My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin It’s hard to believe the one-year anniversary of Shootin’ the Breeze has already rolled around – what a year it’s been!

I don’t think I’ve worked so hard, shaken as many hands, lost so many hours of sleep, met so many amazing people or had so many adventures in a single year before in my life.

Shortly after the first issue was published last September, an older fellow asked me if I was crazy. He told me I was out to lunch if I thought I could focus only on positive things, and that I’d be out of material before a month had passed.

I didn’t believe him then, and I don’t believe him now. On the contrary, every week it’s a struggle to fit everything I’d like to into our pages.

As time passes, more people are taking a few minutes to send an email or to call us with a story idea. I think people appreciate the concept that this publication is about promoting goodwill within our communities and celebrating the good stuff that happens around us.

I’ve written 52 editorials now, and it’s always been easy to come up with a topic because there’s always so much going on.

Many people have said they feel like they know me, even though we haven’t yet met in person, because I’ve been willing to share myself in this corner. I’m not writing about anything extraordinary, just things that happen on a day-to-day basis I feel others can connect with.

It’s great fun when people feel comfortable sharing their own stories that relate to something I’ve written. I visited with a couple at the trade show last weekend and was delighted to learn I’m not the only one who’s managed to get lost in Lundbreck!

My goal has been to create something unique, and to provide a medium for people to share things they’re proud of. Whether it’s a listing of a community event or a graduation announcement for a grandchild, this is a place where we can all celebrate.

It makes my day when someone tells me that reading our little community paper has made theirs,

and I’m grateful for the positive feedback and suggestions we receive.

This week’s edition isn’t a typical one because there isn’t a feature story. It’s not what I envisioned for the anniversary week, but I guess this is called going with the flow. There were many submitted tidbits that needed to be included in this particular issue along with other short blurbs and stories.

Every week I try to find as much balance as possible for stories from the areas we cover, but sometimes things seem skewed more to one community or another. In the end, I think it all comes out pretty evenly.

I’m grateful to my husband, Dennis, and daughter, Jaiden, who have helped when they could, but mostly had to accept that what I had taken on was all-consuming much of this first year. I’m sorry for the things I’ve missed out on, and thrilled that my workload finally seems to be more manageable. It’s also great fun when my family joins me on my adventures, and we’ve done many things this year that we might not have otherwise.

Shootin’ the Breeze and Mountainside Printing couldn’t have happened without the help of my big brother, Cary Robison. He has taken on a huge piece of the action and responsibility. He has gone so far above and beyond what any employee should or would do, that it’s difficult to express how appreciative I am.

Brenda Shenton also plays an important role at the Breeze. She has taken on management of the calendar of events, which is a huge job, keeps me organized, takes photographs, writes stories, and basically wears whatever hat I need her to. Not many have that kind of flexibility, and it’s great to have Brenda on our team.

I must express a sincere thank you to each advertiser who entrusts us to share their message, and to every person reading the Breeze – whether it’s for the 52nd time, or for the first time today.

Please keep the ideas and stories coming our way.

I’ve trusted all along that our readers will share what they’d like to see in our pages, and appreciate the support. Thanks for a great year!

The Breeze Mailbox Fall fair this weekend Happy September! In case you thought the excitement was over and it was time to get ready to curl up for winter, think again, my dears! Fall fair’s happening at Heritage Acres.

Our first-ever fall fair will take place on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. There will be a threshing bee, lots of demonstrations, kids’ activities, dogs, horses, a turkey shoot – lots, lots, lots to make a nice, old-fashioned day.

The pioneer family exhibit put together for the annual show will still be up and, of course, all the museum exhibits will be open. This isn’t just a ladies’ event – there is lots for everyone in the family; that’s how it was organized. An old-time family day. Lunch choices will be available, too, so you can really plan to spend the whole day.

The gate will be open early for people bringing items for the bench show; we are receiving items until 9 a.m.

The only fee is museum entrance – $5 for individuals, $15 for families. (Lunch and beverages, plus entry to the turkey shoot, have small charges.)

We sure hope to have a good turnout. Mark your calendar and join us!

Check out the new fall courses Hope you all enjoyed the summer and are getting back into the swing of things. Our summer closure is now over, and we are excited to have the doors open again at the Adult Learning and Literacy office at Pincher Creek Campus in the Co-op Mall.

The new fall course calendars are out and available in your mailbox or at Lebel Mansion, the pool, the library, town hall, Alberta Works, and P.C. Campus. This year our calendar is better than ever, with listings of courses and programs offered by over a dozen organizations in Pincher Creek.

Outstanding community achievements and volunteerism were recognized during a quiet ceremony last Thursday at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village in Pincher Creek, and two other individual presentations.

At Thursday’s event, Ted Menzies, MP for Macleod, presented Diamond Jubilee Medals to nine worthy recipients: Cliff Reiling and Joanne

Drain of Blairmore; Conrad Van Hierden, Frank McTighe, Gordon MacIvor and Ken Hurlburt of Fort Macleod; Gail Fjordbotten of Granum; Art Bonertz and Earl Johnson of Pincher Creek.

Kay Kerr of Blairmore was honoured with her medal during an earlier presentation by Mr. Menzies at York Creek Lodge.

Bob Westrop of Pincher Creek received his

medal Monday evening at the Pincher Creek town council meeting.

The medals, commemorating the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth’s accession to the throne, are being awarded over the course of the Diamond Jubilee year to 60,000 Canadians, in recognition of significant achievements and service.

The Breeze Mailbox Castle Mountain welcomes new general manager After five years of strong leadership, Brian Rhodes will be leaving Castle Mountain to pursue other interests.

The board of directors of Castle Mountain Resort Inc. is pleased to announce the hiring of Brad Brush, who will take over general management of the resort, effective mid-September.

Brad brings knowledge gained over 30 years working in the ski industry, with many different aspects of operations. For the last 16 years, he has been director of mountain operations with Panorama Mountain Village, a position that allowed him to be directly involved in the development and implementation of the ski area master plan, including mountain and village infrastructure.

We welcome Brad and his family to Castle Mountain Resort and the community, and look forward to working with him in the upcoming seasons.

If so, this event is for you!

This Thursday, Sept. 13, the Southwest Alberta Sustainable Community Initiative

will host a free workshop aimed at helping community service organizations design and deliver a compelling volunteer program.

The workshop will explore the motivations and expectations behind volunteering, potential barriers to volunteering, and possible solutions. It will also examine the essential qualities of the volunteer experience that ensure both the volunteer and the service organization achieve meaningful outcomes.

Finally, participants will work through a design process in which this learning is applied to real-world situations in their home organizations.

To deliver this program, SASCI has partnered with highly-regarded Canadian consultants – Chris Jarvis and Angela Parker of Realized Worth – who specialize in providing training and hands-on involvement in the design and implementation of outstanding and sustainable volunteer programs in both the private and public sectors.

Space is limited for this workshop; contact us early to reserve a spot! The event will be held in Crowsnest Pass, but organizations from other parts of southwest Alberta are welcome to participate.

The workshop will run from 9 a.m to 3 p.m.; lunch and refreshments will be provided. Additional details, including venue, will be provided to registrants.

Fall Mass Registration Night for sports and community activities will be held at the MDM Community Centre Gymnasium on Wednesday September 12, 2012 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Art by our local “Spider-Man,” John Hancock, will be featured later this month at Lebel Mansion Gallery in Pincher Creek.

Some 30 pieces of art will be displayed, each depicting the life of a spider and its web. The works illustrate the beauty and engineering skills of orbweb spiders, in both realistic and abstract form.

Media used in creating the collection include acrylic, sgraffite, coloured pencil, and ink.

Each piece comes complete with information about the spider and its niche, on the back, plus a booklet with the same details.

Many different spiders and niches are explored, such as the fishing spider that can walk on water (as portrayed in “Beauvais Lakes Provincial Park Cat-Walk”); spiders that build diving bells to live under water; the dreamcatcher spider; and wellknown characters from children’s novels and nursery rhymes.

One can view spiderwebs in the dew and during a frost; a spider that eats only male moths; a courting jumping spider with a secret message – and much more!

The exhibit opens Sept. 18, and runs until Nov. 2.

An opening reception will be held Sept. 21, from 7 to 9 p.m., at Lebel Mansion Gallery.

Grassland percussion The trail I was on a few days ago followed the contours of the base of a mountain, through aspen stands, over rocky knolls sparsely covered with native grasses, then onto an open slope dominated by more lush native grassland.

Here I paused to look around. The autumn colours were starting to ripen the landscape, and the nutcrackers were squawking.

Have you ever sat still in native grassland on a calm day and listened? I love the late summer when you can feel the sun’s heat roasting the green out of the grass blades, turning them to autumn gold. Away from the sound of traffic on the highway, the world seems much slower – or maybe I’m just more inclined to slow down and take time to look and listen.

The first sound I hear in this grassland is the persistent buzzing of flies around me.

Either I smell nice, or I smell awful, I’m not sure which. At any rate, they are attracted to me initially, but none seem to land. I’m not what they are looking for.

I let the buzzing sound fade in my consciousness, and the sound of grasshoppers conversing among fescue tillers rises to the surface. The buzzing of the flies and the rattling sound of grasshoppers seem to be part

of the prairie percussionist group.

One of the black cows down in the valley adds her voice, lowing to her calf. A dragonfly whirrs past. A grasshopper jumps and lands eight feet away; the balsamroot leaf he uses as a landing pad creaks as it accepts his weight.

I wonder how the insects make these noises. The fly and the dragonfly sounds seem to come from their wing movement disturbing the air. It turns out that grasshoppers make their sounds one of two ways, depending on the species. One way is called stridulation, which involves a vibration made from rubbing a thickened forewing against a row of pegs on the inside of the hind leg, which in turn creates sound. Crepitation is the other way grasshoppers make sounds; this refers to the snapping of hindwings as they fly, which makes a crackling sound.

A breeze blows me out of my reverie, the cool air rushing by my face; a fanning sound in my ears. The grasses and forbs around me shuffle and brush each other. Locoweed seeds rattle on the stem.

Another breeze dances through the limber pine and fir scattered on the slope.

In a forest stand a few metres away, chickadees are calling from three locations, their voices triangulating around me, one more insistent than the rest.

I sit quietly and a grouse makes a tentative chucking sound behind me. I wonder if it is a blue grouse. Maybe if I sit still long enough and quietly enough, the grouse will show itself.

I wonder if the music we know today has its ancient roots in the sounds of nature, like those I’ve experienced in these moments on this grassland hillside. Perhaps ancient peoples created the first instruments to mimic animal or bird sounds, or to attract creatures during a hunt. Our popular music today has changed a lot from these sounds of nature.

Walking on this trail, I wonder what kind of music my presence makes.

The Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce Awards of Excellence event will be held Oct. 17 at the Heritage Inn. This year we made some changes to the categories, and also made it possible to nominate an individual, a committee or an organization in some of the categories.

The two new award categories are junior entrepreneur and employee of the year. So, if you have some great staff members working for you, now you have the opportunity to nominate and reward them in a special way for what they contribute to your business or organization.

Ria Frith, self-proclaimed “head barista wrangler,” was all smiles behind the counter at Harvest Coffeehouse when the new Pincher Creek business opened Monday.

Harvest Coffeehouse on Main Street opened its doors Monday, offering the first full-service espresso bar in Pincher Creek.

“We’ve had intensive training with Crowsnest Coffee Company, and we serve coffee as it is meant to be served,” says manager Aynsley Baker.

Their unique menu is “real food, done well,” she says.

The kid-friendly coffeehouse offers a “Little Dude’s Menu” as well as soup and sandwiches, made to order.

“It’s a simple lunch menu – with a twist,” says Aynsley.

“We hope Harvest will become a gathering place for everyone.”

Harvest Coffeehouse is open seven days a week, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and to 5 p.m. on Fridays.

Beautiful Bertha If you haven’t made the trek to Bertha Lake at Waterton Park, there’s still time to lace up your hiking boots and check it out. It takes about 4.5 hours for the round trip, as you climb 1,500 feet up to this lovely spot. You can add another mile or so by walking around the lake. The Bertha Falls are lovely, and you’ll see changes in topography and fantastic views of the Waterton townsite as you ascend the switchbacks to Bertha Lake. There are lots of berries, so remember to take along both your bear spray and your bear smarts.

What do you see?

Rose Hogan took several photos and videotaped the evening sky Aug. 20, and is curious to know if anyone saw the same thing she did. The pictures were taken between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m., looking west from Foothills Trailer Park in Pincher Creek. Although the shape immediately brings a funnel cloud to mind, there aren’t reports of active weather in the area that night. The shape in the sky is quite symmetrical, and it’s been suggested it might be a shadow. Iris Wang began the adventure of her lifetime last week when she left her home in Hualien, on the east coast of Taiwan, to spend a year in Pincher Creek.

Iris will live first with the Holoboff family and will attend Grade 12 classes at St. Michael’s School. During her year in Canada, she will also live with the families of Dan and Shannon Crawford, and Dennis and Shannon Robin.

Italy, the favorite, was playing Brazil in an early round of the World Bridge Olympiad. Forty-five nations were entered in the event.

Pedro Assumpcao was North for Brazil and Gabriel Chagas South when this deal occurred. The opening notrump bid showed 13 to 15 points, and two clubs was Stayman, indicating interest in a major. Two diamonds denied a four-card major, and three clubs by North was also an artificial bid, asking South to pinpoint his distribution.

Three hearts announced precisely 2-34-4 distribution, and North -- knowing that his partner also had only a doubleton spade -- decided to take his chances in a 4-3 heart fit rather than in notrump.

So, while the overwhelming majority of the 44 other North-South pairs floundered in three notrump, and went down one after the automatic spade lead, Assumpcao and Chagas found the best game contract of four hearts and eas-

ily made it after West led the ace and another spade.

It was clearly one of the best-bid hands of the tournament, but, unfortunately, there was an ironic twist. It turned out that their Brazilian teammates at the other table had been incorrectly seated North-South in the 30-board match, instead of East-West, and the entire match had to be canceled -- even though the Brazilians had soundly trounced their world-famous Italian opponents at both tables.

Instead of replaying the match, which would be normal in such circumstances, the authorities decided to award each team an above-average score. Although this was somewhat unfair -- especially to the Brazilians, who had played so well -justice was served in the end when Brazil wound up winning the Olympiad and its first world championship. I hope so, because I’ve read them all and believe they could be made into a great series of sci-fi movies. -- Paul R., Marion, Indiana A: The March release of Disney’s “John Carter” is indeed based on Burroughs’ Barsoom book series, which were published in various magazines as a serial from 1912 to 1943. Because of their popularity, they were then published as their own book series from 1917 to 1964.

The film, however, didn’t prove to be quite so popular. It was received with mixed reviews and a dismal boxoffice take. “Soldiers of Fortune” (R) -- Christian Slater is a tough ex-military kinda guy hired to protect some millionaires who want front-row tickets to a real war zone. Naturally and deservedly, the mission goes horribly awry and everybody’s lives are put in danger (more than anticipated, I guess). This is one of those movies you see for rent that you’ve never heard of, but when you check the box it’s got a decent cast (Sean Bean, Ving Rhames, James Cromwell). Spanish Tortilla Is Healthy Snack When I return from a trip, some of my best souvenirs are recipes collected along the way. While photographs provide a visual journal of our adventures, preparing a new dish is like a journal of the senses. The aroma in our kitchen and robust tastes at first bite bring back the memory of people and places.

Now back home from a trip to the Colorado mountains, I’m eager to prepare the Spanish tortilla recipe my friend Joana Iniguez, originally from Barcelona, taught me in her bright kitchen nestled in Aspen.

“It’s Spanish tradition to make a ‘tortilla’ as a snack (tapa) or for picnics and serve slices warm or cool,” she said as she expertly sliced a zucchini into almost paper-thin disks. “It’s commonly prepared with potatoes, eggs, onions, olive oil and salt, but I prefer replacing the potatoes with zucchini for a sweeter taste.

“Best of all, it’s a special hit with my 9and 10 year-old nieces, who are generally picky eaters,” she added.

While zucchini are still plentiful, prepare this tortilla with your kids and enjoy it as a healthy snack or evening meal on a busy school night. Serve with crusty bread, and do like the kids in Barcelona: Cut a juicy, ripe tomato in half, squeeze out some of the center portion onto a slice of French bread and drizzle with a

bit of olive oil. Pure deliciousness!

SPANISH TORTILLA WITH ZUCCHINI Ingredients: 4 tablespoons olive oil 2 medium onions, thinly sliced 6 medium zucchini (about 2 1/2 pounds total), cut in very thinly sliced rounds using a knife or mandoline 6 eggs 1 teaspoon salt Pepper to taste 1. Put 3 tablespoons of oil in a large skillet and saute the onions on low heat for 5 minutes or until they are soft but still glistening. Stir frequently. Add zucchini and 1/2 teaspoon salt, and saute 15 minutes or until zucchini are tender and ruffled around the edges. Spoon the mixture into a colander to drain juices.

2. Let kids crack and whisk the eggs in a large bowl. Stir in drained zucchini mixture and remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt.

3. Heat a 10-inch nonstick skillet driz-

zled with oil. Add the egg mixture and cook on low heat, stirring occasionally until eggs have set and bottom is golden, about 10-12 minutes.

4. Run a spatula around the edges. Place a flat, rimless frying-pan lid that is larger than the tortilla over the skillet.

Hold the lid handle with one hand and the skillet with the other, let the kids count to three, and then quickly flip the tortilla onto the lid. Slide the flipped tortilla back into the skillet and cook for 3-5 minutes, until firm. Leg Pain a Sign of Blocked Artery DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My wife’s doctor thinks she has intermittent claudication due to peripheral vascular disease. She also has diabetes.

Would you describe it and its treatment? -- S.B. ANSWER: Peripheral vascular disease also goes by the name peripheral artery disease, PAD. “Peripheral” refers to the outer boundary, and when speaking of the body, the legs are its periphery. Leg arteries are narrowed and often blocked by the buildup of cholesterol, fat and many other components found in the circulation. The buildup is called plaque. The buildup can be so great that no blood runs through the main leg arteries.

Intermittent claudication is leg pain that develops when someone with PAD walks any distance. The person can tell, almost to the number of steps taken, when pain will arise.

Taking a rest relieves the pain.

About 15 percent of those 70 and older have PAD. Its main sign is intermittent claudication.

Your wife can do many things on her own that will help her. If her cholesterol is high, she has to get it down.

She has to maintain normal blood pressure. She must exercise within the limits prescribed by her doctor.

Walking is one of the best exercises.

If she starts out modestly and gradually increases the distance and pace, she should aim for 30 minutes of walking daily. When pain arises, she should stop, take a break and then resume once pain has gone.

One simple test for determining PAD is comparing blood pressure taken at the ankle with blood pressure taken in the arm. They should be nearly equal. If the ankle pressure is lower, that’s evidence of PAD. Your wife’s doctor will discuss the use of medicines like Plavix, Pletal and aspirin. With severe blockage of an artery, opening it up with a balloontipped catheter and inserting a shunt is one treatment. It’s the same procedure used for clogged heart arteries. Removing the obstructed artery segment and replacing it with a graft is another way to treat this illness.

Italian Spiced Shrimp Quick and flavorful, this healthful shrimp dish gets most of its flavor from a variety of Italian herbs and spices.

1 small onion 1 tablespoon fresh oregano leaves 1 cup long-grain white rice 1 3/4 cups hot water 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper, to taste 2 cloves garlic, crushed with press 1 cup dry white wine 1 can no-salt-added diced tomatoes, drained well 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 pound 16- to 20-count shrimp, shelled and deveined, tail part left on if you like 8 leaves basil, sliced very thin, for garnish 1. Preheat oven to 400 F. While oven heats, finely chop onion and oregano.

2. In 3-quart shallow baking dish, combine rice and water. Cover tightly with foil and bake 20 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, in 5- to 6-quart saucepot, heat oil on medium. Add onion, oregano and red pepper; cook 3 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds or until golden, stirring. Add wine and heat to boiling; reduce heat to medium-low and simmer 6 minutes or until wine is reduced by half, stirring occasionally. Stir in tomatoes, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper.

Remove from heat.

4. Arrange shrimp on top of rice in baking dish, in single layer. Pour tomato mixture evenly over shrimp; cover tightly with foil and bake 15 minutes or until shrimp turn opaque. Garnish with basil. Serves 6.

Fried Calamari Fra Diavolo Crispy golden-fried squid is served with a tomato dipping sauce that is often as spicy as the devil (“fra diavolo” means “brother devil”). Or simply serve with lemon wedges, if you prefer.

1 tablespoon olive oil 2 cloves garlic, crushed with side of chef ’s knife 1/8 teaspoon (up to 1/8) crushed red pepper 1 can (14 to 16 ounces) tomatoes 3/4 teaspoon salt 1 pound cleaned squid 2/3 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup water Vegetable oil for frying 1. In nonreactive 1-quart saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add garlic and

crushed red pepper; cook until garlic is golden, about 30 seconds. Add tomatoes with their juice and 1/2 teaspoon salt, breaking up tomatoes with side of spoon; heat to boiling. Reduce heat; cover and simmer 10 minutes. Keep warm.

2. Rinse squid with cold running water and gently pat dry with paper towels. Slice squid bodies crosswise into 3/4-inch rings.

Cut tentacles into pieces if large.

3. To make batter, in small bowl, with fork, mix flour and water until smooth. In 10inch skillet, heat 1/2 inch vegetable oil over medium heat until very hot. (A small piece of bread dropped into oil should sink, then rise to top and begin bubbling.) In small batches, drop squid into batter. Allowing excess batter to drip off, add squid to hot oil. Fry, turning to brown on all sides, until golden, about 2 minutes.

4. With slotted spoon, transfer squid to paper towels to drain; sprinkle with remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt. Serve with tomato sauce for dipping. Makes 4 first-course servings. Mineral Buildup Around Faucets Q: I have a recurring problem with mineral deposits building up around my faucets. How can I reduce these, and is there an easier way to clean it off the faucets and fixtures? -- Carl in Ocala, Fla. A: Mineral buildup around faucets, also known as “scale,” is common in areas such as yours that have hard water -- water containing high levels of minerals, particularly those containing calcium or magnesium. Hard water makes it difficult for soaps to lather up, which is inconvenient for bathers. But more serious is the potential for scale buildup inside water heaters.

The most effective way to reduce the prevalence of scale is to install a water softener where the water enters the house. The size and type of water softener unit depends on how much water you use per day on average and the hardness of the water. You can bring in a professional to test the water, assess your needs and estimate the cost of the installation, or, if you’re experienced with plumbing, you can install the softener yourself.

ing. Make sure the installer locates the water softener unit at least 10 feet from the water heater, and that a remote bypass also is installed (this allows you to bypass the water-softener unit if it shuts down for any reason so that the house still gets water).

Water softeners last for many years and operate with few problems, making them a good value for the amount of money you’ll spend on parts and installation.

In the meantime, clean scale buildup from faucets and showerheads by shutting off the water supply to the affected faucets, and unscrewing the shower head and faucet aerators.

Wash them in soapy water and rinse well. Then, place in a stainless steel or Teflon lined pan with a solution of half vinegar and half water. Simmer the hardware for five minutes, cool, then scrub with a nylon brush to remove the deposits.

HOME TIP: To reduce mineral buildup and lengthen the life of your water heater, drain it twice a year via the drain spigot.

LEMON GINGER CHICKEN WITH CARROT CASHEW SLAW Lemon-Soy Sauce Marinade: 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 1/4 cup canola or olive oil plus 1 tablespoon, reserved

1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce 2 tablespoons peeled, grated ginger 2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar 1 teaspoon hot chili-garlic sauce, such as Sriracha 4 boneless chicken breast halves, (about 1 to 1 1/2 pounds)

To cook the chicken: Using a large pan over high heat, add remaining 1 tablespoon oil. Cook chicken, about 5 to 6 minutes per side. Cook until both sides are nicely browned and chicken is cooked through. Stack salad on top of the chicken. Serves 4.

Wild Animals Pose Threat to Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A number of cats in our area disappeared this spring and summer, and I noticed the rabbits that used to plague our garden don’t come as frequently. A neighbor told me he saw a coyote crossing the street just before dawn recently, and I suspect it is the cause of many of these disappearances.

Please warn your readers they need to protect their pets as wild animals are encroaching on well-populated neighborhoods. -- Pat C., Weston,

As wild creatures lose more and more of their natural habitats, they are being seen much more frequently in the suburbs and even in urban areas.

This goes beyond nuisance animals like raccoons and skunks: Black bears frequently wander into back yards in central Florida, and residents in urban Allston, Mass., are sometimes confronted by wild turkeys foraging along city streets. And coyotes and cougars have been reported in suburban neighborhoods in many parts of the United States.

Wild animals present a lot of risk to pets (as well as humans). Besides the threat of contracting rabies or other diseases, some predators find smaller pets to be easy, tasty prey.

Keep cats and small dogs indoors at night. If wild animals have been reported in your area, don’t let your pet out unaccompanied or off a leash, even during the day when no danger

is apparent. Keep your pet’s vaccinations up to date.

If you have pets, like rabbits, that are kept outside, reinforce and strengthen protective fencing around their cages.
