My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin Last week, I told myself, was the last time my editorial was going to focus on the effects of the flood. However, this week I’m going that direction again with a slightly different twist.

The devastation in High River has captured our attention and our hearts as we watch neighbours up the way deal with tremendous loss.

Volunteer efforts have been amazing and have come from near and far. Fundraising efforts have also been substantial.

I requested donations specially for my friend Angie who, along with so many others, is facing tremendous personal hardship. What a response there was!

Last Friday, my daughter and I visited with clothing, personal toiletries and some pet supplies that will benefit her family and the entire community. Kudos to all who gave so generously!

Thanks to Eila Morton, Oren and Heather Robison, Marilyn Lee and an anonymous donor, we also presented Angie with $2,150. This will make a huge difference to a woman and her children rebuilding pretty much from scratch.

One aspect of Angie’s story that is particularly neat involves the restoration crew of volunteers who came her way.

The first day she arrived to begin cleaning out her house (coded orange), she was completely overwhelmed. She had no idea where to start or what to do. By phone, her older brother told her to hang tight – he had contacted some friends and help was on the way for her.

These guys came in knowledgeable and prepared, and Angie says they worked harder than anyone could imagine.

It turns out they are from Pincher Creek. Many are familiar names to me, and I’ve been making phone calls to thank them personally for the difference their help has made to her emotional recovery as well as to the effort to restore her home.

As many flood victims have, Angie now helps others and pays it forward when things are at a standstill at her own home.

The way people have come together has been nothing short of amazing.

That’s why it was very distressing to me to see a message Lynn Makiev of Crowsnest Pass posted on Facebook last Thursday.

She mentioned a Pincher Creek woman who had been heavily impacted by the flood and was really struggling without help.

I contacted Lynn, who had Susan give me a call. It turned out to be Susan Robinson – one of my daughter’s teachers at Matthew Halton High School. If you have anything to do with the school, you will certainly know Ms. Robinson, who has taught there since the late ’80s.

To say that Susan is struggling is an understatement.

If many had been affected by the flooding locally it would likely be easy to get straight information, direction and answers. That hasn’t been the case.

Susan has muddled through the red tape, wrong turns and emotional turmoil primarily on her own. Almost a month later, she is still in a state of shock and faced with decisions and a situation I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.

While grateful to have her brother’s roof over her head and a couch to sleep on, she is not much further ahead now than she was immediately after the flood.

School colleagues took up a collection and a few friends have pitched in, but she and her dog, Saber, have basically been on their own.

The emotional support all flood victims need has not been there for Susan – not because people don’t care or wish her well, but simply because most are unaware of the tragedy in our back yard.

Social media is a hit-or-miss means of communication – I could have just as easily missed Lynn’s post as noticed it. Thanks, Lynn, for spreading the word and getting the ball rolling.

When making donations or volunteering for flood relief efforts, please consider helping a local woman who has been a positive contributor to our community. As we’ve been for High River, let’s be there for Susan!

Bellevue teepee ready for tourists

By Brad Quarin If you’ve driven on Highway 3 through Bellevue, you’ve likely noticed the building with a unique design reminiscent of a teepee.

It’s an ideal location for a resource for visitors, and on Saturday its grand reopening as the Crowsnest Tourist Information Centre was celebrated with balloons and a barbecue.

“We’re ready for business,” says economic development officer Sherry Poole.

The teepee was built about 50 years ago, originally as part of a hotel in Blairmore, and has a history of being used for tourist information. It now belongs to the Bellecrest Community Association and is located on its campground.

The community group used it as a meeting place and kept books there, but Sherry noticed the spot along the highway kept drawing tourists. So, she went to the chamber of commerce and other groups to get the teepee going again as the Crowsnest Tourist Information Centre.

It took some hard work, since the teepee needed renovations. They replaced boards, added a wheelchair ramp and repainted it.

“I’m a heck of a painter,” Sherry says.

Even before the grand opening, the teepee was put to use. “When we were in here ... doing the cleaning and the repairs, in any given day, we’ve had six to 10 tourists that stop by,” she says. She gave them brochures.

While the tourist information centre on the west side of Crowsnest Pass dispenses information about the region, the Bellevue teepee tells tourists about the Pass itself.

The brochures point to local places and events, and even trails for quads and skiing.

The teepee still needs more “ambassadors” working there to promote the Pass. Right now, Sherry, and Janis Entem, are getting help from high school students Emily Manzer and Amanda Ruzicka.

After Sherry visited the schools to explain the teepee, Emily took the opportunity, saying she’s “interested in the history of the Crowsnest Pass, and meeting people from all over.”

“I was looking for a job in the first place,” says Amanda, “and it just seemed kind of nice to be able to meet travelling folk and learn about what they were interested in here.”

Sherry intends for both students to be partnered with an adult volunteer. They’re looking for adults or seniors with some knowledge of Crowsnest Pass to come for a four-hour shift each week, to talk to tourists.

The babbling brook that became a raging river

By Shannon Robin While most school staff are enjoying summer holidays, Matthew Halton’s Susan Robinson will not be taking a vacation this year.

She originally planned to spend July and August moving forward and recovering from several personal issues. A botched surgery a year and a half ago almost cost Susan her life, and this winter she mourned the passing of her brother.

She was eager to move ahead. “This was going to be the summer to get things done and get on the ball,” she says. “Then this happened.”

Susan is an early riser, and the morning of June 20 was no exception. The day began as an emotional one – eight teachers were leaving MHHS and Susan was preparing for a farewell lunch.

After taking a load out to her vehicle, Susan returned to the kitchen. She hadn’t been warned of flooding potential, hadn’t noticed anything unusual on her trip outside, and had no idea what was about to hit her.

“I was halfway through cutting an onion when I heard a thunderous noise,” she says. “I had been back in the house less than five minutes, and suddenly the dog was whining – he never whines.”

In the lower level of the house, six to eight inches of water streamed past Saber. Out the window she saw a raging, muddy river where the lazy little creek in front of her house used to be.

Water covered the road and all sides of the house. She had the foresight to call 911 for help, and headed for higher ground with Saber.

David Cox, chief of emergency services, was in the Burmis area when the call came in, around 6:30 a.m. His crew had been monitoring area water levels since the middle of the night.

While flooding in June is not unusual, David says this one was unique. “It wasn’t days on days of rain that caused the flooding. Normally we don’t get this type of downpour over such a large area to cause a flash flood.”

“When responding, the water was already over Highway 744,” he says. “We could see that Beaver Mines Creek was out of its banks in several places.”

The rescue team arrived with a Zodiac boat and fire truck and assessed the situation. Beaver Mines firefighter Steve Oczkowski walked the water’s edge and found a point narrow enough to make a ladder bridge across the water. “This was a much safer option than using the boat,” David says.

worked his way to Susan and Saber and brought them safely to and across the bridge.

Susan has nothing but praise for the Beaver Mines and Pincher Creek emergency personnel who came to her rescue.

Susan spent the first two nights after the flood with friends Blanche and Rick Lemire. Since then, Susan has made her home on her brother’s couch.

Sleep is difficult to come by. While Susan has long used meditation as part of her daily ritual, “there’s a limit to what it can do when things build and build and build,” she says.

A major cause of stress has been the runaround she’s encountered while trying to get assistance.

She went first to the MD of Pincher Creek office, where she was told not to worry; she needed only to contact Belfor, a disaster recovery company, who would look after restoration of her property.

Tracking down contact information for Belfor was challenging, but Susan eventually found a number for the Lethbridge branch. “The manager

was very nice, but explained that jobs are assigned based on requests from municipalities and insurance companies,” she says. “He said, ‘Individuals can’t contact us,’ and added that all their staff were currently deployed to High River.”

She was told it was up to the MD to send in a team of experts to determine if and when it was safe to restore power and to return to her home.

Next, Susan spent many hours over several days to get an insurance claim number. It took more than a week to hear from an adjuster. Again she was told to wait for direction from MD experts with regard to reconnecting services and safely entering her home. And, of course, there is no coverage for overland flooding.

She tried calling contractors and says that of the few who returned her calls, all said they were either too busy with big jobs to help, or didn’t do the kind of work she needed.

She felt lost and without direction.

Susan says public health inspector Mike Swystun was awesome. “Even though it was bad news after checking out the property, he shared it with me in person and gave me oodles of information about dealing with flood cleanup,” she says.

While all of this was happening, Susan was guiding her students through final exams and slipping out to retrieve small treasures and valuables from the house.

When her brother, Cliff, had two days off and returned to Pincher Creek, they managed to bring some items from Susan’s house. With help from their nephew Dustin, and Gary Bowersock, they also removed freezers and a hide-a-bed.

The landfill was closed, but at least things were on their way out of the house.

Friends Camellia and Norbert Hune came from Calgary for a day to help as well. They moved several loads, including mouldy rugs, to the landfill.

Since then, things have largely been untouched.

Susan’s home, road, well and services were all compromised by the flood. The power line is exposed and lying in the creek on one side of the culvert, while the electrical lines for the well are on the other. No estimate has been given as to when it will be safe to have services restored.

Just reward for lifelong volunteer

It’s a simple message and one that local couple Earl and Marion Johnson, members of the strong Cowley branch, have taken to heart. Five decades of volunteer work, since joining, earned Earl the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal last September.

Like a number of other medal recipients, Earl shares the credit. “My wife has been a good part of it,” he says. “She always agreed for me to volunteer.”

“It’s as much hers as it is mine.”

Marion actually knew Earl was nominated before he did, as the nominator had contacted her. Earl was quite surprised.

He also extends thanks to his kids for their help with his volunteer work.

To Earl, the medal means “a tremendous amount.”

“I have volunteered for a lot of years. I do it without wanting recognition. You do it because you want to serve.”

Earl joined the Lions in 1963, when he was 26, which was about when he started volunteering, though he volunteers outside the club as well.

He was actually a founding member of the Cowley club, but that doesn’t come with any special privileges. His reasons for joining were altruistic. “I always believed in helping others,” he says. “It’s made a big difference in my life.”

There’s some reward in the “internal feelings,” and the Diamond Jubilee Medal is a “bonus.”

Over the years, he has held “all positions” in the club. Crowsnest Pass Lion Cliff Reiling says Earl worked at the district level “forever and ever” and was already well known within the Lions by 1978.

Armed with her registration number, Susan waited in line for hours in Lethbridge to receive an emergency funding payment of $1,250. Every penny will make a difference.

Last week she also attended a disaster relief meeting in Crowsnest Pass.

Susan’s home has been checked over by several professionals, and there are a variety of opinions for her to take into consideration.

Suggestions have been made for keeping the house area safe in the event of future flooding.

Direction has been given as to what work needs to be done to make Susan’s house livable – it is extensive – but not necessarily with a recommendation to proceed with the work. There is concern that initial assessments may no longer be valid due to mould growth.

While early reports indicated the attached porch could be removed and the balance of the home restored, the mould creeps further into all areas of the house with each passing day.

Whether restoration is worth the time, money and effort is ultimately what Susan needs to come to terms with. The differing opinions have gener-

Community Hall, Crestview Lodge, Pincher Creek Curling Club and the golf club. He also served a term as mayor of Cowley. “Very little remuneration for that, because it’s such a small village,” he recalls.

Although he’s not a member of the Pincher Creek Legion, he has pitched in with projects there. When the Legion had murals painted on their building, he and Bob Neish made a frame for the painter, and he did brickwork.

His volunteer work in Pincher Creek with a club for retirees has extended beyond the Legion.

They put up a bulletin board at the municipal district office, and a stainless steel plaque at the cemetery.

Coming from near Fort Macleod, Earl arrived at Cowley with his parents in 1951. He was a shareholder in Johnson Brothers Sawmills until 1984, and then held numerous jobs, including helping establish the first windmills on Cowley Ridge.

Today, his fellow Lions have good things to say about him.

“He’s very, very nice,” Cowley Lion George Dowson says. “You need something, he’ll try his best to get it accomplished.”

It was likely Earl and Marion who persuaded him to join the club. “And I don’t regret it,” George says. He feels Earl’s Diamond Jubilee Medal is “fitting.”

Cliff says Earl is a great volunteer in Cowley and Pincher Creek and a gentle person. “He’s a real peacemaker,” Cliff says, explaining Earl can always help people of opposing views reach a middle ground.

Cliff, who received a medal of his own at the same ceremony, says he “was just as happy as could be” about Earl’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Some who’ve seen the damaged house find it difficult to believe it can be restored, and wonder how it can possibly be healthy to return, even after mould remediation.

Monday evening she began digesting the possibility that her home may need to be condemned.

For almost a month Susan was hopeful of returning to her home, but this is no longer the case. “It’s really hard to get my head around this, but I need to focus on removing my antique furniture and other belongings,” she says. “It’s a lot to handle and I’m kind of in shock again.”

There is an option for Susan to move into a rental home she owns in Pincher Creek. This will help in the short term, but the home has extensive damage, courtesy of the last tenant, and is not in shape to move into immediately either.

As a counsellor, Susan has a sound understanding of the grief process, but that doesn’t make the situation any easier for her. The reality she faces is taking both a physical and a mental toll.

She also worries about Saber. It’s difficult for animals to deal with displacement as well. His only trips to town in the past were to visit the vet, and he’s not used to being on a leash all the time.

It breaks Susan’s heart to watch the big dog have nightmares every evening now.

Susan has lived in the peaceful spot off of 744 for over 20 years, and isn’t ready to give up on her dream. It’s a personal retreat and a place she loves.

“I’m going to try to make it work, and if the house can’t be saved, I hope to eventually rebuild.”

The majority of us were unaware that anyone so close to home was hurt in such an extreme way by the flood. Now that we know, we have the opportunity to pay Susan back for her good work in the community, by offering a helping hand.

Immediate concerns are removing her furniture before mould takes a firm hold, hauling what isn’t salvageable to the landfill and finding a home for Susan to begin a journey of healing.

Local athletes shine at Summer Games

By Brad Quarin As preparations begin for the 2014 Southern Alberta Summer Games, to be held in Pincher Creek, the community can take pride in a solid showing at this year’s Games in Taber, July 3 to 6.

Pincher Creek had more athletes in the Games than last year, which meant more medals, says Caitlin Kerr, the regional director for the MD. “They did really well,” she says. The athletes brought home 63 medals – 23 gold, 23 silver and 17 bronze.

The Games featured athletes of all ages and a variety of competitions. Pincher Creek had 85 participants, from age two to 73.

Caitlin, and Adam Grose of the town’s recreation office, were in Taber for the Games, and say they were entertaining and thrilling to watch.

For Caitlin, a standout event was baseball, where the boys and girls aged 11 and 12 won bronze. “That was pretty awesome.”

The girls in equestrian competitions also shone, and others “cleaned up” in swimming. Gayle McIntyre of Twin Butte excelled in photography with a picture of her father-in-law.

In soccer, Adam saw the under-16 and under-18 teams win gold medals. He was impressed with the Gelber family’s performance in cycling events, including boys Ronan and Mathias and their sister Browyn.

There was a big crowd and they seemed to enjoy the spectacle, especially the kids’ games.

Caitlin, who helped people register online for the Games and spread the news, complimented the Games at Taber as well organized and smoothly run.

It will be Pincher Creek’s job to make sure the 2014 Games go just as well. Town councillor Don Anderberg received the flag and gave a speech in a ceremony at Taber, signalling the Games have a new location.

Adam will represent the town in planning the 2014 Games and Caitlin wants to have a part in it as well. It’s going fine so far, with an executive mostly set up, Adam says.

They’re still looking for a Games chairperson to run the meetings and a culture chairperson to manage photography and other cultural events.

With a $5,000 grant from the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation, they’re planning more cultural events at the 2014 Games, maybe including quilting and native dancing, Adam says.

Zài jiàn, Iris, goodbye

By Brad Quarin Members of Pincher Creek’s Rotary Club gave a warm goodbye to Taiwanese exchange student Iris Wang at their luncheon last week.

Iris gave a PowerPoint presentation on Taiwan and her stay in Canada.

“I learned so many things,” she says of her time here. Her presentation went over a few of the things she experienced for the first time in her life, such as camping in a trailer, celebrating Thanksgiving and Easter, and seeing snow.

“I was so excited when Tom told me, ‘Iris, there’s snow out there!’ ” she recalls, referring to Tom Holoboff, the dad of her first host family.

The snow alone led to more first-time experiences, including building a snowman, skiing and snow fights.

She saw the Frank Slide, Drumheller and dinosaur fossils. She also took up fishing, target shooting, climbing – during which she bruised her knee – and riding.

“I showed pictures to my mom and dad in Taiwan, and they said, You’re a real cowgirl!” Iris says.

Her presentation also included facts about Taiwan, including its culture and how the country is shaped like a sweet potato, and pictures of her family and school in the city of Hualien.

The Rotarians were warm towards the exchange student, applauding when the club’s new

president, Lynn Brasnett, introduced “our very own Iris Wang,” and laughing at her stories.

“Thank you for everything in this year, this is the best year in my life,” she said.

Afterwards, Lynn commented that Iris has really come out of her shell over the year.

During that time, she has stayed with the Holoboff, Woodard and Crawford families in Pincher Creek. Iris comments that aside from her new experiences, her stay in Canada has been meaningful for the friendships made with her host families and others. “It’s just like another home.”

She describes the Holoboffs as like real family, says she learned much from the Woodards, and calls the Crawfords funny.

“Everyone’s my friend,” she says, especially her Canadian sisters Whitney and Amelia, who helped her with her English and how to adjust to Canada.

Her host brothers Bryce and Lane were like real brothers, with whom she could play fight.

Host dad Dan Crawford calls Iris “an easy keeper.”

“She’s easy with whatever was happening; she was happy to be part of it,” he says. “It was great having her there.”

Pincher Creek has also been a challenge for Iris, as English isn’t her first language and at times she could feel alone. Nevertheless, leaving Canada

Iris plans to study psychology in university, and now intends to take more English courses.

She’ll come back to Canada sometime, but doesn’t know if she’ll stay.

Meanwhile, the Rotary Club will be sending Iris’s host brother Lane Crawford to Germany in August. He says he is excited for the opportunity to go to Germany and applied because he likes to travel.

Gothic Knight promises high-powered entertainment

By Brad Quarin Meet the Gothic Knight.

“He actually grew up in Bellevue, and he’s gone on to become a world-famous wrestler,” says Penny Warris, who’s co-ordinating Rum Runner Days celebrations for Crowsnest Pass.

His name is Ed Gatzky and he lives in Lethbridge, but he still has a house in Bellevue and is returning this Saturday for Rum Runner Days.

Ed’s company, Pure Power Wrestling, will provide some of the entertainment for the Crowsnest Children’s Festival on Main Street Blairmore.

“I guarantee it’ll be pretty impressive,” he says. “I’m definitely looking forward to coming down.”

Pure Power Wrestling offers what he calls “high-powered entertainment” that’s actually family-friendly. That means no nudity or profanity, and kids can come and get their pictures taken with their heroes.

People particularly love it when the wrestlers meet the youngsters. “It’s something these kids remember forever,” says Ed, who has been approached by people who remember meeting him when they were little.

The violence doesn’t go over the top, but it’s still there. “We’ve got some of the biggest,

beefiest guys for an independent wrestling organization,” Ed says.

The characters are also quite colourful, and are used to tell a story over four hours, broken up into matches or “chapters,” building up to a big finish at 4:30 p.m.

In addition, Pure Power Wrestling will have a decorated truck in the parade that morning.

The company grew out of a demand for wrestling in the Lethbridge area. Ed and Tim (Stormbringer) Strom started it and are proud that it provides a family-oriented show.

Pure Power Wrestling also supports causes such as the Canadian Cancer Society, STARS, the food bank and little-league baseball.

Ed says it was a privilege to be raised in Bellevue, arriving when he was three. “It was great,” he says, adding it was “a whole different time.” He went to M.D. McEachern when it was still a school, learned to skate in the Bellevue arena and got involved in minor hockey.

While going to NAIT, he kept playing hockey and won the college-level national championships.

About 17 years ago, he was at the Lethbridge Fitness Centre when star wrestler Bret Hart came in, looking to advance his Calgary Hitmen club. At 275 pounds, Ed was discovered and hired to run Bret’s security.

Bret and Ed got along well. “He was a great, great guy, class act,” Ed says. Given Ed’s build, they also talked about getting him started in wrestling.

It was the beginning of a successful career that would take Ed to Australia, Germany and Puerto Rico. Ed calls his Gothic Knight character “a medieval master.”

Now, he has two daughters and a son living with him in Lethbridge, and they all enjoy visiting the Pass often.

Ed urges people uninterested in wrestling to come by the Blairmore Gazebo with an open mind, and says he looks forward to a “huge turnout and blowing minds.”

The Allied Arts Council of Pincher Creek recently held a celebration of new artists and new works in the Lebel Mansion gift shop. Listening to the desires of the artists, the arts council has been working on signage, has a new website that will debut next month, and open hours on Saturdays.

President Linde Farley says the gift shop has been recharged and has fresh work – if you want art from the area, this is where you would go.

The gift shop has been operating for at least 25 years and some artists have been enjoying it as a platform for their work since the 1980s.

In just four months, the number of displaying artists has increased from 10 to 29. With more artists involved, the arts council hopes to see more young people volunteering, displaying and learning about art.

Good energy at road ecology science cafe

By Brad Quarin Road Ecology 101, the science café held at the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre on July 11, was a hit, drawing over 40 people.

“It’s great to see so many local folks out on a beautiful summer night to talk about roads and how they affect wildlife in our community,” said Rachelle Haddock of the Miistakis Institute. She came all the way from Calgary to attend the event.

The Miistakis Institute supports Road Watch in the Pass, a project which allows the public to report wildlife crossings and roadkill on Highway 3.

Loretta Schaufele, a key local person in Road Watch, is happy with how the night went. “We were ecstatic to have that number show up,” she says, adding there was “good energy.”

Guests enjoyed refreshments while mingling with experts, and also saw concise, informative documentaries on highway mitigation.

Feedback from the public was positive, with written comments complimenting a “great presentation” and “great topic.”

Among the comments were Bob Garnier’s concerns that speed limits are too high for wildlife, and Susan Wagner’s suggestion that the Elk Valley could use a road watch project.

Other anonymous guests wrote that salt and litter on the road tend to attract animals.

Pincher Creek library moves to temporary home

By Brad Quarin As the Pincher Creek public library gets a facelift, the building has been closed for the summer. But fear not. Since manager Janice Day and her staff didn’t think Pincher Creek could go without a library that long, they’ve moved their services to a kiosk on Main Street.

“Main Street, there’s lots of action going on,” Janice says. “It’s close to everything; it’s fine for what it is.

The library board is renting the kiosk, next to ATB Financial, while renovations take place at the real library. Those renovations are expected to go until Sept. 9, and when they’re done the library may be practically unrecognizable. “It’ll look totally different when you walk in,” Janice says.

A big gain will be a soundproof multipurpose room, which can host meetings and videoconferencing or just serve as a quiet study space. It’ll also have folding doors.

Additionally, there will be new paint and carpeting, and the library will be rearranged, with the children’s room nearer to the door. Janice also hints there will be a few surprises.

Shell Canada donated $50,000 to the library in February to help make the remodelling possible.

The downside for now is that the kiosk offers less space for the library’s 25,000 books, movies, CDs and other items. While the library board succeeded in staying on Main Street, the kiosk is a little more challenging for seniors to enter, given only one door, without automatic opening.

“It makes us thankful for our own library,” Janice says.

The library staff knew there would be some difficulties in temporarily relocating. But Janice points out that while some books are boxed up and hard to get, Pincher Creek can get books from the Chinook Arch Regional Library System.

Pincher Creek library cards are good at any Chinook library.

The Pincher Creek library is still offering some programs for kids. These include the TD Summer Reading Club, starting today at the Parent Link building. The program encourages kids from kindergarten to Grade 6 to keep reading and engages them with literary games.

The Out and About program also runs every

Wednesday this summer, allowing kids 12 and under to go outside and see the wonders of Pincher Creek. Today, kids can take in Creek Adventures at Dillmer Park. For more information, call Parent Link at 403-627-5569.

There typically aren’t library programs for adults in the summer.

Janice estimates it’ll take two weeks to get the library organized and reopened after the renovations are finished, and they hope to have their grand opening during Alberta Culture Days, Sept. 27 to 29. “We think that would be a perfect celebration for the library,” she says.

Afterwards, the fall will possibly see courses on Internet searching. Story time, on Wednesday mornings, is a program for preschoolers that can involve reading or telling stories, singing or puppet shows.

In the meantime, people in Pincher Creek are still using the library through the new kiosk, and library staff are helping get the directions out.

Renaud is going places with his trusty mules

By Brad Quarin Renaud Wintzer – a neighbour of Terry Aris, who raises mules at Tired Ass Ranch off Highway 22 – is 13 and interested in driving mule-drawn carriages. He recently returned from a driving camp in British Columbia, where he learned much, and a competition west of Bowden, where he did well.

Renaud says he enjoys “just having a mule to take care of and driving it.” He likes doing things like brushing the mules, which are kind of like pets. He finds their big ears cute and admires their focus.

The driving is great because it’s an outdoor activity and, as Terry adds, it’s a challenge.

Terry taught the young driver a lot, Renaud says, namely how to drive and just what a mule is.

It was about three years ago when Terry started teaching Renaud combined driving, which involves going through obstacles. “We saw it as a way to really improve your driving abilities,” Terry says. “This is his first time working with big animals.”

They started off Renaud with a mule called Dolly, and now have him working with another one, Jake, training it to pull carriages.

It turns out Jake is as stubborn as a mule, giving them a little trouble. “He just decides that he’s had enough, and tries to leave,” Terry says. “You have to be quite firm with them.”

is cones, in which the carriage is driven between two cones with balls on top. Knocking a ball off a cone makes you lose points. It took plenty of practice to master this trick, Terry says.

Meanwhile, dressage requires fancy clothes and driving the carriage in patterns within gates.

“You have to memorize that pattern, and Renaud’s pretty good at remembering his patterns,” Terry says.

In April, Renaud and Terry went to Red Deer for the Mane Event, a demonstration of different kinds of horses. Renaud provided support for Terry, who was a feature presenter due to his reputation with working with mules, illustrated by his website, www.mrmules.com . They drove in a pattern.

“It was fun, because you got to know people and their horse and all the stuff that they did,” Renaud says. There were also horse-related arts and crafts, which were nice.

More recently, at the end of June they went to a CanDrive camp, learning from American and European instructors. He was taught to focus more, keep his lines even and use a whip. There was dressage and cones at the end of the event, where he did well.

Afterwards, they went to a competition called the Combined Driving Event on July 7 and 8, located at Stonebridge, west of Bowden. Renaud did well, placing first in the junior category and fifth in prelim. He feels good about his performance, and usually does about three to five competitions a year.

Renaud is an outdoorsy person, with other hobbies including fishing, hiking and basketball.

His favourite subject in school is social studies, and he’s going into Grade 8 at Livingstone School.

After finishing high school, he’d like to become a veterinarian.
