Shining at Festival of the Stars

Kristen Pundyk of Crowsnest Pass taps her way through a spunky tap solo at Festival of the Stars last weekend in Bellevue. The annual show gives students of Turning Pointe Dance Studio an opportunity to perform their solos, duos and small group numbers for an audience before heading off to dance competitions. The shows demonstrate the talent of both the dancers and teaching staff in the area.

My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin Does your sense of self-worth increase when you do a good turn for another? If the answer is yes, then count yourself as a volunteer and congratulate yourself for the good you do.

We’re all volunteers to a degree. Some help at home while others take it to community, national and international levels. Some step in when asked or needed, while others are always looking for the next opportunity to help improve another’s quality of life.

This is National Volunteer Week, and a number of events are scheduled to celebrate those who make the effort to share their time and talents with others.

I’ve never met anyone who volunteers for the sake of recognition, and find most prefer not to be noticed for their efforts. But, it’s important to thank them for making a difference.

Volunteers are the backbone of our communities. We all know those who don’t think twice before jumping in to help with the big things, and we also know those who automatically step in to do the little things without waiting to be asked.

Our series of articles about local recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal all have a common thread – these people have all made community service a priority in their lives.

They’ve also been humbled by the recognition.

In this age of instant gratification, it’s easy to overlook how much volunteer time and effort goes into the events we enjoy.

How many volunteers does it take to pull off a successful event like a dance recital, music festival or fundraising dinner? Stop to think about it for a few minutes and the tally may surprise you!

The most common lament is, “I don’t have time to volunteer.” But when you look at the few who do so much, you’ll notice they don’t have time either, but they choose to make time.

I’m a sucker for a good cause, and am quick to jump on the bandwagon. I’m proud of this.

The lesson I’m learning is that I need to choose carefully what I can manage at any given time. I know I’m not alone in needing reminders

that you need to say no once in a while, regardless of the cause.

I’ve accepted that I can’t be involved in groups that meet weekly, but I do my best to coordinate others with a frequency I can manage.

A new endeavour is taking my daughter and our cats to visit with residents at Crestview Lodge. While I stress over the timeout from work ahead of time, nothing can beat watching one of the women hold Tiger close and kiss him over and over again. It’s an hour from my day that can make the day for someone else, it makes my heart happy and I never regret it.

Take time this week to pat yourself on the back for the difference you make in the lives of others, and sincerely thank your fellow volunteers.

The 1st Pincher Creek Sparks and Brownies are hosting a strawberry tea on Monday, April 29. It will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. in the former Fields store at the Ranchland Mall.

Tickets cost $3 each and can be purchased at the door. This includes cake and beverages.

Tickets are limited, so come early.

The money raised from the tea will go to the Canadian World Friendship Fund, a Girl Guides program which supports girls and women travelling internationally, as well as projects around the globe. Some of the recent projects include building schools in Dominica and building wells in Africa.

You can also support the Pathfinders and Rangers group as they raise money for their provincial summer camp by selling dog treats.

UROC movie night UROC (United Riders Of Crowsnest), the local mountain bike club, is hosting a movie night and club social at the Orpheum Theatre in Blairmore on Thursday, May 9. The featured movie, Red Bull Media House’s Where the Trail Ends, follows the world’s top freeride mountain bikers on an unforgettable adventure as they search for unridden terrain around the globe.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the movie starting at 7:30. Admission is $5 for adults, free for children five and under, and cold beverages will be available. There will be draws for prizes from Ascent Cycle, Bike Bros. and more.

Memberships will also be available for people interested in joining the club.

In addition, raffle tickets are now available for a Giant dirt jumper bike and an accommodation package. Running for more than the love of it

By Shannon Robin Leslie Claringbull and her family were thrilled to be approved last week to host the Walk of Hope in Pincher Creek.

The national event raises money for Ovarian Cancer Canada, and Pincher Creek is the smallest of five Alberta communities hosting walks this September.

Leslie and her daughter, Danielle Tetachuk, agree that $10,000 is a reasonable goal for their first effort. They’re aiming for 100 runners to register and raise $100 each. “It doesn’t seem too far out there, especially when there’s almost 20 of us just as family who’ll participate,” Leslie says.

Money raised is used to support women living with ovarian cancer, and their families.

Leslie and Danielle know first-hand how important this support is. Last fall, Leslie’s mom, Marlene Bourque, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Through their research, about a disease that was foreign to them, they learned of the Walk of Hope and became interested in bringing the event to southwestern Alberta.

“It was September of last year when mom was diagnosed, and the promotions about the Walk of Hope were all over online when we started our research,” Leslie says.

The process of getting approval for the walk was “amazingly fast,” and over the next few weeks Leslie and her extended family will determine the route and sort out logistics and complementary events for the day.

The event will be held Sept. 8 in Pincher Creek. While Leslie and Danielle often run half-marathons, the Walk of Hope will feature a 2.5-kilometre walk and a five-kilometre walk and fun run.

The Walk of Hope is an event for all ages and abilities – from little ones in strollers to older ones on scooters. The route will use only sidewalks and paved pathways, to be accessible for everyone.

While planning begins for the Walk of Hope, Danielle and Leslie are taking on two other projects in May. First is a celebration of World Ovarian Cancer Day on May 8. Danielle and Leslie are also registered for the 49th annual Scotiabank Calgary Marathon, coming up May 26. The marathon supports different charities each year, and for the first time is donating to Ovarian Cancer Canada. This was icing on the cake for an event they had already planned to participate in for the first time anyway.

The best part is that Marlene is doing well after two rounds of treatment. Envisioning her at the finish line will keep Leslie and Danielle strong through the duration of the race. What better motivation could there be? Their love of running has taken on a whole new meaning.

Leslie volunteered at the Sinister 7 Ultra Marathon in Crowsnest Pass last summer, and this year the mother-daughter duo have joined a team to run the punishing mountain event. They can’t wait to take it on.

SPRING

INTO ACTION

The photo shows them running together in Seattle last summer, and it seems they’re starting to plan vacations around marathons.

Danielle recalls thousands of people at a memorable marathon in Disney World. “We were nowhere near the front, and it was amazing to see all these people and characters cheering you on,” she says.

Leslie has been running most of her life. As a teenager, she moved from Ontario to the small town of Cayley, Alta., and running the country roads became a stress buster encouraged by her phys-ed teacher.

After moving to Pincher Creek, Leslie ran regularly with Ann Miller in many fun run events and wasn’t sure what to do when her friend moved away in 2000.

That’s when Danielle laced up her shoes. At the age of 13, she ran her first half-maration (21.1 km) with her mom. Fifteen years later, they continue to run together about four times a week. It’s a great opportunity to catch up with each other, and a special time for them.

Danielle’s dad, Simon, brother Braeden and husband, David, join the ladies on occasion. Her 20-month-old daughter, Brinley, has already put considerable mileage on the stroller in Crowsnest Pass fun runs, rolling along with her mom and grandma.

Leslie chuckles when thinking back to days when they would run, then drive the route and check the odometer to see how far they had gone.

“Now we just run and a program on my phone tells us we’ve reached the halfway point, and we turn around and go back,” she says.

Through their love of running, Leslie and Danielle are supporting Marlene and other women in their ovarian cancer fight.

Alex and Brooke earn regional gold

By Brad Quarin Public speaking can be a challenge for many people, but two local girls belonging to Silver Reins 4-H Light Horse Club excelled in it in a competition at Lethbridge College in March.

Alex Russell, a Grade 7 student at St. Michael’s School, placed first in intermediate speeches at the southern Alberta 4-H public speaking competitions. Brooke Hammond, who’s in Grade 5 at Canyon School, placed first in junior presentations.

“I did not expect to place first in regionals, because there were so many other great speeches,” Alex says.

Brooke’s mom, Linda, is proud of her. “To see her, at 11 years old, get up there in front of people and just talk naturally, it’s quite an art,” Linda says. “I commend them both.”

Communication is a necessary part of the 4-H youth organization, which both girls, who live on farms, joined mainly to work on their horsemanship.

Alex, 12, joined the club four years ago to learn more about her horse, Dixie. Brooke, whose horse is named Dandy, joined two years ago.

The 4-H Club can teach you how to ride a horse and about the body parts of a horse, and includes horse-themed crafts, Alex says.

Generally, the club teaches leadership and

responsibility, says Linda. The public speaking can be on any topic.

This was Brooke’s first year in the regional competition. Last year was her first year of public speaking within the club, and though it was “kind of scary,” she figured she should try to move on this year to bigger competitions.

It helped that Brooke felt she had a fun topic, taekwondo. She’s in a taekwondo class at the St. Michael’s School gym. “If you like your topic and you’re good at it, then it wasn’t that hard,” she says.

Alex enjoys public speaking and this was her fourth year in the regional competition.

“I like being in front of people, I like telling people about what I think,” she says. Her subject was the famous racehorse Seabiscuit.

The girls started their competitions within the club before moving on to the district level, where they both placed first in their categories, and then the regionals, Alex explains. Being under 15, neither girl can take the next step up to the provincials.

The regional competition in Lethbridge was well attended, with Linda saying the college classrooms were full with about 150 people.

“It’s challenging to actually get up in front of a crowd of people and judges, and you know the judges are listening to every single word that you’re saying,” Alex says. But the more she talked, the more she calmed.

Her trick, she says, is to talk loudly and maintain eye contact with the judges to convey the emotion in Seabiscuit’s story. “I hope the judges will feel that, and realize this is an important topic,” she says.

The intermediate speeches had about 16 or 17 kids participating, and Alex thought her competition was quite good. With a less personal topic, she didn’t expect to win, but she says her mom guessed Alex would make the top three.

Brooke’s presentation on taekwondo included demonstrating some skills and displaying her belts. There were about 15 or 16 kids competing in the junior presentations.

“It got my heart pumping,” Brooke says. She recalls receiving her certificate for placing first, re-enacting her surprised and delighted look.

Linda notes both girls will be starting from scratch in communications next year. Brooke doesn’t know what her topic will be next year, while Alex is considering talking on her life in dance or about learning disabilities.

As for whether they will one day find themselves in the provincials, Brooke says, “Maybe, if I’m up for it.”

Alex says making the provincials would be a big achievement and she definitely wants to go there someday.

The Breeze Mailbox Concordia Choir to sing for our community Praise His Holy Name is the theme of Concordia University College of Alberta’s concert choir tour, coming to Pincher Creek this Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church (893 East Avenue). The varied program includes music by Vivaldi and Schutz and contemporary composers Hogan and Rutter.

Directed by Dr. John Brough, the choir’s 30 students are auditioned singers from various disciplines and interests. They have toured extensively throughout Canada, as well as in the United States and Europe. The repertoire includes a wide variety of styles and provides an opportunity for vocal growth, musical education, and spiritual nurturing.

Crowsnest Conservation Society

Tailgate party May 10 Pincher Creek’s Mustangs football teams will be raising funds at a tailgate party on Friday, May 10, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Ranchland Mall parking lot. Pincher Creek Co-op is donating bratwurst for the teams to sell during the event.

To sweeten the deal, there will be a draw for two tickets to a Calgary Stampeders home game, also donated by Co-op.

Car enthusiasts will get the chance to show off their tailgates along with the rest of their vehicles. There will be cars ranging from 1928 on to the modern era represented by local owners, Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village, Westcastle Motors and Castle Ford.

Music and video highlights of last year’s local football season will be provided by Pincher Media/Pincher Creek Voice.

110 years since the mountain came down

As of Monday, it will be 110 years since a crucial moment in Crowsnest Pass history – the Frank Slide, a massive rockslide that devastated the town of Frank in 1903.

The Frank Slide Interpretive Centre, Crowsnest Historical Society and Crowsnest Heritage Initiative are marking the milestone with a commemoration and consideration of how the event affects us to this day.

“I think everybody should come,” says Cathy Pisony, the interpretive centre’s program coordinator. “It’s important for people who have an interest in the history of our community ... [and] people who have an interest in what is happening with the mountain today.”

The day will begin with a commemoration ceremony at the Frank Slide Memorial Grave Site at 11 a.m., which Cathy says will have similarities to Remembrance Day services.

“It’s more of an homage to the people that were there at the time and those that lost their lives,” Cathy says. “It’ll be a fairly formal ceremony.”

The ceremony, sponsored mainly by the historical society and organized by its president, Fred Bradley, will include the Coleman Legion colour party, a minute of silence and laying of wreaths. Fred approached the interpretive centre with the idea, assembled the speakers and arranged for the Crowsnest Community Choir to perform at the event.

Afterwards, there will be a reception at the interpretive centre at 12:30 p.m., organized by Cathy. It will include a slide show and a presentation by Corey Froese of the Turtle Mountain Monitoring Project.

The slide projection won’t be more of what you’ve seen before. “It’s going to be new,” Cathy says, featuring previously unseen photos discovered at the museum.

The presentation will cover the establishment

of Frank, the mining, the slide and the aftermath to the present. “We’ve kind of looked at this event like a past, present, future type of thing,” she says.

Corey’s presentation should be particularly interesting. “I just hope everybody comes to see it,” Cathy says. “We get lots and lots of people that ask us ‘Is the mountain ever going to slide again?’

And he can answer that question for you.”

It turns out the sky is blue. Corey, who manages the monitoring staff, will be explaining the project’s findings over the last 10 years and calls the results “optimistic.” He says how the mountain is moving is different than previously thought, which is good.

The presentation will be done with PowerPoint and many photos, and he’ll also take questions. “It’s a really nice tie-up for what we’ve been able to accomplish,” Corey says.

“Corey’s an excellent speaker and he gets across what’s going on very well, he explains the monitoring program and makes it quite easy to understand,” Cathy says.

The reception will also feature food and cake.

Admission to the interpretive centre will be free for the whole day. “It’s a great way to spend the afternoon,” she says.

After 110 years, Crowsnest Pass residents still care a lot about the slide, Cathy says. “It’s a large part of the history of our community. When you look out at the rockslide, it has changed the landscape of our whole community.”

Such ceremonies are held only about once every 10 years. The 100th anniversary was bigger, and it was then that Premier Ralph Klein announced the funding for the monitoring project.

The future of that project will be discussed by an expert panel in July, Corey says.

Before then, in June, the interpretive centre will also observe the anniversary of the Hillcrest mine disaster.

Death by Dessert is raising hope

By Brad Quarin On Saturday, students of St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek will be making a dramatic effort in the fight against cancer.

In support of Strides of Hope and the Canadian Cancer Society in Lethbridge, the St. Michael’s drama class will perform the play Death by Dessert at the Swiss Alpine Restaurant.

The idea came from ATB’s Wendy Sinclair. She’s in her first year on the Strides of Hope team, which participates in the Relay for Life fundraising event in Lethbridge.

“It was something different that the community hasn’t had,” says Strides of Hope captain Dayna Wawro.

Wendy was pointed to St. Michael’s drama teacher Diana Smith and also helped secure a location. Since the play features Italian characters, Wendy helped pick an Italian menu at Swiss Alpine. “It all just kind of fell into place,” she says.

When Wendy approached Diana with the idea for the play, the Grade 9 to 12 drama students were already working on another production.

However, when Diana talked to the class, she got a good response. “They were quite keen to learn two different plays,” she says. “Crazy.”

Wendy is appreciative of the school’s contributions and the students’ enthusiasm. “I think it’s phenomenal,” she says.

The students explain their reasons for taking on the extra work.

“Cancer is a serious thing in everybody’s lives, because everybody has probably known somebody who’s had cancer,” says Tannis Bruder.

“It’s the right thing to do,” adds Whitney Holoboff.

The play itself will be less serious. Death by Dessert is a comedy and murder mystery by Nathan Hartswick, which Diana picked because it gets the audience involved. At one point, the crowd will vote on who they think the killer is.

The story involves two feuding Italian restaurants dealing with the death of the landlady of their shared building.

The production calls for student actor Cole Gerber to speak in a strong Italian accent. “There’s only the one line where I sound kind of Irish,” he says.

Some of the actors, including some girls, will be wearing moustaches.

Altogether, there will be 13 students acting. Others will be working behind the scenes, like Whitney, who’s managing lights and sounds, and Emma Burnham, who’s managing props.

Tannis is playing a character she describes as a dumb glutton. “I knew who I wanted to be right off the bat, so I found it easy to start,” she says.

For some of the other actors, the production is a challenge because they can’t rehearse much in the restaurant, which differs from their stage, Cole says. Wendy explains the play will be performed throughout the restaurant, since there is no stage there.

St. Michael’s School usually performs one or sometimes two shows a year, and in the past has supported Karen Andrew’s fundraisers. However, this is the first play to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society, Diana says. Wendy imagines it could become an annual event.

The students are feeling positive about the play. “It’s going to be good,” Tannis says.

As well, the charitable aspect gives the production a new meaning.

“Kids are doing it because it means something, not because it’s going to benefit us,” Diana says.

With tickets for dinner and the show priced at $50, Wendy, who has been distributing tickets, expects a good turnout that can raise $3,000.

She got involved because her dad passed away from cancer, and the other team members have been affected by the disease, too. “It touches everybody,” she says.

The group is also planning to handle concessions at a Lethbridge show and is holding a Lethbridge trade show in May.

Historic building’s future assured

By Brad Quarin Crowsnest Historical Society had its annual general meeting in the Coleman Seniors Drop-In Centre, and it turns out that building itself has quite a history – and a future.

After some successful fundraising, the centre is undergoing extensive renovations and the community will hopefully celebrate its grand opening in July.

“Seniors will be able to come there and watch TV, they can have a coffee, they can play shuffleboard, they’ll be able to play darts,” says Frank Loseth, the centre’s president.

The hall will also be available for anyone to rent at a good price, for occasions like birthdays and family reunions. “I think we’re going to have the nicest hall of the bunch,” he says.

The group’s treasurer, Irene Filafilo, explains the centre is rented from the municipality, which owns it.

The group doesn’t have many members now, but once construction is done and the centre is ready, the group will seek out more, Frank says. “You don’t want people in there tripping over boards and [with] drywall dust and all that stuff coming out of the walls.”

The building has been there since 1906 and was a coal miners hospital, Frank says.

When Const. Lawson was shot by Florence Lassandro or Emilio Picariello in 1922, he was taken there. However, people stopped using it as a hospital after the one in Blairmore was built.

Afterwards, Irene says, the hall went to a miners union. Currently, the building is being renovated so the outside looks more like the hospital.

The seniors put a new roof on the building in 2005, Frank recalls. After three grants, more work has been done, the bathrooms can be used by the handicapped, a wall was taken out and the windows will be replaced. Frank hopes construction will finish in May. The greatest need the centre has now is a better kitchen, and he says they successfully appealed to Teck for help on that portion.

“That was really nice of them.”

The potlucks and whist games have mainly drawn in seniors, Frank adds, “and it’s really good to get them out.” The centre has also been used for exercise classes and church services.

Frank first became interested in the centre a few years ago when he was approaching retirement. “I thought maybe I could go down there and help out, so I started to get involved, and pretty soon I was really involved,” he says.

“But I have no problem with that. I like to help, I like to organize things, I like to make things happen.”

As president, he co-ordinates the project and communicates between the seniors board and contractors. His electrical, carpentry and mechanical backgrounds help.

Irene was approached to take part in the group after their former treasurer passed away. “They needed a treasurer,” she says. “I’ve always liked working with figures.”

Soon, local residents will be able to enjoy the fruits of their labour.

By Brad Quarin It’s that time of year again – time for the Crowsnest Pass brand of rodeo, running from Friday to Sunday in the Crowsnest Sports Complex in Coleman.

The Kananaskis Pro Rodeo is going into its 31st year and local support is still strong, says Joe Trotz, president of the rodeo association.

“It’s probably one of the best rodeos you’re going to see in southern Alberta or Alberta,” Joe says. “We have all the major events.”

In addition to the classic rodeo hallmarks like tie-down roping and saddle bronc, there will be some new elements. Every year brings “new contestants, new stock,” Joe says.

There will be a new band, The Boom Chucka Boys, who will be playing their blend of country and rock in the cabaret at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

There’s also a new clown, Austin Stewart of North Carolina, who will be making his debut in our region. He has performed in Ontario and is believed to be a good fit for Kananaskis. “We just wanted to have somebody else new out here, that hasn’t been out here,” Joe says. “He’s a young guy, up and coming, and we thought it would be really neat to get him out here and give him a chance out west.”

Some local talent will be taking part in the main events, but there will also be people coming from all over Western Canada and Montana. One of the three or four locals competing is Joe’s son, Cooper, who will be steer wrestling.

“The best in Canada will be at our rodeo,” Joe says.

However, anyone can participate in the junior rodeo on Saturday morning. It includes team roping, when two horse riders rope a steer, and pole bending, when a rider weaves between poles. You can enter right at the rodeo at 9 a.m.

Anyone 21 and under can try their hand at amateur saddle bronc riding, and for those under six, there’s mutton busting, in which boys and girls can ride sheep.

While kids have a chance to win bikes, others can enter a raffle to possibly win a four-night trip to Las Vegas for two.

“We’ve been very fortunate to have the support of our community, otherwise it couldn’t happen,” Joe says. This includes the usual sponsors, the donated equipment and excellent ticket sales. They fill the arena, with the money from the affordable tickets going to having animals, the announcer, the clown and insurance.

Joe recalls how he helped launch the Kananaskis Pro Rodeo with his friends 32 years ago. “I always had a vision of putting on a rodeo in the Crowsnest Pass,” he says.

You can rub shoulders with royalty at the rodeo this weekend

By Brad Quarin When the Kananaskis Pro Rodeo takes place this weekend in Coleman, Miss Rodeo Pincher Creek Chelsea Stokke will be there, and she’s going to be busy.

She’ll be making her grand entrance into the arena on a horse as music plays, waving to the audience, and that’s only the beginning.

She’ll be mingling with the crowd, handing out ribbons, doing photo shoots with kids and supporting Tough Enough to Wear Pink Day. When the kids ride sheep in the mutton busting, she’ll be there giving the kids high fives and prizes. “It’s actually really cool,” she says.

It’s all part of her job to be “an ambassador for Pincher Creek,” explains Janet Watmough, president of the agricultural society and rodeo committee member. By visiting these events outside her town, Chelsea is promoting Pincher Creek and rodeo activities in general.

“The queens add to the rodeo – just the persona, the overall appearance and how they present themselves,” Janet says.

She feels Chelsea, 19, does this very well.

“We’re very proud of her,” Janet says. “She’s very easy to work with. She’s very excited about her role and responsibilities.”

Chelsea describes some of those responsibilities. “As a rodeo queen, we have to be the best we can be,” she says. “We cannot be doing anything we shouldn’t be doing in public.”

“She’s an active role model for younger girls,” Janet adds.

Last year, Chelsea served as Little Miss Rodeo, which Janet calls Miss Teen Rodeo since the position is for girls aged 13 to 17.

Chelsea was inspired to pursue a rodeo queen position by one of her predecessors, Kate Fullerton. Chelsea and Kate went to the same school and knew each other well.

“She told me it would be a great thing for me to do it, because I had the riding ability,” Chelsea recalls. “She helped me through it, and

telling me all her stories about where she’s gone and going to the Calgary Stampede, kind of made me feel like maybe I can do this.”

Getting the title herself involved riding tests, a written test, a fashion show and speeches.

Although a little nervous, she feels she did well. “I goofed around in my speeches, made people laugh.”

While Jodie Dunbar reigned as queen, Chelsea became Little Miss Rodeo and describes the experience as “pretty amazing.”

In fact, Chelsea sometimes found herself filling in for Miss Rodeo.

The experience taught her a lot. “I learned to be more confident in myself,” she says. After so many public appearances, she adapted to the limelight.

There were other benefits, particularly when she visited the Calgary Stampede. “Every rodeo queen would say the Calgary Stampede was pretty eventful,” she says.

Perhaps the most memorable part of it was having her picture taken with members of the military. “Just the way they treated you, they made you feel special,” she says.

Among other interesting people she met were country music star Dierks Bentley and rodeo queens from far-off places, like Miss Rodeo Australia. “They tell you what they do over there and we tell them what we do over here, and they think that’s totally weird,” she says with a laugh.

Unfortunately, while serving as Little Miss Rodeo, she hurt her shoulder, which prevented her from participating in team roping. It was a sport she loved and had been practising for three years.

“I’m a rancher’s daughter, so it’s kind of in the family already, but it’s just a rush,” she says.

She may be able to start again in three months.

She doesn’t feel the shoulder injury hurt her efforts to graduate from Little Miss Rodeo to Miss Rodeo. “I just did the best I could with

Sunday is Tough Enough to Wear Pink Day, on which everyone can wear pink to raise awareness of breast cancer. A 50-50 draw and an auction of a steer hide will raise money for cancer research.

Rodeo tickets are $15 for adults, $7 for seniors and for kids between 6 and 14, and free for those five and under.

Hillcrest used to have rodeos that are no longer running, but the Hillcrest rodeo was still going when they started the Kananaskis Pro Rodeo.

“We thought if they could put one on there and they did a great job, we could possibly put an indoor one on in the spring,” Joe says.

So Joe and his friends met to begin the process of establishing a rodeo. “We started with nothing.”

In July, Chelsea will have to decide if she wants to run again for Miss Rodeo. Afterwards, she wants to go to Purely Inspired in Lethbridge to become a hairdresser. “I always was interested, since I was little. I just fooled around with my sister’s hair, had fun with it.”

There’s some question of whether Pincher Creek will be able to fill the void when Chelsea leaves. “It is nice to have the Miss Rodeo,” Janet says. “It would be nice to keep the program going, but we’re just not getting the applicants.”

Chelsea was the only candidate for this year, and Janet wonders if the issue is the time commitment.

Chelsea thinks the issue is that girls are leaving town for higher education after finishing high school. She does recommend younger girls give the program a try to help with their confidence and future careers.

Walk for guide dogs with the Lions May 5

By Susan Vogelaar Spring is coming and so is the Lions Foundation’s annual Purina Walk for Dog Guides. Thanks to past supporters, the foundation has been able to raise funds each year to train dogs to assist those who require special help to function in their daily lives.

The walk will take place on Sunday, May 5 at the Pincher Creek Community Centre arena, with registration at 1:30 p.m. Participants are encouraged to bring out their dogs and take part in a social afternoon – walking, visiting and having lunch while raising money for a worthwhile cause. Consider sponsoring a Lions member or a friend if you can’t do the walk.

The money is used to train five types of dog guides: canine vision, hearing ear, special skills, seizure response and autism assistance.

Each dog guide costs approximately $20,000 to raise and train, and then is given to a qualified applicant at no cost. The dogs are trained in Oakville, Ont. by the Lions Foundation. At present there are 11 service dogs in southern Alberta.

The annual walk, which takes place in over 200 communities across Canada, allows the foundation to continue its quest to provide these dogs to individuals who will benefit from the program. By participating in the walk and donating funds, generous community mem-

bers ensure this worthwhile project is carried on from year to year.

As a new project, the foundation hopes to raise enough funds to begin training diabetic alert dog guides for people with Type 1 diabetes. These dogs can detect and alert when life-threatening changes in blood glucose levels occur. The facilities in Ontario will also be expanded to serve more potential clients, training them on how to work with their dogs.

Last year the southern region of Alberta raised more money than the city of Toronto.

This has become an annual challenge and we hope to fulfill our goals again this year. The more money that is raised, the more dogs can be trained and the more clients will be able to have an improved lifestyle.

Clean it up, spruce it up all month long!

The annual Pitch-in program is coming up soon, and it’s a great way to clean up and spruce up our community!

Taking into account our usual spring weather here in Pincher Creek, we have extended the cleanup campaign to be one month long, running April 21 to May 21. Also. there is an opportunity to do a 20 Minute Makeover, which could be fun for any business or homeowner to do.

Garbage bags and gloves are available at the rec office, free of charge. Call 627-4322 to arrange pickup.

We encourage people to register their cleanup with us (before or after) so we can include this information in the Communities in Bloom documentation (tidiness, community involvement).

Pincher Creek will be evaluated by national judges again this year, and we anticipate their arrival on July 23, with evaluation on July 24. We are not registered in the competitive category; however, Pincher Creek will receive the full evaluation from the judges with a score.

In 2012 we took a well-deserved rest from competing and evaluation. In 2011, we received a score of 87.15 per cent so we hope to have maintained the good work!

Thrifty volunteer work warms many

By Donna Elliott Sharol Mottl crochets afghans and asked me in January 2011 where she could donate some.

We decided Vista Village would appreciate them. We delivered 13 there the next month and another 11 throughout the year.

In 2012, Sharol and I decided the women’s shelter would appreciate some. A total of 28 were delivered by Sharol in 2012. They were given at Valentine’s and Easter, in the summer, and at Thanksgiving and Christmas. In February this year, four more afghans were delivered to the shelter, and another five will be delivered there soon.

Yarn that comes in to Aquila’s and Priscilla’s, the United Church thrift shop, is given to Sharol, and she donates lots of her own.

Over 50 dozen baby toques have been knit

by Nancy Cummings for several years and given

to our local hospital for newborns – plus some have been delivered to Lethbridge Regional Hospital and the Fernie hospital. Any baby wool that comes into the thrift shop is given to her, and she purchases some also.

Our thrift shop is a great service to our community, run by volunteers only. Donna Elliott has been the volunteer co-ordinator for over 25 years. Each Thursday, usually 12 ladies come to sort, mark items, clean and iron. Three ladies take turns phoning for workers each week.

During the week, Sharol also brings in many bags and boxes (some very heavy) that have been dropped off outside.

We certainly appreciate all the volunteers, including those from St. John’s Anglican Church. We appreciate the generous community members who donate clean, saleable clothes and various small items.

New wheels for Mike Mike Camilli of Fernie won the Pincher Creek Curling Club’s Polaris ATV draw. The club is raising money for a new building and for much-needed repairs to the current one until a new one can be built.

The club drew the winning ticket on Wednesday evening and phoned Mike. He made arrangements to pick the quad up at Cervus. The club purchased the quad and Cervus gave them a deal on it, made sure a PDI was done and went over the quad with Mike on Friday morning.

Mike was very happy to win and said it was like an early birthday present. His birthday was on Saturday!

Silver Reins 4-H public speaking

By Alex Russell Over the past couple of months, 4-H clubs all around southern Alberta have been competing in public speaking competitions, at club level, districts, regionals and provincials.

Every person in every club needs to prepare a speech or a presentation, and present it to their club and judges as part of the requirements to be in 4-H. If the member wishes to be marked on their public speaking and possibly move on to the next level, then the member has to present it to the judges. The first level that you will enter in is club level. This is basically presenting your speech or presentation to your own club. If you make it into the top two of your category then you will move on to the next level: districts.

When you are in districts you compete against … well, your district, which includes all the clubs in the community. Now that you are getting into the higher levels, the people who have prepared a speech and the people who have prepared a presentation will do their presenting on two separate days. A person who has prepared a speech has the right to choose any topic as long as the content is appropriate, and the same goes for the people doing a presentation. People can choose from numerous topics, including horse care, trips and vacations, Canadian stereotypes, archery, how to make horse cookies and lots more.

One thing that a member doing a speech has to do is called an impromptu, which is basically a speech that the member did not memorize or prepare. In an impromptu, you have 15 seconds to choose between three topics given to you on a card, one minute to get your thoughts together, and then one to two minutes to present on your chosen topic. Impromptu topics can range from “How to eat an oreo cookie” to “What is your take on global warming?”

The members that do presentations usually use props and do not have to do impromptus; however, they have to make their presentation a couple of minutes longer than a speech.

It’s Graduation Time!

If you once again make it into the top two in your category, you go on to regionals, which includes all of southern Alberta. Finally, a 4-H member can move on to provincials, if you are speaking or presenting at the senior level and make it into the top two. Silver Reins Light Horse Club was lucky enough to have two club members go on to regionals, and both won first place! Alex Russell placed first in regional intermediate speeches and Brooke Hammond placed first in junior presentations with her topic of taekwondo.

When I asked Brooke a few questions about how she felt doing her presentation, she said, “I chose the topic because I know a lot about it and I am in it.” She also said, “At first I was nervous, but once I did a few of my moves my heart was racing, and I had lots of fun!” Brooke stated that “it was a great opportunity but required a lot of confidence.”

As for me and my topic of Seabiscuit the Legendary Race Horse, I was less nervous doing my speech and more nervous when doing my impromptu!

Overall, Silver Reins did very well with public speaking.

There were 13 Silver Reins competitors who moved on from club level to districts, and six who moved on from districts to regionals. In junior presentations, as mentioned before, Brooke Hammond moved on to districts and regionals. Haylee Williams and Sommer Hagley also moved on from club level to districts and regionals. In intermediate presentations, Kassi Wells and Samantha Williams moved on to districts. In senior presentations, Rebecca Taylor and Kelsie Simpson moved on to districts, also Taylor Wells and Megan McGlynn moved on to districts and regionals. In junior speeches, Erica Mackenzie and Jessie Terpstra moved on to districts. In intermediate speeches, Alex Russell moved on to districts and regionals, and Sydney Bruder moved on to districts.

I have to say that I admire anyone who has the confidence and courage to get up in front of a crowd and public speak! Congratulations to all 4-H members who participated!
