My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin Font size is an issue that’s been troubling me lately. For anyone unfamiliar with the term, it simply means the size of the text you’re reading right now.

Before I started publishing the Breeze, my dad, the newspaper guy, suggested setting a minimum font size and sticking to it. That seemed like sound advice that would be easy to follow, and at first it was.

The font I chose was 11-point Minion Pro. I can’t recall when I last had any story print in this type size. Instead, the size has been getting smaller and smaller as I try to squeeze just one more story into each issue.

Last week I realized I wasn’t doing anyone any favours by reducing the font size. Suddenly there were stories in teeny, tiny eight-point type popping up everywhere. Headlines were still reasonably sized, but editorial content, photos and cutlines were getting much too small.

Ironically, last week when Stan was making his rounds delivering the papers, someone made a comment to him that there should be more stories in the Breeze.

I flipped through thousands of words spread across 12 pages and wondered, really? There was an awful lot crammed into those pages. How could I possibly fit more?

This week, I tried a nine-point minimum and I’m pleased with the result. There are still many stories, and the overall look of the paper is back to something I like. I hope our readers agree.

The math behind an endeavour like the Breeze is simple – a paper distributed to readers at no cost must be supported by advertising dollars.

The support we’ve had as a new business has truly blown me away, and I need to thank The Outdoor Outlet/Harvest Coffeehouse, Ruffles Boutique and Robin & Co. Chartered Accountant, who have been in every issue of the Breeze since the very first.

Many more have joined the group of regular, long-term advertisers, and we couldn’t bring you the Breeze without their support.

I always encourage our readers to check out these businesses, and of course, where I go out for dinner, fill up the gas tank or do my shopping is spread out among the businesses who support what we’re doing.

At this point, you may be wondering how this relates to font size! The amount of content and the number of pages we print each week depends directly on what the advertising supports.

The Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association requires its members to have no more than 70 per cent advertising content (on average).

I just did the math, and this issue is 40 per cent advertising, so we are well below the industry standard ratio for advertising to editorial content. Just a quick fact for anyone who feels we have too much advertising in our pages.

Brad Quarin, Jessica Jensen and Kylee Warkus-Forget all started with the paper just as we began a growth spurt late last fall. The paper has consistently been 12 pages since then, and we’re on the verge of being able to move to 16 pages, which is really exciting.

Jessica and Kylee have been busy setting up new advertising clients and Brad has produced a phenomenal amount of editorial content while I’ve been sidetracked by the issues that accompany growth, new staff and a busy print shop.

I can see light at the end of the tunnel as everyone is settling into their position, and I look forward to having more time for writing myself – there will be more space to fill soon!

I have to smile and shake my head when I think back to the little paper I planned to put together all by myself ... thank goodness for the wonderful people who have come my way!

The Breeze Mailbox For Sight meets this week At a recent meeting of the Pincher Creek CNIB support group, a new name was chosen.

The group will now be called For Sight, a title that reflects the purpose of the peer support group for seniors. Three new members attended the session at Creekside Condominiums. Pincher Cowley Roaring Lions are the support organization for the group, and CNIB in Lethbridge is thrilled with our size and the participation of our members.

The next meeting will be a special event at Crestview Lodge, this Thursday at 1:30 p.m. For Sight and CNIB Lethbridge are presenting the documentary Going Blind.

This compelling show covers one person’s journey facing the challenges of vision loss. It focuses on the physical and emotional challenges of macular degeneration, glaucoma and cataracts.

It is recommended for all individuals living with vision loss, including family, caregivers, friends, business associates and peers.

Items available from CNIB include a variety of talking watches and alarm clocks. Prices are very reasonable, and allow the user to know the time and set an alarm time without having to read the display. The alarm clocks also have large digital displays and a voice that announces the time.

The money came out of Shell’s social investment budget. Shell tends to donate to nearby communities, with the Legion and the agricultural society being previous beneficiaries, Lynn says. This time, Shell also wanted to do something significant to mark their 50th anniversary in Waterton.

Janice notes the library received $75,000 from the Town of Pincher Creek and the Municipal District of Pincher Creek, as well as $5,000 from the Lethbridge Community Foundation.

The library has strong community support but could always use more, and more donations could bring about expansion of the library. “I’m always optimistic,” Janice says.

She says her institution promotes lifelong learning. “Libraries are the last truly public space.”

Lynn agrees the library is important and feels good about the donation. “I’m very proud,” she says.

“We think it’s very special,” Suzanne says.

Shell donation remembers Stephanie Hardy

It was, in part, a tribute to an old friend and neighbour that moved Shell Canada to make a very generous donation to Pincher Creek’s public library.

On Feb. 1, Shell turned over $50,000 to the library, nothing to sneeze at. “It will help us get our library remodelled,” library manager Janice Day says.

Lynn Calder, a social performance advisor at Shell Canada, was part of the team who made the decision to donate.

The library applied for a donation through the regular process, and Lynn says Shell wanted to honour Stephanie Hardy of Friends of the Library. Stephanie lived close to Shell’s gas plant between Pincher Creek and Waterton before passing away last March.

Stephanie’s daughter Suzanne Kirby was present at the donation. “She was wonderful and kind and gentle,” Suzanne says of her mother.

Caroline Johnson, a member of Friends of the Library who knew Stephanie well, calls her patient and peaceful.

Stephanie was a founding member of Friends of the Library and loved “all kinds of books,” such as art books, novels and non-fiction, Suzanne says. Caroline explains Stephanie

organized the book sales that were the group’s main fundraiser and was also involved in their memorial garden.

When Stephanie was diagnosed with cancer, she wanted any money raised in her memory to go to Friends of the Library, Suzanne recalls.

Besides honouring Stephanie Hardy, the donation is for a worthy cause. “It’s the kind of thing we would donate to anyway,” Lynn says.

Janice explains the money will be spent on refurbishing the library, taking down one room, putting up two new ones, moving the children’s room and adding new carpeting.

A gain of the alterations will be a soundproof room for videoconferencing, a place where people can talk on Skype. “We just need quiet space and meeting space,” Janice says.

Such a change means more educational opportunities and fewer people driving long distances for meetings by videoconference, with positive effects for the environment and road safety.

“It touched on a lot of areas that are of interest to Shell,” Lynn says.

Suzanne remarks that those additions to the library would have exceeded her mother’s expectations. “She would be honoured,” Suzanne says.

Essential Oils For Your Whole Family

A curious wolverine is caught on camera in late January. Hair snags are helping Alberta biologists learn more about wolverine distribution, habitat, behaviour and factors that might impact their future.

Doug Manzer is the man to talk wolverines with.

A scientist with the Alberta Conservation Association in Blairmore, Doug is managing a project to learn more about the elusive wolverines in our province.

He’s also the next speaker at the Wildlife and Wild Places lectures, to be found at the Pincher Creek library next Wednesday at 7 p.m. Anyone can join in from other libraries by videoconference.

Those who take part can look forward to a PowerPoint presentation with pictures of the land, the wolverines and the people of the project.

Doug says the presentation is aimed at a general audience.

The wolverine is a predator and scavenger known for its strength.

What isn’t known is how common they are in Alberta. They’re now considered endangered in the U.S., but because of a lack of information, they have no legal status here.

Doug’s endeavour is getting help from the public, in what is known as “citizen science.”

“That’s probably a very unique aspect of this project,” he says.

“Trappers are voluntarily participating.”

Trappers harvest wolverines for their fur and want to know if this resource is sustainable, Doug explains.

Recently, climate change has been altering the wolverines’ range, and it’s possible the way humans use the land is having an impact as well.

The project has gone about its mission by collecting wolverine DNA, setting up hair snags on poles with cameras nearby.

The results should tell us the identities and sexes of individual wolverines, and if they have pups, Doug says. The pictures can also tell us how big the creatures are.

It’s rare for people to come across a wolverine, and Doug has never heard of one attacking a person. However, he acknowledges stealing a wolverine’s food would likely have bad results.

Although people harvest the wolverines, Doug argues the animals are also important as an icon of the forest.

“They’re truly reflective of an area of wilderness,” he says. “I will frankly never harvest a wolverine.”

He is looking forward to the presentation.

Monday movie magic

Living in Ontario, Jill Strapp could see international films at theatres every month, and every fall there was a festival featuring movies from the Toronto International Film Festival’s circuit.

Jill has lived in Crowsnest Pass for a year now and, despite the smaller area, she’s been impressed to see movies from the same circuit are available here, too. Fox Theatre in Pincher Creek and Orpheum Theatre in Blairmore are hosting Monday Night at the Movies until April 8, thanks to the Allied Arts Council of Pincher Creek.

“This is a coup to have this here,” says Jill, who sometimes works at Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery. “Not every city has this, and I think when we find that you have people within the community that are interested enough to pull this together, I am, at least, very grateful.”

A movie from the film circuit is screened every two weeks, and the two theatres take turns hosting the shows.

Fox Theatre started this year’s program with The Sessions on Jan. 28. The Orpheum followed two weeks later with the critically-acclaimed documentary Chasing Ice. The next film is Midnight’s Children, a Canadian adaptation of a Salman Rushdie novel about India, showing at Fox Theatre next Monday at 7 p.m.

Allied Arts member Janet Costa has been a driving force behind Monday Night at the Movies. She says they’ve been a part of the film circuit for 10 years and have a committee who pick films available from the Toronto festival.

“We try and include documentaries, foreign films and independent Canadian films,” Janet says. She notes a variety of genres are available. “We also try to pick uplifting, lighter-type films for the dark winter dates.”

Orpheum owner Becky Fabro notes the art films seen in this program differ from more usual action movies.

“Hollywood blockbusters are surface movies,” Jill says, and movies from the film circuit are deeper. “You are engaged, and asked to think a bit.”

Stereotypes about small towns aside, there is local demand for such films. Janet says usually 65 to 75 people come, which is a lot for a Monday.

“We’ve had sell-outs in both theatres, which means 120 plus,” she says. She adds the theatres are completely willing to run the films with “a generous community spirit.”

The films have had an impact, too. “My greatest satisfaction is having a happy audience at the end of a movie,” Janet says, noting last year they screened The Way, about a pilgrimage in Spain. “Two people I know were so inspired by the movie, they took a trip to Spain the following spring and walked the El Camino. They said it was life changing.”

This year, Jill is looking forward to A Late Quartet, playing at the Orpheum on March 11, because she finds the cast members, including Christopher Walken, interesting.

“I look forward to all the films,” Janet says. Jill agrees, saying “each one is going to be brilliant.”

Jill encourages everyone to check out Monday Night at the Movies. “Try one film, any film, and just see what you think.”

Each film costs $10 at the door.

Sometimes it’s OK to make a mess!

Pincher Creek mom Jen Friesen’s daughter Amy, 7, enjoys her afterschool art class.

“She looks forward to it every week,” Jen says. Jen is thrilled with it, too.

“As a mom, I love it that she can go there and make a mess.”

The after-school arts program is offered by the Allied Arts Council every Friday at Lebel Mansion. The class is taught by Laura Heine, an art teacher at Matthew Halton High School, and is open to kids five and up.

Laura is proud of the work she does with the budding young artists.

“Kids always come and do their very best,” she says.

Every week has its own theme and activity, and the art is produced with many different materials. “We expose children to a wide variety of mediums,” Laura says.

Examples include pastels, chalk, paint, plaster of Paris and even shaving cream. Laura identifies the shaving-cream art as one of their most exciting projects, saying it was “a lot of messy fun.” By adding food colouring, the kids were able to make pictures with the cream on paper.

The kids have made drawings, sculptures and masks. “Mask making is always really fun,” Laura says, explaining they use plaster for that.

Jen recalls when Amy came home after a mask-making class, delighted with her face covered in goo. “It was just so funny,” Jen says.

The class is part of Allied Arts’ mandate to support cultural activities and education. Laura has been teaching it for three years, but it’s been going for longer than that.

Generally, classes consist of kids coming in, Laura giving them a template and then an opportunity for the kids to get creative with it.

“I do have my regulars,” Laura says. She enjoys building up relationships with kids, knowing their abilities and coming up with ideas they’d find interesting.

Parents appreciate the work Laura does. Jen says the class gives Amy a chance to work with “all the messy stuff ” she likes, such as glitter, paint and glue. Amy has been in the class for two years and her sister Anna, in kindergarten, is starting to go too.

Suzanne Teran’s daughter Vivian Thomson, 9, also goes to the class.

“Vivian’s always been a natural artist,” Suzanne says, and she thinks it’s wonderful the class helps Vivian learn.

In the class, Vivian has learned higher-level techniques and replicated the works of other Canadian artists. Vivian has won an art award from Livingstone Range and Suzanne thinks she may go on to do something creative. Their living room is filled with Vivian’s art.

Suzanne also appreciates that it’s something for her daughter to do and that she can meet people, the family being new to town.

As a substitute teaching assistant, Suzanne has worked with Laura. “She’s so great,” Suzanne says, as Laura can engage reluctant students. Jen also describes Laura as “super friendly” and excited about art.

Jen and Suzanne both recommend the class, with Jen noting it is affordable at $6 per week.

Having taken fine arts and education at the University of Lethbridge, Laura currently teaches art at the high school to students from Grades 7 to 12. She also teaches Grade 8 math. To see her work, you can check out the mural of a running deer, which she painted last year with her dad, on display at Vista Village.

Husky demonstrates customer and community service

By Brad Quarin Coleman’s Husky station was the most recent winner of the outstanding customer service award given by Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce.

For Don and Dianne Tough, who run the station, the award was a pleasant surprise. Dianne says their business makes customer service a priority, and they like to treat everybody as special.

Coleman Husky is a gas station, convenience store and car wash that Don and Dianne have been running for 17 years. Husky refers to itself as a “branchise” and owns the store which Don and Dianne lease.

The station was built in the 1980s by Dianne’s parents, Doug and Grace Raffan. They had moved to the Pass from Calgary in 1969, and Dianne grew up in the small town. The station was sold to Mohawk in 1988 and was afterwards managed by Don. Don and Dianne met in the Pass while he was managing the store. After living in Calgary for seven years, they came back to lease the station, which was still a Mohawk. It became a Husky in 2001.

Dianne says she and her husband thoroughly enjoy their job, calling it a “great opportunity to meet wonderful people.” She feels great customers are what make Coleman Husky special.

The staff are trained to respect customers, Dianne says. She tries to make sure customers are called by name and that service is provided with a smile.

Coleman Husky’s staff are “wonderful team players,” Dianne says. “We work alongside with them and lead by example.”

In fact, many of the staff joined the station when they were only 17 or 18, and stayed long enough to become parents themselves. Dianne feels as if she’s raised some of the community’s children.

When the Toughs learned Coleman Husky was nominated in the 2012 Business Awards, they attended the dinner and discovered they had won.

They received kudos from a Husky general manager, Lawrence Richler, who acknowledged the award was a first for a Husky retailer.

They often show the award to customers who reply it was “very well deserved,” Dianne says.

The Coleman Husky also gives back to Crowsnest Pass. “We’re always involved in the community,” Don says, noting he is in the Lions Club and that he and Dianne have been involved in the Legion. “We love living here.”

Recently, they supported the marathon floor hockey game to support Brenda Macdonald, who needs a double lung transplant.

One motivating factor was that Brenda’s son Tyler Tracey works for them.

After contacting Husky Energy’s district manager for assistance, they provided the players with 900 bottles of water, $250 in Husky gift certificates and 25 stuffed husky dogs.

Don says they are glad they helped out, noting the Champions for Brenda raised a lot of money.

The Toughs are proud of their award and their donations, and hope to keep their station running for another 18 years.

Winter carnival is a go this weekend in the Pass

By Brad Quarin The first Crowsnest Pass winter carnival is a go this Friday to Sunday, thanks to Crowsnest Can Do, various other sponsors and interested people like you.

Wendy Valley, who manages fundraising for Crowsnest Can Do, says the level of enthusiasm and participation has been definitely higher than expected. “What we wanted was a start,” she says.

With just a short time to prepare since deciding to have a carnival, they would have been lucky to put together six events, Wendy says. Instead, they have more planned, with activities including tobogganing and snowshoeing with the Boys and Girls Club, a Sole Survivor foot race and moonlight skiing with the Cross-Country Ski Association.

The carnival will kick off with a photography contest courtesy of Shootin’ the Breeze, Mountainside Printing and Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery.

Photographers of all ages are encouraged to enter by Thursday and drop off their best pictures at the gallery. The

entry fee is $10 per photo.

People have signed up for the Elks Hall dance and silent auction at 6 p.m. on Saturday, with tickets costing $45 per person. Businesses have generously donated prizes and money, and sponsored tables to give out promotional materials, Wendy says.

One of the more unusual events planned is the human dog sled race at the Blairmore gazebo at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Wendy explains teams will consist of two people pulling a third person on a sled and they will race for prizes. Each team pays $15 to enter. The website urges participants to try howling and barking!

One event not going forward is the night parade, as people felt they needed more time to put together floats. But there’s always next year, Wendy notes.

Although dressing up to reflect the carnival theme of Crowsnest Pass history isn’t required, it would be an excellent way to show community spirit.

Last ride with a true friend

The moon and sky conspired to give us a perfect winter evening.

Fresh snow glowed on the ground, reflecting moonlight on spruce and willow. Stars lit the sky like so many street lights. I wore a headlamp, but didn’t bother to turn it on, preferring to see by moonlight and feel rather than spotlight and insecurity.

Buddy was sleeping, but once awake, eager for a midnight adventure. I tied the rope halter and climbed on his back. He asked for his head so I gave it, then we were off exploring the shadows. A girl and her horse; best friends.

The night was not warm, but not too cold either.

I was glad for toque and mitts, and Buddy’s warm barrel beneath me. In the silence and stillness, our movement was a muffled shuffle through powder.

Until we came to a patch of old snow beneath the new – then our location was amplified loudly for all the forest creatures to know as we crunched through.

I let Buddy decide where to go and how fast. I watched the trees and shrubs, the shadows on the ground. So many nuances of shape and colour are missed in bold daylight when it is so much easier to focus on the obvious.

Now the obvious thing to do is get up and continue with life; focus on the love, the fun and the good times. I’ve been here before, as have many folks. What I want to do is stay in this memory.

One of my best friends is gone. Our herd/family is in mourning. Yesterday the horses and I held a wake, of sorts, in the pasture with Buddy’s body. I

felt it was important for them to know where Buddy had gone. Jigger, Buddy’s longtime pasture mate, guarded the body and wouldn’t let the other horses closer than ten feet. So the other horses circled and sniffed from afar.

Jigger sniffed Buddy’s head and tail repeatedly, leaving to circle, then returning to the head yet again. He stepped forward and snuffled the tarp we’d placed over the body to deter ravens and magpies.

Then he looked at me and waited until I lifted the tarp so he could stick his head underneath and smell Buddy’s back.

When Jigger started to nip at Buddy to try to get him up, my heart broke a little more and I decided the wake was over.

Today, Buddy’s body is gone. I am sitting on Skeeter. I have given him his head and he is keeping me warm. All the gates are open, we could go anywhere around our place, but Skeeter has chosen to keep a vigil at the place where Buddy died.

I am enjoying the feel of a horse beneath me. We are all trying to find peace with what has happened.

To be honest, while I sit on Skeeter, my mind is far away across the pasture on that moonlit night with my lifelong friend. Buddy and I are trotting through a silver world of spruce and snow. He was a horse that I could hop on in the moonlight and visit a world of peace and shadow. I will never forget our last ride.

Crowsnest Past and Its People Photography Contest A look at the Pass through your eyes ENTRY DEADLINE: THURSDAY, FEB. 21, 2013

Who may enter? What is acceptable?

- This is an open competition, open to all ages and levels

- Amateur and professional photographers will have a class in each category

- This contest is open to Canadian residents only, and work must be original work created solely by the entrant

- Photographs must have been taken within two years before the entry date, and may not previously have won any awards

- Images may be colour or black and white

- Photos may not contain obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, objectionable or inappropriate content

- Be sure you have consent of subjects in the People of the Pass category (see separate release form)

How to enter

- There is no limit to the number of categories a person enters or to the number of entries within each category

- Each photo submission must have its own completed entry form and entry fee paid by cash or cheque made out to

- A high-resolution digital copy of the photograph is to be submitted for publication, on CD, DVD, or flash drive

The digital copy may also be submitted in jpg format (at least 1600 pixels wide) by email to shannon@shootinthebreeze.ca

- Drop off your photo, entry form, entry fee and a digital copy of the print at Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery - Highway 3, Frank, 403-562-2218, Monday to Thursday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.,

Presentation:

- Photos must be mounted when submitted

- Minimum size is 5 x 7 inches, maximum size is 12 x 18 inches

- Photo must have a title or caption

Judging Criteria:

- Originality and creativity

- Relevance to the category

- Composition

- Photographic quality

- Authenticity/genuineness of the content (this refers to the degree of correction applied - please submit photographs that are

un-manipulated and real)

- The decisions of the judges are final and winners will be notified by telephone or email

Prizes, display and publication

- Two cash awards of $50 will be presented in each category - one to the top photo by an amateur photographer, and another

to the top photo by a professional photographer (this is based on a minimum of three entries per class)

- Winning entries will be displayed at Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery throughout Crowsnest Winter Carnival Weekend

(Feb. 23 and 24) and for a short time afterward.

- Winning entries will be published in the print edition of Shootin’ the Breeze over a period of four weeks (one category at a

time) and all entries will be included in the online edition of the paper in the appropriate week.
