My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin Have you ever wished to know exactly what point in your life you were at?

I thought about this for the first time last week, as my birthday came and went.

I find the older I get, the longer I need to pause to think about the answer, when someone asks how old I am. I’m not trying to put them off, it just seems I seldom dwell on my age, and need to do a quick bit of mental math.

Time certainly does fly by, and I found myself celebrating 45 years on Wednesday.

It made me wonder what portion of my life this really marks. Have I used up two-thirds of my time? Half? More? Less?

In the end, I wouldn’t want to know the answer, or to peek into my future in a crystal ball.

As much as I like to be in control of things and can be driven to distraction by the unknown, this is one thing I’ve determined I don’t care to know.

It’s good enough to believe I become a better person with each passing year, and to hope there are many more to come. I’d like to continue growing and expanding who I am.

I remember a time when 40 was an age that seemed beyond old. Those 40-somethings were ancient!

As I approached my 40th birthday, I was amazed at how many people felt this milestone should be dreaded rather than celebrated. Was I suddenly going to morph into some horrible creature as soon as I hit 40? Was I really a has-been destined to slide down the backside of the hill of life I was now over?

It turned out to be quite the opposite.

Since my 40th birthday I’ve tried many new things that have added colour and excitement to my life. I haven’t liked them all, but some really cool opportunities have come my way and I’m certainly not too old to give them a try.

Some adventures have been deliberate, like attempting downhill skiing for the first time ever at the age of 40. Others, like going river kayaking this past weekend, have come by stepping out of my comfort zone when a chance to try something new fell into my lap.

At the same time as I’m stretching my wings a bit, I’ve found myself a little more stubborn and set in my ways. I guess it can’t all be good!

My goal at this point is simply to live a life I can be proud of and to be sure those who love and support me know how grateful I am.

Birthdays are an excellent reminder to make the most of each day and to pass on a few thanks.

Birthdays are also a great time for tradition.

For example, the phone call from my parents always starts out with the two of them singing “Happy Birthday.” If I was home I’d have the choice between Dad barbecuing dinner or a meal out. Traditions are comforting, and their phone call is something I look forward each year – knowing they’re ready to burst into song puts a smile on my face before I even lift the phone receiver.

This year, a big change for me was not having my daughter with me for the day. Jaiden was off to Edmonton for a band trip. It had to happen sooner or later, right?

Before she left, she gave me a hand-drawn card with a special message inside. The fact that my teenager had taken time to do this will make this card as much a treasure as the ones she made when she was young. We shared a brief hug in the kitchen, then she was off and on her way.

Shootin’ the Breeze staff took me for lunch that day, which was a great treat. There were balloons on the chairs to mark our spot at Mac’s Diner, and we ate until no one could shovel in another bite. Then Dale brought out the cake! If you happened to come by our office Wednesday afternoon and found a sluggish group, this would explain why.

After work, I went quadding for the first time with my husband. I was nervous at first, but think it’s something our family will enjoy together. I was glad it was midweek and the trails weren’t busy yet as I learned the ropes on the machine.

I actually laughed when I went a little too fast through a puddle engulfing the road, and wound up with the equivalent of a bucketful of muddy water right in my face.

Another year, another adventure or two ...

The Breeze Mailbox What’s new at Pincher Creek library?

It’s time for a facelift at Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library. In addition to new carpeting and paint, a multipurpose room will be constructed for videoconferences, quiet study and other uses. The contract for refurbishment was awarded to Scott Construction Group of Calgary.

For public safety as construction proceeds, the library will be closed from June 8 until mid-August.

The library will hold a grand reopening after Labour Day. Please stay tuned for announcements on delivery of services during the summer months.

The summer reading program for elementary students will proceed at a Main Street location.

Dates and times will be announced later.

Patrons of Pincher Creek and District Municipal Library are reminded that library cards can be used at any Chinook Arch regional library.

Pitch, Hit and Run this Saturday

By Brad Quarin This Saturday, kids aged seven to 14 in Pincher Creek Minor Baseball will be coming to Juan Teran Park to test their skills and enjoy a barbecue.

For a second year, Pincher Creek is hosting a Pitch, Hit and Run skills competition and fundraiser to support local minor baseball.

“It is very fun, most of those boys are quite competitive,” says Pincher Creek Minor Baseball president Carrah Walter. “Come join us for a hamburger!”

Kids will be challenged on a number of talents, including hitting targets with baseballs, running and hitting off a tee, trying to get a ball closer to centre field. Each category will have a winner, and there will be an overall winner of Pitch, Hit and Run. Winners go on to the next level in Montana.

While the event is competitive, Carrah says

kids will get to play at their own pace. Kids can come in at 1 p.m., take part in the activities, and then relax with parents and friends and watch and cheer on other players.

A bottle drive will be going in the park simultaneously with the competition and the barbecue, until 4 p.m.

This is Carrah’s first year as president, but she helped organize Pitch, Hit and Run last year. She got involved in Pincher Creek Minor Baseball when her son wanted to play and few adults were keeping the program going. On the morning before the competition she’ll be at the park making sure everything’s set up.

While numbers of people participating in minor baseball in Pincher Creek are generally down, numbers in younger levels are higher.

Carrah hopes many of the young kids will stick with the sport as time goes on.

people,” Fred says of Jane Ann, and he thinks her involvement in the Holy Spirit Church Preservation Society showed real character. “She’s a very principled person.”

Bonnie Kawasaki, a programmer for Family and Community Support Services who was involved in the Order of Crowsnest Pass, is likewise pleased with Jane Ann’s win. She says the committee making the choice had six outstanding nominees and picking just one was “a very difficult decision.”

Jane Ann says her family is also “thrilled” about the honour. “One time or another, I conned them into helping me,” she says, laughing. “They know firsthand the involvement.”

“A big thanks certainly goes out to my husband, Duane,” she says. Currently, they’re excited about reconstructing her grandparents’ house and moving in there.

For the future, Jane Ann wants her events to be “better and bigger.”

“Maybe there’s something else out there that’s begging to be started.”

Jane Ann says the issue was contentious and they fell short of their goal.

Like her mom, Jane Ann was also involved in the Catholic Women’s League. She was president for a long time and the group hosted teas and bazaars and took part in Operation Christmas Child. The CWL lasted for over 55 years.

Irene Filafilo, who was in the CWL too, intended to nominate her for the Order of Crowsnest Pass last year, but missed the deadline.

She was sure to fill out the form this year. “She has done so much,” Irene says, and remarks that no matter what the weather brought, Jane Ann was all about Flumerfelt Park.

This was the first time Irene nominated someone for the honour, and she got Coleman Lion Fred MacLeod to write a second letter in support.

This was also Fred’s first such letter. He has been a Lion for 52 years and has helped decorate the park.

For $15, you can take in a dinner on a traditional wagon at the outdoor arena on the agricultural grounds.

“Everybody buy a ticket and come enjoy themselves,” says organizer Frank Zieffle.

Four or five wagons will each sell 40 tickets and will have a crew to cook a complete meal of meat, potatoes and carrots.

Frank helped start the chuckwagon cookouts 13 years ago at Heritage Acres. It’s been a popular event, and “pretty unique,” he says.

This will be the first year they’ve had one on the agricultural grounds, and the only other change over the years is that it’s “just got bigger.”

This year’s event is a fundraiser for the ag society, a non-profit organization that supports Pincher Creek’s agricultural community through events like the Cowboy Gathering and the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo.

Musicians will likely provide entertainment during the cookout.

Walmart helps make miracles

By Brad Quarin Walmart and the Pincher Creek community are working together to make miracles for the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary.

The Children’s Miracle Network campaign is underway and runs to June 9, with a number of activities designed to raise money, says the store’s charity committee leader, Gayle MacIntyre.

May 13 marked the official beginning of the campaign, but Pincher Creek’s Walmart was already raising money earlier in the month. “We started a few things early just to get a head start on it,” she says. “We try to get as much as we can for the kids.”

The early beginning paid off, as two days into the official campaign, Gayle says the store was already one-third of its way to this year’s goal of $7,500. All proceeds go to the Children’s Miracle Network, an organization that supports children’s hospitals.

A vehicle show and shine, book signings by a local author and a used book sale are still to come.

These will culminate in the Walk for Miracles in Lethbridge on June 9.

The local events are being organized by around a dozen Walmart employees, including Gayle, who manages the photo lab and has worked at the store for seven years. She makes plans and draws up a calendar of events, and depends on the rest of the group to carry out the fundraisers. “They’re the core of making it happen,” she says.

Gayle, who lives in Twin Butte, started with serious charity work after joining the Walmart team.

“Walmart gives you a good platform to execute many of your ideas, and support,” she says, and they also provide matching grants to the cause. “It’s pretty

amazing what we can come up with.” Pincher Creek’s Walmart raised $14,000 last year, one of the best showings in Western Canada.

She’s personally developed a taste for charity. “I enjoy doing stuff like this,” she says. “Enjoy being busy, I enjoy organizing, I enjoy planning, I enjoy coming up with really creative and fun ideas.” Many of the lunches, barbecues and activities turn out fun for others as well.

This year, Gayle is most excited about the show and shine on June 1 at the Walmart parking lot.

She came up with the idea of having one, as they’re popular in Alberta and her family likes attending them. Classic and antique cars and motorbikes will be on display from noon to 4 p.m.

“It takes a lot of planning,” she says, but she’s received help from people from who’ve done show and shines before. They’ve advertised for participants at other show and shines in Lethbridge and Fort Macleod, and on the Internet.

Many people are glad to lend their vehicles.

“They take pride in them, and love to display them and it’s a social thing, a community thing,” she says.

The event will be accompanied by music, kids’ activities, a barbecue and ice cream.

For a second year, local author Murray Pura will also be participating in the local campaign. Gayle knows Murray, who writes novels and stories, and asked him to join the campaign last year. From 10 a.m. to 3 on Friday, he will sell and sign his books, with all proceeds going to the Children’s Miracle Network.

“He’s just a really good guy, and he’s more than willing to help stuff like this,” Gayle says. “He really

enjoyed it last year. Very friendly and flamboyant and outgoing.”

The used book sale will take place on June 7 and 8. “Anyone willing to donate any books can do so on June 6 at the courtesy desk,” she says.

Walmart is also trying to convince people to collect pledges and take part in the Walk for Miracles on June 9.

So far this year, they’ve had success selling balloons and key chains. Slices of cake raised $343 while the barbecue raised $315. Feedback has been good.

By Brad Quarin This May might mark the start of a new field season in a study designed to tell us more about our local grizzly bears. Grad student Andrew Braid will be investigating the grizzly’s food resources in an area from Waterton Lakes to 40 kilometres north of Highway 3. Depending on the weather, the field season could last until the start of September.

The idea was conceived by University of Alberta professor Scott Nielsen and Doug Manzer of the Alberta Conservation Association in Blairmore, and assigned to Andrew, who has an interest in the bears.

“I think they’re iconic in terms of conservation,” Andrew says. “I’m in awe of them when I see them in the field.”

Having studied land reclamation, Andrew realized his main passion was conservation biology and is working on his master’s degree in the renewable resources department.

Andrew’s been interested in grizzly bears since he was in high school – he finds them impressive as “an apex species.”

Since he was looking for a project to do with grizzly bears, he liked Nielsen and Doug’s idea.

Doug says the Alberta Conservation Association is playing a supportive role in the study, and Andrew will gather and analyze most of the data.

Andrew took part in the field work last year, though he wasn’t officially assigned to the project yet. The project will involve determining how much food is available for grizzly bears, by methods such as measuring the amount of vegetation in the area. As Doug notes, knowing where bear food is can reveal where the bears will be.

The second main component of the project involves planting shrubs and berries to increase the amount of food for bears. Although more research is required, the idea is that they can plant shrubs in areas away from human activity, to cut down on encounters and conflicts between people and grizzly bears.

Andrew was previously unfamiliar with the area and depended on the Alberta Conservation Association in Blairmore to get to know it. However, the land made an impression. “I loved it, it’s awesome down there,” he says.

He calls the views of the foothills “gorgeous.”

Andrew imagines one day he’ll be a biologist for the government.

By Tina Webber I live at Vista Village, a large assisted-living facility in Pincher Creek.

When I became familiar enough with the facility to not risk becoming lost after leaving my room, I was able to examine my surroundings. I don’t recall where I was going that day, but I remember passing an unusual work of art.

In the same way you have to stop and admire a well-done painting, I had to stop and admire a miniature wooden replica of what was obviously the Taj Mahal.

I had not seen anything constructed in quite the same fashion. It was made out of what appeared to be wooden matchsticks of various lengths and angles, glued to other wooden matchsticks. I recognized the work it took to glue hundreds if not thousands of pieces of wood together until they became a recognizable miniature of the Taj Mahal (measuring about two by two by 1.5 feet tall).

It was like viewing a skeleton of the building because you could see all the way to the centre. There was also a plaque attached that said it had been donated to Vista Village by a fellow resident, Emile Schauerte. I had the pleasure of interviewing Emile to find out the story behind his creations.

Some years back, his daughter saw something in the Sears catalogue that she thought her father might enjoy. It was a kit called Matchitecture that included the wood, cutter, glue and directions to construct the item displayed on the box. You must measure then precisely cut each piece and glue it exactly where it needs to go, as any error would be magnified if you continued to build upon the mistake. Although the kits are no longer sold in Canada, Emile’s daughter found them for sale in the U.S. and has kept her father well supplied.

Another majestic piece is a Matchitecture rendition of the Notre Dame Cathedral. I found this piece especially interesting because I had just finished reading Pillars of the Earth, a book that described how cathedrals were built and why they had to be constructed in a certain way. It was fascinating to

actually see the structural details I had just read about.

The larger pieces have taken Emile up to a year and a half to complete.

He has constructed about 12 pieces so far that vary from trains to a riverboat.

All but two have been donated to Vista Village, where they are on display.

The other fact that makes his creations one of a kind is Emile’s age – he is 89 years old. I think those half his age would find it difficult to spend the time needed and to be as precise as you need to be to create these works of art.

Sadly, I learned Emile is suffering from impaired sight that makes it impossible to continue this hobby. I know I speak for many who appreciate his work, and thank Emile for sharing this unique art form with us.

Lundbreck Citizens Council gears up for a busy season

By Robyn Dowson Lundbreck Citizens Council, a subsidiary council of the MD of Pincher Creek, is a group of volunteers striving to make Lundbreck a great place to live. The volunteers want to make the hamlet look great and to help its citizens as much as they can.

The citizens council was resurrected in 2004, and the goal at that time was to get the Lundbreck Community Hall in shape to rent out. We’ve done that by installing a wheelchair ramp and railings; completely renovating the washrooms to be wheelchair accessible; renovating the kitchen, which now sports new appliances; fixing up a storage room; putting in a new furnace and refinishing the hall floor. It’s a far cry from what it looked like before we fixed it up. We’re very proud of this historic building, and it can be rented at a very reasonable rate by calling Kerry Smyke at 403-627-8955.

The citizens council works with the MD council on any problems that may be encountered in our community. We have had a water drainage problem by the community hall for many years; the railway crossing into Lundbreck is a disgrace, but we’ve worked with the community, the MD and our MP to help get these problems fixed. The drainage problem will be addressed later this summer and CPR is just realizing that yes, Houston, they have a problem. In the meantime, Volker Stevin is trying to repair the crossing approach and it has been an ongoing job for them.

Three years ago, the MD hired Const. Doug Sokoloski to be our rural policing person. They did not know what a diamond in the rough he would turn out to be. Most of you may know him as the “Coolest Cop” because of his guitar and drum playing in a YouTube video taken last year at a campground, while he was out patrolling the backcountry.

Const. Doug got some Lundbreck residents interested in joining with Pincher Creek Citizens on Patrol and today they have 39 members from communities surrounding Pincher Creek. Lundbreck’s vandalism incidents are way down, compared to before we got COP started. Const. Doug has helped the citizens council and the MD to update or incorporate new bylaws in Lundbreck and he works with the school in the DARE program.

He is very friendly and easy to talk to and is indeed the coolest cop we’ve dealt with. He definitely has put our area on the map.

Lundbreck Citizens Council helped the seniors centre get off the ground by letting the seniors use the community hall rent-free for their activities for over three years, until their drop-in centre was built. The Windsor Centre is a beautiful addition to our community and it’s sad that more people do not join in the many activities going on there. Stop by for a coffee sometime and I’m pretty sure you’ll be amazed at what you find out.

The citizens council feels it should give back to the community, so we hold Cornfest every year, usually on the last Saturday of August, unless it’s the long weekend. This year it’s on Aug. 24 and we have a gazillion events going on. A pancake breakfast starts off the day and there will be a ball tournament, a parade, a show and shine, kids’ games, face painting and a pig roast supper. Wendy at the Lundbreck Hotel is bringing in entertainment to round off the evening. Of course, there will be free corn all afternoon at the concession booth.

We also hold a Christmas community potluck supper. The citizens council provides all the fixings of a traditional Christmas supper and we ask those attending to bring something to complement the supper. Santa usually makes an appearance, and admission is non-perishable food items for the local food bank.

On June 1, we’re holding a community garage sale at the Lundbreck hall, from 9 a.m. till 2 p.m. This allows residents from Lundbreck and surrounding areas to have a place to bring their garage sale items, out of the weather, if it happens to not be nice out, for a charge of $10 per table.

Kristy Stevens is in charge of booking tables and it’s advised to book them soon. Call her at 403-751-4334.

There will also be a concession at around noon with burgers, pop and coffee will be on all day. The Windsor Seniors are also holding a bake sale at their centre that day. If Lundbreck residents wish to hold their own garage sale, we ask them to let us know, as we will have maps of Lundbreck available and we will mark off where other garage sales are being held that day. Helping their garden grow

By Brad Quarin The Lundbreck Gardeners, a new group aiming to beautify the community of Lundbreck, have received a helping hand from local donors. The club’s founder, Monica Zwikstra, handed certificates of appreciation to Dan Cleland of the Lundbreck Citizens Council and Mike Bates of Pincher Plumbing and Heating to thank them for their generosity.

“It’s a really good start,” Monica says. “We could always use more, but we’ve had a really wonderful community effort made.”

The $500 from the council and the $500 from Pincher Plumbing and Heating will be spent buying plants for the garden. Others donated a rock, timbers, soil and manure, and some members have already added the first plants and flowers to the community garden. “We have lots more coming,” Monica says.

Seniors can talk health with Nancy

By Brad Quarin June 3 to 9 is Seniors’ Week in Alberta, and once again Crowsnest Pass Adult Education Association will mark the occasion with a seniors’ conference in Bellevue. Author Nancy Christenson will be at the event on June 6 at the M.D. McEachern Community Centre gym, talking about health matters for people over 50. This will be her first presentation in Crowsnest Pass, she says.

Adult education co-ordinator Toni Gfrerer started the seniors’ conferences in 2007, because she knew a good speaker. “I just thought, let’s give the seniors a try,” she says. “Seniors are a big part of our community.”

The event fits their mandate to encourage lifelong learning. “You’re never too old to learn.”

The conferences, featuring different speakers each year, have also been typically going over well with the local seniors who attend. “We’ve been really lucky,” says another planner, literacy co-ordinator Cheryl Cann. “They’ve all been humorous, good topics, engaging.”

“That’s probably the most rewarding, is seeing

those seniors leave with a smile on their face, giggling,” Toni says. “A lot of them will comment, ‘Sign me up next year!’ ” Indeed, the conferences have regulars.

This year, they found Nancy through the Speakers’ Bureau of Alberta and thought she would be interesting, and the seniors’ conferences hadn’t covered health before.

Nancy, who lives near Wetaskiwin, is not a medical professional, but rather an author and a songwriter. “By nature, I’m a storyteller,” she says.

Her books include Yes, I Really Was a Cowgirl, about her experiences on a ranch, and she’s also written on marriage. However, her struggles with depression, anxiety and menopause, and her increasing dissatisfaction with doctors’ advice, motivated her to blog about health issues.

She enjoys giving presentations, making people laugh and sometimes cry. “I’m a hermit by nature,” she says. “But I love an audience.” Most of her presentations have centred on her experience as a cowgirl.

For the seniors’ conference in Bellevue, Nancy

is planning to talk about menopause, the importance of salt and “basic nutrition.” She’s also going to have “a couple of interactive things,” including a breathing exercise that she says can give women a natural facelift. She’ll likely bring books and CDs and maybe even her guitar and some poetry.

Besides Nancy’s talk, Toni says seniors who come early may enjoy coffee and muffins, and after the presentation a free lunch will be provided, catered by Country Encounters.

The seniors’ conferences usually bring in 100 or 150 people. Sometimes young people come with their grandparents, but Adult Education Association can also provide transportation.

The conference is supported by a provincial grant from Alberta Enterprise Advanced Education, which funds colleges, Cheryl says.

Toni and Cheryl appreciate their help, as well as the efforts from friends and volunteers.

The presentation starts at 10 a.m. and is followed by lunch from noon to 1 p.m. The event is free to attend, and everyone has until Monday to register by calling Toni at 403-562-2853.

Chronicles of Pincher Creek’s frontier past

By Farley Wuth Have you ever wondered how Pincher Creek was named? Which rancher was removed by the Hudson’s Bay Company from his picturesque foothills ranch? Who was the pioneer nearly blown off the steeple of St. Henry’s Church during the windstorm that embedded its hilltop construction into our collective folklore?

Who were some of the early settlers from the Pincher Creek area? How did these arrivals travel far distances and adapt to the harsh frontier conditions on this unique southwestern corner of the Canadian Prairies more than a century ago? Chronicles of general mercantile businesses, livery stables and sandstone banks are interwoven with the religious and political zeal of this thirdoldest surviving settlement from what was to become southern Alberta.

Long-ago agricultural tales from nearby localities abound with their ranching and farming roots, their rural identities often furthered with fond memories of beloved country schools, post offices, places of worship and country stores.

Some even had their agrarian economies supplemented by coal mining or the logging industry.

Those half-forgotten days from the Canadian frontier are indeed what pioneer history is made of. Local history buffs will rejoice in the knowledge that the much-anticipated local history book for the Pincher Creek area, Prairie Grass to Mountain Pass, is about to hit the streets. The latest edition of this classic from nearly 40 years ago

will be officially released next Wednesday, May 29, at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. The funfilled gala starts at 7 p.m. with a book reading, auctioning of the coveted first copy and musical entertainment.

This 984-page volume, chronicling the early history of the Pincher Creek district, has been extensively updated over the previous editions.

Existing family histories have been added to, and genealogies inadvertently omitted the first time around have been added.

Community histories outlining the economic, political and cultural heritage of Pincher Creek and its outlying districts are new to this effort.

The written text is accompanied by a series of visually stunning archival photographs, many of which have never been published before.

This is a must read for anyone with an interest in local history!

This latest effort is a limited edition print and the book is unlikely to be updated or reprinted again in the foreseeable future. People who have pre-ordered the book will be able to pick up their copies the evening of the book launch gala.

Limited additional copies may be purchased at the event for the full price of $125.

Diggin’ in the dirt at KBPV Tracy Glen and her sidekick Sage take advantage of the weather to spruce up the flower beds in front of Pioneer Place. Tracy is the general manager at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village, and her gardening hat is just one of many hats she wears at work. She says, “Helping hands are always welcome in the garden.” The museum is grateful for its current volunteers and encourages new ones to come forward.
