My Little Corner

By Brad Quarin It’s been nearly nine months since I started writing for Shootin’ the Breeze, and it’s been an interesting journey.

After finishing the journalism program at SAIT, I was looking all over Alberta and B.C. for a job before finding one in my own backyard.

One of the communities the Breeze covers is Crowsnest Pass, where I was born and raised.

But through research and meeting many people, I found out there was a lot about my own town I didn’t know.

Granted, my interests have always leaned more towards national and international politics and history than local matters, but it’s not just me.

People have told me they know the people I’ve written about, but had no idea they did what was described in the stories. Sometimes the articles cover local groups that some readers didn’t know were here.

Meeting many of the people in the Pass, as well as nearby towns, and writing about their projects has actually given me a rosier outlook on my community. I don’t really feel anymore that there’s nothing of interest here, and with few exceptions, find the people I meet to be nice and friendly.

To a degree, talking to people has always been a challenge to me because I am, by nature, kind of shy and prefer a low profile. But I think I’ve been getting better, and more than ever I know more of the people around me.

Many of the people I meet are interesting.

These include seniors who’ve done a lot of impressive things in their lives and are getting some recognition, like Kay Kerr who got the Diamond Jubilee Medal. Being interested in prime ministers, I made sure to ask her what John Diefenbaker was like, because she met him, as well as Colonel Sanders.

Then there are young people who are already community-minded, like Shael Davidson, who at age four hit on the idea of collecting socks for kids in need at Christmas. Or Grade 8 student Anna Koevoet, who seems to do absolutely everything.

It’s not just people I’ve met for the first time.

Part of it has been talking to people I already knew, catching up with them and learning more about who they really are. These include people who used to be my teachers, and my first interview on the job was with Karen Tamminga-Paton, who taught me art at Isabelle Sellon School.

Outside the Pass, I’ve certainly gotten to know Pincher Creek and Lundbreck better than I did before. I’ve been amazed at how many active volunteers come out of Pincher Creek, in spite of the town’s small size.

I asked Art Bonertz about that. He used to be the mayor of Pincher Creek and received the Diamond Jubilee Medal himself. (The article about that is on page 4.) Art thinks the community’s culture of volunteerism is inherited from the pioneers who started the town. When I met publisher Shannon Robin for the first time, she told me there are a lot of stories of interest in the area, and she wasn’t kidding.

It would be hard for me to pick a favourite story I’ve done. I’m proud of the stories that have gotten the most positive feedback, including the ones about young Shawn Hammond’s egg business or Mountie Doug Sokoloski’s drumming video. I’m more into writing than photography, so I’m thrilled whenever someone likes one of my pictures.

So, I’m glad to be with Shootin’ the Breeze.

Shannon’s idea when starting it was a good one, and she continues to put a lot of hard work into it.

By and large, the people I’ve talked to appreciate what she does.

It’s time for the Cowboy Show!

By Brad Quarin For ranchers and cowboys of Alberta and British Columbia, it’s show time.

The Ranch Rodeo Cowboy Show is set to return to the Pincher Creek agricultural grounds this weekend, showcasing ranch work unlike what you’ll see at an ordinary rodeo.

“I’m excited about the whole rodeo,” says Shelley Stokke, who’s helping to organize the show and enjoys seeing all of its events.

Jennifer Eek, who’s helping Shelley, explains the Cowboy Show is meant to “showcase the western way of life.” They say the activities all reflect a cowboy’s work and all of the participants come from ranch backgrounds.

The Cowboy Show activity that bears the most resemblance to one at a pro rodeo would be the bronc riding. But Jennifer says even that one is unique, with participants bringing their own stock saddles.

Besides that, the Cowboy Show features stock dog trials, in which dogs herd sheep through courses, and long loop roping, where cowboys throw rope at a target from a distance.

The ranch horse competition has participants on horses separating an animal from its herd or roping a cow or yearling.

A highlight is the wild cow milking, where a team ropes a cow while riding horses and milks it, Shelley and Jennifer say.

Prizes for events include two-piece silver buckles, neck scarves, pocketknives and special hats.

Ranch rodeos are popular in Canada, and Pincher Creek’s is one of the longest-running in the country, Shelley says. She believes it’s been held for over 30 years.

The event is free to attend, except the supper on Saturday in the beer gardens along with the long loop roping, which costs $16.

The Cowboy Show is entirely funded by donations from the community, mainly businesses, with sponsors this year including ATB Financial, UFA, McRae Holdings and Pickard Veterinary Services. Any donations that aren’t needed to pay for the prizes are passed on to Pincher Creek Emergency Services, the SPCA and the ag society.

The Cowboy Show starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday.

First anniversary of service in sight for Ricky Ryp Foundation

By Brad Quarin As August nears, the Ricky Ryp Foundation will soon reach its first anniversary of continuing the charitable work of the late Rick Rypien, an NHL player from Coleman.

Rick’s older brother, Wes Rypien Jr., is feeling great about that milestone. “We had a very successful year last year,” he says. “It’s about continuing Rick’s legacy, but at the same time it’s about helping people, and as we move forward it will be more about helping people.”

“We’re looking to be able to donate at least twice as much.”

Rick Rypien was born in Blairmore in 1984 and went on to play in the NHL for the Vancouver Canucks. Wes says he and his brother were close for all of Rick’s life. They depended on each other after their parents divorced, and they lived together.

“There’s not too much that we didn’t know about each other,” Wes says. He describes Rick before his depression as outgoing and easy-going.

“He liked to be around people a lot.” That includes friends and family at home.

Wes knows Rick loved his sport when he was younger, but is less certain about his professional years. “Everybody thinks it’s something that you would love to do, but there’s a lot of stress,” Wes says. Having played in the Western Hockey League himself, he understands.

During his hockey career, Rick attended and donated to charitable events such as the Bill Fukami Memorial Golf Tournament and taught hockey school at the Coleman arena. “Not just here in the Pass, but in Vancouver, the other towns that he played hockey in, he gave back whenever he could,” Wes says. He thinks charity was important to Rick, and people respected him

for that.

Kids of Crowsnest Pass don’t have the same opportunities provided by urban areas, which may have motivated Rick. “That was more about just being himself,” Wes says. “That was when Rick was himself, when he was back home.”

Rick’s death in August 2011 made national news. “You just find a way to cope with it,” Wes says. “There’s not actually a day that goes by where I don’t think about him.”

The idea of starting the foundation came to Wes, and the interest others showed in raising money in Rick’s name helped him decide to execute the idea.

Currently there are 13 or 14 members of the Ricky Ryp Foundation, with Wes serving as president. He estimates there are also about 30 volunteers. Applications to volunteer are on the website, rickyrypfoundation.ca, and the foundation will be taking them after their tournaments are done with. Volunteers are needed for setting up events, like the golf tournament in August, and cleaning afterwards.

The non-profit foundation aims to provide funding to two categories of people in southern Alberta and Elk Valley.

The first category is those in need, meaning those who have medical issues or injuries that prevent them from working. The other is local talent, people pursuing athletics, academics or arts.

The foundation has already helped some

people. “The first beneficiaries that we were going to give money to, we kind of went and looked for them,” Wes says. One, Derek Sharp, is a friend of Wes. Another is Joe Mahieux, a former bus driver in the Pass, who suffered a fall and became paraplegic.

“They purchased new appliances for me to make things easier,” Joe says. These include a washer, a dryer, a fridge and a deep freeze which he describes as “easier to get at.”

Also among those helped is Brenda Macdonald of Coleman, who received some assistance from the foundation and other donors in preparation for a double lung transplant.

“When we take on a person like that, it’s not just a one-time thing,” Wes says. “We want to help them for as long as they need help.”

The foundation has encouraged the three beneficiaries to provide updates and reapply next year for continued funding.

Others who need help can apply online, with new beneficiaries being selected every year and money given out in November. Exceptions can be made and money given out sooner in case of emergencies.

As mentioned, the golf tournaments are just around the corner, and hockey school registration will come shortly after. Thanks, Wes, and to everyone else making the Ricky Ryp Foundation possible.

The Art of public service

By Brad Quarin Former Pincher Creek mayor Art Bonertz imagines it was hard to select recipients for the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

“We have amazing volunteers in this community,” he says.

In September, one of those medals went to Art. “To be singled out was gratifying but in the same breath a little bit humbling, because I know how hard so many people worked to make this a better community,” he says. “There’s a lot of people in the community who deserve it as much or more than I do.”

Still, Art says he also worked hard for a better Pincher Creek. His roles in the community have included rancher, owner of the Ford dealership and mayor for two terms.

“Volunteerism in this community is a way of life. It’s what makes our community successful as it is,” he says. As mayor, he felt the town was distinguished by a culture of selflessness.

So where did that culture come from? “I think it’s rural in its roots, I think the pioneer spirit of looking out for your neighbour and helping out has come down through the generations,” he says.

The Bonertz family itself has pioneer roots, with five Bonertz brothers arriving to the area around 1900, he says. Today, the surname is common in Pincher Creek.

Having worked as a rancher for nearly 20 years, Art bought the Ford dealership in 1989.

His time at Future Ford was successful, with the chamber of commerce naming it business of the year twice.

From there, he became mayor in 1998, due to “a willingness to serve” and a vision concerning economic development. “I really wanted to move that vision forward,” he says. “And I guess I was pretty passionate about it.”

Susan Aris was reeve of the municipal district while Art was mayor, and seems to think the role fit him. She says Art “always put his community first,” and calls him “a very strong visionary” and “a natural leader.”

As an advocate of economic development, he invited the mayors of Fort Macleod and Cardston and John Irwin of Crowsnest Pass to his kitchen table.

There, they started the Mounties to Mountains Economic Regional Initiative, now the Alberta SouthWest Regional Economic Development Alliance, for economic co-operation.

The old name, selected by former Mountie Cliff Reiling, was colourful, and while it didn’t last, the organization itself has prospered.

Susan also recalls Art as a big supporter of wind energy. He supported clean energy, generally. “I was a farmer-rancher,” he says. “All the farmers and ranchers in this community are environmentalists.”

So, he helped persuade the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association to include 20 per cent clean and renewable energy in its aggregation of power.

Subsequently, he was a finalist in the Emerald Awards, given out for “environmental excellence” by the Alberta Emerald Foundation.

More importantly, it’s part of his legacy. “I think it set a trend in the province that clean energy is important to us,” he says. “It was a game changer back in those times.”

One controversial task he took on was getting Vista Village, a new model for seniors care, up and running. Despite a big protest, Art feels Vista Village is now seen favourably, and his mom and dad would live there.

Besides such weighty matters, as mayor he also supported beautifying the town through Communities in Bloom, murals and the silhouettes. “I think it has made a difference,” he says. “It sets a tone as a community that’s proud of its past and optimistic about its future.”

Looking back on his six years as mayor, he thinks he could have done even more. “I will say that we did the best we could.”

Now retired, these days Art volunteers a bit at the museums, Heritage Acres and Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village. He likes working with tools and does what’s needed.

He and his wife also travel a lot, and 11 grandkids, aged eight to 22, keep him busy.

“And I love it,” he says. His family is his proudest achievement.

As a founding member of Pincher Creek’s Rotary Club, Art believes in the saying that “service is the price we pay for the space we occupy.”

Community work develops friendships while producing achievements, as good people “come up with new and creative ways to make the community a better place,” he says. “It becomes a win-win.”

For Art, another win would be the Diamond Jubilee Medal he received from MP Ted Menzies at Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village.

Science and History Day at Waterton

By Brad Quarin Waterton Lakes National Park is more than a tourist destination. It’s also a place of study for scientists and historians, as is Glacier National Park south of the border.

Next Tuesday is your chance to enjoy the fruits of the labour of those working in Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.

Waterton-Glacier Science and History Day will see scientists and historians sharing their research with the public.

“It’s a really neat day,” says Queenie Gray, a resource conservation technician at Waterton. She’s attended the event in the past and says she feels excited and honoured to be presenting for the first time there.

“I’m kind of proud.”

“Anybody and everyone is invited,” says Denise Germann, public affairs officer at Glacier National Park.

The two parks take turns hosting the event, and this year the presentations will be given at West Glacier Community Building.

The idea behind the event, going into its 10th year, is to give the public the latest information in an easy way to understand, Denise says.

It’s “an opportunity for dialogue,” as the presentations can come with questions and answers.

Queenie remarks that you might hear these projects exist, but without Science and History Day you’d probably know very little about them.

Although the event is taking place in Montana and both historical topics specifically relate to Glacier, other topics are relevant to Waterton, says Ardelle Hynes, acting communications officer at Waterton. Canadian researchers will be speaking there.

One of them, Queenie, will be talking about the introduced trout population of the park. She just finished her project, looking at the effects of the fish brought to the park from the 1920s to the 1980s.

“All the lakes were originally fishless,” Queenie says. People no longer introduce fish to the park because of concern of how it changes the natural ecosystem.

In her research, she looked at how the fish affected plankton and invertebrates, and was surprised to find results differed in different lakes. “It wasn’t the impact I was expecting to find.” She believes the findings are relevant to other places in the Rockies with introduced fish.

She will be discussing her work with a PowerPoint presentation and pictures.

Other topics address “cross-border issues,” Ardelle says. These include a look at the relationship between wolves, aspen and fire, and the bat inventory project, which tracks numbers and kinds of bats in the international park. They’ve discovered three new species there, and the presentation will be given by Lisa Bate of Glacier National Park.

Additionally, the grizzly bear monitoring project is of interest to Waterton, Ardelle says, and Denise also thinks the bear presentation should be interesting. It will be given by Amy Macleod of the U.S. Geological Survey.

The speakers are a mix of Canadian and American scientists and researchers, each charged with studying aspects of the international park. The park approached the experts to ask them to take part in the event, Denise explains.

In the past, feedback for Science and History Day has been positive.

People appreciate having more understanding of technical parts of the park, Denise says. Anyone interested in science and history should come.

New owners for HomeChek CNP

By Brad Quarin The torch has been passed for the Crowsnest Pass small business HomeChek, as local artist Nichole Yanota has sold it to Sarah Thomsen and Cory Davis of Coleman.

Property owners in Crowsnest Pass will still have the option of leaving town for a significant length of time and knowing their homes are in good hands.

Nichole didn’t advertise the business for sale, instead offering it to a handful of select people she knew. “I just discreetly tapped a few people on the shoulder,” she says. “[Sarah] has a good head for business. I think she’s worked a lot independently in the past, and she’s a self-starter, self-motivated, attention to detail – all of those things are must-haves.”

HomeChek is a small business that has people check houses now and then when the owners are away, providing some peace of mind. As Nichole notes, such checkups also satisfy insurance requirements. Responsibilities can include receiving a delivery, feeding a pet or watering a plant.

The business started up in the Pass in 2006 as the brainchild of Florence Desaunoy, who had heard of similar services provided in other towns, Nichole recounts.For the last two years it has been run by Nichole, who bought it figuring it would be a good business she could run from home while creating her art.

She says clients’ expectations crystallized while the service was under her management. “I just spent a lot of energy organizing things,” she says.

But the basic idea has stayed the same.

Recently, Nichole decided she “wanted to switch things up” and move on to something else.

Since Sarah is a trustworthy friend, Nichole offered the business to her.

“I thought it was a really interesting proposition ... and to be honest with you, I was jealous that she had the business in the first place,” Sarah says, laughing. “That sounds like such a good little small business to have on your own.”

After about a day and a half, Sarah took the offer. “It just felt like a really good fit for my own lifestyle,” she says, as the schedule could be flexible.

She also felt she had plenty of experience watching out for things, having been a fire lookout for 15 years. Nichole also feels Sarah has “a passion for home caring.”

Cory agrees the new job fits Sarah. “We’re going to have a kid in August, so ... the scheduling and everything else, it works,” he says. “We both like to go out and do stuff.”

As Sarah checks the houses, she may rely on Cory for maintenance issues she can’t handle. There is one other employee.

Throughout June, Nichole taught Sarah the ropes. “She’s taught me everything,” Sarah says, as they’ve met, talked and done some walk-throughs.

For example, she’s learned how to work different kinds of alarm systems and how to put together a checklist of things to watch and questions to ask the homeowner. Sarah also says she’s learning to deal with different kinds of customers.

hiring the company as they are meeting you and trusting you,” Nichole says.

Both the former and current HomeChek owners say its services are widely used. The service is kept affordable, and the cost can be as low as $25 per month, depending on the work.

For now, Sarah and Cory aren’t planning any major changes for HomeChek. They’ll keep everything the same for a year, have their baby and then think of changing policies or spreading to other towns, Sarah says.

Meanwhile, Nichole is concentrating on her art for now. She calls it “figurative expressive works,” employing the human shape and symbolism.

My journey to become a ‘sinner’

Motivation for doing great things is often driven by family and friends. Leslie Claringbull would not have attempted and finished a 32kilometre leg of Sinister 7 without the support of her family.

By Leslie Claringbull After seeing an ad asking for volunteers for last year’s Sinister 7 Ultra + Relay, I decided to sign up.

During the weekend of July 6 to 8, 2012 I set up camp at McGillivray staging area (also transition area 4/6). Friday afternoon I helped out with registration and was instantly caught up in the energy of the runners. Saturday morning I met a great group of volunteers and we proceeded to set up TA 4/6.

As the day went on, the temperature skyrocketed. As runners arrived at our station, it was evident the high temp was playing havoc with their bodies and race. What totally blew me away was that no matter how affected the runners were by the heat, they were all very appreciative of the volunteers, something as a volunteer I had never experienced at that level before.

I left that Sunday so excited and inspired by the runners and volunteers.

Five months later, my daughter Danielle said she and some co-workers were thinking of putting together a team for 2013, and asked if I would be interested. My reply was “Yes, just don’t give me a leg that I will have to run in the dark.”

The day of registration came with mixed feelings. I knew the race sold out very quickly and have to admit that a small part of me hoped we wouldn’t be one of the lucky ones.

Well, the race sold out in 13 minutes! And we

were in – I started to panic!

This spring we trained for the Calgary Half Marathon, and once that was completed we ran some trails in Waterton and did a short run on Leg 4, which was my leg to run. There was a very good chance that I would be in the dark for a portion of it.

As race day quickly approached, my anxiety level drastically increased. I was consumed with my fear of running in the dark and, although I made constant jokes about it, my fear was very real, resulting in many sleepless nights and a constant huge knot in my gut.

July 5 arrived much too quickly. As I packed up my gear and double-checked that I had everything, panic set in and I started wondering, “What have I gotten myself into?”

Danielle and I headed out to Coleman for a volunteer shift at registration and the pre-race meeting, and my panic increased even more!

After the meeting, we headed up to McGillivray, where we had set up the camper earlier that day. We had just fallen to sleep when we were startled awake by some campers setting off fireworks nearby. Sleep did not come easy for us after that, and 5 a.m. came much too quickly.

Danielle and I headed into Blairmore, where we were scheduled to volunteer at the starting area at 6 a.m.

SINNER, continued from page 7 This was a great distraction for me and, as we helped set up the start area, I actually started to relax and feel some of the excitement.

We saw our first runner, Dr. Rob Cameron, off and headed back to camp for some breakfast and to pick up our gear. About 9 a.m. we headed to transition area 2/3, where our Leg 2 runner, Maria Ostrensky, came in around noon, and Danielle set out on Leg 3.

Five hours later, I started out on Leg 4. All my anxieties, fears, self-doubt and insecurities surfaced in the first eight kilometres and, considering my leg was 32 kilometres, this was not a good thing.

The conversation going on in my head had me ready to quit and I seriously contemplated different scenarios that I might possibly use to drop out, and I know I would have if there hadn’t been five other people counting on me to complete my leg. I had difficulty getting myself out of this mental battle and, with little to distract me, my confidence plummeted and my insecurities soared and I physically felt defeated.

I wonder if the many runners who passed me

during this time knew how much I needed to hear the words of encouragement they offered.

I eventually started singing the ABCs in my head to drown out the discouraging words I was sabotaging myself with. I have no idea how many times I repeated them, forwards and backwards, but it did give me the distraction I needed and I was able to start focusing on the run.

The volunteers were wonderful at each of the water stations along my route. They were all so cheerful and encouraging, and I hope they knew when I thanked them how much I truly appreciated them being out there.

Along the way I paused for the occasional photo of the beautiful surroundings, and as dusk approached I stopped to put on my headlamp.

The time that I had dreaded and feared so much was quickly approaching. I continued on and I’m not sure what was going through my head at this point, other than to keep my eyes focused straight ahead. I was surprised that as it got darker my fears lessened – I just wanted to get through those last few kilometres.

Finally, relief came when I started to hear the people and see the lights at the transition area (end) of my leg. Chalsey Dingreville was our Leg

5 runner and all I had a chance to say to her was, “I’m sorry I didn’t get here sooner!” And off she went into the dark.

Earlier in the day, while waiting for my start, we were discussing if we’d ever consider doing the race again. I honestly didn’t know at that point but Clive, who has run a few times, said it becomes addicting and you want to do better each time.

I stated to my family shortly after completing my leg that I would never do this again!

After a few hours of sleep, I was up and greeting our Leg 6 runner, Clive Mountford, as he finished, and cheering Dr. Cameron as he headed out on Leg 7 to the finish. We were there when our last teammate crossed the finish line at 7:32 a.m. We had completed the 148 kilometres in 24 hours 32 minutes! We did it!

On the drive home, just a few hours after the episode of self-destructive babbling in my head, I think the realization of what we had accomplished finally sank in, and while my “runner’s high” kicked in I was already thinking about what I would do differently next year!

It was great sharing this experience with our team – In Agony But Lookin’ Good – and I hope we are all there in 2014, doing it again!

Co-op localizes

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek Co-op is joining forces with the Localize Project, based in Edmonton, to highlight local products available to shoppers.

The food labelling initiative allows customers to scan labels on products with their smartphones to find out just where the product came from.

For less tech-savvy customers, the labels also score products on a scale from zero to 10, with 10 being the most local.

“The grassroots of Co-op is supporting the community,” says general manager David Crowell. “We try to buy local wherever possible.”

While the Pincher Creek Co-op has always had local products, they can now promote them better, and customers are appreciating it.

“They want to buy local,” David says. “We’ve had a lot of great comments already.”

David says he chose to adopt the initiative because of the Localize Project’s experience providing this service to the Calgary Co-ops.

The Localize Project had much of the work done already, with scores on the products. To fully implement the program in Pincher Creek, Co-op had to do its homework, calling suppliers that likely qualified for the Localize program and listing their products.

The big challenge was how long it took to get the program working in Pincher Creek, about three months, David says.

Most of the local products are grown nearby, like the produce from Red Hat in Redcliff, but there are also products like ice cream from Fort Macleod.

Co-op’s preference to patronize local products helps the community by supporting local employment, David says. He also hopes there’s an environmental benefit, with less trucking required for local products.

Shorter trucking distances should satisfy those concerned with the so-called 100-mile diet. “You don’t have to get something trucked in from a thousand miles away,” David says. This hopefully means fresher foods with a “fairly equal” price.

If you don’t have a smartphone, you can ask the staff to help you read the labels.

Co-op’s next big project will be to offer more gluten-free foods, including breads and flour substitutes.

The Breeze Mailbox Thanks, Economy Cleaners The weekend after the flood in High River was supposed to be their high school graduation.

Within days, there was a request on social media for anyone from Pincher Creek willing to give or lend dresses to the young women of High River.

I have two daughters who had graduated from Matthew Halton (Madison Breckenridge and Charmayne Old Shoes). Both were eager to help, but both dresses required cleaning. I called Economy Cleaners, explained the situation and asked how fast they could get the dresses ready.

Not only did these wonderful people get these dresses done in record time, they refused payment for their services!

As it ended up, the grad has been postponed until the end of next month, but my girls’ dresses are ready to go to the young women of High River who have lost so much.

Summer reading fun for kids

By Brad Quarin A nicer day outside doesn’t mean kids should give up reading completely over the summer.

“They say that kids will lose a lot of what they learned through the year if they don’t do anything for the summer months,” says Diane deLauw of Crowsnest Pass Municipal Library. “Having that little extra reading helps them go into the next grade.”

Fortunately, kids have a chance to go to the library for a summer reading program and activities for an hour a week, thanks to TD Bank.

The TD Summer Reading Program is being offered by both the Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek public libraries, with Pincher Creek’s running out of the Parent Link building.

The programs are aimed at preschool kids and ages six to 12, Diane says.

Pincher Creek library manager Janice Day explains that while TD Bank finances the program, the program itself is written by National Library of Canada librarians.

Smaller libraries like hers then receive optional plans and themes. “We have very talented people in this library who could easily do it, but it is a help to have reading lists and activities,” Janice says.

The program consists of reading stories, making crafts and taking part in literacy games and songs, maybe while wearing a costume reflecting the theme. As Diane notes, kids collecting stick-

ers in the program can go to the TD website and enter the codes from the stickers to play games.

Contests for prizes are part of the program, but Janice says they’re not really competitive. Kids can also keep a log book and collect prizes for a certain number of hours of reading. Prizes are small things, as well as book bags provided by TD Bank.

This year’s overall theme is Go, which Diane explains is a general concept covering different methods of travel and places to go to.

The first week covered trains and cars and the second week looked at Hawaii as a destination.

For those themes, the kids at the Pass library acted out a story and made train-shaped fridge magnets or little race cars, followed by a relay race.

The programs are run by the local library staff, namely Tany Warkentin in Pincher Creek and Angela Janiga in Crowsnest Pass.

To prepare, people of Chinook Arch Regional Library System went to Horace Allen School, Isabelle Sellon School and Livingstone School to advertise the program in the Pass, Diane says.

Local staff also picked the books to read.

The Pincher Creek library is undergoing renovations, but library staff made sure to collect 10 bins of books for the program before packing up, Janice says.

The Pass library has had the summer reading program before, Diane says, and it has been a big success. Last year there were more than 40 kids from Crowsnest Pass and Lundbreck registered, although not all came at once.

For the kids, the program offers the opportunity to see friends from school in the summer, make new friends and enjoy crafts. Some kids also borrow books while visiting the library, Diane says.
