Chris Stone crosses the finish line at the Sinister 7 Ultra+ Marathon in Crowsnest Pass last weekend. Chris was joined by Al Rankel, Marty Robertson, Tom McGrath, Brian Yorke and Robert Renman as the Redline Overlords. They were the first team to finish the gruelling race.

Giving them a run for their money were Nadyia Fry and Jakub Sunbera, who came in a close second running as a duo.

Top solo runners were Sean Meissner and Abi Moore. Abi was top female last year as well, and set a new course record for women.

Organizer Brian Gallant says the race went exceptionally well. “We had literally hundreds of comments from racers saying it was the best run race they had attended. They loved the community and they can’t wait for the seventh annual Sinster 7 in 2014. That’s pretty impressive considering we didn’t know if the race would go ahead due to the flooding in the area.” For more photos and results see www.sinister7.com .

My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin It seems every time you read a newspaper, listen to the radio, watch television or browse the Internet there is a new catastrophe. There is widespread flooding in Canada, an oil tanker explosion, a plane crash and the list goes on.

I’m nervous every time I check the forecast – severe weather seems to be wreaking havoc everywhere.

Last Thursday afternoon a tornado warning was issued for High River. Our staff wondered how much more one battered community could possibly take, and we prayed the storm would pass without leaving damage in its wake.

Thankfully, that was the case for High River, but other areas were not so lucky.

On Friday we travelled through Taber on our way to Medicine Hat. I seldom pay attention to crops, simply because I don’t know much about farming. My husband likes to tease me about this, and engaged me in a game of Name That Crop.

I thought I did pretty well, picking out canola, corn and sugar beets along the highway. To me, the crops looked pretty good.

We stopped for supper in Taber at about 7:30, and didn’t notice any signs of ominous weather.

Shortly after setting up camp in Medicine Hat, lightning began flashing to the west of us. An hour later I thought I should check the weather online – what I saw blew me away.

Former Pincher Creek residents Kim and Bruce Buckingham had shared photos of the Taber storm that blew in around 10 p.m. Hail was piled about a foot deep after the 20-minute storm.

If you haven’t seen the pictures, you might be interested in taking a peek at the Pincher Creek Voice website.

After viewing the photos, I was a little stressed as the lightning and dark clouds moved closer to our campground.

In the end, the lightning flashed for more than five hours and rain poured down in buckets, but at least we were spared the hail.

The scene for the outdoor wedding we attended the following day wasn’t quite what the bride and groom anticipated, but the lovely new lake on the grounds made for some beautiful

pictures.

They continued to take the weather in stride as another thunderstorm boomed in during the reception. The canopies over our heads collapsed under the weight of the rain, drenching many of the bridal party and guests. After the initial shock and a few laughs, things carried on. Ryan and Bailey shared their first dance in a puddle of water without allowing it to dampen their spirits.

Tinkling of cutlery on wine glasses didn’t entice the bride and groom to share a kiss, but they were quick to their feet for a smooch each time someone contributed to the jar of donations for Medicine Hat flood victims.

Donations also determined which tables were treated first to their steak dinner – the highest bidders went first. It was a nice gesture of community compassion by Ryan, Bailey and their guests.

On our return trip Sunday it was sad to see the same crops around Taber beaten to the ground, and to realize that yet another community was going to suffer hardship this summer.

Right now it’s impossible to imagine a silver lining in the dark clouds that have brought devastation across our province and across the nation.

It’s said that we’re never given more than we can handle, and that’s also a hard cliche to swallow.

What is clearly evident, though, is the resilience of the human spirit. People are mourning their losses, then putting on their gumboots to clean up and rebuild. The strength of character we’re seeing is truly inspirational.

The power of positive action is truly making a difference for many. First-time and veteran volunteers are out working night and day to help strangers, neighbours, family and friends. This is awesome, and will not be forgotten.

It’s wonderful to see so many from our community making a difference. The disasters are now more than an image on television that makes one say “That’s terrible.” This is very real.

The reality is harsh. It’s sad, frightening and disheartening, yet at the same time the compassion and caring we hear about every day is truly amazing. Let this keep us strong when the dark clouds gather overhead.

Long service brings big rewards

By Brad Quarin When devastating floods hit our province in June, Cpl. Kevin McKenna of Crowsnest Pass RCMP was quite busy. He had sent and taken out helicopters to the backcountry to pick up stranded campers, while sending some support staff to High River.

Service has been typical for Kevin in his years as a Mountie, cadet leader and Legion member, making the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal a natural fit for him.

“It’s kind of humbling in some ways,” he says. “It’s basically for service to the citizens of Crowsnest Pass and citizens of Canada.”

He received the medal in Edmonton in December from the lieutenant-governor, one of 300 Mounties to be so honoured that day.

It’s actually one of a number of medals on his traditional Mountie uniform, six by my count.

These include the Alberta Centennial Medal and the long-service award he received in November, also from the lieutenant-governor, marking two decades with the RCMP. But Kevin’s been policing for longer than that.

Originally from Fort Macleod, he joined Taber’s municipal police in 1977.

In 1991, he joined the RCMP, which he calls “a childhood dream.” The RCMP offered more career opportunities, and joining also meant he’d be serving in different communities. After training in Regina, he was stationed in The Pas, Man. Obviously, he’s enjoyed the job enough to stick with it for 20 years. “It’s challenging, it’s never the same,” he says. “Every day is a different day.”

Kevin returned to Alberta after being transferred to St. Paul in 1999, and arrived in the Pass in 2010. For six months, he also served Pincher Creek. All of these places have had their own challenges, he says.

“I enjoy being here,” he says. “People are good to deal with, and who could beat the scenery?”

There’s been plenty of variety in his career over the years, including search and rescue from the air, diving to look for evidence underwater and border work in plain clothes.

Some stories stick out. His nomination for the Diamond Jubilee Medal specifically mentions the

time in 1995 he helped save the life of a girl who fell into a river.

It was a May night when the girl, who was 13, went into the Saskatchewan River, Kevin recalls.

It was a close call, but with boats and ropes, they got her out. She said the moment changed her life. For their response to the incident, he and two other Mounties received the Commissioner’s Commendation.

For Kevin, another prominent memory was finding a boy while with aviation search and rescue in Manitoba in 1996.

After a canoe capsized, the boy’s dad and uncle drowned. The boy, who was 11, was stranded on an island for a week, living off berries and taking shelter in a cave. He was “hungry, cold and lonely” and quite excited to be rescued, Kevin recalls.

In Crowsnest Pass, Kevin worked under Sgt. Keith Bott, who was also his nominator for the Diamond Jubilee Medal. “He’s got a good head

on his shoulders,” Keith says, adding an officer of Kevin’s quality is “hard to find.”

Kevin has distinguished himself as more than a Mountie. “The other thing that I’m particularly proud of is the fact that I was involved in the Canadian military,” he says, specifically the Cadet Instructors Cadre.

That is, in fact, the first reason Keith mentions for nominating Kevin. “It’s so good for the kids,” Keith says, remarking that Kevin has contributed many hours and has driven to Fort Macleod to lead cadets.

A former cadet himself, Kevin values the program for teaching kids citizenship, leadership and fitness. He’s been training cadets since 1974, when he was 19, in Fort Macleod, according to his nomination, and has recruited troubled kids to help prevent crime.

Activities he’s overseen include camping and sending kids to Juno Beach in Normandy. He also helped build a cadet hall for Taber.

Fundraisers have been a necessity for the cadets, and Kevin says he’s done bottle drives, garage sales and highway cleanups.

When he was stationed in St. Paul, he discovered the rural Mallaig area had no cadets, and founded a corps there which is still going. After making presentations to schools, Legions and the Canadian Forces, he got a place, money and adult leaders for Mallaig cadets.

“He has helped mold our youth into tomorrow’s leaders,” Kevin’s nomination reads. “He has been instrumental in changing the community and young lives for the better.”

For 32 years, he has also been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He has served as a housing officer, finding places for veterans to live should the need arise. He remains a member of the Fort Macleod Legion.

As Keith notes, Kevin’s participation in things like Canada Day parades and Remembrance Day services aren’t part of his job, but rather volunteer work. Kevin was Keith’s only nominee for the Diamond Jubilee Medal.

It’s hard to say how long Kevin will remain stationed in Crowsnest Pass, but we can hope he sticks around.

Local boys ride high in New Mexico

By Brad Quarin Imagine two young residents of the MD of Pincher Creek taking their ingrained rodeo skills to the world stage.

That’s what happened when K’s Thomson of Lundbreck and Jack Mitchell of Twin Butte travelled to New Mexico for the national junior high finals in June.

“I was really excited, it was a lot of fun,” Jack says.

Despite the “national” in the title, the finals in Gallup, N.M. featured contestants from Canada, the United States and Australia. That’s how K’s placed second in the world for bull riding, though it wasn’t easy after a bull in New Mexico stepped on him and dislocated his shoulder.

K’s’ triumph was part of Team Alberta’s “phenomenal” performance at the competition, Jack says. Jack himself ranked first in Alberta for chute dogging, a kind of steer wrestling.

The two boys say they were basically born into the rodeo world, as they both live on ranches.

“My whole family is in rodeo,” says K’s, who’s in Grade 8 at Livingstone School. He started bull riding at age seven.

A student going into Grade 9 at Matthew Halton High School, Jack says there are a lot of horses at his ranch and rodeo was a natural step.

He began chute dogging in Grade 7.

Needless to say, they both enjoy their sports.

“It’s a rush, it’s independent,” K’s says. He likes that he can tackle the rodeo activities alone.

Jack has brothers, and that’s part of why he likes chute dogging. “It’s almost like wrestling,” he says, and wrestling a steer is like wrestling a brother. “It’s exhilarating and exciting.”

They both qualified for the Gallup competition at the provincial finals in Nanton. K’s says he’s been to so many rodeos since he was seven that he doesn’t remember where they all were, though he has been to Pincher Creek and Kananaskis. He’s been to Nanton three times and

to him, the last time was a usual thing.

Nevertheless, he stood out there, placing first in bull riding and second in team roping, where horse riders rope a steer. He also placed fourth in goat tying and breakaway roping. So he qualified to compete in those four events at Gallup.

Meanwhile, Jack had collected enough points at various rodeos, including Nanton, to make the cut for chute dogging in Gallup.

Actually getting to Gallup was expensive, and Jack thanks his sponsors, including Soderglen Ranches, for paying his way.

Once the boys got to New Mexico, they found it a different place. K’s calls it “a lot hotter.” Jack agrees, and also says the state has many deserts and rocks coloured like bricks.

The “climate was different but the rodeo was the same,” K’s says.

Of course, that dislocated shoulder made things harder for him. Roping with his other hand was “a lot more difficult,” and riding a bull was a challenge. While finishing second in bull riding, he placed 16th in team roping and second in the first round of breakaway roping.

His partner in team roping was Koby Ziemmer of northern Alberta.

Jack had difficulty with a steer the first time around, but did better on his second try. He didn’t make the final round, but had fun. He also had “lots of fun times” outside the competition, swimming in the pool and seeing Albuquerque.

There’s life after Gallup. Jack’s too old for junior rodeos now, and will likely go on to steer wrestling and saddle bronc in local rodeos starting this September. He’s already practising with neighbour Blaine Marr and coach Steve Rutledge.

“They’ve taught me pretty much everything I know,” Jack says. “We’re a pretty tight-knit group.”

Meanwhile, K’s doesn’t have any career aspirations besides rodeo.

By Brad Quarin Girl Guides is more than just the girls, you know. Recently, the organization recognized the work of the guiders, including four Pincher Creek women.

Sue Leong-Neumann received the Gold Unit Guider award, while Bev Burton, Tracy Burton and Dorothy Boras received centennial medals.

“It’s recognition of how many years of service I put in,” Sue says. She’s been with the organization for 11 years.

Her nominators were Bev and Tracy, who wrote letters outlining Sue’s service and expressing “appreciation of the support they get.”

“She brings a quiet enthusiasm to the meetings, the girls,” Bev says. “She’s very confident and skilled with the girls, and she’s always trying to help them learn, so instead of pushing it on them, she just guides them through.”

In addition to leading a guide unit, Sue is district commissioner for the Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass area.

Sue recalls her reasons for getting involved in the organization, mainly because of her daughter Shianne, who was a member. Shianne’s leaders had quit, so Sue stepped in. “If I didn’t, then we may not have Sparks for the girls.”

For 11 years, she stuck with it because she liked working with the girls, as well as other women who liked the same things. She’s made friends with guiders in Cardston, Taber and the

The Gold Unit Guider award recognizes more than just length of service. It also acknowledges guiders for offering interesting programs to the guides.

One thing Sue has had the guides do is geocaching, using GPS to find a hidden “treasure.”

She’s also had EMS personnel and recent immigrants come in to meet the girls.

There is also some interaction between the guides of different levels. In May, girls ranging from Sparks to Rangers came together for a rally in Lethbridge marking the 100th anniversary of Girl Guides in Alberta.

As well, recipients of the Gold Unit Guider award are honoured for welcoming new members to the organization. They’ve recently found guiders to start a new unit in Crowsnest Pass in September, and Sue has told kids about the program while working as a substitute teacher.

The time commitment needed for this work can be substantial, but Sue doesn’t think it’s much more than most volunteer work.

Sue also acknowledges the recipients of the centennial medals. “Bev and Tracy do a lot,” she says.

Tracy and Bev are twins who are both Pincher Creek doctors as well as guiders. They received their medals, given out on the 100th anniversary of Girl Guides coming to Alberta, for service to

Rain, rain, go away …

Well, if you have not heard of the flooding that has affected Calgary and surrounding areas in southern Alberta, you must live under a rock in the desert.

We’re all used to hearing reports of bad news from all over the world. But it is estimated that for every mean-spirited act people perpetuate on one another there are at least 10 acts of kindness that we never hear about.

I have an older friend who talked about the Depression and the Dirty ’30s, not focusing on the hunger or lack of wealth of the time, but on the kindness neighbours showed one another in sharing what they had.

I don’t think I am the only one to have noticed the almost palpable feeling of kindness that has embraced our province. However, it should not take a disaster to give people a reason to help one another. I can describe only one positive outcome of the flooding and it is that people have rediscovered the good feeling you get from giving of yourself.

I hope you realize that you do not have to wait for a disaster to be kind to one another each and every day. Kindness can be as simple as holding a door open, saying a kind word or smiling at a passerby.

We all want to pass a great gift on to our children, and I can think of none greater than passing this philosophy on to the next generation!

“You never do this because you expect an award at the end, so it’s always kind of a nice surprise when somebody recognizes you for that,” Tracy says.

The sisters both lead Sparks and Brownies. Bev is on the area council for southern Alberta and is an international advisor, helping raise funds for Canadian World Friendship Fund. Tracy is a program advisor on the provincial level, helping secure resources for programs in Alberta, the Northwest Territories and the Yukon. Bev and Tracy are also the district’s treasurers.

They’ve both been involved in the Girl Guides for 26 years, since they were kids. Their mom was pretty active in the organization and the twins became Brownies.

“We both just loved the program, the opportunities it gave us for growth, leadership, travel, so we stayed with it,” Bev says. Eventually they graduated from guides to guiders.

The work is rewarding. “You get to help girls reach their potential,” says Bev. Tracy says they work with girls so young they have trouble using scissors, and see them grow into leaders.

They’re also introducing more science into the Girl Guides, Bev says, and they had “great success” with science experiments.

One experiment the girls did that stands out was making “rain” and “storms” with water, shaving cream and food colouring. “The kids really liked that,” Bev remarks.

A centennial medal also went to Pincher Creek native Dorothy Boras, who’s also an honorary life member. Currently retired in Lethbridge, Dorothy used to teach at Canyon School.

Dorothy has also been involved with the Girl Guides since she was a girl, Sue says. That’s about 48 years. She led the Pathfinders and Rangers until her retirement, and then focused on her role as area commissioner in Lethbridge.

“We really miss her,” says Sue. “She really is guiding.”

The Breeze Mailbox Road to a healthy community For the love of Crowsnest Pass and its people, I am again compelled to contribute some thought to the situation we face, with the hope that some positive thinking and bridge building can be accomplished.

Shaping a preferred future rather than analyzing a bad past is easier said than done. There is a natural tendency in us all to analyze decisions and processes to death. We all know it is good to assess and learn from our mistakes. However, if this is done in excess (over too long a period or with too much backward focus), the loss tomorrow is that we are not focusing our energy on the future.

This loss is called the opportunity cost, which in simple terms can be defined as: “The cost of an alternative that must be forgone in order to pursue a certain action. Put another way, the benefits you could have received by taking an alternative action.”

To explain opportunity cost further, perhaps I could use the analogy of making sure a growing child drinks milk. Milk (calcium) is needed for development of healthy bones. If a child constantly drinks water or pop or orange juice, the opportunity cost is that they are not drinking milk, therefore missing the calcium to grow bone. So is water, pop or orange juice bad? In moderation none of them will kill you, but the opportunity to grow healthy bones is lost.

Maintaining a forward focus rather than analyzing the past is the challenge our community faces. If a community constantly analyzes its past it is not moving forward (opportunity cost), and the thing about analysis and scrutinizing is that it tends to create a stifling atmosphere where forward thinkers are hesitant to bring forward ideas that could lead to a preferred future. They are hesitant because they will always feel, before making a contribution, that it will be analyzed to death.

How does a community think? At some point the entire community has to turn to positive directions of thought and focus. Change your thinking and you will change processes and the future. I hate to dwell on this matter of forgiveness, but feel that a few additional thoughts would be helpful. Forgiveness is not forgetting, excusing or smoothing over, tolerating or pretending a mistake was not made. One aspect of forgiveness involves separating the mistake from the person and being able to continue in relationship building with that person or team or organization.

The alternative to forgiveness is revenge, where attacking, gossip and betrayal thrive. Let’s choose forgiveness and do something radical that has not been done before – a community healing – part of the puzzle of shaping a preferred future for Crowsnest Pass. Hmm … what a novel idea.

Shell makes big investment in ag society

By Brad Quarin What would you do with $10,000?

That’s the question that came to the Pincher Creek and District Agricultural Society during its Cowboy Gathering in June, when Shell Canada made the substantial donation to the organization.

The answer is that the money will go pretty much everywhere. It’ll be divided between the Cowboy Gathering, the Pincher Creek Pro Rodeo, the high school rodeo, the Cowboy Show and upgrades to the Horseshoe Pavilion, says ag society president Janet Watmough.

Sandy Patterson, who handled sponsorship for the pro rodeo, had suggested pursuing a donation from Shell. Once the ag society made its application, Rod Sinclair, community affairs co-ordinator at Shell’s Waterton Gas Complex, had no problem recommending it to the Calgary office.

Rod, who was rodeo committee chairman from 1980 to 1999, knows the ag society has been important to the community. Ag society events benefit many local people, attracting tourists who put money into restaurants, hotels and other businesses. Other Shell employees have been involved

in the ag society as well, he says, and Shell and the ag society have long been partners.

“I think it’s a very worthy donation,” he says.

The money came from Shell’s social investment budget.

As Janet explains, the pro rodeo and the Cowboy Gathering are directly held by the ag society. The society also gave money to the Cowboy Show and the high school rodeo, which it hosts.

Once part of the Cowboy Gathering, the Cowboy Show is a ranch-work competition that got so large, it branched off.

Aside from Shell’s largesse, the ag society has also benefitted from a $1,000 donation from the UFA convenience store and gas bar, Janet says.

As well, the recent chuckwagon cookout was a success.

Still, the society could use more help and will be applying for more grants, she says. The pro rodeo costs $80,000 to run, given the cost of animals, insurance and entertainment.

Planning for the rodeo is going well, Janet notes. There will be new things this year, including trick riders and sheep riding.

Still room for sole survivors

By Brad Quarin For some people of Crowsnest Pass, Rum Runner Days means running.

The Sole Survivor Foot Race is coming to the Pass for a 13th year, so families can walk or run together on July 19 at 7:30 p.m.

“It’s a family fitness run,” says Sasha Harriott of the Sole Survivor Foot Race Society. She leads the committee holding the event, which she says receives a lot of support from the community.

While some people treat the event as a competitive race and monitor their times, that’s not the real purpose of the run. “We’re focused more on the fun,” Sasha says.

This year will bring some new things, one being the venue, as the participants will start at the Albert Stella Memorial Arena in Blairmore. In addition to the regular routes of two, five and 10 kilometres, there will be a new 16K route, which takes advantage of a new trail between Blairmore and Coleman. Many of the kids will be walking the 2K route.

Around 150 people are already registered for the foot race, including numerous families.

One is the Mertz family, who are participating for a third or fourth time, says mom Katherine Mertz. She and her daughter Alexandra will be running the 5K race while her husband, Mike, and son Silas will be tackling the 10K route.

“It just seemed like a fun local race,” says Katherine on why they first got involved. As well, it was a way to introduce their kids to the sport.

Last time, Silas was six and was thrilled about finishing the 5K race. He’s ready for an extra challenge and isn’t expecting any difficulty, Katherine

says.

For those who run or walk, there is a chance to win prizes, Sasha notes. These are given to the male and female first-place winners in the routes, the top two overall, and people in various age categories.

There will also be draws for “quite a diverse bunch of prizes,” provided by the sponsors, Sasha says. They include sunglasses, shirts, oil changes from Impact Auto and ice cream from The Old Dairy Ice Cream Shoppe in Bellevue.

Each participant will get a race package, which includes a T-shirt and a meal ticket, and something extra in the kids’ packages. Sasha won’t say what it is, just that it’s exciting.

Aside from the sponsors, the event is made possible by volunteers, including many regulars.

The Sole Survivor Foot Race was started 13 years ago by Lori Groat. Sasha and her husband, Craig, have been organizing it for about four years. June Vastenhout is co-ordinating the volunteers and Paul Pichurski is managing the course. Together, they’re doing what Lori used to do alone, Sasha says.

In the past, the foot race has attracted over 300 people, though the limit this year is 200 to make it more manageable.

Last year was “a tremendous rain event,” complete with hail, Sasha recalls. Keep that in mind when deciding what to bring to the event. People should bring lawn chairs.

Memories and golfing in the Pass this weekend

By Brad Quarin It’s going to be busy at the Crowsnest Pass golf course. The Kathy Allsop Memorial Golf Tournament, which was postponed until this Friday, will be followed the next day by the Bill Fukami Memorial Golf Tournament.

The latter event is also a fundraiser, supporting Crowsnest Consolidated High School athletics.

“We’re really hoping the public’s going to support us and the school program, and honour Bill and what he stood for,” says organizer Ritch Braun.

The event, now in its ninth year, was originally started by Bill himself as the Green and Gold tournament.

Bill taught math at the high school, and was also “an integral part of the athletic program,” says Ritch, a retired phys-ed teacher. “He spent countless hours coaching every kind of team you can imagine.”

“He was a sports fanatic at heart.”

Bill was also a longtime member of the golf course.

His inaugural golf tournament was held in the summer of 2005, and Bill passed away the following September. He intended the tournament to be an annual event and it has been continued ever since, now bearing his name.

In previous years, Ritch just golfed in the tournament, which used to be organized by Kyle Draper. After Kyle moved, Ritch played a small part in planning last year’s tournament, along with Dave Skinner, who has also moved. Now, Ritch is organizing the event with secretary Bonnie Kress, who’s been involved since the start.

One of his duties is getting prizes, usually golf-related merchandise.

Prizes are given out to the first- and second-place winners, and also acknowledge things like the longest drive and putt.

Bonnie also collects donations of merchandise for door prizes and draws, Ritch says.

Mountain Radio is giving two four-day passes to the Big Valley Jamboree in Camrose and camping passes, Bonnie says. Prizes for holes-in-one include $20,000 from Top Pizza in Lethbridge, $10,000 from Crowsnest Insurance Agency and $10,000 towards a vehicle from Bridge City Chrysler in Fort Macleod.

In the past, the tournament has been successful, and a big reason was the patronage of local NHL player Rick Rypien, Ritch says. “He was a great ambassador.”

Before Rick died in 2011, he golfed in the tournament and donated a lot of prizes. One year, he offered a package to be auctioned off covering the expenses of plane tickets, hockey tickets and hotel rooms for people to see a game in Vancouver.

Last year’s tournament didn’t do quite as well, and this year they’re aiming for 90 or more golfers. That may be helped by the tournament being moved to a Saturday for the first time, whereas in the past it was held on Thursdays.

Bonnie says they’ll likely take entries until the day of the event, but advance registration would be appreciated.

Tom Craven 1929 - 2013

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Tom Craven, formerly of Bellevue, Alta. Tom was called to be with the Lord on June 28, 2013 while receiving care and kindness at the Vista Village Care Centre in Pincher Creek. He was 83 years of age.

Tom Firth Craven was born on Dec. 22, 1929 in Lethbridge, Alta., to Tom Wilfred and Edna Gladys Craven. Tom was raised with a great appreciation for family, community, faith and any task well done. He was a handsome and dashing young man who made a tremendous impression on a lovely young lady, Mary Mokosak, and won her affection. They pledged their love in holy matrimony on Aug. 15, 1953 and were further blessed with four children of their own.

Tom enjoyed many things in his life, including his coin collection, seeking hidden treasures with his metal detector, watching John Wayne and Perry Mason shows, camping and fly fishing. He was talented in many ways, including playing the harmonica, fixing and tinkering with automobiles, keeping an immaculate and beautiful garden – but most importantly providing a wonderful and nurturing home for his family.

Tom was devoted to Mary and they enjoyed many years together travelling the roads, raising a family and caring for one another unconditionally. Their dedication to this community and the church was exemplary; Tom held several positions in the Knights of Columbus and obtained his life membership and fourth-degree status, and cherished his membership with the Good Sams Club. May he find salvation in the peace of Christ and may his memory continue to bless us with friendship and love.

Those left to mourn his passing and celebrate his life include his loving children, Tom Craven Jr. of Grande Cache, Laura (Steve) Fowler of Sylvan Lake, Alan Craven of Vancouver and Sheila (Mark Kondro) Craven of Rimbey; his grandchildren, Amanda (Marc) Labontè, Tommy Craven, Kalen Fowler, Eric Fowler, Carly Russell and Emily Russell; his great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Rosalie and Sofie Labontè; his sister, Elaine (Reg) Scotney; his sister-in-law, Margaret (Dick) Trentham; his numerous nieces and nephews and his extended family; as well as the many friends that he made throughout his lifetime.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Mary Craven; his father, Tom Craven Sr.; his mother, Edna Craven; his brothers, Bob (Rita) Jarvis and Jack (Marie) Jarvis; and his cherished canine companion, Buddy.

The prayer service honouring Tom’s life was held on July 5 at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Blairmore, Alta.

The funeral mass was held on July 6 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, with Very Rev. Jack Pereira, VG, as celebrant. The Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus acted as the honour guard, along with the St. Joseph the Worker Council of Crowsnest Pass.

Pallbearers were Thomas Craven, Tommy Craven, Kalen Fowler, Eric Fowler, Steve Fowler and Mark Kondro, with Alan Craven as honorary pallbearer.

Cremation followed at the private crematorium of Fantin’s Funeral Chapel, with interment in the Bellevue Catholic Cemetery.

Busy battling the blue weed

By Brad Quarin Echium vulgare, better known as blue weed, is described by Sahra Hancock of Pincher Creek as “bluish purple” and “unfortunately, quite pretty.”

It’s unfortunate because blue weed is considered an invasive plant that’s “incredibly prolific” and “spreads pretty quickly.”

“It’s unpalatable to any range animal, so it can change your productive range into being unproductive,” Sahra says.

That’s where the Pincher Creek Watershed Group, of which she is a member, comes in. The group is an alliance of landowners along the Pincher Creek, and others in the community of the same name, aiming to improve the creek’s state.

In winter, the group hosts the Dead Weed Dinner, where landowners’ stories are told and pictures are displayed, educating people on invasive species. As well, the group works with Trout

Unlimited on the Yellow Fish Road program, which teaches kids about storm sewers and where the water goes.

But the group’s main event is the Blue Weed Blitz, a big weed pull which is going into its 11th year. On Saturday, starting at 10 a.m., participants will go from the headwaters to Oldman River, covering areas where landowners gives permission to enter.

The basic idea is for people to come together and not only help with the weed pull but also have fun, Sahra says. They’ll be swapping stories, maybe about changes in the creek’s course, and enjoying music and a barbecue.

Part of the entertainment is the awards given out at the barbecue. These include the Bent Back Award, a tree stump given to a particularly hardworking weed puller. Hard work is often noticed and bags of weeds collected are counted, Sahra says.

The Biggest Wreck Award is an actual truck fender given to a person who has an accident like falling into the creek. Since the weed pull is held in July, falling into a creek isn’t so bad.

“We’re pretty proud of the fact that we’ve been doing it for over a decade,” Sahra says. The blitz is a successful event, often bringing in 80 or 90 people, with the barbecue probably being a big reason.

Sahra recommends bringing water, good shoes, a lawn chair, lunch, sunscreen and bug spray. Participants will be provided with shovels, bags, gloves, help with planning rides, coffee and supper. The barbecue is “a significant amount of food,” consisting of beef, salads, baked beans and dessert.

“We welcome any new individuals to come and spend the day picking weeds with us,” Sahra says. It makes for a healthier creek.

A flood of goodwill

A flood of destruction was followed by a flood of goodwill last Wednesday.

YPM Chartered Accountants and the Swiss Pub & Grill in Pincher Creek both served food to raise cash supporting victims of the floods.

Kevin Burke of YPM was among the eight staff who worked at their barbecue, and he calls the experience “awesome.” Over 200 people came, enjoying burgers and hotdogs and donating money. The barbecue raised $1,463.

Meanwhile, the Swiss Pub & Grill sold beef on a bun and hotdogs and collected donations for High River flood relief.

About 250 people came and around $6,000 was raised, including food and clothing donations.

Gearing up to show and shine

By Joni MacFarlane Bikes, hotrods, muscle cars and other classic automobiles and trucks will be on view Saturday, July 20 at the ninth annual Crowsnest Pass Show and Shine.

Whether you’re a car enthusiast or not, you’ll want to take in the action as owners of street rods, antiques, classics and other vintage machines pay homage to the creation of the internal combustion engine.

Trucks, motorcycles and unique or special interest vehicles are also welcome.

The show is a great opportunity to display your wheels, and organizers expect about 100 vehicles to be entered. Last year, a record 88 participants registered.

The top vehicles, as voted by participants in a number of categories, will be awarded trophies.

Participants are also eligible to win a variety of great door prizes donated by local businesses.

A people’s choice award will also be awarded to one lucky winner, selected by the public.

The show and shine runs after the parade, from noon to 5 p.m. Trophies will be awarded at 4 p.m.

Participants are asked to line up at Blairmore centre access on 129th Street and proceed west on Main Street, where volunteers will direct them.

Registrations are $25 per vehicle and include a free T-shirt, fridge magnet and goodie bag.

In addition to Saturday’s show, everyone is invited to join a cruise on Friday evening along Highway 3, from Bellevue to Crowsnest Lake.

Entertainment and a chance to meet other owners are on tap.

A club has also been started to promote, show and ride antique, collector and newer cars, trucks and bikes. Members of the Wheel Nuts will enjoy the benefits of the club newsletter, cruises and other events.

If you’re interested in cars or bikes, there’ll be something at this year’s show and shine sure to take your fancy, and many owners who will be more than happy to show off their ride.

While people are encouraged to talk to owners and help celebrate the beauty of the vehicles, they are reminded to be respectful and not touch them.
