My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin Do you know it’s Seniors’ Week in Alberta?

The idea is to recognize the contributions of seniors – in our families and in our communities.

A good friend and I used to joke about getting old. We were just out of high school then, and envisioned ourselves sitting on a verandah together telling tales of “do you remember when?” Of course, this scenario included wooden rocking chairs and a cold beer in hand.

At that point in time, setting an example or leaving a legacy weren’t things we even considered. We simply imagined that we’d still be friends (we are), that we’d always have things to talk about (we do) and that we’d still like to sip from a frosty bottle of beer (indeed we do). I don’t imagine that will change in the next 20 years.

We didn’t consider the influence we would have on our children and grandchildren. At the time we couldn’t fathom being parents, and even now, grandchildren won’t be a serious thought for many years.

We weren’t thinking about how to be contributing members of the community – we were simply living life one day and one stage at a time.

I doubt any of our senior citizens thought much differently. Did they plan to be community leaders, war heroes, criminals, professionals, labourers or whatever they turned out to be?

I don’t think so. Each followed their life course, creating their own little bit of history as they went. Some tales are colourful and vivid, while others are a blend of supporting colours that make the tapestry complete.

At the mention of seniors, I automatically think of my grandparents. As a child, I didn’t see enough of them to get to know them well. It was mostly a matter of distance, and was simply the way it was.

Things were a little more formal then, and there were no pet names, just Grandma Robison and Grandma and Grandpa Hart. I still can’t think of them any other way. At the same time, I can’t imagine my daughter addressing my parents this way today.

They all shared talents and gifts, whether it

was through music, needleworking or woodworking. I have fond memories, but I don’t know who they were as people. They were old, and I was young and interested in other things – it’s my loss.

My grandfather wrote out some of his history, and I was surprised at the adventures he had as a young man. I would never have guessed, based on the man I knew! I’d love to know more, but he passed away before I read his biography.

Now my parents are the seniors. They’re just barely old enough to collect CPP and a seniors’ discount, but they’ve passed the magic age of 65.

They don’t seem old to me, and I’m quite sure they don’t seem old to their grandchildren. Sure, they both have grey hair and they move just a little slower than they did 10 years ago, but they don’t seem old in the way my grandparents did.

I believe their generation has an entirely different style of relationship with grandchildren than their parents did. When my parents worked late we looked after ourselves. When I work late, my daughter looks after herself and often calls her grandparents just to chat. They are a meaningful part of her everyday life even though they live over 1,000 kilometres away.

This relationship delights me and I hope her children will hold me as a friend and confidante in the same way some day.

There are many things to look forward to as the years continue to zip on by. When I was 20 I didn’t want to be old. Now, I hope I can do it as gracefully and actively as some of the grey- and white-haired people I’ve come to know well.

In the pages of the Breeze we share stories of people who are commended for doing extraordinary things. Often these stories include seniors, and even seniors volunteering to help other seniors.

This week, let’s acknowledge everyone who wears their age proudly. Not only those who are recognized for standing out, but also those who quietly do their thing and are passing their love, knowledge, dedication, skills, support and wisdom on through generations.

Thank you for your contributions and for making a difference in our lives.

The Breeze Mailbox Care Bears are grateful for ongoing support Pincher Care Bears Society just received another boost. Residents of Whispering Winds have donated the money they collect for recycling to the Care Bears.

The $413 donation will help subsidize the volunteer drivers’ expenses as they transport and support seniors, and other individuals who need assisting, to their various appointments in Pincher Creek, Lethbridge and Calgary.

Although the clients pay a set price and the drivers volunteer their time, the amount collected does not quite pay for the gas and expenses for the driver’s car. The society depends on donations, grants and casino money to make up this difference.

Care Bears play a vital role in helping people enjoy the independence of their own homes for as long as possible. These donations are most appreciated!

C.N.P. Girl Guides seek members and volunteers Girl Guides of Canada is coming back to Crowsnest Pass in September 2013.

Sparks (five to six years) and Brownies (seven to eight years) will meet as a combined group at Isabelle Sellon School, Thursdays at 6 p.m.

Guides (nine to 11 years) needs leaders for this group to happen.

Pathfinders (12 to 14 years) will meet at ISS, Thursdays at 7 p.m.

Liz points out that Alberta has had an initiative to end homelessness since 2009, and that many projects have been successful. “It’s time for Pincher Creek to step up to the plate in addressing our affordable housing in this community,” she says.

David Green, co-ordinator of Family and Community Support Services in Pincher Creek, has worked with Liz to create awareness of the local housing issue.

“There’s nothing we could call affordable housing” for low income residents in town, David says.

There are people living in substandard housing, and a blind eye is turned to the condition of the homes because if they were closed there would be nowhere for these people to go.

With a lack of transitional housing, David points out that many women who seek refuge at the Women’s Emergency Shelter return home because there’s nowhere else for them to go. “It’s frightening – you can stay for a certain length of time, then you must leave,” he says. When transitional housing isn’t available, many women and children return to their abusive homes.

Rentals can also be an issue because tenants fear eviction if they request an inspection. In the end, having a leaky roof over one’s head is better than no roof at all.

Liz feels many perceive there’s not an issue because there appears to be an adequate vacancy rate. The catch is that the housing is not affordable for everyone. “They have no idea of the really dire straits some of our citizens live in,” she says. “We all have a responsibility to address this because these are our neighbours.”

“The answer has to be increased awareness, and a partnership built from this awareness in all levels of community,” David says.

“We have a situation in this community, and to fix it will require some basic and unselfish thinking,” Liz adds.

“We have the responsibility to give a hand up, not a hand out, and are battling a mindset – there’s a tendency for people to believe those who live in that situation deserve to be in that situation,” she says.

“It is really brave for the Angels to step up to support people in the community – this is a very challenging issue to take on.”

Why all the talk about affordable housing?

Because this need in the community came to light through assisting one family. David feels town council has a renewed interest in the topic and Connie doesn’t want it swept under the rug.

Thanks to everyone whose donations support Angels Within Us, Connie has found new hope and an opportunity to break a negative cycle. She plans to pay it forward by raising awareness for others in similar situations. “It needs to happen and many eyes are closed to this,” she says. “If there’s any way I can help, I want to be part of it.”

For the Love of Birds

By Shannon Robin Watercolour painter Yvonne Martinez draws inspiration from her love of nature, and in particular from her love of birds.

She has put together a collection of current and past pieces to create a retrospective show – For the Love of Birds – on display until June 11 at Lebel Mansion in Pincher Creek. Many pieces have been lent back for the show, which depicts more than three decades of work. Consequently, about half of the pieces are not available for sale.

Complementing Yvonne’s work are intricately carved birds by Carole Weran of Carbon, Alta. “This is the first time her work has been shown properly,” Yvonne says. “I’m really thrilled each time I call her to say ‘Another one sold.’ ” After For the Love of Birds wraps up, the watercolour paintings will come to roost at Yvonne’s gallery – The Crowsline Studio – in Coleman.

It is here that Yvonne’s love of birds takes on another dimension.

Visitors to the gallery are welcome to take a stroll along the Birdhouse Discovery Trail. The walk takes about a half hour, and along the way you can explore almost 70 birdhouses and thematic displays among the Douglas fir.

Every birdhouse and every artisan has a story. Few are typical and some are most unusual. Some have been donated, some purchased, some commissioned and some sponsored.

Yvonne feels this is the best vantage point in the area.

It’s an eclectic collection, and you may find yourself drawn to visit more than once. Yvonne considers her backyard trail a “hidden gem,” and so far most visitors have found her through word of mouth.

As a young girl, Yvonne used her crayons to do her own drawings rather than using colouring books. By the time she was in Grade 6 she had written and illustrated a 17-chapter children’s book. From an early age, her life was about discovery, creativity and sharing.

Yvonne has always loved nature and writing, and made time to develop her passions. Many of her ideas and projects were inspired by National Geographic magazines – whether it was painting or discovering and documenting things as a field naturalist.

As an artist, Yvonne has been painting birds exclusively for 32 years. “Every now and then I

A typical piece of work takes a couple of months to produce between research and painting. Yvonne doesn’t simply paint something because it’s aesthetically pleasing, she learns everything she can about the bird’s characteristics and habitat. Ask her about budgies – you’ll find out pretty quickly that you know very little about these common birds!

Yvonne moved from Calgary to Crowsnest Pass a few years ago, and feels she has created some of her best work here. “It’s quite fantastic when you look out the window and find yourself eye-level with a rufous hummingbird,” she says. She also loves her view of the sleeping giant.

With every piece of art, Yvonne includes a complete story to share her references and inspiration. Titles are chosen with care and it’s a special thrill for Yvonne when someone purchases a painting based on its name.

Yvonne is a graduate of Alberta College of Art, and a signature member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.

“I couldn’t have taken on this career at what it costs now,” she says. When she graduated in 1981, the cost was $100 per semester. Now, she says, it would cost $6,000 per semester.

The cost was less, but the workload was substantial. “We’d have to fill a 100-page sketch book every month over and above our regular schedule,” Yvonne says.

In her final semester of college, Yvonne and her classmates were told to expect that in 10 years, only two percent of them would still be doing anything art related.

Of her 32 years working as an artist, Yvonne has worked 28 full time. “I’m so thrilled I chose to do it and actually made it as a career,” she says. “It’s required dedication, focus, clarity and hope that people would like what I do.”

“It’s the life of the artist – you work for yourself harder than you would for anyone else.

It’s a good job and I’ve met some pretty amazing people,” she adds.

Are you an unwitting predator?

Spring has come to Pincher Creek in a big way these last few weeks. The geese on our pond have already moved their goslings from the nest to better foraging areas, and soon other youngsters will be evident on the landscape. I’m pretty sure the songbirds are already feeding young in the nest.

There is a she-fox down at Waterton with four or five kits in her den. The deer should be appearing soon with speckled fawns at their side.

With all this rain, the human wish is for shelter from the rain and the cold wet that seeps through our clothes after a day in the field, no matter how well we dressed for the weather. If we have babies, we put a lot of effort into keeping them out of the chill.

Our natural tendency is to try to shelter our children, our families, our livestock ... the wildlife. We provide barns and shelters of trees or sheds for livestock, houses for our families.

Some of us, when we encounter what may appear to be waterlogged and helpless fawns (or other young wildlife), might be tempted to shelter these beautiful creatures too.

Don’t.

The unfortunate thing about “sheltering” young wildlife is that the chances of that creature’s survival are cut in half the moment you touch it. In effect, by handling baby wildlife, you may be inadvertently sentencing it to death.

This may sound drastic, but let’s think about it. One day when I was in the field, I startled a whitetail doe and tiny fawn as they were crossing the trail in front of me. The doe bolted into the pine forest on the left and whistled as she ran. The fawn disappeared from view before my eyes, just sank into the ground. I stopped and watched. I took a couple of photos of the fawn from a few feet away; it wasn’t hard to find since it was only two feet

the fawn to the “predator” that took it. Even if I had returned the fawn to the site later, the doe might not have returned for it and it may have died or been preyed upon.

I learned recently that a fawn can survive up to two days without its mother.

This is miraculous, given the newborn’s requirement for nutrients. But isn’t it also miraculous that a doe can be pregnant and suppress the development of the fetus if it’s a hard year?

CCHS gives rugby a try

By Brad Quarin Crowsnest Consolidated High School’s new boys’ rugby team is up and running, finishing its first year and planning on another.

Many CCHS students haven’t played rugby before, and assistant coach Matt Peterson says this year was intended mainly to give the student athletes some experience and a chance to organize.

Looking to play wherever they could, the boys had a game in Lethbridge and won a game in Drayton Valley. Matt says he saw “some really good team efforts from the boys.”

Crowsnest Pass doesn’t have its own rugby field, so the CCHS boys’ first home game was held in Pincher Creek, against Cranbrook.

Cranbrook won with a score of 32-0, but Matt says the CCHS boys learned tackles, defence and a few offensive moves in the process.

He’s looking forward to next year, and expects the team will improve. A couple of players are graduating, but most are in Grades 10 and 11 and so will be back next year.

A day back on the farm

By Dennis Robin As I drove to Darryl and Valerie Carlson’s place a few weeks ago, I thought about the last time I took part in a branding and wondered what I would be doing this time.

The day started with a stop to pick up the roast that would be dinner for the farmhands after a long day of branding. It was a day of mixed weather; we had some sun, rain, a cool breeze and more sun. It was a good thing I dressed in layers!

After meeting the crew, some familiar faces and some new faces, it was time to divide the chores.

I was paired with a familiar face, James Freeman, and it was our job to herd the calves up the chute. The rest of the crew then worked with amazing speed and cohesion to brand, vaccinate and tag the calves. The males were also castrated.

At the end of the day, we enjoyed a beer and a great feast put on by Valerie. My feet were sore, my shins were a little marked up and a few muscles I never knew I had were making their presence and overuse known.

Driving home, the thoughts of the day passed through my mind.

With a smile I thought it was a good day to be back on the farm.

Livestock branding is a communal activity that has been a tradition for generations of ranchers. Brands allow for quick and permanent identification of animals, and can be applied with minimal discomfort when care is taken not to burn through the hide.

Cleanup and bear spray – a busy weekend ahead for CCS

By Brad Quarin The Crowsnest Conservation Society has a busy weekend ahead, participating in a riverbank cleanup with the Royal Bank of Canada, followed by an informative session on bears.

Volunteers for the cleanup, including at least three RBC employees, will meet across from the Blairmore Legion parking lot at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

“It’s always something that needs doing,” says Merilyn Liddell of the conservation society. RBC had approached them looking to do an activity benefiting the community, simultaneously making a $1,000 donation to the group.

RBC teller Brenda Sagrafena explains the bank chose to support the society again because it does interesting and important things.

“The conservation society was a very easy choice,” Brenda says. The cause fits with RBC’s Blue Water Project, which aims to protect fresh water. In addition, the bank will be supporting three other causes with volunteer work and $1,000 donations, namely the Crowsnest Pass Food Bank, the Crowsnest Historical Society and the SPCA. Although the riverbank is relatively clean

now, the volunteers will check out areas that may have been missed during Pitch-In Week, Merilyn says. She’ll be taking part herself.

As a non-profit organization, the society definitely appreciates the donation, “no strings attached,” Merilyn says. It’s uncertain how the money will be spent, but Brenda expects it will be put to good use.

On Sunday, the society will host a bear safety training session for a second time. The two-hour session is an abbreviated form of the old bear education evening, and ran for the first time last September.

“It was really well received,” says Elizabeth Anderson of the conservation society’s BearSmart program, who’ll be an instructor in the session. “They thought it was really informative.”

Participants learn to differentiate between black bears and grizzly bears, which Elizabeth says isn’t as straightforward as some may think. The audience will also learn how to act around bears and how to use bear spray, specifically when to use it, where to aim and from what distance.

Elizabeth, who has a master’s degree in ecology, is interested in keeping bears out of people’s yards for safety reasons. She doesn’t

feel many people know how to live in an area with bears.

In addition to instructing the session with Fish and Wildlife officer John Clarke, Elizabeth is co-ordinating the event, a job made easier by the outdoor location. It’s being held at the hairpin turn on the road to the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre. That’s a spot Elizabeth says is easy to reach, but “still gives that feel of being in the bush.”

Participants will be able to try out a spray – without the pepper contained in real bear spray. John will bring one of his bear dogs, which Elizabeth says can act like a bear.

The bear safety session, which starts at 10 a.m., is free and open only to the first 20 people who sign up by calling Elizabeth at 403-563-0058.

The event is made possible by a grant from Shell FuellingChange.

Besides the session, the BearSmart program has other projects, including monitoring bears and educating the public by knocking on doors, Elizabeth notes. The Apple Network can give you a hand cleaning unwanted apples from your trees, since apples might attract bears. The fruit then goes to someone who does want it.

Fun, new programs at the pool

By Brad Quarin Staff at Crowsnest Pass Community Swimming Pool are thinking outside the box to encourage people of all ages to enjoy the pool, says manager Kim Miskulin.

To that end, they’ve been considering the needs of kids, adults and the elderly in coming up with this year’s pool programming.

“I’m really excited to work with families in the community,” Kim says. “I love community service, and I get excited about programs. I get excited watching the youth get excited and engaged as well. It’s going to be a fun summer.”

For tots, new things include preschool lessons at the pool in June. Pool staff are also planning an adult open swim, with lane swimming. Some people might have health issues such as arthritis, and the waters are available to help with rehabilitation, Kim says.

In the last two years, more adults have been coming to the pool for physical fitness reasons, with much more lane swimming. “People in the area are more aware of and wanting to choose healthier lifestyles,” she says.

To meet their needs, the pool staff want to start an aqua boot camp and a master’s program.

The aqua boot camp would be meant to challenge swimmers aged 16 and up, with the pool serving as a “liquid gym.” The master’s program would teach better endurance and strokes.

On June 20, Chuck Lee of the Pinch o’ Crow Creekers kayak club will be at the Blairmore pool for the first time to provide kayak instruction and raise awareness about the club. Kim says she’s never kayaked and would like to try it with her daughter.

An early opening this year has allowed school phys-ed classes to get more involved with the pool. For the first time, Crowsnest Consolidated High School is including pool activities in its curriculum. Kim is pleased with the development and wants to teach CCHS students lifesaving skills.

Currently, not many kids are pursuing an experience as lifeguards, so there are plans to offer the junior lifeguard program for the first time in 10 years. “It’s an excellent leadership program for the lifeguards,” Kim says.

Deck parties and even a movie night might be on the table for the pool as well. “There’s just so much to fit into such a small season.”

She feels Crowsnest Pass Community Swimming Pool is unique as “a youth-led organization.” Much of the planning and execution of pool programming is done by people between 16 and 30. Her 10 staff members are all trained lifeguards, and she describes them as good leaders and friendly. Kim herself started out with the pool as a lifeguard in 1990.
