My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin Music and memories are elements often intertwined.

Each of us has a personal playlist of songs that connect us with life events. These musical favourites trigger emotions and memories that take us to moments in time with special meaning.

Most often, songs take me to a happy memory, but on occasion the trip back in time is to a sad or scary place. For me, memories evoked by music are vivid and clear.

Music has been an important part of my life as far back as I can remember. I can’t recall a time when I wasn’t singing along to the radio and enjoying a wide variety of genres.

In the past two weeks I’ve had the opportunity to enjoy an abundance of live music and to form many new musical memories.

At the Halo High Water fundraising concert a dozen acts raised their voices in support of flood relief in Alberta.

Listening to host Tom Jackson speak took me back to a special day when my daughter caught his eye in the crowd and had a little one-on-one chat with her, perched on his knee.

Susan Aglukark’s “O Siem” is a song I’ve always liked, but had no specific connection with.

“O Siem, we are all family, O Siem, we’re all the same,” took on new meaning as I sat between a dear friend and a stranger – both heavily impacted High River and Calgary flood victims – who had tears streaming down their faces.

The sense of strength in the room as people held hands and sang along was incredible, and I’m proud to share that wonderful memory with 3,000 people.

I was moved to tears several times during the show, but it was Paul Brandt who turned the faucets wide open with his rendition of “It Is Well With My Soul.”

Paul brought the theatre to complete silence as he sang with accompaniment from the Alberta Youth Choir. The lyrics speak of eternal hope while overcoming grief and devastation, and

spoke clearly to each person in the house.

The memory of people reaching out to comfort friends and strangers is a powerful one I will keep forever. It exemplifies the best side of humanity that has shone through the flooding aftermath and given us all hope.

The Alberta Flood Aid concert held last week gave us the chance to enjoy a dozen rock ’n’ roll performances.

Loverboy and Tom Cochrane took me on a memory lane trip through my late teens and early 20s. I had most of the songs on LPs and have to say I preferred those days, when Tom and Mike Reno could still hit the high notes in their best songs, and I’ll let my memories rest there.

Jann Arden reminded me of times of personal insecurity when her smooth voice consoled me or asked the same questions I was seeking answers to. She’s still got it.

But the one who still rocks the best is Randy Bachman. “Taking Care of Business” brought more than 30,000 people to their feet singing, dancing and clapping in the five-minute highlight of the show.

From that night forward, the first few bars of BTO’s famous song will remind me of the strength of Albertans coming together for their neighbours, tens of thousands strong. Together, we are all taking care of business.

As well as seeing many well-known artists perform, I also had a chance to take in a show

by Pincher Creek rocker Alex Shenton and his Saskatoon band, Bastard Poetry.

Alex is just getting his feet wet in the music business and hopes to make a strong impact with his first album. If you caught one of the band’s shows in the area last week, you’ll already have a few of Alex’s songs making their way to the playlist in your mind and memory.

Music, words and memory together create a fascinating combination.

I hope a favourite melody and happy association have come to mind as you’ve read this week’s Little Corner.

Greetings from Crestview By the residents of Crestview Lodge Pincher Creek

Wow, we have participated in a lot of activities since the first of August! We started off the month by taking a trip to Windsor Centre in Lundbreck. The drive out was pleasant, and then we played horse races with the members there that day. As usual, some of our horses were fast that day and some were not!

On Friday we got out our new game donated by Farley Wuth, Schoolhouse Trivia.

Charmaine quizzed us on our knowledge about the schoolhouses. It was very enjoyable. We learned a lot about the schoolhouses that were in the Pincher Creek district and we were able to add some stories, as some of us attended these schools; it was really quite interesting.

On Aug. 7 we went on an enjoyable drive to Waterton Lakes National Park. We got to see the countryside and how lush it is right now.

We watched the ranchers cut down their hay and saw all the bales that are out in the fields.

While watching them work, we thought about how it used to be!

When we arrived in Waterton, my word, it was busy! There were a lot of people in Waterton that particular day; the park was abustle with them. We had plans to attend the Waterton Opera House along with residents of Vista Village. We had a wonderful afternoon visiting with our friends, eating lunch and listening to the music performed by Josh Cockerill. Josh is a young fellow who composes and performs his own music.

On Aug. 12 was Historical Hour with Farley. He brought some Beaver Books from the museum for us to look at, as well as an old map of Pincher Creek. We are purchasing one of Farley’s books, Prairie Grass to Mountain Pass, to place in our library here at Crestview Lodge.

We have started our own little choir for those of us that like to sing, and have held our first practice. I think it will be very enjoyable.

Maybe we will get good enough to perform for you someday!

The Mennonite singers have been coming to entertain us for several years now. They have such lovely voices and we always enjoy the evenings they come.

Isn’t that Taber corn good? We have really been enjoying it – we’ve had corn at three of our meals so far and look forward to more.

Thank you to our kitchen staff for adjusting their menus and cooking us Taber corn while it is fresh.

We have three birthday celebrants this month. A very Happy Birthday to John S., Marie S., and Kay H. May you stay healthy and celebrate many more.

Mollie prepares for marathon challenge

By Brad Quarin Adventure is in store for five young people from around the globe journeying into the Peruvian Amazon this November. One of those five hails from Crowsnest Pass.

Mollie Paton, a young lady of high energy and cheer, was selected as a youth ambassador

by Impossible 2 Possible, an organization aiming to inspire and empower youth.

“I’m so happy, so excited!” she says.

A recent graduate of Crowsnest Consolidated High School, Mollie has also run in Sinister 7, the yearly ultramarathon held in the Pass.

She first heard of Impossible 2 Possible from her coach, Ryan Peebles, and running friend Anna Koevoet.

The program slipped Mollie’s mind until she stumbled onto it again on the Internet. “It was really kind of haphazard,” she says. “It came out of the blue.”

Impossible 2 Possible organizes expeditions for young people, 17 to 21, who then share what they’ve learned, through videoconferencing, with students around the world.

“They’re an education program, first and foremost,” Mollie says. “They really believe in experiential learning.”

She applied for an expedition to Utah in May, which was mainly concerned with paleontology, but wasn’t accepted.

Now, however, school’s done and the Sinister 7 experience has taught her what it’s like to run long distances. “I wasn’t quite sure if I was prepared for this when I signed up, but I totally am now,” she says.

For her online application to Youth Expedition Peru, Mollie had to answer questions about why she wanted to take on the journey and about her training. She was able to talk about her experience in Sinister 7 and her desire to continue working with students.

Ottawa. Two come from the United States and one from Australia, so it’s pretty special to make the cut.

After taking some academic modules starting in September, the youth ambassadors will go to Peru in November for three weeks.

Each day in Peru they will run through areas of the country and learn about those places, with a focus on biodiversity in the Amazon.

Every day, after running, the youth ambassadors will talk to 15,000 students around the world through videoconferencing.

“It’s not going to be quite like anything you’d see if you were touring there,” Mollie says. They’ll start on a trail in the Andes and run down along the Amazon River, covering 42 kilometres every day for seven days. The route will go through a number of native villages.

The youth ambassadors’ costs are covered by sponsors, including Simon Fraser University, Gatorade and Apple.

Experience music through community choir

By Brad Quarin Ladies, if you’re 16 or over and love to sing, the Crowsnest Community Choir wants you.

The choir is going into a new year, with its first session planned for Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at Isabelle Sellon School in Blairmore.

According to the choir’s vice president, Monica Primrose, women can gain a lot from the weekly meetings. “You foster your appreciation of music, you get to sing,” she says. She considers singing therapeutic, and the choir also offers companionship with people with the same interests, and a chance for music education.

“You get to experience different types of music,” she says.

Women who join also become part of a Crowsnest Pass tradition. The Crowsnest Community Choir has roots in the Ecumenical Choir, started in the 1980s to sing religious songs, Monica recounts. Her mom was a member of the Ecumenical Choir, and Monica has been a member of the choir for 23 years, joining after the group began embracing other kinds of music.

Monica loves to sing and likes the variety the choir offers now. There are still some religious-themed songs, which she considers beautiful, with “some of the most lovely harmonies,” but there are also folk, classical and comedic songs. They’ve even borrowed from the repertoire of ABBA and Sister Act. Now and then, the choir has learned to sing in other languages, correct pronunciations and all, Monica says. Songs have been in Latin, German and Italian.

No auditions are required to join the choir, with Monica saying auditions can scare people away. Some women will learn how to sing in what she calls “a teaching choir.” After a couple of sessions, the choir will figure out where to put a singer, who might be skilled at something different than she thought.

The choir is looking for at least 30 members, to produce a decent volume. Last year they had 27. They’ve tried to include men in the past, but couldn’t find enough to justify purchasing songs that could be performed with men’s voices.

They need members to arrive on time every week to master “the balance of sound.” With that kind of commitment and a desire to learn, choir members have a great deal of fun, Monica says.

The choir has a new director, Deb (The Deb) Goldstein, and a new pianist, Tammy Giesbrecht. Besides looking for members, Deb and the committee are preparing for the fall by choosing music to perform.

After the first weekly sessions, the choir will have its first big performance for Remembrance Day. It’s Deb’s call as to whether they perform before then, during Alberta Culture Days in September, but the choir usually doesn’t have time to prepare for that, Monica says.

“We feel that we are filling a spot in the community,” she says. Their service to Crowsnest Pass includes participation in Remembrance Day services and Blue Christmas at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel, providing comfort for the bereaved.

Monica feels the choir had a great year last year, with a good turnout in singers and audiences and a spring concert that went without a hitch.

This year, her goals are just to find 30 people, sing on key and have fun. With luck, the choir might get involved again in the music festival in March.

The cost to join the choir is $50 per year.

Take in the family fun at Cornfest this weekend

By Brad Quarin Cornfest, Lundbreck’s annual day of fun, will be even more special this year.

In 2007, the community marked its centennial with a parade during Cornfest. This Saturday, Lundbreck is bringing back the parade for the first time since 2007 and will also have its first Cornfest show and shine.

Everyone is excited for Saturday, says George Dowson of the Lundbreck Citizens Council.

“To put on something like this is good for the community.”

The day is designed to have something for both kids and adults.

George has played an organizational role in Cornfest since 2004, but it’s older than that. “It goes back quite a while,” he says.

The organizers figured they could put on another parade this year, with Kimberly Hurst assembling a parade committee.

Despite Lundbreck’s small size, George says it’s not too hard putting the parade together,

since they’ve been planning it since January.

There are about 40 entries in the parade, including a pipe band and business floats, and people from other communities like Sparwood are participating. The parade will be at 11 a.m.

The vehicle show and shine takes place near Livingstone School from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Organizers asked Mike Bates to start a show and shine for Cornfest, since he’s been involved in them before.

Of course, the regular hallmarks of Cornfest will be observed on Saturday, including the pancake breakfast starting at 8 a.m. A donation at the door gets you pancakes cooked by MD councillors.

People can play horseshoes whenever they like, and the baseball tournament at Patton Park starts Friday night and resumes at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Five or six teams will be playing, with some from Calgary, Lethbridge and Pincher Creek, so the tournament has definitely grown since it started between Lundbreck and Cowley.

The pig roast was a hit last year, so that’s coming back too, with the Lundbreck Citizens Council hosting it at the community hall at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per person, and each guest should bring a salad or dessert. Taber corn will also be served. Tickets for 150 people will be sold at the door.

Cornfest wraps up with a party at the Lundbreck Hotel, with a band, dancing and drinks at night.

Tickets for a 50-50 raffle are also for sale, and if all 3,000 tickets are sold the winner will score $1,500. Last year they came close, with the winner walking away with $1,400. Proceeds support the community hall, which recently had a sidewalk and wheelchair ramp added.

“Everybody’s welcome to come,” George says, including people from neighbouring communities. In 2007 the pancake breakfast received 500 people, more than the population of Lundbreck. With the parade, this should be another good year.

If you crave chocolate you may need magnesium

By Sarah-Dash Arbuckle The Health Hub Do you crave chocolate? You may be magnesium deficient. The recommended daily allowance is 300 to 450 milligrams per day, while the average person gets 120 to 250.

We lose magnesium by supplementing with just calcium, consuming soda pop (high phosphorus), refined carbohydrates and sugar. Using the birth control pill, diuretics, alcohol and caffeine can also reduce levels.

Known as the anti-stress mineral, magnesium is a natural tranquilizer, relaxing skeletal muscles, blood vessels and the intestinal tract.

It can help with constipation, fatigue, insomnia, muscle cramps, anxiety, PMS, headaches, cardiac conditions, alcoholism, kidney stones,

osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, autism, ADHD, asthma and more.

Food sources are dark, leafy greens and seafood, most nuts and seeds (almonds, cashews, pecans and brazil nuts), legumes (soy flour and tofu), fruits (avocado and dried apricots) and whole grains (wheat, millet, brown rice). If soils are depleted, the foods from that soil will be also. If boiling foods, you will lose magnesium in the water you drain off.

Try supplementing with magnesium citrate or bis-glycinate for best absorption. It is best on an empty stomach, as high stomach acid is required for absorption. Magnesium is an osmotic laxative (brings water into the bowel), and if you get loose stools just decrease your dosage.

Some complementary therapies are called “energetic healing,” such as acupuncture, reflexology, shiatsu massage, healing touch and reiki. Energetic healing is based on the idea that all living things have energy flowing through them, called life force energy. Put healthy lunches on the menu

By Sheryl Baker Monster Fitness It’s hard to believe, but it’s almost time for the kids to go back to school. And, on top of all the things you need to do to get them ready, you need to think about what you will send with them for snacks and lunch.

Monster Fitness would like to provide you with a few strategies to create a healthy, whole-food lunch that doesn’t break the budget.

1. Carve out time every week to wash and cut fresh veggies and divide them into individual zip lock bags so they are readily available.

2. Replace sugary, processed snacks with an extra piece of fruit or a homemade (peanut-free) treat.

3. Send water bottles instead of juice boxes.

4. Use whole-wheat wraps or lettuce leaves to replace boring old sandwiches.

5. Precook lean meats at the beginning of the week, then slice them into small seal-tight containers. This works great if you have a picky eater who doesn’t want meat mixed with other food groups, and it’s very easy to create a wrap or sandwich with the precooked meat.

Though these tips take a bit of planning and prep, they will save you time and money, and keep your children healthy, happy and more able to focus in school.

Vacationing for a cause

By Brad Quarin Everybody needs a vacation, and the Pincher Creek Health Centre needs $200,000 worth of upgrades to its triage area. Fortunately, the Windy Slopes Health Foundation has found a way to help fill both needs.

The Vacation a Month raffle heads into its third year in September, giving Albertans a chance to score a vacation for a bargain. It has been a very successful fundraiser in its first two years.

“Your chances of winning are a lot better than the lottery,” Donna Schauerte of Windy Slopes says with a chuckle.

A ticket for $100 enters you into a raffle, with monthly draws sending the lucky winner to destinations like Palm Springs, Cuba or Chateau Lake Louise in Banff.

You can now get three tickets for $200, an even bigger bargain, she says. As well, this is the first time they’re sending a winner outside the Americas, with a draw for a trip to London in April. “We’ve just been tweaking it, and improving it year by year.”

Each month, there’s a second-place prize of $100, with your name returned to the barrel to possibly be drawn again.

The value of these trips ranges from $900 to $2,500, but Vacation a Month is a great fundraiser for Windy Slopes – the previous two each netted $20,000. This year, if all tickets are sold, it will bring in $25,000, Donna says.

If $100 seems a little costly for a ticket, keep in mind it not only gives you a shot at a more valuable vacation package, but also supports a good cause. “We have a state-of-the art health-care facility in little Pincher Creek, and the dollars are staying in our community,” she says. “And I take pride in saying that Windy Slopes has been a major contributor.”

Moreover, if you win a trip to a place you don’t want to go to, you can take a travel voucher to go somewhere else.

The first draw this year is on Sept. 4, for a three-night stay in Halifax worth $2,500.

In the past, a number of locals have won a vacation package. “I did a majority of the draws for the winners last year, and anybody who won a trip was just thrilled,” Donna says. The money raised by the previous raffles went to buying a portable ultrasound machine and new lighting for the maternity suite. These are the kinds of things not covered by Alberta Health Services.

Windy Slopes also spreads word of the raffle to Alberta Health Services workers across the province, so some winners have come from outside Pincher Creek and have become “repeat purchasers.”

Windy Slopes itself goes back at least 15 years, and Donna’s mom, Ruth Schauerte, was a founding member. Donna joined three years ago and became chairperson a year ago. “It’s very rewarding to see your volunteer work amount to something,” she says. “The whole community is getting the benefit.”

Tickets are for sale at ATB Financial, RBC and the health centre, and will remain available after the first September draw.

Walter Foster’s legacy on display at Waterton

By Brad Quarin An exhibit showcasing an important piece of Waterton history has been popular and may go on longer than planned, says Anne McClelland of the Waterton Natural History Association.

The exhibit on Walter Foster, a builder and stonemason from the early days of Waterton Lakes National Park, remains up at the Waterton Heritage Centre, likely until Sept. 10.

“He was a real ambassador for the park, an outdoorsman,” says Edwin Knox, who’s concerned with cultural resource management at the park.

Foster lived in the park from the 1920s to the 1960s and built a number of cabins still standing there.

The display was made possible by donations of photographs from Foster’s family, including his daughter Gladys Charman and granddaughter Diana Ferrill. “It’s wonderful fodder for recognition of a man who contributed a lot to the park,” Edwin says.

There are also some artifacts, including a broad axe and building plans. For Edwin, the most interesting item is Foster’s diary, chronicling the construction of Sun Dance Lodge in 1927, and he’s read the whole book.

Edwin scanned the pictures and set up the display while Chris Morrison did much of the research and writing. Anne also made contributions to the exhibit.

Walter Foster may not be a household name, but Edwin says people who visit Waterton are naturally curious as to who made the park what it is. Visitors taking a self-guided walking tour of Waterton will see seven of Foster’s cabins, and the exhibit will tell them who made them. The cabins are now privately owned.

While Edwin most appreciates Foster’s contributions in construction, he notes Foster, a veteran of the First World War, also wrote the mandate of the Rocky Mountains Club. That mandate was an influence in the union of Waterton and Glacier National Park in Montana, forming Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. “He was the forerunner to the peace park in many ways,” Edwin says.

Edwin says he is “very happy” with how the exhibit turned out, given a unique subject and a perfect venue.

Also thrilled is Foster’s family, whose heritage is being shared. “It is an honour to have our great-grandfather featured,” their thank-you card reads. “What a wonderful day.”

Edwin points out that other historical figures shaped Waterton Lakes National Park along with Foster. Anne suggests more families donating items related to Waterton could lead to more exhibits.

July 30, 1943 to Aug. 10, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Robert Williams of Blairmore, Alta., who valiantly battled cancer but peacefully passed away on Aug. 10, 2013, while receiving care and compassion at Crowsnest Pass Health Care Centre in Blairmore. He was 70 years of age.

Bob was born in Blairmore on July 30, 1943, to Lloyd and Ann Williams. He was raised to appreciate the love of family and this community. His playground was the mountainside: its rivers, creeks, lakes and valleys. He learned to hike, hunt, trap and fish while marvelling at the quiet majesty of it all.

Bob grew to be a dashing young man with a reserved and respectful demeanour. He fell in love with a lovely and graceful young lady, Betty Liska, and they pledged their love in marriage on April 24, 1965. They were blessed with children and later with grandchildren. Bob cherished his family above all else and provided for them to his utmost. He was employed at Phillips Cables as a foreman, and later at the local hospitals managing materials and supplies.

He always found time for fun and spent quality time with his family and in the great outdoors. He had many talents and loved to make frames from old barn wood, impart wisdom with tales from “the good old days,” and would often help those who needed a hand. His sense of humour and dry wit were hilarious and he loved to make us laugh.

He was a member of the Hillcrest Fish and Game Club, the Willow Valley Trophy Club, the Boone and Crockett Club, the Crowsnest Mountain Gun Club and Range, and the Blairmore Curling Club, to name but a few. He had a passion for woodcutting and especially for chuckwagon racing. His life was full, with challenges and struggles, laughter and love; he touched our hearts and will be fondly remembered and dearly missed.

“Every man is born but not every man truly lives.”

Left to honour his life are his wife, Betty Williams, of Blairmore; his children, Kevin (Corrine) Williams of Coleman and Pam Williams of Lethbridge; his grandchildren, Dillon Williams, Laken (Benson) McKee and Brooke Williams; his sisters, Fay (Tony) Irving of Pincher Creek and Judy Colwell of Coleman; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Huckleberries and more at Castle this weekend

By Brad Quarin The chairlifts of Castle Mountain Resort will be back in action this Saturday for the only run of the summer. The 18th annual Huckleberry Festival gives enthusiasts the unique opportunity to ride a chairlift up the mountain and pick their way back down.

The family-friendly event offers a golden opportunity see the ski hill from a different perspective while gathering huckleberries and enjoying a wide range of activities open to locals and tourists alike.

Rumour has it this year’s berry crop looks especially sweet, and the festival is a great reason to get out and enjoy the beauty of the Castle area, even if one chooses not to pick fruit.

The festival raises money for the Castle Mountain Community Association, which collaborates with the resort in organizing the event

and hosts a silent auction. Proceeds from the event will go toward a new playground for the community.

On Friday night, the festival kicks off with a campfire outside the T-Bar Pub at 8:30 p.m.

The next morning, you can enjoy pancakes in the day lodge before climbing aboard the chairlift. Breakfast starts at 9 a.m. and costs $8 per person.

Lift tickets are free for those five years and under, and $10 for everyone else. The lift up the mountain makes berry picking much easier, as people make their way down filling their buckets with the tasty fruit.

At the same time, vendors will be selling crafts and a bake sale will be underway in the day lodge. Marie Reed of the resort says this is a way to support local businesses offering wares like pottery and paintings and, of course, a vari-

ety of goodies made from huckleberries.

Silent auction items will be open to bids from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

For the kids, there will be face painting, a bouncy castle and plenty of wide-open space to enjoy.

From noon to 8 p.m., the Huckleberry Stage features live music by Heather Blush and the Uppercuts, the Coal Creek Boys, Jackie Rose, Pat and Heather Case, and Carly Perkin. Most artists have done the festival before, but Marie says the Coal Creek Boys are new to the event.

A pig roast and roast beef dinner, starting at 6 p.m., concludes the day. The meal is $18 for adults and $10 for ages 12 and under.

Whether you come for the berries, the music or simply to enjoy the scenery, you’re sure to have a great time at Castle Mountain this weekend.

Tom Welsch of Pincher Creek takes aim at the Oldman River Gun Club Trap Shoot.

Take a shot with the Oldman River Gun Club A recent trap shoot offered 45 target shooters from southern and central Alberta and British Columbia an opportunity to test their hand-eye co-ordination. The August 10 event was a nonregistered competition hosted by the Oldman River Gun Club.

It’s a win-win situation, with competitors taking home great prizes and the club raising funds at the same time. A donation will be made to a local charity on behalf of the successful event.

The local gun club has 200 members, with league trap shooting Monday evenings and practices on Thursdays.

“We offer many opportunities for groups and individuals to use our range and learn gun and shooting safety, as well as proper shooting techniques,” says president Dan Kuftinoff.

The club has experienced significant growth.

“Tom Welsch is one of several junior shooters who have joined the club in the past few years and he’s a great shooter,” Dan says. “We always like to see young kids getting involved as they kelp to keep the sport going.”

Free targets are offered to junior shooters.

The club will keep going until the snow flies, so there’s lots of shooting left to be done if the weather co-operates.
