My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin It’s been an exciting challenge to put together the keepsake grad sections this month. We’ve received significant positive feedback and are glad the effort is appreciated.

This week’s edition includes the 2013 graduating class from Crowsnest Consolidated High School. A few have questioned why we didn’t run their photos last week, and that answer is a simple one. I felt each school deserved to have the centre spread of the paper, and with two grads on the same weekend, it made sense to pair the smaller school with the Mother’s Day issue to do this.

I hadn’t thought much about graduation for a few years, but this process has brought on some serious reminiscing.

Today I pulled out my albums, one from my 1986 graduation and the other from our 11-year class reunion.

The grad photos are faded, but my red gown still stands out in the class photo of 103 students.

I remember a big shopping day with my friend Kim. We tried on gown after gown in search of one to suit us each perfectly. Then there were hairstyle days and photo sessions in advance of the big day. There was so much anticipation!

Grad day itself is a blurry memory because it zipped by so fast. We moved back and forth between two locations for the formal ceremony, a dinner, a family dance and then the all-night party with two live bands.

This was the only time I danced with my grandfather, which in itself is a special memory.

It was also the first time I blew into a breathalyzer machine. We all did, as we left in the morning.

Our parents, and the police, knew the party was moving to a nearby lake, and this was a wise precaution taken by our local RCMP. The lake party was fun, and most of us stayed out of trouble. As with any group, there were a few who paid for choosing not to toe the line, but overall we were pretty well behaved.

Monday morning we were loaded on a school bus for a field trip. The wrong bus was sent, and we were crammed, three to a seat, for a five-hour round trip on a day when temperatures soared

above 30 degrees.

It’s a time I look back on with fondness. I can laugh now at how naive some of us were and how determined others were. Some already knew their path way back then, while others are still searching.

I know only a few of the local grads this year, but I know they’re looking forward to spreading their wings and stepping up to the plate as adults.

Dreams are such an important part of this time in life. I encourage every graduate to dream big and to follow your heart – you’ll find what’s right for you, even if you’re not yet sure what it is.

Before you know it, you’ll be planning a 10-year class reunion – some will be parents, some will be married, some will have moved far away while others will make their lives here.

These are the words I wrote to my friends and classmates 27 years ago. I think the sentiment is still valid today.

Our graduation day has dawned We’re in tuxes, gowns and pearls The adults of tomorrow, Yesterday’s boys and girls.

We walk through flowered splendour, The reward of all the years Of hallways filled with laughter, Sorrow, joy and tears.

All of our expectations Of the things that we might do Lie within our own hands, We can make our dreams come true.

There’s nothing that can stop us, The future is all ours; So set your sights up high my friends And reach out for the stars.

We’ve accepted our diplomas With shiny, tear-laced eyes, For we know the time is coming To say those sad goodbyes.

But goodbyes aren’t forever Even when we are apart, We’ll always be together, Forever, in the heart.

The Breeze Mailbox C.N.P. watershed projects get a hand from Alberta Ecotrust In 2012, Alberta Ecotrust awarded Crowsnest Conservation Society a grant to facilitate its work with watershed monitoring and education. The grant provided funding for several components of CCS’s water conservation efforts.

Last summer, instructors from Living Lakes Canada’s streamkeeper program trained local volunteers in techniques to monitor the health of our watershed. This summer, the volunteers will select a stretch of river and begin collecting and analyzing water samples and recording data.

Funds from Alberta Ecotrust paid for the training and for materials for the monitoring kit the volunteers will use.

In 2011, CCS partnered with Alberta Conservation Association to bring the Alberta Volunteer Amphibian Monitoring Program to Crowsnest Pass. In July and August of that year, volunteers documented sites where they found amphibian tadpoles. While boreal toads were the target species, breeding sites for salamanders and Columbia spotted frogs were also recorded.

The amphibian monitoring program continued in 2012 with a greater number of volunteers, and will be repeated this summer. The program included field trips with the Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club. Funds from Alberta Ecotrust helped purchase two GPS units, new nets, collection jars and other materials used in the survey, and paid mileage costs to volunteers.

In 2012, CCS organized a series of meetings, bringing together a diverse group of individuals and conservation partners to discuss the health of the local watershed, voice concerns and educate themselves about possible next steps.

Organizations such as the Oldman Watershed Council and Cows and Fish participated in the meetings. Alberta Ecotrust funds were used to promote and advertise these meetings.

Alberta Ecotrust also paid for costs of the Crowsnest River watershed lecture series. In August 2012, Michael Wagner presented The Legacy of the 2003 Lost Creek Fire. At CCS’s annual general meeting in November 2012, Lorne Fitch presented Stumps, Sawdust and Sediment: A legacy of Logging in the Oldman Watershed?

On May 15, at 7 p.m. at Isabelle Sellon School in Blairmore, CCS board member Jim Rennie will present Riparian Restoration: A Successful Example, which focuses on a small, volunteerdriven riparian project on Dogpound Creek that started in 1986 and had immediate success. It ultimately led to a series of bigger projects by other groups along the creek valley. The restoration techniques used have relevance for potential projects in the Crowsnest Pass area.

Bob and Chad set to ride to help conquer cancer

By Brad Quarin Bob Wright of the Pincher Creek expects he’s going to be quite sore in June. He’s been road biking for three years, but never for a distance as great as 200 kilometres, which he plans to do here in southern Alberta on June 22 and 23.

“It’s great,” he says. Bob’s not doing this for his health or his entertainment, but as part of the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, the energy company’s fundraiser held throughout Canada and the U.S. This is Bob’s first year taking the ride, in which he commits to raising $2,500. He heard of the fundraiser while biking with Chad Kuzyk, who’s a technology co-ordinator for Livingstone Range schools and is doing the ride for a second year. Chad and Bob are two local participants among about 2,000 in the province.

The idea sounded good to Bob, an RCMP officer. “I enjoy being a civil servant, I enjoy serving my community, I enjoy serving my country,” he says.

He has, in fact, served in Afghanistan and done some community work, which earned him a Diamond Jubilee Medal.

But he has more personal reasons for taking on the ride as well. His father-in-law, Richard Anderson, lost his fight with cancer. Bob saw him struggle and thought the support systems made possible by volunteers were “just incredible.”

“I thought it would be a great opportunity to give back,” Bob says of his upcoming ride.

Richard Anderson passed away in August 2012. Bob says they were close and the loss was hard on his wife and her siblings, for whom Richard was “front and centre” at family gatherings. “It’s a real adjustment and shock to the family,” he says.

Chad got started for similar reasons. A friend, Ian Van Seters of Coaldale, passed away with cancer at the early age of 37. Ian participated in the Enbridge Ride before he was diagnosed with the disease and, after he died, a group of people in the area decided to carry on his work. That group is called the Cure Crew, Chad says.

Since committing to raise $2,500, Bob and Ian have been seeking community support for their rides. “It’s a little bit of a stress, knowing that if you can’t raise the funds, you’re donating the money yourself,” Bob says. To avoid that hit to his wallet, he says he’s been “nickel and diming” family, friends and co-workers and has appealed to local businesses for help.

been touched by cancer. “You really don’t have to go into too much depth in your own struggles and your own experiences, because for the most part people know,” he says. “I’ve just had to approach people and tell them what I’m doing.”

So far, he estimates he’s raised $1,700. The Legion made a substantial donation and The Grill Restaurant and Alberta Hotel and Liquor Store have contributed. He’s hoping to attract more attention to his cause as he’s entering his last weeks of raising funds. “I’m cautiously optimistic,” he says, feeling Pincher Creek is a community that usually supports volunteers. “I’ve got my hopes set high.”

Similarly, Chad says he’s about 70 per cent of the way to his $2,500 goal, collecting donations from family and friends around the region and in Toronto. He’s found the fundraising aspect to be less difficult this year than last, calling the people of the community generous. He appreciates their help.

George Dowson is an exemplary senior

By Brad Quarin There could be a number of reasons why members of Lundbreck’s Windsor Heritage Drop-In Centre, a place for seniors’ recreation, bestowed the honour of senior citizen of the year to George Dowson.

It could be because of his distinguished work for the Lundbreck Citizens Council, Cornfest, the Cowley Lions, local sports or the Lundbreck Community Playground Project. It could be due to his work for the drop-in centre itself, which he supported from the beginning. It could be all of the above.

“I try to volunteer my time as much as possible,” George says.

“He enjoys keeping busy in his retirement and helping out wherever he can,” says his wife, Robyn.

“He’s like a dad to everyone,” says the recipient of Lundbreck’s citizen of the year award, Anne Molnar. “Anytime you need anything, he’s there.”

Currently, he’s serving as treasurer of Lundbreck Citizens Council, a volunteer group formed in 2004 to save Lundbreck Community Hall.

“I thought it needed quite a bit of tender love and care,” George says.

He became chairman of the group and raised money through casinos to renovate the building, which is now being used by the town.

But the group does more than look after the hall, receiving the hamlet’s concerns and reporting to the municipal district. They organize the spring cleanup and achieved a bylaw dealing with roaming dogs.

The citizens council also handles Cornfest, an annual day of fun for Lundbreck. Cornfest was already running when George came to the hamlet from Crowsnest Pass in 1982, and now he plays an organizational role.

The day often involves baseball games, horseshoes, a concession and other children’s activities. Last year they had a pig roast.

One memorable Cornfest that George took part in was in 2007, when they marked the centennial of the town with a parade and carriage rides.

“We had a real good response,” he says, as many people who had left Lundbreck returned for a reunion. They also worked hard to get the walls of the drop-in centre done for the event. “It turned out really, really well.”

This year, Cornfest will fall on Aug. 24, and they’re planning another parade, a 50-50 raffle, and the selling of pins to raise funds for the hall.

Outside the Lundbreck Citizens Council, George belongs to the strong Cowley Lions Club. “I like the Lions because they’re the one organization I think that are willing to help anything,” he says.

One of their activities which he helps plan is the dog walk fundraiser for guide dogs for the blind and disabled. Participants get pledges from local merchants, including Pincher Creek’s Wal-Mart, Sobeys and Co-op.

He also convinced his fellow Lions to give a $1,000 cheque to another group he’s involved in, the Lundbreck Community Playground Project.

“I’m their old fellow,” George says, explaining his involvement in the playground project. The group is looking for grants to improve the playground for the enjoyment of kids and the elderly.

One thing George has enjoyed himself is sports, as he managed minor hockey in Bellevue, Crowsnest Pass and Sparwood. Because his son liked

baseball, George helped give Lundbreck a high school baseball team while Robyn secured a grant to fence off the baseball field.

He’s received awards before, but not senior citizen of the year until this year. The president of the drop-in centre, Ted Smith, presented the award to George at the volunteer luncheon in April.

George was surprised and appreciates the recognition, which was the result of a vote at the drop-in centre. “It means a great deal,” he says.

“George is very deserving of the award,” Robyn says. She had learned of the win before he did because she’s the one who engraved the plaque. “I had to do a lot of lying during the course of finding out he won and when he got it.”

While George received the plaque, he thinks Robyn deserves more credit for it than simply being the engraver. “She’s not a senior, otherwise she should be sharing it with me,” he says. “My wife’s a great inspiration for me. We kind of work as a team.”

Anne Molnar agrees they’re a team. “They back each other up,” she says.

Robyn serves as secretary of the Lundbreck Citizens Council.

The awards aren’t stopping yet, because on June 1 George will be collecting a Distinguished Lion plaque at a dinner in Claresholm, Robyn says.

“I’m very proud of him and I’m certainly glad that organizations are recognizing all that he does and has done over the years.”

Congratulations, George. You’ve earned it.

A community member’s desire to heal Friends and neighbours of Crowsnest Pass – Every community can have its ups and downs. Ours has been on a rollercoaster ride for several decades.

If we were a person we would be categorized as a “character.” I have meagre credentials for the following, other than I grew up in Crowsnest Pass (and have the 1973 grad picture from CCHS), and I love the area and want to see us prosper. I know individuals on both sides of the issues we face so am not interested in taking sides nor am I campaigning for a side. I am calling for a healthy community, and the path is a harder one because it requires purposeful change, individual by individual, attitude by attitude.

The road to a healthy community is not via the next municipal election.

The problems cut deeper than just moving someone out and voting in “your” candidate. Deeper, because the positions of leadership have been dishonoured and poor attitudes have been encouraged publicly. I have seen this at public meetings and my heart has been grieved. I have talked with friends on both sides of the issues and have been disappointed by the rapid, spontaneous and systematic put-downs of individuals and processes. Many in our community are applying relational styles in personal conversations that they would never use with their children because they know it is devastating to their character.

So why perpetuate this in the public realm? Who in their right mind would stand for election? It is said that it takes a community to raise a child.

If that is true, then our community pattern is being perpetuated through community attitudes and practices such as gossip, negative criticism and the expression of ill will to each other. Mistakes – whether they are real or perceived – need to be addressed through a process of reconciliation. Teaching our children through admitting that one has made a mistake is part of maturing and our children need to see this. Along with admission of a mistake is the hard task of asking for forgiveness with meaningful statements like “I am sorry.” Then comes the harder task of accepting forgiveness, saying “I forgive you” and then moving forward in renewed relationship, determined to face the challenges of our community.

The need to reconcile our differences is paramount if we are to break from the patterns demonstrated in our community and being passed on to younger generations. Who will go first to try for real change and healing in our community? Perhaps a councillor? Perhaps someone who has been highly critical could step forward with a public apology? I don’t know, this is just a thought, but I for one want to see our next election completed with malice towards no one, with individuals running who have a soft heart towards both sides of the issues but are driven by a strong desire to review the issues and do the right thing in each situation, assessing for themselves the facts, and drawing sound conclusions. People motivated not by revenge, peer pressure or single-minded viewpoints, but by the desire to improve our lot through discerning insight and rational choices.

I am for a truly healthy community, and propose that as a community we need to move forward with a process of healing. How should we proceed?

The sky’s the limit for CCHS grads

ATB Financial is fundraising for children’s hospitals this month

By Brad Quarin You may have noticed a large and friendly bear hanging out at your local ATB Financial branch this month.

“Everybody wants that big teddy bear,” says Linda Petrone, Blairmore ATB’s manager.

Everybody has a chance to take him home, for only $2, with the money collected going to children’s hospitals in Alberta.

With Teddy for a Toonie, $2 gets you into a draw for the custommade teddy, which Linda calls “a fairly large bear” from the Bearington Collection. You can also donate cash or get rid of the last of your pennies.

ATB has been doing this across the province every May since 2000.

Linda is in charge of raising awareness of and support for the program, through advertising, posters and word of mouth.

Pincher Creek’s ATB is also involved, with all proceeds going to the pediatric critical care transport team for the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary, organizer Caitlyn Pickard says. The branch is holding other fundraisers for the cause as well.

They held a chili cook-off on Friday, and have plans for a bake sale this Thursday and Friday and a silent auction for donated items all month. On May 29 they’re also having a walkathon, says Sheena Van Oyen of Pincher Creek’s ATB, with the staff raising funds. In addition to the big bear, there are little ones that can be purchased for $15, and chocolate teddy bears for $2.

While Teddy for a Toonie is done across the province, local branches are happy to take part and help children. “They’re our future,” Linda says, and she feels everyone has some connection to the children’s hospital.

“I’ve known a ton of people who have had their children in there,” Sheena says. “My sister’s been in there, and I have kids of my own and hopefully they never have to go there.”

“I’m really happy about the community and all their willingness to help and donate to the cause,” she adds. In addition to businesses, individuals have been stepping forward to lend a hand. “That’s a good surprise.”

ATB has raised over $5 million from Teddy for a Toonie over the last 14 years, Caitlyn says. This year, ATB wants to raise $800,000 for the Calgary hospital and Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.

Caitlyn says the Pincher Creek branch’s goal is $3,500. The Blairmore ATB just wants to raise as much cash as possible, Linda says.

Teddy for a Toonie runs for all of May. Get that bear!

By Brad Quarin “It seems like we just started Grade 12,” Crowsnest Consolidated High School student Jordyn Appleby remarks.

Jordyn was among 46 students who celebrated their upcoming high school graduation on Friday with a banquet and ceremony.

“It’s going to be weird to say goodbye, but I think we’ve learned a lot as a grad class, together,” says valedictorian Allison Farfus. “We’ll be prepared for the rest of our lives.”

Jordyn, Allison, Cody Strandquist and Ty Tracey are all soon-to-be graduates who got involved in the grad executive to make the event successful, Allison says.

“We wanted to include a whole variety of people that would each give their own opinion, to make sure the grad is what everyone wants,” Jordyn adds.

Ty was the entertainment co-ordinator, arranging the singers and student awards, while Cody ran the bottle drive. Allison served as treasurer, and Jordyn was president, designing the hoodies and picking the quote.

With the theme being The Sky’s the Limit, they decorated with sky colours and lights designed to look like stars.

Cody describes the 2013 grad class as drama-free. “We get along really well for a graduating class,” Jordyn says.

“We’ve all been really close,” Allison says, with many of the students knowing each other since kindergarten.

The group can be described as “a mix,” Ty says. However, they do lean towards hockey.

They’re also “pretty academic,” Jordyn feels. “Girls are, anyways,” Allison replies. They say the girls make up the majority of the class and it’s always been that way.

The grad execs designed the event to be beautiful, fun and memorable.

“We’re switching it up from the previous years,” Ty says. They planned supper and speeches, followed by the ceremony.

The guest speaker was retired teacher David Liddell, selected by the students as a favourite and memorable teacher.

The class’s high school years have been eventful, with a trip to France and Spain last year in April being a highlight. “That was awesome,” says Cody. They saw the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre.

“My whole high school years were pretty great, and it was nice to spend them in a small town with a group that we all know really well,” Jordyn says.

After leaving CCHS behind, Cody plans to go to the University of Calgary to study electrical engineering, which he says has always been an interest. Ty is going to Fairview College, a place he found online, to study being a heavy-duty mechanic, his dad’s occupation.

With a scholarship, Jordyn’s studying social work at Mount Royal University with a goal to work in physiotherapy or pharmacy. “I really enjoy helping people, and feel that all of those occupations would really satisfy that,” she says.

Allison’s bound for the University of Lethbridge to become a high school science teacher. “I like working with kids,” she says, noting she has summer jobs at the Bellevue mine and pool. The sky’s the limit!

It’s time to get into spring safety mode

By Brad Quarin As spring arrives, the next two months will see a bike rodeo in Crowsnest Pass, part of larger efforts there and in nearby communities to keep kids and adults safe.

There are fines to enforce rules like having helmets for kids on bikes. However, Crowsnest Pass community peace officer Stephen Zeff and Pincher Creek Const. Doug Sokoloski agree that something else is the best approach to promote safety.

“The educational component is the most important thing,” Doug says.

“Education. That’s number one,” Stephen says.

The bike rodeo at Horace Allen School and Isabelle Sellon School will be geared towards educating kids on bike safety. The bike rodeo has been running for a while but its reach is being extended beyond kindergarten and Grade 1 students to remind older kids of safety tips, Stephen says.

He’s helping to organize the rodeo and will be giving much of the instruction. Having moved in July from Cold Lake, this is his first bike rodeo here. The event is getting support from fire and rescue teams, EMS and the Alberta Health Unit. “The schools are 100 per cent on board,” Stephen says.

The stations at the schools and interactive learning will cover things like wearing bright clothes at night and what to do when a stranger approaches you. In case you get hurt, carrying a cellphone or letting others know where you’re riding are good ideas, Stephen says.

One of the most important tips being taught is to wear a helmet, which is now mandatory for everyone under 18. Doug, who’s responsible for rural areas and promotes safety through a Lundbreck newsletter, says bike accidents can cause “significant head trauma.”

Stephen finds the talks he’s been having with students about the mandatory helmet rules have been going over well. A $20 helmet can spare you from a $57 fine, he says, but much of the enforcement will be through positive ticketing.

The positive tickets reward kids for obeying the rules, and they’re more than pieces of paper. “They’re stuff like free movie rentals or free ice cream,” Stephen says. Doug gives them out too, and they can include coupons for $1 off Slurpees.

Sometimes, Doug sees kids not wearing helmets as well, and he’ll tell them to walk their bikes home. The kids respond well. “They’re really good,” he says. “They know the rules.” The real challenge is getting parents to buy helmets. For disadvantaged families, Doug is considering whether there should be sponsorship for helmets or if they can give out lost and found helmets, or coupons for helmets.

Currently, the helmet requirements are only for minors. “Should be that way for everybody,” Doug says. Stephen thinks that may happen with time. He has lived in Leduc, where adults had to wear helmets.

Doug also urges bike riders to obey stop and yield signs.

Accidents often result from “blasting through intersections,” he says.

There are important things to remember for adults and riders of quads and motorbikes, as well. Off-highway vehicles must be registered and insured and can’t be driven on public streets.

Doug enjoys going to the backcountry and talking with people, and does a great deal of enforcement of off-highway vehicle rules.

During May long weekend you can expect to see him out on the trails.

You can’t drive a motorbike or quad while impaired, and should keep a sensible speed, Doug says. “Slow down and be careful.”

He cautions parents to keep their keys away from their kids, and he would like to see helmets become mandatory for riding offhighway vehicles.

Doug has simple advice for everyone this spring: “Have fun, but be sensible.”

Building bridges with the Crowsnest Pass Quad Squad

By Brad Quarin In April, we published pictures of a critter found by the Harrison family in Bellevue, who named it Newton. We asked readers if they could tell us if Newton is a newt, salamander, lizard or something else, with the consensus being that he is a long-toed salamander. As it turns out, Newton has friends in the Crowsnest Pass Quad Squad – a family-centred volunteer group who enjoy riding around the Rockies and encourage conservation of the area.

Being unable to use a local bridge, people were driving their quads through a creek, crushing long-toed salamander eggs along the way. Thanks to a grant from the Alberta Conservation Association, the Quad Squad realigned the bridge last year to help the little guys out, says the squad’s office manager, Julie Rayne.

That’s part of their bridging program, which also sees the building of new bridges, generally meant to conserve waters and trout habitats. The squad keeps 41 bridges.

The group had its annual general meeting last month and members are readying themselves for their season opener from June 7 to 9, to ride together in the outdoors.

“Our mission is to promote responsible use of Alberta’s southern Rockies,” Julie says. In addition to conservation, this includes teaching safety to riders.

“And of course we always promote our area as a tourist destination,” she says, particularly in RidersWest magazine.

Past achievements of the group include work on a disaster recovery program with the municipality to deal with floods in the trails. They’ve also been winning ATV riders’ choice awards for the last five years, including for favourite family riding area and best Alberta mountain area.

This year, the group is lobbying the government to keep the trails open, Julie says.

The AGM was concerned with the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan, which the group fears will limit trail use. Shutting down other areas “will force more people to come into our area and overload it,” Julie says.

The group also wants more enforcement of the rules in the outdoors, as they feel there is a shortage of SRD officers in the Pass.

In addition to the season opener, June will bring Ed Gregor Memorial Stewardship Day, when volunteers clean garbage off trails.

Currently, the Quad Squad has about 200 family and corporate members, meaning about 800 individuals, Julie estimates. “Members are mostly people who want to go out and quad and care about our trails,” Julie says.

There are benefits to joining the group, including taking part in rides and barbecues with the club. “You get to meet new people who are interested in the same thing and like the outdoors,” Julie says.

Retired Mountain Radio personality Daryl Ferguson is one person who got involved because of his enjoyment of riding quads, having driven them since he came to Crowsnest Pass 40 years ago. Before that, he drove motorbikes. He is now a vice-chairman in the organization.

However, while the weekend outings are fun, he also enjoys the work on bridges and trails because he knows that makes a nicer ride for everyone.

It certainly makes things nicer for Newton.

3 Rivers Rendezvous this weekend

By Brad Quarin For a 15th year, kayakers will be meeting for a fun long weekend and are welcoming those who don’t boat to come learn the sport.

The 3 Rivers Whitewater Rendezvous will take place on the Castle, Crowsnest and Oldman rivers from May 17 to 20 and will include camping and meals.

“It’s just a great get-together,” says Bob Frantz, who’s on the executive of the Pinch o’ Crow Creekers kayak club, which is hosting the event. “It’s also a good chance for novices.”

Chuck Lee started the annual event as a way to invite people here and have fun. “We have great rivers here to paddle,” he says.

The event is aimed at advanced kayakers and beginners, and usually draws about 200 people from local communities, around the province, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and sometimes beyond, Bob says. That means a chance to meet new people.

Bob says the event is also unique for being less competitive and more leisurely.

The kayakers don’t race and usually go out in groups of six to eight.

The club provides kayaks for beginners, certified instructors for the two-day beginner’s course and meals. This includes two pancake breakfasts, a cold breakfast and steak and chicken dinners, Chuck says.

For advanced kayakers, the event offers a chance to try new kinds of gear, Bob says.

Although the rendezvous isn’t a race, there will be prizes provided by sponsors to be won in draws. Prizes are mainly small things but sometimes “pretty darn nice” items, Bob says.

Successful anniversary auction for the Livingstone Ladies Livingstone Ladies Club president Jo-Anne Elliott, left, and club member Theresa Munch display some of the donated handmade items filling a basket auctioned off last weekend at Heritage Acres.

The group was fundraising for its 100th anniversary celebration with guest speaker Sheldon Smithens, who also stepped up to act as auctioneer.

Jo-Anne says about 160 people were in attendance and, between the auction and ticket sales, just over $2,000 was raised.

“Many thanks to everyone who helped out,” she says. “It was a great turnout, a great day, we were really pleased with the auction.”
