My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin I don’t like making mistakes.

I’m human, though, so mistakes are made on a fairly regular basis. With age I’ve found it easier to deal with errors. An exception would be when I’m sparring with my husband – in which case I’m never wrong. He’s never wrong, either, so sometimes we just have to agree to disagree!

As far as I’m concerned, the best way to deal with a mistake is to acknowledge it, apologize and do whatever you can to make things right.

It’s kind of fun when someone catches a spelling or grammatical error in the Breeze. Some of our faithful readers make a point of looking for errors each week, and we don’t mind at all.

Debates about the use of “I” and “me” can actually be thought-provoking and fun. I’m proud of the fact that we don’t hear of mistakes often.

Last week, though, an error more substantial than an incorrectly-placed apostrophe sneaked through our editing process.

If you’re a coffee fan, you likely already know the comment I’m referring to.

A little blurb announcing the opening of Harvest Coffeehouse incorrectly called it the first full-service coffee bar in Pincher Creek.

If I was a connoisseur of specialty drinks I would have known that both Celestial Sweets and Denise’s Bistro have been serving espressos and lattes for years.

Unfortunately, I’m not a coffee drinker. In all honesty, I’ve never paid attention to who offers what for hot drinks because I don’t order them.

The reason the error got through was simple coffee ignorance on my part. At the trade show a few weekends ago, I joked with David Crowell about my dislike of coffee. He’s the general manager of the Pincher Creek Co-op and he served hundreds of cups of coffee to people who

visited his booth. I was definitely the oddball in the crowd for not being interested in a free cup of java.

I instantly associate the name Celestial Sweets with the warm, sweet, baked goodies that appear often in our coffee room. Those are usually the only days I take a break!

At the mention of Denise’s Bistro, I think first of our staff Christmas party when she closed her doors to the public and devoted the evening to spoiling us with a fantastic dinner.

Coffee? Oops!

Through the error I learned not only about the specialty coffees available, but also more about all three of these businesses. They all have coffee in common, but each offers unique products and experiences.

I appreciate the error being brought to our attention, and the opportunity to make it right with Celeste Fouillard, Denise Simon and our readers. Take a peek at page 10 and you might find there’s more to these businesses than you knew, as well!

On another topic, have you made plans for date night for the next two weekends?

There are opportunities for some excellent dining, dancing and celebrating in Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek.

Summer is over, the kids are back in school, so why not take an adult timeout to party with Pincher Creek Elks at their 50th birthday bash, celebrate 85 years with the Pincher Creek Legion, dance the night away at the Harvest of Memories banquet in Blairmore, or hang out with 1920s gangsters and flappers for a Wild Night at the Waldorf in Pincher Creek?

A call for art Area artists are invited to submit two pieces of work, in any medium, to Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery’s annual winter show, No Particular Topic.

Dates are Jan. 26 to Feb. 24, 2013. This is a non-juried show where everyone has a chance to show off their talent, and the great variety of works make it fun for Krisztina to hang.

At the same time, we are looking for artwork for the annual Yule Season show at Stone’s Throw Cafe. The rules at the cafe are that all works have to be for sale, and dimensions should be nothing too large.

This venue has been very popular with our local artists, and we get a lot of positive feedback from people around town who might not come to the art gallery much, but enjoy the mini shows at the cafe and always look forward to what goes on those walls next.

Submission deadline for both shows is Friday, Nov. 2.

New wheels for Kylie

Mobility is an easy thing to take for granted.

We jump into our vehicles and zip to the grocery store, make extra trips when little things are forgotten, and basically go where we want, when we want.

That hasn’t been the reality in Claire and Holly McMaster’s household – at least not until now. Thanks to a generous donation from Angels Within Us, the Pincher Creek family is no longer restricted to going out only when necessary.

“We weren’t expecting such a generous gift,” Holly says.

Claire agrees, adding, “We’ve been overwhelmed by the community support for Kylie and for us.”

These words of gratitude come easily now

that Claire and Holly have had a month for it to sink in that the modified 2010 Dodge Caravan in the driveway really belongs to them.

With the blunt honesty of a seven-year-old, Connor likes to tell the story a little bit differently. In his version, his mom was mad that the Angels called.

There’s a bit more to it than that.

Holly was trying to get Kylie to bed after a long day and was annoyed that the phone kept ringing.

“I thought, now who is it?” she says. “It turned out to be the most wonderful call, and I was jumping up and down and crying when I found out what Angels Within Us were doing for our family.”

with Lennox Gastaut Syndrome – one of the most severe forms of epilepsy. Since then, Claire and Holly have digested a tremendous amount of information and have begun to make sense of things they didn’t understand before.

“Most people think of convulsing, like in grand mal, when they hear the word seizure,” Claire says. “We’ve learned so much about the different kinds of seizures, and it’s unbelievable that when Kylie has cluster seizures she can have 800 or more in a day.”

Holly and Claire still panic with certain types of seizures, and Kylie is most often surrounded by pillows. “It’s sad to say, but we’re used to it now,” Claire says.

KYLIE, continued from page 3 she pushes herself up from a lying position to sitting, but she can’t support herself on her legs.

The Lennox Gastuat diagnosis explains the seizure part of things, but not why she doesn’t walk or talk. “We think there’s more to it than LG,” Claire says.

Kylie has very expressive eyes, a beautiful smile and a laugh that tells you she’s a happy little girl. Her mom says Kylie loves music, plays interactive games on the iPad, enjoys rhythmic patterns and loves to be with other kids. “She’s very happy for what she has to put up with,” says her dad.

Overstimulation, whether positive or negative, often leads to seizures. Kylie’s breathing and demeanour change quickly, and her caregivers at home and at school know to watch carefully.

Kylie is well known at St. Michael’s school, where she attended preschool for two years and is now a kindergarten student. Connor says the kids all want to be the one chosen to do an activity with his sister.

“She loves being there, and the kids love her,” Holly says.

“Some are apprehensive at first, but by Christmas all is good,” Claire adds.

“She’s taught us and her classmates patience, sympathy and empathy, and has really taught her brother tolerance and made him a more wellrounded person.”

Both Holly and Claire went to St. Michael’s School, and hoped both their kids would be able to as well. Things weren’t looking good at first because there was limited wheelchair access. The prospect of Kylie attending the school motivated the community and the school to step forward and make the building and the playground wheelchair-accessible.

“This wasn’t done just for us,” Holly acknowledges. “Our situation pushed them to do it, but there will be long-term community benefits that will help other kids as well.”

At school, Kylie loves to play at the water table and the sand table. Her walker stays at school, where there is ample hallway space for her to practise moving one foot in front of the other and transferring some weight to her legs.

This is a way for her to build strength in a safe way.

At one time, Kylie’s her parents felt they needed to push her to walk. They now understand the chances of a severe injury would be much higher if she was walking and had a fall-down seizure. “While it would be nice to see her walking and talking, and hopefully she will some day, we need to get the seizures under control,” Claire says. “We want her to be happy and comfortable.”

The seizures are hard to control, and it seems Kylie’s medication needs to be changed constantly. It has been suggested a ketogenic diet would be beneficial, but Claire and Holly aren’t sure about trying that route because there’s only a 30 per cent chance of the effect being significant.

It would mean switching to a diet high in fat, adequate in protein and low in carbohydrates.

With Kylie’s sensory aversion to many foods, they fear she would need to be fed by tube. Knowing that Kylie is prone to infections, this doesn’t seem like the best option at the moment, although they may consider it at another time.

Folk artist in the spotlight

By Vicki Arndt A celebrated folk musician who performed at the London 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics brings his latest and greatest to Fort Macleod’s Empress Theatre in October.

John Wort Hannam, who calls Fort Macleod home, is rapidly becoming a household name in folk music circles around Canada and abroad. He releases his fifth album, Brambles and Thorns, on Oct. 2, followed by his first CD release party on Oct. 5 and 6 at the Empress.

“I am excited that I’ll be bringing all the musicians that played on the CD, so what you hear on stage is what we heard in the studio,” John says.

He has celebrated award after award since entering the music industry, including contemporary album of the year at the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Awards.

John is known for his unique storytelling, polished voice and inspiring stage presence. He’s drawn great musical inspiration from his hometown, titling his fourth album Queen’s Hotel – after the Main Street landmark well-known to locals for its colourful past.

Crowsnest Historical Society hosts its annual Harvest of Memories banquet and dance Saturday, Sept. 29 to support the continued operation of Crowsnest Museum and Archives. The fundraiser, part of Crowsnest Pass Culture Days, runs from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Blairmore Elks Hall.

Through such support, Crowsnest Museum is able to present new exhibits celebrating Crowsnest Pass history; preserve the community’s collection of artifacts and photographs; offer educational programs; repair and maintain the historic Crowsnest Museum building, located in downtown Coleman National Historic Site; and provide interpretive and informational services to visitors and school groups.

Crowsnest Historical Society is a registered charitable organization which issues tax receipts for monetary donations over $10 and for material donations at fair market value.

Three decades of dedication

By Shannon Robin Bill Elton of Cowley was honoured Sunday for his dedication to the Terry Fox Foundation and the cause of cancer research.

Fay Jenkins presented not one, but three plaques to honour Bill for his three decades of commitment and volunteerism.

“In everything there’s what is known as the backbone or the worker,” Fay said when introducing Bill to the group gathered for the annual walk.

“Ella Froese said she would call the meetings, and Bill would attend to things to make it happen,” she added. “He has been on the committee since it was started, and did the background work.”

Bill has organized the Terry Fox Run in Pincher Creek since 1989, and it consistently raises $3,000 to $4,000 each year.

Bill became involved with the Terry Fox Foundation after his first wife, Lorraine, died of cancer. Like so many others whose lives have been touched by cancer, he made the decision to make a difference.

The award presentation was a secret closely guarded by fellow volunteers Fay, Margaret Keer and Connie Brown, and by Bill’s wife, Carol Getzlaff. As icing on the cake, Bill’s son Boyd and wife Ellen of Whitecourt were on hand to congratulate him in person.

Boyd participated in the walk with his dad for many years in the tradition of a family-oriented event. Heather Kidd’s whole family used to attend – this year she was kidless, but everyone was part of the family event.

Amelia Woodard was the only one to actually run the course, and she did it more than once. The rest of us enjoyed the creekside walk on a beautiful fall afternoon and the opportunity to get to know some new people.

Local participants raised over $4,500 – outstanding when you consider there were only 14 people and four dogs at the starting line!

Of every dollar raised by the Terry Fox Foundation, 84 cents goes to cancer research.

The event also serves as a remembrance tribute to Terry Fox, who dreamed of raising one dollar for every Canadian through his Marathon of Hope.

Area schools will participate in the national school run day on Thursday, Sept. 27.

Take care in the backcountry Teck is again asking backcountry users to be extra cautious around its exploration site near Hosmer, after someone recently tried to drive an ATV near an active drilling site.

The ATV operator “became upset and aggressive” when a Teck employee stopped him, pointed out rocks were falling on the road and suggested an alternative route, said Nic Milligan, Teck’s community and governmental affairs manager.

The worker “stopped the situation from escalating” and the rider “eventually took a safe route out,” Mr. Milligan said. “We want to make it clear that our priority is the safety of the public and of our workers.”

Teck, in the early stages of exploration for a potential new coal operation, is conducting drilling and environmental baseline assessments on its private property between Marten Ridge and Wheeler Ridge. Active work is scheduled in Snowslide Creek drainage, Carbon Creek drainage, Wheeler Creek drainage and Little Wheeler drainage. Exact worksites will change daily.

The company still allows some public access to this private land, but asks backcountry users to follow basic safety procedures: Let the field supervisor know you are in

the area by calling the cell number on signs at the boundary of the active work area, or by approaching a field team member. Find out where worksites are and where it is safe for you to travel.

Follow safety instructions given by Teck staff, which may include avoiding local areas where activities may put you or Teck workers at risk.

Failure to follow instructions may result in loss of access privileges for everyone.

Expect to see increased traffic. Slow down on blind corners and when passing workers.

Do not travel past heavy machinery at drill sites. Be aware there may be loose rocks or debris.

There will be up to 50 people working, including up to 20 people carrying out environmental baseline testing on foot and in dense vegetation. Drive slowly past workers. Hunters, be aware of workers’ relative location to you and point guns or bows away.

“We know that access is an important issue to local backcountry users, and we want to work with the responsible majority to ensure everyone can continue to enjoy these access privileges safely,” Mr. Milligan said. “We thank everyone who uses the area responsibly.”

By Shannon Robin Having the best equipment possible in our local hospitals can mean the difference between life and death. Through the Windy Slopes Health Foundation, Dan Crawford and his hockey team hope to raise $21,000 to purchase a new heart monitor/pacer for the Pincher Creek Community Health Centre.

The Pincher Creakers oldtimers hockey team has planned a 48-hour hockey game, set to run Oct. 12 to 14 in Pincher Creek.

Dan is actively seeking both players and sponsors for the event.

The game’s largest expense is ice rental, which costs $110 per hour, or over $5,000 for the game. Dan is looking for personal and business sponsorships of an hour or more of ice time. About 20 hours have been covered so far.

This is a great way for people to contribute to the fight against heart disease – we all know someone who’s been touched by it.

Official receipts from WSHF will be available to anyone contributing $25 or more, as the foundation is a registered charitable organization and an approved vendor for the hospital. “It’s important to keep the money separate from our team, and working with Windy Slopes makes that easy,” Dan says.

Words of encouragement to the players will be announced during the time sponsored, so you’ll also be contributing to the morale of the men and women spending their weekend at the arena.

Dan hopes to attract about 80 skaters, and has extended invitations to teams and players (20 years and older, male or female) from other towns to take on the challenge.

Each player is responsible for a $200 entry fee that can be raised by collecting sponsorship donations. This includes two breakfasts and one supper. Of course, rais-

ing more than $200 is even better!

“I’m hoping to get some guys off the couch to come play and have some fun,” Dan says.

Players will be split into two teams and organizers will make sure there’s equal ability on the lines. This means anyone of any skill level is welcome to play, and sets the stage for a great game.

“There’ll likely be a good guy, a bad guy and a bunch in between on each line,” Dan explains with a chuckle.

Based on 80 participants, each player will spend about nine hours on the ice over the course of the weekend. Breaks between shifts will be about four hours – just enough time for a quick bite to eat and a catnap. A rotation schedule has been devised, and organizers plan to stick to it once the puck drops.

“I’m most excited about getting different groups together to do this,” Dan says. Members of the hockey community, WSHF, Pincher Creek Curling Club, Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village, Rotary Club of Pincher Creek and individual community members will put in about 350 hours of volunteer time during the 48-hour stretch.

Along with the game, supporters can take in a silent auction, 50/50 draws, a puck drop and some good music.

“There should be 300 to 400 fans at the rink cheering the players on Sunday afternoon,” Dan says. “I’d love to see hootin’ and hollerin’ and the same level of excitement and support as there was for the midget league finals last year.”

“It’s a neat idea, and we’ll see where it goes,” Dan says. He’d love to see the game become an annual event, for different community funding. “We’ll see how we feel when it’s all over with.”

By Brenda Shenton It’s no secret that Pincher Creek has three coffee bars to offer customers. Last week, in our rush to welcome a new business to downtown Pincher Creek, we failed to acknowledge the other full-service coffee bars in town. Via the grapevine, loyal customers of both Denise’s Bistro and Celestial Sweets gently reminded us of the great coffee and service they have been enjoying for years.

In fact, Denise’s started as a coffee house nine years ago, then added a restaurant three years later. Owner Denise Simon says she’s been using the same coffee supplier – Fratello, an Italian roasting house from Calgary

– the entire time. She supports them because “they offer fair trade organic coffee, and they help coffee growers’ families in other countries with projects such as housing.”

Still proudly a full-service coffee bar with a wide selection of herbal teas, the bistro on Main Street is a licensed restaurant with a very diverse menu.

“Customers have said it’s a taste of international food,” says Denise. “Maybe it’s why we are known as a taste of heaven.”

Celeste Foulliard of Celestial Sweets, on Kettles Street in Pincher Creek, says her motto is “Sit, eat, drink, be happy.” Her shop offers what she describes as “good food, good desserts, good coffee and good visits.”

“In our little corner of the world we have fantastic organic coffees and specialty teas,” she says. “We proudly serve Cupper’s coffee and tea, from the Lethbridge company which describes themselves as Alberta’s own micro-roaster.”

The specialty bakery has been operating for five years and is known for its homemade pies, squares, cheesecakes and special-order birthday cakes. Rounding out the menu are homemade soups, salads and panini sandwiches made to order. The lunch crowd also likes the variety of cold sandwiches offered.

“Everything is made from scratch,” says Celeste. “It’s like home – we bake what we feel like baking.”

All spruced up

By Shannon Robin The fellows gathered at the Pincher Creek golf course Tuesday morning were quick to acknowledge Bob Toney’s awesome effort to spruce up the local links through a tree-planting project.

This same group of guys was out with Bob last week, packing and tamping 124 Colorado blue spruce trees into place. They also mentioned what a great job Diane Tollestrup had done with careful and skilful work with the tree spade.

Bob initiated the beautification project for the course this summer, making a deal with Tollestrup Tree Farms of Raymond to purchase the 10-foot conifers at $200 each. His next job was to raise money for the cause, so he visited local businesses and everyone he knew to ask for contributions.

While he was still in selling mode, Bob commented, “It’s easy to sell something that’s for the good of the community.” Raising about $5,000 wasn’t too big a task for this community-minded fellow!

“It’s a dream come true,” Bob says. “The trees are beautiful, and the difference is right there, right now!”

When three truckloads of trees arrived in town last week, Bob was joined by a group of volunteers who put in a huge amount of time and effort to assist with planting trees at almost every hole.

“I couldn’t have done it without the great group of guys, all of them seniors, who helped get the trees in the ground,” Bob says.

Placement of the trees was determined by local course superintendent Alan Dobbs and Brian Huculak, general manager of the Lethbridge Golf and Country Club. They were both out getting their hands dirty along with the rest of the volunteers.

“Hello Goodbye Hello: A Circle of 101 Remarkable Meetings”

by Craig Brown (Simon & Schuster, $26.95) Reviewed by Larry Cox Craig Brown has written one of the most entertaining and intriguing books to pop up in recent months.

The witty British writer and a frequent contributor to such publications as the Daily Telegraph, Vanity Fair and The Times, has documented 101 meetings in exactly 1,001 words each. One meeting seamlessly blends into the next.

For example, Marilyn Monroe meets with Frank Lloyd Wright at the Plaza Hotel during the autumn of 1957 hoping he will design her dream house. That encounter is followed two years later when the screen star dazzles Nikita Khrushchev in her tightest, sexiest dress at the Cafe de Paris in Hollywood. Khrushchev lambasts George Brown in London in 1956. You get the idea.

These strange-but-true meetings

involve many heavy hitters of the past century from almost every aspect of modern culture. The book begins with Adolf Hitler. During the summer of 1931, Hitler is struck by an automobile driven by John Scott-Ellis in Munich. The book comes full circle 329 pages later when the Duchess of Windsor sips tea with Hitler in 1937 at Berchtesgaden. In between are some astonishing moments of celebrity frisson.

Consider what Peggy Lee did to President Richard Nixon in the East Room of the White House, the reaction of George Bernard Shaw seeing Harpo Marx in the nude, President Theodore Roosevelt trying to get a word in edgeways with H.G. Wells, and try -- if you will -- to imagine HRH Princess Margaret watching a porn film with Kenneth Tynan.

Brown’s book was published to rave reviews in the United Kingdom last year. Sebastian Shakespeare observed in Literary Review that reading it was much like attending a vast, glorious cocktail party and added “If history is gossip well told, then this book is a triumph of the genre.”

By Steve Becker BIG SWING ON A SMALL DEAL Consider this deal from a team-of-four match. Only a partscore was involved, but even so, the hand is highly instructive.

At the first table, West led the diamond king, East signaling with the nine to indicate a doubleton. West continued with the ace and another diamond, which East ruffed. East could now have saved a trick by cashing the ace of hearts, but instead he returned a trump.

Declarer then collected the rest of the tricks. He cashed the A-K of trumps and K-J of clubs, then crossed to dummy with a trump and discarded both his hearts on the A-Q of clubs to finish with 10 tricks and a score of 170 points.

At the second table, the defense functioned far more efficiently. Here East played the deuce of diamonds on the king to discourage West from continuing the suit, so West shifted to the jack of hearts at trick two.

East cashed the A-Q of hearts and

reverted to diamonds by returning the nine. West won with the jack, cashed the ace and continued with the seven. When dummy ruffed with the nine, East overruffed with the queen.

Then -- as if declarer had not already suffered enough -- East heartlessly returned a heart, promoting West’s jack of spades into another trump trick.

So the declarer at this table went down two -- 200 points -- which was four tricks and 370 points worse than his counterpart had done at the first table.

Mustache Cup Q: I have a mustache cup that I purchased at a flea market. I paid $10 and think it could be worth much more. -- Susan, Metarie, La. A: Maybe and maybe not. It depends on who made the mustache cup, when, and its design. Victorian-era mustache cups are always in higher demand than those made during the 1970s and ‘80s.

In recent years, mustache cups and shaving mugs have become more collectible, and good ones more difficult to find. Look for cups and mugs with elaborate Victorian designs or occupational mugs. A shaving mug with a fireman and hose cart recently sold at auction for $450. In special demand are mustache cups with matching

saucers and left-handed cups and mugs. *** Q: I have several paperback novels from the late 1940s and early ‘50s that I think might be worth a little money. They belonged to an uncle who took meticulous care of his property. How can I find out current values? -- Steve, Ramona, Calif.

A: One of the better references is “The Antique Trader Collectible Paperback Price Guide” by Gary Lovisi (Krause, $19.99). This book proves that you can, indeed, sometimes judge a book by its cover. The colorful, edgy illustrations on the cover of many paperbacks from this period often can translate into real money. For example, the lurid novels about sex, drugs and juvenile delinquency are currently commanding top prices.

Mint copies of “Born to Be Bad” by Sheldon Lord, “Man Hungry” by Alan Marshall, “Incest Street” by Carlton Miller, and “Thrill Kids,” a Gold Medal book with a James Meese cover, are worth as much as $100 each. As with most collectibles,

action-comedy about Moon Nazis can’t hold the line. Pop culture references are delivered in a sort of pretentious manner (a Dr. Strangelove reference does not automatically establish intelligent comedy). The strongest aspect of the film is the surprising quality of the special effects.

PHOTO: Jane Fonda in “Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding” “Dark Shadows” (PG-13) -- This comedy from Tim Burton is a loving take on an old TV series. A wealthy womanizer (Johnny Depp) breaks the heart of a spiteful witch. She takes out her frustration by turning him into a vampire, sealing him in a coffin and leaving him to think about what he’s done for all eternity. Depp makes it out of the coffin to find that the year is 1972, a dysfunctional family has taken over his manor, and the witch who cursed him is still out and about.

Depp and Burton need to stop working together. Depp’s dramatic chops and comedic talent are nowhere to be seen. It’s another episode of the Burton Show: where Depp is a pasty weirdo prancing around in a typical muchlike-”Beetlejuice” affair. The few chuckles aren’t worth the groans.

“People Like Us” (PG-13) -- Sam (Chris Pines) is a slick salesman type who, despite his acumen, sure could use a few more dollars. When his record-producing father passes away, Sam’s only inheritance is a bundle of save

Bring Home Country Living Raise chickens in your back yard in the city? “Why not?” said 36-year-old Alison Holmlund of Santa Cruz, Calif., when the opportunity came her way this past summer. The busy Silicon Valley software executive and mom of three kids under 5 might appear to have enough going on in her life without adding “chicken farmer” to her resume.

“I simply couldn’t refuse when two adorable chicks became available for adoption after being lovingly cared for by children at a farmyard summer camp. I thought adding Ruby and Penny to our family would be a great way to help my city-raised kids better understand where their food comes from,” she told me on a recent visit.

Just then, 3-year-old Jude announced that he found a “Penny egg” in the “Holmlund Hen House,” a sturdy structure built with recycled paneling from a 1970s bedroom remodel, a repurposed refrigerator shelf for a screen, and simple knobs from a dilapidated cabinet. “It’s so much fun for the boys to check for eggs during the day -- sometimes we get up to four. Penny lays light-green-colored eggs, and Ruby’s are brown,” says Alison.

Raising chickens is a real-life application of recycling and learning about the food cycle. “We give them food scraps from our kitchen, and they fertilize the garden

and eat pests,” she adds.

Raising chickens might not be on your to-do list this fall, but there are other activities to bring home a bit of country life.

HARVEST FALL FINDS While farmers bring in their crops, your pre-schoolers also can “harvest” natural items on walks. Look down and not just up as you hunt for acorns, branches with berries, pinecones and fallen bark. As leaves turn brilliant colors, press them in a book between waxed paper when you get home. On a rainy day, make collages, necklaces, place cards and centerpieces for your kitchen table.

Restless Legs Ruin Sleep DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have suffered with restless leg syndrome for 25 years. What causes it? Is there a cure? I do take Requip. Some say that having the veins in your legs stripped helps. Does it? -- C.K. ANSWER: Stabbing pain, a burning feeling and a creepy-crawly sensation in the legs are some of the ways people describe restless leg syndrome.

The sensation mostly comes on in the evening when sitting in a chair or, more often upon going to bed. The night is punctuated with interruptions of sleep, as the sensations wake a person. They drive the person to get up and walk about until these annoying feelings go way. Walking does get rid of them, but the respite is only temporary. The attacks reach peaks at midnight and again around 4 a.m.

For most, a cause cannot be found.

Sometimes it’s a family affair, passed by the parent to the children. In a few instances, iron deficiency anemia, renal failure and Parkinson’s disease are associated with it. The anemia con-

The medicine you mention, Requip (ropinirole) is one often prescribed for this problem. If you’ve been taking it for some time without relief, you ought to try some of the other medicines used for it. Mirapex (pramipexole) and Neurontin (gabapentin) are two others. A new variety of gabapentin called Horizant comes as an extended-release tablet, so medication is delivered to the body throughout the night.

A warm bath before going to bed, coupled with a leg massage afterward, often can cut down on the number of attacks and their intensity. Restricting alcohol and caffeine works for some people. Removing leg veins will not help.

Family Lasagna Recipe This lasagna is meat-free and loaded with veggies. It tastes great leftover, so make it ahead of time and serve later in the week.

2 medium zucchini or yellow summer squash, thinly sliced 2 teaspoons olive oil Salt 1 bunch Swiss chard, tough stems discarded, thinly sliced 1 small (4- to 6-ounce) onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed with press 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves, chopped 1 pound plum tomatoes, cored and thinly sliced 4 no-boil lasagna noodles, rinsed with cold water 2 carrots, shredded 1 cup part-skim ricotta cheese 2 ounce provolone cheese, finely shredded 1. Arrange 1 oven rack 4 inches from broiler heat source and second rack in center. Preheat broiler.

2. In large bowl, toss zucchini with 1 teaspoon oil and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Arrange on 18- by 12-inch jelly-roll pan in single layer. Broil 6 minutes or until golden brown, turning over once. Set aside. Reset oven control to 425 F. 3. Rinse Swiss chard in cold water; drain, leaving some water clinging to leaves.

4. In 12-in. skillet, heat remaining 2 teaspoons oil on medium. Add onion; cook 3

minutes or until soft, stirring occasionally.

Add chard, garlic, thyme and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Cook 6 to 7 minutes or until chard is very soft, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and set aside 5. In 8- by 8-inch baking dish, layer half of tomatoes, lasagna noodles, Swiss chard, shredded carrots, zucchini slices and ricotta, in that order. Repeat layering once.

Top with shredded provolone. Cover with foil. (Lasagna can be prepared to this point and refrigerated up to overnight.) Bake 30 minutes, covered. (If refrigerated, bake, 10 minutes longer.) Uncover and bake 20 minutes longer or until golden brown and bubbling. Serves 4.

Fresh Ricotta It’s amazingly simple to make -- just three ingredients and less than a half-hour required -- and it’s more delicate than store-bought fresh ricotta. Plus, it’s only half the price! Use this rich, fluffy cheese for lasagna, cannoli or simple crostini (with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil or topped with chopped fresh herbs).

Cheesecloth (see Tip) 8 cups whole milk 1 teaspoon salt

1. Line large strainer with 4 layers cheesecloth and place lined strainer in large bowl; set aside.

2. In heavy-bottom 4-quart saucepan, heat milk and salt to boiling on medium-high, stirring occasionally to prevent milk from scorching.

3. Stir in lemon juice; cover and remove from heat. Let stand 5 minutes. With slotted spoon, gently transfer curds from saucepan to lined strainer. Drain 3 minutes. Discard whey in bowl.

4. If not using right away, transfer ricotta to clean bowl, cover, and refrigerate up to 1 week. Makes 2 cups.

Then, in 2009, it became a two-part mini-series (90 minutes each) with Tom Hardy and Charlotte Riley.

In 2008, Natalie Portman was cast to play Cathy in another remake, but other commitments forced her out of the project. She was out, and Michael Fassbender was in as Heathcliff, with Abbie Cornish playing Kathy. By 2009, the director left, as did Fassbender and Cornish. When Peter Webber took on directing, he cast “Gossip Girl’s” Ed Westwick and Gemma Atherton as the leads. More delays and more cast changes. In 2010, director Andrea Arnold cast Kaya Scondelario from TV’s “Skins” series and the “Clash of the Titans: 3D.” In Emily Bronte’s original novel, Heathcliff was a gypsy. Colin Farrell plays a writer who dreams of finishing his screenplay, “Seven Psychopaths,” while surrounded by his best friend (Sam Rockwell), a dog thief; his partner (Christopher Walken), a religious man with a violent past; and a gangster (Woody Harrelson), whose dog has been stolen. Harrelson replaced Mickey Rourke, who dropped out of “The Expendables 2” for this role in “Seven Psychopaths,” then left after creative differences with the director.

You might say he was “Expendable 2” times! *** Another film, shot in 2009, is the $75 million remake of “Red Dawn,” being released Nov. 2. The bad news is that

MGM was financially strapped and couldn’t afford to reshoot the outdated ending to make North Korea the villains instead of China (as in the original film). The good news is that in the three years waiting to be released, two of the leading men have become bigger stars. Chris Hensworth of “Thor” and Josh Hutcherson of “The Hunger Games” were unknowns when cast in “Red Dawn,” but now have huge followings and could mean a big box-office take for the film. After all, it’s always darkest before the (Red) Dawn!

Overseed Lawn Now for Spring Growth Q: I have some brown and bare patches in my yard. My neighbor recommended that I thatch my entire yard, or at least the brown patches, then put some fertilizer and “overseed” the damaged areas. What kind of fertilizer is he talking about? And why seed the lawn now, when winter is coming? -- Fred D., Madison, Wis. A: Overseeding lawns can be helpful in filling in scrawny or thin areas.

The idea is to overseed shortly before the first hard frost. The seeds will germinate and establish roots, which will both help the lawn come in more lush and green in the spring, as well as reduce competition from invasive weeds.

However, it’s important to know what kind of grass makes up your lawn, in order to pick the right kind of seed for the job, as well as the correct type and amount of fertilizer. I’d recommend cutting a small patch of grass (including roots) and taking it to your local nursery or the lawn and garden center of your homeimprovement store.

While you’re getting your grass identified, ask about possible causes of the brown and bare areas. There may be a problem with air, water or

light reaching those areas. Improper or excessive fertilization could be occurring. Or maybe there’s too much water in those areas due to a drainage problem. Identifying the actual cause of the brown and bare spots, and then eliminating that cause, will prevent it from coming back once you’ve repaired those areas.

Once the bare and brown spots are addressed, overseeding (and reseeding bare areas) can take place. For small lawns, a handheld spreader is inexpensive and spreads seeds evenly.

For larger lawns, a rotary spreader works best.

HOME TIP: Prior to overseeding, mow your lawn to less than 2 inches in height if possible and collect the grass clippings so seeds can reach the soil.

Rubbing the leaves tenderizes them and infuses them with flavor. This mix of tender greens, buttery avocado, sweet bell peppers and carrots, and crunchy toasted almonds is delicious. It’s the perfect side dish for a gathering of friends or family. Best of all, you can prepare the salad in advance for a stress-free side dish.

Kale, both the curly and flat-leaf or the dinosaur varieties, is a great choice when selecting a leafy green vegetable. The leaves freeze well and actually taste sweeter and more flavorful after being frozen. Kale is a member of the Brassica family, which also includes collard greens, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. All of these hardy greens contain sulforaphane, a chemical believed to have potent anti-cancer properties and phytonutrients, including powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and alkalizing effects on the body. Kale is very high in beta carotene, vitamin K, vitamin C and lutein, and fairly rich in calcium.

The more mature kale leaves are a nutritious addition to a variety of dishes, especially ones containing

robust meats or spicy flavors. Tender Red Russian or Red Winter kale is the best variety to use for this rubbed salad recipe. If you’re using other types of kale, select leaves that are less than 18-inches long for the best results.

RUBBED KALE SALAD 1 bunch kale, about 1/2 pound 3 tablespoons olive oil 1 1/2 teaspoons coarse sea salt 2 to 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar or Ume plum vinegar 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon maple syrup, agave syrup, or honey 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 avocado, peeled, pit discarded, and sliced 1 red bell pepper, stem, ribs and seedpod removed, diced 1 large carrot, peeled and diced 2-3 ounces slivered almonds, toasted 1. Wash your hands thoroughly.

Rinse and pat the kale dry with paper or kitchen towels. Tear kale off the stems (leave them in large pieces) and place leaves into large bowl. Add olive oil and 1 teaspoon salt to the kale. Begin massaging the oil and

salt into the kale leaves. Massage the leaves until you feel them become soft and pliable, about 2 to 3 minutes.

2. Tear the kale into small pieces or cut into ribbons. Pour off any liquid that may have accumulated in the bottom of the bowl. Place the kale back into bowl. Add in the syrup or honey, 2 tablespoons vinegar and the lemon juice to the kale to start.

Continue rubbing the kale, until all surfaces are coated and shiny, about 2 minutes. Taste a leaf and add the remaining vinegar and 1/2 teaspoon salt, as needed.

3. Add pepper, avocado, bell pepper, carrot and almonds, and toss to combine. Serve cold or at room temperature. Serves 4.

Proper Leash Training Can Prevent Tragedy DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last week a really tragic accident happened just down the street. Our neighbor was walking his 1-year-old German Shepherd, ?Champ,? on a sturdy leash.

The dog tended to tug on his leash or jump away from his owner when something grabbed his attention.

Sadly, when the owner paused to let his dog sniff at a tree on the curb while he waved to a neighbor, Champ suddenly darted into the busy street.

Before his owner could tug him back on the curb, Champ was struck by a car and killed almost instantly.

Please warn your readers to keep their dogs under control and on the sidewalk, even while on a leash, and to pay attention to their dogs during their walks. My neighbor is suffering terrible grief, and I hate to think of anyone else, or their pets, suffering from preventable accidents. -- Sharon in Utica, N.Y. • On Sept. 21, 1938, a powerful Category 3 hurricane slams into Long Island and southern New England. Charlie Pierce, a junior forecaster in the U.S. Weather Bureau, was sure that the hurricane was heading for the Northeast, but the chief forecaster overruled him. All told, 700 people were killed by the hurricane.

• On Sept. 19, 1959, in one of the more surreal moments in the history of the Cold War, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev explodes with anger when he learns he cannot visit Disneyland. Government authorities feared that the crowds would pose a safety hazard.
