My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin How close to the mark do you think you’d be when speculating on where you’ll be, what you’ll be doing and who you’ll be doing it with, five years from now?

Five years ago, on Friday, the 13th of June, I first set foot in Pincher Creek. I would never have imagined where life has taken me in that short period of time.

The weekend was a whirlwind of forming impressions while exploring the town and surrounding area.

A stop in at the community hall gave Dennis and me a sample of the western flavour of Pincher Creek at the Cowboy Poetry Gathering. Strolling downtown had the same friendly atmosphere.

A short way down the road we found a different atmosphere when we stopped at the Twin Butte General Store for some Mexican eats.

At Waterton I saw my first black bear and snapped photos from the truck window as the small bear sauntered down the side of the road.

He was nowhere near as excited as I was!

I was captivated by all there was to see at Waterton as we drove to Cameron Lake and then to Red Rock Canyon, where we stuck our toes in the icy water.

As we wandered down a few trails, I noticed many unfamiliar flowers. It was interesting to learn that many of Canada’s rare flowers are found only in the park.

Like many tourists, we posed for pictures on the hill at the Prince of Wales Hotel and gazed down at the townsite and lake. I had passed through the mountains a few times before, but had never seen them up close and personal.

I got a taste of typical Pincher Creek weather when the wind picked up later that day – wow.

The towering windmills made more sense to me after that!

I was intrigued by this small community which boasted many amenities found typically in larger centres.

We made a quick trip to the Pass on Sunday before I returned home. I was struck by the immensity of Frank Slide and the natural beauty

as we drove higher into the mountains.

I picked up tourist guides and brochures, and was fascinated by the history of the municipality.

I was impressed by the events listings – it seemed there was more happening in this corner of southwestern Alberta than the city of Saskatoon, where I was visiting from.

I was only visiting, and at that time couldn’t have imagined that Pincher Creek would become my home a year later.

I’ve spent time at The Gathering and now understand what cowboy poetry is about.

I visit Waterton whenever I can, and during all seasons. This will be a long-standing love affair. Of course, we still stop to enjoy the food and entertainment in Twin Butte and to enjoy the view and hospitality at the Prince of Wales Hotel.

This week I’m taking in my first event at the Waterton Wildflower Festival and had a difficult time choosing which class to attend. It’s a perfect match with my interest in photography.

I’m also being proactive and becoming BearSmart. We often enjoy trail hikes in Waterton and Crowsnest Pass and I’m feeling more comfortable in the bush after a recent workshop.

There are so many historical places to visit and stories to learn about the area that I don’t know I’ll ever cover them all.

One can be a good citizen on a regional level, and I’m active as a volunteer and with activities in both Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass.

Through this I have met more wonderful people than I can count.

I continue to be impressed by the abundance of activities available for all ages. There is always something interesting to do and many unique events are hosted here.

Five years ago I crammed as much as I could into two days – I continue to do this every day and love that I should never run out of things to explore.

I arrived in the late evening darkness five years ago, with no idea of the awesome possibilities that lay in wait. I wonder what the next five years will bring.

Sketches from life

By Joyce Sasse The Waterton region is noted for having at least 50 per cent of the wildflower varieties in Alberta. It was Annora Brown who recognized the significance of these flowers and drew the attention of locals and Canadians to their beauty and poetry. It seems fitting to give her tribute in this Week of the Wildflower.

Rereading Annora Brown’s books, Old Man’s Garden and Sketches From Life, is a spring tonic for the soul. The abundance and beauty of the wildflowers in southern Alberta is something we take for granted. But there was a time when most of them were ignored. Who bothers with weeds?

Admittedly, Fort Macleod in the 1930s wasn’t a very attractive place – wind, dust, rock, depression! Within a short time after Annora completed art school in Toronto, she was called home to tend her invalid mother and her father. Caregiving and housekeeping didn’t leave much time for sketching and painting. Through a substantial portion of her life, these demands weighed heavily. Bills from her time in the East also had to be paid.

But Ms. Brown never went very far without her sketchbook and watercolours.

Sometimes she only got to the rock pile down the alley, but there she found precious wee flowers.

Sometimes, with a friend from the city, she would head off toward the Porcupine Hills. Later she habituated Waterton’s mountain slopes. The wildflowers spoke to her, and she tried to capture their poetry in paint. Extremes of weather, ravenous insects, and rocky ledges did not deter her.

She struggled not only with the elements, but also with political obscuration. Easterners couldn’t believe artists existed in the West. Urbanites couldn’t accept the work of a woman from Fort Macleod. But the quality of her work and the persistence with which she laboured demanded attention.

Today her work hangs proudly in many homes and galleries. A huge collection is housed in the Glenbow Archives in Calgary. When there is a public exhibition, enthusiasts want to see more.

One reviewer wrote: “When the lily blooms no more, should man be yet alive, Annora Brown will review for him the glory that was and advise him of the glory to be.” – Westart, 1972

Fashion and fundraising made a great mix

By Brad Quarin One summer about 14 years ago, Judy Cassidy visited Ruffles Boutique, a women’s fashion store in Pincher Creek.

“I always liked to talk to new people that came into the store and find out where they were from and what brought them to Pincher,” says the store’s former owner, Karen Andrew. This particular talk would be the start of something big – amazing fundraisers leading to a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for Karen.

Karen describes Judy, who was from Lethbridge and is now semi-retired in British Columbia, as being “bald as a cue ball and just gorgeous.” Judy was going through chemo for breast cancer.

“She just was very positive and upbeat,” Karen recalls, but Karen herself felt angry.

“She had two small boys at the time; I just remember thinking how unfair it was.”

Karen took a lesson from that conversation. “Instead of being mad about this, you have to do something about it.” As well, it made sense that a women’s boutique would serve women, and so began her campaign against breast cancer.

Cancer wasn’t a foreign concept to Karen at the time. Her aunt and mother-in-law had passed away from cancer in their 50s, and Karen is getting to be about the same age as her mother-in-law was. Karen had seen her mother-in-law go through all the stages and knew it was “not a nice journey.”

In a bitter twist, Karen herself would later be diagnosed with breast cancer, but she beat it. Judy Cassidy beat her breast cancer only for it to return in her other breast.

After meeting Judy, the first step was to visit her clothing suppliers and other local businesses to appeal for donations that could be raffled off in a fundraiser. Karen says Pincher Creek is “incredibly giving” and the

donations, including cash and merchandise, were generous. “Everybody got on board.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so in October 1999 they had their first fundraiser at the golf clubhouse. It was a fashion show that brought in about 120 people, recalls Karen’s friend Cindy Wright, and it was a “nice night out for the ladies.”

Cindy, who was also in the fashion business and whose mother-in-law had sold Ruffles to Karen, was eager to help a good cause and was involved from the start. She was a model, showing clothes that could be purchased.

At the fashion shows, people bought raffle tickets for prizes and all the money

went to breast cancer research, Karen says.

The tickets to attend the show itself were kept affordable. The events would grow from there.

Numerous people were also involved and, as Cindy notes, more were needed as the fundraisers grew. While it was a “huge community effort,” Karen spearheaded it, Cindy says. Karen says she accepted her Diamond Jubilee Medal on behalf of the many people behind the events.

Cindy says all the fashion shows were fun and “each and every one was a little different.” The models had fun trying on different clothes.

Each of the 10 fundraisers from 1999 to 2009 exceeded expectations, Karen says, with tickets sold out at Ruffles within 45 minutes. The first show raised $3,769, and this increased yearly. The final shows in 2008 and 2009 brought in about $55,000 each. In all, $300,000 was raised over a decade.

The money went to the Canadian Cancer Society in Lethbridge for breast cancer research. Karen feels they were extremely appreciative of the Pincher Creek efforts, and the society sent updates on cancer research.

“It is through the collective voice and actions of the Pincher Creek community that we will be able to bring an end to cancer,” says Carol Shaw of the society.

Cancer patients and the rest of the town expressed their thanks as well. “That was all the gratitude I ever needed, was to see the response of the community,” Karen says.

In December 2007, she was diagnosed with breast cancer herself, which came as a shock. “I don’t know why I thought I was immune from it,” she says. “I thought that was pretty ironic. But I also believe that the universe puts things in our path and I think I was just meant to do it.”

Thankfully, the cancer wasn’t terminal. After chemo and radiation, she’s still on medication for the next three years.

“It’s given me a whole new passion for life. I guess I’m grateful for the journey.”

She had been working at Ruffles, her “baby,” six days a week and had to reduce her role there after the diagnosis. “I discovered there is life outside of work,” she says. Eventually she sold the business to Amber (Queenie) Scott, but Karen still does the “fun things” there and gives Queenie advice.

The message from Premier Alison Redford’s office that Karen was nominated for a Diamond Jubilee Medal came as a “complete surprise.”

“I was just so shocked to have been nominated, and I do want to thank whoever did nominate me,” she says. “The medal is just the icing on the cake of being in Ruffles for 13 years, doing something that I absolutely loved.”

“It’s quite an honour,” Cindy Wright says. “She worked hard for it, and it’s great.”

“The Canadian Cancer Society wishes to congratulate Karen on her Diamond Jubilee award, and to thank her for supporting and caring about the women and their families living the cancer journey,” says Carol Shaw.

Now, Karen says she’s “watching the clouds go by.”

“I’m just enjoying my home, and being home,” she says.

“I’m enjoying the freedom of not being at a business.” She’s happy with the direction Ruffles has gone since she left.

While she wonders if she is deserving of the medal, people feel she did something important.

“She’s done a lot for breast cancer research,” Cindy says, calling Karen an “overall beautiful person inside and out.”

Let’s make Alzheimer’s a memory

By Brad Quarin The Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories held its walk supporting patients with Alzheimer’s and raising awareness in Blairmore for the first time last Saturday.

Diane Herrick, a manager of community relations with the society, says the nonprofit organization has held the walks for about 18 years in Lethbridge.

“This year we spread out into some rural communities,” she says. The day saw walks not only in Blairmore and Lethbridge, but also Medicine Hat, Edmonton, Red Deer, Grande Prairie and Yellowknife.

Around 30 people showed up at the Blairmore Elks Hall that afternoon, to walk about a kilometre around town. Participants included staff of the title sponsor Investors Group, with Carol Budgen leading the walk, local families, town councillor Brian Gallant and Bill Plante of Jaffray, B.C., with bagpipes.

Those taking the walk had an extra challenge to spot signs along the route and to remember what they said.

The Investors Group Memory Walk raised $2,500 in Blairmore, and Diane is pleased with the level of participation. The money will go to support programs in Crowsnest Pass.

The Alzheimer Society provides programs and services, such as counselling, to Alzheimer’s patients and their families. It’s also concerned with raising awareness.

“That’s why we wanted to come into the rural communities, is to let people know that we exist, and that we’re here to help them if they’re having troubles,” Diane says.

Carol says she’s happy to take part, since there has been Alzheimer’s and dementia in her family. She helped organize the event and says she is “looking forward to having it going on year after year.”

An ‘angel’ for the Pincher Creek Food Bank

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek Food Bank is receiving a helping hand to make its delayed move to a new building, while seeking needed funding.

Currently located in the Napi Friendship Centre, the food bank is planning to move to a former health food store. However, costly renovations and new flooring are required to meet health codes, and that’s what led Wayne Oliver to step in to assist.

“It was like an angel popping in here,” says Napi’s executive director, Sandra Gibbs.

An employee of TransAlta and a town councillor, Wayne says he drives by the old health food store every day and noticed the food bank wasn’t in there yet.

After talking to Sandra and learning of the financial issue, he set out to get a better quote on the flooring and put together a volunteer carpentry team. He considers the food bank to be “an important community service.” As well, he felt a duty to help as a town councillor, since council was previously unable to provide the food bank with a new location.

Sandra says in the first three weeks since Wayne came, he’s taken a look at the new building and worked on finding funding for the flooring.

He also cut the grass and planted potatoes with kids, making him “a real go-getter,” she says.

Wayne explains the kids are Scouts and Cubs, and he is a Scout leader. He and three kids weeded

the garden before planting the potatoes. The food bank wants to plant more vegetables in its garden as “a treat this summer,” but the potatoes are a nice start, Sandra says.

The required renovations include new flooring, vinyl tiles and shingling on the back of the building, with Wayne estimating the flooring will cost $4,500. He and a co-worker will be doing the shingling themselves, as Wayne is a journeyman carpenter and former shop teacher. “I love building stuff,” he says.

Once the renovations are complete, there will be a health inspection, and then the move, which Sandra hopes will be in early August. When moving day finally comes, carrying and transporting the food bank’s boxes will be challenging, but the Rotary Club is helping with that.

The benefits of the move should be worth it.

“It’s such a great location,” Sandra says, as the new building is more central in the community.

In the meantime, the food bank needs funding for more than just a move. It previously received funding from the Piikani band, but not now, and with no money the food bank would have to be run entirely on a volunteer basis.

Looking for support, Sandra says they’ve applied to the United Way, and should learn in July if they’ll be receiving help. United Way has many causes to choose from, so it would be great if they picked the Pincher Creek Food Bank.

Piikani chief and council and plans to approach town council to appeal for help, Sandra says.

The Piikani council pointed the food bank to their social development committee to apply for funding.

One thing the food bank has done to raise funds is hold a garage sale at the end of May, with staff bringing items to sell.

Others are helping in other ways. “We’re just pleased with the community support that we have, and without it, we wouldn’t succeed,” Sandra says.

Pedersen Transport in Pincher Creek ships food in from Calgary for free, which can save the food bank around $800. “That’s just tremendous.”

St. Michael’s School raised money for the food bank, while Canyon School brought in 17 boxes of food.

Canyon School teacher Lina Anastacio says the food was collected during the school’s Breaka-Rule Day, when each student brought food for each of the rules they chose to break. Students could break the rules by wearing hats in school, chewing gum and picking any playground to play on. Canyon School has two playgrounds for different age groups. The students brought in canned foods, cereal and pasta.

The Napi Friendship Centre has been running the food bank since 2010. Sandra says that since then, they’ve gone from 199 to 364 clients.

Sharing culture on National Aboriginal Day

By Brad Quarin Last Wednesday I had my first assignment at Peigan School out in the Piikani Nation, to see a powwow put on by vice-principal Linda Yellow Face and Blackfoot teacher Jean Davis.

The event, which the organizers told me was an annual school dance, was a sight to behold with dancing, colourful clothing and drumming.

It could be just a taste of what’s to come.

Friday is National Aboriginal Day, designated by the federal government in 1996 to honour the heritage and cultures of Aboriginal Peoples.

Alex Shade, chief of the youth council which is organizing many of the Piikani Nation activities, says the day doesn’t have a pre-contact basis, but it has some significance.

“It’s a day ... where we can express to the people who don’t live on reserves and people who do not understand us as native people, we can express our culture to them.”

But it’s not the only day Aboriginals maintain their cultures. “It’s year-round, it’s a lifelong thing,” he says.

For the Piikani, Friday activities will start at 9 a.m. with traditional Blackfoot games for kids at Crowlodge Park. The games often develop eyehand co-ordination and were designed to teach kids hunting or battle skills.

On Saturday, another powwow starts at 1 p.m.

The powwow isn’t a particularly old tradition for the Blackfoot, he says. “Powwows are more of a social event for us.” It’s also a competition, with prizes for the dancers.

National Aboriginal Day is also one of the biggest days of the year at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump near Fort Macleod, says program co-ordinator Quinton Crow Shoe.

The interpretive centre, opened in 1987 and dedicated to the lifestyle and mythology of the Blackfoot, has a number of activities planned.

There will be Blackfoot foods to taste and guided tours of the centre, as well as a shuttle service to the buffalo jump site. Drumming and dancing will start at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The centre will also benefit from a visit by the Alberta Birds of Prey from Coaldale. Eagles, owls and other raptors will be there on pedestals and visitors can hold them and get their pictures taken with them. Quinton says they’ve had the birds of prey at the centre before and they add a lot.

The interpretive centre staff look forward to National Aboriginal Day, seeing it as a start to a number of summer events, Quinton says. They have events throughout the year and new exhibits like Napi’s World, videos on creation stories.

Cadets wrap up the year flying high

By Brad Quarin Another year is over for the Crowsnest Pass Royal Canadian Air Cadets, who marked the year’s end by cleaning up a highway, flying on gliders and staging a parade.

The highway cleanup and gliding took place in May, and the parade and awards presentation for the official end of the year were held in Blairmore on June 3.

“It’s actually really fun, marching and going up in gliders,” says new cadet Ashley Vigna, who’s in Grade 7 and joined the cadets in January. “I’m happy I joined.”

Donavan Kingston, who has been in the cadets for six years and is a warrant officer, says the highway cleanup was a success. Most of the Crowsnest Pass cadets took part, though he was unable to. The cadets picked up garbage between the border and Lundbreck.

The highway cleanup is a significant fundraiser for the squadron, says Dan Desrosiers, who took over as commanding officer in a ceremony on May 27. The Alberta government pays the cadets by kilometre. Dan’s not sure yet how much money was raised this year.

Austin LeBlanc, another new cadet and a Grade 7 student, was among those who participated in the cleanup, and he’s glad he did. “It’s good for the environment, and people need to learn not to throw their garbage and stuff on the

highway,” he says.

A week later, the cadets took flights on a glider in Vulcan. “They loved it, lots of ear-to-ear grins,” Dan says.

Although Donavan is now too tall to fly in a glider, he calls past gliding – and the accompanying adrenaline rush – “a very, very fond memory.”

Dan explains the glider has no engine, and is towed with a cable “like a kite on a string.”

The cadets enjoyed seven minutes in the air and helped launch others by running with the glider, and some could control the glider’s flight. The cadets used to glide twice a year, but now just in the spring.

“It was fun,” says Ashley, who was in the glider for the first time. “It was like a slingshot, and you just fly backwards.”

Likewise, Austin enjoyed gliding, and he had previously flown a plane with an engine on a field trip in Lethbridge in Grade 6.

Afterwards, the cadets took in some Star Trek memorabilia while in Vulcan. Dan is uncertain how many Trekkies he has in the squadron, but there might be more, given the new movies.

Austin bought Spock ears.

Although they didn’t expect to have time, the cadets then made it to Nanton’s Bomber Command Museum, which was observing the 70th anniversary of an important air raid. Dan says they saw interesting displays, and Austin says

they were on the TV news.

The cadets practised a lot for the parade this month, Ashley says, and she was looking forward to it.

According to Dan, the parade shows a “high standard” of training in marching and movements. They arranged for the guest of honour at the parade to be Korean War veteran Donald Dalke, who lives in Lethbridge. Dan says he was pleased with getting Mr. Dalke and the cadets were excited about it.

The cadets also had aircrew survival training recently, learning skills to use if downed in a plane. Coming up this summer, they may take part in the Bellecrest and Canada Day parades, and some will be going to summer camps in locations like Manitoba and Cold Lake.

Austin will be going to a basic training camp in Penhold, and wants to go to the aerospace camp in the future.

Both Ashley and Austin say they will be back in the cadets next year, and encourage others to join. As Austin says, the experience brings benefits like flying planes, sports and various other activities.

The program has a lot to offer, Dan says, seeing as how not many kids get to ride a glider, and you can learn survival skills and marksmanship.

He also hopes to find more adults to help lead the cadets.

How you can support a unique museum

By Brad Quarin Bellevue Underground Mine is a unique museum, providing tours of a historic coal mine and true stories from miners, says Randy Pagnucco. “It’s one-of-a-kind.”

Randy is a board member of Crowsnest Pass Ecomuseum Trust Society, which runs the Bellevue mine and has a big vision for the museum.

Currently, the artifacts are kept in garage packages, which are a bit small. The society wants a whole interpretive centre, and Music for the Mine is a fundraiser to make it happen.

This is the second year for the gala, which is the brainchild of Rean Knight, president of the board of trustees for the society. This year’s event will start at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday at M.D. McEachern Community Centre, and will feature dinner, live music, dancing, auctions and raffles.

An interpretive centre would allow the Bellevue mine more room for displays and to be open year-round, Rean says. Currently, in the winter it’s open only for pre-booked private tours.

to train tour guides, for lunch and for storage, Randy adds.

The centre could be created by either replacing the garage packages or adding to them.

“Ideally, we would love to see it next year,” Rean says.

To that end, the gala will get rolling at 6 p.m. with cocktails and a silent auction. Items up for auction and draws were donated by individuals and businesses and include everything from bathroom sinks to gift certificates and printers. Rean adds there will be a draw for the best seats in the house, which come with gift baskets.

Dinner at 7:30 is catered by Country Encounters, which is serving a buffet including five-pepper chicken, roast strip loin and vegetarian alternatives.

Music will be provided by the Lethbridge group Texas Flood, who play just about everything, Rean says. They’re regular performers at the Greenhill in Blairmore.

Randy is helping out wherever needed and will be serving drinks at the gala.

Tickets cost $50 per person and are available

Métis Fest explores heritage and culture

By Brad Quarin After National Aboriginal Day on Friday, southern Albertans will have another chance to experience the heritage and culture of an Aboriginal People. The Métis Music and Cultural Fest will take place at the Great Canadian Barn Dance in Hill Spring from July 11 to 14.

Métis are descendants of both First Nations and European peoples and are recognized by the Constitution as one of the Aboriginal Peoples.

They can properly be regarded as a founding people of Canada.

However, according to local resident Roxanne Debroux, many people don’t know who the Métis are, and there’s little in southern Alberta to showcase their culture. That’s why she helped start the Métis Fest. This will be the second annual festival, and Roxanne, who is of Métis background herself, hopes it will be a lasting thing.

Métis “have a foot in both worlds,” she says, with an infinity flag standing for a blend of European and native cultures. Métis developed their own cultural practices and even their own language, Michif.

One unique aspect of their culture that will be celebrated at the festival is their musical style.

Roxanne describes it as upbeat and fast, and says it “makes you want to get up and dance.”

Shelly Groves of Crowsnest Pass, who with her husband, Tynan, will be teaching the musical style at the festival, describes it as more rhythmic and having different timing. She also says it has more emphasis on solo playing.

This will be her first time teaching at the Métis Fest, but she already teaches music and

enjoys it, “because music is awesome.” It’s a thrill when a student has a breakthrough, she says.

A special guest at the festival will be Alberta’s Calvin Vollrath, a renowned fiddler and composer. “He really wants to see this get off the ground,” and gave the organizers a great deal, Roxanne says.

Another musical guest will be Clinton Pelletier, who’s giving lessons at the festival.

Dancers will be coming from Kikino Métis Settlement in central Alberta. All of the musical guests were pleased to take part, Roxanne says.

The Métis Fest isn’t just about music, as there will be voyageur canoeing and Red River carts – boxes with two wheels pulled by a horse, illustrating Métis transportation during the fur trade.

There will also be beadwork, and Shelly will be among those learning how to make medicine bags. Throughout the festival, there will be activities like tomahawk throwing and using paintball slingshots, all echoing Métis tradition, except for the paintballs, Roxanne says.

She’s playing an organizational role in the festival, co-ordinating the volunteers and meeting with the Great Canadian Barn Dance. She says they’ve been supportive and have a wonderful location with a lake and campground.

Last year, Roxanne got plenty of positive feedback, some from people unfamiliar with the Métis, and she’s looking forward to how people will react this year.

The Métis Fest is open to everyone, with registration available until the day of the event by calling 1-866-626-3407. A one-day pass is $70 and a three-day pass is $165, with those prices including meals.

After the gala, the Bellevue mine is planning a miners picnic during the heritage festival in August, consisting of a barbecue, ice cream and kids’ games.

Pasta on the menu

By Brad Quarin Faced with a declining congregation and some bills to pay, Holy Trinity Parish, just off Main Street Blairmore, is turning to spaghetti for some salvation.

A spaghetti dinner and silent auction are planned for a fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, in the church basement. Everyone is welcome.

John Sciarra, who’s on the parish finance council, says the event will perform the dual function of a fundraiser and a social to meet their neighbours.

The atmosphere will be relaxed and there should be some laughs.

The idea came from the parish priests. John’s son and daughter-in-law go to a church in Calgary with a similar event.

The silent auction and door prizes come from donated items, and one item up for auction will be a painting by Father Ben Marino, whom John calls “a wonderful artist.” No one knows what the painting will be yet.

Other parishioners are donating money, meat and vegetarian sauces and lettuce for caesar salad.

Catholic Women’s League member Michelle Dobek-Koinberg will be playing piano.

John is a treasurer with the Knights of Columbus, who will help cook, clean, and serve dinner and drinks. There are about 50 Knights in the Pass and 20 active members, and they’ve supported the Pass Piranhas, Sole Survivor and arthritis fundraisers in the past. They also made a pancake breakfast at the floor hockey tournament to support Brenda Macdonald, who needs a double lung transplant.

Dinner costs $10 per adult and $5 per child, and will be followed by the annual garage sale and bake sale in September.

Annual cookout at Heritage Acres this weekend

By Brad Quarin Prime rib, roasted slowly to be “extremely tender,” is what’s for dinner at the Heritage Acres cookout on Saturday.

Rob Mitchell, president of Heritage Acres, along with lifetime member Alan Reed, will be cooking the beef, and says it will be “as good as you can get anywhere.” It will come with beans, mashed potatoes and rhubarb crisp for dessert, all prepared by volunteers and making for “a really good meal.”

Tickets are available for $20, right up until the event at 2 p.m. Supper is at 6.

Pincher Creek’s farm museum has been hosting a cookout for 13 years, an event conceived as a way to showcase and raise money for Heritage Acres.

Although there won’t be horse demonstrations as originally planned, the museum will be open and visitors can check out the historic buildings and interesting artifacts. As well, the tractors will likely be out, Rob says.

There will also be entertainment provided by the Schoening family, who sing country and old-time rock. Nicki Schoening says she and two brothers sing and play keyboard, guitar and violin. They haven’t performed at the Heritage Acres cookout before.

Although this year Rob isn’t expecting a huge profit on the cookout, plenty of planning goes into the event and he’ll be happy to see it play out. What money is raised supports the museum.

Big bucks for new history book A huge weight has been lifted off the shoulders of the staff, volunteers and curator at Pincher Creek’s museum. With the release of the local history book update, Prairie Grass to Mountain Pass, more energy can now be put towards the many other ongoing projects.

Spearheading the work on the history book was Farley Wuth, curator of the museum at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. “Our volunteer committee has researched, edited, written and

helped out in any way they can,” Farley says. “We are quite happy with the results.”

The books have been selling well, with a few still available at a cost of $125. They may be purchased at the museum. The 984-page volume is beautifully bound and would be a welcome addition to any history buff ’s library.

The certified first copy sold at auction to Rod Cyr for $1,200, with the profits benefiting the Pincher Creek and District Historical Society.

Bellecrest Days are here again!

By Brad Quarin This weekend, residents of Bellevue and Hillcrest and friends across Crowsnest Pass will come together to celebrate Bellecrest Days.

This year’s event, put on by the Bellecrest Community Association, will take place mainly at the Hillcrest Coal and Coke Park on Friday and Saturday.

Cory Schultz is an executive of the association. “Its goal is to improve the quality of life for people in specifically Bellevue and Hillcrest, but Crowsnest Pass in general,” he says.

The organization aims to do this by maintaining local parks and Bellecrest Community Campground, which campers can visit for a suggested donation, and by holding events.

The three main events are movie night, Santa in the Park and Bellecrest Days. Cory’s wife, Kim, who’s organizing the festivities, says Bellecrest Days have been celebrated since 1985, but separate celebrations in Bellevue and Hillcrest go back to the 1960s. She emphasizes this event is largely staged by volunteers rather than the

municipality.

Bellecrest Days features a parade on Saturday morning and children’s activities that afternoon, and this year a new event, bike decorating, is being added. “We’re always looking for new ideas to make it fun for the kids,” Cory says.

Decorations such as ribbons, balloons and pinwheels will be provided, thanks to sponsor Full Moon Adventures. After the bike decorating at 7 p.m. on Friday, there will be hotdog and marshmallow roasting and music, which Kim hopes will attract older youth.

Planning for the parade is underway, and it should include many floats, vehicles, horses and quads. Last year, there were 40 entries in the parade. This year’s parade will start at 11 a.m. and the floats will be judged by categories, Cory says.

Afterwards, kids can enjoy bouncy castles, face painting and a petting zoo with animals like lambs and bunnies.

Most events are free, but the pancake breakfast at the Hillcrest Fish and Game Hall on Saturday at 8 a.m. costs $6 for adults and $3 for

kids. There’s also a charge for the noon barbecue, which is a fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club.

The bake sale will be going on at the same time, put on by the Bellecrest Seniors as another fundraiser. “You know there will be lots of good stuff there,” Cory says. It should include bread, buns, pies, cookies and muffins.

Finally, the Hillcrest Miners Club will host a jam session from 2 to 6 p.m. The club’s secretarytreasurer, Elsie Linderman, says anyone can come and participate, and the music is country and western. There will also be food and a potluck.

The Bellecrest Days session is free, will last longer than usual, and will be the last of the season, with the next jam session being in September.

While Bellevue and Hillcrest usually take turns hosting Bellecrest Days, Cory says Hillcrest will probably be the scene for next year’s celebrations because of the 100th anniversary of the mine disaster.

Greetings from Crestview Lodge By the residents of Crestview Lodge - Pincher Creek

All our ladies enjoyed their Mother’s Day; they each got a beautiful rose and carnation from the lodge.

We ventured out to the Bright Pearl for Chinese food on May 15.

We enjoyed our birthday party, listening to the supreme musical entertainment supplied by Checkmate.

May birthday wishes go out to Judith D. and Lillian T. Charmaine T. and her daughters came with an abundance of Dutch treats, licorice, mints and cookies. They gave us information about life in Holland that was interesting.

They had costumes and wooden shoes and a history of their family. Thank you, Charmaine and girls, we had an awesome time.

Dick Waywood came and collected pop can tops. We had a whopping 22,125 for the making of wheelchairs.

A few of us had a “mooving” experience taking in the local 4-H day. We didn’t buy a steer, but wish to congratulate the kids on all their projects.

We needed a vacation, so a few of us went down to Canyon School to watch the musical entitled I Need a Vacation. Their performance included exceptional singing and acting as they took us on their holiday adventures.

Ann Nicols and her piano students had a fantastic two-day piano recital. The children

were very professional and talented, and the future of music is well assured. Thank you, Ann, for your dedication and generosity.

It was a lovely day for a strawberry tea at Heritage Acres. We saw lots of old friends and enjoyed a lovely lunch.

Several residents enjoyed a trip to Bellevue to take in the seniors conference.

The Cantare Children’s Choir from Calgary was touring southern Alberta, and stopped at Crestview on June 8. Thirty-six exuberant children aged eight to 12 wowed us with their musical ability. They stayed for cookies and juice, and visited with all of us.

We enjoyed delightful goodies at Celestial Sweets during one of our coffee outings.

We had an educational drive out to Hawkeye Stables, enjoying the countryside and reminiscing about where people lived.

Audrey B. provided the historical reviews and her son Jim gave us a tour of the stables.

We enjoyed a fireside snack and listened to Jim tell us more about their ranch, which was homesteaded in 1883.

Lynn T. brought nine children from Group Group Youth to assist us in spreading woodchips under and around our new trees.

We are very thankful for the help, and hope they come back to visit again.

Plans for the outdoor recreation area are coming along. We are looking forward to installing the firepit and paving the area. Can you smell the hotdogs yet?

By Brad Quarin The Crowsnest/Pincher Creek Landfill Association is giving back to its communities through Service Plus, a free new effort to help clean up the area’s towns.

With Lundbreck, Beaver Mines,Twin Butte and Pincher Creek done, Service Plus is coming to Crowsnest Pass on June 21 and 22.

The idea was conceived “as an opportunity to provide a service to the member communities at no charge to them,” says landfill manager Emile Saindon.

Emile explains they want to give back because although the landfill association is a non-profit organization, they treat it as a business and had a financially successful year. The income comes from tipping fees, contractors and the oil and gas industry, covering the costs of the equipment and labour.

For Service Plus, the landfill provides bins and some staff, and locals can take their unwanted household and yard items to the Coleman arena in Crowsnest Pass.

Appliances, tires, batteries and small bits of metal are among the things you can get rid of.

You can also bring paints, liquids and hazardous chemicals, but these are handled by the municipality in its toxic roundup, not Service Plus. If people bring electronics, Service Plus will point them to the municipality’s truck so they can be recycled.

Local public works co-operated with Emile in choosing times and places, and the MD of Pincher Creek is providing people to help Service Plus, he says.

For local residents, Service Plus offers a free chance to clean up their yards, and for the landfill it means good publicity and greater awareness of their operations. As well, Emile hopes to cut down on illegal dumping in the town, which happens a bit in ditches.

When Service Plus is done, it will be reviewed to see if it could be done again. “If the funds are there, we’ll continue the program,” Emile says.

After the Pass, Service Plus will next be offered at Cowley in the fall.

By Shannon Robin As a relative newcomer to Alberta’s bear country, I was excited to have an opportunity to take part in a recent BearSmart training session held in Crowsnest Pass.

Fish and Wildlife officer John Clarke and Crowsnest Conservation BearSmart co-ordinator Elizabeth led the class with help from John’s Karelian bear dogs Kuma and Koda.

We learned differences between black bears and grizzly bears, and indicators of bear activity.

Past scenarios from Alberta bear maulings were discussed with emphasis on what was done right and what could have been done differently.

Knowing how to react if you come across a bear is critical.

This has been a nagging fear of mine whenever we’re out in the woods. We carry bear spray, but I’ve never tried to aim and shoot, and worry that I wouldn’t act quickly enough during a stressful encounter.

I was sure there was more to it than simply pulling the pin and pushing the spray button, and

I learned I was right to be afraid of what I didn’t know. That lack of knowledge could be disastrous – knowing how to use your bear spray properly is as important as carrying it.

When we had an opportunity to attempt it, I actually had trouble popping off the safety clip – definitely not how I’d like things to play out if I was face-to-face with a sow bear and her cubs.

I also found myself instinctively continuing to walk toward the target rather than switching into reverse as I fumbled with the spray can. All this under low-stress circumstances!

Some had the opportunity to test their reactions while Koda, playing the role of an aggressive bear, rushed toward them. The dog ran fast, and apparently a bear can come at you even faster.

John talked about aiming low and stressed the importance of practising.

The workshop was a great opportunity to put ourselves mentally and physically into situations we can potentially encounter in our recreational activities. Take a course if you get a chance.

I’ll be practising and keeping my eyes open.

An emerald for Road Watch

By Brad Quarin Road Watch in the Pass, a project allowing the public to report wildlife crossings they see on Highway 3, received the community group award in Alberta’s environmentalist Emerald Awards.

Rob and Loretta Schaufele of Crowsnest Pass were in Edmonton earlier this month to attend the ceremony and pick up the award, with Loretta calling the experience “pretty amazing.”

There was a somewhat formal reception and live music, and a video was played about the finalists in this year’s awards. The video was awesome and it was interesting to see what’s going on around the province, Loretta says.

Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel presented the community group award to Rob and Loretta, the first award of the evening.

They gave their acceptance speech on the fly, which Loretta says was nerve-racking in front of 600 people, but they thanked the Miistakis Institute and the Emerald Awards. Most of all, Loretta says she thanks Rob. As well, they invited everyone to their science cafe on road ecology at the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre on July 11.

Afterwards, they had their pictures taken with the mayor and were interviewed for TV. Rob and Loretta get to keep the award, but they see it as belonging to the whole community.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Charlotte Mennear (nee Rondestvedt), who was called to be with the Lord on June 9, 2013 at the age of 78.

Charlotte was born on April 24, 1935 to Peder and Grete Rondestvedt in St. Walburg, Sask. At a very early age, she demonstrated incredible compassion and caring. She grew to be a beautiful and graceful young lady who captured the heart of a dashing young man, Larry Vernon Brown. They were married and blessed with a family of three children.

Charlotte’s courage and ability were truly tested with the passing of her husband. She raised her three young children on her own while furthering her education; her generous and caring nature led her toward the field of nursing, where she gained employment with the local hospital in acute and continuing care, physiotherapy and wherever she was needed most.

Charlotte found love once more with a kind and nurturing man, Donald Mennear, and together they increased their family to five children whom they raised with unconditional love. Her pride and joy was her family. She gave all she had and was always available for them. Her unique sense of humour and ready smile spread happiness in their home and inspired everyone around her.

She enjoyed needlepoint, knitting, camping, and cooking for family and friends. She loved the music of Elvis and Marty Robbins, bowling and Highland dancing. She was a past member of the Royal Purple and volunteer for many community events. Her hard work and heavy labour is now done – may she enter into paradise and find peace.

Those left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life include her children, Louise (Larry), Sherree (Jay), David (Mary), Dawn (Brent) and Jake (Chris); her grandchildren, Jimmy, Clayton, Tamara, Brandi, Danny, Billy, Kyle, Cassie, Mack and Ben; her eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and cherished friends.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Larry Vernon Brown and Donald Henry Walter Mennear; her father, Peder Rondestvedt; her mother, Grete Rondestvedt (nee Serigstad); her stepfather, Edward Storri; her grandchild, James David; her brother, Jacob Rondestvedt; and her sister, Sigred Dalzell.

The memorial service honouring her life was held on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel in Blairmore (13461 20th Ave.), with a reception following. Rev. Nicky Keyworth officiated. Cremation occurred at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel’s private crematorium.

25 hands on deck for St. Henry’s cleanup

By Lois Johnston There were groans and aching bones, but also cheers for the accomplishments of the morning, when the volunteers at St. Henry’s Church sat down for lunch on June 8.

They’d finished the annual cleanup and were more than impressed with the results. The interior of the church was shining, the windows were clean inside and out, the brush around the cemetery was cut and taken away, and the grass was mowed and the edges trimmed.

About 25 people came out for the cleanup, more than we’ve had in previous years. Some have been there every year; some were new to the challenge. Everyone grabbed a piece of equipment or a cleaning cloth and went to work.

We were especially grateful this year to have younger volunteers who willingly climbed the ladders to take down the windows for cleaning, and participated in the general maintenance of the grounds. Thanks to everyone for sharing the work!
