Hockey dreams come true Felicity Miller, 7, of Hillcrest was one of two female players in last Thursday’s Goals and Dreams Cup at the Coleman Sports Complex.

After gearing up, she was all smiles while waiting to take to the ice with some special helpers from the NHL. Forty-six youngsters, aged five to 15, were selected to participate and each received a full set of hockey equipment from the NHL Players’ Association. See story on page 4.

My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin After a week away, it was great fun to attend the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo for the first time last weekend.

Although I wasn’t back in town in time for any of the gymkhana events, I took in the pancake breakfast, parade, chicken races, rodeo events and blistering heat.

Premier Allison Redford was a special guest at the Rotary pancake breakfast Saturday morning. She visited with people and listened to concerns as she worked her way through the large crowd.

Rotary members grilled sausages and flipped pancakes until there was nothing left, while Herky Cutler provided non-stop musical entertainment for the morning.

Chairs were in place to save spots on Main Street first thing in the morning, and people lined the streets for the 60th anniversary parade. There were clowns on stilts, bagpipes, dogs, many decorated floats, horses, cool cars and lots of candy.

A parade isn’t a parade without a show of John Deere green. I noticed that a big green tractor seemed to be heading my direction rather than staying in line. Just when I wondered if I should be nervous, I realized my friend Shelly Terpstra was waving from the cab.

Whew!

A tsk, tsk goes out to all those who left candy wrappers littering the sidewalks and lawns when the parade was over. Really, people, our downtown streets have garbage cans for a reason!

The chicken chariot races attracted a decent crowd, and the Crestview Lodge entry took home top honours. The reluctant cluckers needed a bit of a push-start before making their way down the course, as Bob Westrop provided colour commentary. There were some elaborate

wagons, and chicken Lady Gaga brought along both a chuckwagon and a chariot to help her place first in her heat and second overall.

Thrills and spills were the order of the day for the rodeo events. There were some injuries and some close calls, but everyone was quickly tended to by our local emergency medical crew and the sports medicine team.

It was great to watch the local competitors hold their own against cowboys from all over North America and as far away as New Zealand, and to see the crowd support everyone.

I felt sorry for the calves that were chased by a horde of kids eager for their chance to take home a brand-new bike, but they didn’t seem to mind.

During intermission shows each day, Niki Flundra demonstrated the amazing bond that can exist with a horse. It was a display of beauty and trust, and an amazing example of local talent.

Chelsea Stokke has proven herself to be a wonderful representative of both the area and the rodeo this past year in her role as Little Miss Rodeo Pincher Creek. She stepped up Sunday afternoon to fill Jodie Dunbar’s boots as rodeo queen for the next year.

Diane Bowen-Oczkowski was honoured on Sunday as well for her volunteer dedication to the rodeo.

The Pincher Ranch Girls looked beautiful carrying sponsor flags as their horses galloped around the ring between events.

One more tsk, tsk to those who left their garbage behind in the stands. There was a huge mess even though there are trash cans at the rodeo grounds as well!

From what I saw, the event ran smoothly, and I tip my pink straw hat to ag society president Janet Watmough and to everyone who contributed to the success of the rodeo.

The Breeze Mailbox Berries, berries everywhere!

The latest stretch of warm weather, after all the rain in June, is making the berry crop look great for this year’s Huckleberry Festival at Castle Mountain Resort. Recent patrols of the mountain show some berries are ready right now, but many more will be ripe in a couple of weeks. The 17th annual Huckleberry Festival will have fun things to do for everyone in the family, from a bonfire Friday night at the T-Bar Pub through to a Sunday brunch.

Saturday is packed full of activities, including a pancake breakfast, chairlift rides, live entertainment, face painting, crafts and, of course, berry picking. Things get going at 9 a.m. and continue into the wee hours of the morning. The infamous pig roast will complement the great roast beef dinner again this year. Entertainment will include Magnolia Buckskin, The Fragments, Patrick Sean Earl, Jackie Gingras, Therry Lawson and Scott Yvonne. All activities are free, apart from a small fee for the chairlift ride and for the food.

This is the only yearly fundraiser for the Castle Mountain Community Association, so there will be a ton of great items to bid on in the silent auction. All proceeds to the association will go towards safety equipment and supplies that help not only the resort but also the entire valley.

This festival is one of the highlights of the summer season in southwest Alberta, and it is a great reason to get out and enjoy the beauty of the Castle area.

A day of goals, dreams and remembrance

By Brenda Shenton Watching the young participants as they suited up for the Goals and Dreams Cup last Thursday – interacting with NHL players Kevin Bieksa, Tanner Glass, Darcy Hordichuk and Kris Versteeg – was heartwarming, to say the least.

Some were tiny and brand new to the ice, others more seasoned and fast on their feet.

All seemed to enjoy the interaction taking place; the Coleman Sports Complex was absolutely abuzz with action.

After some skating and puck-handling assistance, the kids enthusiastically played the fun Goals and Dreams Cup game with the NHL players as their coaches. What more could a bunch of kids who love hockey ask for?

The game was played in honour of local hockey legend Rick Rypien, who died last August.

The NHL Players’ Association, wanting to honour the memory of Rick through its Goals and Dreams program, approached his brother, Wes Rypien Jr., who turned to Tracey Linderman to help make things happen. Tracey enlisted the help of Sam Marra, Rory Snider, Chad Petrone, Joanne Drain and Kevin Petovello – the result was the donation of 50 full sets of gear to outfit local children.

According to Tracey, 46 participants (aged five to 15) participated in the game,

and were chosen from an area stretching from Brocket to the Elk Valley.

Selections were based on the need for an opportunity to play hockey, not necessarily financial need, as the NHLPA’s mandate is to reach as many kids as possible who haven’t had a chance to play.

The extra equipment will be retained by KidSport Crowsnest Pass and is sure to be well used and appreciated by children in the area.

The afternoon Goals and Dreams Cup was followed by an evening celebrity game featuring the NHL players, which attracted a full house of fans.

The Rypien family was presented with a bronze plaque from the NHLPA in commemoration of Rick’s contributions to the game of hockey.

Rick’s former teammate Kevin Bieksa shared his appreciation for the opportunity to remember his friend by giving back to Rick’s community through their shared love of hockey.

Funds raised from the celebrity game, along with money from a golf tournament, banquet and auction held earlier this month, were donated to the recently-launched Ricky Ryp Foundation.

Rick was a strong supporter of the local hockey school, and it was renamed in his honour this year. More than 20 local volunteers helped out at the school, which ran last Monday to Friday.

Backing continues for conservation project For the second straight year, Crowsnest Conservation Society’s efforts to maintain and restore Crowsnest River riparian areas have garnered support from the Alberta Conservation Association.

The project was one of 32 funded this year under the ACA’s Grant Eligible Conservation Fund, which focuses on improvements to Alberta’s wildlife and fish populations and their habitats.

“Riparian restoration along the Crowsnest River plays an important part in our efforts to improve water quality and fish habitat,” says Karen Rendall, Crowsnest Conservation Society’s project co-ordinator. “In the past two years ACA has committed close to $50,000 to this project. It is so fantastic to have this type of financial support dedicated to the Crowsnest River.”

“You may see our riparian technician, Heather McCubbin, and our many CCS volunteers weeding or planting along the Crowsnest River this summer and fall,” Karen says.

The Crowsnest River is a world-class fishery and recreational magnet. The project supports broader wildlife activity in riparian areas through the restoration of native plant and shrub communities along the riverbanks that provide nesting habitat, cover and forage for a wide range of birds and mammals.

Healthy aquatic ecosystems in the Crowsnest region and downstream areas will attract Albertans to the community for recreation and to enjoy the wild spaces of Crowsnest Pass.

The society works in conjunction with the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass, and Kim Lutz, the municipality’s agricultural fieldman, manages the project on the ground.

All are dedicated to maintaining a systematic program to monitor, remove and control weed infestations and to restore native biodiversity in riparian areas along Crowsnest River.

Crowsnest Conservation Society is a charitable, grassroots organization that works with community partners to achieve its mission of valuing and connecting people and nature for a healthy future in Crowsnest Pass and beyond.

Hummingbird conscious Sometimes, if I’m careful when I leave the house in the morning, I will catch a glimpse of shiny green feathers from our front step before the hummingbirds zoom away to their nests. If I’m really careful and move very slowly, one might perch daintily on a branch of the spruce tree a foot or so from the feeder and watch me warily. A few more moments pause and that wary hummingbird might even feel comfortable enough to start preening.

There are many legends about these tiny birds, one being a widespread belief in the folklore of the Americas that hummingbirds are messengers between worlds. In our modern culture, it is sometimes hard to imagine or believe such things, but sometimes I wonder....

I have been thinking of my dad lately. He always enjoyed sitting in the yard and watching the hummingbirds feed on the sugar water he’d prepared. He was amazed by how close the hummingbirds would come to humans in order to feed.

One of the things I really appreciated from my dad was the guidance he gave. He was a fairly understated guy, so he gave advice only when asked. But one year on my birthday he sent me a card in which he wrote: “Look to your inner voice and trust your instincts.”

I’m not sure what year he sent that card, but I have reminded myself of that advice many times. I find, sitting here watching the hummingbirds at our feeders, those words

are kind of studying each other right now.

I am surprised by how big her eyelids are. She blinks and her dewdrop eye is covered by charcoalgrey skin for an instant, then the eye is clear and looking back at me. She sits calmly poised on the branch, and I become aware that I am observing true stillness.

After what seems like an hour, but is in fact only a couple of minutes, she apparently decides that I am safe and leaves her perch to attend the feeder.

The Breeze Mailbox Lundbreck Cornfest Lundbreck’s Cornfest will be held this Saturday, Aug. 25. The day will start off with a pancake breakfast, hosted by the MD of Pincher Creek councillors in the Lundbreck hall, from 8 to 10 a.m. Admission is by silver collection. There will be entertainment throughout the breakfast.

From 10:30 a.m. until about 4 p.m, all activities will move over to Patton Park, on the west side of Lundbreck. A concession will open at 11 and burgers, pop, bottled water, Powerade and, of course, Taber corn will be available. Once again, the ladies from the Eastern Star will be selling their yummy homemade pies and tarts. If anyone is willing to help out at the concession or shuck corn, please let Dan Cleland, George Dowson or Anne Molnar know. Any help is most appreciated.

If anyone is interested in starting and looking after horseshoes, bocce or kids games, again, please let Dan, George or Anne know and we will try to have whatever is needed for these activities. The beach volleyball net is still up if anyone wants to play, and we have volleyballs available. A slip-andslide type water slide and a sprinkler will be there for the kids to cool off in. Last year, we even had some of the ball players running through the sprinkler because it was over 30 degrees that day.

There will be a baseball tournament at the Patton Park fields, from about 10:30 a.m. until well into the afternoon. If anyone would like to enter a team, please call Norm Hilbert to give him a heads up and for making up the game schedule. If you would like to play, just show up at the field. Both men and women must be on a team.

A pig roast supper will take place at 6 p.m. in the Lundbreck hall. Only 120 tickets are available for this supper, at $6 each, regardless of age. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are now on sale at O’bies.

They will also be available at the breakfast and at the park, unless they are all sold prior to Saturday. Get yours early to avoid disappointment. If anyone is interested in donating a salad to this supper, it would be greatly appreciated. Last year, some members of the Lundbreck Citizens Council brought salads, but we ran short. Any help during and after the supper would also be greatly appreciated.

Presently, 2,400 out of 3,000 tickets are already sold for our annual 50/50 ticket fundraiser. They are $1 each and can be purchased from O’bies, as well as from some of the Citizen Council members. If we sell all 3,000, $1,500 will be the prize for some lucky winner. We will be selling them throughout the breakfast and into the afternoon if we have not sold out beforehand. If we sell out early, the draw will be made during the afternoon of Cornfest. If we sell throughout the supper, the draw will be made that evening.

Get yours now to avoid disappointment.

Proceeds from this fundraiser, the breakfast and the supper will be put towards upkeep and maintenance of Lundbreck Community Hall.

It is suggested that you bring a lawn chair for the Patton Park activities, and we ask that you please leave your pet at home.

By Tina Webber I wanted to write about Shootin’ the Breeze, which turns one year old on Sept.

14.

I know it must have started as a thought in the mind of someone with the talent and background to cultivate that thought and turn it into the paper you are reading.

I have to give credit to Shannon Robin for doing just that. No, I am not trying to win brownie points. That’s just the way I feel.

Most do not know the amount of work it takes to cover events happening in the area, write articles, handle advertisements, pictures and submitted pieces, fit it all into a weekly publication, distribute it to you – then start all over again for the next week.

I have come to respect her vision for the paper and her ability to strictly adhere to that vision. This paper has become a success in a short time because of her ingenuity and

hard work.

I had never met Shannon before writing for Shootin’ the Breeze. I was introduced to the paper by Gerry and Dorothy Smith, who thought the direction and content of the paper would mesh with my writing.

And the rest is, as they say, history.

I am not one who believes in coincidence, but find the chain of events worth taking note of. I previously wrote a column for another publication, but eventually found it necessary to quit. It was not an easy decision to make, but one I do not rue. It was two days afterward that I was asked to do a newsletter for Vista Village (which I still do), then directed to Shootin’ the Breeze, which had started a few months before.

Please join me in congratulating Shannon and the team she put together, because the kudos belongs to her.

Producers of The Right Kind of Wrong, a romantic comedy starring Ryan Kwanten and Sara Canning, are looking for men, women and children from 12 to 70 to act as extras in a barbecue scene.

Filming will take place Sept. 17 to 21 at Willow Bend Ranch, giving locals a chance to shine.

Lego life in Pincher Creek Eight kids aged six to 14 entered their Lego creations, based on the theme Life in Pincher Creek, in a successful contest sponsored by the Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce. “These Lego creations really gave us a good idea of what kids associate to Pincher Creek, from the many outdoor activities such as dirt biking, swimming and gardening to the different industries such as ranching, tourism and wind energy,” says the Chamber’s Dylon Barber. The kids did a great job portraying life in Pincher Creek, so judging was a tough task. Zackery Renschler was the first-place winner with his re-creation of Pincher Creek shown above. Cruising Waterton

A bald eagle looks down from its high treetop perch at Upper Waterton Lake.

The smooth surface of Upper Waterton Lake was disturbed only by the wooden hull of the M.V. International, as about 30 passengers embarked on a two-hour tour Monday.

It was a beautiful evening with only a slight breeze. Such calmness is rare at Waterton Lakes National Park, where the wind has earned a bad reputation.

If it wasn’t for the haze in the sky, blurring our view of the majestic mountains, it would have been a perfect trip.

Capt. Phil Ruppel manned the helm as we cruised to Goat Haunt, Mont., assisted by crew members Matthew Kretz and Jack Gourlay.

It was Jack’s turn to provide commentary, and he did so in an easy-flowing and entertaining manner.

With six seasons of Waterton tours under his belt and an interest in local history, Jack readily answered our questions while teaching us about geology, history and bears.

For many, it was their first time on a boat as well as their first time in the mountains. There were international visitors, others from as close as Calgary, and Dennis and I checking things out in the back yard.

Even though we’ve taken our own boat on the same journey, we came away with a new appreciation of a familiar place.

Jack pointed out rare rock formations we hadn’t noticed before and explained how it was possible for the oldest rocks, some as old as 1.6 billion years, to make their way to the surface while the newer rock is buried under the deep waters.

We knew the lake was very deep, but had no idea that between Dead Horse Point and Blacktail Point the depth is 487 feet!

We were able to see one of only 24 glaciers remaining in the park. We would have assumed it was simply a patch of snow if Jack hadn’t told us differently. There are no glaciers on the Canadian side of the border, and it’s estimated they will all be gone from the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park by 2020.

Jack shared all kinds of neat trivia to go along with the history, and we had the chance to watch two bald eagles and a black bear going about their business.

Actually, I think the eagles were watching us from their perches way up in the trees.

If you have an opportunity to check out a shoreline cruise, remember to take your camera, binoculars and a sweater. For a daytime cruise, you may also want to pack your passport if you’d like to venture much beyond the boat once you reach Goat Haunt.

You just might be amazed by what you don’t know about our local national park.

“Desert Reckoning: A Town Sheriff, a Mojave Hermit, and the Biggest Manhunt in Modern California History”

by Deanne Stillman (Nation Books, $26) Reviewed by Larry Cox Few writers capture the rhythm and brutality of the American Southwest quite like Deanne Stillman. Her previous book, “Twentynine Palms,” has become a cult classic.

“Desert Reckoning,” which began as an article in Rolling Stone magazine, focuses on a true event that unfolded in the Antelope Valley during the summer of 2003. The region sprawls across more than 2,200 square miles that includes the Mojave Desert.

At the center of the story is Donald Charles Kueck, a man who loved animals but hated civilization. One hot August day, the desert hermit was confronted by California Deputy Sheriff Stephen Sorensen.

The result was Sorensen’s mur-

der, which triggered a week-long manhunt, the biggest in modern California history.

How this lawman and outlaw collided in the wilds of 21st-century Los Angeles County unfolds like classic Western pulp fiction. Its irony is that both Sorensen and Kueck loved the desert, and the murder was senseless.

When the deputy approached Kueck’s trailer, it brought into direct conflict a man trying to live free, and a solitary sheriff who patrolled one of the last frontiers in America.

As Sorensen fell mortally wounded, Kueck fled into the desert, even though the odds of escape were clearly stacked against him. In pursuit were members of the DEA, FBI, Air Force and the LA County SWAT team, as well as thousands of cops on horseback, in vehicles and on foot.

How Kueck managed to avoid this incredible team for even seven days was no small achievement.

Stillman captures all of the grit and drama of this sweeping story set against the backdrop of the Mojave Desert, truly the main character in this book. When she describes the terrain, the heat and even cranky rattlesnakes, it has the ring of authenticity. Readers will feel the chap of the heat and inhospitality of the desert on every page. By Steve Becker DUCK SOUP The holdup play, whether it is used by declarer or a defender, is one of the most effective plays in bridge.

It comes in a variety of forms and, properly applied, can completely alter the outcome of a deal.

Today’s hand, from a national team championship, provides an unusual example of the holdup play. At both tables, declarer wound up in four spades, and both Wests led a club.

At the first table, declarer put up dummy’s ace and returned a club, planning to ruff one or two of his club losers in dummy. But East had no trouble diagnosing South’s intention. He won the club with the king and played the ace and another spade. Declarer eventually lost two more clubs and finished down one.

At the second table, South anticipated that the defenders would switch to trumps if he played the ace and

another club. So instead of taking the first trick with the ace, he played low from dummy. This simple maneuver rendered the defense helpless.

If East, after winning the club, returned anything but a trump, declarer would win and ruff two clubs in dummy to finish with 11 tricks.

So East played the ace and another trump, just as his counterpart had at the other table -- but this time, to no avail.

Declarer won the second trump, cashed the A-K of hearts and ruffed a heart. When the opposing hearts divided 3-3, South had the rest of the tricks, using the still-present ace of clubs as an entry to collect dummy’s two good hearts.

Once again, a bunch of annoying young people clamoring for a party by a body of water are exposed to an army of hungry, computer-generated piranhas. Too many winks at the audience and not enough talent behind the camera make this wannabe shocker an irredeemable waste of time.

It starts when Segel proposes to Blunt by the San Francisco bay, and everything is great. And from there, the delays and little surprises keep on coming, and the length of the movie extends to over two hours.

Segel is proving himself a formidable writer/star. He plays the loveable goof like he was born for it. Blunt is adorable and has no trouble with onscreen chemistry. Chemistry seems to come to her so easily she might as well be hydrogen. If you can handle the run time and get past the sagging middle section, “The Five-Year Engagement” just might pay off.

“Safe” (R) -- Jason Statham is right where he needs to be on this one -- a save

get-what-you-paid-for straightforward action flick that delivers. This time he’s a beaten-down cage fighter who ran afoul of the Russian mafia and lost his family. When he notices the gangsters who ruined his life are attacking a little girl, Statham springs into action without knowing the whole story.

This is the pasta with meat sauce of action flicks -- nearly impossible to mess up. The recipe is simple: A washed-up tough guy protecting an innocent from the pointless cruelty of an evil organization must shoot, punch, drive and grimace his way to redemption. Easy Two-Toned Garden Soup “The best tasting soups of summer are the simplest to make,” said 28-year-old chef Becca Berroteran recently to a group of moms at Mission Springs Conference Center in Scotts Valley, Calif. “And each bowlful can look like a work of art, too,” she added.

In a nod to her Mexican heritage, we watched attentively as she ladled red pepper soup into one side of a soup bowl while at the same time ladling a fresh zucchini soup in the other.

“Busy families can make a two-toned garden soup in less than an hour on the stove or microwave,” she said as she grabbed a squeeze bottle to demonstrate the garnish. “Kids love to top the servings with cream sauce designs and swirls or let them simply add popcorn or crunched chips.”

Here are the basic how-tos. Add your favorite fresh herbs and seasonings to make the soup your own, and then have fun impressing your next dinner guests.

TWO-TONED GARDEN SOUP Zucchini Soup ingredients 3 medium zucchini, roughly chopped 2 cups chicken broth 1/2 cup chopped yellow onion 1/2 tablespoon chopped fresh garlic Salt and pepper Bring the zucchini, broth, onions, garlic and seasonings to a boil, stirring frequently. Simmer until zucchini is soft, about 20 minutes.

Use immersion hand blender to blend.

Roasted Red Pepper Soup ingredients 2 (12-ounce) jars fire roasted red peppers, drained 2 cups beef broth Tapatio hot sauce (optional) Cook peppers and beef stock until heated through. Use immersion hand blender to blend.

Ladle hot soups simultaneously into each half of a soup bowl, then “paint” designs with avocado cream sauce.

Avocado Cream Sauce Stir together 1/4 mashed ripe avocado, 2 tablespoons sour cream, 1/8 teaspoon cumin and a splash of milk to make it “squeezable.”

Spoon into a squeeze bottle and create these easy designs on top of the two-tone soup.

Makes 8 to 10 servings.

Hearts Squeeze out several dime-size dots. Dip into the middle of a dot with a chopstick or skewer and drag down to form a heart.

Continue to the next dot.

Starburst Squeeze a quarter-size dot in the center of the soup. Dip a toothpick in the center and lightly drag out to make a line. Repeat in all directions.

ABC’s Squeeze the shape of the first letter of names of each guest on the soup. Set the bowls around the table when you are ready to eat for edible place cards.

Swollen Ankles Have Many Causes DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a diabetic male, age 96, with many aches and pains but no high blood pressure. I have low cholesterol and am in control of my diabetes. In the past few weeks, I’ve noticed swelling of my ankles and feet. I have been taking two water pills a day for it. I never use salt or eat salty foods. What can you suggest for me? -- S.S. ANSWER: That swelling is edema, and it has many causes. One is sitting for long periods with the legs dangling down. With the legs in that position, gravity pulls fluid from the legs’ blood vessels. Treatment for this kind of edema consists in elevating the legs. Every hour, lie down for 10 minutes with pillows under your legs and feet so that they are above heart level. When sitting, squeeze the leg muscles over and over. Muscle contractions stop the oozing of fluids from the blood vessels. And take a morning and afternoon walk. Elastic hose can keep fluid in blood vessels and out of the surrounding tissues.

Dilated leg veins -- varicose veins -- promote edema. A clot in a leg vein is another cause. That’s usually quite painful, and you’d be aware that something is going on if you had a clot. Liver ailments can lead to edema. The liver makes a blood protein, albumin, that keeps fluid in circulation. With a low production of this protein, fluid leaks out of vessels. Kidney failure is another reason why edema occurs. Medicines can lead to it. The popular nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines such as Advil and Aleve are two examples. So are medicines called calcium channel blockers, such as nifedipine and verapamil. If you increased the dose of your water pill on your own, you shouldn’t. You can develop a potassium deficiency from overuse of water pills.

Try the things I mentioned. See if they bring down the swelling. If they don’t, you’ll have to consult your doctor.

Nectarine and Cherry Crisp The topping is actually oatmeal cookie dough! You can prepare it up to a day ahead and store it in the refrigerator.

1/2 cup sugar 3 tablespoons cornstarch 3 pounds (about 10 medium) ripe nectarines, each cut into 6 wedges 1 1/2 pounds dark, sweet cherries, pitted 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons margarine or butter, cold, cut into small pieces Oatmeal Cookie-Crisp Topping (below) 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. In small bowl, with wire whisk or fork, mix sugar and cornstarch.

2. In large bowl, toss nectarines, cherries, lemon juice and sugar mixture until fruit is evenly coated.

3. Spoon fruit mixture into 13-by-9inch glass baking dish; dot with margarine or butter. Cover with foil and bake 40 to 50 minutes until mixture is gently bubbling.

4. Meanwhile, prepare Oatmeal CookieCrisp Topping. Cover and refrigerate until ready to use.

5. Drop topping by scant 1/4 cups over hot fruit. Bake, uncovered, 20 to 25 minutes until topping is browned. Cool slightly on wire rack to serve warm. Or, cool completely to serve later. Reheat if

desired.

OATMEAL COOKIE-CRISP TOPPING: In large bowl, with mixer at mediumhigh speed, beat 2/3 cup packed light brown sugar and 6 tablespoons margarine or butter (3/4 stick), softened, until smooth. Add 1 large egg and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract; beat until light and fluffy. With spoon, stir in 1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats, uncooked, 3/4 cup all-purpose flour, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon baking soda. Serves 12. ? Each serving: About 400 calories, 11g total fat (2g saturated), 18mg cholesterol, 185mg sodium, 63g carbohydrate, 6g protein.

Grilled Tuna and Cucumber Salad In this light dish, savory teriyaki-marinated tuna steak is grilled lightly and then paired with a refreshing cucumber salad.

1/4 cup teriyaki sauce 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley leaves 2/3 cup olive oil 1 teaspoon olive oil Salt

Pepper 2 (8 ounces each) fresh tuna steaks 2 medium cucumbers, peeled, seeded and thinly sliced 1/4 cup white wine vinegar 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro leaves 1/2 small onion, thinly sliced, optional 1. In a glass pie plate or bowl, combine teriyaki sauce, lemon juice, parsley, 2/3 cup oil and 1/4 teaspoon black pepper.

Add tuna steaks, making sure fish is completely covered by marinade. Cover; refrigerate at least 1 hour or overnight.

2. In bowl, combine cucumbers, vinegar, cilantro, 1 teaspoon oil, 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper, and onion if using. Cover; refrigerate at least 1 hour or overnight.

3. Remove tuna from marinade; discard marinade. Preheat ridged grill pan or prepare outdoor grill for covered direct grilling on medium-high. Cook tuna 4 to 6 minutes or until browned on both sides but still pink in center, turning once.

4. Drain cucumber salad. Break tuna into chunks and add to salad. Serves 2.

The George Clooney/Sandra Bullock flick “Gravity” has been delayed until sometime in 2013. Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Nick Nolte, Emma Stone and Sean Penn won’t be seen in “Gangster Squad” until January.

Sylvester Stallone’s “Bullet to the Head,” Brad Pitt’s “World War Z,” Jeremy Renner’s “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters” and Channing Tatum’s “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” also have been pushed to next year. By the time these films come out, we may have read so much about them we’ll think we’ve already seen them!

By Samantha Mazzotta Use Bolts to Anchor Pictures to Wall Q: I have to hang some heavier pictures, and I’m a little confused by all the choices in different kinds of bolts.

What options do I have? -- Frank in Tuscon A: Depending on the weight of the item you’re hanging on the wall, a variety of bolts are available -- but the most common are expansion bolts or anchors (also known as Molly bolts, for some reason), and toggle bolts.

Both kinds of bolts are helpful in anchoring somewhat heavy objects to drywall when a stud can’t be located or used.

Expansion bolts have an exterior plastic sheath, which is straight when inserted into a hole drilled into the wall, but expand behind the wall once placed. They’re designed for heavy objects like large framed pictures, mirrors or shelves.

Toggle bolts have metal wings that unfold once inserted on the other side of the drywall, providing a sturdy backing for much heavier objects like small cabinets.

To use an expansion bolt, mark the spot on the wall where you plan to hang a picture or heavy item. Drill a hole at the width specified to fit the

expansion bolt. With the metal screw inserted fully into the expansion sheath, push the bolt through the hole or gently tap in with a hammer.

Turn the screw head clockwise until it’s tight -- this action expands the sheath so that it sits snug against the wall.

Unscrew the metal screw from the expansion bolt sheath and mount the picture by inserting the screw through the picture’s hanger or screw hole and back into the expansion bolt.

To use a toggle bolt, first drill a hole in the wall at the width specified. Unscrew the metal flange (the springloaded expansion unit) from the metal screw. Run the screw through the screw hole or the picture’s hanger, then screw the metal flange back onto the screw, on the opposite side of the hanger or screw hole.

Pinch the flange closed with one hand and push it through the drilled hole while guiding the picture into position. Once the flange is all the way through, pull the metal screw until you can feel the flange pressing against the back side of the wall.

Tighten the metal screw until it and the picture are secure.

HOME TIP: Metal or wooden studs are located approximately 16 inches apart on average.

PHOTO CREDIT: bobsredmill.com photo Take Your Oats Out to Dinner While oatmeal is a wonderful way to add fiber, grains, nutrients to your diet, most folks think of oatmeal as a breakfast food. It’s time to take oatmeal beyond breakfast. Oatmeal is a whole grain because it contains all of the parts of the oat grain, including the bran, endosperm and germ. The interesting thing is that when we eat the regular oatmeal most of us grew up with, we aren’t eating the grain in its original form. We are usually eating rolled oats. Rolled oats have been steamed and flattened. That process decreases the cooking time so old-fashioned oatmeal can be prepared in 10 to 25 minutes. Quick-cooking oats that can be prepared in 3 to 5 minutes have been cut even more finely to reduce cooking time.

Some people prefer steel-cut oats. The primary difference between steel cut oats and rolled oats is the shape of the grain.

Steel-cut oats are not flattened -- the grain is cut into thirds and then packaged for sale. When preparing steel-cut oats, it’s best to use 4 cups of water to each cup of oats. The cooking time for steel-cut oats is 30 to 40 minutes. Steelcut oats have a chewy texture and hearty flavor.

All oatmeal is a good source of fiber, magnesium and thiamine. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, iron and copper. Oatmeal carries a health claim on the food label because of the fiber content. The health claim is that oatmeal -- along with a diet low in saturated fat

and cholesterol -- may reduce the risk of heart disease. Oatmeal is a good source of soluble fiber, which acts as a sponge in the digestive tract to help remove cholesterol from the body.

Adding oatmeal to these delicious Salmon Cakes boosts the nutrients and adds a delicious texture to the dish. The Yogurt Dill Sauce complements the Salmon Cakes and is the perfect topping if you prefer to serve the Salmon Cakes on a bun.

SALMON CAKES AND YOGURT DILL SAUCE Yogurt Dill Sauce: 1/2 cup plain nonfat yogurt 1/3 cup seeded, chopped tomato 1/3 cup seeded, chopped cucumber 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh dill or 1 teaspoon dried dill weed 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Salmon Cakes: 1 can (14-3/4 ounces) pink salmon, drained, skin and bones removed 3/4 cup oatmeal, quick-cooking or rolled, uncooked 1/3 cup skim milk 1/3 cup liquid egg substitute with yolk or 1 egg, lightly beaten 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion 2 tablespoons minced garlic

1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh dill or 1 teaspoon dried dill weed 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1. In small bowl, combine sauce ingredients; mix well. Cover and chill while making salmon cakes.

2. In a medium bowl, combine ingredients for salmon cakes; mix well. Let stand 5 minutes. Shape into 6 oval patties.

3. Lightly spray large nonstick skillet with cooking spray. Cook salmon cakes over medium heat 3 to 4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and heated through. Serve with sauce.

Acupuncture for Pets?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently read an advertisement by a pet hospital that is offering acupuncture for pets. Does this even work for pets? I’m skeptical. -- Janice T., Orlando, Fla. DEAR JANICE: I can’t say for sure, but the idea of providing acupuncture treatment for pets is intriguing. Acupuncture has been shown to have positive results for

humans trying to manage pain, and some anecdotal reports indicate that acupuncture might help reduce pain in animals, as well.

Wadsworth Animal Hospital in Lakewood, Colo., for example, recently reported that as many as 75 percent of the pets in its care treated with acupuncture experienced “a significant or major improvement, although some symptoms may remain.”

The hospital used acupuncture to treat pets suffering from arthritis, hip dysplasia, nerve damage or other chronic health conditions.

Pet acupuncture sounds pretty odd, and it’s really a new type of treatment for pets, coming into vogue just in the past few decades.

But it’s not the only holistic pet treatment out there that looks to help improve pets’ health without the use of drugs or surgery. And it’s growing in popularity: some

800 pet acupuncturists are registered with the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture (http:// www.aava.org), the Washington Post reports, an increase of 600 since 2002.

So, how do you find a qualified acupuncturist for your pet? The AAVA has a listing on its site, but be sure to ask questions of the pet acupuncturist you find locally. He or she should be certified to practice veterinary medicine as well as veterinary acupuncture.

several assassination attempts against him thanks to the superior handling performance of the presidential automobile, the Citroen DS 19. During the attack, a hail of 140 bullets shattered the car’s rear window and punctured all four of its tires.

• On Aug. 26, 1974, Charles Lindbergh, the first man to accomplish a solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927, dies in Maui, Hawaii, at the age of 72. To reduce weight on the plane during his famous flight, everything that was not essential was left out: radio, gas gauge, night-flying lights, navigation equipment and parachute.
