My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin Everyone I know has phobias and fears that make their blood pressure rise.

I believe I’ve come by my fear of bugs and flying things quite naturally – a little bit of an inheritance from my mom.

I can’t stand the ticklish feeling of a fly walking across my arm, big fluttery moths have been known to make me scream, and a bat will send me running for cover.

I took a leery peek into a bat house at the home of Dave Nowakowski and Joan Glaister a few weeks back, and can’t say I was disappointed to find no one home!

I understand that bats are insectivores and handy to have around, but couldn’t imagine choosing to have them live so close by.

Joan and Dave genuinely love the little critters, but I envisioned them flying up to the bat house with evil grins on their little faces, and cringed.

Those who know me well are aware of my squeamishness around bugs in general. It’s made me a target for practical jokes and teasing for as long as I can remember.

A few eyebrows were raised last week when I announced I was going to check out the bat research happening at Waterton Lakes National Park, for a story.

As the time drew closer, my mind was busy thinking of excuses for bailing on the excursion. Despite coming up with some real doozies, in the end I gathered my gear and my fear, because my daughter Jaiden and her friend Claire were anxiously waiting to go along with me.

Pressure to conform can be a good thing.

It was a remarkable experience and I’m glad I pushed past my anxiety to take it in.

Once the nets were set and darkness began

to fall, it was time to turn on our headlamps.

It was a only a few moments before the moths began congregating around my head.

Oh, how I wanted to shriek and run for cover!

But the same pressure that pushed me to make the trip in the first place, helped me to stifle my scream and flick the first of many moths off my face.

When the first bat of the evening was netted, I surprised myself even more.

“It’s beautiful” were the words that slipped out of my mouth before I could stop them.

Jaiden glanced at me with an astounded look on her face that quickly turned into a smile.

The girls and I were enthralled by the little flying mammals. Before I knew it, I was casually brushing the dreaded fluttering moths away without a second thought.

We spent most of our time with research assistant Thomas Hill, who shared educational bits and entertained us at the same time, as we walked back and forth between the nets until 2:30 a.m.

The bats and the project itself were fascinating, and Thomas’s enthusiasm was contagious. I was quick to agree when the girls asked if they could help out one more night.

I took a huge step out of my comfort zone, met some amazing people, learned a ton and had the privilege of volunteering for an international scientific study.

I also learned that my fear of bats was based on silly stereotypes, and that a moth fluttering in my face needn’t be more than an inconvenience. How cool is that?

I might still scream on occasion when a moth surprises me, but now will always look to the night sky for signs of our furry, winged friends.

Getting batty at Waterton

By Shannon Robin With storm clouds gathering overhead, Canadian bat biologist Dr. Cori Lausen, research assistant Thomas Hill and several volunteers hustled to erect mist nets last Wednesday evening.

Clouds were moving in two directions, and it was difficult to determine if the lightning was heading to our location at Marquis Hole in Waterton Lakes National Park.

Every aspect of setting the nets is strategic.

After choosing a suitable habitat, Cori scouts out the location for potential bat flyways and determines how many stacks high each net should be.

If the nets go up too early, birds will get caught in them, so the minutes at dusk are precious.

Parks Canada employees Cate Reynolds and Jarret Hardisty helped Thomas set up the nets, some as high as 24 feet, in locations near the lakefront and along the roadway openings.

Sporting hip waders, Cori set up a net in a large pond with help from her husband and fellow biologist, Michael Proctor.

Nets in six locations were in place before the rain, lightning and crashing thunder sent us scrambling for shelter. Research time is priceless, so we were grateful for the storm’s quick passing.

Soon we were walking back and forth between the nets in the darkness, sweeping them with our headlamps and seeking signs of activity.

Thomas was full of enthusiasm as he told us what the night might have in store. He shared his knowledge with teenage volunteers Claire Madsen and Jaiden Panchyshyn, and with me, in a manner that was both engaging and entertaining.

“Ecology is one of the biggest vested interests for the public right now, whether they know it or not,” he said in a serious moment. “White nose syndrome is the biggest ecological crisis out there.”

Thomas and Cate spoke of catching a hoary bat the night before. Having caught over 1,000 bats in the past 10 years, this was the first hoary bat Thomas had seen. We were excited at the prospect of seeing a bat that hisses and carries on when captured.

Although she is a Parks Canada employee, Cate’s time with the bat survey is volunteered at the end of her work day, all because she’s “super keen on bats.”

Cate explained that each bat species emits different sound frequencies. So, through the use of computer scanning, they can tell a species is present even if they aren’t successful in catching one.

Next to the triple-high net, a computer played distress calls of the little brown bats. It has been suggested that hoary bats will prey on the little browns, and that hypothesis was being tested.

The first bat to find a net was indeed a hoary, and the show he put on as Cori and Thomas gently removed his wings and body from the fine netting was spectacular. Once it was free, Cori held the hissing mammal out for us to see before popping him into a bat bag.

After being removed from the nets, the bats were held in cloth bags for about an hour. This gave them time to calm down and to void. The

BATTY, continued from page 3 bags were marked with species information and capture time, then held inside the jackets of team members to keep the bats warm.

Cate had several squirming bags of bats tucked into her jacket at any given time during the night, as more found themselves tangled in the mist nets.

Once an hour had passed, the hoary bat was first up for processing. Cori examined each bat and recorded the species, sex, age classification, reproductive condition, forearm length and weight. She also noted any anomalies like ear mites or tapeworms.

Great care was taken with each feisty little bat. For each one removed from a net and examined, the researchers were bitten multiple times. Sharply blowing into a bat’s face would get it to open its mouth and release its bite. Only those with current rabies vaccinations were allowed to handle them.

In the darkness of a cloudy night, we continued checking the nets for captive bats.

Claire and Jaiden were pleased to deliver to Cori the first Myotis evotis (long-earred bat) caught in the study.

The hours passed quickly, and soon it was time to take down the nets. Claire and Jaiden were great helpers, rolling nets and searching with their headlamps for guy lines in the dark shrubbery.

A second journey to the park for the last night of the survey saw us trampling our way through armpit-high timothy grass in a completely different habitat, near Blakiston beaver pond.

Cori spent most of her time at the water net, where she contended with predaceous water beetles along with a steady catch of bats.

She doesn’t seem to be afraid of anything!

Those who were able to handle the bats were kept busy removing them from the mist nets, and almost everyone had wriggling bags of bats tucked into the warmth of their jackets.

Because a large storm was heading our way, the nets were hastily taken down around 1 a.m. The last of the gear was hauled up the hill just as the rain began to pour.

With 20 bats to process, we travelled down the road to a camp kitchen to set up shop.

Lightning flashed around us and thunder boomed in the background as the bats were examined and returned to their bags for a car ride back to the area we had removed them from.

Each bat had unique characteristics, and on that last night, six of the seven known species in the park were captured and released. We watched and listened as Cori and Waterton ecosystem scientist Barb Johnston worked together to process the bats.

On several pages of Cori’s website, www.batsRus.ca, you’ll find this quote: “Fundamental to conservation of biodiversity is knowing what species exist in an area.”

This correlates with what Parks Canada hopes to achieve by studying bats in the

Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park through both mist netting and acoustics.

“The parks have been here for a long time, but we know remarkably little about bats,” Barb says. “They often get left out, because out of sight is out of mind.”

The point of the survey wasn’t to try to count the bats. “With the threat of white nose syndrome coming west, we thought it was important to do a survey to know for sure what bat species call Waterton home, as well as what areas of the park they hang out in,” Barb says.

“Bats are really, really hard to quantify,” she adds.

The different species of bats found in Waterton are the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus), big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus), eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis), hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus), long-earred bat (Myotis evotis), long-legged bat (Myotis volans) and the silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans). The red and hoary bats were discovered in the park as part of last summer’s research, along with several maternal colonies of little browns.

Bats are not the evil creatures of folklore. They are elusive and mysterious, but they play a positive role in our ecosystem. A bat can eat up to its own weight each night in insects, and they are typically the bugs we consider pests. Bats also assist with pollination and seed distribution.

Contrary to popular myths, bats are not blind, and generally don’t bother people.

It’s amazing to watch them in flight at dusk, and up close they are beautiful despite their nasty teeth!

Already present in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, white nose syndrome has been wiping out bat colonies in eastern North America for six years, and is changing the balance of the ecosystem.

Damage from the skin fungus is extensive, with mortality estimates at over six million. There is currently nothing known that will stop the disease.

“There’s no gap in bat distribution, so there’s no reason to believe it won’t get here,” Barb says. “We don’t know what will happen when it does get here.”

Acoustic monitors have been set up in two locations at the park as a proactive measure. Tracking the activity level of different species over time will help indicate the impact of white nose syndrome when it reaches southern Alberta.

“I’m hopeful that having your eggs in multiple baskets will afford them some protection,” Barb says.

This is the second and final year of the survey project, and Cori’s report should be available early next year.

Doors Open in the Pass

A positive view Members of Creation Nation, a local youth project, created this artistic piece to reflect their perspectives of living in Crowsnest Pass. The mural is mounted on the Crowsnest Pass Renovations building in downtown Bellevue and is attracting the attention of all who travel down the main street. It is a visual reminder of how youth view themselves and their role in the community.

Beginning Thursday, Crowsnest Pass will be buzzing with activity for five days as the Doors Open and Heritage Festival 2012 edition runs its course.

There’s no shortage of fun activities to take in, and there’s definitely something for everyone.

The Summer Sun Street Festival in Bellevue begins at 5 p.m. Thursday, featuring live music, over 40 vendors, contests, games, food and refreshments. An old-style fashion show will be part of the fun and a highlight will be the performance by Canadian singer-songwriter Maria Dunn.

The 14th annual Crowsnest Country Market is Saturday in Coleman and has a great lineup of vendors, a live auction, live music and a concession all day. It’s set at Flumerfelt Park, so visitors can also enjoy the water park on what is forecast to be a hot day.

You also won’t want to miss the teddy bears picnic at the Coleman Museum Saturday morning. This event is always a big hit.

Also taking place Saturday morning is the Crowsnest Pass pottery sale and history display at the Sportsplex in Coleman.

Saturday night you can support the Bellevue Underground Mine and enjoy dinner and entertainment by the Dino Martinis.

Between the larger events you can also take

in the photo contest exhibit at the Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery or the quilt display at the museum in Coleman.

Tours are available of many local landmarks, and you can enjoy guided flower walks, bird watching, garden tours, hikes and bus tours.

For the more adventurous there are mad science workshops, and a movie by starlight in Bellevue Sunday night.

Cathy Pisony and Fred Bradley teamed up about seven years ago to organize the Crowsnest Pass Doors Open and Heritage Festival.

They felt a weekend full of events would be a great way to attract a significant number of visitors to the area, and would be beneficial to all the small groups trying to attract people to their events.

“The whole point is to get people to come and stay,” Cathy says.

The committee is able to get grant assistance for marketing which is a huge help. Signs and banners are everywhere, and Cathy says the event has been successful at drawing visitors from Medicine Hat, Lethbridge and Calgary.

Come out this weekend, enjoy the sun, and explore Crowsnest Pass.

Natural History Events Doors Open & Heritage Festival Birding Walk

Looking for the Old Maude sign The Crowsnest Heritage Initiative information sign about Old Maude, in front of the old mine steam locomotive on main street Blairmore, across from the post office, has gone missing.

“The sign disappeared sometime between Thursday, July 19 and Friday, July 20,” stated Crowsnest Heritage volunteer Ian McKenzie.

Anyone knowing the whereabouts of the missing sign is asked to contact Mr. Mckenzie at 403-562-8829.

The sign was erected by the Crowsnest Heritage Initiative Society in 2010 at a cost of approximately $750.

The society’s signage program was developed to complement the awardwinning Crowsnest Heritage Driving Route.

The objective of the driving route and comprehensive signage program is to celebrate our incredible Crowsnest Pass history, with three goals: 1. To increase the local and travelling public’s awareness of our rich heritage.

2. To promote conservation of our heritage resources.

3. To increase tourism by developing a historic driving route to get the travelling public off Highway 3, to discover the rich heritage along the main streets and in the five major historic communities that form the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass.

The Crowsnest Heritage Initiative is a volunteer organization that has been successful in obtaining grants from Alberta Lotteries to carry out the signage program.

We are hopeful that the sign will be located, saving the cost of replacing it.

Heritage Acres celebrates family Every August long weekend, Heritage Acres near Pincher Creek hosts its annual show, and the entire site comes to life.

The theme of the 25th anniversary show is The Year of the Pioneer Family.

This winter a call went out for people to submit family histories, and an impressive number of presentations are already adorning the walls of the main display hall.

Several displays have been put together by families who have been in the area for more than 100 years, depicting life then and now, and the rich history of our area.

General manager Bill Kells expects more histories will come in before the weekend.

“We’re honouring and celebrating our early pioneers,” he says.

A highlight of the show this year is a visit from the recently restored BIG 4 tractor from the Reynolds-Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin.

The machine was used by both the Kettles and Cook families in the early 1900s, and this is its first return to Pincher Creek since its restoration.

The annual show is more than an invitation to view the agricultural museum. It’s an opportunity to view the museum in action.

“It’s kind of fun when everything comes to life,” Bill says. “It’s an opportunity for the club to educate present and future generations about agricultural history.”

The sawmill and grain elevator will be operating, and much of the equipment that usually sits on display will be fired up to provide field demonstrations.

If you’ve ever wondered what pioneer farm life was like, this is a perfect opportunity to see how the horse- and steam-powered equipment worked. You might even get the opportunity to lend a hand.

The popular parade of power will run at 1:30 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, featuring horses, cars and tractors. Tractor pulls all three days will also demonstrate the power of these large pieces of machinery.

Saturday and Sunday morning both start out with a pancake breakfast, and meals are available on-site all weekend – there will even be homemade pie!

All display buildings will be open, so you can watch the model train, enjoy the beauty of sunlight shining through stained glass windows in the church, marvel at Crystal Village, view the quilt display and shop at the Heritage Mall.

REO fans can check out Joe and Lynn Asuchak’s collection which includes cars used in the movies Paschendaele, Johnny Dangerously and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

Heritage Acres is located northeast of Pincher Creek, off Highway 3 on secondary Highway 785.

It is approximately nine kilometres to the site. Look for the grain elevator to your right.

Livingstone Ladies picnic The Livingstone Ladies, along with family and friends, gathered for their annual picnic last week. Karen Poulsen, shown ladling a cup of coffee from the campfire, has been with the club longest. Next year the club will celebrate 100 years, and Karen will celebrate 70 years as a member. Watch for the story next week!

“So Far Away”

by Meg Mitchell Moore (Reagan Arthur Books, $25.99) Reviewed by Ealish Waddell “So Far Away” is a story of three very different women, separated by age and time but who still have something to teach one another.

Kathleen is a middle-age archivist, widowed and lonely. Still aching from the disappearance of her troubled only child, she throws herself into helping others research their family histories while trying not too dwell too much on her own.

Into her life walks Natalie, a sullen young teen needing help with a school project deciphering an old journal she found in her basement. Natalie is a complicated person, gleaming with intelligence but secretly cracking under terrible burdens: her parents’ divorce, her mother’s depression, her best friend’s betrayal.

The third woman is Bridget, a young Irish immigrant struggling to make a new life in America. Bridget

appears only within the pages of the old journal, but it is her nearly century-old tale that brings Kathleen and Natalie together.

All of these women are haunted in some way. As a lowly servant in the 1920s, Bridget lives surrounded by what she longs for but is constantly reminded she cannot have. By Steve Becker THE EXPLORATORY APPROACH It’s easy enough to make four hearts on this deal if you look at all four hands. You lose two spades and a diamond, but you don’t lose a trump trick because you finesse against East’s queen.

If you don’t see the East-West cards, however, your task is much more difficult. With nine cards in the suit, you might decide to play the A-K of trumps and so go down one.

How do you resolve troublesome problems of this sort? Well, the fact is that you’re not expected to guess the location of a missing queen all the time -- just most of the time.

In the actual case, declarer had no trouble making the contract. West led the king of spades, overtaken by East with the ace. East returned the jack to West’s queen, and West continued with the ten of spades, ruffed by de-

clarer after East discarded a club.

Instead of tackling trumps immediately, which seems the natural thing to do, South embarked on a method of play that he hoped would shed more light on the location of the missing queen. He cashed the A-K-Q of clubs and A-K of diamonds, then exited with a diamond, won by East with the queen.

At this point, declarer had accumulated all the information he needed to solve the trump problem. West had shown up with six spades, three diamonds and three clubs, and therefore could not have started with more than one trump. So when East returned a club at trick ten, South ruffed it in dummy, cashed the king of trumps and then finessed the jack with 100 percent assurance that it would win the trick. “Hick” (R) -- By all accounts, this should have been a really good movie. The director, Derick Martini, showed hints of skill in his last movie (“Lymelife”), the cast is good, and the script was written by the author of the book that was being adapted.

Alas, “Hick” is tough to watch and doesn’t have much payoff.

Luli (Chloe Moretz) is all of 13 years old when she leaves her drunkard parents with nothing but some cash and a handgun in her purse. She meets a creepy cowboy named Eddie (Eddie Redmayne) and a vapid cocaine-addicted young lady (Blake Lively.) From there, Luli just keeps running into the same people and in worsening circumstances. We don’t get any true glimpse into her character or anything meaningful. Just oodles of creepiness.

DASH to Lower Blood Pressure DEAR DR. DONOHUE: You’ve written about the DASH diet in the past.

The directions for it are quite general.

Can you provide an itemized list of what is good and what is bad to eat?

It makes things simpler for me. -- F.L. ANSWER: The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) doesn’t involve a detailed listing of good and bad foods. It’s a general approach that identifies the food groups that are best for lowering blood pressure. You get to pick foods from those groups that appeal to you.

That’s one of the beauties of the diet: It permits many choices.

Grains are one of the major groups in the diet. Grains include products made from wheat, barley, rye, oats and other such cereal grains, even grains that aren’t familiar to our diet.

Every day, people should eat seven to eight servings of grain foods. A serving is a slice of bread, 1 ounce of cereal, or half a cup of cooked rice (brown), pasta or cereal.

Peach-Raspberry Crisp Peaches and raspberries harmonize perfectly in this summer crisp from chef Bobby Flay.

1 lemon 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 3 tablespoons Demerara or brown sugar 1/2 cup granulated sugar 3 tablespoons granulated sugar 10 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted 6 ripe peaches, peeled and halved 1 pint raspberries 1/4 cup cornstarch 1/8 teaspoon salt Whipped cream or ice cream 1. From lemon, grate 1 tablespoon peel; squeeze 3 tablespoons juice. In large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, Demerara sugar, 3 tablespoons granulated sugar and lemon peel; blend in butter until small and large clumps form. Refrigerate 15 minutes.

2. Preheat oven to 375 F. 3. Cut peaches into 1/4-inch-thick slices. In bowl, toss peaches, berries, cornstarch, salt, lemon juice and 1/2

cup granulated sugar. Let stand 15 minutes.

4. In 2-quart ceramic baking dish, spread fruit. Top with crumbs. Bake 40 to 50 minutes or until filling is bubbling. Cool 30 minutes. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream.

While watching the news streamed on my computer is OK, I’d like to pick up local stations on my TV. How can I do that? -- Chuck F., New Hampshire A: Today’s over-the-air TV transmissions are entirely digital, a change mandated by the government a couple of years back. The old “analog” TV transmissions were switched off in 2010, something that owners of old tube televisions who try to pick up signals with their old antennae are painfully aware of.

TV has a built-in digital antenna. If not, there are several HD antennas on the market. If you live in an area where TV signals are traditionally faint, you’ll absolutely need one of these. They start at around $45 and go up in price, but the plus side is that you won’t pay any more money for TV signals once the antenna is up. At least one brand of HD antenna was designed to be set up inside your home, but there are other brands specifically made to be set up outside or on the roof. Outdoor antennas can pick up signals up to 50 miles away in most cases, as long as there aren’t too many obstructions like hills or other buildings between your home and the transmission source.

To set up an outdoor HD antenna, follow the instructions included with the product.

Those made for rooftops should include proper mounting bolts and, ideally, small sealing squares (basically roof-patching squares) that sit between the antenna mount base and the roof. If those sealing squares aren’t included, head to your home-improvement store for roof patches and cut them to fit.

You’ll also need to feed the coaxial cable connecting the antenna back into the house to your television. If possible, try using the holes already drilled by the cable company to install its coax, rather than punch more holes in your home’s envelope.

HOME TIP: If you have an existing dish or antenna mount on the roof, take note of how the mount base is set up. It can be a big help in setting up your HD antenna without causing a roof leak.

It also breaks down to become energy and doesn’t get stored in the body like other fats. It has a pleasant, slightly sweet taste and blends well with a variety of foods. Three to five tablespoons of coconut oil a day are recommended for best results.

Coconut oil has a long shelf life and doesn’t have to be kept refrigerated (unless you prefer to use it in a solid state for combining with other ingredients), so buying coconut oil in bulk from online stores like Vitacost.com will save you a lot of money. Because you can use coconut oil in so many ways, buying in bulk also is the easiest way to keep this wonderful product on hand. I not only use it on my hair and skin, it’s also become a kitchen staple.

Here are some suggestions on ways you can easily incorporate coconut oil into your daily diet: --Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of coconut oil to smoothies, protein powders or yogurt; --Add a tablespoon to hot or cold cereal; --Use coconut oil as a sugar or creamer replacement for either tea or coffee that’s cool enough to drink. Stir often to combine the oil with the liquid.

--Coconut oil is a healthy cooking oil, especially for low- to medium-heat cooking and sauteing as it doesn’t break down easily. Add 1 to 3 tablespoons to your pan and cook eggs, vegetables, rice and grain

dishes, potatoes, curries, soups, stews and meats.

--Spread some coconut oil on slices of bread, rolls, bagels or crackers.

--Make compound “butters” and flavored spreads with solid coconut oil. Blend 2 to 3 tablespoons of coconut oil with nut butters, cream cheese or fruit spreads. Also try adding some cinnamon and honey to coconut oil to make a spread.

--Combine liquid coconut oil with herbs and spices to create a healthy dressing for salads.

BABA GHANOUSH My version of baba ghanoush has added flavor and health benefits with the addition of coconut oil. This savory eggplant puree is flavored with tahini, lemon juice and fresh herbs. Eat it with wedges of wholewheat pita bread for dipping, or spoon it over roasted meats and vegetables.

1 large eggplant (about 1 pound), halved lengthwise 1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt, divided 3 tablespoons sesame tahini 1 to 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 2 tablespoons nonfat plain Greek yogurt 1/2 cup parsley leaves, chopped, plus more for garnish 1/4 cup lemon juice 2 tablespoons coconut oil, plus 1 tablespoon more for garnish

1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Sprinkle eggplant with 1/2 teaspoon salt. Place eggplant cut-side down on a foil-lined baking sheet.

Prick all over with a fork and bake until soft and collapsed, about 20 minutes.

2. When cool enough to handle, scoop eggplant pulp into a bowl and discard skin.

Add remaining teaspoon of salt, the tahini, garlic, yogurt, parsley, lemon juice and the coconut oil. Mash for a chunky texture or puree in a blender (before adding parsley) for a smooth texture.

3. Garnish with parsley and drizzle with coconut oil. Serve with warm pita bread or crackers.

Ban Pit Bulls?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve been reading recent reports that some communities in the United States are trying to ban certain breeds of dogs, like pit bulls. I think this is a great idea, because pit bulls are so unpredictable and violent. Do you agree? -- Carol in Tacoma, Wash.

DEAR CAROL: Nope, I don’t agree. That’s because completely banning specific dog breeds won’t

solve the problem of dog bites and attacks.

Even dogs of breeds considered benign can attack humans or other dogs -- poodles being the first that come to mind. But, you argue, poodles aren’t violent! Well -- unfortunately, I’ve met a few. The fact is, all breeds of dog have the potential to bite humans. Owners must be aware of and accept this possibility.

I try to educate pet owners about better ways to care for their pets.

In the case of dog attacks, I feel that education of the owner is the strongest deterrent. That education should start before a person even becomes a dog owner, so that he or she can make the best choice of dog for the household. A pit bull or other type of guard or attack dog may not be ideal for a number of reasons beyond possible temperament: They’re big

dogs; they’re powerful; they need lots of attention and training, no matter how nice they appear to be.

Dog owners of all breeds -- not just those considered “dangerous” -- need to know the specific behavioral issues of their breed.

They need to train their dog, and socialize the dog with both other humans and other dogs. The best way to learn how to do this is to enroll in group training classes with a certified trainer, an investment that pays off all the way down the road.

• On July 31, 1715, a hurricane strikes the east coast of Florida, sinking 10 Spanish treasure ships carrying tons of gold and silver coins and killing nearly 1,000 people. About 80 percent of the treasures was recovered within a year, but the rest remained lost until the 1960s.

• On July 30, 1976, American Bruce Jenner wins gold in the decathlon at the Montreal Olympics and sets a world record in the event. After his win, Jenner was voted the 1976 AP Male Athlete of the Year. The 1976 Olympics was his last decathlon.

• On Aug. 1, 1981, MTV, the Music Television network, makes its maiden broadcast with the words, “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll.” The roughly 80 different videos that made up that first week’s rotation on MTV probably represented nearly every promotional music video then available.
