101 Christmases “I enjoy being 100,” said Crestview Lodge resident Mildred Allred after blowing out the candles on her cake on Monday. Mildred was presented with best wishes from many dignitaries, among them Queen Elizabeth and Mayor Ernie Olsen, who praised her agility. Mildred still walks daily, outside if weather permits. “I never had to work very hard,” she says. “My husband was a good worker and I helped out when needed.” Some of her fondest Christmas memories are skating on the outdoor lake with a bonfire nearby and the eagerly-anticipated annual candy bags received by her family of eight siblings.

My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin For hours now, I’ve been struggling to untangle my thoughts and write. Filling this little bit of space is a process that’s always ongoing, and is usually an easy task.

I don’t deliberately plan what to write about – the topic generally evolves and is tweaked in my head as the week passes. Most of the time, only one thing is front and centre in my mind, but occasionally several ideas bump and collide, vying to be the one that makes it to print.

Last week I was focused – the thoughts I planned to share about Christmas were organized and clear.

I was full of Christmas cheer, starting to make plans for our holiday trip to Saskatchewan.

I’ve been involved with some wonderful projects lately, and that positive energy has easily transferred into other parts of my life.

My worries were few. Who would watch the cats while we’re away? Did I have enough creative juice to design a truckload of Christmas ads? Why was there a huge crack in my windshield? When would I have time to do my Christmas shopping?

For the most part it was pretty mundane.

My biggest worries at this time of year revolve around scheduling and working out how we can all spend enough time with our family and friends during the short visit back home.

I’m finding the older I get, the less flexible I’m becoming. It’s true both physically and mentally.

I easily get caught in nostalgia, and basically like things to go my way with minimal change. I’ve always spent Christmas Day at my parents’ home, and honestly can’t imagine it any other way.

Of course, things got complicated once I married and became part of a larger family. That’s when the Christmas Day touring began. I don’t think I’ve started and finished the day in the same community for more than 15 years. My daughter thinks this is normal – it’s been this way all her life.

The other day I found myself wondering how things will be down the road, when I step up from mom to grandma, and have to share with another family. This led to wondering how I’ll cope when

the first Christmas comes along with someone missing from the dinner table.

I know from personal experience that we miss loved ones who’ve passed on just a little bit more at Christmastime, especially if their death coincided with the season.

I chose not to dwell on the negative, gave my kid a hug and carried on with the day.

The next morning there was media frenzy over the tragedy in Newtown, Conn. I was compelled to listen. There were conflicting reports, as news outlets tried to scoop one another. There was considerable sensationalism, rallying and an enormous amount of outrage, as social media buzzed furiously around the world.

Finally I stopped listening, but my heart didn’t stop aching. I felt it even more deeply the following evening as photographs of the victims – beautiful children and women – dominated my TV and computer screens.

A huge lump formed in my throat as I heard the story of Victoria Soto, the young teacher who made the ultimate sacrifice for her children – her students. I can’t fathom how, or why, such terrible things happen, but we can all be proud of the heroes.

I found myself reflecting again on how important family traditions are, and how devastating Christmas will be for 27 families this year, and forever after. It’s been four days, and I haven’t been able to turn off the empathy. It’s embarrassing to think of the “big” problems I had a few short days ago.

I will find someone to look after the cats, this is the last bit of writing before the paper goes to press, my windshield will get replaced, and my husband has offered to help with the shopping. Most importantly, I will get home for Christmas and every chair will be full.

For us, life will carry on.

For the families of Newtown, nothing will ever be the same. I hope you will keep them in your thoughts, hearts and prayers and hold your own family a little closer this holiday season.

Taking shopping in a fun direction

By Brad Quarin The Compass Centre in Blairmore held its Christmas bazaar on Saturday, an event marked

by Christmas baking, music and children buying gifts for their parents.

Amy Easterbrook, wife of the pastor, organized the event, and describes it as “incredibly well received.” She estimates at least 100 people attended. The gifts children could buy were priced from five cents to $2.

The Compass Centre is an evangelical Christian church. It holds worship on Saturday nights and also tries to take part in community activities, “to meet the needs of a different demographic in the community,” Amy says.

Cheer for all

Pincher Creek has a food bank that is busy year-round. Staff at the food bank, located in the Napi Friendship Centre at 622 Charlotte St., will create about 100 Christmas hampers this year.

They are working as hard as Santa’s elves to get all the hampers delivered by Dec. 21, when they close for the holidays until Jan. 2.

Donations are accepted Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 4 p.m.

Employee Trudy Crow Eagle says the food bank is always in need of donations, whether in the form of cash or non-perishable food.

“What we need most is things to make dinners,” she said, pointing out areas in the sorting facility that were close to bare. Kraft Dinner, pasta, canned tomatoes and spaghetti sauces are in high demand.

Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village ran a Christmas decoration round-up from midNovember to Dec. 10. President Colleen Cyr spearheaded the initiative to bring a bit of Christmas cheer to everyone’s season. “If you can’t afford your dinner, you probably can’t afford Christmas decorations, either,” she says.

“I hope it goes to some families that appreciate it, and they enjoy them.”

Henrietta Yellow Horn from the food bank was happy to receive six flats of canned food, plus two boxes of assorted, non-perishable food and Christmas decorations that will go to 70 homes in the area. The decorations were all tested, sorted and bagged by staff and volunteers at Kootenai Brown.

“This means a lot, it’s going to help a lot of people,” Henrietta says. “It’s going to help fill the Christmas hampers.”

“As people come in, I ask if they need their hamper,” she says, and some have already gone out. Staff and volunteers will also be delivering to people in the area.

It does not take much to go from a comfortable position to needing a hand up to get through life. Losing a job, a family break up and illness are among the factors that can send finances into a tailspin. The people at the Pincher Creek Food Bank are doing what they can to help alleviate some of those pressures.

Pincher Planters have spirit

The volunteers known as the Pincher Planters were this year’s recipients of the Spirit of Pincher Creek Award, given by Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce.

Since 1997, the group has been known to plant and keep flower beds, trees and shrubs and to hang flower baskets on Main Street to beautify the town.

Officially, Pincher Planters has about 20 members, says founding member Noreen Robbins.

However, usually a core group of five to seven people show up to work, and organizer Sandra Schwanke says the median age is about 70.

“I’m very proud of these women because they work ever so hard, but it’s nearly all grey power,” says president John Hancock. The group encourages young people to take part.

The award is another reason to be proud. “It’s because the community recognized what we’re doing,” John says.

“They always have, and we’ve had really good support, but this is a physical recognition,” Noreen adds. “I think it’s very special.”

It was also unexpected, because the Pincher Planters felt other nominees were worthy. Noreen says she was “flabbergasted” by the win.

But maybe it shouldn’t have been so surprising, given the visibility of their work. “It makes the community look like it’s cared for,” Noreen says.

It actually takes a lot of work to achieve that look. John estimates the group puts in 700 hours of work per year, and Noreen notes the summer is their busy season. Usually, the planting needs to be done in a bent-over position. “One lady said Pincher Planters’ motto should be ‘heads down, butts up,’” Noreen says.

Fortunately, not all of the work needed to improve the town’s appearance has to be done by the Pincher Planters. The group’s efforts encourage others in the community to improve their own yards, says vice-president Rosaleen Berger.

The seeds for the group were first planted when a “community pride meeting” was called for in June 1996. Back then, the town had no flower beds. Eighteen women showed up at the meeting and seven wanted to start a flower bed, Noreen recounts.

Now the town has 24 flower beds and 47 hanging baskets, the group says.

The Pincher Planters previously received recognition in the national Communities in Bloom contest. One judge commented that Pincher Creek wouldn’t have achieved much in the competition without the group.

Still, the $5,500 budget from the town does not cover all of Pincher Planters’ expenses, Noreen says. This means the group must look to the people, including the Legion and service clubs, for donations.

Topping up the Trees of Hope As predictable as a visit from Santa, the good folks at Pincher Creek Credit Union can always be counted upon to show their support for the Trees of Hope campaign. Steve Barfuss and Maggie Olson, trustees with Windy Slopes Health Foundation, recently stopped by with goodies and accepted a donation of $3,500 from Credit Union manager Vicki French and her staff.

“The Credit Union are awesome community supporters, giving every year like they do,” says Maggie. “What’s fun and special in 2012 is they helped us break the $12,000 mark in donations.”

Pincher Creek Credit Union has donated $3,500 to the Trees of Hope every Christmas for the past five years, bringing their total contribution to $17,500 since 2008.

Funds have been earmarked this year for enhancements to the emergency department at Pincher Creek Health Centre.

“The renovations that are planned will provide greater privacy for emergency patients and their families, and will make the work area safer for everyone,” Maggie says.

The campaign continues through the holiday season, with donations accepted at Pincher Creek Health Centre. You can also give by downloading the Trees of Hope flyer at www.wshealth.ca . The new display created by Boulder Industries staff will be lit each night throughout the holiday season.

Donors may give in memory of a loved one, or as a holiday greeting to all. Wishes are written on special decorations and added to the tree on display in thAe foyer at the health centre.

“It’s just amazing and really gratifying how donations are pouring in,” Maggie says. “I can’t wait to see where the total ends up this year.”

Two weeks ago we held our potluck lunch and Christmas social. Carol Van Gilder and Barbara Johnston had prepared the tables and serving area for the 20 people who brought food and gifts for a sumptuous meal and a fun afternoon. After the gifts were exchanged, in the Chinese way of doing things, some people played cards, some remembered a Christmas without credit cards and some went to Crestview Lodge to wish our old neighbour, Mildred Allred, a happy 100th birthday. It was lovely to sit around, to relax and be at peace. We didn’t “have to” do anything – well, just a few dishes.

We will continue playing whist every Monday and crib every Thursday at 1:30 p.m., and the next bingo will be on Friday, Dec. 28 at 1:30 p.m.

By the time you read this, the December board meeting will have been held and the dates and times of the daily programs in 2013 will be ready, as well as the important date for the annual meeting and election of officers in January. Please think seriously about letting your name stand for a position on the board. There will be openings. New ideas, new perspectives, are the lifeblood of any organization, and we need members to step up to the plate.

Otherwise, it will be difficult to make the programs worthwhile.

Mulling over some of the discussions during the coffee break at the Christmas social, it is hard to visualize what Fred Huddlestun and the like-minded seniors of his day would think of seniors’ lifestyles today. I can remember when I thought the electric typewriter was the eighth wonder of the world. These thoughts demand that seniors press on to decisions we must make for next year and for the future, because our over-thecounter medications promise that we are never going to go over the hill!

At one of the crib games lately, Leny Mace had a perfect score and she didn’t have to share top prize with anybody. She would have liked to weasel out of doing dishes because of her success, but she had to settle on A-plus for drying the coffee cups.

A big thank you to Sobeys for donating the doughnuts we enjoyed after the mid-month bingo. The generosity of the managers and staff of our hometown business sector is truly amazing.

At the bingo game, Vi Mikilak won the the 50/50 draw and Virginia Belcourt won the $20 blackout. Marion McGarva, Ida Bond, Maxine Haug, Mary Simpson, Joyce McFarland and Art Winch shared the other individual games. June Spak called the numbers and Virginia sold the 50/50 tickets. Good work and congratulations to everybody.

Soup and a bun still has a regular spot at noon on the second Tuesday of the month. For December, Carol Van Gilder served homemade chicken noodle soup and light-as-a-feather biscuits to 10 happy diners, resulting in a sizeable contribution to the general funds. When the biscuits were gone, crib boards came out and so rounded out another pleasant afternoon.

Another reminder that the last bingo for 2012 will go ahead for sure on Dec. 28, and we will play whist on Dec. 31 before we don the glad rags to greet the new year. Christmas is special.

Catch the gingerbread man this week

By Brad Quarin This Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be your last chance to visit a historic Blairmore building that has been transformed into a giant Gingerbread Hut for the holiday season.

The log house, built in the late 19th century, was where famous cowboy John Ware’s wife lived, and is now used by Sutton realtors Wendy Valley and Ann Kibala.

“It’s been very pleasant how well received it’s been,” says decorator Suzanne Gonez. “People are curious about the house, it’s obviously an old house, and they love how it’s set up.”

Wendy and her friends Jan Perejma and Suzanne came up with the idea one Friday night at Pure Country, where they often plan things to do, Jan says. Suzanne describes the decorating as a “spur-of-the-moment type of thing.”

Jan adds that Wendy manages fundraising for Crowsnest Can Do, which aims to establish a recreational centre in Crowsnest Pass, and the Gingerbread Hut can help.

Based on the idea that the vertical logs in the house already looked like cinnamon sticks, Wendy’s husband, Rick, helped decorate by cutting up and painting cardboard tubes to make candy canes, Jan says. He also put up the lights and a Styrofoam version of Gingy, the talking gingerbread man from the Shrek movies, Suzanne says.

Always a good bargain hunter, Wendy found plenty of supplies at the Coleman second-hand store Bagatelle, Jan notes, adding that “Wendy is

just very crafty.”

Jan describes how her husband found the Styrofoam for Gingy on the website Kijiji. After they picked it up in Calgary, it flew off the back of the truck on Deerfoot Trail – “stopping traffic for miles,” Suzanne says with a laugh.

When Gingy finally went up, it got a favourable reaction. Before the house was even opened, a little boy was thrilled to see the Shrek character and came to visit, giving the decorators a gingerbread man treat. “That was kind of fun, because he was happy about it,” Jan says.

The Gingerbread Hut features the works of various local artists, including Christmas ornaments, pottery by Penny Rinas and drawings by Nichole Yanta. There is plenty of jewelry for sale, including the popular Burmis tree pendant made

by Laina Kibala, Jan says. Items are being sold on consignment and a portion of the money goes to Crowsnest Can Do. Visitors can also take part in crafts while at the house.

According to Wendy, the house was probably built around 1890 and Mildred Lewis was living there with her family when she met John Ware, a former slave from South Carolina. Ware didn’t live in the house himself, but did visit it. He and Mildred went to Calgary and Ware is remembered for pioneering Alberta ranching. They died in 1905.

The Gingerbread Hut is expected be open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from noon to 5:30 p.m.

Shh! Santa’s elves have been spotted

By Kerri Robins Santa’s elves are everywhere, just when ya need ’em. And busy, busy, busy!

“Obviously it’s no fun being in the hospital at Christmas,” says Jordan Koch, site manager at Pincher Creek Health Centre. “Hopefully our patients will feel the warmth of the season when they see what Santa has brought them Christmas morning.”

Santa has been busy but is getting a little help from his friends.

This is the health centre’s first Christmas stocking-stuffers project, “and community volunteerism has been amazing,” says chief elf Megan deBoer, Alberta Health Services volunteer coordinator for Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek.

“We’ve stuffed 40 stockings for adults and five stockings for kids, and the nurses at Pincher Creek Health Centre will help Santa on Christmas Eve by handing them out to patients,” she says.

While stuffing stockings for hospital patients isn’t a new concept, it plays out a little differently each time and never gets old. The brainchild of nursing staff at Chinook Regional Hospital in

the early 1960s, it was funded by the Friends of Chinook Regional Hospital and the hospital auxiliary.

The volunteer elves in Pincher Creek are a speedy bunch who pulled off this campaign quickly. The first meeting was held in November, and by Dec. 6 the stockings were sewn and stuffed.

“Our local community really stepped up to the plate and pitched in,” says Megan. “We got a kick-start from Windy Slopes Health Foundation with a $500 donation, along with support from McRae Holdings Ltd. and Damberger Trucking.”

As for the volunteers? They were modest about their efforts.

“It was such a small thing for us to do,” says June LaGrandeur, a local volunteer chipping in on the sewing and stuffing. “I think I can speak on behalf of the ladies I volunteered with that it’s our pleasure to do this if it brings even a small smile to someone’s face.”

The stockings were stuffed full of socks, crossword puzzles and pens, lotions, nail kits, tissues, candy and toys and stickers for the kids. And,

thanks to Dr. Bernard Bonertz and Creekside Dental Clinic, patients also received toothbrushes, floss and toothpaste in their stockings.

It’ll be a tough call to see who has more fun Christmas morning – the nurses who get to see those happy smiles, or the patients unpacking their stockings from Santa.

“We’ve already decided we want to do stockings again next year, and we’re adding basket stuffing to the list for Easter,” says Megan, laughing.

Windy Slopes Health Foundation echoed that commitment.

“The community and volunteers really picked up the ball and ran with it,” says Donna Schauerte, the foundation’s chairwoman. “It’s wonderful to see such Christmas spirit and dedication in the community and from so many departments at our hospital. Christmas morning will be a little brighter for our patients.”

Boys and girls deck the halls

Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club lent a helping hand to get the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre decorated for Christmas this year, making some cool ornaments.

The kids created colourful decorations to be attached to plastic cut-out trees, which can be seen at the centre until January.

“I thought it was just nice to do something that hasn’t been done at the centre for some time,” says Myriah Sagrafena, a historical interpreter at the centre. “And they did absolutely wonderful, they exceeded my expectations.”

Myriah came up with the idea with cashier Jenine Trotz.

“We had made a prototype of one of our cut-out trees and thought it would be really nice if we had local kids decorate it,” Myriah says.

The centre approached the Boys and Girls Club to reach a variety of age groups and because the club is always looking for activities.

Myriah heard they were pretty excited about the project.

The children made a number of decorations, including stars, candy canes and bells. To Myriah, the standout was a black and glittered bell shaped like Darth Vader’s head. “A couple

of the others, it was pretty amazing how much glitter they actually managed to get on,” she says.

The decorations were then taken to the interpretive centre, where staff attached them to the trees.

Last Friday, two days after the decorations went up, Myriah met with the kids and the club’s executive program director, Nicole Pearse. At the same time, the club received a donation from Impact Auto, with office manager Koral Lazzarotto handing over a cheque to Nicole. The owner of the automotive repair shop opted to donate $500 to the club and another $500 to the food bank, Koral says.

Staff at the centre are pleased with how the decorating turned out, and initial feedback from the public has also been positive. “A lot of them just said it was nice that we had community involvement, and that they thought some of them were pretty neat,” Myriah says. There weren’t too many visitors during the first two days, but she hopes many more will be able to see the decorations.

The Frank Slide Interpretive Centre is typically open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but will be closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Oh, what a show!

Trickster Theatre Company led a one-week artist-in-residency program at Piikani Nation School in Brocket from Dec. 3 to 7. Students and staff, through daily workshops, lectures, demonstrations and rehearsals, created an original play, based on the theme of relationships to the natural world.

The final performance, entitled Where I Receive a Gift, was presented Dec. 7 for the community. The play was based upon the teachings of the medicine wheel principles, which are found within all human groups: sharing, kindness, humility, trust, honesty and respect. The medicine wheel provides a model for who we all are as individuals. We have an intellectual self, a spiritual self, an emotional self and a physical self. Strength and balance in all quadrants of the medicine wheel can produce a strong and positive sense of well-being and enrich one’s quality of life.

The spiritual life of the Blackfoot people centres upon medicine bundles and their associated rituals. These bundles are taken care of by individuals, and originated from an encounter with a supernatural spirit. These encounters took the form of dreams or visions, which were sought in a typical Plains-type vision quest. A young man, often under the tutelage of an older medicine man, would go out to some lonely place and fast until he had a vision.

Out of reverence for Blackfoot culture and traditions, the playwrights sought the counsel of three Piikani elders – Les Plain Eagle, Louis Smith and Alvin Prairie Chicken. Under their guidance, and supported by Blackfoot language instructors Jeannie Davis and JoAnne Yellow Horn, an original play was crafted.

His love of drama and many talents made Randy Plain Eagle, a returning Grade 12 student, the obvious choice to play the role of seeker. The opening scene had his younger brother, Duke Provost, portraying a more youthful Randy. The dream effect was enhanced with black light style drama which produced an alluring vision of turmoil and angst. This was followed by a mesmerizing performance by the Grade 9 class, in which they fashioned a sweat lodge from bamboo. This set the tone for the vision quest which followed.

The morning nursery class provided the sunrise and sunset scenes, accompanied by some poignant music. The Grade 9 class performed a hypnotic piece, “Dancing in the Dark,” which focused on the struggles one endures when undertaking a vision quest. The Grade 7 class had the daunting feat of setting the stage for the seeker’s return home through movement and song.

Any native gathering would not be complete without an approved amount of humour, and this production met the grade. Along his arduous journey, Randy was attacked by some clever coyotes (Grade 2 class), ravaged by

some nasty, blood-thirsty mosquitoes (Grade 4 class), and enticed with food by a whole township of crafty gophers (Grade 1 class) – all tempting him to give up his quest. The amusing performance by the kindergarten class included asking audience members to play the part of bannock bakers and then horses.

In the end, it was the power of the four gifts of tobacco and pipe, sweet grass, sage and red ochre he received, along with the elders’ guidance and teachings, which allowed the seeker to overcome all of the obstacles he met along the way. The Grade 3 class provided the fire in which the seeker once again met the elders to share the significance of his journey. The entire quest was then played out on the screen in shadows by the Grade 6 class. The play culminated with a celebration and a performance by the Piikani School drum and dance troupe.

First Nation Student Success Plan funding has given us the chance to bring many new programs to assist us in promoting student learning. These have met with success, and we continue to look for new activities to engage our students in the learning process. Education with a holistic perspective is concerned with the development of every person’s intellectual, emotional, social, physical, artistic, creative and spiritual potential. It seeks to engage students in the teaching and learning process, and encourages personal and collective responsibility. The residency provided the school with these unique opportunities. Our request for a theatre residency at the school provided us with further opportunity to actively engage the students and community within the school.

Ultimately, the students were able to learn more about an essential part of the Blackfoot culture.

Trickster Theatre has been an educational touring program in Alberta since 1980. During that time, the company has presented over 1,000 performances and over 600 week-long residency programs in Alberta schools. They have performed at the Toronto, Edmonton and Calgary International Children’s Festivals. The company has also toured internationally to Denmark, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand and Mexico. Piikani School thanks Trickster Theatre and acknowledges the Alberta Foundation for the Arts for the generous grant we received that enabled us to host this art-inresidency program.

We also thank Shell Canada for the funds they provided so that a DVD of the performance could be produced. Every family with children at Piikani School will receive a complimentary DVD of the performance to commemorate the very worthwhile and memorable experience. A special thanks to the staff of First Nation Student Success Plan for your vision and making it possible to initiate this process, and to the parent volunteer coordinator, Lorna North Peigan, and the many parents who helped out in making it a reality.
