My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin A cowboy walks into a restaurant ...

This may sound like the beginning of a bad joke, but it’s what happened last week in Blairmore, when Joe Guy Brewer and his family rolled into town.

Joe asked Steve and Jessica Atkinson at Stone’s Throw Cafe if he could have two evenings to share his story. It wouldn’t cost them anything, he was just looking to sing some songs and tell his tale of overcoming street life, drug and alcohol addictions and making something of himself.

The house was full on Saturday night, and I found Joe’s story, told primarily through music, to be an interesting one.

He said he’s been chasing “the dream” for 25 years. His dream has transformed with time, and Joe is very fortunate to have the support of his wife, Donna, and their five kids.

While Joe sang and told his tale, his family helped Steve and Jessica out by taking orders, serving, clearing tables, doing dishes and anything else that needed doing.

It was obvious they all knew their parts well, in support of Joe’s dream. The two youngest children joined their dad in song several times. By singing Joe’s lyrics, they were learning his story.

The family lives an unconventional life, travelling from town to town in a motorhome. The kids are homeschooled and appear accustomed to meeting and greeting strangers and helping out.

Maddi was especially captivating as she quietly sang backup behind the microphone. I’d guess she’s about 10, and it appears she loves what she’s doing.

She cruised around the restaurant, visiting patrons with a bright smile on her face.

I’m sure not all days are happy ones, though.

Donna has spent long periods of time on her own with the kids and lives a nomadic life. Despite the challenges, everyone appears to be healthy and happy. This is simply what they do.

Joe is a long rider, and has spent over 11,000 miles alone on horseback. He’s a cowboy – that is his dream.

He’s been many other things, but his heart

always takes him back to his dream. Sharing his story through song and a novel provides the means for his family to travel the world – they’re like modern-day gypsies.

My daughter thinks this would be a cool life to lead. That may be the case, but it certainly isn’t for everyone.

I purchased a copy of Joe’s book, and he promises money back if you don’t find his story inspirational. Some of the twists and turns he described during his performance bordered on the unbelievable, and there was a lot of “and then I …,” but he certainly gave me reason to think. I’m hoping the book will fill in some of the blanks, such as his methodology for breaking horses.

Joe believes every person has a purpose and a gift, and that we’re each responsible for making the most of ourselves. In simple terms, if something’s not working, fix it.

I believe in setting goals and being the best I can be, and I believe that with determination and hard work we all have the potential to be exceptional. The best I can be varies from day to day.

Success is most easily attained when we have others standing with us and supporting our goals.

This point was really brought home as I watched Joe’s family working away that evening in support of his dream.

We’re all capable of making it on our own, but success is sweeter when you have someone to kiss your skinned elbows, give you a swift kick in the butt when you need one and share the satisfaction that comes with achieving a goal.

I’m lucky to have a wonderful support team, and hope they know how appreciative I am. It’s not impossible, but certainly more difficult, to make big things happen on your own.

I also appreciated the reminder that when things aren’t working, it’s up to each of us to consider carefully what our current priorities are and to accept that it’s OK for our priorities to change.

Set goals, challenge yourself, surround yourself with positive people, fix things that aren’t working and make the most of your life journey. Dream your dreams or live your dreams – it’s entirely up to you.

A new year for Silver Reins The new year is here and the Silver Reins 4-H Light Horse Club is ready to start riding and having a good time.

Usually at about 8 to 9 a.m., all the Silver Reins members go out to catch their horses, and load and trailer them into town, to get started on their busy day. When you first walk into the Pincher Creek Pavilion there is a schedule that you follow. On this schedule all the activities are listed that you will be doing throughout the day. The schedule consists of your ride time, when the meeting is, when you do your record books about your horse “project,” and craft and theory time.

The crafts that all the members do are great fun. The crafts we have done in the past ranged all the way from making tack boxes to decorating picture frames made out of horseshoes.

Karen Jarvie, the Silver Reins riding instructor, has been with our club for the past two years and has been a huge help to all the members. She teaches us about ourselves and the horses. Karen can see the smallest details. Half the time you don’t even know you’ve been doing something wrong, but, when you take the advice Karen provides, everything changes and your riding improves, no matter how small the adjustment is!

Then there is theory time, when you learn all about your horse – confirmation, information about tack, what to look for when your horse is sick and lots more.

Record-book time is the part of the day when you record all the expenses of having a horse, the food your horse has been eating, the price to haul your horse to 4-H days or shows, and all your 4-H activities that you have taken part in and their expenses.

Then, at the end of the day, if it’s not too late, some of the groups get to do some fun exercises.

Teens share passion for social justice During the past few weeks, Matthew Halton High School Social Justice, with advisor Ms. Robinson, spearheaded several campaigns to help share the true meaning of Christmas.

As part of the campaign, several boxes of non-perishable food items were collected. These were donated to the Pincher Creek women’s shelter and the local food bank. In addition, with our school’s generosity, about 30 gifts for the shelter’s Angels of Hope program were given.

Social Justice, not forgetting the homeless, organized a collection of backpacks filled with essentials and additional winter clothing items. These were then delivered to the Lethbridge Emergency Shelter and Resource Centre. Social Justice gives many thanks to Matthew Halton student council, who donated $150, and to the staff, who contributed $50 from Livingstone Range School Division.

Also, many thanks to all the other students and staff who participated in sharing the true meaning of Christmas.

During November, Social Justice concentrated on Be the Change, a penny drive for Me to We clean water. With the collection lasting only 30 short days, Social Justice and the school community raised $525 in pennies. This equates to providing 26 individuals with clean, safe drinking water for the rest of their lives! Social Justice extends our sincerest thank you to the entire school community for their generosity. In the new year, Social Justice looks forward to implementing several more programs that will effect positive change.

Community need continues beyond Christmas

By Brad Quarin Christmas has come and gone and local food banks have done well and are still in good shape.

Desiree Simoneau of the Crowsnest Pass Food Bank believes they received enough donations for disadvantaged families to get through a busy time of year. “I am very pleased with how it went,” she says.

Likewise, Pincher Creek Food Bank co-ordinator Henrietta Yellow Horn is proud of how they did. They gave out around 75 or 85 food hampers. “I’m pretty pleased,” she says.

What’s more, there isn’t any shortage of food following the holiday season. “Our shelves are looking pretty good after Christmas,” Desiree says.

However, people should still donate if they can. Henrietta notes that after spending much on Christmas, some families have little left to pay for food.

“It is important to keep contributing to the food bank after Christmas, because the demand doesn’t decrease,” Desiree says.

“There are still people in the community who need this resource and demand [is] four times as high from this time last year.”

Items needed include rice, toilet paper and soap. As well, Henrietta says Pincher Creek sometimes runs out of food required according to Canada’s Food Guide.

Desiree feels Crowsnest Pass is great for giving, and the food bank just has to raise awareness of what is needed.

This Christmas, a lot of the Pincher Creek food came from Canyon School, St. Michael’s School and Matthew Halton High School, Henrietta says. Wal-Mart also contributed about $500 worth of turkeys, while Co-op gave two carts full of food.

A number of regular people also came in with money or bags of groceries, Henrietta says. Sometimes the food bank also accepts clothes.

This year, Henrietta says, the food bank will be moving into a new building purchased by the Napi Friendship Centre. The move means more space and they might even have Thanksgiving meals at the building, which used to be a health food store.

Meanwhile, Desiree says the Crowsnest Pass Food Bank will be launching a couple of new initiatives. The birthday bag program will see bags of birthday hats, cake mix and balloons handed out, while the dental hygiene program will consist of donations of floss, toothpaste and mouthwash.

Something to howl about

You’re in luck if you’re curious to learn more about wolves than what you can get from “Little Red Riding Hood.” Wolves are the focus of the second in a series of Wildlife and Wild Places presentations brought to you by Alberta Parks and the Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council.

Researcher David Ausband will be at the Pincher Creek library at 7 p.m. on Jan. 30 to discuss his study of the local wolf population. You can also watch from other libraries by videoconference.

David is a research associate in the Montana Co-operative Wildlife Research Unit of the University of Montana. He is leading a project trying to estimate the number of wolves in the “Crown of the Continent,” an area between Glacier Park and Waterton.

“Folks just kind of want to know what we’re doing up there,” he says. This is his first time participating in Pincher Creek’s lecture series.

His personal interest in wolves relates to his love of animals. “All animals are fascinating,” David says. For others, his research may answer questions about how we can live with wolves in Alberta.

“Everyone’s going to find something interesting in our stuff,” he says.

The presentation will go over the project’s methods and progress, but David says he won’t be able to tell us the number of wolves out here yet. In fact, he doesn’t expect to give Fish and Wildlife a framework for their wolf policies until 2015.

So far, the team’s work has consisted of finding tracks, scats and DNA to find out which wolves are breeding and how many pups they have. The idea is to find out how wolf populations are affected by human trapping and hunting, and how many wolves we should have, David says.

David is looking forward to the event and isn’t nervous about the public speaking aspect. “That’s just part of the territory,” he says.

All smiles after hitting the court with the Harlem Crowns

The Harlem Crowns may have won their basketball game against Matthew Halton High School’s senior teams and Pincher Creek Emergency Services, but their opponents were left amused, not bitter.

The game was held Jan. 11 to raise money for this year’s high school graduation ceremony and for EMS. The Fabulous Harlem Crowns are known for touring and entertaining at events like this.

“They just joked around a lot,” says Matthew Halton team captain Claire Johnson. Her teammate Megan Albert adds the students joked around too, making up their own plays to entertain the crowd. One play they came up with was an alley-oop without dunking.

As student athlete Jack Dietze says, a regular basketball game can be kind of stressful, but this game was more enjoyable.

“It was actually more fun when you messed up, because then they could play off it,” Claire says.

“No one would get mad at you or yell at

you,” adds Ferlin Crowshoe, the boys’ team captain.

The game was an opportunity to play with athletes on another skill level, and the Harlem Crowns won by 10 points.

However, Matthew Halton won in a way.

The game was well attended by the public and the 50/50 tickets raised about $300 for the high school basketball teams, Jack says.

Phys-ed teacher Randy Whitehead explains that money will cover the expenses of the teams, such as travel and tournament entry fees.

An additional $600 was raised for high school grad and another $200 went to EMS. Pat Neumann, deputy chief of the fire department, says the EMS portion will go toward specialized equipment and also support for staff, ranging from training to appreciation dinners. However, the game wasn’t just about money, but also getting EMS out in the community. “We’re always looking for new people,” he says.

Bingo supports Polish Hall

Bingo! It turns out the name of the game is the same in both English and Polish. The good news is you don’t have to be Polish to play at Coleman’s Polish Hall on Friday evening.

The Crowsnest Pass Polish Hall Society is holding its first bingo game to support the historic building, in hopes it will turn into a monthly event.

The hall is available for anyone to rent for family parties or other events.

“It’s quite a unique building,” says Monica Primrose, president of the Polish Hall Society. It was built in 1927 by the Polish Society for Brotherly Aid, she says. In an era before unions were common, the society offered some peace of mind with accident and death insurance. The bricks in the building were recycled from Frank’s old sanatorium.

Since the 1980s, the Polish Hall Society has been running the hall, and it’s not just Polish Canadians in the society. Monica was with the group from the beginning and has been president for a while. A former substitute teacher, she is now retired.

The hall has space outside for kids to play, and murals inside depicting Poland, the Rocky Mountains and other places. Those paintings and the wooden dance floor have been there for a long time.

“It is there for people to use as a fantastic place for family parties, weddings,” Monica says. “Some people absolutely love it.”

Some of the more colourful uses of the hall over the years have been square dancing, dog training and taekwondo.

The rent is $150 per day, or $300 for the entire period of Friday, Saturday and Sunday, plus a damage deposit.

Unfortunately, the income from rentals doesn’t cover the cost of utilities and maintenance. In the past, the society has supported the hall with a big flea market, but for a second year they have been unable to have one, Monica says.

More recently, in November the society did well selling perogies and baking at the Elks Hall.

Now, Monica has come up with the idea of a bingo game, though she didn’t anticipate all the paperwork it would require.

The game starts at 7:30 p.m. Friday and is open to anyone 18 or over.

Admission is $5 and the card is $6. Buying the card is mandatory if you want to be there.

The card is eight pages, meaning you can play all eight games with it, Monica says. There are prizes donated by members, and cash prizes for blackouts. The amount of money depends on the number of people who show up.

There will also be a concession offering coffee, chips and pop.

“We’re hoping to fill the place up – then the prizes will be really, really good,” Monica says.

The hall is located at 1406 82nd St. in Coleman.

The audience was also satisfied with the game. “Our parents thought it was great,” Megan says. “I think most of our parents came to watch, and they really enjoyed it.”

Their friends also found it cool and funny.

Pat says the best part of the evening was knowing the audience enjoyed it.

Claire identifies a highlight of the game as the moment when a Harlem Crown actually jumped over student Kate Nicas, who’s fairly tall herself.

Even outside the game, the Harlem Crowns joked around with the students and were friendly. Megan says they had pictures taken together, and Claire adds the Harlem Crowns were “all smiles.”

Claire, Jack, Megan and Ferlin have all been playing basketball since junior high school and enjoy it. Ferlin has been playing since Grade 7 at St. Michael’s, and hopes to continue while taking police studies at community college.

Megan admits to being more interested in rugby and may continue playing that while taking the paramedic program at NAIT. Pat used to play basketball 20 years ago, and thinks other EMS players had similar experience. EMS put together its team by having its volunteers sign up.

Where’s the buck?

Cougars often cover their kill with debris and stash it away to finish with later.

A five-point buck is buried beneath the grass in the photo above, hidden so cleverly that only one half of his rack is visible.

The cougar was likely disappointed, upon its return to the spot north of Lundbreck, to discover Fish and Wildlife officers had removed the kill.

Judi Snowdon heard a commotion when the cougar took down the mule deer buck shortly after 11 p.m. last Monday. The next morning she found the deer buried well in the grass.

Judi was quick to point out the cougar wasn’t doing anything wrong, and that livestock in the area were untouched. This was a just little too close for comfort.

A gift from the swine club Members of the Rocky Mountain 4-H Swine Club present a $500 cheque to Angels Within Us, a local charity that helps people get a step up in life.

Money was earned through a variety of endeavours like highway cleanups, working the rodeo concession, cleaning farmers’ fields and the landfill, and working at the Angels Within Us fundraiser.

Charity work is important to the group, and members agree they’ve been raised to be charitable and get satisfaction through giving back to their community.

Fun ways to celebrate literacy this week

Canadians have celebrated Family Literacy Day on Jan. 27 since 1999, and this week local schools and libraries are doing their part to promote reading and writing.

The Pincher Creek public library is celebrating until Saturday with games, including a scavenger hunt for information in books and magazines, says Janice Day. A draw will be held for free family membership at the library for a year, and each family will receive a package of items promoting literacy.

Meanwhile, the Crowsnest Pass library will have a pyjama party on Friday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The family event will include bedtime stories and games meant to encourage literacy. The idea for a pyjama party was first carried out last year. “It went over really well,” says library manager Diane deLauw.

Canyon School is challenging its students to read every evening this week at home. The classes reading the most minutes will win money to buy books for the school library, principal Carole Goodreau says. The winners will be announced next Tuesday.

On Friday, students of Isabelle Sellon School in Blairmore can dress up as characters from their favourite books, an idea decided upon by student council, says principal Paul Pichurski. The school will also have a free hot breakfast at 8:10 a.m. so they can show off their costumes.

Children’s author and motivational speaker Victor Lethbridge is visiting Brocket’s school today, but the school celebrates literacy mainly in March, says Connie Lassiter.
