My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin As we get older, there is an expectation that we’ll magically overcome childhood dislikes and fears and simply put them behind us. Some things do seem to grow on us, while other aversions tend to hang around.

When I was young, I wouldn’t touch a dish with onions in it. I was never, ever, ever going to eat those smelly things!

Eventually, though, I was drawn to onion rings. I was still grossed out by the onion itself, but it was easy to break the ring apart, pull the offensive onion out and gobble up the deep-fried batter. Eating onion-less rings was a treat, and even now the smell reminds me of days spent at the rink.

Gradually I became accustomed to the taste, smell and texture of onions and they were no longer banished from my kitchen. By the time I was in my mid-20s I was even able to enjoy onion rings without removing the innards.

That’s one thing I’ve managed to move past.

An aversion I haven’t been able to overcome is my dislike of mushrooms. This is totally a sensory reaction to the texture, and I can’t seem to get past this enough to even eat mushrooms at someone else’s table to be polite. Instead, I stack them on the corner of my plate and pass them off to the dog when no one is looking.

One of my university friends found this particularly amusing after joining me for supper one time. She noticed me digging mushrooms out of the chow mein casserole and asked why I had put them there in the first place. She found it hilarious that my “follow the rules” personality came into play even when using recipes to cook for myself. Although it was a hard habit to break, I no longer use mushrooms when I cook this dish!

With many food aversions, it’s no surprise that I have great difficulty letting a dental health team get in or near my mouth – it’s all very much an oral thing.

I brush my teeth several times a day and floss

at least once. My teeth should be healthy and sparkling. Unfortunately I’ve had trouble with teeth breaking, and even required major oral surgery to create a bridge that will likely need to be replaced one day soon. Despite my best efforts to avoid it, I wind up back in the dentist’s chair more often than I would like.

I’m part way through the process of having a chipped tooth repaired by a root canal and crown. It hasn’t been a lot of fun, but I’m more tolerant now of having the work done, and of the anxiety that plagues me from the time I make the appointment until the anesthetic and pain have completely subsided.

It’s not only the prowess of the dentist that matters – the atmosphere of the clinic and the attitude of support staff can make a huge difference whether you’re an adult or a child.

I’ve been in the chairs of both Dr. Bonertz and Dr. Steed in Pincher Creek, and can vouch for their care and compassion as they go about their work. I can say the same for their staff, who have treated me well in both routine and emergency situations. It’s a job not many of us could do, and they do it well.

I have a low pain tolerance and always take a firm death grip on the arm of the chair as the dentist pokes my gums with a needle that’s “just going to pinch a bit.” This is when it’s important to have a pleasant assistant to chat about everyday things until the freezing sets in and I can relax.

That is, at least until I hear the sound of the drill!

I will always be anxious about visits to the dentist, but knowing I’m in good hands goes a long way to alleviating some of the stress.

April is National Oral Health Month, and while avoiding mushrooms doesn’t affect my quality of life, avoiding the dentist will. Join me in making a commitment to visit your dentist and in making oral health a priority.

Doris and Pat are executive members of the Care Bears, who provide transportation services to medical appointments for local seniors.

The Breeze Mailbox Heritage inventory open house tonight The Crowsnest Pass heritage inventory project will be launched at an open house and information session tonight, from 7 to 9, at Coleman Union Hall.

The three-phase project includes a comprehensive evaluation of local heritage sites, starting with the Coleman National Historic Site, the former town of Coleman and surrounding hamlets west to the British Columbia border.

The municipality has received a grant for phase 1 from the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation, and the municipal heritage board has selected Community Design Strategies to provide professional expertise in evaluating the district’s historical resources.

The open house is an opportunity for you to view the historic sites currently being considered, and to learn about the benefits of municipal designation and the cost-sharing opportunities it brings to owners of such properties. You can meet the consultant team, provide input regarding local heritage, and sign up for a volunteer role that may interest you.

Trevor brings laughs, magic and hypnosis

By Brad Quarin When he was 12 or 13, Trevor Kiitokii of the Piikani Nation saw a performance by the famous Canadian hypnotist and illusionist Peter Reveen.

“I can remember it very clearly,” Trevor says.

“I thought two things – he’s either going to be a devil, or he’s going to be very gifted.”

“I was totally mesmerized,” he recalls. It was the beginning of his own fascination with hypnosis, and he would go on to make a name for himself in that field.

Trevor, who is Blackfoot, has been designated the “premier First Nations hypnotist in Canada.”

When I asked him what the phrase meant, he asked rhetorically, “Have you heard of another First Nations hypnotist?” I hadn’t.

A career as a hypnotist and magician has given Trevor an interesting life and has led him to interesting places. On Friday night it’ll lead him back to the Pincher Creek Legion for a local show, featuring “a variety of skits and acts.”

The performance is meant to be family oriented and is open to everyone. Trevor says the best hypnosis subjects are usually between 16 and their 30s, but he has hypnotized people as young as 14 and as old as 82.

Some hypnotists try to embarrass their victims, but that’s not the way Trevor works. “If anyone is laughing, it’s usually at myself,” he says.

Some of his gags include convincing people they’re seeing a scary movie, that someone else is very funny, causing much laughter, or that it’s

freezing, causing cuddling.

Once, he met an initially skeptical parent, who was surprised to see her son hypnotized, acting unusually and seeming very happy doing it.

“It’s just allowing them, in their subconscious mind, to be themselves, to be the stars of the show,” Trevor says. “I think it’s really important that we learn to laugh at ourselves.”

There’s also an element of magic in his act. It’s called “smart magic” or mentalism, and involves predicting names, numbers and places.

Trevor’s career in hypnosis began with the anxiety disorder he had since he was 14. In 1996, when he was in his late 20s, he sought out a therapist and pretty much randomly found an Australian hypnotherapist living in Calgary. She trained him to be a hypnotherapist as well.

Eventually there was a transition from hypnotherapy to stage hypnosis. “I’ve always been in the entertainment business, since I was tiny,” Trevor says. He’s a painter and a musician who’s been nominated for Juno Awards.

After starting to perform at birthdays and private parties eight years ago, he finished training with Attila J. Kun, who himself was taught

by Peter Reveen, Trevor says. It was Attila who dubbed him the premier aboriginal hypnotist.

As a hypnotist, Trevor toured North America, including all western provinces, Ontario, Northwest Territories, Las Vegas and Hollywood.

“It’s been a very interesting life,” he says. “I think one of the best experiences I have is when

you look into the audience and see smiling faces.”

One of the most interesting parts of the career may come later, as Trevor says actor Adam Beach has expressed interest in taking Trevor’s show to TV or the movies.

Trevor also gives back to his community by mentoring troubled youth in schools, camps and youth centres.

Performing at the Legion is another way to support the community, and Trevor was previously there a year ago. “It’s nice, it’s very comfortable,” he says, and it’s the closest he’ll come to performing in a bar. His dad is also a member. Dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 8. Tickets are $20 and available at the Legion.

By Brad Quarin Planning is already underway for the 2014 Southern Alberta Summer Games, to be held in Pincher Creek.

“The earlier you start, the better,” says the town’s acting recreation manager, Adam Grose. “Planning is really, really important.”

The Games feature athletes of all ages and a variety of competitions, and 2014 will see archery, basketball, cycling, golf, swimming, photography and more. The biggest event, with many teams and age groups participating, is probably soccer, and track and field is popular too, says Diane Burt Stuckey, the director of community services.

Adam says 2014 will be the 45th year for the Southern Alberta Summer Games. Pincher Creek hosted the first Games, in 1970, and last hosted in 2004.

The push to host the Games next year came from the recreation advisory committee, who felt after 10 years, it was Pincher Creek’s turn again, Diane says. They approached the town and MD to secure their approval.

A meeting was held yesterday at the town office to help determine who’s interested in doing what, and start talking with them. The planners will need to find chairpersons for each sport. Adam explains the chairperson oversees competition schedules and volunteers, and ensures referees and venues are prepared.

Diane notes they also need “foot soldiers” like groundskeepers, timers, scorekeepers, announcers, medal presenters and people handling the registration table and first aid.

Adam expects they’ll find around 500 volunteers altogether, from Pincher Creek and other communities.

Finding them shouldn’t be difficult, as many people are interested in certain sports and others have been involved in the Games before. Some people may get

involved if their kids are in the Games, and others may want to meet new people.

“Typically, everything seems to fall into place,” Adam says. Still, more help would be appreciated. “The more volunteers, the better.”

Another aspect that shouldn’t be difficult is finances, as there’s still money left over from the 2004 Games.

“This year, we’re actually getting pretty lucky,” he says. “I don’t think we’re going to have to do a lot of fundraising, which is nice.”

It’s not hard for local athletes to get involved, as the entrance fee is low and there are few age requirements.

“If you can swim, you can come and compete in the swimming,” Adam says.

Hosting the Games will provide a variety of benefits to Pincher Creek. “The big thing is, it gets people out and gets people active,” he says. That’s significant for individual health and bringing families together.

All the visitors can’t be bad for local businesses, either. Many of them will go to local hotels and restaurants, Diane says. The Games will also help foster community pride.

As acting recreation manager, Adam has met with the Southern Alberta Recreation Association, which governs the Games. Eventually, Pincher Creek will hire a permanent recreation manager, but Adam will still want to be involved in the 2014 Games in some way.

In 2004, he was involved as a Pincher Creek coordinator, which dealt more with the logistics of the Games. He organized the chairpersons and gave them lists of athletes.

the acute care floor, and maybe some jealousy too!”

Plans are already underway for Vacation a Month Raffle 3, with another 12 months of prize packages to Canadian and foreign destinations up for grabs. Tickets for the new raffle will be on sale this summer. In the meantime, four more months of winning are left in Vacation a Month Raffle 2.

Lifestyle Show this weekend in the Pass

By Brad Quarin Somewhat paradoxically, this weekend Crowsnest Pass will see its first and 25th annual Lifestyle Show – the 25th trade show in its first year under that name.

Like the previous trade shows, local vendors will display and sell their products in one location. But there are some new things about the fair too, says Pam Vamplew of Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce.

Pam, who helped organize the event, explains the name change is meant to “encompass the changes that happened in the Pass and the changing face of business as well.”

Among the additions is an event stage, which provides space for demonstrations, entertainment and a fashion show on Friday evening.

Another new feature is the home-based business zone. The idea came from people who wanted to see more products at the trade show, and there are many home businesses in the Pass. “We wanted to give them a chance to shine,” Pam says, so the Chamber lowered their prices and provided space for them.

In March, Lynn Makeiv helped organize a separate home business exhibition, and Pam says Lynn provided useful advice for the Lifestyle Show.

“It’s a partnership,” Pam says. “We really are there for the businesses, big and small.”

Altogether, over 80 businesses will be represented, with products ranging from steeped tea to construction goods, and artwork, baking, clothing and skin care. Groups like the Boys and Girls Club and the cadets will also be there. Some businesses have sponsored space for non-profit organizations.

If much of this sounds agonizingly boring for the kids who may be brought along, Pam says there will be more for them this year – free balloons, face painting and even an archery lane. The archery is part of the outdoor adventure show that’s organized partly by the Crowsnest Pass Quad Squad. Julie Rayne of the Quad Squad says the archery lane will have softtipped practice arrows.

The outdoor adventure show may also display other hunting accessories, quads, mountain bikes, snowmobiles and cars. “We’re just trying to promote our area,” Julie says. This is the fourth outdoor adventure show and should appeal to anyone looking for outdoor activities and what the area has to offer.

For the businesses, the benefits of the show will be to show off new products to large audiences and network, Pam says.

For the rest of the community, benefits include “one-stop shopping,” a pancake breakfast on Saturday morning, and a chance to win door prizes at least hourly. There will be a raffle for kitchen cabinets worth $8,000, gift certificates and tickets to a Tim McGraw concert in Calgary.

Last year’s trade show was seen by 1,600 people, and Pam is hoping for even more now that the show is “bigger, better.” The community has already showed interest via Facebook, phone messages and word of mouth, and Pam is “very excited.”

The Lifestyle Show will take place in the Crowsnest Pass Sports Complex in Coleman, on Friday from 3 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We take care of teeth all the time,” says Pincher Creek dentist Greg Steed. His office, Ascent Dental, sends staff to schools throughout the year to help spread awareness of the issue. “We like to maintain a profile for dentistry.”

Dr. Steed says dental health is important for healthy eating, communicating and avoiding pain. He’s seen a patient who had a swollen face because of cavities. “It doesn’t happen every day,” he says, but teeth breaking down can cause serious discomfort.

According to the Canadian Dental Association, each year oral cancer is found in 3,200 Canadians and causes 1,050 deaths. Oral cancer is something they screen for at Ascent Dental, Dr. Steed says. Practices like smoking, chewing tobacco and drinking alcohol increase the risk. He recently had a patient who went to surgery in Calgary for treatment.

There are obvious ways to take care of your teeth, like brushing and flossing. “There’s always new things for home care,” Dr. Steed says, including new electric brushes and toothpastes of various kinds. Trips to the dentist should happen regularly, but some need to do so more than others.

Dr. Steed, who has practised here for 32 years, feels many locals are taking increasingly better care of their teeth, showing “a great improvement in the dental IQ.” However, there are still people with issues.

Dr. Steed says he became a dentist because he was intrigued by health care, enjoyed sciences and had a neighbour who was a dentist.

Today, his office boasts the latest equipment and offers orthodontics work and dental units in the hospital for the disabled and young kids.

Sometimes toothaches and poor oral health lead dentists to recommend that patients get dentures, says Dallas Jensen of Bite-Rite Denture Clinic in Crowsnest Pass and Raymond. For some patients, dentures are a more affordable alternative to root canals and crowns.

Mr. Jensen says dentures are common in the Pass.

Most of his customers are elderly but plenty of people in their 30s and 40s have them, too. Much of his work includes implanting and repairing dentures.

A great deal of business is from people who already have dentures, as dentures can be worn down or broken and need replacing.

Bite-Rite Denture Clinic treats April as any other month, but Mr. Jensen acknowledges having National Oral Health Month can be a good thing.

The clinic grew out of his desire to have his own business. He chose being a denturist over a dental hygienist or teacher because it required less schooling and he could study close to home. Raymond didn’t have a denture clinic, and Mr. Jensen was glad to add to the number of businesses there. He comes to Crowsnest Pass twice a week.

I watched an interesting episode of Doc Zone about how this generation feels cheating is an accepted if not an expected way to achieve. According to statistics, about onethird of students cheat on tests! So, if you have three kids, statistically one of them cheats in school.

You may also be sending the message you condone this behaviour. Condoning can be as simple as praising someone who acted dishonourably to get ahead while in the child’s presence, by knowingly allowing them to cheat or acting dishonorably yourself. Actions do speak louder than words, especially when children are watching.

Cheating has also become high-tech. The cell phone is the biggest culprit. Professors now ask all students to either turn them in for safekeeping or not bring them during tests.

Teachers have to follow up by having another technological advancement that can locate cell phones. Of course this doesn’t stop a student from asking to go to the washroom where their cell phone is hidden.

With the aid of new technology, there are a variety of ways to cheat, too many to note. The attitude that winning at any cost is an example set by politicians, famous people, movies and TV shows.

I used to watch a reality show that I enjoyed until it seemed the cash reward went to the player who was the best at lying and cheating, often claiming it was only a game after all, as if that excused all their actions.

I have lived long enough to say that the way you respond to a situation defines who you are much more than who you say you are. The cheating that starts in grade school,

if unchecked, is often carried through later in life, to produce dishonest business people, lawbreakers and even cheating spouses. Getting ahead by any way is becoming an acceptable means to an end. It makes me wish for a return to days gone by, when honesty and honour were more important.

Although I am the first to say I am in no way the perfect parent, and my son is no doubt the second, there were times that I did shine.

One of those moments happened because of an accident. I was driving my son and two of his friends in my vehicle when I was cut off by a fire truck that suddenly made a U-turn in front of me. It was deemed unquestionably the fire truck’s fault. All the children were asked if they were OK and I was happy to see they were.

Two days later, one of my son’s friends submitted an insurance claim, stating he had hit his head and was now suffering headaches.

He was asking for around $1,500.

I could not fathom how he could have hit his head, and it was not until my son asked if he could make the same claim that I found out it was insurance fraud. That was bad enough, but then I learned the boy’s mother had condoned it by not saying anything.

When my son asked if he could do the same, I explained that money was a temporary reward but being honest is a lifelong characteristic. I then asked what decision he would be proud of in a year’s time. His decision was all the harder because at the same time his friend was cashing a $1486 insurance check. We had a long talk about honesty, being honourable and how even simple decisions define who you are.

He is now a plumber and, I am happy to say, an honest one.

Hillcrest Fish and Game cares about conservation

By Brad Quarin Colton Newton says the Hillcrest Fish and Game Protective Association, a group for Crowsnest Pass hunters and anglers, sometimes gets a bad rap as wildlife killers. However, the group is also concerned with conservation and developing a “sustainable harvest.”

“We’re the voice of hunters and anglers in the community,” says Colton, who is vice-president of the organization.

Being an an angler and an enthusiastic hunter of elk and mule deer, and having an interest in politics and making a difference, Colton joined when he was 10 or 12. He is about 20 now, and says the group needs more young people.

He says he is one of 200 members in Crowsnest Pass, with 28,000 members in Alberta Fish and Game. Despite the name, Hillcrest Fish and Game Protective Association is available to all of Crowsnest Pass, and Colton himself lives in Blairmore, though he was from Hillcrest.

One doesn’t need to already be a hunter or angler to join. The group encourages people to try it out learn it, and things like fly fishing courses are available. The group is paying for two young people to go to camp in Athabasca this July.

There are other reasons to join, Colton says. In the group, you can have a voice as the government regulates hunting and fishing, and help keep those traditions alive. Members also get discounts at certain stores and six issues of Outdoor Edge magazine per year.

Colton believes the Hillcrest group dates back to 1925 and was always concerned with conservation. Coleman used to have its own group but doesn’t anymore.

Some of the achievements of the group include its successful lobbying for hunting on Sundays, as well as the donations the group makes.

“We like to support the community in any way we can,” Colton says.

Donations have gone to support locals Brenda Macdonald, who needs a double lung transplant, and Joe Mahieux, who was confined to a wheelchair after an accident. The group also has a wreath for Remembrance Day. Much of the money comes out of the admissions for Trophy Day, an event held every February in which members enter antlers, horns and photographs for consideration.

Recently, the group received a donation from Teck Coal to renovate the hall’s kitchen, a project Colton hopes to be completed by the end of the month. It may be followed by a grand opening.

The hall is also available to rent for anybody.

You can also stop by at the group meetings, held at 7 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month at the Hillcrest Fish and Game Hall, located at 22802 18th Ave. Membership costs $30 per year for adults, $15 for those 17 and under and $45 for families.

Mary Craven 1934 - 2013

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Ann Craven, beloved wife of Tom Craven Sr., currently of Pincher Creek, Alta.

Mary was called to be with the Lord on March 28, 2013 while receiving care and kindness at the Pincher Creek

Hospital. She was 78 years of age.

Mary Ann Mokosak was born on July 24, 1934 in Bellevue, Alta. to Carl and Helen Mokosak. One of three children, Mary was raised with a great appreciation for family, friends, faith and pride for any task well done.

She was a lovely young lady who was meticulous, gentle and caring. She made a tremendous impression on a dashing young gentleman, Tom Craven, who won her heart. They pledged their love in holy matrimony on Aug. 15, 1953, and were further blessed with four children of their own.

Mary was talented in many ways, including her skill at embroidery, baking, cake decorating, knitting and providing a wonderful home for her family. She was devoted to her husband, adored her children, cherished her grandchildren, and was a loyal friend to so many.

She was a proud member of the Catholic Women’s League and Good Sams Club and volunteered countless hours to community events. May she find salvation in the peace of Christ and may her memory continue to bless us with friendship and love.

Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are her loving husband, Tom Craven Sr.; her children, Tom Craven Jr. of Grande Cache, Laura (Steve) Fowler of Sylvan Lake, Alan Craven of Vancouver and Sheila (Mark Kondro) Craven of Rimbey; her grandchildren, Amanda (Marc) Labontè, Tommy Craven, Kalen Fowler, Eric Fowler, Carly Russell and Emily Russell; her greatgrandchildren, Isabele, Rosalie and Sophie Labontè; her sister, Margaret (Dick) Trentham of Morrin; her numerous nieces and nephews including Corinne (Dwayne) Roland, Shantel Trentham, Richard (Nicole McAvany) Trentham and Audrey (Justin) Kurek; her extended family; as well as the many friends she made throughout her lifetime.

She was predeceased by her father, Carl Mokosak; her mother, Helen Mokosak (nee Knezacky); her brother, Carl Mokosak Jr.; and her cherished canine companion, Buddy.

The prayer service honouring Mary’s life was held on Thursday, April 4, 2013 at 7 p.m. at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Blairmore, Alta., with Rev. Renso Castellarin officiating.

The funeral mass was held on Friday, April 5, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, with Father Ben Marino as celebrant. Cremation followed in the private crematorium of Fantin’s Funeral Chapel.
