My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin “No way,” I blurted aloud as I read the message that had just appeared in my email inbox.

It was Wednesday afternoon, and I was reading a Government of Alberta press release with the headline “Government cancels funding for police training college.”

I was dumbstruck as I reread the words sent from Edmonton that dealt a huge blow to Fort Macleod and all of southwestern Alberta.

“The feedback received from police indicated that larger police forces were confident in their existing training facilities that have provided exceptional police training to date,” the report said.

I think most people were stunned at first, with the natural follow-up reaction being anger and a huge sense of betrayal.

Social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter, along with radio and television news were abuzz with criticisms and condemnation.

It was appalling to hear the next day that Fort Macleod’s mayor, Shawn Patience, had learned the news the same way – through a press release. That’s brutal.

Both Premier Alison Redford and Jonathan Denis, minister of justice and solicitor general, made visits to Pincher Creek in the past two weeks.

Were their visits a calculated opportunity to schmooze before the big announcement was made?

It’s difficult to believe that the cancellation hadn’t already been determined at the time of their visits.

I met the premier and chatted briefly with her at the Rotary pancake breakfast Aug. 18 in Pincher Creek. Because Shootin’ the Breeze isn’t about news reporting, I observed from the sidelines as Ms. Redford talked animatedly with people and posed for pictures.

Many media photos of the premier aren’t flat-

tering but, in contrast, I was struck by her easy laughter and how relaxed she seemed. I captured several lovely images of moments where she has a glowing smile on her face.

Now I’m wondering if what I photographed was simply the so-called ugly face of politics.

A huge can of worms has burst open with the police college cancellation. Many are claiming it’s payback to our constituency for electing Wildrose MLA Pat Stier. There are strong opinions and accusations coming from all directions, it seems.

Politics is not my forte, and I’m okay with that.

But, over the past year I’ve come to know many people in Fort Macleod, and I know how important the police college is to the community as well as to southwestern Alberta as a whole. I believe the negative reaction to the cancellation would be the same regardless of which party was behind the decision.

There have been issues right from the announcement of the project six years ago, and it was a huge relief when the deal appeared to finally be sealed with the construction contract awarded two months ago.

Money has already been spent to the tune of $4 million, contracts have been signed, promises were made, and the town was poised for growth on many levels. There’s talk of legal action, and calls for the decision to be reversed.

A huge commitment has been broken, and the situation has attracted national attention.

There would have been spin-off for businesses throughout our corner of the province if the anticipated 1,400 trainees per year had come to Fort Macleod.

It’s impossible to speculate how this scenario will play out and what the long-term implications will be.

This isn’t the positive bit of writing that usually fills my corner, but it’s what has been foremost in my mind this week. I’ve lost some faith – so much for promises.

Dan Cleland and Margaret Jones Lundbreck Cornfest ended on a high note when the draw for the winner of the 50/50 fundraiser was made.

The lucky winner was Lyndsey Jones from Calgary. Dan Cleland, president of Lundbreck Citizens Council, presented a $1,442 cheque to Margaret Jones, who was happy to accept it on behalf of her daughter.

The money raised from this draw will go towards the maintenance and running of Lundbreck Hall.

After school could be awesome!

By Shannon Robin Scott Warris, president of the board of Boys and Girls Club of Crowsnest Pass, says “it’s looking very positive” that the club will be able to bring back their after-school program this fall.

With $25,000 sponsorship from Teck, $20,000 from United Way, $20,000 from club efforts, and FCSS as the main source of funding, Scott is confident that the after-school program will be up and running shortly.

“We feel this is a top priority, and want to make sure it happens,” he said.

The last element to fall into place at this point is to secure space in one of the local schools.

Details will be posted on the club website at www.bgccnp.com, as soon as things are finalized, and information will be available at mass registration night, Sept. 12.

The fee-based after-school program is open to children aged six to 13, and will continue to have an outdoor and active focus as the recent summer camp did.

Another huge step for the club is establishment of a permanent base. The group has been working with the municipal library and, later this month, administrator Kim Miskulin will be offering regular hours from this location along with a teen program.

Executive members, parents and supporters of the club have had a busy summer of fundraising activities. They manned concessions at Sinister 7 and Rum Runner Days, sold lemonade at the local parades and ran a successful duck derby.

They fell short of their $30,000 target, but successful restructuring of the summer camp program makes up for the deficit. The program sustained itself, so all funds raised are available to carry forward to the afterschool program.

Scott described the camp as “a completely new version,” in this, its third year. “We’ve been through an ongoing process of change – figuring out what works and how to cut costs.”

Summer camp was led by Nicole Pearse with assistance from Dakota Goddu, Aaron, Brown, Maeghan Jerry and Jillian Montalbetti.

Watching the interactions between the kids and their leaders at the windup barbecue, it was clear some great bonds had formed over the past two months.

“We had a very good team this year,” Scott said.

“Every one (of the student assistants) has said they’d like to come back. The way Nicole structured it was so much fun!”

“We focused on things that were active and healthy,” Scott said. “My daughter came home exhausted at the end of the day, and after this summer is much more energetic.”

There was a change to the fee structure for summer camp, and 25 sponsors came forward to cover fees for families needing assistance. “No one was turned away,” Scott said proudly. Nicole also pointed out that the number of children attending doubled this year compared to last.

Outdoor activity was a key component of the camp, and the calendar was jam-packed every week with fun stuff like canoeing, kayaking, swimming, hiking, biking and day trips.

“We got a lot of kids out doing things they wouldn’t normally do,” Nicole said with a smile. “The bike days were awesome when the kids rode up and down the trails.”

Everyone had their favourite activities, and for Nicole a field trip to Window Mountain Lake, bike days and kayaking were special highlights.

“There were a lot of crazy days at the beginning,” she said. “The staff were all great, and all did really well.”

Nicole’s goal was to make the camp about doing, not just coming and hanging out. The kids were outside every day, and she said “some whined at first, but everyone had fun in the end.”

If your kids had fun at summer camp, chances are good that they’ll be able to enjoy the same types of activities with Nicole after school this year.

Boys and Girls Club of Crowsnest Pass held a wrap-up barbecue for their summer camp program Thursday. Dinner was courtesy of John and Erika Warlow of Bamboo Bistro and Black Rock Pizza. The kids took a break from playing to finish off the night with a couple of ice cream cakes. The kids gained a new appreciation of outdoor play through camp activities, and it was awesome to see that a highlight of the evening was climbing up, then running down, the steep hill at Fireman’s Park in Bellevue. If a show of hands means the kids had a great time at summer camp, then the mural below speaks for itself.

Too many kitties

The Pincher Creek Humane Society is full to its capacity for cats and kittens looking for new homes.

Currently there are 17 cats at the shelter, all of the foster home spots are full, and others have been moved to PetSmart in Lethbridge.

With no room available, co-ordinator Jessica Gascoyne now refers people to other shelters. Unfortunately, the story is the same, because they’re all overpopulated.

“We’re really pushing people to spay and neuter their pets,” Jessica says. “If they did, we wouldn’t have this problem.”

Recently the shelter had to turn away three kittens, since there are no open spots. Jessica passed on contact sources for other shelters, but the unhappy person still felt it necessary to post negative comments about PCHS on Facebook.

“It was really unfair because we do our best,” Jessica says. “All of our cages are full, the foster homes are full, and we can only do so much.”

This summer has been a typical one, with more animals coming in than being adopted out. Shelters across the country are faced with the same dilemma of not having the resources to deal with the number of animals arriving at their doors.

Each animal has a distinct personality – some are shy, while others immediately demand your attention.

“It’s hard not to form attachments, but you hope they’re going to a good home,” Jessica says. “They are all well cared for and well fed, but it’s still sad to see them here.”

Jessica is new to her position, and in the past month she has considerably raised the profile of PCHS through social-media publicity. You can like the shelter on Facebook, follow the tweets on Twitter or catch some video clips on YouTube.

Right now there are four main foster families, along with others who step up in emergencies. These volunteers provide care and support to animals in their homes while the shelter provides food and covers all associated costs.

Volunteer opportunities exist at the shelter as well – walking dogs, playing with cats, grooming and simply sharing affection. All volunteers are required

to complete some basic paperwork and have a security check. Young helpers need to bring a parent along until they turn 18.

If you’re interested in becoming a foster parent to an animal in need, or volunteering in other areas, please give Jessica a call at 403-627-5191.

Contributions make a huge difference to the PCHS, which relies on grants, adoption fees and donations to cover costs. Current needs include kennels or cat carriers, cat condos, scratching posts and toys for dogs and cats. Donations of food, blankets, towels, bed sheets and cat litter are always appreciated as well. Jessica isn’t able to accept anything opened, though, so if your dog doesn’t like the new brand of food you brought home, you’re best to pass it on to a friend if the bag or can has already been opened.

Animals sometimes find their way to the shelter through the kindness of a Good Samaritan. Butters, the kitten pictured above, is such as case. It’s hard to imagine this sweet little bundle of fur being left to make it on her own.

In other situations, owners may need to surrender their pets. Reasons might include allergies, a move to a new place that doesn’t allow pets, or incompatibility.

The owner is asked to provide information such as the animal’s age, temperament and medical history, and is charged a fee of $25.

If you’re interested in adopting an animal, you’ll be asked to complete an application that goes forward to the adoption committee. If you’re a renter, the committee will touch base with your landlord to make sure pets are allowed. They will also check with the local veterinarians to see if they can vouch for you as a previous pet owner who has provided good care in the past.

Once approved, the cost to take your new pet home is $85 for a cat, $250 for most dogs, and $200 for senior dogs. This includes all vaccinations and spaying or neutering.

“There’s a perception that we’re expensive, but vaccinations cost about $200, as does spaying or neutering,” Jessica says.

You’re welcome to visit PCHS at 1068 Kettles Street, in the industrial area of Pincher Creek, from 8 a.m. to noon and 1:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, and from 8 a.m. to noon and 12:30 to 3 p.m. Saturdays.

Both the Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass swimming pools were invaded by buccaneers Friday as pirate-themed parties wrapped up the summer swimming season. Niamh Wilson is a pretty, young lady with a lot of talent. She plays violin, draws, paints, dances, acts and has a thirst for life. She lives near Toronto, is going into Grade 10, and is currently playing in The Young and Prodigious Spivet, being filmed in the Pincher Creek area.

In August, Niamh visited Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village in Pincher Creek, and some of the recreated false-front buildings captured her imagination. She took less than an hour to create a memorable pencil sketch of them.

“This is the beginning of a drawing,” she said, referring to the pencil sketch in a fresh sketchbook.

Niamh generously offered to donate the drawing to the Pincher Creek and District Historical Society, and president Colleen Cyr was delighted to accept.

“It’s a gorgeous drawing,” Colleen says. “We plan to have it matted and framed, then auction it off.”

The sale will be part of fundraising efforts to continue work on the east side of the buildings depicted in Niamh’s drawing.

“Audrey Hepburn: A Charmed Life”

by Robyn Karney (Arcade Publishing, $24.95) Reviewed by Larry Cox Audrey Hepburn was born Eda van Heemstra in Brussels, Belgium, in 1929. Despite a rather complicated childhood in Nazi-occupied Holland, she trained as a ballet-dancer in Amsterdam and later at the Marie Rambert school in London, where she made both her film and stage debuts in 1948. But it wasn’t until three years later in the Broadway production of “Gigi” that she truly hit her stride.

After winning acclaim on Broadway, she won an Oscar for her film performance in “Roman Holiday.” She quickly became an international celebrity, and throughout the 1950s and ‘60s was box-office gold. Three of her most popular film roles were in “Sabrina,” “The Nun’s Story” and “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” -- all Oscar nominations.

Although Hepburn died of cancer

at her home in Switzerland in 1993, during her lifetime she left an indelible mark on our modern culture.

In a new biography, Robyn Karney, editor of “Who’s Who in Hollywood,” captures all of the delicate, intangible facets of this remarkable woman. The 177 photographs chosen by Karney are stunning. Photographer Richard Avedon summed up the elegance of Hepburn when he said, “I am, and forever will be, devastated by the gift of Audrey Hepburn before my camera. I cannot lift her to greater heights. She is already there. I can only record; I cannot interpret her.

There is no going further than who she is. She has achieved the ultimate portrait.” Indeed.

Hepburn was more than an actress and international beauty. She worked tirelessly as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and was directly involved in numerous charities, especially those that aided children.

It was this devotion to helping the poorest children of the Third World that set her apart from many others in the entertainment industry.

By Steve Becker THE BIRD-IN-THE-HAND PRINCIPLE When a contract can be guaranteed by adopting a particular method of play, it stands to reason that it would be wrong to choose another line of play that jeopardizes the contract. This principle is self-evident, but it is sometimes not so easy to apply in actual practice.

Consider this deal where West leads a heart against three notrump. How should declarer proceed? If South does not give the matter much thought, he wins East’s king with the ace and leads a diamond to the queen, losing to the ace. Back comes a heart, and West’s suit becomes established.

When the diamonds turn out to be divided 4-1, South goes down one because West has the ace of clubs as an entry to his hearts. The outcome could easily be attributed to bad luck, since it takes a very unlikely combination of events to sink the contract. However,

this view dodges the real issue.

This is one of those hands where declarer can completely control his fate by playing his cards correctly. Luck is not a factor. To ensure the contract, all South need do is to take East’s king of hearts with the ace, lead a spade to dummy and return a low diamond.

If East has the ace and goes up with it, South has at least nine tricks. If East has the ace and does not go up, South wins with the jack and attacks clubs to assure nine tricks.

If West has the ace of diamonds, he can win South’s jack but cannot effectively return a heart. Anything else West does gives declarer time to establish two club tricks before West’s hearts can be established.

Superficially, it seems unimportant whether the first diamond lead comes from the South hand or from dummy, but in the actual deal, the contract stands or falls on this decision. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Cool Summer Pudding From England While the 2012 Summer Olympics in London were in full swing on screens across the U.S. and the world, I loved how the cameras put viewers like us in the middle of the action, as if we were paddling our own kayaks through a white-water course or leaping with the women gymnasts for the gold. But amidst all the excitement, there was one thing we missed out on -- the smells and tastes of the local English food enjoyed by spectators attending the event.

I decided to make the Olympics a cultural experience at home and created a taste of London by preparing an old English late-summer dessert called “Summer Pudding.” For the Brits, the word “pudding” (“pud” for short) actually means “dessert,” and this fun recipe from across the pond can become a memorable finale to an August dinner. It’s full of fresh berries, and the easy prep doesn’t require any baking, so the kitchen stays cool. It’s a great use for day-old bread, too!

Kids love to take part in the easy prep, so gather the ingredients and enjoy this fresh, beautiful dessert while it’s still summer.

ENGLISH SUMMER PUDDING Ingredients: 16 slices of day-old, firm white bread,

without preservatives 6 cups assorted berries, such as blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries 1 cup sugar 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice Whipped cream 1. In a saucepan, combine berries, sugar and lemon juice. Stir over medium heat until berries release their juices, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and drain berries over a bowl, reserving the juice.

2. Line the inside of a 5-6 cup bowl with plastic wrap. Trim and discard crusts from the bread and cut slices diagonally into four pieces. Dip each triangle into the juice, then arrange on the bottom and in a continuous pattern around the inside of the bowl to create a pinwheel effect. Fill any gaps with more bread, saving some bread for the next step.

3. Fill the bread-lined bowl almost to the top with the drained berries. Place a single layer of the remaining bread on top of the berries to create a cover. Spoon

remaining juice evenly over the top.

4. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap, and then set a small plate on top that just fits inside the bowl. Set a heavy, 2-pound can on the plate to provide weight. Refrigerate overnight.

5. To serve, remove the can, plate and plastic wrap and carefully invert the colorful molded pudding onto a serving plate. Remove the plastic wrap liner.

Slice into wedges with a large spoon and serve with a dollop of whipped cream.

Slowing Macular Degeneration DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am an 82-year-old woman. My body cannot tolerate antibiotics, vitamins or painkillers. I am told I have macular degeneration and was advised to take Ocuvite once a day. Since you’re unable to tolerate vitamins, you’ll need to get these nutrients from foods. You might not be able to reach the high levels found in pills, but you’d be getting all the ingredients in those pills.

Beta carotene is found in colored vegetables like carrots and peppers, in dark-green vegetables and in colored fruits. Vitamin E is widely available in many foods: meats, nuts, cereal grains, wheat-germ oil and sunflower oil. You find vitamin C in citrus fruits, tomatoes, potatoes and broccoli. Zinc is in meats, shellfish, nuts and legumes, like peas. Copper is in shellfish, nuts and organ meats.

However, if a person is quite sensitive to caffeine, then that person should abstain from coffee.

There appears not to be any relationship between coffee drinking and artery hardening, artery obstruction or heart pumping. 4 large eggs 2 large egg whites Salt Pepper 4 8-inch whole-wheat tortillas 4 tablespoons goat cheese 3 1/2 ounces (about 7 cups) baby spinach 1 teaspoon canola oil 1 medium (about 1 cup) tomato, seeded and finely chopped 1 Hass avocado, finely chopped 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill leaves 1. 2. On microwave-safe plate, cover tortillas with damp paper towel. Microwave on high 30 seconds or until just warm and pliable.

on each tortilla; top with spinach.

4. In 12-inch nonstick skillet, heat oil on medium 1 minute. Add egg mixture. Cook 2 minutes or until almost set, stirring gently. Remove from heat; fold in tomato, avocado and 1/4 teaspoon salt.

5. Divide hot egg mixture among tortillas. Top with dill; fold in half.

PHOTO: Phyllis Diller HOLLYWOOD -- A little more than a year ago, I attended the 25th anniversary party for former film star Zsa Zsa Gabor and Prince Fredric Von Anhalt. She was bed-ridden and never appeared, but friends and celebrities still came to toast the Hollywood royalty.

I had a chance to chat there with the late Phyllis Diller, who left us on Aug. 20 at the age of 95. I recounted our meeting many years ago in New York just after she appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” As I took her picture, she asked me, “How do you like the boa I’m wearing?” It looked kind of ratty, but I said it was nice, to which she added, “I caught it under the sink this morning.” She was a very funny lady, on- or off-screen.

This year, Prince Frederic again invited friends to celebrate their anniversary, but there was a marked difference. Their Bel Air mansion has had a $300,000 face-lift, thanks to the Michael Douglas/Matt Damon HBO film, “Behind the Candelabra,” using the house and grounds as Liberace’s ornate mansion. To accomplish the makeover, they brought in two priceless chandeliers and Liberace’s grand piano from the Liberace museum in 8506 - 19th Avenue

Las Vegas. They put in new ‘60s white shag carpets, repainted the garden room and put silver metallic wallpaper on the ceilings. The pool was redone with a large “L” on the bottom with tile piano keys all around the pool. All of Zsa Zsa’s portraits had to be replaced with paintings of Liberace.

The film shot for a week, then shooting was suspended to allow all the paintings of Zsa Zsa to be put back for the party. Afterward, everything was switched again with portraits of Liberace for the final two weeks of shooting. On one shooting day, Michael Douglas visited with ZsaZsa in her bedroom, and they talked about the old Hollywood. Apparently, the footage shot by director Steven Soderbergh is so good that HBO is reconsidering showing it on HBO first and may release it to theaters instead.

The film also has Dan Aykroyd as Liberace’s long-time manager, Rob Lowe as the plastic surgeon who made over Liberace’s boy toy to look like a young Liberace, and Debbie Reynolds as his mother, Frances. On the plus side, for Prince Frederic, he was given a small role and shot three days on the picture.

Jones, Michael Douglas’ wife, said in an interview: “I caught Michael trying on some of my clothes and jewelry and told him to get his own!”

‘Dry Basement’ Springs a Leak Q: Our basement was outfitted as a “dry basement” several years ago and then finished to become additional living space, which we use as a rec room and for storage. I’ve noticed a musty smell for some time, and after heavy rains last week I saw water pooling near a corner of the basement. However, I can’t find the source of the leak. What can I do? -Tara in St. Louis A: It sounds like there is a leak somewhere in the foundation. You’re right to be looking at that one corner as the most likely source of the water leak, but determining where the water is entering may be difficult.

Dry basements are made so through a number of techniques, including directing rainwater away from your home’s foundation. This is accomplished through surface drainage (such as your home’s gutter system) as well as subsurface drainage, which stops water which has percolated through the surface from entering the basement.

Subsurface drainage is typically put in place at the time of a home’s construction. This includes sloping the ground beneath the planned basement floor to direct water away from the house, adding a gravel layer and

a nonpermeable layer above that, and then pouring the basement’s concrete floor. Basement walls should be sealed on the outside at the time of construction.

Over time, concrete basement walls can develop tiny cracks that let more moisture through. This may be happening in your basement. There may be a larger crack near your home’s foundation that is letting more water in, or perhaps something has changed in the way runoff moves away from your home’s foundation.

Patch larger cracks in the driveway or in masonry or concrete surrounding your home.

Check the exterior of your house.

Is the gutter system in good repair?

Where do the drainspouts end? They should extend out from the foundation. If rainwater is pouring directly onto the foundation, it could be seeping more rapidly into the basement.

If none of these seem to be a problem or don’t clear up the leakage issue, contact a professional contractor who specializes in basement moisture problems to snoop out deeper issues.

HOME TIP: Use a humidifier in the basement during the summer months to combat excess humidity and minor condensation.

Back-to-School Lunchtime Tips School’s once again in session -- and so is your daily lunch-making routine. Here are some tips for making lunches that will keep your child healthy and happy all year long!

School Lunch Safety Tips: --Keep food preparation areas in the kitchen clean. Wash countertops, cutting boards, utensils and your hands in hot, soapy water. And don’t let the family pet jump up on kitchen counters.

--After preparing lunches, remember to immediately return unused portions of perishable foods -- like cheeses, deli meats and mayonnaise -- to the refrigerator. Don’t let them sit out on the counter.

--Make sure that cold foods are cold before packing them in a lunch box.

If possible, prepare the lunch the night before and store it in the refrigerator. (This also takes the edge off the mad morning rush!)

--Insulated lunch bags or boxes are the best way to keep food at a safe temperature until noon. Nestle a frozen juice pouch or ice pack inside, and sandwiches will stay extra cool.

--At school, instruct the kids to store their lunch box out of direct sunlight and away from radiators or other heaters, if possible.

--Sandwiches made with refrigerated items such as luncheon meats, cheese and tuna salad should be carried in

an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack. That way they should be safe to eat even after going hours without refrigeration.

--Keep hot foods -- like soups, stews or chilies -- hot. In the morning, bring the food to a boil and then immediately pour into a hot, sterile vacuum bottle. (Sterilize the vacuum bottle with boiling water.)

Adults will love it, too!

CINNAMON HONEY APPLE DIP 4 to 6 small apples, cored and cut into 4 wedges 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 cup (8 ounces) low-fat cream cheese

4 teaspoons honey 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1. Toss apples with lemon juice to prevent them from turning brown.

Beat cream cheese in a small bowl with an electric mixer or in a food processor on medium speed until creamy. Add the honey, vanilla and cinnamon. Beat until well-blended.

2. Place 2 to 3 tablespoons per person in a re-sealable container along with 4 of the apple wedges for dipping.

Makes 4 to 6 servings.

Kids and Dogs DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A while ago, you printed information on how to safely approach strange dogs. I’d like my two children to be familiar with those procedures. Can you provide that information? -- Candice C., Las Vegas DEAR CANDICE: I sure can. Here are a few tips courtesy of the American Kennel Club on how to safely approach a strange dog: --Ask permission: It’s very important

to ask a dog’s owner first if you can pet the dog. Not every dog reacts the same way to strangers petting them, and the owner will know if the dog is friendly and if it is safe for you to approach.

--Approach calmly: If the owner says yes, make a fist, extend your hand slowly to the dog, and let it sniff the back of your hand. Dogs recognize people by scent, so letting it sniff your hand lets the dog become familiar with you.

--Where to pet: Once the dog has sniffed your hand, pet it gently under the chin or on the chest.

--Don’t hug dogs: Kids should never hug a dog. Dogs don’t hug each other, and they don’t understand hugs to mean love and affection like humans do. Wrapping your arms around a dog can stress it out and lead to an unnecessary bite.

--Keep your chin up: Never put your face down in front of a dog. This can be threatening to the dog and cause it to react.

Ridge and Taylor reflected on how their own choices have affected their children. Rick planned on convincing the rest of his family that Hope was better off with Thomas.

Todd confessed to Carly that Jerry tricked him. Jax wished that he could appeal to the human side of his brother. Tracy lay in bed with Joe Jr., having no idea of his connection to Jerry. • On Sept. 9, 1776, the Continental Congress formally declares the name of the new nation to be the “United States” of America. It replaced the term “United Colonies,” which had been in general use.
