dough to a lightly oiled bowl, turning it so all the dough is coated with oil. Cover with plastic film and set aside in a warm place.

Allow dough to rise at warm room temperature until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.

4. Divide dough into 2 or 3 portions and form into smooth rounds. Roll out or stretch out by hand into desired size: 12 to 14 inches is common. Makes 2 pounds of dough, enough for 2 large or 3 smaller pizzas.

Lavender May Calm Hyperactive Dogs DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read on an Internet forum that lavender can help calm nervous and hyperactive dogs. Is this the case? I know that some plants are toxic to pets. -- Jenna C., Los Angeles DEAR JENNA: Lavender, or the scent of lavender, has been touted as a natural way to help calm down dogs. Experts advocating

natural treatments recommend placing a few drops of the essential oil on a cloth, a favorite blanket or a cotton ball and placing it near the dog. (Make sure your dog doesn’t ingest it.) I’ve seen recommendations to place the essential oil directly on a dog’s coat, but this can cause skin irritation, so you should avoid that.

For cats, however, lavender is a more dangerous proposition.

Ingesting the essential oil or accidentally getting it on their skin can cause stomach upset and, in larger doses, liver toxicity.

It’s true that some plants, including herbs, are dangerous for both dogs and cats. Lily plants should not be in a house with cats, as they are very poisonous. Eucalyptus plants and essential oil should be kept away from pets; the plant leaves can cause vomiting if ingested, and the oil can make cats

quite ill.

A list of plants that are poisonous for cats and dogs can be found at earthclinic.com. Before bringing a new plant into the house or before applying an herbal or aromatherapy remedy to your pet, do your homework to make sure it’s not toxic. Your veterinarian also can provide expert advice on herbs and plants to avoid.
