The Breeze Mailbox Discovery day was a blast!

Last Saturday, Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce hosted its second annual Kids’ Discovery Day, designed to bring the business community together with the community at large.

This free event for kids ages six to 12 turned out to be a huge success! Forty-five kids signed up, and wore their Kids’ Discovery T-shirts and a big smile. Their exploration tour started at 10 a.m. Thirteen local businesses and organizations opened their doors to welcome groups of up to five kids. Through some engaging, hands-on experiences, the kids got to learn lots about the businesses in their community.

For participating businesses and community service agencies, it was an opportunity to raise awareness of their products, services and activities and to encourage community volunteerism. And it worked! One youngster, for instance, asked Celeste, at Celestial Sweets, if she could come back and work there in summer, and some kids decided to become reporters while working on a story with the Pincher Creek Voice.

Heritage Inn Hotel and Convention Centre was the central venue where kids could let their creativity run wild while playing with PlayMais, and win prizes at the wheel of fortune. Papa Joe entertained the crowd by making balloon animals and showing magic tricks – always a big hit.

The closing event this year, sponsored by Heritage Inn, was a magic show by Calgary magician Yeats Wong. The enthusiasm of more than 100 spectators was incredible. Kids were watching with amazement, and when Yeats asked for volunteers, at least 50 little hands went right up in the air. The show was a great end to a very successful day.

Everyone went home with a satisfied smile and lots of new experiences, which assures me that they will be back next year.

This youth initiative is definitely growing, and we’re already thinking about how to make the next Kids’ Discovery Day an even bigger success.

Walk with the Wilmots for cystic fibrosis

By Shannon Robin The first Crowsnest Pass Great Strides walk – taking steps to cure cystic fibrosis – will be held May 26 from Fireman’s Park in Bellevue. As well as raising funds for CF research and care, the event will be a celebration of the 10th walk for Bill and Jenny Wilmot and their daughter Libbey, who was diagnosed with the disease as an infant.

The Coleman family, including sons Edison and Finley, have participated in Great Strides walks in Lethbridge and Calgary in the past, and thought it would be a great idea to bring the walk to Crowsnest Pass on this anniversary year.

They’ve planned a great morning, including a free barbecue and kids’ games along with a walk of about five kilometres.

May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month, and Bill points out that the walk is also to educate people about the disease. “There are a million good charities out there,” he says. If people understand what CF is about, the Wilmots hope others will be interested in supporting the cause which is so important to them.

“We really wanted to have the walk here,” Jenny says. “It’s hard to be the face of CF, but if we’re not willing to raise money for it, who is?”

After launching a Facebook page with a personal video, Bill and Jenny were overwhelmed by the positive community response they received.

“I shouldn’t have been surprised by the support,” Jenny says. “We chose to move here five years ago and this is a fantastic community.” Friends, neighbours and strangers are reaching out to support the family.

Teri Harrison is holding a charity Zumba night as a fundraiser for the walk, and Karen Whelan has encouraged Libbey to create a design that Logomotives will reproduce on water bottles to be sold at various events. The design is a beautiful depiction of how Libbey feels about many things, and the bottles will be a hot seller.

Cystic fibrosis has been part of Bill and Jenny’s lives for 10 years. When Jenny was pregnant with Libbey, a routine ultrasound showed the baby had a bowel abnormality. Subsequent testing determined that Jenny and Bill are both carriers of the gene responsible for CF. The statistical odds of their baby having CF were 25 per cent.

As first-time parents, they learned that CF has no cure and is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting children. The news was a surprise, and the couple met with CF clinic staff in Calgary to learn what they might expect.

“Amnio could have shown for sure,” Jenny says, adding that knowing wouldn’t have affected their actions so they chose not to take the risk.

“We wouldn’t do anything different and were just very happy to have a child.”

Libbey had surgery to deal with the bowel obstruction when she was only a day and a half old. “After 12 days of sleeping at the hospital after delivering a baby, we brought her home. We had a brand new baby with an ileostomy bag – we were

new parents and it was challenging,” Jenny says.

“It’s not what we planned, but it’s what we got.”

Nine-year-old Libbey and three-year-old Finley both have CF, while six-year-old Edison is a carrier. Libbey and Finely are treated at Calgary Children’s Hospital, along with about 125 other children from southern Alberta and British Columbia.

Cystic fibrosis causes thick mucus to build up in the lungs and leads to respiratory issues. At the same time, significant mucus and protein accumulations in the digestive tract lead to difficulty with digestion and inadequate nourishment.

Standard medical care includes visiting the CF clinic in Calgary every three months. Over the course of five hours, Libbey and Finley are visited by a respiratory therapist, a gastroenterologist, a nutritionist, a pharmacist, a physiotherapist and a social worker.

Beads of courage are proudly earned and worn by both children as a reward for their long days at the hospital, and their parents speak highly of the care they receive.

Libbey and Finley have daily regimens of respiratory therapy and physiotherapy. While it’s not something they enjoy, it’s simply part of their day. They eat high-calorie foods and take special vitamins and digestive enzymes to maximize the nutrients retained by their bodies.

“We’ve been extremely lucky,” Jenny says.

“There’s a huge, huge range of how kids can do, and after a rough start with Libbey, both Libbey and Finley are doing well.”

All three Wilmot children are active and happy, thanks to the supportive and positive atmosphere in their home. The kids and their parents have big dreams for the future along with appreciation for each day.

Finley is a robust little guy with dimples on his chubby cheeks who is heading to preschool next year. Libbey is a beautiful young lady with a bright smile. She has a keen interest in monkeys, sports and art. Edison has tons of energy and loves one-on-one time with his parents.

Looking at their family photo you would never know that two of the three children are afflicted with a serious disease.

What I learned at school today

By Shannon Robin I took a trip out to Brocket last week, intending to learn more about the recent Treaty 7 science fair, and wound up spending a few hours seeing first-hand some of the positive things going on at Napi’s Playground Elementary School and Piikani Nation Secondary School.

Kindergarten teacher Sue LeongNeumann gave me a guided tour that included meeting many students and staff, and gave me insight into ways the Blackfoot culture is being maintained at the schools.

The science fair was a big deal, with 58 projects entered by Treaty 7 students from Grades 4 to 7. The University of Lethbridge was involved, and this is the second year the event was held in Brocket. There were unique ideas mixed in with traditional projects, and others focusing on things significant to First Nations. Two local groups came away with top honours for their grade and science equipment for their school.

The Grade 6 group of Mercadies Bastien, Josh Big Sorrel Horse, Alina Crow, Dulton Crow Eagle and Riley North Peigan won first place for their Crazy Crystals project. Alina says the project was “really fun,” and Josh thought they’d get second place because there was another student with “an awesome gecko display.”

Tori Potts and Rosebud White Cow worked with a few other Grade 8 students to create a project showing how glaciers shaped our landscape. They described their display as realistic, with mountains and marine areas that took a full school week to put together.

The main feature was a large piece of ice with rocks frozen inside, which fell down and changed the terrain as the ice melted.

Our next stop was Mark Anderson’s classroom, where I learned about the Piikani Princess pageant. This long-standing school tradition is separate from the community pageant. The girls earn points for fundraising, a report from their teachers, a personal interview, their chosen talent, traditional dance and a speech.

The program ran over an extended time frame this year to include enrichment activities to help the girls gain confidence. “It’s a really good experience for all of the girls,” Mark says. “They build camaraderie and can be happy for everyone whether they win or not.”

The final stages of the competition will be held May 10, and young ladies in four age categories will earn beautiful hand-beaded crowns, medallions and a year-long reign for their efforts.

As we walked toward the gym, Sue pointed out the winter count that William Big Bull recently painted around the upper area of the rotunda. “It shows the history of the Blackfoot people and is part of making the school look like a native school,” she says.

principal Rudy Schuh about coming events like the bike rodeo, Mother’s Day tea and culture week. There might even be a celebrity coming to visit in the near future. “It’s a busy place,” he said, before heading back to the gym which was bustling in preparation for a pep rally.

Jody Scott, coach of the junior girls’ basketball team, was excited to share what was unfolding in the gym. Both the junior boys’ and junior girls’ basketball teams had received championship banners from the Treaty 7 tournament and it was time to raise them.

“They look forward to this extra tournament all year,” she says. “It’s pretty competitive and they played their hearts out.” After the banners were raised, the teachers challenged the students on the court.

Down the hallway we could hear drumming and singing, so we popped into a classroom where Jaron Weasel Bear related musical art to rites of passage. “It makes you feel really good, and it’s good stress relief to bang on a drum,” he says, while pointing out that the boys are taught to respect the drum for the life sacrificed to create it.

Jeanne Davis explained her work with rites of passage, reviving ceremonies, involving elders and teaching protocol and respect.

“The culture, language, history and legacy need to be maintained, and our teachers are very committed to our culture,” she says.

Sylvia Yellow Face and Joanne Yellow Horn are in charge of a troupe of dancers who recently attended Dance in My Shoes, a multicultural showcase held in Medicine Hat. The group includes 13 girls and six boys who learn and practise traditional dances.

“It’s amazing how much we do,” Sue says.

That pretty much sums up a morning spent at her school!

St. Mike’s Reflections

By Brad Quarin Grade 12 students of St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek will mark their upcoming high school graduation this Friday and Saturday, and are fairly calm about it.

“We’re pretty relaxed about grad,” says student Catherine DeCock. Another Grade 12 student, Charissa Morgan, agrees, saying the class is “pretty laid back about grad.”

But don’t get them wrong. “I’m excited,” Charissa says. “It’s coming really fast. I’m excited to graduate and go on with life.”

“That’s what everybody’s feeling just about now,” Catherine adds.

Charissa says the grads are “all really good friends.”

Many of them have been going to school together since kindergarten. “We’re sort of like a family, we’re all pretty close.”

As a group, Catherine says, the grads are quite athletic. She says she plays “basically everything,” including basketball, rugby and badminton.

The girls’ basketball team placed first in their league and the boys’ team placed second in their tournament, Catherine says. “That was pretty cool.” She also feels their cross-country running team is “pretty strong.”

Because many in the class are interested in sports, gym teacher Tyler Speelman will be a speaker at the ceremony. He knows the grads well.

The valedictorian, Elise Wocknitz, plays “pretty much every school sport,” Catherine says. But Elise also takes part in student council and was chosen as valedictorian for having the highest average on her report card, “so she’s a pretty well-rounded person.”

Charissa doesn’t play sports, but concentrates on schoolwork, with her top subjects being English, social studies and math.

Catherine and Charissa have been involved in planning grad, as have the other Grade 12 students. “There’s no one that’s really the main person,” Catherine says.

“Everyone just does little things.”

The two girls have been in charge of invitations and will help choose the music, after asking the class what they want to hear. They will also help decorate.

The graduation ceremony will be at the school gym, rather than at the Community Hall like last year. It’s a cost-saving measure, since the grad class isn’t large, and fitting because of their love of sports.

On Friday, there will be a Catholic mass, followed by the ceremony and banquet on Saturday. “The Hutterites are catering for us, so it should be really good, no matter what it is,” Catherine says.

There’s no real theme to the St. Michael’s grad, and they’ll keep it simple. “It’s not going to be super-duper fancy, but it’ll be classy and nice,” Catherine says.

Looking back at their high school years, Charissa identifies the fun field trips as a highlight. In Grade 10, the class went to Calgary to visit religious sites, including churches, a mosque, a synagogue and a Buddhist temple, Catherine says.

Looking forward, Catherine says she’s been accepted to St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, reflecting her desire to travel to new places. She’ll be studying nursing for four years, so she can help people and go to other countries.

Charissa doesn’t have anything definite planned, but wants to be a dental assistant or dental hygienist. “I just think teeth are really interesting, and they did a lot of work on my teeth, so, kind of pretty cool, the stuff they do,” she says.

“Edison walks every year, hard, to help me and Fin with CF,” Libbey says. “It feels like I have someone by my side to keep me company and it’s like I’m not the only one with CF in this family.”

For a long time, Libbey thought she was the only one in Alberta with CF, and that everyone else was at the children’s hospital for other things. A support group for children would be a great thing, but this is an isolating disease – children with CF are encouraged not to have contact with each other because exposure between people with the disease increases their risk of infection.

Libbey is old enough to research CF on her own now. While questions about her mortality are heartbreaking for her parents, their positive outlook and honesty are admirable. “She’s very insightful about other kids, especially the ones who aren’t healthy, and she has a very mature outlook,” Jenny says.

“We plan for a strong, long future – that’s what hope is about.”

Bill and Jenny’s attitude defines their family. They don’t do any more or less because of CF, they simply do it in their own way with a suitcase full of medications in tow. “It’s just part of our life, Jenny says. “When we go camping we bring a generator to run the nebulizer.”

Research and funding of CF treatments have made a huge difference for those living with the disease. According to Cystic Fibrosis Canada, half of all Canadians with CF are now expected to live into their 40s and beyond.

CFC also funds the clinics providing outstanding care to Libbey, Finley and other CF patients across Canada.

Thanks to results of a study funded by CFC and Kin Canada, most provinces now test every baby born for CF. Alberta was the first province to implement the practice in 2007. Early diagnosis gives a baby with CF a chance to thrive, and makes a difference with regard to life expectancy.

Donations through the Great Strides walk support advances like this.

Patients using a relatively new drug called Kalydeco have shown improved lung function, lower sweat chloride levels, and weight gain snest owpill in pas by simply taking two pills a day. People already have access to rthe the United States and Europe, but in Canada the medication would cost $300,000 per year. If lobbying to have the cost of the drug covered is successful, it may help about four percent of the CF population in Canada.

While this drug isn’t being used for the genetic mutation affecting Libbey and Finley, advances like this give their parents hope and the determination to keep their kids healthy until something is found that will help them.

Volunteers pitch in and clean up

Individuals and groups have been volunteering with local cleanup efforts this spring.

A small group gathered in Blairmore on April 25 to tidy the town. This initiative was coordinated by the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass.

You may recall a blizzard sweeping in during the Highway Cleanup Event last year. Volunteers were grateful that wasn’t the case on Saturday and enjoyed a warm, spring day.

Many organizations take part in this provincial initiative as a significant fundraising activity.

Members of the Chinook Multi 4-H Club were tired after a few hours of picking up trash in the ditches, but still had smiles on their faces as they neared the end of their shift. Their club members and parents put in about 100 hours of time cleaning a winter’s worth of trash from the ditches near Pincher Creek.

The Crowsnest/Pincher Creek Landfill Association www.crowsnestpincherlandfill.com Potential Programs for Your Landfill Numerous changes have occurred in the last three years to this facility. We are no longer the small municipal landfill we were some 30 years ago. The facility has seen enormous growth and expansion along with an ever-increasing customer base. The operation of this site has expanded to meet, or exceed, governmental regulations and guidelines.

Continued efforts are being made to promote reuse and recycling of household and commercial waste streams. Here are but a few of those impending programs: • Electronics recycling with an opportunity to expand to smaller household appliances.

• Farm and ranch agricultural plastics such as baler twine and silage bags.

• Clean wood grinding and reintroduction to mulch and bedding for animals.

• Tire collection and recycling.

• Used engine oil recycled and used for heating shops and buildings at the landfill.

Access Your landfill has just recently partnered with the Municipal District of Pincher Creek to have the road to our site paved. This joint venture has seen a cleaner and safer roadway to the facility. Our commitment to this project provides 75% of the funds over a longterm debenture.

Future Plans Over the past few years, management has been working on new programs that will further reduce what we put into the landfill. Preliminary plans are in place and being evaluated.

• Discussion with incinerator manufacturers that could lead to reducing what we landfill by 30% and also provide an alternative to the way we currently handle dead stock and wild animal roadkill carcasses. This could provide a long-awaited solution for our southern ranchers’ problem in disposing of beef carcasses.

• Preliminary plans and architectural drawings have been commissioned for a new recycling and reuse centre at the landfill. This building would provide additional capacity to recycle paper, plastic, cardboard and household metal containers. The program would work in conjunction with our current local recyclers, increasing the volume our region could recycle.

• Enhanced services within this facility would also include fluorescent bulb recycling, propane tank evacuation and disposal, freon retrieval, sorting and distribution of bicycle parts.

We continue to look for innovative ways to reduce our environmental footprint and give our residents a quality service for years to come.

Environmental Science and Technology Scholarship Application Criteria: • Must be a graduate of an area high school – Crowsnest Consolidated High School, Livingstone School, Matthew Halton High School or St. Michael’s School.

• Date of scholarship application must NOT be longer than two years following date of graduation.

• Confirmation of enrolment/registration in the post-secondary course of study.

• Demonstrate leadership and/or contributions to the community.

Application Process: 1. Complete all sections of the application.

2. Include a letter of recommendation from your high school or the post-secondary institution, if you are already enrolled.

3. Include a statement of personal communityrelated activities.

4. Include a statement of why you are pursuing a career in environmental science and technology.

A Regional Recycling and Waste Disposal Facility CNPC Landfill provides waste handling and recycling services to its members.

These services include: • Municipal solid waste handling and disposal.

• Yard debris.

• Construction and demolition.

• Recycling of electronics, tires, batteries, metal, used oil and filters, and household hazardous material.

• Minimal space is available for reusable items that can be dropped off and offered to others.

• Industrial waste materials such as contaminated soil, asbestos, sewage sludge.

CNPC Landfill also provides support and promotion to local groups through the following: • High school scholarship program for all four local high schools. $1,000 per school per year is available.

• Elementary school field trips to our site. A guided tour emphasizes the need for waste reduction and protection of our environment.

• Partnerships with local non-profit charities and youth groups to provide fundraising opportunities.

SERVICE PLUS PROGRAM is being introduced to encourage a cleaner community. This service will provide each community with equipment and landfill staff to assist in removing unwanted household items from residential properties.

2013 Service Plus Schedule to date: • May 15 – Town of Lundbreck - bin location TBA, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• May 27 – Beaver Mines - bin location TBA, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• June 14, 15 – Town of Pincher Creek - bin at Ranchland Mall parking lot, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• June 21, 22 – Crowsnest Pass - bin at MDM Centre, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Other Service Plus sites will be announced as they are confirmed. Please check with your local public works department for more dates.

WHAT YOU CAN BRING TO THE LANDFILL E-WASTE – Televisions, computers, monitors, printers, laptops, keyboards, speakers, mice. (All other electronics go to the landfill.)

USED OIL AND ANTIFREEZE – Used motor oil MUST NOT contain any foreign substances. Please leave lids and caps on containers when leaving them in the bins.

USED OIL FILTERS – In filter drums.

BATTERY SHED –Dead vehicle batteries, rechargeable batteries are recyclable. Batteries from power tools, etc., can be disposed of here.

METAL – Washers, dryers, stoves, bicycles, barbecues, pipe, culverts, farm equipment, automobile hulks – all fluids must be drained, tires, gas tank and battery removed. Only barrels that have been opened up on one end and purged will be accepted. Wire and cable must be separated.

REFRIGERATORS – There is a $20 charge for refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and anything that contains freon.

PROPANE TANKS HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTES PAINT – Paint cans (empty or full), spray cans, paint-related products (thinners, etc.).

CHEMICAL SHED – Pesticide and herbicide containers (triple rinsed and cut).

DOMESTIC GARBAGE – Food waste, furniture, paper, cardboard, plastics, silage bags, small kitchen appliances, glass, ceramics, ashes (cold), dead animals (except bovine), construction/demolition debris, untreated grain dust, asphalt shingles.

WOOD – Tree stumps, branches, timbers, boards, creosote or preserved wood.

PROHIBITED WASTES – The following wastes will not be accepted: liquids (including water), toxic hazardous waste, beef cattle carcasses.

Children and pets are not allowed out of the vehicles.

Citizen science leads to award nomination

By Brad Quarin Rob and Loretta Schaufele of Crowsnest Pass have a variety of feelings about the project they’re working on, Road Watch in the Pass, being nominated in Alberta’s environmentalist Emerald Awards.

“It’s humbling, we’re excited, we were very surprised,” Loretta says. “It’s important to us, and we feel it’s really important for the community as well.”

“It’s giving us some provincial exposure, and we’re hoping that from that, we can generate some more interest and support for what we’re doing here.”

Road Watch in the Pass is a project of the Miistakis Institute, associated with the University of Calgary.

Rob describes the project as “citizen science,” in which the public can help by reporting the wildlife crossings and roadkill they see on Highway 3 to the Road Watch website.

All of that information identifies major areas for animal crossings, and supports calls for the development of highway crossing mitigation sites – overpasses or bridges for use by animals, or underpasses or tunnels for vehicles.

Mitigation also involves fencing along parts of the highway.

If the idea of animals using human-made bridges sounds laughable, that was also the reaction when these methods were tried out in Banff, but they worked.

“It helps keep people safe from vehiclewildlife collisions, and it helps keep the wildlife safe,” Loretta says.

The project has been running since 2004, and up to last year 5,000 sightings had been reported, Rob says.

He and Loretta have volunteered since the beginning, and the married couple feel they’re a good team. Rob has a B.Sc. in zoology, while Loretta is a counsellor, which she feels is useful for dealing with the social-science side of a project studying human travel.

For Loretta, the project is worth working on for free. “We felt like this is such an important local and wildlife activity issue for North America. Crowsnest Pass is such a pivotal spot,” she says. “We thought, we’re not prepared to walk away just because we’re not getting paid.”

Recently, Rob and Loretta’s work on the project has centred on education. Many people don’t think of what road ecology is, Loretta says, so they explain the concept to the community. However, they feel the community is sufficiently aware of Road Watch in the Pass itself.

“A lot of people are aware of it and contribute to it and are supporters of it,” Rob says. The Emerald Award nomination ought to lead to even more awareness.

The Emerald Awards are given out for “environmental excellence” by the Alberta Emerald Foundation, which is supported partly by the provincial government. The 22nd annual awards will be given out June 6 in Edmonton.

Currently, Road Watch in the Pass is the only contender for the community group award, but that doesn’t mean they will definitely receive the honour. Still, Rob likes their odds.

“We’ll just have to wait and see.”

They’re not letting their sole contender status go to their head. “Rob and I are sure that there are other very qualified people that were deserving of being nominated,” Loretta says.

“That’s why we’re like, ‘Wow.’ ” Whether they win or not, the couple will be at the Edmonton Citadel on June 6 for the celebration. “It’s a little nerve-racking,” Loretta says, “but we were happy just doing what we’re doing, and then to get nominated was great.”

Previously, the project received a Stockholm Challenge Award for its mapping tool, Rob says.

The Alberta Youth Entrepreneurship Camp (AYEC) will celebrate 17 years of youth entrepreneurial spirit in southern Alberta this summer.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2013 AYEC, and if you are between 13 and 15 and have an interest in business then this is the perfect camp for you! Youth will compete in an essay competition which will allow them to attend the camp for free, thanks to the generous support of the camp’s community sponsors. Sixty youth from southern and central Alberta will attend the camp, running Aug. 18 to 24 at Eagles Nest Ranch in Cypress Hills, Alta.

This one-week camp combines the entrepreneurial training with a summer camp atmosphere.

Campers hear from guest speakers and participate in workshops to learn the components of a business plan, such as marketing, advertising, cash flow and record keeping. Teams plan a business idea, meet with suppliers and bankers, build a product or a service, and on the final day of camp these youthful business ventures are open for business. Campers pay back their business loans and split their profits amongst their team.

It’s not only about numbers and business plans, though! These youth get to participate in a variety of summer camp experiences and recreational activities. Zipline, horseback riding, wall climbing, mountain biking and swimming are just a few examples.

Gardening group takes root in Lundbreck

By Brad Quarin When Monica Zwikstra moved to Lundbreck from St. Albert in 2005, she found something was missing that other communities she’d lived in had: a garden club.

Believing Lundbreck is a nice place to live and should look like one, she has started a new volunteer group called the Lundbreck Gardeners.

“It’s just getting off the ground,” she says.

After posters went up seeking anyone interested in gardening, the group got together for the first time in March.

The idea is to beautify the former mining community, which Monica feels could be brightened by gardens and flowers. A similar volunteer group, the Pincher Planters, has been active in Pincher Creek since 1997 and has received the Spirit of Pincher Creek Award.

Now, there are seven Lundbreck Gardeners.

“It’s a beginning,” Monica says. The group is mainly female, with some offers from men to do heavy work, but includes both seniors and younger people.

Currently, they are working on their first garden, with the goal of having several next year. With a borrowed Bobcat, they’ve dug up space provided by the community, and have also received dirt and manure from donors who prefer to remain anonymous. Monica thinks people in Lundbreck would feel embarrassed to be thanked.

With a hole in the ground, the group is now looking for donations of plants, work and money. They’ll take as many plants as possible, as a young lady has offered her garden bed as a holding pen in case there’s no room for them yet in community gardens. Money helps, as there will always be expenses for the group.

ished by the end of June, but will continue to take donations well after that. “When we finish with this project, we’ll start another project,” she says.

Like the Pincher Planters, Monica also wants the Lundbreck Gardeners to put up flower pots around town.

A former janitor at Livingstone School, Monica enjoys gardening and has been doing it for most of her life. She’s belonged to garden clubs in other communities, and says it’s rewarding and “therapeutic to go out and get dirty.”

Monica appeals to anyone who loves gardening, or wants to learn, to come and join the Lundbreck Gardeners. Members can have a variety of interests, including trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials. There is currently no membership fee required.

Boys cook with competitive spirit

By Brad Quarin For a while, Caelan Taylor of Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek couldn’t believe that he had triumphed in a regional culinary competition and was bound for the provincials.

“It’s kind of setting in now,” the Grade 11 student says. He received a gold medal from the non-profit organization Skills Canada at Lethbridge College for a two-course meal he prepared with Grade 9 student Cora Bruder. Cora is too young to go with him to the provincials at the Edmonton Expo Centre in mid-May. Another Matthew Halton student, Alex Oliver, won a silver medal for baking in the same regional competition and will also be at the provincials. “I feel really good about it,” says Alex, who’s in Grade 12. “It was all good compliments.”

Alex and Caelan have been competing within Skills Canada since last year, but their experience with cooking goes back further than that.

Since he was four, Caelan has helped his family in the kitchen, “playing around” and making smiley faces with ketchup. “I just enjoy it,” he says, as it’s a challenge and eating the food is rewarding.

In Grade 7, Alex was placed in the foods class.

“I was just put in there,” he says, but for the last three years he has stuck with it by choice. “It’s really relaxing to bake.”

“He tries to better himself all the time,” says high school foods teacher Ian Robertson.

suggested the students try out Skills Canada, which holds competitions in a number of trades and technologies. “She thought I’d be good at it,” Alex recalls.

“I enjoy competing and seeing how I compare against others,” Caelan says.

In their first shot at Skills Canada, Caelan placed third in the regionals and earned bronze in the provincials, and Alex placed fourth in regionals.

Now, the two students are learning from Ian, who’s a professional chef. “You have to be very critical of their food,” Ian says, noting the cuts of food and the amount of waste produced count.

Caelan and Alex won’t say if that drives them crazy!

The two students are back in Skills Canada.

“That was your goal from the start of the year,” Ian says to Alex.

In the Lethbridge competition for southwestern Alberta in April, Alex baked up a storm of buns, two dozen cookies, a layered cake, six éclairs and more in four hours.

Meanwhile, Cora and Caelan produced a meal consisting of chicken breast, gnocchi and mushroom soup, made from scratch as opposed to using a can of Campbell’s. The meal required taking the bones out of two whole chickens.

Both Alex and Caelan say they’re excited about making it to provincials. “I can’t wait,” Caelan says. “I bet the pressure will probably set in the

week before.” For now, though, he’s happy to be practising.

They say they get congratulations and good wishes from other students and staff. One teacher who’s particularly proud is Ian. “For a first year teacher, I feel pretty happy that we’re doing so well,” he says. He’ll be at the competition to support his students as a “proud daddy” with “high hopes.”

After high school, Caelan would like to continue studying cooking at SAIT as a stepping stone to hotel management. He sees cooking as a passion rather than a permanent career.

For Alex, cooking as a career is a backup plan, with his preference being archeology and anthropology. He wants to take a year off and then go to the University of Saskatchewan.

Emergency Preparedness Week activities This is Emergency Preparedness Week, and activities in our area will be held on Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Join us on Police Avenue in Pincher Creek, between 7-Eleven and the Provincial Building, for demonstrations of emergency equipment, fun activities, information and a chance to chat with emergency responders from our area. There will be displays by our local emergency organizations.

Sobeys and Pincher Meats and Deli have generously donated supplies for a barbecue lunch, grilled by Citizens on Patrol members.

At noon, Pincher Creek Emergency Services and the Cowley Fire Department will test the emergency alert sirens located in the firehalls at Pincher Creek, Cowley and Lundbreck. This is a test only, but in the event of an actual disaster, the sirens would be used to garner attention and volunteers.

The sirens have not been used for a number of years, but the Pincher Creek Community Emergency Management Agency sees that they could be an effective tool to alert our communities to an emergency. If requested, the sirens will be used to put out a single, continuous tone. This tone will last for one minute. If more

than one tone is requested, the next tone will be five minutes after the previous one, again for one minute.

The sirens may be sounded for a number of different reasons, such as: help is required in filling sandbags; an evacuation is occurring due to some event; a major fire requiring evacuation is occurring; other volunteer help is needed.

When you hear the siren, there is an ongoing emergency event and you should check for information on what to do: * Check Alberta Emergency Alert’s website at emergencyalert.alberta.ca . * A dedicated phone line has been set up to release information to the public during emergency events at 1-855-627-5365. * Tune to local radio stations for news updates.

Emergency Preparedness Week encourages Canadians to be prepared to cope on their own for at least the first 72 hours of an emergency, while rescue workers help those in urgent need. Visit www.GetPrepared.ca for resources to help you and your family prepare for all types of emergencies.

What’s in your emergency kit?

Experience has shown that individual preparedness goes a long way to help people cope better, both during and after a major disaster. Get an emergency kit now – it can make a world of difference.

All families should have two emergency kits: a ready-to-stay kit and a ready-to-go kit. These kits will help you survive 72 hours,

whether you stay in your home or need to evacuate. Replace food and water annually.

Ready-to-stay kit should include: two litres of drinking water per person per day, food that won’t spoil (canned, dried, energy bars), manual can opener, flashlight and batteries, first-aid kit (and prescription medication, infant supplies), extra keys to house and car, cash in smaller bills, copy of emergency plan and contact information, pet supplies, candles and matches, change of clothing and footwear, garbage bags, toilet paper, toiletries, blankets and basic tools.

Ready-to-go kit should include: one gallon of water per person, non-perishable food, manual can

opener, disposable dishes and utensils, flashlight and batteries, radio and batteries, change of clothes and footwear, infant supplies, personal identification card, emergency contact information of someone who lives outside your area, pet supplies, first-aid kit, toiletries. Store items in a duffle bag near an exit. Store regularly-used medications near your kit.

What I learned at school today

Rosebud White Cow, left, and Tori Potts were winners in the Treaty 7 science fair held recently. Their project on glaciers and how they shape the land won first place in the Grade 8 category. The large display included mountains, rivers, drummonds, eskers and a large chunk of ice with rocks frozen inside to represent the glaciers. The girls earned tickets to the science centre in Calgary and $250 worth of science supplies for their classroom.
