My Little Corner

This question has been on my mind for several months, and I’m hoping that honest reader feedback will help me make an important decision. The acronym represents the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association, and the “yea or nay” the question of whether or not Shootin’ the Breeze should apply for membership.

Back in March, I met with executive director Dennis Merrell and his staff at the AWNA office in Edmonton. It was exciting to share my product with people who know all there is to know about Alberta’s weekly publications, and at the same time a little bit intimidating.

I’m proud of what my small team has accomplished, and was thrilled to get a very positive response. We spent several hours going through past print issues of Shootin’ the Breeze and its companion website, and discussing my goals, achievements, concerns and struggles.

I had the opportunity to look at a couple of other papers printed in the same booklet format, and had to giggle when I was asked why I use staples. Apparently that’s something no one else does!

I listened carefully when Dennis explained how he felt I would benefit through membership. He suggested that the paper would be most credible as a member, that I stood to gain revenue through national advertising campaigns and that we would be eligible for recognition of outstanding writing and photography on the provincial and national levels.

I was already meeting all but one of the membership criteria, and would simply have to reduce the percentage of advertising on the front page – everything else was already within their guidelines.

An invitation to apply for AWNA membership was extended and encouraged. And, now that we’ve been publishing for a full year, Shootin’ the Breeze is eligible to join ranks with Alberta’s finest weeklies.

Although we do include elements of news each week, Shootin’ the Breeze is – as the name suggests – more about sharing and telling stories than about reporting hard news. It’s a community paper,

providing a medium to share the positive things we sometimes forget to acknowledge.

So, my first concern was whether I would be required to print content that didn’t match my vision of sharing positive stories. I was assured I would retain total control.

But, there are other things to address, and this is where I’m hoping our readers will help.

My biggest concern is the “blanket” classified ads that AWNA members are obligated to run. Each paper provides this space free of charge and receives commissions only for ads placed through its own office. These ads would take up at least two pages in a publication our size, and I’m not convinced our readers would value this addition. This is something I’m particularly interested to hear back from you about.

By the way, after experimenting for a few months with our own classified section, I’ve chosen instead to offer personal display ads at a reduced price. You can see more information about this on page 9.

I didn’t start the paper in hope of receiving awards or recognition, so I’m not concerned about that aspect of AWNA membership benefits. My goal was to create a positive weekly publication that people could relate to, and to promote goodwill within and between the communities in southwestern Alberta. I could earn more working a nine-to-five job for minimum wage, but I like the thought that what I’m doing makes other people happy, and I love what I do.

Honesty is important to me and, if I’m not causing people to doubt the integrity of myself or my staff, I don’t know that AWNA endorsement is essential for what I’m doing.

So the question goes out to you – over 2,000 people who shoot the breeze with us each week: Do you think we need a stamp of approval from a trade association, or do you think we’re doing all right on our own?

The Breeze Mailbox Trouble with roses?

Did you have trouble with your roses this year? The Oldman Rose Society can help!

With a rainy June, followed by heat for much of the summer, many rose growers were faced with challenges. Over the winter mice can chew and damage roses, even kill them. With the rain and heat, powdery mildew, blackspot and rust can damage and defoliate hybrid tea roses and some shrub roses that are not disease resistant. Insects like leafcutter bees, sawflies and aphids then start chewing and damaging the new rose growth.

Wet conditions can cause balling when the rosebud fails to open. Your shrub roses may have chlorosis, yellowing of the leaves.

Just when you get your roses blooming, the fragrance calls the deer!

Bring your rose problems to our come-and-go sharing session, Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the meeting room of the Pincher Creek pool complex. We will have booths and displays set up to help you overcome all those challenges.

It is still possible to have healthy roses! Everyone is welcome.

Ride Red Rock this Saturday Waterton Lakes National Park is providing a sneak peak at how enjoyable the Red Rock Parkway is when the road is closed to motor vehicle traffic between November and April each year.

This Saturday, cyclists will have the parkway road to themselves by participating in the third annual Ride the Red Rock and Take a Kid Mountain Biking activities.

The event begins at 9 a.m. in the Pass Creek picnic area. The parkway will be closed to all motor vehicle traffic until noon. Participants can ride as far as their interest takes them, whether it’s the first few kilometres or the 30-kilometre round trip all the way to Red Rock Canyon and back.

There will be snack stations, technical assistance and a support vehicle offered by Waterton Outdoor Adventures. Helmets are mandatory for anyone under 18, and highly recommended for everyone else. We encourage children to come with a legal guardian.

After the ride, there will be draw prizes and a community fundraising barbecue provided by Wieners of Waterton.

Another wild night at the Waldorf

Curator Farley Wuth and staff at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village in Pincher Creek are bringing back the Roaring ’20s on Saturday night, and invite everyone to join them.

“Pincher Creek history is not dull or boring,” Farley says.

“There’s always some sort of twist.”

What better twist than to host a gala – A Wild Night at the Waldorf – in a setting based on the town’s only temperance hotel. Although the Waldorf was a dry operation, it was busted for serving booze during Prohibition. It seems to have been a place where rules were tested and limits were stretched.

You may have noticed posts on Facebook already from those looking for ideas and planning to dress in period attire.

Costumes aren’t mandatory, but imagine the fun of being a gangster or a flapper for the night!

The event is touted as an evening of dinner, music, comedy, gambling and “illicit” drinks, based on Pincher Creek in the 1920s.

There will be prizes for the best ’20s costumes, and you can gamble the night away with Kootenai Brown Bucks while enjoying the music of Jacquie Therriault and Kevin Fitzpatrick.

The Windy Hollow Players will be on hand, and you just don’t know what they have planned. Whatever it is, it’s sure to be fun!

Tickets are $50 per couple. If you’d like to attend, please drop by the museum, at 1037 McLachlin Dr., as soon as possible, or call 403-627-3684 to reserve your tickets. Because a meal is involved, time for ticket sales is limited.

Funds raised from the event will be put toward development of an exhibit saluting the 90th anniversary of Pincher Creek Co-op. The old Waldorf building housed the Co-op’s main office and store until 1966.

By Farley Wuth New York City was not the only thriving centre to sport a Waldorf Hotel in the early 1900s. Pincher Creek hosted its own namesake of this fine establishment for close to a full generation.

Pincher Creek’s Waldorf Hotel was located on the north side of town, the only business of this nature situated across the creek from the main downtown core. Its property was on the west side of Bridge Avenue, a major traffic thoroughfare which, nearly a century later, became Bev McLachlin Drive. This was the route of most traffic coming from the north and subsequently served as Highway 6 coming

into town.

The Waldorf ’s location thus was ideal for catching much of that out-of-town trade. Its spot, within a business or two of the creek and within eyesight of Main Street to the south, was still within the downtown core and was central to catching both that business and the surrounding residential trade.

Of the local hotels, this establishment had the briefest history. It was constructed as early as 1900 and remained a hotel until circa 1918. Its impact, however, was significant in that it offered a unique service within the settlement’s fledgling tourism and

WALDORF, continued from page 3 accommodation industries. The structure itself long outlasted its stature as a hotel. During the early 1920s, the building temporarily served as Pincher Creek’s hospital and convalescent home for First World War veterans. Later it housed the offices, hardware department and lumberyard of the Pincher Creek Co-op. The structure was torn down in June 1966.

The Waldorf indeed was a substantial building. Two storeys in height, its frontage – adorned with a main-floor porch and a second-floor veranda – faced onto Bridge Avenue. The veranda was covered by an extension of the structure’s roof and was surrounded by a substantial wooden railing. Outside was attached a handcrafted sign, perpendicular to the building, proudly identifying the “Hotel Waldorf [and] Café.” This strategy allowed the public travelling up and down Bridge Avenue to better see what business this was.

The hotel was a rectangular structure, with its length running to the west. The main floor housed the lobby and billiards room, as well as the dining room and kitchen facilities. Upstairs were rooms where as many as 50 guests could be accommodated.

Customer service was a high priority at the Waldorf. A spring 1909 advertisement in the Pincher Creek Echo proclaimed the virtues of both its dining and accommodation facilities. It offered visitors a choice of either European or American plans. Rates for the former went for 75 cents or more per diem; the latter, which included meals, was posted for a daily charge of $1.50 or up. Offered were “special rates to day boarders or monthly roomers,” which was an earnest attempt to attract long-term boarders. Pioneer hotels found this added to the economic stability of their establishments. Special catering was offered from the dining room, where “private dinner or late lunch” could be obtained by individuals or

groups.

Two pool tables were added to the billiard room in 1909. Next door was the Alberta Livery Stable, operated by Alfred W. Robbins. The two businesses had an arrangement whereby Waldorf guests could stable their horses in the barn while staying at the hotel. Such services were well appreciated by out-of-town patrons who used these beasts of burden for their transportation needs. The Waldorf Hotel also had a telephone installed that year (its number was 127), which was quite a novelty back then.

The Waldorf was thoroughly renovated and refurnished in the late winter of 1910-11.

The most notable feature of the hotel was that it was a temperance facility, where no alcoholic beverages were to be served or consumed. The Waldorf was Pincher Creek’s only dry hotel, which had a certain appeal for consumers of that era. The hotel’s 1909 newspaper ad boldly proclaimed its temperance philosophy.

This stance was not without its moral pitfalls, however. In the midst of the Prohibition era, on New Year’s Eve 1917, the Pincher Creek detachment of the Alberta Provincial Police raided the Waldorf and confiscated several bottles of booze.

Hotel officials were charged and convicted of running a “blind pig,” which meant they had liquor for sale.

Why the establishment wavered from its no-booze stand, particularly during Prohibition, has been lost to the pages of history. Perhaps the hotel, like other Pincher Creek establishments, feared it was suffering economically from being dry and was tempted to offer alcohol in spite of the legal and moral considerations.

Several pioneer names were associated with the operation of the Waldorf Hotel. An early proprietor, H. A. Kanouse, was connected with the establishment in 1909. Two years later, the widow Eva Hartfield served as its manageress.

She and her two young sons – William, born in

September 1908, and Thomas, born exactly a year later – resided in the hotel. The 1911 Dominion Census lists her as running a boarding house.

James Violette was her successor toward the end of the First World War. A dusty ledger, now housed in the Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village archives, served as the guest register for the Waldorf Hotel from 1906 to 1911. It indicates the hotel was well patronized by the travelling public and locals alike, often for the quality meals served there.

Indeed, the district surnames read like a who’s who of Pincher Creek history. Frequent guests from town included A. L. Scotty Freebairn and his brother-in-law, Dr. J. E. Wright; Henry LeVasseur; Dr. Gillespie, who eventually owned the former Schofield house next door; businessmen Walter Jackson, L. H. Hunter and Henry E. Hyde; land agent and former teacher A. E. Cox; tinsmith Robert H. Ormond; former Const. Thomas Craig of the NWMP, Dr. Samuel Hewetson, who practiced medicine in Pincher Creek; and Dr. George Malcolmson, whose practice was first in this community, but later in the coal mining settlement of Frank.

Among the guests from surrounding rural areas was the infamous John George (Kootenai) Brown of Waterton Lakes, who stayed there twice, in 1909 and 1910.

Other guests came from such distant centres as Hillcrest Mines, Blairmore and Coleman in the Crowsnest Pass, Macleod, Lethbridge, Calgary, Winnipeg, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal and Charlottetown (relatives of the Jenkins family), as well as the American cities of Spokane, Washington, St. Paul and New York. There was even one guest from London, England, who signed the register on Sept. 12, 1911.

Most patrons requiring overnight accommodations stayed for lengths varying from one day to two weeks. The costs of their stays, unfortunately, were not recorded in the ledger.

Full weekend of arts and culture

Crowsnest Pass is in the spirit to celebrate Alberta Culture Days this weekend with a great lineup of events.

Admission to the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre is free all weekend, as is admission to Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery.

An opening reception for Alberta Landscapes, an exhibit by the Alberta Society of Artists, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the interpretive centre.

The exhibit will remain on display until Oct. 14.

Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery will host a reception for As I See It on Saturday at 1 p.m. This show features colourful paintings, drawings and clay works by adult special-needs students, and is courtesy of the Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge. The exhibit is on display throughout the weekend.

Local author Barbara Janusz will launch her book, Mirrored in the Caves, Saturday at 1 p.m., also at the art gallery. Don’t miss the opportunity to meet Barbara and pick up a copy of her novel. Barbara has been busy with book launches across Canada, and it will be a treat for her to share her critically-acclaimed work with friends and neighbours. The book is also available to purchase from Crockets Trading Company in Bellevue or to borrow from the Crowsnest Pass library. Mayor Ernie Olsen welcomed a full house of jobseekers and representatives of oil and gas companies to Pincher Creek last Friday. When the doors opened there were people lined up down the hallway!

Job fair a success Ernie Olsen has a dream. He’d like oil and gas companies in Fort McMurray to commit to chartering flights from Pincher Creek Municipal Airport, enabling families to stay together in small communities while benefiting from working in the oilsands.

“At least the workers could be at home and not be driving that damn Highway 63,” the Pincher Creek mayor says.

The town partnered with the MD of Pincher Creek, Piikani Nation, Alberta Human Services and Lethbridge College to bring prospective employers and jobseekers together, and to promote the quality of life offered by Pincher Creek and area.

The room was buzzing with positive excitement Friday morning, and organizers were thrilled with the response.

Ernie says the event started on the whim of a small-town mayor, and came to life a a year and a half later thanks to the efforts of Jo-Ann Callbeck, Laurie Wilgosh and Wendy Kalkan.

Legion celebrates 85 years Lou and Dick Burnham are getting set to party this weekend after five months of anniversary planning.

Both are lifetime members – Lou of the Ladies’ Auxiliary, and Dick of Branch No. 43 – of the Royal Canadian Legion, and are pleased with how things have been coming together.

They’ve been working with Fred White and other volunteers on the organizing committee to throw a little 85th birthday shindig for the Legion’s Pincher Creek branch.

The weekend kicks off with a formal dinner on Friday. It will be a mess dinner, complete with important traditions of the Canadian Forces such as a full-colour party and piping in of dignitaries. After dinner, guests will enjoy dancing to the music of Phil Lethbridge.

Things start bright and early Saturday with a pancake breakfast at 9 a.m. The meal has been sponsored by the Ramada Inn, and Mike and Marie Harder will be flipping hotcakes and looking after the cooking.

A licensed patio will be set up north of the building (in the parking lot) from 12:30 to 6 p.m.

You can grab beef on a bun for lunch, enjoy a cold drink in the sunshine and listen to some good tunes spun by a DJ.

The day is meant to be family-friendly, and there will be kids’ games and prizes given out all afternoon. If you’d rather be inside, the fun meat draws will run from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Door prizes will also be given out all day long.

Whether you play an instrument, carry a tune, or just enjoying listening from the sidelines, you won’t want to miss the jam session featuring local artists at 5 p.m.

Guests will be able to enjoy a smooth lift to the freshly-renovated second floor, courtesy of a brand-new elevator. Guests, staff and caterers no longer need to climb 26 steps to get to the banquet room.

You don’t need to be a Legion member to attend – everyone is welcome.

The Friday evening dinner is already sold out, but the lounge will be open as usual. Take Lou’s advice and call ahead to reserve your steak if you plan to be there for supper! The number is 403-627-4024.

There will be a small charge for the pancake breakfast and the beef lunch, with all proceeds donated to the Pincher Creek Humane Society (SPCA), Children’s World Daycare and Care Bears.

Test drives support students Matthew Halton Booster Club and Friends of St. Mike’s have teamed with Castle Ford to raise funds for enhanced educational opportunities for all students. Kids run for Terry Fox this week The incredible journey of Terry Fox will be recognized and remembered by youth across Canada this week as they walk, run, and support Terry’s dream of finding a cure for cancer.

Canyon School students in Pincher Creek will meet in front of the school at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, and all classes will walk together.

In Crowsnest Pass, all students will be bused to Isabelle Sellon School to walk together to the Blairmore centre access, then west to the forestry building access and back to ISS at 1 p.m.

Matthew Halton School students of Pincher Creek have the option of a two-kilometre walk or a five-kilometre run after their 2:15 assembly Thursday afternoon. Students are hoping to make this the biggest and best event to date, and at least two teachers have volunteered to have their heads shaved if $5,000 is raised.

Friday at 11:30 a.m., Livingstone School students in Lundbreck will walk around the bike path, with the older ones going around twice.

Also at 11:30 a.m. Friday, students of St. Michaels’ School in Pincher Creek will walk the perimeter of the school using the buddy system.

Each student has been asked to send a toonie.

Send a few dollars (or more) to school with your children or grandchildren to support this cause. Cheques should be made payable to the Terry Fox Foundation.

Nigel Whittington poses with a yearling male cougar that was tranquilized and relocated after showing up Monday morning in a residential area of Pincher Creek. Look at the size of those claws! It was a happy ending – no one was hurt and the big kitty will be fine.

Cougar nabbed in town Municipal peace officer Nigel Whittington stopped by our office Monday morning to let us know a cougar had been caught in Pincher Creek.

The animal was spotted at 7:15 a.m. in the parking lot between St. Michael’s Catholic Church and St. Michael’s School. Fish and Wildlife officer Perry Abramenko was called to the scene. The cougar was up a tree and was shot down with a tranquilizer gun.

Pat Neumann noticed the vehicles and commotion near his house and stopped to see what was happening. He and his family had been in their yard the previous evening, so he assumes the animal wasn’t around at that time. Pat watched

the cougar run through his backyard and down the street before the effect of the tranquilizer kicked in.

While under sedation, the animal was measured and tagged and DNA samples were taken.

The photos above show the animal’s size – it covered the tailgate of the truck, and you can imagine the damage it could do with those claws!

Nigel estimates the male yearling cougar weighed about 75 pounds and likely followed some deer into town.

There are eight categories to choose from, covering businesses, individuals and organizations.

The farm family award is for a couple, an individual, a family or an agricultural operation showing outstanding management skills, a strong sense of community spirit and a positive approach to environmental concerns.

There are two categories of business awards for those demonstrating outstanding community spirit and support, and excellent customer service. Small businesses are those with less than 10 employees and large businesses are considered those with 10 or more.

The environmental stewardship award recognizes a unique business or organization showing awareness for the environment and recognition of its stewardship role in the environment.

The customer service award recognizes

businesses and organizations who attract others through their positive attitude, integrity and willingness to go the extra mile for their customers.

The Spirit of Pincher Creek Award recognizes the contributions of a business, organization, committee or individual to making a difference in the community.

The junior entrepreneur award is new this year, and will recognize a business entrepreneur age 30 or younger with strong leadership skills, great drive and determination to succeed, and a good work ethic.

The employee of the year award is also a new one open to all businesses and organizations. This is for a person showing excellent service, integrity and leadership.

Think of people who have made a difference for our community in the past year, and nominate them for recognition.

A note from Coach Tom

By Tom Holoboff Well, football fans, it was another exciting weekend of Mustangs football. First, I would like to give a big shout-out to the Senior Mustangs who, for the second year in a row, brought the league trophy home to Pincher Creek. Big congrats also to the Bantam Mustangs, who were victorious on Saturday.

Unfortunately, the Peewee Mustangs – in Lethbridge for a jamboree on the weekend – did not share the success of their senior siblings.

The peewees’ first game started at 10 a.m., but the Mustangs did not wake up until about 10:30 – by that time, the Coyotes had a four-touchdown lead. The Mustangs ended the game in style, though, with Richie (Wheels) LeGrandeur scoring on a 20-yard run.

The second game saw the Mustangs playing new opponents, the Lethbridge Bulldogs. The Bulldogs scored two touchdowns on their first two plays, which proved the Mustang players were still sleeping. Tch, tch! Kids should not be sleeping at noon! Actually, with the Bulldog players towering over most of the Mustangs, the Pincher Creek players showed extraordinary courage just staying in the play.

After a couple of successful stops, the Mustangs learned that if they use the proper techniques taught by the coaches, size does not matter. By the end of the game, the Mustangs were playing right along with the big dogs. Tate (The Flash) Jensen scored on a long run and Tristen Liscombe scored on a broken play, only to have the play called back due to illegal proceedure on the opposite side of the field. The Bulldogs

won with a final score of 4 touchdowns to 1, but this certainly did not reflect the level of play by the Mustangs.

The last game of the day saw the Mustangs face a fine-tuned machine called the Lethbridge Rams. The Mustangs defence was up to the task, with Hunter (Hit Man) Austring plugging the middle and Tate Jensen and Caleb Jones forcing the outside runs back inside, where Jesse Saulnier and Grace Metcalfe were waiting to make the ball carriers’ aquaintance. The Rams won the final game with a score of 3 touchdowns to 0, but the Mustangs showed much more effort than in the first two games.

In the end, the coaches felt a few players did not give 110 per cent on the field, which left the other players having to pick up the slack. Coach Travis used the example of the chain being only as strong as the weakest link. When that link breaks, the chain fails. Coach Tom felt this was a life lesson to the team, showing that if they don’t do what they are expected to do, with 110 per cent effort, it affects more than just themselves individually and prevents the achievement of group goals.

With the next weekend off, the Mustangs will work on teamwork and learning to play with 110 per cent heart in everything they do. The team has a busy schedule the following weekend, with games in Taber and the game of the year at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, as guests of the Claresholm Raiders.

Until then, this is coach Tom signing off, reminding everyone that every day is a great day for football!

A new note: learning an instrument later in life

By Erin Fairhurst Whenever someone used to ask, “Do you play a musical instrument?” I’d hesitate and say “No” and then follow up with, “Well, not really. I used to take violin lessons as a kid.” To which the enthusiastic response would always be, “Oh wow! So you can play violin!” – to which I’d sadly respond, “Well, not really.”

For me, taking violin lessons as a kid involved a lot of arguing with my mom about practice time, a lot of brave effort from my tireless teacher, Mrs. Wood, and a lot of panic before music festival. Taking violin lessons did not seem to actually involve much playing of the violin. Finally, after about three years of half-hearted warbling, the violin was put back in its case for good. Or so I thought.

I lugged that violin around with me after I graduated high school. And then held onto it after university. I moved a few times. Got married. Moved again. And still the violin waited patiently – dusty and determined to have the last word. I told myself I’d held onto it because it was valuable, and could be worth something one day. Besides, it was a relic of my childhood.

One day, I was asked that dreaded question – “Do you play a musical instrument?” – and this time, when I delivered my customary response, I was answered with, “Well, why not take lessons again?

You know there’s a violin teacher in town, don’t you?”

After some hemming and hawing, I decided to call the local violin teacher, Shelly Groves with Groves Music, to inquire about lessons. Before I knew it, I found myself and my dusty old violin

sitting in her home one evening, ready for my first lesson. Belatedly, I remembered my fingernails were in need of a trim – a big faux pas according to my old violin teacher, Mrs. Wood. When I pointed out my transgression to Shelly, she smiled brightly.

“Don’t worry,” she reassured me. “You’re not actually going to be playing anything this week!”

Learning an instrument as an adult, I discovered, meant having to unlearn a lot of other bad habits – mainly figuring out how to be more patient with myself and getting over being so self-conscious.

Luckily, Shelly’s enthusiasm was pretty contagious and, within a few weeks, I was happily warbling away short little songs that I practised diligently – much to my husband’s delight. Actually, I don’t know how delighted my husband was about the resurrection of the violin, but my dog, on the other hand, loves to sing along!

Aside from the satisfaction of learning a new skill, violin lessons have been a lot of fun. And even better? When I’m at my weekly 45-minute lesson, the only thing I think about is violin – I forget about what I need to pick up at the grocery store, work deadlines, bad weather, and focus all my attention on learning something new. As an adult taking music lessons, I appreciate taking the time to invest in a new skill much more than I did when I was younger.

Now, when someone asks, “Do you play a musical instrument?” I am more than happy to reply with an enthusiastic “Yes!” Erin Fairhurst is a freelance writer living in Crowsnest Pass. When not practising violin, she enjoys canning, cooking and playing outside with her husband and two dogs.

Children’s World Daycare recently took 10 children – who had shown lots of interest in hair, beauty and hygiene – on a field trip to Mirror Mirror Salon in Pincher Creek. Mirror Mirror’s ShirRae and Ellen gave all the children fancy new ’dos and showed them around the salon.

Children’s World sends a great big thank you to ShirRae and Ellen, who graciously donated their time to do the children’s hair for free. The children are still talking about all the fun they had!

Lucille Martin was still smiling as she wrapped up her final day as postmistress at the Cowley post office last Wednesday. Lucille has been the friendly face behind the counter for 30 years.

If you live in Pincher Creek, you might arrive home today to find a clear plastic bag, with a bright yellow sheet of paper inside, hanging on your doorknob.

This isn’t junk mail!

It’s your invitation to make a difference in the community by supporting a one-day food drive.

The drive is sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and proceeds will go to the Pincher Creek Food Bank.

There is always a pressing need for food bank donations, and many would go hungry if not for the generosity of those of us who have a little to spare.

“It’s our role in being part of the community,” says Dave Piepgrass. “We’re grateful for any and all donations.”

Making your donation is easy. Simply place your non-perishable food items in the plastic bag (or any other bag) and leave it on your doorstep prior to 10 a.m. this Saturday. No one will ring your doorbell or solicit donations; members of the church and other community volunteers will simply pick up what is left out for them.

Home-canned food, fresh food and items past their expiry date cannot be

accepted.

Suggested items include: rice, pasta, cereal, juices, baby formula, baby/junior food, peanut butter, macaroni and cheese, dry soup mix, canned tomatoes, canned fish, canned meat, canned soup, canned beans, canned stew, canned vegetables, canned fruit and cheese spread.

If you will be away on Saturday, or live in a rural area and would like to contribute, please give Dave a call at 403-627-3627.

There is also the option to drop your goods off at the church, located at 1240 Wentworth Ave., between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturday.

Perishable items may be taken directly to the food bank, but it’s always a good idea to make sure they can accept what you have to give. You can call the food bank at 403-627-4265 or drop by 622 Charlotte Street.

The food drive was well-received last year, with family groups working together to sort and haul five huge loads of food that had been collected.

Your support will help fill hungry people with hope, and this one-day effort will feed many in our community for months.

The Mustangs defeated Kate Andrews Pride 29–10 to retain their title as Division B champions. The Mustangs have a record of four wins and no losses, and see their next action in Taber on Friday.

Cougar Facts Cougars can usually be found in wooded, rocky areas and may den in dense underbrush, under an overhang of tree branches, under logs or in rock caves.

When threatened, cougars seek refuge in trees, and stay in the limbs of the trees until the danger has passed.

Cougars do not normally prefer flat, open terrain. However, they may be spotted in the river valleys and other wildlife travel corridors that pass through such terrain.

Cougars are curious and adaptable and can survive in territory that provides shelter and a food source such as deer.

Cougars are efficient hunters who silently stalk and ambush their prey from the ground.

Cougars normally prey on deer, elk, moose, sheep and small mammals.

It is thought that cougars have expanded their range in recent years. However, cougars are simply returning to territory that they had previously used, but were removed from.

Cougars normally vocalize only when mating, communicating with kittens or when feeling threatened.

If You Encounter A Cougar Cougars and Humans

Cougars are elusive and prefer to avoid contact with humans, so attacks on humans are very rare. The few cougar incidents with humans that have occurred typically involved children playing outside alone or adults who are jogging, skiing or hiking alone.

Cougars may confuse children for prey species because, like many small prey species, children are small, make quick, erratic movements and have high-pitched voices.

Most cougar incidents in Alberta involve pets. Cougars see domestic cats and dogs as easy prey. When bringing your dog along on a hike, camping or fishing trip, keep in mind that it may attract a cougar.

If hungry and malnourished, cougars will feed on such things as carrion or dog/cat food left in backyards, increasing the risk of human-cougar incidents.

Cougar Encounters If you see a cougar at a distance Cougars grooming or periodically looking away from you may simply be resting. In this case, avoid provoking the cougar:

• Bring everyone in close and back away.

• Do not run and do not turn your back.

• Prepare to use your bear spray.

If the cougar is closer Cougars close and showing such behaviours as hissing, snarling, staring intensely and tracking your movements present a threat. You must show the cougar you are not a prey animal and you are able to fight back:

• Do not run. Do not turn your back

• Make sure children and dogs stay calm. Keep them very close.

• Make yourself look big. Wave your arms, open your jacket and do not crouch down

or bend over

• Use your noise deterrent and bear spray.

If the cougar makes contact

• Continue using your bear spray.

• Fight back with everything you can. Rocks, sticks or your fists should be aimed at

the cougar’s eyes and face.

• If you’re knocked down, get back up. Do not stop fighting.

• Never play dead with a cougar.

“The Mean Season”

by Heather Cochran (Red Dress Ink, $6.99) Reviewed by Ealish Waddell Leanne Gitlin is fairly content with her mundane life in tiny Pinecob, W.Va., working at an unexciting government job, looking after of her mother and brother, and engineering ways to run into her longtime crush around town. At least she has an outof-the-ordinary hobby to keep her busy: running the national fan club for heartthrob actor Joshua Reed.

Still, after seven years cranking out newsletters for the rising star’s evergrowing following, her heart isn’t really in it anymore.

One day, she gets some exciting news: Joshua is finally coming to her neck of the woods. But little did Leanne expect that when she finally met Joshua Reed, he would be such a colossal jerk. And she never could have predicted that, a stolen limousine and one massive DUI later, he’d be living under house arrest in her very own house for the next 90 days.

What seems like a fan’s dream come true is a nightmare for Leanne, stuck night and day with the hostile Joshua’s arrogance, entitlement and mocking attitude toward everything and everyone around him. But as the summer wears on, secrets begin to emerge not only from the closed-up Joshua, but also from friends and family Leanne has known her entire life.

Lives seem to be transforming all around her in Pinecob, and Leanne is forced has to question what she really wants out of hers, and whether she’s really satisfied with the one she’s been leading. After all, if a creep like Joshua Reed can change, perhaps Leanne Gitlin can too.

Light and breezy but with a heartfelt emotional core, “The Mean Season,” new to ebook format, is a delightful read. The “country” characters and setting feel realistic, not corny, and its silly-sweet plot doesn’t necessarily go in the way you’d expect, and is even more pleasing for that. By Steve Becker FIRST THINGS FIRST When there is a sure way to make the contract, declarer should not adopt any approach that might jeopardize it. This principle is self-evident, but the fact is that players occasionally violate it without intending to do so.

Take this case where West led a club against three notrump. Declarer took the queen with the king and tried a heart finesse, losing the jack to Eastâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s king. Back came a club, won by West with the ten, and another club forced out the ace.

South led a heart to the queen, and West showed out. Forced by the bad heart split to turn his attention to diamonds, declarer played the queen from dummy and finessed, whereupon West took the king and cashed two club tricks to put the contract down one.

South was certainly unlucky, but, even so, the outcome was entirely his own fault. He could have ensured nine tricks at the start by attacking diamonds instead of hearts, and he should not have

allowed himself to be distracted by an alternative, but uncertain, line of play.

All declarer had to do was to lead a spade to the ace at trick two, return the queen of diamonds and finesse. Win or lose, he would make at least nine tricks against any distribution.

The early heart finesse opened the door to defeat if East had the king and the suit was unfavorably divided, and therefore should have been avoided.

In effect, South allowed himself to be diverted from his goal because he happened to be in his hand at trick one, making it more convenient to take a heart finesse than a diamond finesse.

Really, they were asking for it.

Charlize Theron is the captain of the ship, and Michael Fassbender plays the erudite android. Fassbender’s performance holds up the film pretty well: He’s detached an awkward enough to be a mixed-up android, but he’s observant and curious enough to be a dangerous intellect. Like many of its peers, the movie shifts from spooky sci-fi exploration to all-out terror near the end.

“The Raven” (R) -- John Cusack stars as the horror-mystery author Edgar Allen Poe in this Gothic thriller. Somebody is imitating the brutal murders described in Poe’s crime stories, so the Baltimore police detectives bring in save

the writer to help solve the case. While it’s well-researched, the film isn’t quite on Poe’s level with its by-the-book storyline and enormous plot holes.

But really, how many well-researched Gothic murder mysteries are coming out these days? “The Raven” is spooky and interesting enough to keep you along for the ride.

“A Cat in Paris” (PG) -- Dino is an adorable house cat in a colorful and stylistic animated version of Paris.

By day, he lives with a little girl who doesn’t speak; at night, he works with an agile human thief who climbs into buildings -- a cat burglar, if you will.

One night, the little girl follows Dino and gets caught by some gangsters planning a heist. Dino and the burglar have to team up and go on a scenic adventure to rescue her.

“Rock of Ages” (PG-13) -- It’s exactly what all the posters promised: a big cheesy musical full of ‘80s hair metal.

A pretty young girl from Oklahoma decides to follow her dreams to the glamorous Sunset Strip in LA. She meets some handsome guy who plays guitar, and then they sing as if their relationship is just so incredibly unbelievable. Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand and Paul Giamatti are there to be funny. Musical numbers are all drawn from late ‘80s rock, including Journey, Bon Jovi and Night Ranger.

All of the music is sung by the actors themselves. No matter how goofy the songs might sound to us today, you’ll always notice that the actors just can’t come close the vocal abilities of the original performers. You’ll be sick of this movie well before the final number.

ANSWER: When people unfamiliar with essential tremor see a person with it, they immediately assume that the person is quite nervous. The shaky hands are a giveaway. It’s not “nerves” that are causing the shakiness; it’s essential tremor. A glitch in one of the brain’s movement-control centers has occurred. Katharine Hepburn suffered from essential tremor.

Not only did her hands shake, but so did her head and her voice.

Essential tremor is a common condition. Its other name is familial tremor, indicating that it runs in families.

Most affected people can find other relatives who have it.

Trembling hands make it near impossible to bring a spoonful of soup to the mouth. Handwriting often degenerates into a scrawl. Buttoning a shirt or coat becomes a herculean task.

I have developed a parasite called pinworms, which I believe came from partly uncooked fish. I used to see them when they exited from my colon (backside). They are fewer now that I take Oregano Leaf Oil. Can they cause other ailments or infiltrate other organs? How does one get rid of them once and for all? -- J.D. ANSWER: Pinworms are an extremely common infection, especially in children. During the night, the female pinworm crawls out of the rectum to lay eggs on the nearby skin. She is tiny, 0.4 inches (1 cm) long. You must have good eyes to see these worms. A magnifying glass is a

big help. Pinworms rarely make their way to other organs. Some speculate that they might be a cause of appendicitis.

Eggs on the skin cause intense itching. Your doctor is best equipped to make the diagnosis. Doctors have the instruments to clearly see the worm or its eggs. Mebendazole (Vermox), albendazole (Albenza) and pyrantel pamoate (Pin-X) have a good track record of getting rid of pinworms.

They are not found in fish.

Undercooked freshwater fish can harbor the fish tapeworm, which grows to a length of 39 feet. It produces few, if any, symptoms. Prolonged infection with it can lead to vitamin B-12 deficiency. For diagnosis, a stool specimen should be sent to a lab experienced in identifying the eggs and the worm segments. Walnut Triangles Mothers wanted a quicker way to make treats for their kids. Baking a bar in a pan, then cutting it into individual servings, was a lot easier than rolling, cutting, and baking multiple batches of cookies.

1 cup (plus 2 tablespoons) all-purpose flour 5 tablespoons margarine or butter, cold 1 1/2 cups (packed) light brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 2 large eggs 1 cup walnuts, chopped 1/2 cup sweetened shredded coconut 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Grease 9- by 9-inch metal baking pan. Line pan with foil; grease foil.

2. Into medium bowl, measure 1 cup flour. With pastry blender or 2 knives used scissor-fashion, cut in margarine or butter until mixture resembles fine crumbs. Firmly press crumbs onto bottom of pan to form crust. Bake 10 to 12 minutes, until golden. Remove pan from oven.

3. Meanwhile, in another medium bowl, with wire whisk or fork, mix brown sugar, vanilla, salt, baking soda, eggs and remaining 2 tablespoons flour until blended. With spoon, stir in walnuts and coconut.

4. Spread walnut filling over warm crust.

Bake 20 minutes or until filling is set and knife inserted 1 inch from edge comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack until filling is firm to the touch.

5. When cool, invert onto wire rack and remove foil. Invert again immediately onto cutting board. Cut into 4 strips, then cut each strip crosswise into 4 squares. Cut each square into 2 triangles. Store triangles in tightly covered container up to 1 week. Ă&#x2018; Each serving: About 105 calories, 5g total fat (1g saturated), 13mg cholesterol, 80mg sodium, 14g carbohydrate, 1g protein.

Two-Bean Harvest Chili This hearty chili recipe is made for chilly autumn days.

2 teaspoons vegetable oil 1 large (10- to 12-ounce) onion, finely chopped 12 ounces (2 cups) carrots, finely chopped 4 cloves garlic, chopped Salt 1 bunches (6 ounces) collard greens, ribs and tough stems removed, leaves chopped 1 tablespoon salt-free chili powder 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1 can (28-ounce) no-salt-added diced

tomatoes 2 cans (15 ounces each) no-salt-added beans, preferably black beans and pink beans, rinsed and drained 1/4 cup reduced-fat sour cream 1. In 6-quart saucepot, heat oil on medium. Add onion, carrots, garlic and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cook 8 to 10 minutes or until golden and tender, stirring occasionally.

2. Add collard greens and 1/4 teaspoon salt and cook 1 to 2 minutes or until bright green and just tender, stirring. Stir in chili powder, cumin and oregano and cook 1 minute, stirring.

3. Stir in tomatoes and beans. Simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Divide among 4 bowls; top with sour cream. Ă&#x2018; Each serving: About 335 calories, 5g total fat (2g saturated), 8mg cholesterol, 410mg sodium, 58g total carbs, 17g dietary fiber, 16g protein.

Lawn Care Safety Q: I was working in my yard and noticed my neighbor’s landscaper using a weed trimmer without any protection from flying debris. Gas-powered professional weed trimmers can be quite powerful and sure enough, almost as soon as I saw him, he struck an area that contained a bit of gravel.

A stone flew up and hit him in the eye, resulting in a trip to the hospital and several days out of work. Please remind your readers to wear safety equipment when using power tools and lawncare equipment. -- Josh G., Indianapolis A: That’s a good point, and one well worth paying attention to. Often, we’re in a hurry to just finish up with the yard work. Or, it’s too hot or too aggravating to put on safety gear like impact-resistant goggles and sturdy gloves. But spending a couple extra dollars to purchase the right equipment and safety gear, and taking a few extra seconds to put it on, can prevent injuries and even save your life.

In fact, there are a number of preventive measures to take before starting yard work. The folks at Topical Biomedics (which, handily, sells a pain relief and healing cream for those post-yard work sore muscles) offer a

few additional tips: --Before doing any heavy yard work, warm up for at least 10 minutes with some lighter tasks.

--Cover any exposed skin with sunscreen to prevent sunburn.

--Face protection: a dust or filter mask should be worn when spreading fertilizer or spraying yard chemicals, and can be a big help to those with seasonal allergies while doing yard work.

--Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect skin from scratches caused by low-hanging tree branches and other plants.

--Wear noise-reducing earmuffs, a hard hat and a steel mesh face visor when using a chainsaw.

HOME TIP: Always give your lawn a quick walk through before mowing, and remove debris like fallen limbs, toys and rocks that could damage your equipment or injure you.

You might try combining healthy ingredients in interesting ways. This recipe for Black Bean and BroccoliStuffed Potatoes is vegetarian dish that has all of the flavors of a nacho or a taco. The addition of broccoli makes it a nutritious and easy-to-prepare meal. You also might try using colorful and interesting dinnerware or place mats.

Involving your child in the meal preparation is another way to ensure that they’ll eat dinner. It’s also the perfect time to make memories and instill healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime.

BLACK BEAN AND BROCCOLISTUFFED POTATOES 4 large russet baking potatoes, scrubbed 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, drained and rinsed 1 (8 ounce) box, frozen broccoli florets, thawed 1 1/2 cups mild or medium prepared salsa 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice

1 tablespoon chili powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese 4 tablespoons sour cream (optional) 1. Prick potatoes with a fork 4 to 5 times per side. Microwave for 5 minutes, turn over, microwave an additional 4 minutes. Remove from microwave and cover with a clean dishtowel to allow potatoes to continue to steam. This provides for fluffier potatoes.

2. While the potatoes are cooking, combine black beans, broccoli florets, salsa and 1/2 tablespoon chili powder, salt and black pepper in a medium bowl. Cover with plastic wrap, leaving one corner folded back to allow any steam to vent. Cook on high for 5 to 7 minutes.

3. Place potatoes on a large plate. Cut top of the potatoes lengthwise with a knife. With a towel, push ends of the potatoes together to split open. Fluff the cooked potatoes with a fork.

4. In another small bowl, combine olive oil, juice, the remaining 1/2 tablespoon of chili powder, and the 1/2 teaspoon salt and black pepper.

Drizzle olive oil mixture over the potatoes and stir gently to combine.

Spoon the black bean mixture over the top. Top with the shredded cheddar.

Pets Not Immune to Gum Disease DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog, “Parker,” had two teeth removed during his last visit to the veterinarian, who said he had periodontal disease.

I always thought that feeding him teeth-cleaning dog treats was enough to keep his teeth healthy, but the veterinarian said no. Can you let your readers know that their pet’s teeth need regular brushing and periodic checkups at the vet’s office? -- Sharon in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

DEAR SHARON: Dogs and cats can get gingivitis, periodontal disease, suffer from tooth loss and be at risk for serious health problems if infections enter the bloodstream.

While treats, chew toys and other products that promote pets’ dental health are fine to use, they are not a replacement for brushing -- at least once a week -- and an annual dental checkup and tooth cleaning.

Purchase a pet-specific toothbrush and toothpaste at the pet store or vet’s office. Human toothbrushes and mint-flavored toothpaste will not do.

Pet toothbrushes often are shaped to fit over one finger so that you can hold your pet’s head still and gently lift his or her lip in order to reach the gums.

Place a small dab of pet toothpaste onto the brush, cradle your pet’s head, and lift his or her lip upward (or downward, if brushing the lower teeth). Brush by starting at the gumline and brushing gently down over the teeth (or upward, if brushing the

lower teeth). Be patient and give your pet lots of encouragement.

Many pets resist having their teeth brushed, so again, be patient and gentle, and give lots of praise and a treat at the end of each session.

• On Sept. 24, 1789, The Judiciary Act of 1789 is passed by Congress and signed

by President George Washington, establishing the Supreme Court of the United States as a tribunal made up of six justices. By 1869 the number of justices was increased to nine.

• On Sept. 30, 1868, the first volume of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved children’s book “Little Women” is published. Alcott dedicated most of her life and writing to supporting her family after her father’s failure at running Transcendentalist school. Her works include “Little Men” (1871) and “An Old-Fashioned Girl” (1870).

• On Sept. 28, 1901, Ed Sullivan, who would become the host of the longrunning TV variety program “The Ed Sullivan Show,” is born in New York City.

During the peak of its popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, Sullivan’s program showcased a wide range of entertainers, including The Beatles and Elvis Presley.

• On Sept. 29, 1913, Rudolf Diesel, inventor of the engine that bears his name, disappears from the steamship Dresden while traveling from Belgium to England. On Oct. 10, Diesel’s body was found in the water. Conspiracy theories began to fly almost immediately. Many people believed (and still believe) that Diesel was murdered.

• On Sept. 25, 1957, under escort from 1,000 paratroopers in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division, nine black students enter all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Ark. Three weeks earlier, Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus had surrounded the school with National

Guard troops to prevent court-ordered racial integration.

• On Sept. 26, 1960, for the first time in U.S. history, a debate between major party presidential candidates is shown on television. John F. Kennedy debated Richard M. Nixon in a Chicago studio.

Nixon refused to wear makeup.

• On Sept. 27, 1989, Zsa Zsa Gabor, on trial for slapping a police officer, storms out of the courtroom in the middle of the district attorney’s closing argument.
