The recently-restored Big 4 tractor above was used by the Kettles and Cook families in the area a century ago, and is on display at the Reynolds-Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin. By Shannon Robin What a busy week it was in the neighbourhood!

So often we hear complaints of there being nothing to do, but if you check out our calendar page on a regular basis you’ll know that’s not at all the case.

On Wednesday my brother Cary and I made a trip to Waterton after work. We had the pleasure of experiencing the exceptional customer service and a good dog at Wieners of Waterton before cruising up to Cameron Lake.

On the way down the mountain we followed a black bear who sauntered along the side of the road a considerable way before heading back into the bush.

Every trip to the park is different, and it’s a place I’ve loved since my first visit four years ago.

The Bellevue Street Festival was one of the first events of the Doors Open and Heritage Festival in Crowsnest Pass. The only thing missing on Thursday was the sun.

A good number of people came out despite the weather and were treated to live music as they browsed vendor displays and checked out family activities. Organizers did a great job making sure there were activities to interest all ages. You could even snag a smooch from the Passquatch if you dared!

Brenda Shenton and I had a table set up for Shootin’ the Breeze, but made a run for it when the rain started pouring down. Hats off to the people who stuck it out!

By suppertime on Friday, Crowlodge Park in Brocket was filling up with campers, tents and teepees as people arrived for the 55th annual powwow.

My husband, Dennis, and I enjoyed watching several rodeo events before it was time for the grand entry, and stuck around until late evening.

It was awesome watching the dancers making their way around the sunlit arbour in their beautiful costumes. The drums beat steadily as generations joined together in traditional dancing.

Saturday I ventured back to the Pass in the morning. There is a wonderful Crowsnest Pass getaway package up for grabs for people who visited five events over the weekend, and I knew I wouldn’t

have a problem collecting stamps.

The Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery has photo contest entries on display along with Art Recycled. Prizes have been awarded in four categories – heritage, scenery, wildlife and people.

All month, people visiting the gallery can vote on their favourite photo, and the winner will receive the people’s choice award. I couldn’t decide which I liked best, and wound up voting for two!

The Pass Pottery Club had many pieces for sale, and I found a lovely little bowl with the letter S in the bottom as a treat for myself.

It was fairly quiet when I arrived, but many people were arriving as I was leaving.

The country market in Coleman was anything but quiet – what a great show of people for this event! Vendor booths were busy, the Turtle Mountain Riding Club auction was a success, and kids of all ages splashed in the water at Flumerfelt Park.

It was a pleasure to meet Francine Kilgannon and JaneAnn Reimer in person as they enjoyed a successful day. It’s always neat to put faces together with people I correspond with by phone or email.

By the time I arrived at the teddy bear picnic it wasn’t overly busy, but the large stack of registration forms showed that many youngsters and their favourite fuzzy friends had enjoyed the fun and old-fashioned games offered at the museum.

Out at Heritage Acres there were people everywhere and all kinds of things to see and do.

The family history display was fantastic, and will remain up for the rest of the summer.

The Parade of Power was noisy and interesting.

I kept looking at the metal seats on the machines and imagining how sore a person’s butt must have been after a long day in the field!

I visited the market, watched the tractor pull and enjoyed Bob Westrop’s colourful commentary before taking time out for a piece of homemade pie.

Debbie Berg told me that 75 to 100 pies are donated by women in the community for the annual show each year. She was also kind enough to help out when I slopped chocolate on my white shorts while thoroughly enjoying my pie.

I zipped home to pick Dennis up and we returned to Heritage Acres to enjoy their prime rib dinner. Many were disappointed when the Foothills Model T Ford Club cancelled their evening show on short notice, but hopefully we’ll get to see them another time.

Next on the agenda was a visit to the neat amphitheatre at Beauvais Lake for Charlie Russell’s presentation about living with grizzly bears.

Charlie kept the large crowd captivated with his tales and photos of 12 years spent in Kamchatka, Russia studying grizzlies.

Many, like us, had come out to the park specifically for the presentation, including a couple from the States. If you get a chance to see one of Charlie’s appearances make sure you take it – his story is truly amazing.

Whew, Saturday was over! Well, almost. We joined friends near Hillcrest for a campfire and some laughs before heading home.

Sunday we were out the door bright and early to hike to the former townsite of Lille. Our group was led by Dave and Eva Welsh and we had the opportunity to meet many friendly people as we trekked together and learned about Lille’s history.

I barely scratched the surface of the events listed on our calendar last week. My point is that there’s an amazing variety of things to do in southwest Alberta.

I deliberately made myself super busy so I would have lots of material to write about as I head home to Saskatchewan for a week.

For each part of an event I was able to attend, there were features that I missed, like the Blackfoot festival at Waterton, the horse races and parade at Brocket, the threshing demonstration at Heritage Acres and the Booze and Bars tour in the Pass.

That’s not a bad thing – it will take many summers for me to tire of these events because there will always be a new aspect to take in.

Every stage of an event, from the planning to the cleanup, requires people to step up and make things happen. It’s easy to forget to recognize the committed volunteers who make great events like these happen.

I’d like to extend a personal note of appreciation to each of these people – thanks to you I had a wonderful weekend!

99 years of tradition

By Shannon Robin I’m not sure there’s a specific motto belonging to the Livingstone Ladies Club, but based on what I saw at their annual picnic in late July, I believe it would be safe to say that they are about family, community and tradition.

There is a rich history behind the group, which began in 1913 as a social club for women in the Livingstone area.

Karen Poulsen has been a member of the club for 69 years, and Jane Rutledge isn’t far behind with 68 years invested in the group.

“Back then the women didn’t get around much to see each other, so this started as a social club,” Karen says. “It became a family outing because the women didn’t drive so they took the whole family.”

The club had its beginning in the North Fork district, but members have come from all over. “It really doesn’t matter where you’re from,” Karen adds.

Afternoon meetings were held monthly, and the women took turns hosting. With 20 active members in the club now, morning meetings are held every other month and the chance to host comes only every three years or so.

For some of the current members it was automatic to join the club because they had attended meetings with their mothers or other female family members.

As the ladies prepare to celebrate their centennial next summer, it’s a good time to reflect on how the club has evolved and what it has meant to them.

A popular tradition is the annual picnic, which has been hosted by Pauline Simard for many years.

I might be able to find my way back to this lovely spot along the riverbank, but was grateful to be following Carol Getzlaf on the way out.

It was raining in Pincher Creek when I left, and the sky looked quite hostile. When I asked Carol what would happen if the rain followed me, she simply said, “No way. We don’t cancel for anything.”

Families and friends reminisced, laughed and enjoyed dinner cooked over a huge campfire and a great selection of shared side dishes.

The atmosphere at the picnic said a lot about the club and its members. I expected only women, but quickly discovered that although it’s a ladies group, it’s really about family and that some of the men are just as

involved in projects as the women are.

I felt many eyes on me when I first arrived as the stranger among a group of friends, but that awkward feeling didn’t last long.

I had the chance to visit with several longtime members of the club like Marge, Virginia and Shirley.

It was only afterward that I realized I hadn’t done due diligence in asking for everyone’s last name – it simply felt like I was among friends.

Karen and Mercy shared some background about the club through the eyes of a longstanding friendship. Although not a member, Mercy has been involved with the group for many years.

The ladies were responsible for a plaque project which marked 17 old school sites in the Livingstone area, and have taken on various special projects over the years.

“Sometimes it’s been the Red Cross, or whatever comes up,” Karen says.

Each year the ladies work together to create a quilt. One member’s name is drawn to receive this special gift, and then is no longer eligible.

Eventually, each member will have a personal reminder of friendship and community service to treasure.

The ladies also put their talents in the kitchen to good use by providing lunches for local funerals. “We used to do lots of catering, but we’re getting too old to cut the mustard any more,” Shirley says with a laugh.

Their club has supported local and provincial organizations, and the ladies try to help whenever there is a need in their community.

Things are pretty relaxed – when the annual Christmas party rolls around, the club buys turkeys and hams, and whoever has time steps up to cook them.

A long-standing project is cleaning the Livingstone Cemetery, which is done in June each year.

Solid plans aren’t in place yet for the big anniversary celebration. However, it’s been made clear that the ladies intend to sit down and enjoy a catered meal on June 1.

Carol is secretary of the anniversary committee and has been busy gathering contact information for past members.

Women getting together for the good of themselves and their community is a positive thing for everyone.

Hopefully some of the young girls who attended the picnic will grow up to carry on the traditions of the Livingstone Ladies.

By Frieda Bruns I was the first winner of a Vacation a Month raffle draw supporting the Windy Slopes Health Foundation last year.

My lucky ticket was drawn Sept. 2 for a Caribbean cruise. My husband, Walter, sister Edna and brother-inlaw Mark wanted to do an Alaskan cruise, so instead we booked a seven-day cruise and six days overland.

June 30 was hot and sunny when we left for Calgary.

We were seated on our plane, but there were problems, so we left two hours later on a different plane.

Vancouver was rainy as we boarded the Sapphire Princess Cruise Ship. Clouds and drizzly weather stayed with us all seven days.

The food was delicious and buffets were available all day long. If you wanted a change, there were also fancy

restaurants offering as many items from the menu as you wanted. Needless to say, after so much food we went jogging on the promenade deck.

Employees on the ship are mostly from other areas of the world. They work 12 to 14 hours a day, seven days a week, and will be working into the fall or into December. We met lots of great employees and also cruise guests.

There was great entertainment on the ship – shows, movies, music and casino. There were also a couple of pools, a spa, games, stores, a fitness centre, an art gallery and bars.

On the cruise we saw dolphins, otters and whales.

There were many glaciers to see, but only one was calving, although there were lots of pieces in the water already.

We docked at Ketchikan – a native town – and at Skagway and Juneau, which are historic gold rush towns.

In Anchorage, the hanging flower baskets were so beautiful with all the extra sunshine.

We heard and saw stories of the great Alaskan earthquake of 1964.

Denali National Park has over one million acres of land, so there were lots of trees and a big area for wildlife to hide. We saw only a couple of caribou and one moose.

At McKinley Lodge we had our first partial glimpse of Mount McKinley, the tallest North American mountain, but the next day it was clearly visible in all its majestic glory.

We saw a dogsled race on dry ground. The dogs were very hyper, knowing they were going to race.

I find Waterton Park more beautiful, and we can see more wildlife on any given day. We did see a natural

In Fairbanks we panned for gold at an old gold dredge and saw part of the Alaskan pipeline.

We also had a paddle boat trip to an Athabascan Indian village, where we were shown how they prepare and smoke salmon, the animal hides and furs, their living accommodations, and some of their beautiful handmade clothing.

Unfortunately, the weather turned nice on the second last day in Alaska.

Helping Brenda catch her breath

By Shannon Robin The good news is that Brenda Macdonald of Crowsnest Pass has qualified for a double lung transplant. The harsh reality accompanying that news is simple – her family can’t afford it.

Most people, Brenda included, assume that costs associated with life-and-death health situations are fully covered by Alberta Health Services. The costs of the actual surgery, Brenda’s hospital stay and three of five necessary anti-rejection drugs will be looked after by AHS. But, there’s much more to it than that.

“I wasn’t anticipating it would be like this,” Brenda says, referring to the stressful time her family is facing emotionally and financially. “I don’t think we should have to sell our home and go into debt,” but that may be what it takes to save her life.

At the age of 50, the young grandmother acknowledges that without the transplant she has a life expectancy of less than two years.

Seven years ago, Brenda was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as her mother and grandfather had been before her.

Brenda’s struggle with chronic bronchitis and shortness of breath had left her unable to work, and her last paycheque was in 2005. She was informed that she didn’t quality for CPP disability benefits because she hadn’t contributed enough in her working years, which were disrupted by sick days associated with COPD. Brenda was assessed by the transplant team in 2007 and deemed “not ill enough” to qualify for a transplant.

Brenda and her partner, Jim Tracey, were living in Fort McMurray with their children when Brenda’s doctor said she needed to move to an area with better air quality. The family had lived in Crowsnest Pass previously, so it was a natural choice for them to return in 2010 to a place they had always loved.

About a year ago, Brenda began using oxygen

full time. A fifty-foot length of plastic tubing connects Brenda to her lifeline limiting where she can go and what she can do.

“I just want to be able to do things with him,” Brenda says. There’s a park next door, and it breaks her heart that she can’t take her grandson there.

In March she was assessed for transplant potential again, and this time found out she qualified.

While this is good news, it also means her situation is now considered dire.

Brenda’s doctors had hoped lung volume reduction surgery might improve her quality of life, but her condition is too severe for this procedure and a transplant is now the only option.

Brenda’s first appointments in Edmonton run Aug. 20 to 24. This will include thorough screening to ensure there are no underlying conditions present that might jeopardize her suitability for a transplant.

All costs associated with travel and accommodation are the responsibility of the patient during this process.

The next Edmonton trip will involve six weeks of respiratory and pulmonary rehabilitation to build strength prior to surgery. Brenda will be an outpatient during this time, again at her own expense.

Then the waiting game will begin. Brenda will have regular checkup appointments in Edmonton to get to and from, while her family prays for the gift of a set of lungs from someone who is the same size and blood type.

If a donor is found and surgery is successful, Brenda will be hospitalized for about six weeks.

She’ll also need to remain in Edmonton for three to six months afterward. This will be the most challenging time for Brenda and her family, and having a support person with her during these months is mandatory.

“I need my spouse for support, but he can’t get time off, we have a child in school and I just don’t know how we’re going to manage,” she says. Right now the situation is completely overwhelming.

Doctors have warned Brenda that her body will try to reject the lungs at least twice, and the risk of infection is high following surgery. In the months afterward, she will need to live close to the hospital and avoid public transportation, groups of people and animals.

BREATH, continued from page 6 ment are huge and can’t be ignored. The cost of travel and accommodation will be significant, and income will be lost by whoever is able to be her support person following surgery.

Brenda is scared to be without Jim at her side. “If you have an exacerbation attack that can be it,” she says. “My right lung has collapsed three times and I’ve had a couple of close calls when all you can do is hope the ambulance gets there on time.”

“I feel awkward asking for help and it’s causing so much stress,” Brenda says. “I don’t go out and I don’t know a lot of people, and I really don’t know where to start.”

“I used to be a real go-getter, and I’m fortunate that Jim does so much for me now,” Brenda says. “Mentally I’m drained and I don’t have a lot of fight left in me, and the effect it’s had on my family is awful. It scares the hell out of my kids.”

After donating for many years to the Canadian Lung Association, Brenda was disappointed with the response she received to her request for funding assistance. “I was directed to a link on their website with information about selling chocolates and popcorn door-todoor to raise money,” Brenda says. “It wasn’t what I was expecting.”

Brenda has supported many people and causes over the years and is struggling with being on the asking side and in need of help herself. “I hate to ask for help because there’s always someone else who’s worse off, but I don’t know where to turn,” she says.

Sixteen-year-old Ty and his friends have talked of a hot lunch fundraiser when school

starts, and friends from Fernie have held a pancake breakfast. An account has been set up at the Blairmore CIBC, and a story

by Crowsnest Pass Promoter editor Joni MacFarlane has generated interest but so far no financial support.

Brenda was touched when she was approached by some women at McDonald’s in Pincher Creek who had read Joni’s story. “They were so friendly and so nice,” she says. “They said I was just a baby and were surprised I was so young.”

What Brenda needs is a champion – an individual or group to help her come up with a fundraising strategy that will help her cover about $30,000 of expenses associated with the transplant.

“Thankfully I’ve got a good man,” Brenda says. “He got a lot more than he bargained for!”

Although Brenda hasn’t been able to explore her own backyard, she has her eye on the perfect spot for a wedding to Jim, who has been her partner for 21 years.

For now, Brenda says she and her family will continue jumping through hoops and will do their best to get the finances together, so that when the transplant call comes, she will be able to say, “Yes, I’ll be right there.”

Bob Toney has been tallying donations, and so far over 100 trees have been purchased for the Pincher Creek golf course.

Sprucing up the course Bob Toney has been a busy guy! As he can, he’s been visiting businesses and people he knows to encourage them to buy a tree for the Pincher Creek golf course.

The $200 per tree cost includes delivery and planting by a nursery in Raymond. The Colorado blue spruce trees will be about 10 feet tall, and already over 100 have been sold.

“We need trees badly on the golf course,” Bob says. “I found a good deal when buying trees for my ranch and took the idea to the golf club executive.”

They were receptive to the idea as long as Bob was willing to take the project on.

“We’ve had very, very generous support from golf members, businesses, the town and the MD,” he says. “It’s been awfully well received.”

Bob says the course is in better shape than it’s ever been, and feels the additional trees will make the course even more attractive. “We’ve got one of the best superintendents looking after it,” he says. “Man, they’re beautiful trees!”

The trees will be delivered and planted around Sept.

1. Until then, Bob will continue selling and adding names to the donor recognition tree at the clubhouse.

“It’s easy to sell something that’s for the good of the community – and who can deny a tree?”

Long weekend law enforcement tally RCMP news release

Alberta law enforcement officers were out in force over the long weekend to encourage drivers and those enjoying Alberta’s parks and forested areas to be responsible.

To ensure road safety, officers enforced traffic laws, including the tougher provincial penalties for drunk drivers with a blood alcohol content over .08, conducted check stops and off-highway vehicle compliance checks. Many of the traffic-related charges were issued

by RCMP and Alberta traffic sheriffs, working together in Integrated Traffic Units.

Integrated Traffic Unit members were also on Highway 63, where 16 new RCMP and Alberta traffic sheriffs will be in place by early 2013. The first two of those additional officers are already patrolling the highway and surrounding areas, with the remaining to be added over the coming months.

From Friday, August 3, to Monday, August 6, RCMP members, Alberta traffic sheriffs, conservation officers, fish and wildlife officers as well as commercial vehicle enforcement officers, issued 5,140 tickets for offences ranging from dangerous driving to speeding. Among the charges were: • 35 impaired driving charges, 202 other alcohol-related violations and 29 24-hour suspensions for alcohol or drug use; • 3,556 speeding violations; • 38 distracted driving violations; • 55 intersection-related infractions;

• 43 hazardous violations including dangerous driving; • 210 seatbelt or child restraint infractions; and • 666 violations ranging from having no insurance to driving while suspended.

Of the above charges, 881 were laid in the Highway 63 corridor, including: • one impaired driving charge, 22 other alcohol-related violations and eight 24-hour suspensions for alcohol or drug use; • 655 speeding violations; • three intersection-related infractions; • five distracted driving violations; • 19 hazardous violations including dangerous driving; • 13 seatbelt or child restraint infractions; and • 155 violations ranging from having no insurance to driving while suspended.

Alberta’s traffic safety partners continue to make our highways safer by focusing on the four most dangerous driving activities: impaired driving; not using seatbelts; speeding; and proceeding unsafely through intersections.

This month they are targeting impaired drivers because statistics show August has a consistently high number of alcohol-related traffic deaths, and drivers in fatal collisions are four times more likely to be impaired or have consumed alcohol than drivers in non-fatal collisions.

Over the long weekend, commercial vehicle enforcement officers

also handed out 37 tickets to unsafe truck drivers for violations such as mechanical defects and overloading.

Public information activities were also stepped up to encourage responsible use of highways, public lands and parks, and inform the public about safe recreation practices, and regulations.

Every year, thousands of outdoor enthusiasts and campers enjoy the August long weekend in Alberta’s beautiful outdoors.

While the great majority of Albertans respect the need to drive safely and use public land responsibly, Alberta’s resource enforcement officers are key to ensuring an enjoyable experience for everyone.

They laid a range of charges on conservation matters or unsafe activities in the province’s campgrounds and public recreation areas, including: • 201 charges for violations relating to the Fisheries Act such as exceeding fishing limits and fishing without a licence; and • 68 parks-related offences such as noise complaints.

His name is Art Werner, 57 years old, a native of Manitoba, and he is walking from Whistler, B.C. to Key West, Fla. He began his walk on June 4 and he is coming your way.

Werner is accompanied on the Canadian leg of his trip by his 80-year-old mother, Joan Bund, as his pilot car driver.

Her husband, Cec Bund, lost his battle with cancer in 2011, just six months after Art’s nephew, Ross Werner, lost his battle with cancer at age 28.

“The Eighteen-Day Running Mate: McGovern, Eagleton, and a Campaign in Crisis”

by Joshua M. Glasser (Yale University Press, $26) Reviewed by Larry Cox Joshua M. Glasser, a researcher for Bloomberg Television in New York, first became intrigued with Thomas Eagleton when he read his obituary in The New York Times in 2007.

Even though Eagleton’s brief stint as a vice-presidential candidate is now mostly a footnote in our national history, during the summer of 1972, he changed the direction of a national campaign and helped re-elect Richard Nixon to the presidency.

That July, Jane Fonda toured North Vietnam, the U.S. began selling grain to Russia, and brutal attacks continued in Northern Ireland. Our musical tastes included the latest albums of Chicago, Rod Stewart and Three Dog Night. On July 10, the National Democratic Convention began in Miami, where delegates nominated Sen. George McGovern to

head the national ticket. McGovern, a U.S. senator from South Dakota, backed a complete withdrawal from South Vietnam and picked Sen. Thomas Eagleton of Missouri as his running mate.

Within days of Eagleton’s nomination, a pair of anonymous phone calls brought to light his history of hospitalizations for “nervous exhaustion” and past treatments that included electroshock sessions. The caller who triggered the crisis has never been identified.

With the wives of the two candidates at their sides, McGovern and Eagleton met in South Dakota to plan a strategy to cope with Eagleton’s medical history. Despite McGovern assurance that he was “1,000 percent” behind his running mate and would continue to support him, blood was in the water, and the ticket was derailed. Within 18 days of his nomination, Eagleton withdrew.

By Steve Becker This deal occurred many years ago in a board-a-match team contest in Maryland. The North-South pair in the auction shown were Simon Becker and B. Jay Becker, this writer’s uncle and father, respectively, both of whom passed away in the late 1980s.

The brothers Becker reached a shaky spade slam and were very fortunate to receive the opening lead of the ace of clubs, after which 12 tricks could not be denied. Had West led a trump, or had he led another suit and then shifted to a trump upon winning the ace of clubs, the slam could not have been made. The score came to 1,430 points (500 for game, 750 for slam and 180 for tricks).

Both Beckers thought they had won the board easily. They expected that even if the opposing North-South pair got to the slam, it would be defeated. But there was no way they could have anticipated the actual goings-on at the other table.

There, the Beckers’ teammates competed vigorously in hearts against North-South’s spade bids. When South eventually bid four spades, West, for some unknown reason, decided to double, and South redoubled.

West led the king of hearts and subsequently switched to a trump after taking the king of clubs with the ace.

This held declarer to 11 tricks. After such a debacle, the Beckers’ teammates naturally assumed the board had been irretrievably lost.

The declarer at this table scored 480 points for his tricks, 50 for making the redoubled contract, 400 for the redoubled overtrick and 500 for game. This came to 1,430 points, so the two teams wound up tying the board! (c)2012 King Features Syndicate Inc.

“Chimpanzee” (G) -- Disney knows how to produce a nature documentary.

Sure, it’s more sympathetic than scientific. The result, however, is an affecting look at another species, one that is intolerably fun to watch and also in peril. Fun With Summer Strawberries Local strawberries are so sweet, juicy and luscious right now that I have to remind myself that summer’s strawberry fields don’t last forever. I savor the plump, red berries and love showing them off in new ways with my family. While they taste great au naturel for a grab-and-go snack, there are endless ways to incorporate them with other healthy ingredients day in and day out.

Here are sweet ideas we are enjoying this year: Spinach and Strawberry Salad Kids won’t eat their spinach? Make a tasty salad with a light vinaigrette your kids make.

Get started by letting them grate the rind of a clean lemon into a small bowl, then cut the lemon in half and squeeze out all of the juice. Add 1 tablespoon rice vinegar and 1 teaspoon sugar. As one child drizzles 1/4 cup olive oil into the mixture, another child may whisk briskly.

Drizzle over a bowl of spinach, cubed fresh mango and strawberry slices.

Add toasted almond slices, if you wish.

Strawberry Faux Fondue Summertime is party time. For a simple do-it-yourself dessert at a large gathering, set a big bowl of strawberries in the center of a table, along with bamboo skewers and fondue-style sweets in small bowls for dipping. Before the party, let your kids fill the bowls with caramel, strawberry and fudge sauces, powdered sugar and brown sugar. To serve, tell guests to poke a berry onto a skewer and dip into a treat.

A Bowl of Berries Chop fresh mint and add to a bowl of blueberries, raspberries and sliced strawberries as a fruit side dish at lunchtime. The combo also makes a nice dessert served with a favorite cookie.

Cut strawberries in half lengthwise and let your kids poke several onto bamboo skewers lengthwise. An adult should set the cut side of the berries on a grill for a minute, or until grill marks appear. How to Prevent Heat Injuries DEAR DR. DONOHUE: This will be my first year as an assistant football coach at the high-school level. The head coach has given me the task of preparing for heat-related injuries. It stays hot here way into October. I’d appreciate any tips you can give me.

-- G.O. ANSWER: The best prevention for heat injuries is calling off practice on hot, humid days. What exactly is a hot, humid day? If your school has a wet-bulb globe thermometer, on days when it registers 82 or higher, either call off practice or limit the work done. This reading incorporates heat and humidity.

It takes two weeks for the body to acclimatize to heat. In the first few days, drills should not be demanding. Once acclimatized, the body sweats earlier and the sodium content of sweat lessens. Encourage players to stay hydrated. They should drink 16 to 20 ounces of water or a sports drink two hours before and again half an hour before practice. Players should continue to

Heat cramps are the first sign of trouble. Muscles of the arms, legs or abdomen cramp. Cramping players should be taken out of practice, sit in a cool, shaded place and drink sodium-containing fluids. Heat fainting is a more serious sign of heat trouble.

Such a player should be taken to an air-conditioned room, hydrated and carefully watched. This player ought not to practice the following day.

Heat exhaustion is the next and is a quite serious sign of heat injury. The player sweats heavily, might be nauseated, breathes rapidly and has a fast pulse and low blood pressure. He’s apt to be confused. The player is dehydrated and sodium-depleted. He must be quickly taken to an air-conditioned room, have his clothes removed and his legs elevated. Cold fluids containing sodium are essential. If he’s not responding to this treatment shortly, he ought to be taken to a hospital emergency department.

Heatstroke is the most serious heat injury. All the signs mentioned above are present, but the skin can be dry.

The player is groggy or unresponsive.

Does taking iodine help? I hear that taking thyroid hormone is a lifetime commitment. -- C.N. ANSWER: Hypothyroidism is a thyroid gland that’s putting out way too little thyroid hormone. All body processes slow. People become weak and are exhausted. They’re cold when others are pleasantly warm. They gain weight without overeating. Their skin dries. The face becomes puffy. The heart beats slowly.

Worldwide, iodine deficiency is the main cause of a sluggish thyroid gland. It is not in North America.

Here, the main cause is an attack on the gland by the immune system.

The appropriate treatment is supplying the hormone in pill form. It usually is a lifelong treatment, but it’s not an onerous one. Bulgur Bean Burgers Satisfy vegetarians and meat-eaters alike with these healthful, Middle Eastern-style Bulgur Bean Burgers. No one will miss the beef when black beans and spices are providing first-class flavor.

1 cup water Salt and ground black pepper 1/2 cup bulgur 1 can (15 to 19 ounces) reducedsodium black beans, rinsed and drained 1 container (6 ounces) plain low-fat yogurt 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 cup (packed) mint leaves, chopped Nonstick cooking spray 1 small shredded Kirby (pickling) cucumber 4 whole-wheat hamburger buns 4 lettuce leaves 1 medium tomato, sliced 1. In 1-quart saucepan, heat water and 1/2 teaspoon salt to boiling over high heat. Stir in bulgur. Reduce heat to low; cover and simmer 10 to

12 minutes or until water is absorbed.

2. Meanwhile, in large bowl, with potato masher or fork, mash beans with 2 tablespoons yogurt until almost smooth. Stir in bulgur, allspice, cinnamon, cumin and half of mint until combined. With lightly floured hands, shape bean mixture into four 3-inch-round patties. Spray both sides of each patty lightly with nonstick cooking spray.

3. Heat nonstick 12-inch skillet over medium heat until hot. Add burgers and cook 8 minutes or until lightly browned and heated through, turning over once.

4. While burgers are cooking, prepare yogurt sauce: In small bowl, combine cucumber, remaining yogurt and mint, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Makes about 1 1/4 cups.

5. To serve, divide lettuce, tomato and burgers among buns; top with some yogurt sauce. Serve with remaining yogurt sauce. Serves 4.

By Samantha Mazzotta Shower Head a Leaky Mess Q: I have one of those flexible sprayer shower heads that you can lift from its holder and use. Whenever I turn on the shower, water squirts from the part where the holder attaches to the water pipe, and also runs from the end of the hose where it attaches to the shower head. Do I need to replace it or can I fix this? -- Lorelei D., Atlanta A: Check the shower head attachment points for any visible damage first. A visibly cracked hose or plastic attachment piece often means the entire unit needs to be replaced. However, if you can’t see any damage, you may be able to fix this with just the twist of an adjustable wrench.

To avoid damaging or scratching the connector nut -- which attaches the shower unit to the inlet pipe (sometimes called a goose-neck pipe) -- wrap a soft rag around the nut. Use an adjustable wrench that can fit comfortably around the connector nut, and gently turn the nut clockwise just slightly -- one-quarter turn at most. Unwrap the rag

from around the connector nut and turn on the shower to see if the leak has diminished or stopped. If it needs more adjustment, replace the rag and gently turn the connector nut another quarter-turn.

Keep in mind that turning the connector too tight may make the leak worse; that’s one reason to make such small incremental adjustments. Another reason is to avoid damaging the connector nut or the seal.

If you notice cracks or other damage to the shower unit, in most cases you’ll need to replace the entire unit (except for some more expensive shower heads, which often offer replacement parts from the manufacturer).

To replace the unit, head to the home-improvement store and pick out a shower head of your choice, along with some Teflon tape.

Back home, turn off the water feed to the shower. If you can’t find the nearest shutoff valve, turn off water to the house.

Unscrew the old shower sprayer unit from the inlet pipe, using your pliers and turning counterclockwise to loosen and remove it.

Clean away any old sealant, tape or gunky buildup from the threads of the inlet pipe.

Unwrap the new shower unit and take a look at the connection and accompanying hardware. Connectors that come with a rubber washer generally need to be tightly screwed on using your pliers; connectors that don’t generally just need to be hand-tightened.

Now, take your new Teflon tape. Wrap it carefully around the threads of the inlet pipe, creating a single layer around the threads from the end of the pipe to just below the end of the threads. (The tape will push upward when you screw on the new shower head, so leave a bit of space.) Press the tape into the threads with your fingers.

Carefully line up the connector of the new shower unit with the pipe and screw on, turning clockwise. Use your hand to tighten the connection; if you need to tighten more, protect the finish of the connector by wrapping a rag around it and tighten in small increments using pliers. Turn on water to the shower to test the connection, adjusting slightly if needed until the connection no longer leaks.

HOME TIP: Don’t have a set of pliers that fit your pipes? Look for channel locking pliers, which can open to a range of widths to fit varying widths of pipe.

DAIRY-FREE FROZEN VANILLA CUSTARD 1 1/2 cup soymilk powder 3 1/2 cups soymilk 2/3 cup water 1 1/2 cups agave or maple syrup 1 tablespoon pure vanilla 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar 1. In a blender, combine soymilk powder, water and soymilk until wellblended.

2. Combine the soymilk mixture with the syrup, vanilla and vinegar in a small saucepan over medium-low heat.

Stirring constantly, cook until the mixture is thick and syrupy in consistency.

3. Pour mixture into an ice-cream maker and follow manufacturer’s directions. If you don’t have an icecream maker, use a 9- by 5-inch metal

loaf pan or other medium-sized metal or aluminum pan. Place the pan in the freezer uncovered for 1 hour.

4. Stir mixture well every 30 minutes with wire whisk for the first two hours (this will prevent ice crystals from forming). After the final stirring, allow frozen custard to chill in the freezer, covered with plastic wrap, for 1 hour after the last blend before serving.

Serve cold immediately, adding your choice of toppings, as desired.

DAIRY-FREE BANANA WALNUT ICE CREAM 2 medium-sized bananas 1/2 cup dairy-free plain or sweetened almond milk or coconut milk or a combination of both 2 (12.3-ounce) boxes extra-firm silken tofu, drained 1/2 cup agave nectar or maple syrup 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup raw walnuts 1. In a blender, process the bananas and almond or coconut milk until creamy. Add tofu, agave nectar or maple syrup, vanilla and salt, and blend until smooth.

2. Pour mixture into an ice-cream maker and add walnuts as directed. Alternately, fold walnuts into the mixture and place it in a shallow metal dish,

such as a cake pan or 9- by 13-inch pan.

3. Place pan into the freezer, stirring well every 30 minutes with a wire whisk for the first two hours (this will prevent ice crystals from forming).

After the final stirring, allow the frozen custard to rest, covered with plastic wrap, in freezer for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Serve immediately. Serves 4.

Running With Your Dog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I started my own fitness training about four months ago, and have done pretty well with daily runs. Now that my dog “Spirit” is out of puppyhood -- he’s about 9 months old -- I’ve tried to take him along. But he didn’t seem too excited the first time we went running together.

He stopped running and tugged on his leash back toward home after just half a mile. How can I

DEAR CURT: You’ve got to work Spirit up to it, just as you had to work your fitness upward. He gave a really clear signal that a half mile was his initial maximum distance; at that point it was time to take him home. Spirit is still very young to be out running, so don’t get discouraged by that first-day showing; just gradually increase the distance each day in small increments, take Spirit home, and finish your own run.

Running with your dog can be rewarding, providing companionship and even a measure of security. But keep your dog’s welfare in mind throughout the exercise.

Heidi Ganahl of Camp Bow Wow offered some important tips for keeping your dog safe while running:

--Don’t feed your dog less than 1 hour before or after running, to avoid the possibility of bloat.

--Put sunblock on your dog’s nose on sunny days.

--Make sure he drinks plenty of water before and after the run.

--Check your dog’s feet after each run for injuries.

--Avoid running in very hot, humid weather, as dogs can overheat quickly.

--Place reflective gear on your dog and yourself if running in the evening or early morning.

• On Aug. 9, 1936, at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, black American track star Jesse Owens wins his fourth gold medal of the Games in the 4-by-100-meter relay.

His relay team set a new world record of 39.8 seconds, which stood for 20 years.

• On Aug. 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the world’s first atom bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan. Some 80,000 people are killed as a result of the blast, and another 35,000 are injured. At least 60,000 more would be dead by the end of the year from the effects of the radioactive fallout.

• On Aug. 7, 1959, the U.S. unmanned spacecraft Explorer 6 is launched into an orbit around the Earth. The spacecraft featured a scanner that transmitted a crude picture of the Earth’s surface from

a distance of 17,000 miles. The photo, received in Hawaii, took nearly 40 minutes to transmit.

• On Aug. 11, 1965, in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, a riot began that eventually ranged over a 50-squaremile area. With the assistance of thousands of National Guardsmen, order was restored five days later. The violence left 34 dead, 1,032 injured, nearly 4,000 arrested and $40 million worth of property destroyed.

• On Aug. 8, 1974, President Richard Nixon announces his intention to become the first president in American history to resign. With impeachment proceedings under way against him for his involvement in the Watergate affair, Nixon finally bowed to pressure from the public and Congress to leave the White

House.

• On Aug. 10, 1981, Pete Rose of the Philadelphia Phillies gets the 3,631st hit of his baseball career, breaking Stan Musial’s record for most hits by a National Leaguer. It was only Rose’s 2,886th game; it had taken Musial 3,026 games to set the mark.

• On Aug. 12, 1990, fossil hunter Susan Hendrickson discovers three huge bones jutting out of a cliff in South Dakota.

They turned out to be part of the largest Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton ever discovered, a 65 million-year-old specimen.
