My Little Corner

“Saskatchewan, the land of snow, where winds are always on the blow. Where people sit with frozen toes, and why we stay here no one knows.”

These lyrics come to mind as I think back to my first music festival, 33 years ago. It was just my guitar and me, alone on the stage, singing in a class celebrating Saskatchewan’s 75th birthday.

I wasn’t nervous. After all, why would one of my school teachers suggest I do this if it wasn’t something everyone did?

I learned quickly that it certainly wasn’t something everyone did! I was the only entrant with a guitar that year, and in subsequent years playing woodwind instruments. I loved music, though, so it didn’t bother me to do my thing.

I played in the first year of piano instruction class with a bunch of five- and sixyear-olds when I was in junior high. I was short enough that I could swing my legs while seated at the piano bench just like they did. I didn’t care about the age difference. Instead, I was ecstatic to finally have a piano in our house and to be taking lessons. I had dreamed of playing piano for as long as I could remember.

I worked hard at it. The following year I was at par with friends who had been playing since kindergarten. We sat together, wrote notes in our programs and cheered one another on.

Somewhere along the line I became a nervous performer, but the moral support from friends kept many of us from getting too stressed.

Together we would watch the adjudicator scribble her notes and carefully deliberate the marks to be awarded. We became experts at following the handwriting of the secretary as she filled out the coveted certificates for first and second place. We congratulated and consoled one another long before the audience

knew the class winners, and felt quite smug.

Festival was important to me, and I continued to compete until I was 19. I came away with much more than awards, I came away with skills that continue to serve me well.

Seven years later I was back at the festival again – this time as a teacher.

My parents got a huge kick from the first day. I’m sure I was more nervous than any of my students, while trying desperately not to show it. Mom and Dad thought this was wonderful payback for their years of listening, watching, and hoping I would do my best and that adjudicators would be fair and kind.

When entering students that first year, I looked back to my old programs for guidance and inspiration. The notes to and from my friends were funny, but the notes I had made regarding pieces that inspired me, combined with adjudication comments, were priceless.

The following year I became an executive member of the festival committee and remained active with the group until I moved from my hometown 12 years later.

To complete the experience, my daughter played in her first festival at the age of three. At this point I had almost done it all – I had been the performer, the teacher, the planner, the adjudicator at mock festivals, and the parent.

I can’t count the number of proud moments I experienced.

This year I’m going to try something new.

I’m going to check out at least one day of the Crowsnest Pass Music Festival (with participants from across southern Alberta and B.C.), simply to enjoy the music and to applaud the efforts of the students, the teachers and the committee members who pull it all together.

An invitation from the Boys and Girls Club

Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club is holding its annual general meeting on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Blairmore library. Members of the community can come and learn how the club, which aims to give local kids a chance to experience a variety of fun activities, is doing.

The club’s president, Scott Warris, will give a report at the meeting and says the club’s situation is a lot rosier than last year, when it was temporarily shut down.

“There’s a lot of support from the community,” Scott says. There are about 170 kids in the club.

While few people attend AGMs, Scott says it’s an opportunity to learn specifics about the club as well as meet staff and elect the board of directors.

After shutting down, the club was restarted in May 2012 when Nicole Pearse was hired as executive program director.

Highlights since then have included popular summer activities and the after-school programs started in October, which have attracted 80 kids to the club.

The kids also have a music program at York Creek Lodge and get to spend time with seniors, and a cross-country ski program that ends this Friday. “That’s been very successful,” Scott says.

All of the successes have been made possible by community support, and Scott emphasizes it’s important to work with other non-profit groups. The ski program is a collaboration with Crowsnest Pass Cross-Country Ski Association, and has also received funding from Lethbridge Community Foundation for ski equipment.

As well, the club is now provided with space

Other support has included individual and corporate donations, funding from Family and Community Support Services and United Way, and numerous fundraisers. The duck race was a successful fundraiser and will be repeated this summer.

Scott has personally been involved in the club for four years. “I feel it’s a very important service for the community,” he says, as it helps working families and gives kids more options for things to do. The club provides “a healthy, safe environment” for kids, he adds. He is a parent himself.

Couch talk is rewarding

A conversation on a sofa in February led to the opening of a new store in April and then an award for new business of the year.

Crowsnest Rentals – Tools & Equipment, run by married couple Aaron Lindgren and Kathy Gilmour, was honoured in the 2012 Business Awards by Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce.

“I think it means that we’re on the right track,” Kathy says. “Very thrilled.”

The Blairmore business rents tools and equipment, such as lawn mowers, drills and concrete equipment, to homeowners and contractors. It also sells power tools such as chainsaws.

Originally from Ontario, Kathy met Aaron while on vacation in Pincher Creek.

Aaron was from Edson but moved to the Pass for his job with Shaw, and has remained for over three decades. “And he loves it here,” Kathy says. She has lived in the Pass for the last eight or nine years.

Kathy has experience with running a business. The house-painting contractor, Kathy’s Painting, which Aaron has been a part of since he retired from Shaw, has been going for six or seven years.

However, the closing of the tool rental store in the Pass, a year before, provided a new opportunity for them. Kathy says she was talking to Aaron in February about what they would like to do, and decided to look into starting a new rental store.

Launching it was nerve-racking, as buying the equipment was a major financial investment, Kathy says. The business would

be based in a former Acklands branch, which had been sold but did not rent similar equipment.

Kathy and Aaron make a good team. He is skilled with equipment maintenance while she handles finances, sales and computer work. “So it’s a good synergy between us,” Kathy says.

Kathy says business has been good so far, and she has received a lot of positive feedback on the appearance and cleanliness of the store. As well, the products carried by the store are considered superior. “That’s a conscious decision, that we’ve decided to carry higher-quality, top-quality equipment,” she says.

“Lots of people say they’re glad we’re open,” she adds. It means Crowsnest Pass residents don’t have to drive to Pincher Creek for this service anymore.

The news that the store won the new business award came as a surprise, since Kathy and Aaron didn’t know they were even nominated, she says.

To Kathy, the award means the store is satisfying customers and offering good products. “Which is always nice to have that affirmed, because you’re sometimes not so sure when you’re in your own business,” she says.

Winning the customer service award would have been even better, in Kathy’s opinion. “There’s always next year,” she says.

Comic series a fun way to preserve local history

By Brad Quarin Frank Slide Interpretive Centre is continuing its partnership with comic book artist Claude St. Aubin to bring Crowsnest Pass history alive through a series of comic books.

The comics or graphic novels have been successful in sparking children’s interest in history, author Monica Field says, and more are planned.

The third and most recently published comic is Canada’s Worst Mine Disaster, about the 1914 Hillcrest mine tragedy as seen by young person Julia Elick. It may soon overcome the previous comic Big Charlie and the Frank Slide in sales.

“Response has been amazing,” Monica says. “The kids love the comics, but we’re finding adults buy them just to get the story in a very brief, concise and entertaining form.”

I Survived the Frank Slide is the first comic, focusing on Jessie Leitch, a girl who lost her parents and brothers in the 1903 rockslide.

The second comic is about a horse named Big Charlie who was trapped in the mine for 31 days after the slide, only to die upon being discovered.

The idea came to Monica, who manages historic sites in the Pass, while reading Legacy magazine on Alberta culture. The article was about Claude St. Aubin, a professional comic book artist from Raymond who worked on a comic for Fort Whoop-Up. Monica was impressed by Claude’s “compelling” images and “wonderful” layout, and remembered how she had enjoyed comics about historical events and Shakespeare as a youth.

“I wanted to get kids hooked on the history of the Crowsnest Pass and the Frank Slide the way I’d been hooked on the classic comics,” Monica says.

She contacted Claude, who she says was excited about the idea and gave the centre a “very generous deal,” accepting a lower salary than usual.

write “poignant, heart-wrenching accounts of the Frank Slide,” Monica says. As well, she focused on Big Charlie.

“If you are writing for young people, you want to have as your focus an animal or a young person, because that makes the story more personal for them,” she says.

She drew up the outlines of the stories and scenes, while interpretation education officer Joey Ambrosi contributed much of the dialogue.

Challenges in making the comic included striving for historical accuracy. Monica says she was picky in getting Claude to draw the mine as it looked in 1903, right down to the horse harnesses.

Claude’s art made an impact. “Claude drew Charlie in such a way that it was so sad,” Monica says. “Every time I edited this and went through the images, it made me cry.”

The work paid off, as kids enjoy the comics.

The comics are affordable for them at $2.50 each. This doesn’t create a huge profit for the interpretive centre, but the project isn’t losing money either, Monica says.

The goal is to make another comic about Const. Lawson, who was killed by Florence Lassandro in Coleman in 1922.

Monica says she’s proud of the comics.

“Of all the things I’ve done in my 31 years of government, this is probably the most fun,” she says.

“Young people are the hope for the future,” Monica says. She hopes the comics will inspire kids to continue the effort to preserve history.

This weekend, the local ski hills will see some skiing a little out of the ordinary.

Castle Mountain is hosting the Freeride World Qualifier for the first time on Friday and Saturday. The event is a competition for adult extreme skiers from several different countries, with judges evaluating participants on technique, flow and difficulty of the terrain.

Castle Mountain’s Andrew Rusynyk says they’ve been in talks to host the event for a while, as it was something they wanted to do. There will be about 10 local skiers participating. Although it’s too late to enter the competition, people are welcome to come and watch if they can handle the terrain.

Skiers under 18 are not to feel left out, because the third annual Castle Junior Freeski competition is planned for March 16 and 17. Young skiers from Alberta and British Columbia will take part on terrain not as advanced as senior skiers’, but still exciting, Andrew says. The International Freeski Association recently added the competition to its regional circuit in Western Canada, which should bring in more skiers.

In Blairmore, meanwhile, Pass Powderkeg is holding its Dummy Downhill event on Sunday, allowing families to build a dummy or mannequin, put it on skis and send it off a jump.

General manager Dave Morrison says it’s something for the kids, as they can take part in making the dummy and watch it fly and crash. The event usually gets a good turnout, and people don’t have to make a dummy to come watch.

It’s free to enter a dummy, and those interested should call the ski hill at 403562-8334. On the same day, lift tickets will cost $10, which Dave says is a good discount.

Both Andrew and Dave say skiing has been good this year. Dave notes that although the weather gave Pass Powderkeg a slow start, they’ve had good numbers and will probably be open until the end of the month.

Andrew says Castle’s had lots of snow and will run until April 7. This might be a record year for attendance, he remarks.

Shianne is going places with Guiding

Years of involvement in Pincher Creek’s Girl Guides paid off for Shianne Neumann last summer, when she was able to visit Costa Rica for two weeks.

Shianne, 16, has been a guide since kindergarten and is currently a Ranger in the organization. She applied for the trip and was one of only 18 girls and four adults from across Canada selected to go.

“I thought it would be cool because I’d get to travel, as well as help other people,” she says. “I got to learn about the culture of Costa Rica.”

Her mother, Sue Leong-Neumann, leads a Girl Guides unit and serves as the area’s district commissioner, but enrolled Shianne in the organization before getting involved herself.

“I had enrolled her when she was in kindergarten, just to have her have an activity,” Sue says. “We thought we’d try it out, see if she liked it, and she’s stayed ever since.”

One reason Shianne stuck with the group is because Sue is now a leader, but there are other benefits as well. “I have a lot more opportunities to do things like travelling to

Prior to last summer, the only other country she’d been to was the U.S. She wasn’t overly familiar with Costa Rica when she applied for the trip in November 2011, but figured it would be interesting.

Shianne was one of only two girls selected by the provincial committee as a candidate to go. “That was really exciting,” she says. The following April she learned the national committee had decided to send her to Costa Rica.

The Girl Guides can be like a sisterhood, Sue says. She recounts that Shianne went to the airport in her guide uniform and although she was travelling alone, an older lady on the plane took an interest in helping her out. She had been a guide and had also taken an international trip, to Denmark.

Upon her arrival, Shianne stayed with a Costa Rican family along with Lauren Boudreau, another guide from Atlantic Canada. “I really enjoyed spending time with Continued on page 8

Last year a commercial asked the question, “What was your first awesome experience?”

I have long forgotten what was being sold, but the question caused me to look back. The birth of my son was awesome, of course, but not the first. I had to look back through the eyes of a nine-yearold girl to remember an event that I seldom think about but has never been forgotten.

As far back as I can remember, I have loved horseback riding. It must have started the first time I was put on the back of a pony. My love affair with horseback riding never waned as time went on, but grew because I truly felt in my element on the back of a horse.

There was only one problem: I didn’t own a horse. We did have a family friend who did, but his ranch was a half-hour drive by car – the last half being a journey on a dirt road that wound itself to the top of a mountain where our friend lived – or a three-hour journey by bicycle, powered by a nine-year-old girl.

It was a Saturday, so no school, and my mother was away at work. I figured I could ride for an hour or two and get back home before Mom, who would not be the wiser. My mother always called me a stubborn child and I proved her right that day.

It was around 10 a.m. when I grabbed my single-speed bicycle with the big bal-

loon tires, disregarded the foggy, damp day and set off. The desire to ride was greater than the distance I had to travel, the wet weather, or the fact that if I were caught my mother would “tan my hide.”

The weather had not improved but had gotten worse as I started up the dirt road that wound its way around the mountain.

I had been born and raised in California and had never seen the fog so thick. I could no longer see my hand in front of my face. Fearing running off the road into the gorge on my right, I got off the bike and walked beside it.

I had taken no more then 10 steps when suddenly I was blinded by sunlight. Blinking my eyes several times, my eyesight cleared to reveal a scene I will never forget.

The sun was a bright orb, reflected off a sea of rolling white clouds as far as the eye could see, disturbed only by the occasional mountain top.

I took a step backwards to have my sight obscured again by what I first thought was fog, but was in fact lowlying clouds. Stepping forward again revealed the dazzyling scene, the bright sun in the middle of a too-blue sky that reflected off the carpet of white cloud tops, interrupted only by the occasional mountain peaking through.

To this day I can close my eyes and reinvent the vision in my mind’s eye.

And yes, it is awesome.

Shianne’s recent journey to Costa Rica wasn’t for a holiday. She joined other guides planting trees and braving foreign insects like fire ants.

Her family didn’t speak English, and Shianne learned a bit of Spanish while consulting her dictionary to communicate with them. Learning Spanish was made easier by the fact that she already spoke French, which she says is a similar language.

During the trip, Shianne helped paint a school and planted trees. She also maintained trails, meaning she carried a bag of gravel up a mountain to spread over trails in the rainforest. The gravel was heavy, but after the work was done they got to explore the rainforest. “It was really pretty,” Shianne says, and they saw some sloths.

At one point, the guides also went camping for one night. They visited a waterfall and went swimming in what the Costa Ricans thought were cold waters.

While spending time with her Costa Rican family was a highlight, the lowlight came when the guides were planting trees and were bitten by fire ants. “It hurts a lot,” she says.

Visiting Costa Rica is the most memorable experience Shianne has had in Girl Guides, but she can look forward to going to Edmonton this month. She will learn about the provincial legislature through simulation activities.

Series wraps up with Writing-on-Stone presentation

The Wildlife and Wild Places lectures held in the Pincher Creek library and seen in other libraries by videoconference will conclude next Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Those who come will learn about Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, unique badlands with a rich cultural heritage, from interpreter Juanita Tallman.

“She will bring with her a wealth of knowledge of the cultural and natural landscape of Writingon-Stone,” says Heidi Eijgel of Alberta Parks.

The park, also known as Áísínai’pi National Historic Site, is located 100 kilometres southeast of Lethbridge and boasts hoodoos, cliffs and a great deal of Aboriginal art on rocks. There are numerous things to find fascinating.

“For me personally, I like the geology of it,” says Juanita. There are also many stories that connect to the landscape, and she hears new stories every year.

Juanita has been at the park since 2007 and is now interpretive supervisor, providing rock art tours so visitors can learn about

significance. Park staff already know there is more rock art there, Juanita says.

Altogether, there are 50 sites at the park containing thousands of native paintings. The Blackfoot considered Áísínai’pi to be their most sacred land because of millennia-old stories of very important people associated with the place, Juanita says.

Annual meeting has historical significance

The Crowsnest Historical Society will hold its annual general meeting on March 10 at 2 p.m. in the Coleman Seniors Drop-In Centre building at 7805 18th Ave. in historic downtown Coleman.

This year’s AGM will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the founding meeting of the Crowsnest Pass Citizens Historical Committee, the forerunner of the Crowsnest Historical Society, which operates the Crowsnest Museum.

Anne Spatuk, one of the founding members of the society, will make a short presentation on the early days of the society and the museum.

The last year has been a critical one for the society, which faced the closure of the museum. With the support of the community and the membership, the society was able to ensure the continued operations of the museum throughout the past year.

The annual general meeting will provide updates on the society’s past-year operations, current financial position, plans to implement a sustaining donors program, and future plans to engage the membership in the operations and programs of the museum.

Also, the society will be holding elections for new directors to serve on the the executive. Anyone interested in running for director is asked to contact Belle Kovach at 403-564-4709 for further information. Nominations from the floor will also be permitted.

Crowsnest Pass Music Festival Adjudicator for Piano

Kristina Brown Born in High River, Alberta, Kristina Brown has recently graduated from the University of Calgary with a Master of Music Degree in piano performance under the tutelage of well-known Alberta pianist, Charles Foreman.

Her graduate recitals were comprised of a variety of sonatas that included Liszt’s lengthy and virtuosic B minor Sonata.

Kristina completed her A.R.C.T. Piano Performance Diploma in 2005, under the direction of Calgary teacher, Edwin Gnandt, and her Bachelor of Music Degree from the University of Alberta with Janet Scott Hoyt.

In August of 2009, Kristina attended Mountain View Summer Festival in Calgary where she had numerous master classes with Dutch pianist, Rudolph Jansen, as well as, chamber music performance opportunities of the Brahms Piano Trio Op.8 in B major.

With more than ten years teaching experience, Kristina, an enthusiastic pedagogue, has a full studio of students ranging from all levels. She also divides her time between accompanying vocal students at Ambrose University and music responsibilities at her local church.

Soprano Melanie Baux has always loved being surrounded by music. Melanie has a Diploma in Music Performance from Mount Royal University and a Bachelor of Music Performance from the University of Manitoba. Melanie has studied under Winston Noren, Karen Jensen and Canadian coloratura Tracy Dahl. In concert Melanie has performed Mozart's Exultate Jubilate with the University of Manitoba Orchestra, Schubert's Mass in C with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, Opera Excerpts with the Calgary Youth Orchestra and premiered Elizabeth Raum's Prairie Alphabet with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. She has most recently performed Handel's Arcadian duets with the Calgary Bach Festival Society as well as Rameau's In Convertendo and the Charpentier Te Deum.

Melanie has been a musical director for Grease (Winnipeg, Manitoba), The Sound of Music (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Eve: The True Story (Pincher Creek, Alberta). She has been an adjudicator for the Calgary NATS Songfest and the High River Kiwanis Festival and frequently gives master classes in both Musical Theatre and classical vocal performance. Melanie teaches private voice lessons as well as group and private Musical Theatre classes, sharing her love of music with her students.

Maria grew up playing the violin and piano. Upon moving to Canada, she was accepted at the senior academy at Mount Royal Conservatory and studied under the direction of Calgary Philharmonic concertmaster Cenek Vbra and head of Mount Royal's concervatory strings, Lise Elson. Maria completed her ARCT certification in both violin and piano and moved to complete her studies at the University of Calgary under the direction of Edmond Agopian.

Maria is currently an active member of the Calgary Musicians Association, the Alberta Music Education Foundation and is also a board member for the Cochrane Youth Talent Festival. She has performed solo and chamber concerts, festivals, and public functions throughout Canada, the United States and Europe.

In 1997 Maria founded the Spectrum Chamber Ensemble; a string quartet with vibrant energy and together they have performed throughout Canada United States and Europe. Maria has earned praise from appreciative fans for her passionate renditions of a wide variety of music styles, both as a fine soloist and chamber musician. Also prominent as an educator, clinician and adjudicator, Maria continues to make a valuable and ongoing contribution to the cultural life of Alberta.

Students Jasmine Sydora and Nathan Sydora will perform in this year’s festival and have received scholarships in the past.
