My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin I’m envious of those who can close their eyes and immediately drift off to sleep, regardless of where they are or what’s going on around them.

My husband is one of those people, and it makes me insanely jealous because I’m the exact opposite – I’m an insomniac.

I can be so tired that I can’t keep my eyes open or keep my head from bobbing, but as soon as I try to close my eyes to catch some zzz’s, I can’t seem to take the final steps to dreamland.

It’s frustrating, and I’m looking for some tried-and-true insomnia busters.

The other day I took my daughter to an appointment in Lethbridge, and by the time we got there, fatigue was weighing heavily on me. I decided to stay in the car for a nap.

I knew from previous experience my chances of actually getting to sleep were slim, but I had a long day ahead of me and figured it couldn’t hurt to try. A nap would be so much better than a caffeine jolt, if I could just make it happen.

I cranked up the thermostat and blasted the fan to warm the car up to a snugly dozing temperature. Next, I adjusted the seat and tried to find a comfortable position. The final step was using my jacket to cover my head. I don’t like people watching me sleep, so that was my attempt at being incognito in a busy parking lot.

I had 30 minutes.

I tried deep breathing and visualization, changed positions many times and was about to be swept away by the sandman when something started beeping obnoxiously. It was one of my battery-operated car gadgets that had been left turned on and was announcing loudly that it would like some attention.

I had been so close to reaching sleep, surely all I needed to do was close my eyes and I’d be able to pick up where I had left off. Wishful thinking

never hurts.

It took longer this time. I heard car doors slamming, vehicles driving through a large puddle, and children laughing. I wished for a pair of earplugs to block the noise.

I think for a minute I might have sawed a log or two, but my good fortune was cut short again.

This time by my cell phone slipping off the console and making much more noise than it should in the process.

Rats! I picked up the phone and checked the time – I was down to seven minutes. I closed my eyes and started all over again.

I was in a complete state of grogginess when Jaiden tapped on the window. Her appointment was finished, and so was any hope of a few precious moments of sleep.

I pulled in at the nearest gas station and filled the car with fuel (at 10 cents a litre less than it is locally, by the way) and myself with caffeine.

I’ve heard catnaps are the best ones – those little 15-minute intervals of sleep that rejuvenate and refresh you. I say I’ve heard this, because I don’t think I’ve ever experienced one!

But I try. Maybe the trouble is simply that I try too hard.

I’ve always been a bit of a night owl, and insomnia has been a companion of mine for about 20 years. It wouldn’t be so troublesome if I could combat it with a nap, but I seem to be losing that battle.

Do you know the song “Morningtown Ride”?

This is the closest thing to a lullaby I recall my parents singing. Maybe I should ask Mom and Dad to make a recording and let it play over and over until I finally drift off to sleep.

How do you fight insomnia? If you’ve got any suggestions please send them my way. I’ve tried many things over the years, and some new experimentation might be fun.

In 1986, concerned residents of Hinton launched a family violence education and prevention campaign. This local, grassroots effort inspired the Alberta legislature to support family violence prevention as an ongoing provincial initiative, and led to the inception of Family Violence Prevention Month.

Today, hundreds of Alberta communities and thousands of individuals are actively involved in preventing family violence through education and service provision.

Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter

Interested in becoming a Rotary exchange student?

The Rotary Club of Pincher Creek is looking for local young people who are interested in attending secondary school overseas for one year as part of an international student exchange program.

To qualify, a student should be between the ages of 15 and 19, in the upper third of his or her academic class, of good character and emotionally stable, and be in good physical condition. Most importantly, he or she must be able and willing to be a good ambassador.

The student, or the student’s family, is expected to pay travel and insurance costs, and to provide some spending and emergency money. The total cost is approximately $6,500. Room, board and schooling are provided by the host Rotary club and family.

Annually, 7,000 students from more than 80 countries take part in exchanges sponsored by Rotary clubs world wide. The Rotary Club of Pincher Creek has hosted students from Norway, Germany, and Thailand and presently from Taiwan. The club is also interested in finding host families for our incoming student. In general the exchange student stays three to four months with each host family.

Student application forms can be found on the web under www.Yex5360.org . Completed forms need to be submitted to your school secretary by Dec. 7, and interviews will follow shortly thereafter.

The student who is accepted into the program will be notified early in 2013, and will begin his or her exchange in August 2013.

Parent Link hosts an awesome night out

Dancing to the music of a live band isn’t a regular occurrence for today’s kids. Dancing to music played for their benefit made Friday night even more special for local children and their families.

In all, 75 kids and more than 250 adults partied to the awesome sounds of Dust Pan Handle.

The reunion concert served as a fundraiser for Parent Link in Pincher Creek, and organizers were thrilled to realize a profit of $2,000.

“Even more exciting was watching the kids and families dancing together, because that’s what we’re about,” says parent educator Diane BowenOczkowski, who co-ordinated the event.

Diane has been busy since the call came in that Dust Pan Handle would like to hold a reunion concert, with Parent Link as the beneficiary.

A tricky task was creating a function that

focused on kids, while at the same time allowing adults to stroll down memory lane with band members who used to rock Pincher Creek.

In the end, the solution was perfect. Tickets were available for anyone to attend the dinner and dance until 8 p.m., and from that point on it became an adults-only evening out.

Known as the band years ago, the local fellows played for every hot event and wedding in town.

Band members showed they’ve still got it as they rocked the house with a variety of music that had people dancing from the first notes of the night to the last.

Diane and other Parent Link staff members heard all kinds of stories about the band in the weeks leading up to the event, and were thrilled they were every bit as good as rumour had it.

were dancing. They finally pulled the plug shortly after 1 a.m., but Diane says people still stayed around because everyone wanted a chance to visit with the guys.

“They were amazing,” she says.

The group jammed in the afternoon (the first time they had played together in several years), played an hour for the family dance and then all night for the adults.

Diane says the band donated their time for the event, an anonymous donor paid for the hall rental, and Barry and Sophie Carney of Simply Catering were “extremely generous and supportive.” She thinks it would be a great annual event.

By night’s end there were many tired dancing feet, and everyone left smiling.

Got socks?

Shael’s Socks From Santa is back due to popular demand and a little boy who hasn’t stopped caring.

The program was launched last year when boxes were placed around Crowsnest Pass for people to donate socks, underwear, toys and other items to children for Christmas. The idea stemmed from Shael Davidson’s desire to collect socks for other children, upon learning some families have less.

Shael, just four at the time, saw a PBS program last fall about recycling in the Third World in which a boy was shown wearing dirty clothes and no socks or shoes. Shael asked his dad, Mike, why the boy had no socks. “That’s just how a four-year-old’s mind works, and that was just his observation,” Mike says.

Mike explained to Shael that while they could not send socks to the boy on TV, other children in the Pass may need some. The Davidsons began asking family and friends for donations. “It was just supposed to start out as something very simple,” Mike says, but more people kept asking for boxes. “It kind of took on a life of its own.”

Popular demand has brought the program back this year, as people have been asking since summer if Shael’s Socks From Santa would be continued. “With encouragement like that, it’s impossible not to move forward and do it again,” Mike says.

Shael, now five, is still interested in the program. “As long as he wants to do it, I’ll continue to be involved in it,” Mike says. “He was just as excited to do the program this year as he was last year.”

Both Shael and his sister Aeris, now three, were thrilled last year when they saw socks donated. “I just thought that was pretty cool for them to get excited over something as simple as that,” their dad says.

According to the food bank, the children who received the socks were excited as well, he adds.

Last year, Shael set a goal for 250 pairs of socks. Mike didn’t think the number was realistic and didn’t want his son to be disappointed.

Instead, with over 450 donations they actually collected over 700 pairs. Most of the clothes were new and still in their packaging. “The

results completely blew me away,” Mike says.

This year, the goal is to do even better than 450 donations. “We’re pretty sure that the town and the immediate area can not only meet that but probably beat it this year,” he says.

To help with that goal, this year there are more boxes being placed in public places. The boxes began going out last Thursday. One went to Horace Allen School, where Shael goes to kindergarten.

Shael is still pretty involved in the program, Mike says. Shael talked with various businesses and helped make the boxes and posters.

While the donations are going only to people in the immediate area, the possibility exists of expanding the program beyond the Pass. Other municipalities have shown interest.

“I thought that was quite encouraging to hear,” Mike says.

Ten great benefits of local shopping

By Jessica Atkinson With the holiday season upon us for another year, I am writing to remind people to support local businesses and “shop local.” It’s not uncommon to hear, “Oh, there’s no selection here” and “Prices are better in the city,” but I think people write it off before checking out their options.

Here are 10 great reasons to shop local this holiday season: 1. You will save money by shopping local.

A day out of the Pass can be fun for a change of scenery, but when you look at what you put in your gas tank, the cost of lunch (and maybe even dinner) out, plus any purchases made en route, like stopping for coffee, snacks or a bottle of water, are you really saving anything at the end of the day?

2. You save time! If you are like me, you value your free time. Hours spent driving to and from your city of choice are time you could have spent doing a million other things. If you could get those three or five hours of travel time back, what would you do with them? Write some Christmas cards? Read a good book? Take your kids or yourself out to the ski hill?

3. Reduce your carbon footprint! Not only can you burn less gas, but you can shop from

local producers such as the coffee roaster, a potter making mugs or dish ware, honey from Burmis or handmade soap – all wonderful gifts.

4. Shopping local spurs on your local economy, which has a fantastic way of trickling down!

You spend $200 at a store which means they have a better ring-out for that day. They may, in turn, buy themselves a nice bottle of wine, go out for supper or buy their kid a ski pass. The liquor store, restaurant or ski hill benefits and they have you to thank for it!

5. Shopping local shows appreciation to the businesses that support local organizations throughout the year; for instance, providing a gift basket or other door prize to the Hillcrest Fish and Game trophy night, flipping pancakes or burgers for a Boys and Girls Club fundraiser, or donating something for a silent auction benefiting the art gallery and museum. Small businesses enter decorated floats in our summer parades and the owners of small businesses sit on committees and coach hockey and teach swim lessons.

6. Shopping local ensures staff at small businesses get work hours. If things are quiet, staff can get sent home early and it starts to show on their paycheques.

7. Shopping local puts money in the pockets

of your friends, relatives and next-door neighbours – look at who is standing behind the counter next time you enter a store!

8. The convenience of shopping local can also mean a return or exchange takes minutes instead of waiting until your next trip to the city.

9. Don’t knock the “poor selection” until you’ve checked it out for yourself! There may be some empty storefronts, but we still have an astonishing array of service and retail choices as well as some home-based businesses that have some truly unique items. Most service or retail locations, if not every one, has a gift certificate option as well. Even the art gallery and museum have wonderfully-curated gift shops. Have you checked them out?

10. According to a recent BMO holiday outlook, Canadians are expected to spend, on average, $674 this holiday season. If only half of Crowsnest Pass residents over 18 spent this amount, and spent it out of town, that amounts to $1,587,270! Imagine how our community could benefit from a million and a half dollars spent here between now and Dec. 25!

I urge you to think of how much good shopping local can do for Crowsnest Pass, not just at holiday time, but all year-round.

Christmas shopping extravaganzas Crowsnest Christmas

By Brad Quarin Crowsnest Pass residents need not fear being left out in the cold for Christmas celebrations and Moonlight Madness this year.

Crowsnest Christmas is scheduled for this Thursday to Saturday, giving local citizens a chance to show their community spirit and enjoy a bonfire at Gazebo Park, visits from Santa Claus and carolling by the Catholic choir. Free hot chocolate will be available on Main Street while the Garage Sale Store in Blairmore offers free hot dogs.

You can tune in to Mountain Radio to learn how you could win a turkey, or enter draws for prizes such as gift certificates from certain local businesses. As well, you can get started on Christmas shopping late into the night with Moonlight Madness and various promotions offered by stores.

Moonlight Madness This Friday, it will be time again for everyone to come out and enjoy Pincher Creek’s annual parade of lights and Moonlight Madness shopping event.

Residents can get into the holiday spirit and take in a variety of entertainment while getting a good start on Christmas shopping. The events will take place downtown and at Ranchland Mall.

Lieve Parisis, administrator of Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce, says local businesses are decorating floats with Christmas lights for the popular parade along Main Street, which starts at 6:30 p.m. Free hot chocolate will be provided at Cenotaph Park during the parade.

To help get everyone into the Christmas spirit, Marilyn and Lloyd Hansen will perform Christmas music at Ranchland Mall following the parade, around 7 p.m.

Many Pincher Creek stores will stay open as late as 10 p.m., offering special bargains for Christmas shoppers. The whole night will promote local business, Lieve says.

Also among the day’s events, Fox Theatre will be screening a film for free at 3 p.m. The pool will offer free swimming for an hour starting at 5 p.m., and kids can make a Christmas craft at Wind Fun & More Gift Store at the Ranchland Mall from 7 to 9 p.m.

Sinister 7 shines

Christmas Shopping Guide in the Breeze Dec. 5!

They may not have won, but organizers of the Sinister 7 marathon in Crowsnest Pass were glad to be finalists in the Alto Awards, honouring excellence in Alberta tourism. They are also interested in taking another shot at an Alto next year.

“I certainly felt it was important representing the Crowsnest Pass,” says director Andrew Fairhurst, who organizes the race with Brian Gallant.

“We’re happy that we were there, but I think that this brings some good exposure to the Crowsnest Pass,” Brian adds. “We have a lot to offer down here.”

Sinister 7 is an annual event going into its sixth year. It will follow the “same basic route” as previous years, Brian says, with only minor adjustments to the program based on feedback from past races.

“Our seventh year, we have some big plans for that,” Brian says, including some “restructuring of the course.”

At the Alto Awards, Sinister 7 was nominated for promoting sustainable tourism. Brian explains that this category considers environmental, cultural and economic factors. “We pride ourselves on having a very low impact on the environment,” he says. The marathon sets rules of conduct for participants. As well, the race must work well with the town’s government and people and must raise money.

The organizers of Sinister 7 submitted their entry at the end of September, barely meeting the deadline, and a panel then selected Sinister 7 as one of three finalists. In their application, the organizers made references to how they felt Sinister 7 met the criteria for the sustainable tourism award. “Next year, that’s one thing I would do differently – I would include more documentation,” Brian says.

Brian, Andrew and their wives attended the awards gala and dinner last month at Banff, where presentations were made by Tourism Minister Christine Cusanelli. Andrew says it was “quite the gala,” and Brian says it was “really fun.”

Coming together for fire victims

By Brad Quarin When disaster struck an elderly couple in Coleman, the Women’s Resource and Crisis Centre was there to help. The couple’s house burned down early one morning at the end of October and the woman had to go to the hospital.

“They lost everything,” says centre co-ordinator Desiree Simoneau. “That’s a crisis to us.”

The man who lived in the burned house has since moved into a rental home, Desiree says. She is unsure if the couple had insurance, but says even if they did it would take weeks for them to receive any money.

The women’s centre came forward the day after the fire to replace items such as pots, pans and lamps. As well, they put the news out on Facebook and asked the community for help. “I posted that,

and within two minutes my phone was ringing off the hook,” Desiree says. “Nothing gets the word out as fast as social media.”

People came forward to donate various items, including a TV, a bed, dressers, tables and chairs.

The food bank donated a $50 Sobeys card and worked with the women’s centre to collect household cleaners and toiletries.

Desiree asks those wishing to donate to call the centre at 403-562-8000, noting there’s no space there to store furniture that people might want to give.

Desiree feels the fundraising efforts have been a success. “It’s phenomenal. The community support’s been amazing, especially with this situation,” she says. “This community’s really great with that.

If somebody needs help they help, if they can.”

The trio have teamed up as Rumors Salon and Spa, and are excited to share their expertise with both new and established clients.

The ladies hope you’ll take some time to drop in Friday night during Moonlight Madness, as they celebrate their grand opening.

From 6 to 9 p.m., Rumors is offering free eyebrow waxing, men’s haircuts for $15, free girls’ and ladies’ styling and 25 per cent off on all products.

Rumors has something for everyone during their grand opening, and in their everyday operations.

Brooke has been running Creekside Rejuvenation for five years and provides pedicures, manicures, gel nails, waxing and laser hairremoval services.

Vanessa offers hairstyling for women, men and children along with colours and special-occasion styles.

Carla offers the same hairstyling services along with eyelash extensions.

Between them, Vanessa feels they cover all aspects a salon and spa should offer.

The three women have worked together previously, and are pumped to be moving forward as a team.

“An awesome opportunity has come along for us,” Vanessa says. “I feel like I’m very young to be starting a business, and it’s overwhelming, but it’s very exciting!”

The three partners are all local gals who have been working in the industry in Pincher Creek for two to five years.

“I love making people feel beautiful,” Vanessa says. “The main thing that makes us feel successful is seeing people happy when they leave. It’s a great way to make a living.”

Regular hours for the salon are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Thursday evenings the shop is open until 9 p.m., and Saturday bookings are accepted by appointment only.

Huge horns!

Elk Valley visitors can now get a close-up view of a Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep ram that lived for almost 12 years at Teck’s Greenhills operations in Elkford, growing horns that ranked among the largest in the world.

Fernie Chamber of Commerce has the mounted ram head on display at its nature centre on Highway 3, which presents the history and resources of the Elk Valley to visitors and local school groups.

The ram was well known to workers and visitors at Greenhills because of its size.

In March 2011, the conservation service received several reports that the ram was dead on the property.

When local conservation officers investigated, they found the sheep was still alive, but severely emaciated and underweight by 75 pounds or more. After consulting with regional wildlife biologists it was clear the ram was starving to death and should be euthanized to prevent further suffering.

The ram was necropsied to find out what caused its degraded health and to check for disease or infections that could compromise the health of other animals.

Matthew Halton students remember

Students of Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek got involved in a Remembrance Day ceremony last Wednesday, honouring veterans in an event open to the public.

Amy Bonertz, vice-president of the student council, says it was “a great thing” to see students participating and wearing poppies. She feels students understand and appreciate the veterans’ sacrifices, especially around Remembrance Day, and particularly if they have veterans in the family. Two of her own late relatives served in the Second World War. In preparation for Remembrance Day, students helped research veterans’ history and acquired small gifts for them, and several individual students

took part in the ceremony.

The girls who were asked to sing were “absolutely amazing,” Amy says. Alexis Breckenridge performed “Travelling Soldier” by the Dixie Chicks and Alyssa Barbero sang “Just Breathe” by Pearl Jam. Amy was looking forward to “pretty much everything” about the ceremony, but especially to the video produced by Mr. Petluk’s drama class.

It consisted of interviews with students and staff regarding how they observe Remembrance Day. The answers included going to ceremonies, wearing a poppy with a Canadian flag pin in the middle, writing poetry and watching the History Channel. she wrote last year entitled “Living Remembrance.” In it, she talked of how veterans fought against oppression, danger and hunger, problems that still plague the world.

“Our remembrance should not end here,” Lisa read. “These ceremonies should serve as catalysts, sparking desire to continue the fight.... Their great deeds should inspire great passion in our hearts.”

“True remembrance lies in the everyday action of peace,” she told the audience.

Const. Robert Wright spoke near the end of the ceremony, saying he believes the students understand the holiday.

“Inventing Elsa Maxwell: How an Irrepressible Nobody Conquered High Society, Hollywood, the Press and the World”

Think J. Edgar Hoover in drag, and you get the idea.

Born in 1881 in Keokuk, Iowa, as a girl she moved with her family to San Francisco. One day while looking out the front window of her home, she saw something that would literally redefine her life. Neighbors were preparing an elaborate wedding, an event her parents were not invited to attend. As Elsa watched the activity, she vowed that someday she would host the most extraordinary parties in the world, inviting whom she pleased, regardless of their wealth and stature -- and that is exactly what she did.

When the facts of her life didn’t measure up, she chose narratives that

did. Elsa often claimed that she had been born in a box at the Keokuk Opera House during a performance of “Mignon,” but in truth she entered the world in a bedroom at the home of her maternal grandparents. Even the year of her birth is confusing, since early in her life she shaved two years off her age.

Elsa was an ambitious, talented woman. She found work as a singer, actress, author, gossip columnist and songwriter, but it was her talent as a professional hostess for royalty and high society where she established an international reputation. She thought outside the box and devised outrageous themes for her parties. In addition to inventing the scavenger hunt, she sometimes required men to dress as women for her events, and vice versa.

Author Sam Staggs documents the unlikely story of a woman who professed that her fame was “not bad for a short, fat homely piano player from Keokuk, Iowa, with no money or background, who decided to become a legend, and did just that.”

By Steve Becker HEADS I WIN, TAILS YOU LOSE It goes without saying that a declarer should avoid making plays that can lose but never gain. Conversely, declarer should always be on the lookout for plays that can gain but cannot lose. This principle is surely not debatable, but its application in a given situation is not always easy to spot.

Consider this deal where South was in four hearts. West led the K-A of clubs and continued with the jack.

Declarer ruffed and led a trump to the ace, discovering to his horror that West had all five missing trumps.

South did the best he could by abandoning further trump leads and playing diamonds instead. But West ruffed the second diamond and returned a trump, and South later lost a spade trick to go down one.

It is true that when five cards of a suit are missing, they will divide 5-0

only 4 percent of the time. So to that extent, South was unlucky. Nevertheless, the fact remains that he made an error in the play, and the gods saw fit to punish him for it.

Had South been a member of the school that always asks at the start of play “What can defeat me?� he might have found the way to safeguard his contract. He would have realized, when West continued clubs at trick three, that only a 5-0 trump break could defeat him. Then, in order to protect against this possibility, he would have discarded his seven of spades on the jack of clubs in order to maintain control of the trumps.

A: Beginning Thursday, Jan. 10, at 9:30/8:30c, Bill does a 180 from his “Innocent” role to star as the president of the United States in the NBC comedy “1600 Penn.” The series was co-created by Jason Winder, director for “Modern Family,” so I can only hope that some of that comic genius carries over to this new series.

And Bill is no stranger to being the POTUS (see: “Independence Day”), nor is he averse to being funny. Rookwood Pottery Q: My grandmother in Texas collected pottery throughout the 1940s and ‘50s. One of her favorite pieces features the image of an Indian and was made by Rookwood. She had it appraised in 1960 and was told it was painted by Matthew A. Daly in about 1900. The value at that time was $250. Even though I love the piece, I certainly would sell it if it is valuable.

outlaw older brother, Jessica Chastain is a strong woman drawn to the wrong men, Gary Oldman is the infamous Floyd Banner, and Guy Pearce is the chilling federal investigator come to shut the brothers down. The film has a healthy dose of violence, matching pound for pound what it has in acting talent.

Agent J (Will Smith) loses track of his partner, tightlipped Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones.)

The Men In Black HQ says K has been dead for more than 40 years. Agent J has to travel back in time and team up with the young K (Josh Brolin) to stop an alien assassin.

Don’t worry, it’s better than MiB 2.

Brolin’s performance as a 29-year-old Tommy Lee Jones (Brolin is in his 40s) is the highlight of the movie. The villain, Boris the Animal, is played by comedian Jemaine Clement, who dons a perfectly over-the-top persona instead of his usual dry humor. It may not recapture the magic of the original, but this “threequel” is worth a watch.

“ParaNorman” (PG) -- Norman is an outsider with a bully problem and a supernatural gift. When zombies and ghosts terrorize his tiny town, the hapsave

less citizens can turn to only one person, Norman, the weird little kid who says he speaks with the dead. With the help of his only friend, his annoying sister, a brain-dead jock and the local bully, Norman has to fight a witch’s curse to save the town.

It’s a lot of fun and a lot spookier than you would expect. It’s all done in 3D stop-motion animation by the same company that made the creepy “Coraline.” Adults as well as young’uns will be plenty entertained, provided everyone is at least 7 years old and can handle a scary and emotionally weighty finale.

“Step Up Revolution” (PG-13) -The greedy corporatists are about to bulldoze a beloved working-class neighborhood, and only a diverse team of young dancers can save the community center, with their dancing. It’s a plot as old and predictable as “war veteran loses his family, then kills all the bad guys,” floated along only by its action thrills (or in “Step Up’s” case, dance numbers). The dancing is fine and flashy, but it’s not worth the soulless exchanges in between that pass for “drama.”

Add Taste of India to Roasted Potatoes I enjoy tossing a variety of spices in family meals, but I clearly hadn’t used mustard seeds in a while -- make that a long while. While cleaning out my spice drawer, I discovered a dented can wedged in back with a 1985 expiration date stamped on the bottom. It might be a good year for a fine wine, but mustard seeds?

The experience had a positive outcome. I dashed off to my neighborhood naturalfoods store to pick up fresh spices in bulk (in small quantities) for fall and holiday cooking. While there, I was inspired to take in that evening’s cooking class, “Global Flavor Gone Local,” with chef Kate Moore.

Full of tips and tricks, Kate encouraged us to be spontaneous when cooking at home. With a well-stocked pantry of spices, it’s easy to change the flavor profile of a dish. Like Italian? Use basil, parsley and garlic. Latin? Try cumin, coriander and chipotle. “With a willingness to experiment, kitchen miracles can happen,” she said.

Here’s my own take on Kate’s techniques for preparing Indian-flavored roasted potatoes. My family always clamors for more of these spiced up spuds when served as a side with roasted chicken, pork or grilled fish.

Indian-Spiced Roasted Potatoes 6 medium, red or white skin potatoes 2 tablespoons minced garlic 1 tablespoon grated or minced fresh ginger 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon mustard seeds 1 teaspoon coriander seeds 1 teaspoon cumin seeds Salt to taste 1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. 2. Scrub, dry and cut the potatoes into eighths and place in a bowl.

3. Heat a saute pan with olive oil over medium heat and toss in a “tester” pinch of ginger. When the ginger starts to sizzle, toss in the remaining ginger, the garlic and whole spices. Cook until fragrant and spices are lightly toasted, about 1-2 minutes.

4. Spoon the Indian-flavored oil and ingredients into the bowl of potatoes.

Add salt and toss until all sides of the potatoes are well-coated.

5. Spoon potatoes on a baking sheet and

spread out onto one layer. Roast for 30 minutes, or until tender. Flip once to ensure even cooking.

Trigger Finger Not a Cowboy Disorder DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Three or four months ago, the ring finger on my right hand started making popping noises when I bent it. Now it’s still doing that, and it catches in a bent position from time to time. I work as a carpenter, and I can’t afford to take time off. What do you think this is? -- R.B. ANSWER: My guess is trigger finger.

The tendons that bend the fingers travel from the forearm into the palm and then onto each finger and the thumb. On their way to the fingers, a sheath of tough tissue encircles them.

Repetitive movements of the fingers irritate the protective tendon sheaths, and they swell. The swelling squeezes the tendon, and the popping noise you hear is the tendon freeing itself from its swollen sheath. That snapping noise sounds like the noise heard when cocking a gun’s trigger.

As time goes by, the finger might become locked for some time in the bent position.

You don’t want to hear this, but rest is essential to permit the tendon to move smoothly. If you must work, padded gloves afford some protection for the finger. Gripping a tool like a hammer is particularly hard on the tendon and its sheath. Tools with a larger-than-normal handle are less of a problem. The best protection is wearing a metal splint so that the finger can’t move.

Your doctor can give you a cortisone injection into the problem area, and that often reduces the swelling quickly. You must rest your finger after the injection for at least three days.

If two injections fail to free the finger, then you need to consult an orthopedic surgeon for an opinion on surgical release of the tendon. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: This past summer, I got the shock of my life at a family get-together. My cousin, whom I hadn’t seen in 10 years, has bulging eyes. Her mother -- my aunt -- told me it was due to a thyroid problem. I’d never heard of a thyroid problem affecting the eyes. Does it?

-- G.D. ANSWER: It can. An overactive thyroid gland can lead to deposits of material in the eye sockets, which causes the eyes to protrude. There are treatments for this complication of hyperthyroidism. I’m sure this cousin is under the care of a thyroid specialist and an ophthalmologist.

6 carrots, peeled 3 stalks celery Roasted turkey carcass, finely chopped 2 cups cooked turkey meat, finely chopped 2 medium onions, each cut into quarters 5 sprigs parsley 1 clove garlic, peeled 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme 1/2 bay leaf 6 quarts water 1 1/4 teaspoons salt 1 cup regular long-grain rice, cooked as label directs 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1. Cut 2 carrots and 1 stalk celery into 2-inch pieces. In 12-quart stockpot, combine turkey carcass, carrot and celery pieces, onions, parsley sprigs, garlic, thyme, bay leaf and 6 quarts water, or enough to cover; heat to boiling over high heat. Skim foam from surface. Reduce heat and simmer, skimming occasionally, 4 hours.

2. Strain broth through colander set over large bowl; discard solids. Strain again through sieve into several containers; cool.

Cover and refrigerate overnight.

3. Remove and discard fat from surface; measure broth and pour into 5-quart saucepot. If necessary, boil broth over high heat until reduced to 10 cups to concentrate flavor.

4. Cut remaining 4 carrots and remain-

ing 2 stalks celery into 1/2-inch pieces; add to broth with salt. Heat soup to boiling.

Reduce heat and simmer until vegetables are tender, about 15 minutes. Stir in cooked rice and turkey; heat through, about 5 minutes.

Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice.

Makes about 13 cups or 12 first-course servings.

French Onion Soup Onions, slowly cooked until deep-brown and caramelized, give this classic its distinctive flavor. Great for a party, this recipe is easily doubled; simply cook the onions in two skillets.

4 tablespoons butter or margarine 6 medium onions, thinly sliced 1/4 teaspoon salt 4 cups water 1 can (14 1/2 ounces) beef broth (1 3/4 cups brown beef stock may be substituted) 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme 4 slices (1/2-inch thick) diagonal French bread 4 ounces Gruyere or Swiss cheese, shredded (1 cup)

1. In nonstick 12-inch skillet, melt butter over medium-low heat. Add onions and salt and cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are very tender and begin to caramelize, about 45 minutes. Reduce heat to low and cook, stirring frequently, until onions are deep golden brown, about 15 minutes longer.

2. Transfer onions to 5-quart Dutch oven.

Add 1/2 cup water to same skillet and heat to boiling, stirring until browned bits are loosened from bottom of skillet. Add to onions in Dutch oven. Add remaining 3 1/2 cups water, broth and thyme to onions and heat to boiling over high heat. Reduce heat and simmer 30 minutes.

3. Preheat oven to 450 F. Arrange bread slices on cookie sheet and bake until lightly toasted, about 5 minutes. Place four ovenproof bowls in jelly-roll pan for easier handling.

Spoon soup evenly into bowls and top with toasted bread, slightly pressing bread into soup. Sprinkle Gruyere evenly on top. Bake until cheese has melted and begins to brown, 12 to 15 minutes. Makes about 5 cups, or 4 first-course servings.

Dealing With Damage from Hurricane Sandy Q: After the recent megastorm, we had a lot of debris strikes on our house. The gutter and eaves took a lot of damage, with some of the gutters torn down and the eaves looking ratty. How expensive is this to fix? I don’t have a lot of money. -- Flores C., Taunton, Mass.

A: The gutters themselves should not be too expensive to re-hang, or replace if badly damaged. However, if there is damage to the roof eaves, you need to have a professional check it out and assess just how severely those debris strikes affected the roof.

You also should contact your insurance company to report the damage.

Because the damage occurred as a result of Hurricane Sandy, which struck the

East Coast in late October, your state was under a declared state of emergency.

This means that in addition to state funds to repair and clean up storm damage, some federal funds have likely been allotted. Your state’s emergency management agency (MEMA, in this case) can provide information on how and where to report damage, how to work with your insurance company to get repairs made, and other important advice.

While you’ll need to do your homework to find out what funding is available to cover the repairs (if your insurance provider doesn’t), there are some general guidelines to follow no matter what. Have more than one contractor or roofing company check out the roof, eaves and gutters; have each provide you with a written estimate of the cost, as well as an estimate of how much time it will take to effect the repair. Do not allow work to start until you’ve agreed to the cost and scope of the work and have signed off on the estimate.

If you’re at all uncertain about your ability to negotiate a fair price for the repair job, or to fill out requests for repair assistance or reimbursement, ask a trusted friend or relative

to help you with the process.

HOME TIP: Gutters and eaves are key protective elements of a house, part of the “envelope” that keeps water and pests out. Make repairs as quickly as possible to prevent damage to other parts of your home.

This recipe for Turkey Tortilla Casserole is the perfect way to use up leftovers from a holiday meal. Best of all, it can prepared from start to finish in your slow cooker.

The flavor of the jalapeno, or poblano soup, and the salsa give the cooked turkey a spicy kick and transform the dish into Latin-flavored comfort food. Serve this fabulous dish with a side of tortilla or pita chips to create an after-Thanksgiving tradition that you’ll enjoy for years to come.

TURKEY TORTILLA CASSEROLE You can substitute cooked and cubed chicken, cooked ground beef or cooked ground pork or cooked chorizo. If you don’t have a slow-cooker, place the ingredients in layers as directed in an oven-proof casserole dish and sprinkle with the cheese.

Bake the casserole at 375 degrees F for about 25 minutes, until it is hot and bubbly around the edges.

4 cups chopped cooked turkey 10 ounce can condensed cream of chicken soup

10 ounce can condensed cream of jalapeno, or poblano soup 1 cup mild salsa 1 cup sour cream 2 tablespoons chili powder 1 onion, finely chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 16 corn tortillas, torn into pieces 1 to 2 cups cooked vegetables 1-1/2 cups shredded Pepper Jack, Colby, Cheddar or Cojack cheese 3 cups tortilla chips 1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro 1. Spray inside of the slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray. In large bowl, mix together the soups, salsa, sour cream, chili powder, onion, garlic, salt, black pepper and cayenne.

Add the chopped, cooked turkey to the soup mixture and mix well.

2. Place a layer of the tortillas in the slow cooker, cover the tortillas with a layer of the vegetables and cover the vegetables with a layer of the soup mixture. Repeat layers ending with the soup mixture layer.

3. Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 4 to 5 hours until bubbly.

Sprinkle with cheese; cover and let stand until cheese melts. Serve with

the tortilla chips and top with a few tablespoons of sour cream; sprinkle with the cilantro and serve. Serves 8.

First, pet proof the house. Invest in toddler safety gates (if you don’t already have some) to limit Elwood to parts of the house where he’s less likely to find shoes, toys and other objects. Spend at least 30 minutes every day working with Elwood, in addition to twice-daily walks and generous amounts of playtime.

Chewing behavior is very common in puppies, but tends to diminish as they mature. If he continues to destroy everything in sight, talk to his veterinarian or try a group dogtraining class. Anxiety or other issues can be at the root of long-term chewing problems.

• On Nov. 12, 1864, Union Gen. William T. Sherman orders the business district of Atlanta destroyed before he embarks on his famous March to the Sea through Georgia to prevent the Confederates from recovering anything once the Yankees had abandoned it.

• On Nov. 16, 1901, a low-slung car called the “Torpedo Racer” -- basically a square platform on bicycle wheels -- breaks the world speed record for electric cars in Coney Island, N.Y., by going 1 mile down the straight dirt track in just 63 seconds. That’s about 57 mph.

Today the world speed record for an electric vehicle is about 245 mph.

• On Nov. 14, 1914, in Constantinople, capital of the Ottoman Empire, the religious leader Sheikh-ul-Islam declares an Islamic holy war on behalf of the Ot-

toman government, urging his Muslim followers to take up arms against Britain, France, Russia, Serbia and Montenegro.

• On Nov. 15, 1943, Heinrich Himmler makes public an order that Gypsies are to be put on “the same level as Jews and placed in concentration camps.”

Himmler was determined to prosecute Nazism racial policies, which dictated the elimination of all races deemed “inferior” and “asocial.”

• On Nov. 13, 1953, a member of the Indiana Textbook Commission calls for the removal of references to the book “Robin Hood” from textbooks used by the state’s schools. She claimed that Robin Hood was a communist because he robbed the rich and gave it to the poor.

• On Nov. 17, 1968, the Oakland Raiders

score two touchdowns in nine seconds to beat the New York Jets -- and no one sees it. In a debacle which would become known as “Heidi Bowl,” with just 65 seconds left to play, NBC broke away from the game to air its previously scheduled programming, the movie “Heidi.”

• On Nov. 18, 1987, a fire in a London subway station kills 30 commuters and injures scores of others. At the King’s Cross station in London, people began to smell smoke coming from beneath one of the station’s escalators. It was later revealed that debris and grease had built up under the escalator.
