My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin It’s annoying and funny at the same time how long it can take to get back into the swing of things after a holiday. The longer the break, the more difficult it is to get back on track.

After a weeklong vacation, I don’t think I could have come back to a busier week, with a big paper and major events scheduled in Brocket, Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek.

In the end, we all survived!

On Sunday, I discovered the diopter adjustment knob on my camera had been changed and not set back to the originally setting. This tiny wheel on DSLR cameras can make a huge difference to the way you see things. It could be through the effect of the setting of your lens, or through the effect of poking a finger in your eye while trying to adjust it.

I laughed when I read this in my camera manual, and again when I promptly stuck my finger in my eye on my first attempt to look through the eyepiece and turn the knob at the same time. Thank goodness for glasses acting as safety goggles.

It’s not an adjustment most people would fiddle with after finding a degree of focus that works well. But I had, and while I thought I was quite brilliant at the time, I had to kick myself for forgetting to go back to the original setting.

For the rest of the week I snapped pictures, quite oblivious to the fact that I wasn’t seeing things exactly as others were seeing them.

As I tried to find the best shots to use in this week’s edition, the slight skews got me thinking of how perceptions aren’t always crystal clear and of how impressions change.

Not too many years ago, a tour called Booze and Bars would have caught my attention to see what drink offerings were on tap.

On Friday, when Brenda Shenton and I joined the group at the Doors Open and Heritage Festival, I was more interested in the Crowsnest Pass history our hostess was sharing. I took slightly-out-of-focus pictures of stained-glass

windows and murals and had no need for a designated driver. I noticed things I likely wouldn’t have seen if I had only dropped in for a beer.

I was disappointed that bad weather resulted in cancellation of the Heritage Acres Annual Show.

Friends who’ve known me a long time would get a chuckle out of this. I was the kid who grew up in a rural area with absolutely no concept of farm life. I can identify a few pieces of farm equipment and a few crops but not consistently.

I first visited Heritage Acres for this show last year, and spent the weekend exploring the huge museum. The show itself was great fun, and the family histories most impressive – the experience changed my perception and respect for agricultural life and cultivated a new interest.

Powwows are not new to me. I love the bright colours and the beating drums you can feel in your chest for days afterward. This year, my attention was captured by the family aspect of traditions that played out during the grand entrance. Generations danced together and the youngest were anxious and proud to take part.

I recognized the Piikani school princesses and pageant contestants, and noticed dancers who had caught my attention at previous powwows. Amid the traditional cultural celebration, I watched two teens dancing side by side and passing a cellphone between them. This is the first I’ve seen of texting and dancing!

My impression of the history of our area, and those who are working so diligently to share and preserve it, grows each time I attend events like this. I don’t just show up to take a picture and leave, I come for the experience and the lessons.

Every day we are fortunate to have opportunities to change our focus and look at things differently. You may feel you have seen all there is to see of a person, a place or a thing, but with a slight shift in focus you might find there’s more than meets the eye. The most amazing thing is how much there is to see and how much room there is for our impressions to change and grow.

Hard to believe it has already been 20 years since the park started running herd on spotted knapweed. But together, staff and volunteers have succeeded in keeping it corralled!

Knapweed is an invasive plant that can take over native landscapes by releasing toxins from its roots and producing up to 12,000 seeds from a single plant. By pulling knapweed before it goes to seed, we can continue to keep it corralled.

A familiar voice around town

By Brad Quarin For years, Bob Westrop has served as the face and voice of many fundraisers, auctions, rodeos and other events in Pincher Creek and area.

Having mastered his role as master of ceremonies, Bob received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in September.

“Bob has a tremendous gift of being able to pull people together in the spirit of harmony and laughter, and this community has been very fortunate to have him in it,” says former mayor Art Bonertz. “I’m very happy that he was singled out.”

Born and raised in Calgary, Bob moved near Cowley on the Crowsnest River, and when that property flooded he came to Pincher Creek. He bought a farm and still keeps cattle.

As a farmer, he got involved in the agricultural society and became president. His MC work “just grew out of that,” he says.

As an MC, he gives each event a face and personality. “Lots of people do the real work, and I get to be the front man,” he says.

Bob’s familiarity with many locals underlies much of his MCing. “He’s got stories, he’s got jokes, because he knows so many people in the community,” says Janet Watmough, the current ag society president. “When you see him at any of the functions that he’s the MC at, you have no idea where he pulls his stuff from.”

This style makes the event more personable, she says. “The crowd’s never bored.”

“He’s comfortable with his neighbours,” Art says. “He’s relaxed and he relaxes everybody around him, and he does it with humour and positive reinforcement.”

Bob has kept up his MCing for years.

“People ask, and I don’t want to say no,” he says. “And I think it’s fun. I have a good time doing it.”

Janet feels Bob believes in his causes, as well. “He’s a very, very good, communityminded individual,” she says. “If he sees something that’s important, he’s there to help in

getting on the bus with Australian farmers visiting Pincher Creek and telling them about the town.

One of his more memorable causes was helping to establish Pincher Creek Community Hall while president of the ag society, with help from the Lions, the Elks and the town. “Before we had that, we didn’t have any place in town to have functions,” he says.

Janet also notes Bob is a participant at the local rodeo, and has done gymkhana with kids.

“It’s great, because he seems to know every single kid that’s out there,” she says. She adds that he helps organizes the parade rodeo and has long MCed the ag society’s cowboy poetry event.

For Janet, a memory that stands out about Bob’s role in the rodeo is his promotion of events using the speakers on his truck. He advertised a pie-eating contest with them, and she’s seen him use the speakers at Heritage Acres, too.

Fork Fest – let’s eat local!

By Brad Quarin Pizza, poutine and sloppy joes are just some of the tasty meals you can try out at special prices during Pincher Creek’s first Fork Fest, starting Friday.

The promotion, running until Aug. 23, is part of the Think Local First campaign. The initiative began last year with the slogan Shop Smart, Shop Local, but was expanded to look at “the broader picture,” says Lieve Parisis, administrator of the Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce.

“It’s not actually about just shopping local, it’s about living local, playing local, eating local.”

Fork Fest is a fun way to support local coffee shops, diners, restaurants and bistros, while “bringing the community together,” she says.

Lieve took the idea to local eateries, needing five to take part to get the promotion off the ground. Ten hopped on board, and were happy to participate in a community event.

While the customers get a deal, the businesses also benefit because more people will discover what they have to offer.

Lunch costs $6.95 and supper costs $11.95, a consistent price at all participating businesses: Beaver Mines General Store, Boston Pizza, Bright Pearl, Celestial Sweets, Denise’s Bistro, Mrs. P’s, September Springs Ranch, T-Bar Pub, The Grill and Twin Butte Restaurant.

Of course, the regular menus will also be available during Fork Fest.

It’s no accident Fork Fest lasts throughout the rodeo and parade in Pincher Creek, a time when more tourists will be visiting, Lieve says.

Besides the opportunity to enjoy deals on local dining, Fork Fest offers a chance to win $20 gift certificates from participating businesses. Save your receipts and submit them to the chamber office in Ranchland Mall to be entered into the draw. You can also enter by posting pictures or comments on Facebook.

Recycling the ghost town of Lille

By Brad Quarin Quick, what are things you can recycle?

Did you say bottles? Pop cans? Paper? How about a town?

Lille, a community that existed from 1901 to 1913, is the ghost town of Crowsnest Pass.

But part of Lille lives on, and the Crowsnest Museum is busy finding those bits and pieces throughout the Pass for its new exhibit, Lille Recycled.

“The premise is to tell the history of the town of Lille,” says Chris Matthews, executive director of the museum. The project aims to highlight and also discover houses and buildings that used to be in Lille and are now elsewhere.

Some buildings were moved in one piece and others were taken apart and reassembled in Bellevue, Hillcrest, Blairmore, Coleman, Frank and even the Cowley-Lundbreck area, Chris says. “Some we know, and some we’ve researched.”

The exhibit opened on Canada Day and continues for a few months, but Chris says the quest to find new buildings may never end. He hopes new information will be obtained from

“people who come and visit and think their house or building is a Lille house, or know of somebody.”

Museum board members and staff came up with the exhibit idea, and summer staff have been crucial in putting it together. The high school and university students who “did a lot of the leg work” are Natasha Costello, Alicen Montalbetti and Elise Pundyk.

“It’s challenging, very much so,” Chris says.

“There’s a lot of talk about Lille, and we’re trying to put it all together in a concise format.”

While the history of Lille is fairly well documented, finding the buildings is hard.

A building can be proven to be from Lille in different ways. There may be newspaper stories about the move, word-of-mouth accounts or, rarely, government papers.

Sometimes, you can tell a building is from Lille just by looking at it. “The architecture, the physical building, can tell the story,” Chris says. “You can see that it’s pretty close to a Lille building.”

Alicen says it was plenty of hard work, but very interesting. “We had to go through various newspaper archives and history books,” she

says. “With the recycling bit, we had to contact individuals whose homes had been once part of Lille.”

By mid-July, they had found five definite Lille buildings, Chris says. These include the Gushul Studio in Blairmore, used for photography, and a row of houses on the east side of Bellevue.

The backstory of the people of Lille is told in part by artifacts, such as glass bottles lent to the museum by Bernie Jensen, who helped research the buildings. The Royal Alberta Museum in Edmonton dug up things like shoes, dolls and sardine cans in a dump site, and is lending them to the Crowsnest Museum.

Trash yesterday can be treasure today.

Chris hopes people will be inspired to visit the actual ghost town, and that Lille Recycled will lead to more Crowsnest Museum projects about Lille.

A major celebration for the exhibit will be held in the late fall, after which many of the artifacts will go back to the owners, other museums, or Crowsnest Museum’s storage.

Until then, you should have plenty of chances to see Lille’s relics for yourself.

Your chance to play in Hillcrest Thursday

By Brad Quarin Klay Pagnucco is trying to keep a tradition of slo-pitch softball alive in Crowsnest Pass.

To that end, he’s inviting people to come down to the Hillcrest ballfields every second Thursday evening for drop-in games.

“It’s just to enjoy summer weather,” he says.

“It’s just a night out.”

The games are focused more on fun than competition, and are open to any skill level. Many participants who come out have experience, but there are some beginners, Klay says.

The games are also “coed.” In the past they’ve preferred that players be at least 18 because alcohol was present, but with parental supervision they’ve made exceptions.

While the first two attempts at drop-in slopitch didn’t work out this year, they’re inviting people down for two more games, on Aug. 8 and 22.

Klay feels they have great – but underused – ballfields to work with. The fields, located near the cemetery, are found by taking a right turn at the sign at the fork in the road going into Hillcrest. They are only four or five years old, and well maintained, he says.

The high school team uses the fields, but not after June, he says. There was also a Rum Runner Days tournament there this year, but it’s not as big

Klay Pagnucco hopes to see some players out for a game of slo-pitch tomorrow evening. as it used to be.

Klay says there was a local slo-pitch league until two years ago. If slo-pitch dies in the Pass, it will take time to resurrect. “That’s why we’re having these fun nights, to try and get people out,” he says.

Personally, Klay has been playing softball for 10 years. He first tried it when filling in for someone else, and later put together a team with his co-workers at Sobeys.

Parks Canada and astronomy volunteers are pleased to present the opportunity to watch this year’s Perseids meteor shower in Waterton Lakes National Park. They will be set up at the Maskinonge picnic area this Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 to 11 p.m., and hope to see up to 60 meteors in an hour at the shower’s peak. The meteors appear in all points of the sky and are typically fast and bright.

These stargazing opportunities will follow the evening theatre programs at Crandell Theatre and Falls Theatre. Please bring a blanket or chair, warm clothes and binoculars or a spotting scope to fully enjoy the night sky.

Waterton Lakes National Park and Glacier National Park in the United States already share a boundary and three joint international designations: international peace park (the world’s first), biosphere reserve and world heritage site.

Now, the two parks are working on a fourth designation: international dark sky park/preserve.

This joint effort recognizes the very dark skies found at the two parks and makes a commitment to protecting and preserving these high-quality conditions.

Study of a hummingbird nest If you watched a female hummingbird carefully a few weeks ago, you might have noticed she was flying a similar path through the yard, time after time. If you looked closer, you might have seen that she carried something very small in her beak each trip. If you paid even more attention over a few days, a pattern may have emerged as to her activities and purpose.

Nesting season is here. A few weeks ago, a rufous hummingbird was building her nest in a tall cottonwood in our yard. We watched through the spotting scope and learned a lot about hummingbird nest building.

It seems the female hummingbird does the work of nest building, as the male was not in evidence during these activities. The female rufous in our yard didn’t start work on her nest until later in the morning, around 10:30 a.m. We speculate that perhaps it’s easier for her to work in the heat of the day. Probably she would spend the morning eating and refuelling her energy reserves.

The nest itself is hard to see, unless you know what to look for. She chose a spot at the junction of two small branches in the canopy of a balsam poplar tree. Rather than depend on the fork of the branches to lay the nest in, she started construction slightly up from the fork. From a distance, the nest looks to the naked eye like a tiny, upside-down wasp nest.

Through the spotting scope or binoculars, the construct is very different and intricate.

The primary building material of the hummingbird nest seems to be cotton from the cottonwood trees. This, I think, would be a wonderful medium for welcoming a newborn into the world. But the hummingbird does not have a way to spin the cotton into fibre, as humans do. Instead, she weaves it into place with her beak, using a single thread from a spider’s web to hold the weave intact.

This was amazing to watch! She would use her feet to pat down the cotton, then reach out to a nearby spider web to pluck a thread. Her beak became like a sewing needle and she placed the spider string around the perimeter of the nest, also patting it into place. When she was satisfied with her progress, she would pause for a moment, then leave, to return a short time later with more building material.

The nest itself would be very visible to predators, since the cotton is white in colour. However, that smart little bird delicately picked lichen from tree trunks and painstakingly placed it on the outside of the nest, using the sticky spider threads to adhere it. The result was a fabulous camouflage.

After a while, hummingbird activity seemed to cease in our yard. We thought perhaps she had built a second nest and chosen it instead, as hummingbirds sometimes do. Then we thought perhaps all the birds had Continued on page 8

Greetings from Crestview Lodge By the residents of Crestview Lodge - Pincher Creek

Canada Day started July off with some fun and laughter for Crestview Lodge residents.

We played games and had a wonderful snack of Jell-O cake, made by our night shift gals.

On July 5 we had a mini spa day. Charmaine, our activity co-ordinator, pampered us with homemade manicure scrubs for our hands and feet. She also brought some aromatherapy oils to add to our scrubs. They smelled wonderful and made our hands feel so soft.

Our coffee outing on July 11 was a hop, skip and jump away – right next door at the golf course clubhouse. The staff there really put themselves out for us, even finding us some ice cream on a hot day. Thank you to the staff, they made us feel very welcome and comfortable.

Our pub night at Crestview was kickup-your-heels fun! Bob Davis and Ed Gross entertained us with lively, toe-tapping music.

Some of the residents danced and sang to all the great songs.

On July 24 we joined a group from Vista Village at the Bruder Campground, near Twin Butte, for mouth-watering salads, baked goodies, watermelon and, of course, hotdogs cooked over

an open fire. Now that was a great lunch with fabulous friends! Thanks to the Bruder family for hosting, and joining us in our fun.

Other families were camping there and we got to share many giggles over the small children playing and some friendly dogs to pet. It was wonderful to watch the antics of a small child, while a puppy ate his goodies and then tried to lick the child’s face clean. What a memorable time; better yet, we made it home before the rainstorm hit!

During Farley Wuth’s visit to Crestview for Historical Hour, he donated a board game based on rural school experiences. The game is called Unfolding the Pages. We are intrigued and can’t wait to try it out. Thank you, Farley.

Last, but not least, we celebrated the birthdays of Audrey B., Joe M., and Irene C. Entertaining at our monthly birthday party was a band called Play’n Country. Their music made our toes tap and our faces light up with a smile.

We had another great night of dancing and singing, and a wonderful visit with the band after their performance.

Throughout the chick-rearing process, the female will aggressively keep the male away from the nest, since his bright colouring may attract predators. Currently, a male rufous hummingbird is camped out by one of the feeders for several hours per day. We think he is guarding his food source, as no other hummingbirds have been coming to that feeder. It seems that each adult is trying to ensure the perpetuity of the species in its own way: the female by aggressively guarding the offspring, the male by securing his food source.

Food is not in shortage in our yard. We have several feeders that the mother can select from to feed her chicks. I can’t wait to see them fly!

A recent climb up into the loft of the barn to peak through the window revealed no eggs in the nest, but two chicks.

Now activity at the hummingbird feeders has resumed with a frenzy. From what I understand, the mother hummingbird will drink nectar and catch bugs, then feed the chicks a regurgitated slurry of these two ingredients every 20 minutes.

I have always had an inquiring mind where the written word is concerned. It is intriguing to me how the English language has developed to become the easy way to communicate it is today.

First, mankind found the need to communicate, then came the invention to fill the need. From drawings etched on cave walls, to the Internet, mankind has invented new ways to correspond.

Just as we communicated through stories passed down verbally, then through pictures etched in the dirt, we developed a uniformly written and understood language that we have become familiar with.

For centuries, we could read the works of Shakespeare and understand what he meant. I thought I could relax because the written word had settled into the format easily understood by the majority for hundreds of years. That was until I received an email I couldn’t read.

Actually I did, but it took 20 minutes to decipher. With the onslaught of new technology, the written word seems to be undergoing a change yet again.

Texting and tweeting are new formats that use the least possible amount of letters to spell.

One example was an email I received that used “ud” repeatedly. I finally deciphered the note and found that ud was actually the shortened version for you’d. The sender thought I would know what word it represented. Alas, I did not, as others words were also shortened, making the whole note unreadable at first glance. It took about 10 minutes to decipher the message. I ended up asking for a decoder ring or a legend for the next note, for sanity’s sake. I’m happy to say that ud still comes up as misspelled in the computer’s spellchecker, but for how long?

I do fear that my generation may be the last to spell words in their original version, those same words that are easily recognized and whose definitions are instantly known. It is this understanding that allows us to read the paper or a computer screen.

Of course, my generation may still be needed to transcribe the accepted written word of today into the micro written word that is developing. Ah, who am I kidding? They will probably use computers!

Still, it would be interesting to see how they would transcribe the works of Shakespeare to the micro words used today, without losing their meaning and flowery speech. Personally, I cannot quite picture “To be, or not to be, that is the question” written in the newer, shorter version of “2 b, or no b, tat is the ?” Or, “Rmeo, x2 wre is u?”

Somehow, I don’t think we would still be reading those words – if originally written in the newer version – some 400 years later.

I would like to give a shout-out to three-yearold Anthony, who has Shootin’ the Breeze read to him each week!

Summer fun on the rivers

By Brad Quarin Oldman River, Crowsnest River and finally Castle River were among the waters tackled by young kayakers looking to grow in their sport at a summer kayak camp.

A weeklong kayak camp wrapped up July 26, and the kids involved enjoyed the experience.

“I love it, it’s so much fun,” says Gemma Grochmal. She came all the way from Calgary for the camp.

Gemma, who has been kayaking for a year, particularly liked the Oldman River and calls it “a new favourite.” She says she learned much in the camp, including the eddy turn – taking on an eddy in the kayak with the right tilt.

Her favourite moment was rolling her boat on the rapids. “You need to try and get your boat back up when it’s flipped over,” she says.

One boy in the camp, Bremner Churchill, lives in Toronto and joined the kayak camp while visiting his grandparents

in Frank.

He’s kayaked before, but doing it on rapids and rivers is a fairly new and different experience for him. “You get to go off these really fun drops and go through rapids,” he says. “It’s awesome.”

Bremner says he’s getting the hang of kayaking. He started a few months ago and had never been to a kayak camp before.

The “really cool” part for Bremner came on Thursday. While going through rapids, he stayed upright while the two kayakers in front of him flipped. “It was pretty fun,” he says, and he can see doing more kayaking in the future.

Local boy Gareth Kaack was the third participant on the final day. The kids were instructed by Samuel Wey from France, and Gemma was happy with his teaching style.

“He demonstrates what you need to do, he doesn’t just explain it,” she says.

Chuck Lee, who started the Pinch o’ Crow Creekers kayak club, also came out that day.
