My Little Corner

I’d like to thank those who took time to share their thoughts about Shootin’ the Breeze potentially becoming a member of the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association.

My husband didn’t have a chance to read through the issue where I asked for feedback regarding AWNA until after the paper was printed.

“I don’t like your editorial,” Dennis said to me that morning. He felt I had both posed and answered the question at the same time.

Cary pointed out the same thing while editing. I hadn’t been entirely happy with the ending, and but hadn’t been able to come up with different wording, so it went through as it was.

The bottom line, from my point of view, is that while there would be advantages to AWNA membership, there would be strings attached that are not what I want to see in the Breeze.

The feedback I’ve received indicates our readers don’t wish to see two pages of blanket classified ads, and this agrees with my gut feeling.

Responses supported the notion that a publication focused on positive stories and promotion of community events is appreciated. The warm reception the Breeze has received makes the effort put into its creation and maintenance worthwhile.

This was one of my favourite responses: “When I read your publication I always think of a line from a song by Anne Murray, ‘Sure could use a little good news today,’ and I feel that this is what you are providing. Thank you.”

A few concerned readers wondered when the paper would become an online entity only. They had heard rumours this was coming, and I’m pleased to report there’s no truth to this.

I think there will always be people, like me, who prefer to hold reading material in their

hands. I also know there are many who have embraced the technology that allows them to enjoy their reading material on their smartphones, computers, tablets and book readers.

With this in mind, Shootin’ the Breeze was created with a companion website. Stories are posted online and promoted through social media like Facebook and Twitter. With an average of 8,000 page views per week in September, I think the website is an important aspect of what we do, but there is no intention of replacing the print paper with an online-only version.

One reader said he’d like to see more comics, and others said they’d like more puzzles. The number of pages printed directly correlates to the amount of advertising each week, so this is an issue of space. Regardless of the number of pages, it always seems to be a challenge to fit everything in, but I have committed to at least having the Sudoku puzzle in print each week.

An advantage to the online version is that it offers unlimited space. This allows us to share additional pictures and information along with syndicated material, including more comics and a variety of puzzles. The online edition of the paper also includes recipes, trivia, home tips, book, movie and television reviews, celebrity news, bridge and golf tips, pet advice and crafts.

All past issues of Shootin’ the Breeze are available on our website, and we encourage you to take part in our scavenger hunt that will have you exploring different aspects of the website. If you didn’t keep the questions printed a few weeks ago, we’d be happy to provide you with a copy in print or by email. It’s meant to be an interesting tour, and at the end of November one lucky entrant will win $100 cash for participating.

I have chosen to remain an independent publication rather than an AWNA member, and appreciate those who shared their thoughts and suggestions to assist with this choice.

This is a perfect event for a night out as a couple or for a staff Christmas party – you’ll enjoy a fabulous steak dinner, a fundraising auction and dancing to the music of a live band at the party afterward.

Angels Within Us is a unique group because money raised supports a number of individuals and families in Pincher Creek and the MD of Pincher Creek, in accordance with Alberta Gaming and Liquor regulations.

People sometimes find themselves in need, and manage just to get by on their own. Angels Within Us offers support because no one wants to see friends, family or neighbours just get by when so many members of our great community are willing and able to help. This makes all of us angels, not just the small group who raise and administer money.

Angels Within Us provides a means to reach out and help. Since 2010, over $106,000 has been raised and distributed. Lisa wins opportunity for global service

By Shannon Robin Lisa Manners of Pincher Creek has won the opportunity of a lifetime, and will be heading to India for 12 days in July. She’ll assist in a Free the Children school-building project and learn local history, language and culture while seeing firsthand the social issues plaguing the country.

Of 18,000 students from across Alberta who attended We Day in Calgary last week, Lisa’s name was randomly drawn for this amazing opportunity, worth about $32,000.

This won’t be a solo adventure. Lisa will be joined by one teacher and four other students.

The fact such a fantastic gift will be shared with others is just as exciting to Lisa as winning the prize.

“The cool thing is that this is something I’ve always wanted to do,” Lisa says. “To have the chance to go for free, and to give people from school a chance to go too, is amazing.”

“We hope to select the best team who will bring what they learn there back to Matthew Halton and our community, to keep the notion of service going when we get back,” Lisa says. “I hope we can leave an impression of ‘weren’t those Matthew Halton students great’ behind us.”

Specific criteria for selecting the additional students are being clarified between Me to We and the school.

Through the Adopt a Village program, the Pincher Creek students will join others from across Canada to lift a community in India from poverty through a sustainable project, ultimately giving them hope for a better future.

“Lisa fits the bill for this,” says teacher Susan Robinson. “With her involvement in school and community she is an ideal candidate – she is an awesome ambassador for the school.”

Lisa first became aware of Free the Children and the Me to We philosophy through a Grade 7 school project. In an instant, co-founder Craig

Kielburger became her personal hero.

Lisa’s parents have both worked for nonprofit organizations, and the example Nora and Evan have set hasn’t been lost on their children.

According to Nora, Lisa was on fire after learning about Free the Children, and has been involved with community social and environmental issues from a young age.

Lisa Manners of Pincher Creek is thrilled for the opportunity to work with Free the Children, building a school in India next summer.

Lisa is the student council president at Matthew Halton and has been active with Operation Christmas Child, fundraising and famine events through her church youth group, shoreline cleanups and collection for the local food bank, all while maintaining the highest academic average among Grade 11 peers last year.

In May, Lisa attended Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, a program emphasizing leadership, citizenship and personal growth. Her report back to the Rotary Club of Pincher Creek was impressive, and the ideas she plans to implement are good ones.

Lisa describes RYLA as “the busiest weekend ever,” and it was here she had the opportunity to meet her idol Craig. This cemented her desire to get involved with international service work. Lisa was confident she now had enough support and momentum to get started, five years after Craig became her role model. A ticket to We Day was a great way to begin.

We Day was a first-time event in Alberta this fall, drawing students from across the province willing to commit to taking action on at least one local and one global issue. They were encouraged to rise to their highest potential and were motivated by talks from celebrities, dignitaries and other young people choosing to make a difference.

Spencer West inspired Lisa as he spoke of the obstacles he has faced since losing his legs at the age of five. This amazing man climbed Mount Kilimanjaro last year, and in the spring plans to challenge himself by walking from Calgary to Edmonton. Spencer walks on his hands, and motivates people around the world with his spirit.

“Most impactful was listening to Marc and Craig (Kielburger) tell their story of what they’ve done and share their ideas for how we can stand up for those without a voice,” Lisa says.

Lisa is looking forward to the broader social justice opportunities she’ll find at the University of Calgary, where she plans to major in business.

Nora recently came across a master’s program in philanthropy and non-profit management, and can envision her daughter heading in such a direction to build on the global view she has demonstrated since she was young girl.

For now, we can all cheer her on as she prepares for her inaugural global citizenship journey.

HUDDLESTUN Senior Citizens News

Times change. The news from Fred Huddlestun Senior Citizen Centre will be coming to you on the last week of each month in Shootin’ the Breeze from now on. The power of the press is an awesome thing and not to be taken lightly; it is a privilege to be part of a community-based publication.

Last Tuesday, the first real bad snowstorm happened so the monthly board meeting didn’t. Connie, Lorriene and myself braved the icy sidewalks and pulled together the November calendar, which John Goluk has printed and made available for pickup at the centre. Please take one and make space for it on your fridge.

Highlights to make note of in November are noon lunch, soup and a bun, on the second Tuesday, with your choice of all kinds of games to follow. The Wii game is working well now.

Bingo will go for broke on the second and last Fridays of every month. June Spak and Marian Smith will be calling the numbers and selling the cards at two for $3, with extras $1 each. At five for a dollar, we ran out of 50/50 tickets during the last bingo game.

However, Marian McGarva found a hidden cache of tickets somewhere and donated five big rolls to the centre in time for you to try your luck, in case the bingo numbers don’t work. Everybody is welcome. We serve coffee and a snack after the games.

Coffee with Barbara at 10 a.m. on Wednesday mornings is a dollar for a pleasant social hour.

Looking ahead to the Sunday supper on Nov. 25 at 5 p.m., there is lots of time to register and pay your $7 before Nov. 22. The hostess, Carol Van Gilder, and her helpers feel that a minimum of 20 people is required to make this a special “dining out” occasion. Please keep this date in mind.

Of necessity, this new challenge is a quick overview of the November programs. We will get to the fun stuff seniors remember and forget as I fit into the new time slot.

Find your favourite spot to pick up Shootin’ the Breeze (there are tons of them) and pick up your November calendar as soon as possible at the Huddlestun Centre.

Awesome family fun!

Tom Sorge, Ted Sheldon, George Porter and Don Degen are familiar names some will automatically associate with the band Dust Pan Handle.

The band was formed as DAWN, by Tom, George and Don in the late 1960s when they were teenagers. As the group evolved, they became known as Dust Pan Handle and attracted large crowds to their southern Alberta gigs.

On Nov. 9, the popular band is reuniting for a concert in Pincher Creek. And, just as exciting, all proceeds will go toward Parent Link.

“This is an awesome opportunity to have fun with your kids,” says Diane Bowen-Oczkowski of Parent Link.

Kids can eat and dance for free until 8 p.m., and at 8:30 the event will become a cabaret. There’s no additional cost for those who have paid for dinner, and tickets can also be purchased for the cabaret only. Organizers have worked hard to make sure this is a great event for everyone. Steve and Jessica Atkinson are celebrating nine years in business with Stone’s Throw Cafe – and supporting Crowsnest Pass Food Bank at the same time.

Nine years, baby!

Almost a decade ago, Blairmore became home to Steve and Jessica Atkinson. Only a month after they arrived, the couple opened Stone’s Throw Cafe, and this weekend they’re celebrating nine years of business.

Drop in Saturday between 2 and 5 p.m. for some free coffee and cake, and don’t forget to bring along whatever you are willing to share with Crowsnest Pass Food Bank.

Last spring, Steve and Jessica put together a food drive that attracted 370 pounds of goods from their friends and customers. They’ll be accepting donations until Nov. 9, and hope to triple the previous haul with extra traffic generated by the anniversary party.

“Our customers have become great friends of ours, and we know they’ll contribute to the success of the drive,” Jessica says.

Steve and Jessica moved to the Pass from Jasper. They had a vision for their business, but the idea had already been done there. So, they pulled out a map and looked for a mountain town with appeal. Jessica vividly recalls their first visit to Crowsnest Pass in April 2003. “It was in the middle of a snowstorm and you couldn’t see the mountains at all,” she says. After a few more visits, though, they knew they had found their place.

Today, the Atkinsons are involved community members who have created a successful business. Their family has grown with the addition of sons Avery and Miles, and a third child is on the way. “This is the place for us, and it feels like we’ve always lived here,” Jessica says.

Steve and Jessica both work full time, and over the years the balance between work and life has improved. Once working 70 hours per week, Jessica says it’s now just over 40 thanks to their great employees. “Our staff are reliable, and we have 100 per cent trust in them,” she says. “It’s difficult to find people who will work hard, love their job and take pride in a business like an owner would.”

If you check out the cafe’s Facebook page, you’ll see the majority of posts are related to community events and information. If you follow the cafe on Twitter you may find yourself salivating over the daily lunch descriptions.

Stone’s Throw Cafe had a soft opening in November 2003.

“We didn’t even have a sign, but enough people came,” Jessica says. “They told their friends, and through word of mouth we’ve been able to evolve and grow.”

On the menu you’ll find all-day breakfast, desserts, homemade soups, sandwiches and salads. You can wash this down with a cup of fresh coffee roasted by Crowsnest Coffee Company or Cupper’s of Lethbridge.

Stone’s Throw Cafe is open Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can find them across from the gazebo on Blairmore’s main street.

YOUth Matter

Members of Creation Nation, in partnership with Boys and Girls Club of Crowsnest Pass, are promoting youth involvement in the community.

Last Saturday these young people had a blast sharing their creativity and imagination with kids and parents who came out for the Halloween Extravaganza in Bellevue.

The Crowsnest YOUth Matter program is

in the running for a $50,000 prize from Aviva Community Fund, which supports ideas that create positive change for Canadian youth at risk.

Program assistants (PAs) are an important component of the success of the Crowsnest Pass CanSkate program.

The role of the PA will vary depending on the unique needs and dynamics of a club but all duties involve assisting Irene Fraser, Skate Canada certified coach, in the delivery of the program.

The responsibilities of a PA may include assisting in delivery of the program on-ice and off-ice, demonstrating skills and teaching progressions, supervising practice sessions, leading warm-ups and cool-downs, circuits, drills and group activities, reinforcing learned skills (following up on coach instruction), distributing awards (stickers, badges, etc.), taking attendance and being a role model for young skaters.

This experience benefits our senior skaters in pursuit of coaching endeavours, as well as individual CanSkate members with their development and success.

Thank You! It was another successful Halloween Extravaganza!

Thank you so much to the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass for donating the gym and kitchen, FCSS for supplying lunch, indoor playground, Scouts, Bellevue Underground Mine, Brighter Futures, Boys & Girls Club of Crowsnest Pass and Crowsnest Pass Municipal Library for coming up with all the wonderful games and activities and supplying so many volunteers to help pull this event together, Tara-Lynn Reynolds for doing all the photography of the amazing costumes, Charlie the face painter and Jaime Reeve for adding so much colour to our already colourful kids, and finally to all the wonderful families who come out to make this a wonderful day for our community kids! Thanks so much!

Also, we can’t forget our local businesses that contributed. Thanks to Black Rock Pizza for donating the prize for the jellybean count, Sobeys for donating the cookies for decorating, and Super Valu for the chips!

It is a really cool event. It started three years ago with a bunch of us moms at Brighter Futures, for a program remembering Halloween events from our childhood. We were all on various non-profit boards, and most of us were located in the MDM building, so we thought what if we all just picked one activity to do as organizations and co-ordinated them into one big event for the local kids?

We put the word out, and our first year we got over 200 people!

It became an annual event after that – we do live in a pretty amazing community!

Dust Pan Handle Reunion Concert

The founding members of Dust Pan Handle were Tom Sorge on lead and rhythm guitar, bass and vocals, Ted Sheldon on lead and rhythm guitar, bass and vocals, George Porter on drums, and Don Degen on keyboards and vocals.

The music began for Tom, George and Don about 40 years ago, much before Dust Pan Handle was formed back in the late ’60s.

As teenagers, these three came together with a few other locals to form a band called DAWN. DAWN played at high school dances, weddings and private functions throughout southern Alberta.

As young and very raw musicians, the young men had pretty rudimentary gear (guitars, drums, amps and PA systems), but developed a bond that was the music. In fact, they were still so young that two of their mothers, Lois Sorge and Jackie Degen, actually risked co-signing a loan for their sons to buy a speaker system.

DAWN soon picked up a couple of other players and began to grow. The group was influenced by the music of the day – great bands like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Three Dog Night and other masters.

Sadly, when high school finished, DAWN did too as the young men moved on to school and other jobs: Tom in Calgary, Don in Edmonton and George staying near Pincher Creek.

But, as they say, “The music in you never dies!” Tom and Don stayed in touch, and in their 20s performed a few shows together at what was then the Alberta Hotel and the King Eddie in Pincher Creek.

Then in Calgary, Tom and Don started jamming a bit and met Ted Sheldon, who just happened to be a guitar player with a great voice. Ted proved to be a great addition – the music and the vocals really came together.

Randy Real, a great drummer from the Pass joined next, then George, after Randy passed.

Dust Pan Handle began. By then it was the mid to late ’70s. With all of us still geographically challenged, somehow we make it work. For us it’s been about 35 years as Dust Pan Handle.

Our musical interests have always been very similar. We play a wide range of tunes from the ’60s, ’70s and a bit from the ’80s by groups like the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Eagles, the Doobie Brothers, Jackson Browne, Van Morrison and many others.

On Nov. 9 join us for an exciting two-in-one eveny to raise funds for the Pincher Creek Family Resource Society and Parent Link Centre.

The first event is a family dance and supper from 5 to 8 p.m.

Doors at the Community Hall

will open at 5 p.m.

a sure-to-be fabulous supper of

stuffed pork, to be served at 6 p.m.

We will have prizes for spot

dancing and a few other fun events.

All ages are welcome.

Children under the age of 17

will eat and dance for free until

8 p.m.

All tickets must be purchased in advance.

This is an alcohol-free event.

The second event is a cabaret featuring Dust Pan Handle from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Adults only. No children are allowed.

All tickets are $15 per person.

There will be a cash bar.

Adults who have a ticket to the

family event may stay without

purchasing another ticket.

Tickets must be purchased in advance.

All proceeds will go toward new equipment, toys, Lego, etc., to help enhance very successful programs like Lego League, Gymtastics, new moms group, playgroup, Move, Groove and Explore, clothing giveaway events and more.

This is an awesome opportunity to have fun with your kids, or come later to the cabaret.

Slowly, the idea for a humor magazine began to take shape.

In 1952, Gaines and editor Harvey Kurtzman launched a comic book, which expanded into a magazine three years later. Despite its original cover price of just 10 cents, it became one of the country’s most imitated and influential satirical publications -- famous for its biting wit and groundbreaking parodies. At its peak, Mad magazine had a circulation of more than 2 million copies a month.

During Gaines’ reign, the magazine hardly changed at all. Each month, it contained 48 black-andwhite pages printed on uncoated paper. Even though cheap imitations occasionally surfaced, no other publication could match its wacky content.

If the magazine had a cover boy, it was Alfred E. Neuman. Kurtzman saw a postcard in 1954 depicting a grinning halfwit kid with the caption “Me Worry?” Intrigued, he added the character to the publication and even featured Neuman on the cover as a write-in candidate for president in 1956. (Spoiler alert: Neuman lost, but was such an outrageous hit that his image returned in the next issue as an addition to Mount Rushmore.)

Although most of the featured items in this book are decades old, many still retain their original bite and focus. For example, “The Odd Father,” a takeoff on “The Godfather,” “Rockhead” (“Rocky”), “Saturday Night Feeble” (“Saturday Night Fever”) and “M*U*S*H” (“M*A*S*H) still are laugh-out-loud funny.

By Steve Becker HOOK, LINE AND SINKER Assume you’re in four hearts and West leads a trump. You win with the nine and observe that the outcome seems to depend entirely on who has the ace of clubs. If East has it, you have 10 tricks; if West has it, you have only nine tricks.

However, you should not allow the contract to hinge solely on a favorable position of the ace of clubs.

Perhaps the opponents can be induced to make a mistake that will let you get home safely even if West has the ace.

In line with this, you lead a low diamond at trick two, playing the king from dummy after West follows low. When the king wins, you play a trump to the ace and lead another low diamond.

Let’s say West plays low again, hoping his partner has the queen and figuring that his play otherwise makes no

difference. West soon finds out he’s wrong. After dummy’s jack wins, you become certain of the contract, no matter who has the ace of clubs.

You next cash the A-K of spades and ruff the nine, then exit with the queen of diamonds. West takes the ace but must hand you a 10th trick, whether he returns a spade, a diamond or a club.

Some players might consider this a tainted accomplishment, since West could have stopped you from making the contract by taking his ace of diamonds earlier. In that case, you would eventually have lost three club tricks and gone down one.

But it would be wrong to criticize the recommended approach on that ground. Part of the skill in bridge consists of creating pitfalls for your opponent to fall into, and that is what you did here by leading a low diamond twice toward dummy’s K-J-x. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Merida tries to thwart her own arranged marriage. When that doesn’t work, she tries to use dangerous magic to change her fate.

While “Brave” has its strong points, it falls short of Pixar’s greatest hits. The pacing can get on your nerves, for example. The tone can get a little dark.

It’s not enough to scare the kiddos or keep them from enjoying the tale. It’s a pleasant departure from the typical princess story with a good helping of slapstick comedy and amazing visuals.

Punched-Tin Can Candle Holders It’s time to start saving tin cans for this gift-giving idea for the holidays. Your eco-friendly school-age kids not only will like the recycling aspect of this punched tin tealight candle holder, but they’ll also have a great time pounding nails into the tin and ice to create an imaginative design.

4. Run warm water over can until ice melts. Remove ice and dry can.

1. Fill the can near to the top with water and place in your freezer to freeze.

You may wish to draw the outline of a leaf or pumpkin for Thanksgiving. For December holidays draw a pine tree, holly, star, bell, menorah, 2013 or other festive holiday symbol. Choose shapes that are easy to create dot to dot. Leave space near the top rim and base for adding ribbon.

3. Place the can on its side on the towel.

Hot Flashes Can Last Into the 70s DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you please tell me if there is something I can take to get rid of hot flashes?

I am 74 and have them all the time.

I sweat terribly. I have tried Estrace (female hormone), Estroblend (a dietary supplement) and black cohosh (an herbal remedy). -- M.B. ANSWER: It’s said that 8 percent of women still have hot flashes into their 70s. Most women get over them in six months to five years after menopause. The drop in estrogen production that occurs with menopause affects a part of the brain that regulates body temperature. The brain’s thermostat is thrown out of whack, and the result is spells of sudden, uncomfortable warming with sweating.

Let me give you the usual recommendations made for control of hot flashes. I’m pretty sure you must have tried them after more than 20 years of putting up with flashes. Dress in layers so that outer garments can be shed at the first inkling of a hot

flash. That can keep it from becoming a full-blown one. Keep ice water on hand and drink it at the start of a flash. Cut back on caffeine. Slow, deep breathing at the onset of a flash is said to minimize it.

Estrogen, which you have tried, is the most effective treatment for flashes.

It should be taken in as low a dose as possible for the shortest time possible. Maybe a different estrogen preparation would work for you.

Effexor and Lexapro, two antidepressants, have met with success in suppressing hot flashes for some women.

Here they are not used for their antidepressant action. It’s an example of medicines that have more than one function. Neurontin (gabapentin) is a seizure-control medicine that is also used for control of hot flashes.

Hot flashes that have lasted as long as yours call for a consideration of conditions other than estrogen deprivation. An overactive thyroid gland, a hidden infection and two unusual tumors -- carcinoid and pheochromocytoma -- are examples of illnesses that produce symptoms similar to a hot flash. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am 84 years old. Recently I had a CT scan of my abdomen. It revealed multiple diverticula in the sigmoid colon. Will you please explain diverticulitis to me, and what I can expect from it?

Hearty Fish Chowder Cod, bacon and potatoes make this creamy chowder rich and satisying.

4 slices center-cut bacon 1 large carrot, chopped 1 medium (13-ounce) celery root, peeled and chopped 1 large (12-ounce) all-purpose potato, peeled and chopped 2 small (4 to 6 ounces each) onions, chopped 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 cup clam juice, bottled 1/2 cup water 1 pound skinless cod fillets, cut into 1-inch chunks 1/2 cup reduced-fat (2 percent) milk Salt Pepper Fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves, chopped, for garnish 1. In 6- to 7-quart saucepot, cook bacon on medium 5-7 minutes or until browned and crisp, turning occasionally. Drain on paper towels; set aside. Discard all but 1 tablespoon bacon fat.

2. While bacon cooks, in large microwavesafe bowl, combine carrot, celery root, potato and 2 tablespoons water. Cover with vented plastic wrap and microwave on High 5 minutes or until vegetables are just tender.

3. Keep saucepot with rendered bacon fat on medium. Add onion and cook 6-8 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally. Add carrot mixture and cook 2 minutes, stirring.

4. Add flour and cook 2 minutes, stirring.

Add clam juice and water, and whisk until smooth. Heat to boiling, stirring occasionally. Add cod chunks, cover and cook 4-5 minutes or until fish just turns opaque throughout.

5. Stir in milk, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Cook 1 to 2 minutes or until hot but not boiling.

Crumble reserved bacon. Spoon chowder into shallow bowls; garnish with parsley and bacon. Serves 4. • Each serving: About 310 calories, 7g total fat (3g saturated), 64mg cholesterol, 595mg sodium, 35g total carbs, 5g dietary fiber, 27g protein.

Firewood Tips Q: Last year, we ordered a cord of firewood, but the weather was so warm that we barely used half of it in our fireplace. Is the remaining half still good to use this winter? -- Frank in Marlborough, Mass.

A: Stored correctly, firewood can last for several seasons if need be, so your remaining half-cord should be fine for use this winter. It has continued to season and is probably much drier than it was last year, meaning it will likely catch and burn faster.

Large amounts of firewood that will be stored through the winter and into the next cold season generally should be kept several feet from the house at minimum. The wood should be kept off the ground -- loaded on a pallet or a storage rack -- and stacked even-

ly. This creates good airflow between the logs, allows it to dry quickly after a rain storm, and reduces the number of insects that take up residence in the stack, as well as discourages rodents from creating nests in it.

How much firewood you should purchase and store each year is entirely up to you. I’ve often passed homes in the Northeastern countryside that have several cords of neatly cut wood stacked underneath the crawlspace of outlying barns, sheds, or sometimes even the houses themselves. In suburban and urban areas, this is probably not acceptable to the neighbors or may violate local ordinances.

Plan to have no more than two winters’ worth of firewood stacked near your house. The amount depends on how much you use your fireplace, and whether it is a necessity to warm the home or just a decorative element.

While I’m not a diabetic, my family medical history provides a cautionary tale. The American Diabetes Association estimates that 23.6 million people in the U.S. have diabetes, but only 17.9 million people actually have been diagnosed. This means approximately 5.7 million people have diabetes and don’t know it.

Because so many Americans -- including my husband, mother, father, youngest sister and many other family members and friends are diabetics -- I decided to collect 150 of my favorite, healthy recipes and create “The Kitchen Diva’s Diabetic Cookbook: 150 Healthy, Delicious Recipes for Diabetics and Those Who Dine With Them.”

Throughout “The Kitchen Diva’s Diabetic Cookbook,” I’ve prepared recipes suitable for a diabetic that also are satisfying for nondiabetics. I use these recipes when entertaining family and friends.

This easy-to-use cookbook addresses the health and dietary needs of pre-diabetics, juvenile diabetes, Type I and Type II diabetics, women with pregnancy-related diabetes, those with diabetic-related complications or anyone seeking to embrace a healthier diet and lifestyle.

Diabetes symptoms vary depending on how high the blood sugar is elevated. Some people, especially those with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes, may not experience symptoms initially.

In type 1 diabetes, however, symptoms tend to come on quickly and be more severe. Although type 1 diabetes can develop at any age, it typically appears during childhood or adolescence.

Type 2 diabetes, the most common type, can develop at any age and often is preventable.

Some of the signs and symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes are increased thirst; frequent urination; extreme hunger; unexplained weight loss; the presence of ketones in the urine

(ketones are a byproduct of the breakdown of muscle and fat, which happens when there’s not enough insulin); fatigue; blurred vision; slow-healing sores; mild high blood pressure; and frequent infections, such as gum or skin infections and vaginal or bladder infections.

This recipe for Crispy Roasted Chicken is from “The Kitchen Diva’s Diabetic Cookbook.” It’s easy and delicious, and provides a healthy meal for diabetics and those who dine with them during the holidays ... and every day!

CRISPY ROASTED CHICKEN This is one of my family’s favorite chicken dishes. I usually prepare it for Sunday dinner after church and for holiday celebrations. Sprinkling the skin with baking powder helps draw out the moisture, so the skin gets crackling crisp in the oven.

1 (5 1/2 to 6 pound) whole chicken, or 5 pounds breast, drumsticks and thigh parts 1/2 tablespoon baking powder 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 tablespoons garlic powder 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper 1 small onion, halved 1 lemon, halved 8 sprigs rosemary 4 cloves garlic cloves, smashed 2 teaspoons minced fresh thyme Cooking oil spray 1. Remove the neck, giblets and any pieces of fat inside of the bird. Rinse the bird with cold water inside and out. Remove any excess fat and leftover pin feathers. Pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Sprinkle the chicken skin (breast side only) with the baking powder.

Place the chicken on a roasting rack in a large

baking pan and let it air-dry in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Pat the chicken dry with more paper towels.

2. Spray a large baking pan with cooking-oil spray. Rub the olive oil all over the chicken.

Turn the chicken breast side up, twist the wing tips and tuck them behind the bird. Sprinkle the chicken inside and out with the garlic powder, poultry seasoning, salt and pepper. Rub the spices inside and out of the bird, or if using parts, on both sides. Stuff the cavity with the onion, lemon, rosemary, garlic and thyme, or place aromatics under the chicken parts 3. Preheat oven to 425 F. Place the chicken in the upper half of the oven and cook, uncovered, for 15 minutes to brown and crisp the skin. Lower the oven temperature to 350 F. Spray the chicken with the cooking-oil spray.

Roast the chicken for an additional 35 to 40 minutes, or until the juices run clear when a thigh is pierced with a knife, or an instant-read thermometer inserted in the thigh and not touching bone registers 165 F. 4. Remove the chicken from oven and allow it to rest, uncovered, for at least 10 minutes prior to carving. Do not cover the meat because it will steam and soften the crispy skin. Makes 10 servings.

Is there anything we should do to prepare our house to welcome our new dog when he or she arrives? -- Clarice H., New Orleans DEAR CLARICE: First of all, congratulations! Adopting a pet from the shelter is a great choice. Second,

there are many things you can do ahead of time to make your house dog-friendly. The shelter may have some information to guide you as well, but here are some basic things to add to your list.

--”Pet-proof ” your house. In much the same way as parents need to childproof their house, pet owners need to make dangerous items difficult to access. Things that can be chewed on, that can splinter or break into small pieces, should be kept off the floor and off things that are puppy height (like the coffee table).

--Set up a living area for your puppy, in a comfortable spot out of the way of foot traffic. Place its pet bed there, along with chew toys.

--Have your dog’s leash, collar and other items ready and waiting. You’ll want to purchase these after you’ve chosen your puppy but before bringing it home.

--Set up a file among your house-

hold papers specifically to hold your dog’s adoption information, shot record, registration and other pet-related data. You also should keep a copy of these papers in a separate location.

--Include your new pet in family emergency planning. If you have an evacuation or shelter-in-place kit, add dog food, treats and other essential items.

• On Oct. 30, 1893, the World’s Columbian Exposition closes in Chicago. Fairgoers were offered a chance to see the first gas-powered motorcar, an alternating-current power plant, a 46-foot-long cannon, a 1,500-pound Venus de Milo made of chocolate, and Juicy Fruit gum.

• On Nov. 4, 1922, British archaeologist Howard Carter and his workmen discover a stone sarcophagus containing three coffins nested within each other.

Inside the final coffin, which was made of solid gold, was the mummy of the boy-king Tutankhamen, preserved for more than 3,000 years.

• On Nov. 3, 1930, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel between the United States and Canada is officially opened to auto traffic. Each end of the tunnel had a 100-foot-tall ventilation tower; each

tower held 12 huge fans, six for pumping fresh air into the tunnel and six for exhaust. The tunnel’s ventilation system still works just as well today as it did 80 years ago.

• On Oct. 29, 1948, a killer smog continues to hover over Donora, Pa. The town’s steel mills and a zinc smelting plant had released excessive amounts of sulfuric acid, carbon monoxide and other pollutants into the atmosphere. Over a five-day period, the smog killed some 20 people and made thousands more seriously ill.

• On Oct. 31, 1950, 21-year-old Earl Lloyd becomes the first black man to play in an NBA game when he takes the court in the season opener for the Washington Capitols. The Capitols had picked him in the ninth round of the draft. After seven games with the Capitols, Lloyd

was drafted into the military and sent to Korea for two years.

• On Nov. 1, 1967, “Cool Hand Luke,” starring Paul Newman as a tough, antiauthoritarian, poker-playing prisoner, debuts in theaters. The film contained the now-famous line: “What we have here is a failure to communicate.”
