My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin I love taking road trips – sometimes I have a destination in mind, and other times things happen quite randomly.

Trips home to Saskatchewan are usually well planned, as we brace ourselves for 11 to 12 hours each way plus side trips once we arrive.

Our Easter trip hit a speed bump the night before we left, though, when a turn of events meant only my daughter and I would be making the trip. While it’s always nice for everyone to come, time together on the road has always been something special for Jaiden and me.

Since she was a baby, we’ve giggled and sung our way across many provinces. It’s when we pull out our Celtic music recordings, which no one else appreciates the way we do, and laugh ourselves silly over past adventures.

So while things didn’t bode well for a family trip, we had an excellent four days of motherdaughter time.

It was a balmy 15 degrees above zero when we passed through Lethbridge at suppertime on Thursday. There were rain clouds ahead, and we wondered if we’d get a complimentary car wash.

While we only hit a sprinkle of rain, we were lucky enough to watch a beautiful spring rainbow make its arch across the sky.

Jaiden tried to snap a few pictures on her camera, while I lamented that my equipment was buried under the mountain of stuff we were taking home for the weekend. Traffic was busy, so I chose to carry on rather than stopping to dig out my camera.

As we came closer, it appeared to be one of the rare rainbows with an end in view.

Scientifically speaking, I know rainbows aren’t objects and that you can’t physically come to the end of the rainbow. But, I also know the allure of trying to find the end, and Jaiden and

I have chased those ends into the countryside many times when one appeared to be close at hand.

Once, we were lucky enough to catch it!

We were at a family reunion at my grandpa’s old cabin at Candle Lake when a sudden downpour mixed with hail sent us running for shelter. When it quit as quickly as it began, we watched in amazement as the end of the rainbow formed on the beach, brightly lighting up the wet sand in front of us.

One of my cousins, who wasn’t yet a parent, told Jaiden she’d better dig out the gold at the end of the rainbow. I was so annoyed with him!

What did he know about raising the hopes of a little girl over a myth and how sad she would be to find nothing?

Jaiden ran for her shovel and pail and began digging into the soft sand. I cringed, sure I would soon be consoling a disappointed child. To our surprise, though, delighted laughter came from her direction instead. As she sifted her way through the sand, she found about $3 in change of all denominations.

There wasn’t time for my cousin to have buried the money, and he swears to this day he didn’t. Instead, it was a sweet fairy tale that came true on our little beach. Ten years later, it was a lovely memory to share on this road trip.

When we arrived in Saskatoon it was 30 degrees colder than when we left eight hours earlier – good thing I didn’t leave in flip-flops!

Sandwiched between the driving, we had a fantastic weekend visiting with family and friends.

The drive home is always a little mellower after a busy trip, but the perfect ending was a shooting star blazing momentarily across the sky as we approached Pincher Creek.

I hope you made some sweet memories of your own last weekend.

Crowsnest curling style

By Brad Quarin This year’s Bunny Bonspiel in Crowsnest Pass took a new twist when costumed curlers broke out in dance to become part of an Internet phenomenon.

On Good Friday, the Easter weekend curling games saw a Harlem Shake performed, an idea conceived and organized by Crowsnest Curling Club member Lynnette Jessop.

“It’s something that’s very new and trendy, and we decided we were kind of looking for something fun to do,” Lynnette says. “So many people are watching Harlem Shakes on the Internet right now, so we thought we’d do a Harlem Shake, Crowsnest curling style.”

For those of you unfamiliar, the videos have been a craze on the Internet since February, showing a lone person dancing to the song “Harlem Shake” among indifferent people. This is followed by the crowd joining in.

As for how to perform the dance in “Crowsnest curling style,” Lynnette says that in the video people will initially look like regular curlers and then look “more crazy.”

“They all come up with their own unique dance beat,” she says. As well, when the video goes to the Internet, it will be tagged as being “Crowsnest curling style.”

Planning the Harlem Shake was easy, Lynnette says. “They’ll all know exactly what to do and how to do it.”

The planning was kept “a little bit hushhush,” with Lynnette estimating 20 people were in on it while 300 people would be surprised.

When the dance was performed on Friday night, they filmed the crowd dancing first, many wearing wigs or hats like sombreros.

They then filmed the lead dancer, Shane Trotz, who was also wearing a sombrero and equipped with a curling broom.

The Bunny Bonspiel has now been held 66 times, Lynnette says. The Easter weekend is a chance for people to return to Crowsnest Pass, reunite with family and curl. “There’s always such a good turnout,” she says.

Some people wear costumes, with the opening night being marked by teams dressed with sombreros or as ballerinas and spring flowers.

An afternoon of wellness and activities for women

By Brad Quarin The success of the Women’s Wellness Fair held for the first time in Pincher Creek last year has paved the way for a second fair on April 20.

The event will take place at St. Michael’s School from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and registration ends this Friday.

“It’s a rejuvenating, inspiring day for the ladies who attend,” says organizer Monica Sczyrba-Davis of Pincher Creek’s Community Adult Learning Council.

She feels, rightfully so, that how women are doing is a marker for how the town is doing. “If the women in the community are well, then the ripple effects really benefit the rest of the community.”

The fair will include massages, meditation, lunch and a visit from keynote speaker Patricia Morgan, who is concerned with building women’s resilience.

Monica notes wellness is a broad concept, and organizers have been open-minded about what to include.

Those who attend will learn about the wellness services available to them in Pincher Creek, which Monica feels are unique. “We would like a lot of the learning of this to be applicable and relevant.”

As another benefit to local women, the event will showcase the businesses of female entrepreneurs, many of which are new. The fair will give the business owners a chance to network and visitors a chance to shop.

“Generally speaking, we don’t really see an event like this unless you go to Calgary or Lethbridge,” Monica says. “This is right here.”

The origins of the fair go to a smaller wellness weekend in the women’s shelter. “That was a really positive experience,” she says. “ I think we just wanted to grow that and offer it to a much wider audience.”

The Women’s Wellness Fair sold out last year and was well received.

To keep up the momentum, it’s being repeated this year, but afterwards the plan is to hold it every second year.

This year, participants can look forward to the Nia break, led by Claresholm instructor Lise Schulze. Monica describes Nia as “a really wonderful form of fitness” like a mix of dance, yoga and martial arts.

“You don’t even realize how great a workout you’re getting.”

There will also be a fashion component with some help from Lethbridge College.

Lunch is being provided by Rebecca Holand of Beaver Mines, who was selected for her healthy and tasty foods.

One of the hardest parts of organizing the fair may be selecting a keynote speaker, but Monica says Patricia Morgan of Calgary was highly recommended and willing to take part.

Indeed, Patricia says she looks forward to the fair because she loves being with other women, her main target audience. She told me to say she’s bringing “her mouth, her props and her passion.”

She’s driven through Pincher Creek, but has never spoken here before. However, she has a lot of speaking experience, including in Taber and Lethbridge, and her favourite talk was on Calgary Stampede grounds in 2005 about Alberta women’s history.

Patricia explains her talk in Pincher Creek will centre on the “rubber band principle” for improving women’s resilience, the ability to recover from a challenge.

The advice is to “do your best, let go of the rest.” It means women should listen to their bodies, “edit” their thoughts and lighten up.

Her speech will last 45 minutes, which she remarks is “a fast keynote.”

Other people making the event possible include Children’s World Daycare, who are providing childcare during the fair, St. Michael’s School and Pincher Creek Taxi, who are providing transportation. Monica adds the event has great support from businesses offering door prizes.

The registration fee for the fair is $15, but it can be waived for people unable to pay. Call 403-627-4478 for more information.

Community society highlights what Coleman has to offer

By Brad Quarin The mission of the Coleman Community Society is simple enough.

“It’s a community group that’s come together to focus on bringing people to our events, to visit, to stay,” says president Jane Ann Reimer. The group highlights what the community has to offer and encourages people who may be thinking of semi-retiring to start up a business here.

Everyone can learn about the society’s activities and finances and raise questions at the annual general meeting, to be held at 6 p.m. next Wednesday at the Coleman Legion.

Jane Ann says those who come will learn about the society and its past year and can nominate directors, enjoy refreshments and socialize afterwards. The meeting won’t be lengthy.

Secretary-treasurer Francine Kilgannon will go over the group’s financial statements. Francine says it won’t be a “splashy” event, and it’s a perfect opportunity to learn about the society if you’re curious.

Shell Waterton strives to be a good neighbour

By Brad Quarin Shell Canada’s Waterton Gas Complex counts 800 people living within its area, called an emergency planning zone. That includes about seven households within sight of the gas plant and another five or six going out to Highway 6, says Rod Sinclair, Shell’s community affairs co-ordinator.

Occasionally, problems may arise, but Rod says Shell aims to be “a good corporate citizen and neighbour.”

There are ways to resolve any concerns neighbours may have about Shell. The Waterton Advisory Group, known as WAG, has been running for four years and a more recent resource is a Shell Waterton ombudsman.

As community affairs co-ordinator, Rod says he supports Shell’s “social licence to operate.”

He runs the program that provides donations to community groups and events, and often works with the environmental co-ordinator.

One of the ways Shell strives to be a good neighbour is by giving nearby households notifications. The notifications may explain flames in the sky or an unusual amount of traffic on public roads.

Shell’s goal, Rod says, is to be “very transparent,” and to listen to neighbours’ concerns and do something about them.

“Our goal is always to mitigate them ... as low as reasonably practical,” he says. Shell’s response to concerns might include dust control or changing the hours of certain operations.

To help communicate with neighbours, Shell established WAG four years ago. “We did see the need for a forum to engage with the community,” Rod says. “It’s been very successful.”

WAG is part of Shell and is meant “to promote a forum for interested stakeholders in the area,” he explains.

The public and regulators can attend WAG’s meetings, and the next one is scheduled for April 11.

Generally, the meetings can inform people on environmental issues, and may handle odour or dust complaints. But Rod, who regularly goes to the meetings, says such problems are rare.

The idea of WAG came out of a similar process in central Alberta. Since WAG has had a favourable response, he says they want to increase awareness of the group and public attendance at their meetings.

Between himself and WAG, Rod says it’s rare to have unresolved problems at the end of the day, but if there are any, another option is available.

The Shell Waterton ombudsman is an independent and impartial office to assist people through a resolution process. The position will have existed for a year this June, and is in an experimental stage. The ombudsman is Rick Anderson.

Rick says he gives people with issues “someone they can have an informal conversation with.”

He’s not directly employed by Shell, working on contract through another agency, but was appointed by Shell’s vice-president for operations in Canada. Rick meets with WAG’s ombudsman committee which includes two members of WAG, two people from the public, two members from Shell and one representative of the Energy Resources Conservation Board.

“I help people navigate through the process,

I’m not a decision-maker,” Rick says. His work is confidential and he doesn’t keep records.

WAG had recommended Rick be hired as ombudsman. He has a lot of training on dispute resolution, something he first became interested in after observing conflicts in communities that he thought could be resolved by more understanding and clearness.

“I appreciate the role,” he says. Specifically, he enjoys fostering better understandings and helping to make positive change.

When the office reaches its first-year anniversary in June, it will be evaluated. “As a pilot project, I’m confident there will be learning,” Rick says.

But people are using the service, and more people should know about it. “Folks need to be aware the service is available.”

Besides dealing with neighbours’ complaints, Shell also tries to build good relations with its neighbours by giving back to the community.

Rod is currently looking at numerous applications for funding. Shell recently gave $7,000 to the Beaver Mines Fire Brigade for a vehicle for firefighting and search and rescue. He says he feels “very positive” about that donation.

In general, Rod likes his job. “I know a lot of people in the community,” he says. “I enjoy working with people.”

He has been at Waterton since 1976 and has worked for Shell since 1981. He became community affairs co-ordinator in 2006.

CCS, continued from page 5 downtown merchants. Jane Ann is a longtime participant, having had a business, a desire to refurbish the park and a family history of community involvement.

Most members are 60 and up, but the society is open to everyone in Crowsnest Pass, Jane Ann says. Some members only have summer homes here, and some are based in Lethbridge and Calgary. Membership costs $5 per year.

Those who join like to participate in the society’s events, including Canada Day celebrations, Pumpkins in the Park and Christmas in the Park.

Canada Day offers a “fun day in the park for the kids,” Jane Ann says, and brings in a good crowd.

“I think the parade has certainly gotten better and better.”

The floats are what Francine is most proud of in the society, thinking also of Rum Runner Days and Bellecrest celebrations.

She believes the floats have been “eye-catching” and memorable for people. One float showcased all of the society’s activities.

The events are enjoyed and now expected by the people, and the society receives a helping hand from other groups, including the Legion and the Lions.

members, and Jane Ann expects about 15 or 20 people at the AGM. She hopes members will bring interested friends and neighbours, and the society can always use more people.

While many members are older, the society needs younger participants. Young people have helped with events even if they’re not members. “We try to get all age groups involved,” Jane Ann says.

Francine says they need more young people involved to continue the events when older members can’t. Young people enjoy the events. “It’s their community, too,” she says.

Joining the society gives people a chance to meet others and learn about the town, Jane Ann says. As well, they can “see how it is on the other side, not just as someone coming and attending, but also someone coming and preparing for the event.”

Involvement can give you a better appreciation of the events.

Explaining her own involvement, Francine says, “I’ve always lived here, this is my home.” She always enjoyed special events as a child. “It’s part of growing up.”

She feels the society improves the community.

The work can be tiring, Jane Ann says, “but well worth it.”

Homes away from home for Japanese students

By Brad Quarin As a school year ends for Japanese students at Nippon Institute of Technology Inter-Cultural Campus in Blairmore, another looms and things are looking up.

The new school year, to start in May, will see a considerable increase in the number of students, places to stay for all of them and new programs to teach.

After taking applications until the end of March, NIT finally found enough local families to host the 19 incoming students.

“Sometimes it’s a challenge to be able to find as many families as you need,” says Susan Poelt, NIT’s administration assistant. “This year was probably the most difficult year to find homestay families.”

With five students this year, it’s been a quiet campus, Susan says.

Nineteen is a more usual number, but securing homes for all of them took longer this year.

NIT got the word out through radio, newspapers, bulletin boards and word of mouth. Any family could take in a Japanese student, including childless couples and families headed by single parents. Susan notes they just have to have a criminal record check, and NIT also inspects the homes.

NIT asks for Japanese students to be provided with their own bedrooms and prefers each family take in only one student. So far, they’ve never needed a family to take in more than one, Susan says. As well, families are supposed to treat each student as one of their own children.

For the host families, the homestay program offers some benefits. They get to learn about a foreign culture and share their own. NIT also compensates the families with $675 per month, which comes out of tuition.

The community at large also gains as the students spend money here and take part in events. In the past, NIT students have joined in on cancer fundraisers and Operation Christmas Child.

Of course, the students themselves get a major learning experience.

Many come here to improve their English, a language they can use in their careers. Some of the students have gone on to take other courses in Canada, and a few are here to stay.

Current students Mao Aoki, Kisuke Tozawa, Ryoga Uchikawa, Satoshi Takata and Kenichi Maeda have good things to say about the homestay program. They’ve enjoyed it and it’s been fun.

An exciting development for the approaching school year is the new art program, earning students credits but also letting them have some fun as well, Susan says.

Beyond that, students will spend about six hours a day, four days a week, working on their English. NIT also has math and volunteer work programs.

NIT has been running the homestay program for 18 years. Before that, Sue volunteered at Crowsnest Centre, which also brought in Japanese visitors, and my own family was once a host back then. When NIT was established, Sue was asked to work there.

“It was fun to teach them about Canadian culture,” Sue says. Specifically, she says many Japanese don’t have ovens in their homes, and that they’d show Japanese girls how to bake.
