By Shannon Robin Last week at this time I was being a bit of a whiner. Production of the paper had been particularly challenging and I couldn’t shake a nasty sinus infection. “Poor me,” I snivelled.

I quit feeling sorry for myself in a hurry when a state of emergency was declared for Crowsnest Pass on Thursday morning and I saw what others were dealing with. The flash flood came hard and fast, leaving considerable destruction in its wake.

While the Breeze isn’t generally a news source, we did our best to share hourly updates, issued by the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass, warnings and alerts on our website.

The angry, muddy waters instantly became the focus of the nation and all the rage on social media. As bad as things seemed here, they were much worse north of us. The water was an unstoppable and formidable entity that showed no mercy.

I went on a tour to take pictures – none are inspirational. I think we’ve all seen enough of the ugly floodwaters, so with the exception of the front page comparison, I’ve chosen not to include flood photos in the print edition of the paper.

If you’re interested in seeing what I saw, and what others have shared, they are posted on our website. Most media images are of the damage, but there have been some positive photos as well.

For example, the beaming firefighter carrying an elderly woman, and the young man and his cat swimming away from a sinking truck.

I watched the television news with a combination of horror and curiosity and pondered how desensitized we’ve become to disaster. Terrible things don’t hurt us as badly as they should because we see them all the time. This sense of immunity is a scary thing.

I worried about my friend Angie who lives in High River. Her sister let me know she had left when water started coming into her house, and was safe in Okotoks. What a relief.

I awoke Saturday to a different story via text from my sister. It said, “Angie lost everything in the flood.” It was 5:30 a.m., and suddenly the flood was personal – it had hurt someone I care about.

I couldn’t get back to sleep and, after sending a text message her way, discovered Angie wasn’t sleeping either. She was sitting outside, alone, try-

ing to get her head around the events of the past two days.We spent the next few hours chatting by text and phone. My perspective of the flood changed considerably as she shared her experience.

Thursday started as a regular day. One of her sons was home from school sick, and she wasn’t aware of the flood threat until she looked up and saw water rushing toward the house. There was no emergency siren or alert, and she panicked for a moment before jumping to action.

She moved their pet bunny to the highest point upstairs, and grabbed insulin for another of her sons. In those few minutes, the water had already begun pouring into the garage.

Her van carried them about five blocks before stalling in the chest-deep water. With her son on her shoulders, Angie fought the current to get to higher ground. The water was cold, dirty and filled with logs and large debris.

She passed a woman trapped in her car and promised to come back – she needed to be sure her terrified son was safe first.

True to her word, Angie did go back, and it took all her might to open the car door against the power of the water. She saved a life, but as we spoke, I could tell that wasn’t registering yet. I imagine it will be a while before it fully sinks in that she did something amazing that day.

Eventually Angie was reunited with her two other sons, who had been evacuated from their school. The young boys joked that it’s a good thing their parents are divorced because it meant they had another house to go to in nearby Okotoks.

Many of their friends are sleeping in shelters, so they are lucky, indeed, to be together as a family under a comfortable roof.

As I sat with them there Saturday afternoon, it was almost a relief to realize the boys didn’t seem to understand, yet, how life changed last Thursday.

They laughed and played in the sunshine with no hint of worry. They were thrilled when Chandler the bunny was rescued, and the whole affair likely seems to be a bit of an adventure.

But life as they knew it no longer exists.

The enormity of this brought tears to Angie’s eyes, and to mine, many times as we talked about the past few days and what the future might look like. She isn’t sure she wants to live again near the

river that has taken so much from her, and when she closes her eyes she has nightmares of being back in the water.

The flood has created emotional wounds along with physical ones. On a TV screen you don’t see and feel the fear and uncertainty of a person who has lost everything.

It will be at least midweek before anyone gets a glimpse of what has become of their homes in High River. I can’t imagine what that will be like, and my heart aches not only for my friend, but for thousands of people going through this with her.

As Angie kept her promise to go back to the woman stranded in the water, I will keep mine to help her with anything and everything I can. She is a tough cookie and she will get through this.

Today, she is my hero.

But even heroes need assistance. Rebuilding will be physically and emotionally exhausting and expensive. Financial stress is enormous because no one has insurance for this disaster.

We all have an opportunity to make a difference, and it’s impressive how quickly people in our communities are offering help to those in need.

If you know someone who has been affected, you may choose, as I have, to direct your contributions to a specific family.

If you aren’t connected with anyone in the disaster area, and would like to assist Angie and her three sons, we will gratefully accept donations on their behalf.

We’ll see the negative effects of June 20 for a long time to come. Right now we have an opportunity to share whatever we have to give – clothing, food, our skills, moral support, financial assistance and love – and to be the positive force that is created when friends, strangers and communities pull together as one.

When I tried to express my feeling of guilt for having so much while so many now have nothing, my friend, who has lost her home, her business and her community, replied, “Don’t feel guilty, feel blessed.”

Tea party raises awareness for rare disease

By Shannon Robin Tea parties and dress-up are favourite things of little girls and even little boys.

Jenny Vandersteen of Mill Canyon Photography used this idea to create a special day for Ellie Weisshaar of Pincher Creek, and to raise awareness and funds for the rare disease she lives with.

Jenny offered a photo shoot in a tea party setting with all the extras. There were costumes provided by Twinklebum Fairy, fresh flowers from C&D Floral, and vintage cupcakes by Crumbs Cakery. A hairstylist provided fancy looks for the little girls, complete with hairpieces by Add Love.

Thanks to contributions from these businesses, Jenny’s idea came to life in a big way.

Little girls and boys in fancy outfits ran in the field and sat down to tea and cupcakes, surrounded by lace and vintage items.

The result is an album of spectacular photos – you can see what a thrill it was for the children in their smiles and laughter.

In all, 12 children took part in the fun over two days. Jenny donated 20 per cent of the session fees, which totalled $452, to Idic15 Canada, and Ellie received her photo session at no cost.

“I do a lot of mini-sessions, and wondered how I could get more out of it than just a photo shoot,” Jenny says.

“Now that I’m a mom, I am super emotional when it comes to kids. I just look at how lucky I am, and my kids, and feel so much empathy for those parents, families and kids that have much more to worry about than I do.”

The event was conceived from Jenny’s desire to do something that would be meaningful and special. “To make a little girl feel special and beautiful, and to create a lasting memory for her family was my goal, while creating awareness, understanding and support within the community at the same time,” she says.

Jenny and her daughter Leena met Ellie and her mom, Lachlan Rempel, through a Parent Link moms group. “Ellie is always smiling and happy despite her challenges, and I thought this would benefit her,” Jenny says.

a duplication of genetic material results in a wide variety of physical symptoms and developmental delays.

“As a baby, Ellie seemed too good to be true,” her mom says. “She slept through the night and never cried.”

Lachlan and her partner, Kirk Weisshaar, soon found that this isn’t always a positive thing.

Ellie wasn’t able to breastfeed and struggled with choking. While looking into these concerns with a pediatrician in Lethbridge, hydrocephalus (water on the brain) was discovered.

Ellie’s parents began to notice other developmental delays – she couldn’t roll over or do tummy time.

By the age of six months, Ellie was having seizures. It took a three-month stay in the Calgary children’s hospital to find the right match of medications to keep the seizures under control.

Lachlan says her daughter is “just the happiest baby and very independent. She’s more high functioning, but she doesn’t like to make eye contact or to have her hands or feet touched.”

When Jenny approached Lachlan with the tea party plan, she thought it was a great idea.

“There’s a lot of misconceptions with any rare syndrome or disease,” she says. “People will look at Ellie and say she’s always sleeping – what they don’t realize is that everything she does takes double the effort.”

Ellie attends Children’s World Daycare in Pincher Creek, and Lachlan says it’s been an eyeopener for staff. She thinks Ellie is likely the first child with severe developmental delays to attend the daycare full time, and that staff have been “really good and really patient with her – there’s a great team of therapists working with Ellie.”

“This whole community has been very supportive to Kirk, Ellie and I – you almost want to cry,” she says.

Jeny Akitt organized a golf tournament for the family’s benefit last year, and Angels Within Us has also provided financial assistance to help with Ellie’s medical costs. Emotional and personal support is just as important as the dollars are.

“I’m so grateful that Jenny did this for us. She made Ellie look like a porcelain doll and the pictures are just beautiful,” Lachlan says. “The cost of a professional photo shoot isn’t in the budget when you have more monthly expenses than you would with the average child.”

Jenny hopes to start a tradition with similar photo sessions offered for other children with rare disorders or diseases. She plans to hold a second fundraiser in September.

Local paddlers bound for Slovakia

By Brad Quarin Three local young people will be representing Canada in an international kayaking competition in Slovakia.

Veronica Oczkowski of Beaver Mines and Ryley Penner of Lundbreck made the junior national team for athletes under 18 in the world slalom championships. Adrian Cole, a Blairmore native now based in Calgary, is on the under 23 national team.

It’s a “pretty incredible feeling” to realize a goal he’d been training hard for all winter, Adrian says, and he describes himself as “ecstatic.”

Ryley and Veronica, who are leaving on Saturday, both say they’re feeling good about it.

Qualifying for the national team is no small achievement. Only 20 people from across Canada are on the junior national team, Veronica believes.

“I narrowly missed out on my place last year, but this year I came in first for the selection,” she says, referring to the national junior women’s category.

She has never been to Europe before.

Ryley says that having two people from the Pincher Creek area going “means a lot.”

The under 23 team has only nine members nationwide, Adrian says, and only two Albertans.

“It’s a nice feeling.”

Adrian has been on the U23 team once before, and was on the junior national team in 2010.

Boating competitions have taken him to France, Spain, Australia and Mexico, and he’s excited to add Slovakia to that list when he leaves next

Ryley has also been in the world championships before, going to Wisconsin last year and placing 30th. He had also gone kayaking in Nepal for two months.

This year, it took serious training to make the cut. Training for Adrian has involved racing kayaks, lifting weights, running and cross-country skiing.

Lately, Veronica and Ryley have been training with Samuel Wey from France. The training happens five or six days a week, Veronica says, mostly on water as well as in the gym.

Training also requires preparing oneself mentally, Ryley adds, and he’s developed specific goals to meet. He wants to be in “top shape” and his training has become increasingly challenging in the last two or three years. Much of it has been on Oldman River and Kananaskis River.

In May, Veronica and Ryley took part in a national competition in Ontario, where they qualified for the junior national team. Matthew Halton High School, where Veronica is in Grade 12, actually delayed its grad ceremonies so she could take part.

They’re all anticipating a challenge in Europe.

This being her first year in the world slalom championships, Veronica doesn’t expect to come first in her two days of racing, but she is planning to do her best. “It’ll be really tiring, but really exciting to race with all the guys and all the pro athletes,” she says.

Europe produces “a lot tougher competition,” Ryley says, and the competition is used to training in Europe. Likewise, Adrian expects to see “lots of really good kayakers” and “some of the best paddlers in the world.” Merely watching them as well as taking them on should be “spectacular,” he says.

But Ryley is up for the challenge, and wants to make it to the top 20 at the championships. For Adrian, it would be awesome to make the semifinals, which would also be held in Slovakia, but he’s not feeling pressured.

Veronica, Ryley and Adrian are all members of the Pinch o’ Crow Creekers kayak club, started

by Ryley’s stepdad, Chuck Lee. Ryley had been kayaking before he came to Lundbreck, starting out with the Sundre kayak club six years ago.

He got involved because he finds rivers “super interesting,” and he continues to love the speed, intensity and challenge of what he calls “a fairly unique sport.”

Adrian started kayaking at 11, and is now 20. Chuck got him racing, and Adrian says he “absolutely loved it.” He particularly likes the unpredictability of the sport, which he finds thrilling.

Veronica has been kayaking for five years, starting out with Chuck’s club in the Pincher Creek pool with her friends. She also likes the challenge. “Each river’s different,” she says. The competitive aspect is “all right, it’s not my favourite. It pushes me to do better, though.”

TMRC members back in the saddle

The Turtle Mountain Riding Club is back in the saddle, literally.

The club teaching gymkhana and horsemanship is meeting just under Turtle Mountain in Frank on Tuesday nights.

Secretary-treasurer Wendy Francis describes the club as bringing together people of all ages and both genders, mainly from Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek but also as far as Fort Macleod.

“Because life now has got so busy, volunteerism is really hard,” she says. “But our club seems to come through, and I think it’s just because there is that commitment to the horses, their families, their children, their grandchildren.”

She feels the club, which goes back decades, still gets great participation, with 60 members being typical and sometimes 70. “And our club is generations of people.”

Ages range from two to 84, with varying skill levels, from beginner to semi-professional.

“Actually, the two-year-olds are quite amazing,” Wendy says. Some kids are led on their horses, but others can ride alone. Safety is a concern, and riders under 18 have to wear helmets.

The gymkhana events are competitive, with points awarded that can build up to prizes at the end of the year, but sometimes points are given for simply attending.

Wendy defines gymkhana as athletic games requiring a level of horsemanship, including knowledge of how a horse moves and goes faster,

though speed isn’t emphasized in this club.

Horsemanship also means cruelty to the horses is forbidden.

Among the gymkhana events practised at Turtle Mountain is barrel racing, which calls for fast turns around three barrels, and pole bending, also requiring turns. The keyhole event involves rope and chalk, which frighten horses, and the lack of harm that comes to the animal teaches it to trust the rider.

Many of these activities need hand-leg coordination. “You should actually run your horse more with your feet, rather than with your hands,” Wendy says.

At the end of the year, prizes given out for points can be worth $100 and include horse equipment and blankets, rewarding the horse as well as the rider. Riders under 18 all get small prizes like brushes and pails.

Besides teaching equestrian skills, the club can develop kids’ confidence, Wendy says.

Outside such activities, the club is often in parades, sometimes with floats on Rum Runner Days and Canada Day. They also have barbecues.

The Turtle Mountain Riding Club is a nonprofit organization, and supporters have included the ag society and the RCMP, with money going toward the prizes. The auction during heritage days in August was a success last year and will be repeated this year at Flumerfelt Park.

“I think the heart of a horse is huge,” she says.

You still have to exercise some caution, though.

The club’s gymkhanas will run until September.

CCS protects the green guys

By Brad Quarin Because it’s not easy being green, the Crowsnest Conservation Society is participating in the amphibian survey for a third year. Volunteers will be out this summer documenting sightings of amphibians and their breeding sites in the Crowsnest Pass area, in an effort to protect the creatures.

The idea came from biologist Kris Kendall of Edmonton, who approached the conservation society about the project. “We jumped on it,” says CCS member Jim Rennie. “We said this is something we can do and have some real benefit to environmental studies and education.”

Amphibian populations aren’t doing so well, which is a problem because, as with any kind of animal, they’re part of nature’s balance, Jim says.

Amphibians are part of the food chain, with tadpoles being eaten by fish, larger frogs, or snakes later on.

“The loss of any species would be a horrible thing,” he says. “We’ve had enough of that happen.”

The plan is that by knowing where the breeding sites are, they can create a 400-metre radius around the sites where logging, camping and road construction would be prohibited. “They need more than just the pond to survive,” Jim says.

The amphibian survey appealed to him as “worthwhile, and there’s a fun aspect to it.” Much of that fun is just working with maps, compasses and GPS. “As kids, we caught frogs and tadpoles all the time,” Jim recalls, laughing.

These days, he finds bringing the Boys and Girls Club to the ponds is “a real hoot.”

In August of the past two years, the volunteers have taken the Boys and Girls Club to the ponds to catch amphibians and learn about them. “That’s a fun day for everybody, not just the kids.”

This year, the project will start on July 3 with an orientation class. Kris will be teaching volunteers how to recognize amphibians and what to observe in the ponds. Afterwards, the volunteers will go to a nearby pond and practise surveying techniques.

You don’t need a background in biology to participate, and last year there were 14 volunteers, from inside and outside the CCS, Jim says.

The volunteers will visit 51 ponds in an area including Crowsnest Pass, Beaver Mines and West Castle.

Out in the ponds, they’ll find amphibians, put them in containers for photos and mark their locations. One of the creatures they’ll be looking out for is the boreal toad, “with a face that only a mother could love,” which has breeding sites ideal for any amphibian, Jim says. Breeding sites are indicated by the presence of tadpoles or nests of eggs.

Afterwards, participants in the survey will draw up a map of breeding sites and prepare a report at the end of the year.

In the two years the project has been running, they’ve had some interesting findings. One is that the boreal toads always have breeding sites near coniferous forests, something people suspected but didn’t know, Jim says.

Personally, Jim has a better appreciation of how dragonfly naiads eat tadpoles after seeing it for himself.

The amphibian survey should be carried out at least five years, because that’s the length of the boreal toad breeding cycle, Jim says. A pond with seemingly no toads could be swarming with them five years later. However, he imagines the project can run until there are no longer any volunteers.

By Brad Quarin Canada turns 146 this Monday, and Canucks nationwide, including here in southern Alberta, are preparing to celebrate.

A number of Canada Day activities are planned in Crowsnest Pass, starting with the Coleman Legion’s pancake breakfast at 8 a.m., free for everyone under six and $5 for everyone else.

The parade is at 11 a.m., with its theme being the anniversary of the Crowsnest Historical Society. The parade starts at Horace Allen School and ends at the Coleman Legion’s Cenotaph Park. There will be prizes.

After the parade, there will be a flag raising and speeches at the Coleman Legion, which will give awards to dedicated members, says secretary-treasurer Debby Greenwood. Everyone can enjoy cake and a barbecue at 1 p.m. Bill Hillman is performing country music at the beer garden at 3.

Meanwhile, Flumerfelt Park will be busy from noon to 4, with an Astro Jump bouncer, face painting, a concession and music, says Jane Ann Reimer of the Coleman Community Society. At 1 p.m., there will be cake.

Jane Ann also notes the Boys and Girls Club is having an open house at 2 p.m. at their new location on Main Street Coleman.

Admission to Crowsnest Pass Museum is free all day.

Admission’s also free at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village in Pincher Creek, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The museum will be the place for a flag raising, a bouncy tent, face painting, an obstacle course and music, says Denise Somerville. Among the goodies will be hotdogs, burgers and snow cones.

Meanwhile, Waterton Lakes National Park is planning a bike parade at 10:30 a.m., starting at the United Church. Decorated bicycles will be featured.

Afterwards, there’ll be a flag raising, singing of “O Canada,” and free cake and lemonade. The barbecue costs $3.

Throughout the day, admission to the park is free. “We invite everybody to come and enjoy the park,” says Christy Gustavison.

Cricket, Pincher Creek style

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek’s own brand of cricket – the sport, not the bug – is back this year. “It’s just a fun thing,” says organizer Frank Wood.

To Frank, cricket is a great game for a number of reasons. “It’s cheap to play,” he says, requiring little expensive equipment. He also describes it as “genteel” – injuries are rare – and adaptable in its rules.

That’s what’s happening here, as the Pincher Creek Cricket match is somewhat different than cricket matches elsewhere in the world. Team sizes are different, and the Lions ballpark, where it will take place, is smaller than your typical cricket field. As well, instead of playing until you’re “out,” the number of balls you can receive is limited, Frank says.

The match is open to men and women of all ages and skill levels. While cricket isn’t big in Canada, Frank estimates half of the participants are native to Canada, while the rest hail from various places including Australia, New Zealand and Britain. Last year, 35 people joined in on playing, which was “actually quite good,” Frank says. The match also brings in spectators, though not as much as in the past.

If you want to take part or watch the action, just drop by Lions Park this Sunday between 2 and 5 p.m.

Busy year for Crowsnest Scouts

By Vern Harrison First Crowsnest Scouts have had a very busy month, with a few activities yet to come. We will be taking the summer off, but have had a great first year, and will be building on our success when we reconvene in September.

First Crowsnest participated in the Ed Gregor Stewardship Day, supporting the Crowsnest Forest Stewardship Society. This event is the longest-running event of its type in Canada. Next year is its 20th anniversary, and we are looking forward to participating again.

This year First Crowsnest engaged in a bioengineering activity (riparian restoration) at McGillivray Creek. The Cubs and Beavers had a great time and are excited to see the growth of the willows later this fall. Our sincerest thanks to ESRD, Marina Irwin and Jeff Smith for arranging this event. All involved had a great time and look forward to participating again.

First Crowsnest Beavers had their first campout at Camp Impeesa, at Beaver Mines Lake.

Wildlife and bear safety was a highlight and the kids had a great time. A special thanks to the staff at Impeesa and Tracker, who are also very excited that scouting is back in the Crowsnest.

Our first-ever swim up ceremony was held June 12! Seven First Crowsnest Beavers swam up and officially became “Tenderpads” – new Cubs.

We are very proud of them and look forward to them continuing as Cubs in 2013-14. Here we grow!

successful first year for First Crowsnest, enjoyed food and watched a slideshow highlighting many of the great activities from our first year.

The Scout Trees event scheduled for June 22 was postponed due to flooding in the area.

It will run today from Camp Impeesa, at 5:30 p.m.

First Crowsnest will be participating with other southern Alberta scouting organizations in this national event that has been running since 1972. Scout Trees gives all members the opportunity to demonstrate, through action, their concern for the environment. By planting trees, youth learn about the important role trees have in our lives, the critical need for conservation, the huge impact of climate change and how we can do our part to create a better world.

First Crowsnest will be participating through the generous sponsorship of Teck. We appreciate their support and we are looking forward to this event as well as meeting other scouters from southern Alberta.

This Friday, First Crowsnest Cub Scouts will be canoeing the Oldman River, ending in Popson Park in Lethbridge. The new Tenderpads will also be participating.

First Crowsnest Scouts meets at the Compass Centre, downtown Crowsnest Pass, Beaver Scouts (aged five to seven) meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

By Brad Quarin Road hockey! It’s a Canadian tradition, because Canadians aren’t going to let a little thing like summer get in the way of their love of hockey. Kids of Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and area can look forward to the game on a large scale at the Community 4 on 4 Road Hockey Festival this Saturday.

“It’s about having fun, being on a team, and just getting together, with a bunch of kids and music,” says Jacqui Bruns, who’s volunteering in the festival.

This is the third annual tournament, and it takes place between the arena and the curling rink in Pincher Creek, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Any kids are welcome to play for a cost of $5, with the registration cut-off being Thursday. The kids will be split into divisions by age group, with the youngest being born in 2008 and the oldest in 1998, Jacqui says.

The game isn’t competitive. “At the end of the day, there’s no grand prize winner, there’s nothing like that,” she says.

Nevertheless, the organizers will be teaming up kids skilled at hockey with kids new to the sport, to make for a fairer game. The kids won’t know their teams until the day of the festival.

The $5 fee simply supports the event, since there will be treat bags for each player. Kids who participate should bring their own helmet, gloves, sticks and shin guards.

The tournament has proved popular, bringing in 80 or 90 kids, and it also attracts an audience of parents, passersby and kids, Jacqui says.

Kids who try the sport on Saturday and really enjoy it will have a chance to register with Pincher Creek Minor Hockey that day, she notes.

There’s also a hockey equipment swap at the same time, where people can drop off their old equipment and maybe get something new for free.

Registration and waiver forms are available at the Parent Link office on Main Street and Westwind Interiors in Pincher Creek.

A reel good day at the pond

By Brad Quarin Shuttle buses travelled all the way from Nord-Bridge Seniors Centre and Green Acres Foundation in Lethbridge to Pincher Creek, taking seniors on a pilgrimage for fishing.

A bus also came from a much closer place, Crestview Lodge, for the annual fish derby put on by the Pincher Creek Legion last Wednesday at Bobby Burns Park.

The verdict from the seniors who made the trip from Lethbridge was positive. Rag Arnold of Green Acres describes the experience as “far out.”

Clay Olsen of Nord-Bridge comes every year to enjoy the fishing, and came with his brother Butch and friends.

It didn’t take long for Rodney Foster, also from Nord-Bridge, to catch a fish.

The fish pond at the park is artificial, put in

by Co-op butcher Robert Burns and his wife, Janet, on what was their property. After they died, they left the pond to the community, recounts the Legion’s sergeant-at-arms, Fred White.

The Legion takes care of the fish pond now, with the help of grants and donations from users and their families. Fish and Wildlife donates 1,000 fish every year from the Allison Creek fish hatchery.

grad photos or lunch in the “picturesque” setting, Fred says. Four weddings are being held here this summer, and weddings at the park are free aside from a suggested donation.

Seniors don’t have to be members of the Legion to fish at Bobby Burns Park. The pond is also available to the handicapped so they don’t have to hike to a real creek to fish, Fred says.

Each person is limited to catching two fish per day, but that rule doesn’t apply at the derby, which has no limits. In fact, last year, residents of Crestview Lodge caught so many fish that the whole lodge could eat them, Fred says with a chuckle. The derby is free.

Fred, who co-ordinates park activities, sent out invitations to Legion branches and seniors groups all over southern Alberta, including Crowsnest Pass, Champion and Nanton. He feels the attendance last Wednesday was a good, in spite of threats of rain.

After the fishing ended, the visitors enjoyed lunch, and medals were given out for categories based on the size of the fish caught and the age of the anglers. There was even a medal for the smallest fish.

Much volunteer work goes into keeping Bobby Burns Park running. Volunteers clean it up in the spring, after which about six people come often to cut the grass and pick up garbage, Fred says. The Legion and MD also plan for reno-

Pincher Creek classmates reunite this weekend

By Brad Quarin Old friends will meet and mingle this weekend at Pincher Creek Community Hall, during a reunion for graduates of Pincher Creek High School, later renamed Matthew Halton High School.

The Pincher Creek schools reunion happens every five years, and this year the classes of 1963 to 1965 will join the classes of 1953 to 1962, says organizer Bette Jean (B.J.) Scott.

“You still have a bond with people you went to school with,” says B.J., who’s on the decorating committee and graduated from Matthew Halton High School in 1962. Even as time makes the high school years more distant, she says the bond only becomes more important with age.

Many of the expected guests are thrilled about the upcoming event.

This year, the reunion is “a little less struc-

tured,” she says. Last time there were trips to Heritage Acres and tea at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village, but this year the guests mainly want to catch up with each other. “People just want to visit.”

The 2013 reunion will kick off with wine and cheese on Friday night, followed by golfing on Saturday. “The hall will be open for people wanting to visit,” B.J. says.

On Saturday night, there will be a banquet and some entertainment. A continental breakfast will be served on Sunday morning, and goodbyes will be exchanged.

The banquet will consist of prime rib, prepared by Simply Catering. The show will include a memorial for graduates who have since passed on, and another graduate will be performing music. The theme for the reunion is “Moments to Remember,” a 1955 song that was popular in

its day.

Currently, 240 people are registered to come and there could still me more, B.J. says. The reunion is open not only to graduates but anyone who went to the high school, and alumni of St. Michael’s School have also been invited.

The process of finding graduates outside Pincher Creek started in the summer, as past Pincher Creek students were informed of the plan and asked about their interest. The invitations went out after Christmas with a date and price.

B.J.’s class previously had a reunion in 2002, and have been keeping a list with contact information for years. As well, many of the people who went to high school in Pincher Creek are still here. B.J. herself lived in Vancouver for 25 years and then went to Kamloops before retiring to Pincher Creek six years ago.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Lynn (Minnie) Jager, nee Court, of Bellevue, Alta. on June 16, 2013, at the Crowsnest Pass Health Care Centre, at the age of 51.

Minnie was born on Dec. 27, 1961 in Campbellton, N.B. to proud parents Bloyce and Phyllis Court. She grew into a lovely young lady who possessed a great appreciation for family and friends. Minnie captured the heart of Bert Jager, and the couple married on March 8, 1984.

Minnie enjoyed sewing, quilting, scrapbooking, crafting, camping, quading and learning about the history of the Crowsnest Pass. She found great peace and comfort tending her incredible aquarium, marvelling at the miniature ecosystem she created, but her true passion was her precious family. She was truly selfless and nurturing, wanting nothing more than for her children to have happy, fulfilled lives.

Minnie will be remembered for her kindness, warmth, joyous cackle and, most of all, her love.

She is survived by her loving husband, Bert Jager, of Bellevue, Alta.; her cherished children, Megan (Jeremy) Cartwright of Blairmore, Alta., Jennifer (Jonathan) Jager and Kristopher (Emelia) Jager, both of Lethbridge, Alta.; her grandson, Cash Cartwright; her father, Bloyce Court; and her sisters, Peggy (Ken) Court, Maureen (Ted) Zielke and Shelley (Shayne) Whitnack, all of Edson, Alta. She was predeceased by her mother, Phyllis Court, and her Grammy Elizabeth Price.

Her family celebrated her life with a memorial service on Saturday, June 22 at 1 p.m. at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel in Blairmore, Alta., with interment following at the Passburg Cemetery. Mr. Wilbur Apoll officiated.

2. Three: The New Yorkers, Everyday Hudson, and Hudson. Their first release under the “Brothers” name was “So You Are a Star” in 1974. They briefly had a TV variety show that same year.

3. Ringo Starr, in 1971. It’s thought that the lyrics were about the group’s breakup.

4. “Blue On Blue.” That was also the name of a Vinton album with all songs having “blue” themes.

5. “Heart of Glass,” by Blondie in 1979.

The first version of the song, in 1974-75, was titled “Once I Had a Love.” It went through various incarnations such as ballad and reggae until they settled on the disco beat.
