My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin Last weekend I hung out the gone fishing sign and took a little vacation. It wasn’t long and I didn’t go far, but it was just what I needed.

I managed to have a full day and night with my daughter, an evening with my husband, and even a bit of time all to myself. It was basically a staycation, except I set up camp at Ladybug Villa in Bellevue rather than sleeping in my own bed. This was courtesy of an awesome prize package I won last summer during the Doors Open and Heritage Festival.

I was ready to take on the Crowsnest Pass Winter Carnival!

Jaiden and I started out at the art gallery, where we needed to sort through entries in the photography contest. For a short-notice event, I was thrilled with the entries received both in terms of quality and quantity. Thanks to Jill, John and Lexi for helping us get organized and ready for judging.

Chris and Joe Smith, and Jan and John Brunette happened to drop by the gallery during this time and agreed to be our judges. We couldn’t ask for a more thoughtful or unbiased critique of the pictures. The foursome were wrapping up a two-week stay in the Pass, their sixth annual, and are from Pennsylvania. It was interesting to hear their take on images of an area they love to visit.

With our work at the gallery finished, we loosened our belts in preparation for Death by Chocolate, a carnival event hosted by Stone’s Throw Cafe. Even I, someone who lives for chocolate, could not finish all the scrumptious goodies that filled my plate. It was two days before I could even look at the leftovers, but worth every yummy bite.

I wouldn’t suggest doing this just before heading out shopping, though – I saw several lovely outfits that I knew would not fit well thanks to my chocolate-filled belly! I do have to say that we were treated royally at Bonnie’s Fashions and had a lovely visit there.

The open house at the firehall was a busy place Friday night. I can’t believe that I’m in my 40s and have never been behind the wheel of a big red fire engine. It’s a very empowering feeling and I under-

stand now why kids love events like this so much.

Afterward we visited with friends in Coleman, then chilled (and groaned about our full tummies) for a while before calling it a night.

My initial plan was to be up bright and early to get to the Lions pancake breakfast, but once I was tucked into a warm, cozy bed, a sleep-in with no pressure to be anywhere won out. I heard the pancakes were good!

It was nippy downtown for the afternoon events, but there were good sports willing to toss frying pans and pull sleds. I was envious of Passquatch dressed in his furry warmth, knowing that I looked like Rudolph with my frozen, glowing red nose. Loreena Russomanno told me later that Passquatch would need to go into hiding after losing the human dog sled race to the fellows in tutus.

After a couple more stops I made a quick zip back to Pincher Creek to exchange my daughter for my husband.

We enjoyed an excellent dinner whipped up

by Country Encounters and a fun evening of good company, good music and dancing. Well, at least I enjoyed the latter part of the evening, while Dennis went back to the villa with an earache! I was surprised by the small crowd, but everyone there seemed to have as much fun as I did.

The last thing I wanted to take in was the family fun day, Sunday, at Fireman’s Park in Bellevue.

Ironically, at this point I was on my own and without my family. What fun it was to watch kids ripping down the steep hill and enjoying a good, old-fashioned day of outdoor fun. They were joined by parents and grandparents, some just as adventurous as the youngsters.

It was a great way to wrap up the weekend.

Thank you to all who pitched in and worked so hard to make the festival happen – your efforts were appreciated by many, and next year will be much easier!

The mountain of work was still on my desk when I returned, but I was able to tackle it from a fresh perspective thanks to a few days away from it.

The Breeze Mailbox Try your hand at these art classes Gordon Perret, who has been practising art in Alberta for 37 years, will instruct two courses that start next week in Pincher Creek. With a BFA, majoring in sculpture and art education, Gordon has exhibited in galleries throughout the province.

He created mostly figurative sculpture in his early career but now does more mixed-media pieces, usually in the form of relief sculpture or a textured painting.

Acrylic Painting Experiment with various techniques and styles used in acrylic painting. Learn how to combine acrylics with other media to create mixed-media projects. No experience is necessary, but it’s a great opportunity for more experienced painters as well. Supplies included.

Classes run March 5 to April 9 (six Tuesday evenings), 7:30 to 10, at the Lebel Mansion art studio. Cost is $130 for members and $145 for non-members.

Clay Sculpture and Handbuilding Learn basic techniques in creating ceramic pottery and sculpture. This would be a great course for the beginner or more advanced students as well. A half-box of clay is available upon registration for $20.

Dates are March 7 to April 11 (six Thursday evenings), 7:30 to 9:30, at the Lebel Mansion pottery room studio. Cost is $110 for members and $125 for non-members.

Diamond Jubilee Medal is more than gravy

A resident of York Creek Lodge in Blairmore, Kathleen (Kay) Kerr, 93, is a friendly, warm lady with pictures of the Queen and Colonel Sanders on her wall.

That might seem like an unusual combination, but in a way it’s apt for her life story.

Below the pictures are a few medals, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal she received in September for a remarkable career.

Kay was surprised to receive a letter last spring telling her she was nominated for the honour, and she doesn’t know by whom.

“Whoever it is, I thank them,” she says.

She was sure to reply. “After all, you don’t turn down a medal from the Queen!” she says with a laugh.

In the summer she was told she would receive the medal. MP Ted Menzies presented it to her at the lodge on Sept. 6, an occasion also marking her retirement from the Crowsnest Pass economic development board.

Her son came from Calgary with flowers and helped pour the champagne, and a number of close friends also attended.

“Through a lifetime, you make a lot of people almost family,” she says.

To Kay, the medal is very meaningful. “It just made me proud,” she says.

She is a royalist, remembering how Britain was bombed during the Second World War and the Queen Mother was there for her people. “I guess that’s when I first really became conscious of how important she was,” Kay says.

Originally from Saskatchewan, her first job out of secretarial school was with a Prince Albert lawyer named John Diefenbaker, who was also president of the Saskatchewan Conservatives.

“He was marvellous,” Kay says, recalling the Dief the Chief years before he became prime minister. “He was so patient with us.”

But it wasn’t as a secretary that Kay made her biggest mark. Arriving at Crowsnest Pass at the age of 19, she got started as a

businesswoman right away with Turtle Mountain Hotel, which included a restaurant.

“We weren’t trained in it,” she admits. “All I had was a business course, and that came in handy, but didn’t know anything about the restaurant business.”

So she and her husband, Jack, joined restaurant and hotel associations and learned through experience.

It was through a restaurant association that she knew Barney Gelfand, a franchisee of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Whenever driving to Calgary with her family, they always had to stop at Barney’s KFC, Kay says.

Making it natural

Faced with bothersome eczema rashes, Wendy Davies learned to make natural soaps to help her skin, and then used that knowledge to start her own business. Due to its earth-friendly nature, Willow Valley Soapworks won the environmental stewardship award in Pincher Creek’s 2012 Awards of Excellence.

Wendy, who lives in Blairmore, picked up the award from the Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce in October.

“I’m very honoured,” Wendy says. “I realize a lot of people know more about me and my business because of the award, but also are conscious that environmental stewardship is important.”

Wendy was born in Tillsonburg, Ont. and came to Alberta in 1981 after graduating from university. She fell in love with the Rockies while driving through to visit family in Prince George. “I never wanted to leave, that’s where I wanted to be,” she says.

Wendy worked as a student advisor at the University of Calgary before finding jobs at the Bellevue mines and Travel Alberta.

However, it was her sensitive skin that led her to starting a business. Wendy had much difficulty finding a product that helped until she visited a health food store and discovered natural soap.

She looked around for recipes to make her own soap, and tried making some in her

kitchen with little success. Wendy then took an adult education course in soap-making at Calgary. “It became a passion immediately,” she says.

Willow Valley Soapworks got started in 1993, based in a cabin in Livingstone Range.

The venture wasn’t easy, as she was leaving a job at the U of C with security and full benefits. “There were anxiety moments,” she says. “It was a little scary.”

But it paid off. Today, Willow Valley Soapworks produces a variety of beauty products such as lip balms, lotions and bath bombs. Wendy is the only person working at the cabin, so she knows the products are made with quality.

The business is going well despite its small size. “I don’t need to be a millionaire,” she says. “People appreciate the product, and that just makes my day.” The business, along with teaching soap-making classes, has been her sole occupation for three years.

She aims to have minimal effect on the environment, and the cabin uses solar and wind power exclusively. A wood stove provides the heating.

Despite this, she was surprised when told her business was nominated for the award. She didn’t expect to win, but bought a ticket to the dinner to show her support for the chamber of commerce. “Recognizing environmental stewardship is just so important and such advanced thinking,” she says.

When she found out she had won, “I thought I was going to faint,” Wendy says.

Getting behind the wheel with emergency services

The firehall in Blairmore has been a busy place recently, hosting a tour for the Scouts, and a community open house and barbecue. It wasn’t just kids who were thrilled to get behind the wheel of the shiny red fire engines – many adults appeared to be having just as much fun.

Benji Harris is grinning from ear-to-ear as Peace Officer Vincent Duguay points out all the cool buttons and gadgets in the law enforcement truck, in the photo at left.

The 1st Crowsnest Scouts and their leaders received a grand tour of the hall courtesy of Crowsnest Pass Fire and Rescue a week earlier. The kids had a great time learning about fire safety.

Vern Harrison notes that Crowsnest Scouts started in the fall of 2012. Youth ages five and up are welcome to participate. Beavers (five to seven) and Cubs (eight to 10) meet at the Compass Centre on Wednesdays. Beavers start at 5:30 p.m., Cubs at 6:30 p.m. If your children are interested, or you would like to get involved as a volunteer, they would love for you to join them. You’re welcome down at the Compass Centre to check it out.

Happy New Year, Iris!

By Brad Quarin Thanks to Pincher Creek’s Rotary Club, Taiwanese exchange student Iris Wang celebrated New Year’s Day twice this year.

After experiencing Canada’s version of the holiday, she and the club met at Bright Pearl Restaurant last Wednesday night to enjoy tasty Chinese food and mark Chinese New Year.

“I love Canada,” Iris says. She describes it as “very cold,” but likes the people. As well, she likes that she can celebrate Chinese New Year in Pincher Creek, and played an important part in choosing the menu.

The idea for the dinner came from Iris’s previous host, Tom Holoboff, and was executed by another Rotarian, Karin Buhrmann, who signed up participants and collected money.

The food included ribs, chicken, fried rice and ginger beef. One dish that was new to me was pork in a strawberry sauce, but it was delicious. There were also side dishes of pumpkinseeds and kumquats, which look like tiny Mandarin oranges.

Karin, who is the club’s exchange director, explains the international organization sponsors 7,000 exchange students throughout the world. It does so to create a better understanding between nations, and she is involved because she enjoys working with youths and thinks the program widens their view.

Iris herself entered the program considering it “a very special chance.”

“You can go to somewhere you’ve never been, and experience a different culture,” she says. “The only problem is you have to do it by yourself.” But of course she gets help from the people here, and she has been learning English since Grade 3.

Besides Pincher Creek, Iris has been to Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer. After first residing with the Holoboffs, she is now living with Sally and Brent Woodard. Karin explains each student can live with three or four different families so that they meet more people.

Iris’s “sister” Whitney Holoboff calls her “pretty awesome,” and Sally says it’s been interesting to learn about Taiwan.

For Chinese New Year, Iris spoke to the restaurant to request traditional dishes and also wore a pink New Year dress which she brought from Taiwan.

Having experienced the two different New Year celebrations, Iris says the holiday is a bigger deal in Taiwan than Canada. “Chinese New Year is the biggest festival in Taiwan,” she says. It’s more like our celebration of Christmas.

The Taiwanese people work hard through the year and the festival lets families reconnect. “All the family members will get together, and it’s a very important time to families to talk,” Iris says.

One person at the dinner who will soon also benefit from Rotary’s exchange program is Lane Crawford, 17, who will be going to Germany in August. He says he is excited for the opportunity to go to Germany and applied because he likes to travel.

As for Iris, she says she will return to Taiwan in five months and study psychology in university.

She can also talk to others there about what it was like here. “I will tell them Canada is my second country, and I have three families here,” she says. “All the Canadians, they are very nice.”

In loving memory of

Ernie Hahn 1914 - 2013

Adam Ernest (Ernie) Hahn passed peacefully into the loving arms of His Saviour on Feb. 16, 2013 at the Pincher Creek Hospital, just six weeks short of his 99th birthday.

Ernie was born March 29, 1914 in Pincher Creek, Alta., the second child and eldest son of John and Hilda Hahn.

Ernie was drafted into the Canadian Army during World War II, serving in Canada and overseas. He was fortunate not to see any actual “action” during the war, but helped in the mop-up and liberation of the Dutch people in Holland as well as looking after POWs in Canada. On his return to Canada, Ernie worked as a ranch hand for ranchers in the area and helped run the family farm, which he eventually took over. He added some more land to his operations after his parents left the farm.

On June 22, 1956 Ernie married Lenora (Nora) Binnie and they celebrated 42 years of marriage until her death in January of 1999. Although they had no children of their own, Ernie became a father and “Poppa” to Nora’s children and grandchildren.

In July of 2005 Ernie became a resident of Crestview Lodge, where he happily resided until his death. Voraciously reading novels and historical books, persistently building puzzles and daily reading of his Bible kept Ernie busy in his years at the lodge. The glint in his eye and that quirky little grin reflected his wonderful but quiet sense of humour, always observant and ready with a wise comment. His faith was strong and carried him through difficult times, especially the last three weeks.

Ernie was a proud 65-year member of the Royal Canadian Legion, rarely missing a Remembrance Day service and celebration at the local Legion. The Bobby Burns Fish Pond, run by the Legion, held a special place in Ernie’s heart and he loved to go fishing there.

Ernie is lovingly remembered by his caregivers Arnold and Edna Nelson; sisters Dorothea Cyr, Helen Nelson, Martha Glines, Adeline Sorge and Edna (John) Drevenak; numerous nephews and nieces and grand-nephews and nieces; stepson John (Joyce) Binnie and their children and grandchildren; step-grandson Bruce Anderson and special step-granddaughter Chris-Ann (Clair) Hockley and Bryce and Harrison Hockley.

Ernie was predeceased by his loving wife, Nora; parents John and Hilda; brothers Daniel, Norman and Carl; sisters Ida Richardt, Louise Heise and Anna Burger; nephews Kenneth and Allan Heise; sister-in-law Alice Hahn; brothers-in-law Henry Richardt, Eugene Cyr, Lewis Taylor, George Mackintosh, James Burger, Lorance Nelson, Grant Glines and Steve Sorge; and stepdaughter Helen Binnie.

Visitation took place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Eden’s Funeral Home, 966 Elm St., Pincher Creek.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 893 East Ave., Pincher Creek, with Reverend Andrew Craig officiating. Interment followed at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Crestview Lodge Pincher Creek, PO Box 1058, or to the Pincher Creek Legion for the Bobby Burns Fish Pond, PO Box 131, Pincher Creek, AB, T0K 1W0.

Philip returns from World Winter Games

Coleman’s Philip Mullen, 19, has.

Philip returned to Crowsnest Pass Feb. 6 after scoring three ribbons for downhill skiing in the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Pyeongchang.

His proud parents, Sandra and Dan, and his big brother Paul went with him and found the experience interesting. “We wouldn’t have missed that for the world.”

Dan says.

“He did very well for his first worlds and dealing with all the change,” Sandra says.

Philip made Team Canada for the first time after skiing for nine years with the Special Olympics, a sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities.

Making the national team is an achievement by itself, and Sandra asserts Philip went on to do what he was supposed to.

“He skied the same as what got him there,” Dan says.

Due to rainfall, the athletes were skiing on ice, which added to the challenge.

Philip is proud of placing fourth in advanced giant slalom, seventh in advanced slalom and eighth in advanced super G. His parents explain the difference between the events, saying the gates or poles are farther apart in some than others. Giant slalom is not as fast as super G, but requires more moves.

“He carried himself well, he represented Canada well, was appreciative of his awards

that he got,” Dan says.

One of the best moments came after Philip suffered a bad crash on his first day. In the next race, Croatian competitor Vjekoslav Pozgaj injured his foot, and Philip helped Vjekoslav to the podium during the presentation of the medals. Dan describes that moment as a cool one.

Philip describes the community support he received as “excellent.”

“There’s a lot of people to thank,” Dan says. Philip’s personal trainer in Sparwood worked for less pay, and the local gym let him train there for the games. They also received a letter from the mayor.

While Philip’s trip was paid for, the rest of the Mullens also enjoyed community support in raising the money needed to go and support him.

It’s nice Philip’s family went, and according to the Mullens, more families at Korea came from Canada than any other country.

Sandra says Philip stayed at an athletes village, and the participants visited museums, ate Korean food while sitting on the floor and met students from a medical school. Philip is now on Facebook with some of the girls from the university.

Meanwhile, his parents visited an enormous market in Seoul and saw a hanging octopus, a pig’s head on a wall and countless vendors. “Good thing we got to do that,” Sandra says.

The new executive is now up and running and the rest of us will have to get in shape to keep up with them.

There have been some small in-house changes. The main one being that Fay Jenkins is going to send get-well cards and reach out to those who need a friendly word or good advice. I know from my own past experiences that she is very good at all of the above, so please let her know when our members or families are involved big time at the hospital or clinic or, worse yet, in bed on doctor’s orders.

During February, apart from the regular programs, we held a soup-and-a-bun lunch and a Valentine tea. Both were very well attended and were good fundraisers for the seniors centre. Carol Van Gilder has been very generous, donating her time and supplies, and we give her a huge thank you for hosting the lunches. Please take note that the March 12 noon lunch will be the last for a while – Carol needs a break to start mucking around with seeds and flowers and things with foreign names. Right on!

While making new friends is usually the athletes’ favourite part of the Special Olympics, Philip describes the games themselves as fun and says he wasn’t nervous about them.

The next winter games will be in Austria in four years. The Mullens hope Philip will make Team Canada again, though the qualifying process will start from scratch.

In the meantime, Philip’s sister is working on a scrapbook to immortalize Philip’s unique experiences.

bage. Marian fixed a tasty dip and crackers and June baked a special red velvet cake. Having a big crowd enjoy all the goodies was almost thanks enough for the ladies who did such a super job.

A new idea for a ladies’ night out was a Saturday night shindig, with Rae Olds and Marian Smith serving up snacks and punch for about 20 ladies after we played horse racing and cards. There was a lot of noise and money changing and door prizes before we closed down at 10 p.m. After such fun we were very surprised, but it didn’t seem so bad to have to sweep snow off our vehicles when we went to go home – and not a man in sight!

Mark your calendar for the next ladies’ night on March 23 at 7 p.m., when two other ladies will dig up more snacks and surprises.

Bingo will continue on the last Friday of each month, starting at 1:30 p.m., except that in March we will respect Good Friday and go with our game a week earlier, on March 22.

Looking ahead to April 20 at 10 a.m., we are planning a crib tournament with a noon lunch for $10 per person. Bring a partner or come alone. A warm welcome to everyone.

Last, but not least, the next board meeting will be held on March 19 at 11 a.m., and the general meeting will be the same day, starting at 1 p.m. After the good turnout for the annual meeting, the new executive is hoping for your continued support and new ideas as the year progresses.

Annual meeting has historical significance The Crowsnest Historical Society will hold its annual general meeting on March 10 at 2 p.m. in the Coleman Seniors Drop-In Centre building at 7805 18th Ave. in historic downtown Coleman.

This year’s AGM will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the founding meeting of the Crowsnest Pass Citizens Historical Committee, the forerunner of the Crowsnest Historical Society, which operates the Crowsnest Museum.

Anne Spatuk, one of the founding members of the society, will make a short presentation on the early days of

the society and the museum.

The last year has been a critical one for the society, which faced the closure of the museum. With the support of the community and the membership, the society was able to ensure the continued operations of the museum throughout the past year.

The annual general meeting will provide updates on the society’s past year operations, current financial position, plans to implement a sustaining donors program, and future plans to engage the membership in the operations and programs of the museum.

Also, the society will be holding elections for new directors to serve on the the executive. Anyone interested in running for director is asked to contact Belle Kovach at 403-564-4709 for further information. Nominations from the floor will also be permitted.

All interested persons are welcome to attend the meeting to hear about the society’s plans for the future sustainable operations of the Crowsnest Museum, and to enjoy refreshments and a piece of birthday cake to help celebrate the 40th anniversary of the founding meeting of the Crowsnest Historical Society.
