My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin We all know people who are exemplary citizens, and volunteers who go well above and beyond all expectations when contributing to their communities and causes.

Once in a while a spotlight shines on local heroes, and those who work the hardest tend to be the most humble in accepting recognition for their efforts.

I think it’s a simple case that people who volunteer don’t do it because they have to, they do it simply because they want to. Personal satisfaction is credit enough for their efforts.

In my short time living in this area, I’ve had the privilege to meet and work with many who give selflessly of themselves for others and the betterment of our communities.

None that I’ve met are keen about tooting their own horns, but when you start listening to what others have to say, some truly wonderful stories come to light.

Volunteerism is alive and well, and many of our friends and neighbours have received special recognition for their good works as recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals.

They are in good company, among 60,000 Canadians honoured in 2012 for their significant contributions and achievements.

Members of Parliament, senators, lieutenantgovernors, commissioners and premiers were government partners in suggesting nominees and choosing recipients.

Nominations also came from non-governmental groups representing Aboriginals, arts and culture, education and environment, health, multiculturalism, education and environment, professional and economic, protective services, social and volunteer, sports, veterans, youth and justice. Members of the general public were invited to make nominations as well.

The idea was to recognize people from a wide

variety of fields through this national honour.

The first presentation was in February 2012, and the award process has been ongoing since then.

At first, I assumed the presentation in Pincher Creek, which included recipients from Crowsnest Pass and Fort Macleod, covered everyone from the area receiving the honour.

It turns out that wasn’t the case.

Many presentations have taken place since, and MP Ted Menzies says he still has one last award to make arrangements for.

Ted had assistance with the nominations and selections and says it was important to him to do the process justice.

“Please forgive me, but I don’t know everybody in the constituency,” he said with a chuckle when we spoke about his role in the process.

The award is prestigious, and Ted acknowledges there are likely many he didn’t hear about who should have received recognition.

As wonderful as it has been for Ted to acknowledge volunteers he is familiar with and knows well, he considers it a privilege to have met so many people who were new to him.

Ted hasn’t been the only one making presentations. Alison Redford has pinned on medals as have other local, provincial and federal dignitaries.

Medal presentations have happened in many locations as well, and to date only one press release has come our way.

This week marks the first of a series of articles saluting local recipients of the Diamond Jubilee Medal. The challenge I’m asking readers to assist me with is to ensure I don’t miss anyone.

The Breeze Mailbox Winter carnival coming next month to C.N.P. Crowsnest Can Do Society is planning a weekend of exciting winter fun, Feb. 22 to 24. The theme of the inaugural festival is History of Pass and Its People.

The weekend will include a night parade, a theme dance with live band and silent auction, and a whole bunch of fun events.

Details on our name-the-carnival contest will be released soon, so put your creative thinking cap on now and maybe you’ll be the one to come up with the best name for this new event.

Community groups and businesses are encouraged to organize and/or sponsor events.

Let’s curl, ladies!

Crowsnest Curling Club has two ladies’ nights out planned this year, Jan. 18 and Feb. 8 at 7 p.m., and we invite women to come enjoy a fun night out.

No curling experience is necessary, and all levels are welcome. You can enter as a individual, with a friend or as a team.

We hosted our inaugural ladies’ Friday night out in November and had 16 people (two sheets, four teams) attend and are hoping to increase it to 24 people (three sheets, six teams) for the upcoming events. These events are planned to expand the number of women curling in Crowsnest Pass, with the goal of establishing regular women’s nights.

Crowsnest Curling Club presently has seniors’ league Monday and Thursday afternoons, men’s league Wednesday nights, mixed league Thursday nights, and junior/family curling Monday nights.

If all citizens were like that ...

Dick Burnham of Pincher Creek received an unexpected early Christmas gift this year.

Unbeknownst to him, Dick’s wife, Lou, had nominated him for the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. As Lou anticipated, the nomination led to official recognition of Dick’s dedication to his community.

On Dec. 21, they drove to Claresholm, where MP Ted Menzies presented Dick with the symbolic medal. Almost the entire family braved the icy roads to show their support for a man who continues to set an example for his family and his community on a regular basis.

“It’s a very lengthy list if you look at all he’s been involved in,” says Ted. “If all citizens were like that, the world would be a better place.”

“Dick has been a great asset for Pincher Creek and for larger organizations like the Legion, Rotary and Elks,” Ted adds.

Dick and Lou are partners in volunteerism and in life, but sometimes Lou does her own thing, like nominating her husband for awards. She is his biggest fan.

The idea to recommend Dick for a Diamond Jubilee Medal came about last fall after attending Evan Berger’s presentation. Lou listened to the merits of the recipients that day and felt Dick was as strong a candidate as any.

Lou had seen ads on TV, and decided to submit Dick’s name. She had to be sneaky though, so all correspondence was sent through their daughter Maggie’s email.

Lou also nominated Dick for the Progressive Conservative Association volunteer of the year for southern Alberta.

To her delight, and Dick’s surprise, he received both awards.

“This is the second time she’s done this to me,” says Dick with a grin while discussing the Diamond Jubilee Medal.

“I look at both awards, not as mine, but as family awards,” Dick says. “I don’t think I’ve missed anything important, but my family has made this all possible.”

Ted is well aware of the Dick and Lou’s team endeavours. “They do almost everything side by side,” he says.

When Dick received the volunteer award at the PC convention, Premier Alison Redford insisted that Lou join them on stage.

Dick may be the one with the commemorative medal pinned to his chest, but Lou and the rest of their family are very much a part of his accomplishments and it’s awesome to see them both recognized.

Dick can’t remember a time when he wasn’t involved in volunteer work, and Lou is quick to mention that he has achieved something significant with everything he’s been involved in.

And Dick has been involved in many things!

The lengthy list includes: volunteer fireman, ambulance driver and EMR for 35 years; chairman of Pincher Creek recreation board for four years and town councillor for a three-year term; Chinook Health Board member; Windy Slopes Health Foundation board member for 10 years; Elks member for 38 years; charter member of Pincher Creek Rotary Club; 38-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion; chamber of commerce member; Citizens on Patrol member; municipal development and subdivision authority board member; and a 12-year member of the Health Advisory Council for Region 12.

Dick has held executive positions in most of the organizations he is and has been involved with. For example, when asked what Legion offices he has held he simply smiles and says, “All of them.”

He donates his time and offers financial support generously to 4-H clubs, minor sports and community groups. He works bingos and casinos for the Legion, Community Hall board, Windy

Dick Burnham’s first opportunity to wear his Diamond Jubilee Medal was a few weeks ago when he was installed as first vice-president of Pincher Creek Legion, Branch 43.

Slopes Health Foundation, Rotary, chamber of commerce, Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village, Pincher Creek and Cowley Lions, and probably a few that Lou forgot to mention!

Dick and Lou owned and operated H&R Block in Pincher Creek for 25 years, and both officially retired last May. Dick says they’re going to take some time to do nothing, but Lou reminds him that the job jar is still full. They look forward to a bit of extra time at home and are enjoying having a little bit more time available to spend with family and friends.

While making time for their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, the Burnham volunteer express will continue to roll.

Thank you, Dick and Lou, for all you do!

The Breeze Mailbox Little Warriors workshop this Saturday With news of child sexual abuse so prevalent, many people are aware of the subject and are seeking more information and training. Crowsnest Pass Parent Link Centre is pleased to host the Little Warriors workshop in Coleman on Friday, Jan. 18, from 1 to 4 p.m. The three-hour workshop will educate adults about how to help prevent, recognize and react to child sexual abuse.

Who should attend this workshop? Everyone who interacts with children – parents, grandparents, caregivers, teachers, coaches, professionals, volunteers. Can you imagine the impact on society if child sexual abuse was prevented before it happened? Adults leave the workshop feeling informed and empowered.

Social dancing classes with Rebecca Dewey resume next month by popular demand: salsa, Feb. 9 and 16; disco, Feb. 23 and March 2; country two-step, March 9 and 16. This time you can take two classes of each dance offered. The first one will teach the basic steps, the second class will build on the first. Our annual Chili Bowl Fest is just around the corner, on Feb. 2, starting at 11 a.m. We already have an amazing amount of people volunteering their tasty chili and cookies and their time to help out with the event. The Pottery Club has been busy making chili bowls, and we are very excited to host this event that the whole community looks forward to. Wildlife series coming to local libraries

If you love nature or just want to learn more about it, you don’t have to let the weather stop you. You can head to your local library for a series of presentations on wildlife and wild places, organized by Heidi Eijgel, an Alberta Parks visitor services specialist.

“It’s really nice to have a lecture series in the winter, where we can see some pretty rare wildlife photos and stay current on wildlife research,” says Heidi. “It’s really exciting to have so many researchers.”

The presentations start at 7 p.m. on Jan. 23 in the Pincher Creek library, but the public can also join in by videoconference from other libraries.

This is the third year of the lectures, which are also supported by the Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council, program co-ordinator Monica Sczyrba-Davis says.

A presentation will be made every Wednesday evening until March 13. That makes eight presentations, up from four last year, and subjects range from wolf populations to spider mating. “We had so many fabulous speakers available who give really interesting presentations about local wildlife and landscapes,” Heidi says.

It is important for people to learn about nature. “A healthy natural ecosystem gives us abundant, clean, fresh water and fresh air,” Heidi says. “People want to know what we are learning about these places and the wildlife.”

Alberta Parks wants to help people appreciate nature, and Heidi says she personally likes hiking and seeing animals and “incredible landscapes.”

“It was always a dream to work in nature,” she says. She has been with Alberta Parks since 1987.

wild places with animals, and that the speakers are high quality.

The first lecturer will be Andrea Morehouse of the Southwest Alberta Grizzly Bear Monitoring Project, which studies the DNA in hair samples left by bears.

Heidi approached Andrea, who co-ordinates the project and presented on it last year, to provide an update this year. This time around, Andrea will bring DNA results.

“It’s always nice to get the information out about the project,” Andrea says.

Andrea invites anyone interested to come, saying it will be a “pretty general presentation” and that knowing more about the bear population will be relevant to landowners and policy-makers. “There’s a lot of community participation in it already,” she says.

Monica is excited for the bear lecture as well as the others. “They all look really good,” she says.

Heidi also looks forward to all the lectures and expects to learn much herself. “To me, they’re all going to be engaging speakers with incredible photographs,” she says. In particular, she looks forward to the presentation on wildlife service dogs by John Clarke of Fish and Wildlife, which will be on Feb. 6.

The Crowsnest Pass and Lethbridge libraries will participate through videoconferencing. “It’s not as good as being there, but it’s a lot better than watching it on TV,” Heidi says. Anyone is welcome to bring their families and questions.

Janice Day of the Pincher Creek library says they have had the videoconferencing system for about four years. It is part of the RISE Network which works with southern Alberta libraries.

“I hope I see lots of people here,” Janice says.

The presentations are free to attend, thanks to the library and the learning council, as well as the speakers who are donating their time and effort, Heidi says. She notes two speakers plan to drive from Edmonton, as they work at the University of Alberta while studying the Pincher Creek area.

The learning council will be promoting the event through its website and Mountain Radio, as well as Facebook and posters. “It’s a wonderful partnership,” Monica says.

The learning council is generally concerned with promoting learning opportunities, and Monica also co-ordinates the Read/Write Literacy Program. Another upcoming event is the Women’s Wellness Fair in April.

Emergency department benefits from Trees of Hope WSHF submission Community response to the Trees of Hope reached $18,500 this year, the highest total yet for the Christmas-themed campaign.

The funds will support enhancements to the emergency department at Pincher Creek Health Centre. The renovations “will provide greater privacy for patients and their families, and that’s very important in what can be a stressful environment,” says site manager Jordan Koch. “It’ll also make the work area even more secure.”

“It’s hard to find the right words to express our gratitude to the people of Pincher Creek and district,” says Donna Schauerte of the Windy Slopes Health Foundation. “Thank you doesn’t begin to cover it. We’re honoured to carry on the legacy.”

Before the foundation existed, the Pincher Creek auxiliary ran the campaign from 1990 to 2004.

A new display created by Boulder Industries staff was lit each night throughout the holiday season. “I think it definitely helped us, it looked great and created lots of awareness,” Donna says.

“The display will be back next year. In fact, it’ll become a permanent part of the Trees of Hope tradition.”

But the foundation won’t be waiting for next Christmas to continue its fundraising efforts.

By Brad Quarin Whether or not you’re Scottish, you’ll have a chance to celebrate Scotland’s heritage on the evening of Jan. 25. Cowley Community Hall will be the scene for this year’s Robbie Burns Day meal honouring the famous Scottish poet.

The event is organized by Margaret Hanna, an animal control officer and piping teacher who brought the celebration back to the Pincher Creek area in recent years.

“It’s important to me because it helps me share our culture and introduce it to people who might wonder what it’s all about,” she says. “It’s a great evening if you love Scottish music and Scottish fare, Scottish foods.”

Margaret was born in Scotland and grew up with the dancing, piping, food and games of the culture, and likes to read Scottish history. She loves the poetry of Robert Burns, who lived in the 18th century and wrote popular pieces such as “Auld Lang Syne.”

Pincher Creek celebrated Robbie Burns Day in the past, but stopped for a while. Margaret revived the tradition to help her piping students experience more of Scottish culture.

She is glad she did this, describing the event as a fun evening, but it’s not easy. “It’s a lot of work to plan and keep the traditions,” she says.

This year in particular has been challenging because some of her regular participants have left Pincher Creek for school. As well, recent beef recalls suggested there might be a problem making haggis, a Robbie Burns Day cornerstone dish.

In spite of these challenges, the event will go forward, this time in Cowley because the caterer is now based there.

The continuation of the meal is fortunate because there is still local interest in it. “I have had quite a few people say to me, ‘Is there going to be one this year?’” Margaret says. In the past, her Robbie Burns Day celebrations have enjoyed “wonderful acceptance.”

Simply Catering will provide the food, including haggis, which Margaret describes as a combination of beef, oatmeal and spices. “And it’s good,” she says. It will come with “bashed neeps,” meaning turnips, and “champit tatties,” meaning mashed potatoes.

There will be alternatives to haggis, like roast beef, salads and cock-a-leekie, which is chicken soup. “I don’t know what the dessert is this year, it’s usually a surprise,” Margaret says.

Cocktails will be served at 6:30 p.m. and the meal begins at 7:30. Tickets are $25.

Philip set to hit the slopes with Team Canada

When the Special Olympics World Winter Games start in Pyeongchang, South Korea on Jan. 29, Philip Mullen of Coleman will be there to represent Canada in downhill skiing.

Philip, 18, has been skiing for nine years with the Special Olympics, a sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities. The games in Korea will mark the first time he’s competed on Team Canada, and he and his family are excited about that achievement.

“We’re just thrilled,” says his proud mother, Sandra Mullen.

She first realized Philip was a skilled skier when he was nine. He skied with the Special Olympics, although it wasn’t competitive at that stage. “Right away, he did very well,” Sandra says.

With competitions over the years he has continued to do well.

Sandra believes Philip has won about 10 medals in larger competitions. “We have a good fill with ribbons,” she adds.

This success allowed him to climb his way to Team Canada. In 2010 he got to the provincials, and last February he made it to the national games. There, he earned a gold medal, a silver and a bronze, which is a rare achievement for someone his age, Sandra says. Of 60 athletes, Philip was one of 13 who ended up on the national team.

Sandra and her husband, Dan, are big supporters of the Special Olympics. “It takes people who can lead very, very lonely lives,” she says. “It gives them an opportunity to meet other people and compete.” Philip says his favourite part of the Special Olympics is “meeting new friends.”

The sport keeps Philip physically fit and emotionally healthier.

“He gets to do something he loves to do,” Sandra says. As well, he gets to see the world.

Not many people with intellectual disabilities get the opportunity to ski or golf, Sandra says, and the Special Olympics provides people to coach them.

Philip has one trainer in Sparwood and one in the Pass, and trains for about eight hours a week in preparation for the South Korean games, his mother says. In Blairmore, he spends time lifting weights in the gym. Philip says “working out a lot” is how he gets ready.

Sandra also notes there will be a team psychologist and a doctor to deal with any stress the skiers may have. However, Philip says he is feeling good about the games.

He’ll be trying to win some medals in South Korea, but to his parents it doesn’t matter if he wins.

Philip hopes to continue skiing into his 20s, and Sandra believes he will probably play on Team Canada again. “I suspect he’ll see more of the world than Korea,” she says.

Happy retirement, Lucille!

The Coleman Legion was quick to show its appreciation to a longtime employee and volunteer upon her retirement. Bartender and manager Lucille Fraser, 70, received a plaque and lifetime membership at the Legion during the installation of officers on Jan. 6.

“That’s a fairly high honour in this organization,” says Debby Greenwood, secretary-treasurer at the Legion. She has worked with Lucille for about 12 or 13 years.

Lucille herself was surprised at the gesture, saying she didn’t think she’d heard of lifetime membership being granted to bartenders. “Couldn’t believe it,” she says.

However, Debby says Lucille is very deserving.

“You don’t get that kind of member or employee very often,” she says. Lynne Hammond, who chairs the house committee, came up with the idea of honouring Lucille and the application was “approved instantly,” Debby explains.

Originally from Princeton, B.C., Lucille came to Crowsnest Pass in 1979 with her husband for his career. She had bartending experience and after she moved she found work at Chris’ Restaurant in Coleman.

In a way, Lucille was drafted into the Coleman Legion. “When I first started, it was crazy,” she says.

In 1981, she had left Chris’ to take the summer months off. Her mother was pushing her to work in the Legion, and while they were visiting it Lucille was called into the office and told she was hired. It

turned out her mother had submitted her application and didn’t tell her about it. “And I’ve been with the Legion ever since,” Lucille says with a chuckle.

She says she stuck with the job because her mother told her to. However, the work was enjoyable. “She liked her job and she liked her customers,” Debby says. “Her heart is just in this Legion.”

Lucille says she came to know the customers well, and made good friends, including with veterans. In fact, her favourite memories of the Legion are serving customers she rarely saw and remembering what they liked to drink. Debby says Lucille would sometimes even drive customers home “out of the kindness of her heart.”

As well, Lucille says some of the girls she worked with are like family. “I kind of miss them.”

In addition to managing the bar, Lucille also organized volunteers at functions, sold poppies and and helped with food for Remembrance Day, Debby points out. The beer sausage, which she helped make, went over particularly well, Lucille recalls.

Upon her retirement, she received a potluck party. The lifetime membership means she won’t have to pay membership dues ever again. Lucille plans to make use of the membership, saying she likes Legion activities like crib. The Legion also offers pool, euchre and darts. In the past, she has twice played against other Alberta Legions. “It’s a lot of fun,” she says.

Servus supports art for kids

The Coleman branch of Servus Credit Union has donated $400 toward an art program for the Boys and Girls Club of Crowsnest Pass.

Funds came from the community investment budget, and branch manager Susanne Moser says Servus is committed to children and youth, education, social services and local initiatives.

The money will be well spent, providing art materials like paper and paint.

One of her proudest accomplishments was starting the first crib tournament in the Legion, which drew 104 people. The tournaments still go on.

Besides playing crib, she plans to travel back to Princeton and also return to her old hobby of oil painting. When she lived in Princeton, Lucille used to paint native children on glass and sell her work, but she hasn’t done this in a while.

With her kids living in Coleman, she will continue to reside here.

Happy new year, with all its plans and hopes and dreams – better get at it!

But first a word of thanks to each and every member who did a little or did a lot to keep the Huddlestun Senior Citizen Centre alive and kicking. Please don’t quit now.

The annual meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m. Please attend to vote and show support to the new executive.

This would also be a good time to renew your membership for the current year. Joe Bruder is counting on your $15 to help balance the budget.

At the last bingo of 2012, Ida Bond won the $25 jackpot as well as a regular game, along with Maxine Haug, Marion McGarva, Helen Nelson, Connie Brown and Joyce McFarland.

Connie also won the 50/50 draw. Leny Mace ran the 50/50, and Barbara Johnston made the coffee and did the dishes. Art Winch called the numbers; he’s pretty honest. Great job, everybody.

Very special thanks to Pincher Creek Co-op for all the donations throughout the year, but they went the extra mile this time with a big tray of tarts and squares as well as chocolates to die for.

Carol Van Gilder, our hostess with the mostest will continue serving soup and a bun for $4 per person. It may be on the first or second Tuesday of the month, but at noon for sure. Carol’s Sunday supper is on hold until we know that at least 20 people are paid up by Jan. 24.

Rae Olds does lots of things that nobody knows or thinks about. She takes time, in particular, to keep abreast of housekeeping supplies as well as the tea and coffee. There is a little book in the kitchen cupboard for listing the basic needs for running the centre. Rae is one smart lady but she is not a mind reader, so if you notice that the beer or something is getting low, write it in the book.

So many people of every age and stage volunteer to make Pincher Creek a great place to live. The positive, give-it-a-try attitude is all around us, and I appreciate Shootin’ the Breeze for fostering that idea. I welcome Tina’s articles from Vista Village – she persuades me that life is a bowl of cherries, pits and all.

Again, get a calendar, come to the annual meeting, make your suggestions, make a commitment and pay your membership.

Share Srecko’s passion for small business

“I enjoy problem solving,” says Srecko Panjovic. Experienced with farming and developing real estate, Srecko provides help to others as a small business consultant at the Rural Alberta Business Centre in Fort Macleod. And he’s coming to Pincher Creek to share what he knows.

Srecko is the first guest speaker in a monthly series being planned by the Pincher Creek economic development committee. The one-hour presentations and discussions will kick off at 4 p.m. on Jan. 24 at the council chambers.

Wendy Kalkan, Pincher Creek’s economic development officer, who is helping to find speakers for the series, welcomes “everybody and anybody who has a general interest in community economic development.” The presentations are also open to businesses, entrepreneurs, the tourism sector, municipal government and members of community agencies in Pincher Creek and neighbouring communities.

“Hopefully they will become more informed, and hopefully they will garner some information or some ideas that will spark further interest or ideas,” she says. The presentations may include tips for running your own business and they will offer the opportunity to network with others in the community.

The plan is for the presentations to take place monthly, except when the economic development committee is on break during the summer and December.

The EDC approached Srecko to learn what services the Rural Alberta Business Centre provides. Fort Macleod’s RABC is the closest one to Pincher Creek.

Srecko has a PowerPoint presentation planned, similar to others he has given. He expects it will take a half hour, to be followed by discussion. He is excited for the opportunity. “I used to be in sales,” he says. “I don’t get stage fright easily.”

Having a passion for small businesses, he worked as a lender at ATB and has been at the RABC for a year now. The RABC offers classes and seminars on Internet marketing, financing and human resource policies, and also refers people to accountants and lawyers.

“I get hands-on with local businesses,” Srecko says. He also has a YouTube channel called Fort Macleod RABC. After Srecko, the next presentation in the series will be given by James Van Leeuwen on broadband networks for rural communities.

“We’re fortunate to have him here,” Wendy says.

Overall, Wendy is looking forward to the series and is confident there will be learning and networking.

The role of the PA will vary depending on the unique needs and dynamics of a club but all duties involve assisting Irene Fraser, Skate Canada certified coach, in the delivery of the program.
