Oh, who are the people in your neighbour hood?

They’re the people that you meet when you’re walking down the street; The people that you meet each day!

Do you recall this little ditty from Sesame Street? It’s one that often pops into my head when I think about what the Breeze means to me.

As the name Shootin’ the Breeze implies, my intent was to create an avenue for neighbourly conversation, and to celebrate the good things happening in our neck of the woods.

Some scoffed at the idea that we could make a go of something based entirely on positive stories and community events. One fellow told me I’d be out of material in two months.

Almost two years later, we’re thrilled to continue proving him wrong!

There is a tremendous amount of material to share. So much, in fact, that we have a lineup of almost 20 stories waiting their turn for publication. We’re surrounded by positive people and really cool community events, and there truly is no room for negativity in these pages.

We do receive some well-written rants and letters to the editor with valid comments and concerns regarding community affairs. But, in sticking with our desire to share positive words only, we politely decline to print them.

Within our pages you’ll find stories of personal triumph and success, stories of courage and strength, stories of encouragement, stories of celebration and stories of history, with a few news tidbits for good measure.

Often we hear comments like, “I had no idea she had done that,” or “I’ve lived here 20 years and have never seen that.”

There are modest heroes living in our neighbourhoods, and you might not realize this when you meet them on the street.

For me, the absolute best part of what I do is getting to know the people I write about.

Sometimes I leave an interview with a smile on my face, while other times I’m in tears as soon as I’m out of sight and in my car.

I’ve always had a strong sense of empathy, and many people I meet touch my heart so strongly that tears are inevitable. Often the tears fall during interviews as well.

As I’m writing, a message just popped up in my email box that has put a lump in my throat and has my eyes watering. It’s a simple note of thanks for helping with an event and a glimpse to the future. In reality, though, the thanks go both ways – I took away more than I gave.

When I cry, it’s not because I feel sorry for someone and what they’re going through. I cry because I’m amazed and inspired by their response to a challenging situation, and the grace and courage so many show. I cry simply because I’m in awe.

Over two years I’ve met more amazing children, youth and adults than I can count. What I do count them as, are friends.

I’m not a formal interviewer. While I always have a specific angle and particular questions in mind, I prefer just to chat and to listen. When people feel comfortable enough to speak about themselves, their lives, their challenges, their hopes and their achievements, they share some incredible stories.

Some of these stories aren’t for sharing publicly, and it’s my job to watch that fine line closely. Each time I’m entrusted with a story it’s an incredible gift.

For me, the story doesn’t end when it’s published in our pages. Each person and each story is being woven into my own life chronicle. I take away incredible inspiration, and the personal relationships extending beyond publication day are gifts I treasure.

Thanks for the privilege of bringing you the stories of the people in your neighbourhood.

The Boys and Girls Club of Crowsnest Pass has kicked off its 2013 fundraising campaign, with an emphasis on raising community awareness of the club and its many positive benefits. It Just Takes One is the campaign theme.

“Our primary message to the community is to be involved, be the difference and be the one,” says Scott Warris, president of the club. “We want to show people the important services the Boys and Girls Club provides, which help to create a healthy and inviting community. We are way more than just a recreational group.”

Summer camps and after-school activities are among the club’s services, with healthy snack options provided in all programs. Transportation is available on the club’s own 42-passenger bus, supported in part by Teck Coal.

“Our club is supported entirely through grants, donations and fundraising,” says treasurer Diane deLauw. “We receive no direct federal or provincial tax dollars. Our goal is to raise at least $20,000 through this campaign and other events throughout the coming year. These funds are critical to the future of the programs within our community.”

Individuals can help by supporting the Send Our Kids to Camp initiative. Just $30 will sponsor a local child for a day of summer programs, and $100 will cover a week of programs (Tues­day to Friday). This is a simple, direct way to support the youth and children of Crowsnest Pass – your donation stays in the community and is used entirely for local programs.

New this year is the club’s Crowsnest Pass Children’s Festival, to be held July 20 during Rum Runner Days. Children’s entertainers, bouncy castles, a petting zoo and Pure Power Wrestling will be the main events during this exciting, family-friendly event.

The campaign will finish that day with the ever-popular Boys and Girls Club Duck Race.

Two series of ducks – 1,680 in all – will race down the Crowsnest River, from Blairmore’s centre access bridge to Frank. Duck tickets are available for $5 or $20, with excellent prizes for the first and last duck to cross the finish line.

Modernizing emergency response services

By Brad Quarin This May, residents of Pincher Creek may have developed a better appreciation for local emergency management.

Early in the month, residents saw a public demonstration of rope skills put on by the search and rescue team, simultaneously raising awareness and training members.

This was followed by Emergency Preparedness Week, which involved several agencies, a number of displays and answering questions on Main Street.

A man involved in both of these events is Brett Wuth of Pincher Creek Search and Rescue, who is Pincher Creek Community Emergency Management Agency’s volunteer of the year.

Brett believes he received the honour basically by chance. “I essentially see myself as a representative example, not necessarily the most deserving,” he says. “There’s tons of volunteers that contribute to our community, and not enough awards to go around.”

The current director of emergency management, Dave Cox, sees things a little differently.

“He’s probably one of the most dedicated volunteers in our community,” Dave says.

Dave assumed a leadership role in emergency management when Brett bowed out, but says Brett is “still very much involved.”

To former fire chief Ralph Bourque, Brett’s most valuable contribution was helping “our agency to flourish and modernize.” Brett is a computer programmer by profession, and Ralph says Brett helped the organization with electronics and got politicians to embrace the concept.

A graduate of Matthew Halton High School, Brett says he began volunteering with the yearbook and student council. In university, he joined an undergraduate society and a computer advocacy group in Calgary.

“Volunteering, in general, is very rewarding,” he says. “To see that there’s both a need and an opportunity for your efforts to help contribute to fill that need, that’s pretty satisfying.”

When he returned to Pincher Creek, he says, he helped introduce the community to the Internet and joined search and rescue and other organizations.

a search manager and helps plan searches. He also leads the rope rescue team and organizes training.

Pincher Creek has a fair amount of need for search and rescue, he says. The rope rescue team comes in handy for things like people who’ve driven over an embankment or fallen while mountain climbing. Other search and rescue efforts may be required when campers or snowmobilers get lost.

Search and rescue co-operates with the Pincher Creek Community Emergency Management Agency, which responds to disasters and manages evacuations and emergency services.

Eight or nine years ago, Pincher Creek advertised for a position in PCCEMA. “I didn’t know a lot about emergency management at that time, but I thought it was kind of interesting, kind of related” to search and rescue, Brett says.

Ralph considers Brett’s step from search and rescue to emergency management to be a natural progression.

During his time in PCCEMA, Brett got more

people involved in the agency by recruiting people with certain skills. People were taken into the agency from the military, parks and fire agencies.

Brett would also “modernize” PCCEMA with his technical knowledge. “My tendency is to see computers as the solution for some of these problems that the organization struggled with,” he says. He created a database to automate the upgrading of the municipal emergency plan and an internal wiki to keep records.

Like Ralph, Dave appreciates Brett’s computer knowledge. “He’s very talented.” Dave also credits Brett as important in developing the PCCEMA of today, and says Pincher Creek has one of the best emergency response systems in Alberta.

In fact, Brett says creating a structure for an organization that will endure after he’s gone would be his proudest achievement. He feels his management policies have been continued since he stepped down as director and is happy about that.

More recent projects have been the rope skills demonstration and Emergency Preparedness Week. Brett calls the demonstration “a great success,” since many people saw it. At the next meeting, six new people came, although he doesn’t know if they were inspired by the demonstration. He didn’t organize Pincher Creek’s Emergency Preparedness Week, but he was there and helped set up displays.

Besides search and rescue and emergency management, Brett is involved in the Southwest Alberta Sustainable Community Initiative, which handles conflict resolution for controversial matters. SASCI provides courses in conflict management, and Brett has done a bit of mediation, finding it interesting. SASCI needs volunteers and can be reached at 403-627-1750.

Brett was attending the volunteer luncheon at the end of April when he received the award for volunteer of the year. Ralph Bourque, last year’s recipient, was asked to present the award.

“It was a huge surprise,” Brett says, but he started to get suspicious earlier that day when he kept getting calls from people checking if he would be there. At any rate, he appreciates the recognition, and I’m sure the community appreciates his contributions.

Advisory commitee is raising awareness for community safety

By Brad Quarin At the Lifestyle Show in Coleman in April, members of the Community Police Advisory Committee were present and handing out brochures. The overwhelming response was that people knew nothing about the committee.

“They don’t know we’re here,” says chairwoman Aggie Mitchell. “We’re trying to let people know.”

The committee serves Crowsnest Pass and Lundbreck, with a mission to listen to residents’ ideas and concerns and bring them to town council, the RCMP and peace officers.

The group isn’t a neighbourhood watch, but in its own way aims to improve local safety.

Anyone uncomfortable with dealing with the RCMP directly can attend one of the group’s meetings, held every two months except in the summer, and hopefully get issues resolved.

Aggie is an active volunteer in the community whose work over the years has earned her the Order of Crowsnest Pass and a Diamond Jubilee Medal. She thought the idea of serving on a police advisory committee sounded interesting when she joined in 2009.

She had read about the committee, established around 2005, in the newspaper and wrote a letter to express an interest in safety.

Eventually she became chairwoman, having experience leading other groups. Currently, Aggie is in her second three-year term.

There are six members of the committee, including George Dowson of Lundbreck and a youth representative, meant to provide a high school student’s perspective. For the last two years, the youth member has been Ayesha Quarishi, who’s in Grade 12 at Crowsnest Consolidated High School.

Ayesha joined in Grade 11 after an officer came to the school and talked about the committee. She figured it would be a good opportunity to meet people, become familiar with the Pass and help solve problems. “It’s

been really fun,” she says.

Among the issues the committee is concerned about are having road signs, making crosswalks safe and addressing vandalism, Aggie says. They’re also interested in education to promote simple cautionary measures like locking houses and vehicles, and wrote an article called “Lock it or lose it” for the municipal newsletter.

An issue Ayesha brought up was smoking on school property, and she says the committee has also talked about vehicles speeding near the school and the lack of street lights there.

While the committee grapples with problems like these, they have had some achievements so far, Aggie says. Their meeting about vandalism was well attended and they managed to establish a curfew for children between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. As well, they’ve nominated individuals and groups for Solicitor General Crime Prevention Awards, and one of their nominees, Citizens on Patrol, received an award in 2010.

The idea of having meetings more often has been discussed, but for now once every two months seems to be enough, Aggie says, and meetings can be called for urgent matters.

Besides raising awareness, one thing the committee will have to do is find a replacement or two for Ayesha, since she’s graduating.

“We’re trying to bring more younger members into the committee now,” Ayesha says.

After exams, she will be going on vacation and then to SAIT to study chemical laboratory technology, spelling an end to her time on the committee. “I think I’ll miss it,” she says, calling the group “a big family.”

Meetings of the Community Police Advisory Committee are open to the public at the council chambers in Coleman. Aggie encourages people to attend for news about their community.

MHHS grads are planning their paths

By Brad Quarin Grade 12 students of Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek have put a lot of work into planning their grad ceremony this weekend. Breanna Green feels this is a year with a particularly strong effort.

“We’re all pretty involved with school,” says another graduating student, William Nicas. “We all volunteer.” He feels the over 50 students in Grade 12 are friends, which creates a strong group.

“It’s just a big group of friends. There’s not really cliques or anything,” Breanna says. The grads are also diverse in their strengths and interests. “A little bit of everything,” she adds.

According to Breanna and William, standouts in the graduating class include Lisa Manners and Veronica Oczkowski.

Lisa is the class valedictorian and is making a trip to India in July with the international charity Free the Children. Her peers say she’s well-rounded as an academic and athletic student.

They say Veronica is an academic and athletic student as well. Breanna describes her as funny, and thinks Veronica is probably bound for medical school. William points out Veronica’s prowess in freestyle skiing as an example of her athleticism.

In preparation for graduation, Riley Bonertz helped build an arch, a job he says he got because of his woodworking skills.

For his part, William is on the clothing committee, ordering hoodies and sweatpants for the grads.

Breanna is on the decorating and written document committees, which involved making invitations and coming up with prophecies for the grads.

The slogan for this year’s grad is Make Your Own Path, and the centrepieces will have “a rustic western theme,” she says.

William is pleased with how the planning went, and the students are looking forward to their grad.

Riley simply says, “It’s about time.”

When asked about their favourite high school memory, all three students demonstrated a fondness for slapstick comedy.

Riley recalls falling through the shop roof onto deer antlers, resulting in some scrapes and laughs.

William remembers “funny crashes” while sledding during lunchtime with friends, and Breanna recalls a gym class game in which she tried to jump from a trampoline to the mat, but hit the bleachers instead.

After high school, Riley and William plan to go to SAIT to become instrumentation engineer technicians for oil plants.

Breanna is going to Lethbridge College and then Mount Royal University for communications, advertising and public relations. “You just have to be a people person,” she says. She enjoys public speaking and likes to write. She currently writes poetry.

Students will receive their diplomas at a cap and gown ceremony Friday in the school gym, followed by a banquet at Community Hall.

A spring celebration will follow Saturday at Community Hall, with a grand march, speeches and dancing.

Paths have been chosen, and we wish the grads of Matthew Halton High School good luck.

A new look for Rum Runner Days

By Brad Quarin It was a desire to see Rum Runner Days, the annual weekend of celebration for Crowsnest Pass, continue for another year that motivated Penny Warris to take on the role of co-ordinator.

Being involved in the Boys and Girls Club, she has played a part in the festivities in the past, but this will be her first time overseeing the event. It’s a volunteer position, her husband, Scott, points out.

“It’s meant to be a community event, so it needed to be somebody from the community to co-ordinate it,” she says.

Penny, who lives in Bellevue, feels she has experience with organizing in her career as a travel agent and in various events. She was also on the Rum Runner Days committee last year.

In the May meeting held to plan this year’s events, she was satisfied with the attendance of 17 people.

“Everyone’s very positive about it and very supportive,” Penny says. Although the popular Thunder in the Valley fireworks show once again will not take place, she feels this is less controversial this year.

“I’ve had no negative feedback at all about Thunder.”

Penny herself says she’s “fine” with Thunder in the Valley being off this year.

But fireworks shows may return in the future.

Among the events set for this year is the Crowsnest Children’s Festival, being held for the very first time. An idea that grew out of the Boys and Girls Club, it will be held at the Blairmore Gazebo on July 20.

It will include inflatable castles, vendors, and entertainment provided by the Saskatchewan a capella singers HOJA, who are popular with local kids.

There will also be other musicians, a magician from Calgary and Pure Power Wrestling, a family-oriented wrestling group that Penny says includes Bellevue native Ed Gatzky. “He was very eager to come back this year,” Penny says. “And

I think that will bring a demographic that wouldn’t necessarily come to the children’s festival.”

Some things from past Rum Runner Days will now be part of the children’s festival, including a petting zoo of sheep, rabbits and horses, and the duck race.

The race involves about 1,600 plastic ducks being dropped into the river, with people buying raffle tickets with numbers matching a specific duck. Winning ducks bring prizes for the ticket holders.

The 1,200 yellow ducks sell for $5 each and the 480 green ducks cost $20. It’s a significant fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club, says Scott, the organization’s president.

The kids who know about the children’s festival are looking forward to it, Penny says.

Another thing she is excited about is the Taste of Crowsnest Pass Wine and Food Festival, being held for its second year. “That was extremely successful, and we’re really looking forward to making that bigger this year.”

Like last year, local restaurants will have tables providing samples of food, wine and coffee, and there will be musical accompaniment. Last time, Popiel’s, Stone’s Throw Cafe and Highwood Motel were among the businesses to participate. This year the festival will have a new and larger venue, the Blairmore Legion.

At the same time as the children’s festival, a show and shine will take place across the road, creating “a real street festival atmosphere,” Penny says. The show and shine is organized by Joni MacFarlane and will include door prizes and trophies. Crowsnest Pass is a rare community to host show and shines without a local car club.

Penny says planning for the parade is going smoothly, and the Sole Survivor foot race will have a longer course.

Angela Fischer, a co-ordinator for CNIB, visited and shared tips for independent living and a look at items to make it easier.

These included magnifiers and buzzers.

A DAISY reader can read books from CDs or download books off computers, says Alice Cook of the Pincher-Cowley Roaring Lions. Alice helped start a support group concerned with vision loss and notes DAISY readers can be borrowed at the Pincher Creek library.

Rhea Terre showed me a closed-circuit TV which uses a camera to project paper onto the screen. Rhea owns an older model and uses it to read important documents. “It has allowed me to be totally independent,” she says.

CNIB – previously known as Canadian National Institute for the Blind – was founded for veterans of the First World War who had lost their sight. CNIB’s support services for the blind and partially sighted later became open to the public.

It’s so long since I ate crow that I can’t remember whether you eat it dry on a plate, or in a bowl with a bit of gravy. No matter what, I will thank God with every bite that the sun is shining on your crops, your gardens and your well-being.

Our members were very busy during May. Walter and June Spak hosted a tasty soup and bun lunch with a social afternoon afterwards, while David Green explained the dreams and nightmares of applying for government grants.

We are assured of David’s help to fill out the forms when we get our ducks in a row.

The duplicate bridge club convened a potluck lunch for a big crowd before their mid-month Wednesday game at the centre.

Now their members are scrambling to fit in golf time with bridge time, but no worries on that score. You happy, crazy people who love bridge are very welcome to this serious

recreation for the summer months, every Wednesday at 1 p.m. sharp.

Change and progress is the name of the game. Marina Gay is the new secretary at the Huddlestun Centre. Not an easy job; give her a pat on the back and help her out as she fits in.

The Mother’s Day tea was the most beautiful, flawless collation you could ever have wished for. The hostesses went all out with the food, the table decorations, and the six lovely door prizes. It was a very pleasant afternoon and, although it was a busy weekend in town, we had hoped more people would have been able to come and share this special occasion.

It gave me a great deal of satisfaction to know that my wonderful, proper English mother would have to learn to eat crow, too, to see her Canadian daughter with all the other Pincher Creek ladies enjoying our polite, dainty tea rather than living out in the sticks

in an igloo.

There was only one man at the tea until Alyre Therriault brought up the rear. Louis Patterson, early bird with his wife Barb, won a door prize and offered to do a male stripper act next year to help drag in the crowd! Again, change and progress. Fay Jenkins won the 50-50 draw.

By the time you read this, the board and general meetings will have been held, so pick up your calendars for June and take note of bingo on the 14th and 18th at 1 p.m.

Heads up for those of you who enjoy meeting old and new friends at Lundbreck Senior Centre. They serve coffee and tall tales every Friday at 2 p.m.

Debbie Berg keeps me informed about Heritage Acres. The hard-working volunteers out there are worthy of your support. Take note of the Hillsview Ladies strawberry tea on June 5 at 2 p.m., Red Hats and all, $5. The Heritage Acres annual cookout on June 22 kicks off at 2 p.m., with the meal about 6 p.m., all for $20.

Fish and Wildlife officers were alerted to a distressed cow moose and newborn calf Friday in Blairmore.

Fish and Wildlife and RCMP officers devised a plan to capture the calf, pop it into the box of the enforcement vehicle and convince the mother to follow.

They drove to a wooded area where the cow and calf were reunited and continued on their way.

A few hours later, a second calf was discovered – apparently the cow had twins. It was captured, and spent time with a human foster mom, Christy Pool, while officers searched for its mother.

Many hours later, the cow moose was sighted and reported by a group of teenagers. She was found walking down Main Street in Blairmore. She was reunited with her missing calf and quickly left town via the most direct route to the forest.

“I’m sure the calf thought she was abducted by aliens, but was happy to be back with her family,” says Fish and Wildlife officer John Clarke.

Lend a hand of stewardship June 1

By Brad Quarin Andrew Rusynyk feels Albertans take care of their public spaces.

In fact, he says southwestern Alberta is home to “the longest-standing stewardship day in Canada” – Ed Gregor Memorial Stewardship Day, which this year falls on June 1.

For a 19th year, volunteers will meet on Saturday morning and enjoy a free breakfast, followed by activities ranging from cleaning up campsites to planting trees to fixing trails and bridges.

“It’s a great day,” says Gail Simmons, a director of the Crowsnest Forest Stewardship Society, which had its annual general meeting recently.

The society leads the stewardship day, with Andrew as president co-ordinating the volunteers.

But he says many of the volunteers already know their jobs.

The event is named after Ed Gregor, who Andrew says worked in forestry for the provincial government and showed a “creative leadership spirit” in promoting sustainable land use. Gregor died on the job.

Nineteen years ago, Gail helped start the Crowsnest Forest Stewardship Society to keep up sustainable use and educate the public.

After moving to the area, Andrew heard of

the stewardship day and gave it a try, finding the experience positive and meeting interesting people. “You just felt good about what you did,” he says, calling the event “a really neat day.” He has served as president of the society for eight years.

While some of the work involves picking up garbage, Gail emphasizes there’s more to it than that, including regravelling trails. Andrew says they have made new trails and put in, fixed or replaced bridges.

The success of the stewardship day is due in part to the volunteers, with Andrew being happy about the level of participation. “It’s fantastic,” he says.

Gail says the event attracts between 150 and 200 people, “young and old.” The turnout can be affected by the weather, and Andrew hopes conditions this year will be favourable.

Among the groups involved are the Crowsnest Pass Quad Squad, the Crow Snow Riders, the Crowsnest Pass Cross-Country Ski Association and the Lethbridge Coulee Kruzers. Ranchers and environmental groups often take part.

Andrew is excited to have the new Crowsnest Pass scouts taking part for the first time, after the scouting group approached the stewardship society to get involved.

So many people doing such good things! Clockwise from top left: Folks had a chance to enjoy a burger for lunch while learning a bit about ovarian cancer on Saturday. Pincher Creek’s first Ovarian Cancer Walk of Hope will be in September. From left are Ralph Bourque, Braeden Claringbull, Marlene Bourque and Simon Claringbull. Marlene’s daughter Leslie Claringbull and granddaughter Danielle Tetachuk ran a half marathon in Calgary on Sunday, also in support of Ovarian Cancer Canada.

Livingstone School students held a Hats for Humanity fundraiser last week.

They paid $1 to wear their hats to school. Proceeds will assist Pincher Creek student Lisa Manners who is travelling to India this summer with international charity Free the Children. From left are Quylen Darragh, Caleb Laffin, Zack Uphill, Noah Plummer and Zack Hann.

The Purina Walk for Dog Guides brought Jo-Anne Cairns, David Zech, Calvin DeWit and Bill Brown for a walk along Pincher Creek with their guide dogs earlier in the month. The event is sponsored by the local Lions clubs and has raised over $10,000 this year, with proceeds going toward guide dog training.

It is free to register with CNIB and use their services. The organization offers adaptive solutions for many activities, from cooking to cleaning to dressing.
