My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin For about a month, I’ve been photographing an osprey as he keeps watch on his family from a perch high in a treetop.

The raptor is always there, or at least nearby, regardless of the time of day I stop by.

At first I took pictures from the car window, but some of the best ones have been taken standing directly below the high branch that is his regular perch.

He appears to be as curious about me as I am about him. With a camera and large lens in front of my face, I likely appear to him as a strange one-eyed creature with a tuft of blonde hair!

I’ve captured images of him in a few funny poses, as he turns himself almost upside down to get a better view of me.

If I were on the other side of the river, where his mate sits in her nest, he might look at me differently, but he seems to know that I’m not a threat to him.

Osprey tend to mate for life, and I find myself wondering how many years this fellow has guarded his nest and his mate.

There may be chicks already, but it’s hard to know because the nest is quiet. The mother’s head is visible above the nest, but there’s no sign of little heads yet. I’d love to have a bird’seye view to know what’s going on way up in that nest of sticks.

As I have enjoyed the quiet time watching this bird doing fatherly duty, it has made me think about fatherhood in general.

To me, this bird portrays many of the same characteristics as human fathers.

For weeks, he has kept vigil over his mate and their nest, just as expectant fathers do for their pregnant wives.

I’ve watched him swoop away only to hover over the nest a few minutes later with a small stick or branch. Perhaps this can be likened to chores like painting the nursery or general house maintenance.

Once in a while he cheeps quietly before taking flight from his tree. He sees things I don’t notice, like a fisherman on the other side of the river.

The man walks near the nest without looking up and carries on down the riverbank. The osprey flies to a nearby treetop where he can keep a closer eye on a potential threat to his family.

This is something fathers do – they protect their families.

This raptor’s defensive weapons are his sharp, curved beak and long, round talons. He likely weighs no more than four pounds, but with a five-foot wingspan, I imagine he could easily take on a full-grown man.

I wonder what kind of father he’ll be.

Will he snuggle into the nest when the chicks hatch? Or will he stick to the so-called manlier duties of catching fish for his family and keeping the nest in good repair? Will he patiently wait until each chick is ready for a first flight, or will he push them to fledge? Will he flex his talons when his daughter brings home her first date?

The father osprey will teach his offspring to fish and to survive. It’s really not much different than what human fathers do.

Human family dynamics have changed considerably in recent years. Today’s father isn’t always the head of a nuclear family. Instead, he may be single, in a same-sex marriage, a stepparent or a grandparent.

Some fathers choose to stay home with their children, putting their careers on hold while they tend to a job more important to them. I know one who would never take back the experience.

Every family is different, but every child benefits from the affection, guidance and presence of their father figure.

To my Dad, and to all fathers who watch over their families with love and pride – happy Father’s Day!

Anniversary of Hillcrest mining disaster Residents of the small mining town of Hillcrest Mines woke to a clear, blue June sky.

Morning shift came on duty at 7 a.m., another day in what was considered the safest and bestrun mine in Crowsnest Pass.

Certainly none of the 250 men on their way to work that morning had any inkling that two hours later they would be part of a tragedy that would forever form part of our national identity.

On June 18, 1914, a town of 1,000 lost 189 men, 130 women became widows and close to 400 children were left fatherless in a massive explosion – the worst mining disaster in Canadian history.

Ninety-nine years later, extensive preparations are underway to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Hillcrest Mine Disaster, and to honour the spirit of the men and women who formed Canada’s earliest coal mining communities and one of its cornerstone industries.

From June 19 to 21, 2014, Crowsnest Pass will host dignitaries, entertainers, family members and other Canadians to remember those who lost their lives and to celebrate the spirit of the mining community.

Anne demonstrates great community service

By Brad Quarin Anne Molnar is this year’s recipient of Lundbreck’s citizen of the year award, and she was surprised to get it. “It made me feel special,” she says.

Response to the award she’s received has been positive. “Everybody’s so happy. They’re congratulating me left, right and centre,” she says. “Makes you feel loved.”

The award came from the Lundbreck Citizens Council, a volunteer group aiming to make Lundbreck a better place. Anne is a director on the council, but a few missed meetings meant she was in the dark about the honour.

Her contributions to the community go further than the citizens council. She’s been on the volunteer fire department for 12 years and has served as fire captain for five or six years. Anne is an emergency medical responder, meaning she’s registered to work on an ambulance, and also keeps an eye on the community with Citizens on Patrol.

Fire Chief Dave Cox says he values Anne’s commitment to the Lundbreck department, and she is among its most dedicated members.

Besides being a guardian of Lundbreck, Anne is also appreciated for managing O’bies, the town’s convenience store, gas station and post office. “She makes O’bies,” says senior citizen of the year George Dowson.

“She’s been there forever, as far as I can tell.”

Originally from New Brunswick, Anne arrived in Lundbreck 19 years ago.

Lundbreck would benefit from its adopted daughter, as Anne joined the volunteer fire department, figuring the work would be interesting. “Sounded exciting,” she says. Sometimes it is exciting, but sometimes it can be sad, as the group handles everything from fires to car accidents to pulling cats from trees. “We see it all.”

Anne Molnar is Lundbreck’s citizen of the year – an honour recognizing her valuable contributions to the community.

Despite some traumatic moments, she has stuck with the department for over a decade. “I actually like it,” she says. “I just like the adrenaline rush. I like helping people.”

Dave says Anne became fire captain because of her “great community service” and dedication. She took the offer of the promotion, which entailed maintaining the crew. “At the time, it didn’t seem like a big deal,” she says.

It can be hard finding volunteers, but the department has six. “Which isn’t bad, really, for a town of 300.”

As a concerned citizen, Anne began

attending meetings of the Lundbreck Citizens Council and was eventually asked to join. She became a director and secretary for the organization and gets to vote on motions.

George, the council’s treasurer, has good things to say about her. “Anne’s a great girl.

You need her to do something, she’s first in line to help.”

“We try to get the public involved in all of our stuff,” Anne says, describing the council’s work, and they’re also supporting the Lundbreck Gardeners group to help beautify the town.

When Const. Doug Sokoloski of Pincher Creek RCMP approached the council to start a Citizens on Patrol in Lundbreck, Anne became involved in that, too.

She’s been driving through the community for three years, looking for any illegal activities to report. “You’re just an extra hand for the RCMP,” she says, but fortunately there aren’t a lot of serious crimes here.

A citizens council activity that involves more hard work is managing Cornfest, an annual day of fun for the town. Anne has helped sell 50-50 tickets, worked at concession, collected donations and organized the baseball games.

“I just tell them, ‘Put me where you need me,’ ” she says.

She used to play baseball herself, for Lundbreck and against Cowley on Canada Day, but Cornfest got in the way last year.

She was in minor baseball as a girl and later was in the slow-pitch league in Pincher Creek. It was a hobby, though she doesn’t consider herself particularly athletic.

Previous sports triumphs include a trophy for log rolling in New Brunswick when she was 12.

The citizen of the year award ought to be another valued trophy for her.

Cowboys and poets gather in Pincher Creek this weekend

By Brad Quarin For a 26th year, Pincher Creek will be promoting cowboy culture with the Cowboy Gathering, to be held Thursday to Sunday at the Horseshoe Pavilion and the Community Hall.

Folks from ranch and rodeo backgrounds in Alberta will be coming to share their music, stories, poetry and art, “all from the heart,” says the Gathering’s Janet Barkwith.

The event is meant “to honour the cowboy,” who faces problems with humour and grace.

The performers will include some local talent, such as John Wort Hannam of Fort Macleod, a singer and guitar player. John has performed at the Cowboy Gathering before, and has since become famous and performed at the London Olympics, Janet says. They asked him early to come to the Gathering and he was happy to do so.

As well, musician Dusty Dee Litchfield hails from Fort Macleod, and Bob Davis of Cowley will be performing music along with Noel Burles, who lives in Lethbridge.

Janet says the cowboy music is somewhat

distinct from country, focusing more on cowboy life and including some funny and sad songs. Almost all of the performers sing and play an instrument, usually a guitar, fiddle or keyboard. Music has become more important to the Cowboy Gathering because it gets more positive response, she says.

Those who attend can also look forward to the new fine art sale, with western-themed paintings, photography and pottery from Nanton on display and available to buy. Also new this year is the Cowboy Challenge on Friday and Saturday, Janet says. People and their horses will face obstacles like going over a see-saw or through a curtain, which a horse would think is a wall.

Once again, the Cowboy Gathering will also include the Family Fun Rodeo. Up to 10 teams, mostly local people with some outside interest, can take part in the non-competitive events. These include goat tying, in which people on horses try to tie down a goat, and team sorting of calves.

been part of the Cowboy Gathering. He has been involved in it since the beginning.

Brian is particularly excited about the mutton milking, which is “lots and lots of fun.” Teams will have to milk sheep for a few ounces. It’s a safe activity and amusing to watch, as many kids participating haven’t milked sheep before.

Prizes will be given out at the rodeo event, and will be spread out as much as possible. The deadline to register, by calling Brian at 403-628-2290, is Friday.

Waterton Wildflowers

By Brad Quarin Waterton Lakes National Park is a special place, with one of its wonders being the wildflowers. A weeklong celebration of this unique feature, the Waterton Wildflower Festival, starts this Saturday.

Beth Towe of the Trail of the Great Bear ecotourism company lives in Waterton and feels it stands out for its location in the Rockies, its residents and its “extraordinary beauty.”

“I hope I’ll always live here,” she says.

She says some people consider it “the wildflower capital of Canada,” with some flowers found only there. According to the festival’s website, the park boasts 50 per cent of all wildflowers in Alberta.

Trail of the Great Bear, a private company based in Waterton, has provided tours for 30 years, and the company also promotes conservation. The festival, which is going into its 10th year, fits with that goal in raising awareness for wildflowers, teaching the value of national parks and letting people have fun.

“We like to invite people to come to Waterton and enjoy the fantastic national park,” Beth says. She’s excited the festival has been going for this long and wants it to continue growing.

This year’s festival offers hikes, educational programs, photography, and a second visit and presentation from prominent botanist George Scotter. There will be a variety of scientifically accurate drawings and paintings of wildflowers, and a Blooms Beyond Borders talk on the wildflowers of the larger region.

New collectible pins and shirts will be available.

The educational courses vary in time, often lasting two and a half hours, and cover numerous subjects, Beth says. These include orchids, violets and wintergreens, bluebird nesting boxes and the relationship between bears and wildflowers.

Entertainment will also be provided at the festival, with music at the United Church and Waterton Lakes Opera House.

The Waterton Wildflower Festival should appeal to anyone who loves the outdoors or is interested in Waterton. The event often draws a crowd of 500 people, including visitors from foreign countries. The audience has been primarily adults, with a few excited kids.

By Brad Quarin A cheque, big in more ways than one, was handed over to the Canadian Cancer Society by the Kananaskis Pro Rodeo on Friday.

Jackie Sudworth, who’s in charge of Tough Enough to Wear Pink Day at the rodeo, says the $1,200 donation this year was unusually large. “It was an awesome year,” she says.

The money was raised partly through auctioning a cattle hide donated by Teck Coal.

The hide was purchased by Dean Bennett and

Eileen Gettman of Crowsnest Pass, who were also present at the cheque presentation at the Blairmore hospital. As well, the rodeo sold bracelets, ribbons and bandanas to raise funds.

Ben Kwan, a revenue development coordinator from the Canadian Cancer Society in Lethbridge, appreciates the donation. “A lot of these fundraisers go a long way to helping fight against cancer,” he says.

This money will go to supporting cancer patients and research.

Anna sets a standard for youth excellence

By Brad Quarin For Anna Koevoet, who’s in Grade 8 at Crowsnest Consolidated High School, volunteer work is not work at all.

“I like helping people who need help and who want it, and it’s fun,” she says.

For a second year, the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass celebrated young volunteers with the Order of Crowsnest Pass Outstanding Youth Award, which this year went to Anna.

For Cheryl Cann, who worked at the Crowsnest Pass Literacy Foundation where Anna tutors, the win was no surprise. She was one of Anna’s nominators.

“She’s very positive, she’s up for anything,” Cheryl says.

Teacher Lori Prentice, who’s on the committee that discusses the youth award, describes Anna as very outgoing, and Marcy Purcha of the literacy foundation calls her very dedicated.

“She’s always been like that,” says her mom, Paula, who adds Anna is kind and thoughtful, as are her other daughters.

Anna’s sisters include her fraternal twin Megan, Sydney and Monica.

Paula explains that Anna’s participation in volunteering began with her involvement in various clubs, as she would help raise funds for the swimming, soccer, judo and gymnastics clubs.

In Grade 7, Anna began volunteering for the literacy foundation at Isabelle Sellon School, tutoring a younger student. Cheryl trained her, and says Anna understood her role as a teacher and mentor. Marcy and Paula agree Anna is “a natural teacher.”

“I like seeing the growth and change,” she says. She enjoys reading and knows how essential it is to the learning process. During lunchtime each week, she’ll go to the library and read and play a literacy-themed game with her pupil. This is meant to improve comprehension, vocabulary and spelling.

“I’m seeing lots of progress with the student I’m paired with,” she says, and she forms “strong bonds” with the kids.

Marcy says Anna employs many styles, but mainly she determines what her pupils like to do and builds a good relationship with them.

Anna’s community involvement is scarcely limited to tutoring. In fact, Lori says whenever they need volunteers at CCHS, Anna is always there and is mindful of social

issues. Bonnie Kawasaki, who works with the municipality, says Anna is quite aware of her surroundings.

Along with Kestrel Paton, Anna, as a member of student government, helped organize We are Silent in April, in which students obtained pledges to refrain from all talking for 24 hours. The project supports children around the globe who are denied basic rights, effectively silenced. She encouraged other students to take part and went silent herself, which was difficult because she says she talks a lot. It was a school day and a couple of kids couldn’t do it, but Anna says it was “lots of fun.”

She also found much enjoyment at camp last summer, when the Nippon Institute of Technology put her together with a Japanese student. They rode horses and went rafting, and shared their cultures.

This paid off in a big way when she became one of two Canadian students selected to go to Japan in March. Anna’s sister Sydney had been there before and told her what to expect.

“Japan was amazing,” Anna says, as she saw some of the schools and temples there.

The Japanese schools were quite different, as they were enormous, the kids wore uni-

forms and they had mechanics and welding shops, she says. She also visited the Japanese Disneyland, having never been to the one in California.

Anna still talks with her Japanese friends on Facebook and email, in a mix of Japanese and English since they’re not totally fluent in each other’s languages.

Cheryl had gone to Japan with Anna and got to know her better on the trip, finding her lively and nice, “a really cool kid.” Anna is also “very well-rounded,” Cheryl says, because she’s also a judo champion.

The Koevoet family, besides Paula, have been practising the martial art for eight years, giving it a try because a friend was doing it.

This would bring Anna to the international judo championships at West Edmonton Mall, where she competed against a girl from British Columbia. The opponent was skilled, but Anna scored a gold medal.

“It was a really pretty medal, and I loved it.”

It was also a learning experience because Anna could see the techniques of the other participants, some from far-off places like Japan, Turkey and France.

You might expect all these extracurricular activities would take their toll on her schoolwork, but according to Mayor Bruce Decoux she has a 95 per cent average. That may be her proudest achievement. “I’m proud of myself for doing my best and trying my hardest,” she says. Her favourite subject is math.

Somehow, she finds time for everything.

“Most of the time, it just works,” she says.

A week ahead of volunteer recognition night, Paula got a call that her daughter would receive the Outstanding Youth Award.

They asked her to keep it a secret, which wasn’t a problem. “We like surprises,” Paula says. She told her daughter they were going because Paula takes part in the Mentoring Moms program.

When the mayor was addressing the crowd and describing the winner before naming her, Anna realized he was describing her. The mayor said the winner moved to the Pass in 2009, which was when Anna came with her family from Marathon, Ont. Paula says she is very proud.

Anna doesn’t know yet what she’s going to do after school, but teaching is a possibility.

She seems likely to succeed in anything.

Writing his way into history

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek’s native son Fred Stenson was among those honoured with a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Currently residing in Cochrane, Fred is an accomplished wordsmith who’s written a variety of historical novels, humour, short stories and non-fiction works, including documentaries.

He received the prestigious medal from Premier Alison Redford and Lt.-Gov. Donald Ethell at Calgary’s Mount Royal University in November.

To Fred, the medal is an example of democracy in action. As a contributor to Alberta Views magazine, he isn’t a fan of the current federal government or the provincial one. The fact that he was honoured by the government means the medal isn’t a form of patronage.

On a personal level, he is proud of the medal, calling it “a nice surprise, it’s good.”

“Honours are important,” Fred says. “It’s nice to know society is behind you.”

It’s no mystery why Fred was given one.

He’s done well enough as a writer to be profiled in The Canadian Encyclopedia and on Wikipedia, helped found the Writers Guild of Alberta and directed the Wired Writing Studio in the Banff Centre.

Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village curator Farley Wuth feels Fred is very deserving. As a descendant of Pincher Creek pioneers, Fred has visited the museum for special events. Farley describes Fred as “very sociable, very friendly, very enthusiastic about Canadian history.”

Farley credits Fred’s writing with helping to popularize Canadian history, and adds his writing style flows.

In particular, Farley liked The Great Karoo, calling it a “very fascinating read” that illustrates Pincher Creek’s connections to South Africa.

Although Fred studied economics in university, he developed his passion for fiction while going to St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek. He read a lot on the bus.

“I really worshipped the reading of fiction,” he says, and he was “so amazed by what fiction writers were able to achieve” in creating alternate universes.

In his own work, rather than creating totally new alternate universes, his historical fiction fits into the historical record. Filling holes in the records of lesser-known people allows for more creative licence, he says.

However, while his last three novels are historical, Fred notes that is not all he does.

Besides the Diamond Jubilee Medal, Fred’s writing has also earned him two Grant MacEwan Author’s Prizes. However, Fred says the honours feel “quite different,” and that the medal recognizes him more as a citizen.

Indeed, the Writers Guild of Alberta, which he helped shape, provides a network for Alberta writers who share a lonely career, while the Wired Writing Studio offers good feedback for writers. “I’ve always believed that good mentors make good writers,” Fred says.

“It all adds up to a pretty interesting career.”

Walking for mental wellness

By Shannon Robin Randy Lynn Rinaldi – along with her dad, Randy, and sister Julie – hopes to see you this weekend at Darcy’s Walk for Mental Wellness in Bellevue.

Last year almost 200 people came out for the annual event, raising over $7,600.

The walk has been a means for the family to heal after wife and mother, Darcy Rinaldi, took her life in 2007. Their goal is to raise awareness and funds for mental health initiatives in Crowsnest Pass.

This year was originally planned as a hiatus for the event. “We wanted to take time to focus on getting some projects going, and had realized we can’t do it all,” Randy Lynn says.

Plans changed, though, after the passing of her brother, Kelly Rinaldi, last month.

Kelly had his own mental health struggles, and Randy Lynn says the walk was “very, very important to him.”

“He understood the importance of raising awareness for mental health in the community and helped a lot of people,” Randy Lynn says.

“People felt comfortable coming to him.”

Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to overcome his own challenges.

Randy Lynn says the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation suggested the walk should go ahead after Kelly’s death.

This year, the walk will be in memory of

both Darcy and Kelly.

Members of the health foundation have assisted with many tasks Randy Lynn and her family would normally have looked after, and this year the family will be able to walk together rather than organizing.

“It made sense to go ahead and do it,” Randy Lynn says.

Money raised has been used to create a comfort room at Crowsnest Pass Health Centre and to provide resources for Blairmore mental health. This included covering the salary of a social co-ordinator to organize activities for people going through mental health issues. A $1,000 scholarship has been offered to a CCHS student going on to post-secondary studies in the health sciences field.

Future plans include an awareness campaign for elementary and junior high students along with a community initiative. Mental Health First Aid training for first responders, RCMP members and teachers is another project that proceeds from the walk may help fund.

Plan to join the Rinaldi family this Saturday as they walk to raise money and awareness for mental wellness and the benefits of physical activity, in memory of Darcy and Kelly.

Registration begins at 9:15 a.m. at Fireman’s Park, with the walk following at 10. Randy Lynn hopes to see about 300 people attend.

Childcare award for Catherine

By Brad Quarin Once again, Children’s World Daycare in Pincher Creek has been recognized for excellence in childcare.

Catherine Oczkowski won the rural daycare award in the provincial Early Learning and Child Care Professional Awards of Excellence in May. She is the third employee of the daycare to receive the honour, says director Leanne Wiebe.

A warm young lady, Catherine loves her job, finding it very rewarding. “You come in every day and get to see the children, and get to play all day – it doesn’t really feel like work a lot of the time,” she says. At the same time, she acts like a teacher for the kids, aged one to five. “I feel early childhood is like teaching, just with a younger group of children.”

When she was still in high school, she got involved with Children’s World Daycare as a volunteer, at the suggestion of a friend who worked there. “My friend knew I really liked children,” Catherine says. She comes from a big family with lots of little kids to play with.

At first it had been a bit of a struggle, because Catherine describes herself as quiet and shy, but she eventually settled in and began loving it. After high school, she continued working at Children’s World Daycare for a year to see if it was something she should pursue as a career. “I decided it was something that I loved, and I liked being here every day.”

So she went to Lethbridge College for two years to study early childhood education, and has good things to say about the program.

“Lethbridge College was an amazing learning experience, and I had so many great teachers

that were really inspiring,” she says. The program taught problem solving, guiding behaviour and health and nutrition. Today, if there are any behavioural issues with the kids, she can consult one of her textbooks, and she’s made suggestions for the Children’s World Daycare menu.

The program also included practicum experiences, one of which was at Children’s World Daycare. While the college classes were helpful, a textbook can’t teach you everything, so being at the daycare itself is educational regarding how to work with parents, kids and co-workers.

To Catherine, Children’s World Daycare is special because of her experience there. “It had a place in my heart, and I wanted to come back and bring new knowledge.” She says she was welcomed back as if she were family.

Her work there is a mix of structure and play, outdoors and in the gym. There’s snack time and quiet time, and activities based on learning and the kids’ interests. One outside walk taught kids about shapes, as kids looked for certain forms.

One educational thing Catherine did that went over really well was having the kids dig for worms. Parents were thrilled that their kids, once afraid of worms, were now fascinated by them.

A highlight of the job is seeing kids learn and putting the lessons to use. Although there aren’t many bad days, the lowlight might be the occasionally time-consuming task of planning. While the job is like play, the real work happens at home, when she puts together the lessons. That work is, in turn, rewarded with “the look on their faces.”

Care Professional Awards of Excellence and were both finalists.

Catherine discovered she had won and went to the dinner and ceremony in Calgary to collect her award, among 13 other recipients. “It felt really great to be recognized,” she says.

Leanne is proud of Catherine and not totally surprised, given the quality of her work. Leanne describes her as “very professional, very interested in what the kids want to do.”

From here, Catherine wants to stay in daycare work and then go on to teach childcare in college, drawing on her experiences.

Memorial golf tournament assists with hospital equipment

By Brad Quarin Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation has a wish list of useful hospital equipment to buy, and a golf tournament and fundraiser designed to make those wishes come true.

This year, the goal of the Kathy Allsop Memorial Golf Tournament, to be held on June 21, is a GlideScope. It’s a video laryngoscope which lets one see a patient’s airway and helps medical professionals to place a tube into the patient.

“This is something that will be used frequently in our emergency room,” says Joan Koinberg, an administrative assistant at the hospital and a secretary in the foundation.

She has been involved in the golf tournament since the beginning, 11 years ago, and helps to co-ordinate it, collect funding and register golfers.

This is the second year the tournament bears the name of Kathy Allsop, a nurse and member of the foundation board. The event was previously called the Bedpan Open Golf Scramble.

Kathy was Joan’s boss. “She was amazing, she was the most kind-hearted, generous person,” Joan says. “She was also an amazing boss. She was understanding and supportive.” Unfortunately,

conceived by the group as a fundraiser for the foundation, along with a curling bonspiel. The golfing turned out to be the more popular event and has endured.

“Everybody that comes always has lots of fun.

We have a lot of repeat golfers that come back every year, along with new golfers,” Joan says. Last year, the event drew the maximum of 120 golfers and raised over $51,000, thanks in part to a generous donation from Teck Coal.

The event is successful as a fundraiser, but could always do even better. “The more we get, the more benefits patients in the Crowsnest Pass hospital [get].”

While golfers pay a $120 registration fee, that’s not how most of the money is raised, Joan says.

Although the majority of us honour our fathers on Father’s Day, most people do not know the history behind it or why it is officially celebrated in North America on the third Sunday in June.

Mother’s Day became official in 1914, but a day to honour fathers was not official until 1966. Acknowledging mothers on Mother’s Day results in the highest amount of long distance phone calls made in a single day, and record sales of flowers, cards and chocolates. It was the commercial success of Mother’s Day that encouraged businesses to lobby for a similar holiday celebrating fathers.

Having a special day dedicated to honouring fathers was an idea that Sonora Dod had while listening to a sermon at church on Mother’s Day. The sermon made her think about all her father had done for her since her mother had died in childbirth, leaving Sonora and her siblings to be raised by their father.

Sonora lobbied other churches in Spokane, Wash. to honour fathers in the month of June, because it was her father’s birth month. The first Father’s Day was then celebrated in Spokane in 1910.

The idea became popular over time when people lobbied Congress to establish the holiday in 1916, but it was not until 1924 that Calvin Coolidge made it a national event to “establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations.”

Today we just take the time to thank them for the love and care they give to their families. So don’t forget on June 16 to do just that!

Proceeds from coffee sold that day and the dollars donated for Rent-a-Tent paper cut-outs went to the cause, and both locations offered a variety of other Camp Day activities.

Blairmore’s Tim Hortons had face painting, a garage sale and windshield cleaning at drive-thru, says June Datulaypa. The RCMP, Mountain Radio and Servus Credit Union were among those who came to help collect donations. Camp Day benefits kids who might not otherwise be able to go to camp, and the Crowsnest Pass kids going are Faith Degrasf and Rachelyn Pinkerton.

Relax, they didn’t do anything wrong. Parents of kids of all ages have the option of coming to Walmart between 4 and 8:30 p.m. on Friday to put together a Child Find kit.

Elks member Charles Price explains a Child Find kit can be very useful should a child go missing. Parents provide information such as the child’s date of birth, and the kit will also include the child’s picture, fingerprints and hair samples for DNA. Should the RCMP find an unknown child, they can check the kits to help confirm identity.

Charles says the Pincher Creek Elks sponsored the Child Find program four years ago, and put together 60 kits. Often, schools will put the kits together and the RCMP will help.

The local club receives the kits from its national organization.

The kits are free and registration is not required for the event on Friday.

Your trash can be another’s treasure

By Brad Quarin This Saturday, Ranchland Mall’s parking lot will be the place for Pincher Creek’s E-waste/Toxic Roundup and Reuse Fair.

The community is coming together to promote the spring cleaning and recycling effort, with groups involved including the Rotary Club, the Pincher Planters, the Lions and Children’s World Daycare.

The day starts at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast courtesy of the Rotary Club, which will also be collecting e-waste until the end of the fair at 3 p.m.

Rotarian Dan Crawford, who is helping co-ordinate the event, explains e-waste is unwanted electronics like computers, printers and TVs. These electronics go to Red Deer, where chips will be taken out and reused and other pieces will be melted down. There will be a separate bin for items like microwaves, fridges, toasters, phones and clock radios, which can’t be recycled and are garbage.

The collection of e-waste is both a useful service to the town and a fundraiser for the Rotary Club, Dan says. At the same time, the club will have a 50-50 draw, with the prize rising all day.

A reuse fair also runs from 8 to 3. Al Roth, a director of operations with the town, explains residents can come with any household or yard items in good condition that they want to get rid of.

After dropping off something on one of the tables, residents can take something else in exchange. Al says this exchange brings in a lot of items, and very few are left at the end of the day to go to the landfill. As he notes, one person’s trash is another’s treasure.

The Pincher Planters will also be on hand to trade perennials, shrubs and other plants. “It’s the same idea,” Al says.

To get rid of paints, strippers and other chemicals, the toxic waste roundup will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Lunch is provided by Children’s World Daycare.

The fair is an annual event that takes place every Father’s Day weekend, and goes back about six years, Al says. It replaced an annual spring cleanup held by the town, with the fair creating a much lower cost for taxpayers.

Dan says lots of people know about the fair, show up and visit.

“It’s always fun,” he says.

Moreover, there are environmental benefits from the event. All in all, the fair is good for Pincher Creek.
