My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin The past few weeks have been a time for reflection as I’ve looked back on two years of publishing Shootin’ the Breeze. Next week’s issue will be the first in our third year – it’s amazing how time flies when you love what you do!

Last Saturday I participated in the Corner Mountain Climb for Huntington Disease. The whole of that day, from the challenges to the exhilaration, helped tie together many things I’ve been reflecting on.

Every story I tell and each new adventure becomes part of who I am. I’m fortunate to meet the most amazing people on this journey with the Breeze, and each leaves a lasting impression.

Cas Freeman and her caregivers (Team Cas) are a prime example of determination and spirit.

This was exemplified as about 200 people gathered to trek to the mountain summit. It was an amazing atmosphere of love and hope which had an impact on everyone who took part, I’m sure.

The view of our destination was intimidating – the ascent was about 700 metres. But apprehension gave way to curiosity about what it would feel like to stand at the top.

I’ve never been the athletic sort, and two years of too many hours a day behind a desk have contributed to me being in the worst shape of my life. But I’ve never been afraid of a challenge, and climbing a mountain seemed like a perfect thing to tackle. In the end, the blazing sun turned out to be more difficult for me than the climb itself.

As I walked, I compared the challenge of the trek to the trepidation of starting a new business. I knew each would be tough, but I am determined.

My husband calls it stubbornness. Whatever it is, this drive carries me forward. The heat challenged me on the mountain, just as bumps big and small have appeared on the road in the past two years.

Then and now I plug on, one step at a time.

With pleasure, I walked with several different people up the slope. Some I knew, while others were strangers. I took good karma away from each of them, and also enjoyed the time I walked alone.

I had waited for Cas to leave, so started out near the end of the pack. I dawdled along the way, taking pictures of the amazing views and stop-

ping to catch my breath. I was distressed when I realized that by getting so far behind the horses, I would miss Cas’s arrival at the top.

It’s the same feeling I get when I wish I could be many places at once and realize I can’t do it all.

I was grateful when Janet Main gave me a short lift in an effort to get a photo of Cas arriving, even though I didn’t get there quite in time.

Choosing to accept a hand up isn’t an easy thing for me in any aspect of life, but I’m learning to accept with grace and gratitude when it’s offered.

At that point I could have stopped, and part of me wanted nothing more than to sit and rest.

It wasn’t the mountain peak, but it was as far as some would go. Although it was a steep climb ahead, I knew I would regret not reaching the top.

I walked this last stretch with Pat Moskaluk, who was no stranger to Corner Mountain. She made the steep climb seem easy, and others offered us kind words of encouragement as they made their way down from the peak.

I’ve been fortunate to have strong support behind me in the Breeze endeavour as well. It comes from my family, my staff and our loyal readers. This sustains the journey I’ve chosen on days when things are difficult.

I’m so glad I pushed through to the top – the view was amazing, as was the adrenaline rush!

Pat pulled out her cellphone. “I’m at the top of a mountain,” she said, and I could tell this was no surprise to her daughter at the other end.

I’m proud of myself and of everyone who took the challenge and came together for the Freeman family and for Huntington’s. It was truly a day of jubilation on many levels.

The Breeze is all about celebrating positive people and sharing stories from our corner of the province. There are views as glorious as what you see from a mountaintop along with pride and inspiration as strong as what I felt Saturday afternoon, among the stories we tell every week.

Cas didn’t choose to take the Huntington’s journey, but she moves forward each day and offers lessons to those around her. The obstacles I face on my chosen journey pale in comparison.

Let’s get guiding Public registration sessions for Girl Guides are happening this month at various locations in southern Alberta. You can also register anytime (year-round) at www.girlguides.ca if you are unable to make it to a local registration event.

Financial assistance is available through your local Girl Guides office, and registration fees are also eligible for the federal government’s Children’s Arts Tax Credit.

Girl Guides is the leadership organization for girls and women in Canada, with more than 90,000 members across the country. Girls are invited to join and be a part of Sparks, ages five and six; Brownies, seven and eight; Guides, 9 to 11; Pathfinders, 12 to 14; and Rangers, 15 to 17+.

Adult women are welcome as leaders, mentors, team members and more.

A dream for improved mobility

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek service clubs are being called together to determine how to obtain a wheelchair-accessible van currently up for sale.

Charleen Bruder of Good Samaritans and a multiple sclerosis patient she works with, Tina Webber, have a dream for that van to improve the mobility of the disabled in Pincher Creek.

“There’s a lot of people in the community that are in wheelchairs and can’t get to anywhere,” Charleen says. The van would add to services provided now by the local Handi-Bus. Tina, who lives in Vista Village, is one person who could benefit.

Limited transportation options have prevented her from going to things ranging from medical appointments in Calgary to special events where she had been asked to speak. That’s frustrating, “in a big way,” she says.

Regular vehicles are challenging to get into, and last year Tina broke a foot trying to board one.

Currently, ambulances are taking the wheelchair-bound to medical appointments. “And that’s a terrible waste,” Tina says.

Charleen, who’s an assisted living worker at Vista Village, didn’t become fully conscious of these limitations on locals in wheelchairs until she befriended Tina. Simple places like restaurants and movie theatres can be hard to enter. “It’s tough to see,” Charleen says.

That’s why hope was raised when word came of a van for sale, with a ramp that lifts wheelchairs, saving drivers from the physical labour. “We really need something like that in the community,” Tina says.

Charleen shared the idea with Dick Waywood of the Pincher Creek Legion, who agrees the van would be terrific to have.

The cost of the vehicle is $40,000, but Dick told Charleen that raising the cash would be the easiest part. The real difficulty, she says, is finding someone to keep the van.

For example, the van could be donated to Good Samaritans, but their insurance would only allow for residents of Vista Village to use it. The van should be available to the whole community.

With Dick’s help, they hope to arrange a meeting of local clubs and organizations this fall to talk about solving this problem.

For Tina, while a community van isn’t yet a certainty, the idea means hope. Tina moved to Vista Village from Crowsnest Pass and has lived there for four years. She has little desire to move to Calgary for better accessibility.

There’s something for everyone at Pincher Creek Trade Show

By Brad Quarin Local businesses have a chance to introduce themselves to the public and sell their products at the Pincher Creek Trade Show on Friday and Saturday.

The event, taking place in the arena, is held by Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber resurrected the trade show last fall after it hadn’t been held in years, says administrator Lieve Parisis. It was a success, and they want to make it bigger this time. “We hope to increase the number of visitors this year, that’s our main goal,” she says.

This year’s show will feature at least 74 booths, up from 64 last year, and at least 60 vendors, many of whom are new. Vendors range from local clubs to photography businesses, and some will come from as far away as Edmonton and Saskatoon.

There will be entertainment in the form of taekwondo demonstrations on Saturday at 1 p.m., courtesy of Dennis Sokownin of Lethbridge, who’s hoping to attract potential learners. Sariah Brasnett’s Monster Fitness gym will also have a few demos, in addition to two booths. A concession will be available as well.

Lieve recommends the trade show for everybody. There will be face painting, glitter tattoos and cotton candy for children, home care equipment for seniors and door prizes and a draw for all. Besides displaying and selling their products, vendors may benefit from making business contacts.

Last year, the vendors who took part were happy with the size of the crowd, and members of the public were pleased with the variety of vendors. They were also happy just to have the trade show back, Lieve says.

Admission is $3 for everyone aged seven and over, and free for younger children. The trade show runs at 867 Main St. from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Reaching a peak of support

By Bev Everts Last Friday was busy and fun, picking flowers for decorating, organizing the Huntington Society of Canada display board, celebrating with Cas Freeman her remarkable 60th birthday, stocking supplies at the hall and connecting with Sally Litchfield of HSC and Team Cas. All in preparation to share a day on Corner Mountain with Cas and those sharing in her journey with Huntington Disease.

Saturday morning dawned with a clear blue southern Alberta sky. Not a breath of wind!

Sally e-mailed saying our online donations had reached $10,620 – unbelievable!

Corner Mountain shone in the morning light as I drove to Cas’s to meet Team Cas member Claire Bonertz. We set up registration on the gravel road leading up Pincher Creek Canyon.

Trotting down the road came our first participant, Joyce Taylor, on her faithful horse, Skippy. Then Jim Green strolled up sporting his trademark walking stick, followed by dogs and horses and friends and neighbours and strangers (who read Shannon’s Shootin’ the Breeze article last week).

Total mayhem ensued for the next two hours.

Building from the online registrations, we reached over $18,600 or so and I figured we were about 200 strong to the top of Corner Mountain.

friends and finally with Shannon, we reached the first plateau. Here we were greeted with the sight of Cas on Trooper and my grandchildren Brynn and Carter running down the trail – “Nana is here!” The magic of that moment will live in my heart forever.

After much unwanted discussion from me, Cas finally agreed to dismount into her brother Mac’s waiting arms. Food and laughter and panoramic views were shared as we perched amid

Everyone arrived from the peak and the group photo was snapped, capturing the spirit of the day.

If there had been any more love and support, I am convinced we all surely would have floated off of Corner Mountain with sheer joy!

Champagne followed and I was whisked up into a crowded car full of kids and singing and laughter, to be gratefully driven down.

(Apparently I was too busy to walk down).

Arriving at the Twin Butte Hall was yet another unforgettable moment. Crowds of neighbours and friends had gathered for food, drink and dancing. We raised another $3,000 or so with the silent auction and bar.

Cas’s daughters, Sarah and Emma, joyfully welcomed everyone and presented awards for youngest to the top (my grandbaby Delainy), oldest to the top (good friend Hilah) and most money raised individually (me). I was overwhelmed yet again.

I managed a comfortable, heartfelt speech about the Huntington Society of Canada and current research. Then we danced!

And now, I want to share my sincere gratitude to you for such generous support. Thank you all.

I am inspired and supported by your generosity, and filled with hope for Cas, her family and all who live with Huntington Disease.

Rodeo in his genes

By Brad Quarin Lundbreck’s Cooper Zur distinguished himself in high school rodeo bull riding this summer, competing at championships in Alberta and Wyoming.

In July, the Grade 11 student faced 28 competitors at the provincial finals in Ponoka, and placed second overall. He says the win felt good and was a little surprising, as all the bull riders were very skilled.

His success at Ponoka qualified him to go to Rock Springs, Wyo., for the National High School Finals Rodeo, featuring entrants from Canada, the United States and Australia. This was his first trip to Rock Springs.

Although he was bucked off the bull on both rides, he wasn’t hurt.

Cooper enjoyed meeting new people at dances and other activities for the rodeo contestants.

Later in July, Cooper competed in the Canadian High School Rodeo finals at Nanton.

It was his first time to the Canadian finals and, though he felt a little nervous, he got off to a great start.

His favourite moment in high school rodeo this year came when he placed first in the first round of bull riding.

Among 20 competitors, he placed second overall in the Canadian finals, which was a great feeling.

Rodeo genes may have been passed on to Cooper – his dad and uncle both rode bulls, too.

He started out riding steers at age 12, learning with the help of a few people, and eventually graduated to bull riding.

He enjoys the adrenaline and the satisfaction of doing well. He also enjoys team roping, but not as much as bull riding, which he feels he is likely better at.

Cooper competed in steer wrestling at many rodeos, including those in Pincher Creek and Kananaskis, before he got involved in high school rodeo.

Cooper would like to go on to college rodeo one day, but doesn’t yet know what he’ll study.

In the meantime, he thanks his dad for taking him to many of the rodeos, his grandpa for the support, and his sponsor, Sam’s Western Outlet in Nanton.

A great summer at Crowsnest Community Library

By Diane deLauw Through the Chinook Arch Regional Library System, local teens had the opportunity to participate in Lethbridge Library’s Top Summer Read 2013 contest.

Madi Harrison from Crowsnest Pass was the grand prize winner! She took home a new Sony E-Reader, and 16 new books.

Madi also won one of the program’s earlier prizes, a book bag package.

Teen summer programs have been available at the library for the last couple of years. Teens can participate on their own time, by reading and following online instructions. We look forward to what might be offered next summer.

The TD Summer Reading Program was a big hit at the library this year. The library offered a preschool program, and one for school-aged children. The six-week program was well attended, and quite popular. Children had the opportunity to read, be read to, play games, do crafts, and see old friends or meet new ones.

Public computers are a big draw at the library.

We have many local residents that come in to use them. This summer we had the opportunity to add two new computers to our collection. We now have six that can be used by the public. They have all received software upgrades.

The Wi-Fi system has been upgraded as well, for those who bring their own devices to the

The library is always adding new items to the collection. A list of new books and DVDs is available online at www.crowsnestpasslibrary.ca . This

summer a Sony E-Reader was added to the collection, for loan to library members. New e-books and audiobooks are also available for those who download and read or listen on E-Readers and other devices.

Borrowing from the library does require a membership. Annual memberships are available at the low cost of $10 per household, and can be waived for special circumstances.

Several tourists have been stopping by the library this summer. Maybe the new sign on the highway brings these people in. Some of them will use a computer, or the Wi-Fi. Others will pick up a book from our little summer book sale table.

If they have an Alberta Library Card they can borrow our books as well.

We’ve had a lot of compliments from people regarding the open, inviting atmosphere, and the attractive structure of the building.

Our library had the opportunity to help out some flood victims from High River (and Calgary as well). Most libraries in the Chinook Arch region offered free library services to High River residents, as they not only lost some of their homes, they also lost their library. High River is part of the Marigold Library System, not Chinook Arch, but that was never an issue. Marigold and the Town of High River have started the process of relocating and rebuilding the High River library.

Building girl power in the Pass

By Brad Quarin Girl Guides will make their triumphant return to Crowsnest Pass on Sept. 19, thanks to local women who’ve stepped up to lead the girls.

Among the first five guiders are Launa-Lynn Desrosiers and Emilie Brien, who have personal reasons for getting involved.

Emilie first joined the Girl Guides when she was 14 in Sherbrooke, Que., becoming a Pathfinder at the suggestion of a friend. “I loved it, and it brought me so much when I was a teenager, that now it’s my turn to pass it on,” she says.

With a love of nature, she came to Blairmore last August and now owns Smarty Paws Dog Services.

She also led Pathfinders in Pincher Creek.

Launa-Lynn’s reason for becoming a guider is her three daughters, who were in coed Scouts and Beavers in Crowsnest Pass. “I thought maybe more of a girl-oriented program would have been better,” she says. “As a stay-at-home mom, it’s another way I could contribute my time to girl power.” She’s long volunteered with children.

Girls have much to gain from guiding. Emilie reminisces that when she was younger, she took part in sports, ballet and piano, but guiding was something else altogether. “You get to try tons of activities, new things, new challenges. Really do stuff that you would never think about doing,” she says. This can include camping, rafting, crafts or community work.

life, a way of thinking,” she adds. “It’s not something you do, it’s something you are.”

Girls also make friends, who become “sisters.”

Launa-Lynn adds that her time as a Brownie and Guide taught her respect, and that involvement in the Guides can lead to other clubs, such as air cadets. Her husband, Dan, is commanding officer of the Crowsnest Pass Royal Canadian Air Cadets.

In starting Crowsnest Pass Girl Guides, they’re also getting plenty of help from Bev and Tracy Burton, who are guiders in Pincher Creek.

Tracy and Bev have been assisting with

scheduling and programming, and also provide emotional support to the new guiders. “They’ve actually given me a lot of confidence and encouragement,” Launa-Lynn says. “I look up to them.”

The guiders are excited and maybe a little apprehensive about the fall, but Launa-Lynn thinks it will go well. “It’s a program that needs to be added to our community.”

Emilie most looks forward to the camping, including in the fall and winter, but summer camp is the most thrilling.

They’re hoping for many girls, possibly starting with a small group and then gaining through word-of-mouth.

Mass registration takes place next Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at M.D. McEachern Community Centre, but girls can also register any time of the year. They can register online at www.girlguides. ca .

Registration costs $110, plus $40 for the uniform, but Emilie points out the organization helps out families who can’t afford to pay. “It’s for everybody,” she says.

Starting Sept. 19, the guides will meet at Isabelle Sellon School on Thursdays – Sparks and Brownies from 6 to 7 p.m., and Pathfinders from 4 to 6 p.m.

Experiences on the river and beyond

By Brad Quarin Three local kayakers gained a world of experience in July, competing in Slovakia before making successful appearances in the national championships at Kananaskis.

“I had loads of fun, it was a really great experience,” says Veronica Oczkowski of Beaver Mines.

She and Ryley Penner of Lundbreck performed on the national junior team for athletes under 18 in the world slalom championships.

Adrian Cole, a Blairmore native now based in Calgary, was on the under-23 national team.

Veronica says she stayed at an apartment building in Slovakia, paying for part of it with help from CanoeKayak Canada. The room, though small, was just right for three weeks.

For Ryley and Veronica, the stay was an opportunity to get to know their Canadian teammates better. Ryley notes they shared rooms and cooked together. “We really became friends,” he says.

They all enjoyed simply being in Liptovský Mikuláš, Slovakia.

“Beautiful country; I loved it there,” Adrian says. The people were lovely and the food was good – mostly, he ate goulash.

Culturally, the language was different, but many people there could speak English.

Ryley, who had never been to Europe before, describes the architecture in the small mountain community as “super cool” and old-fashioned.

challenging. The waters were faster and the course narrower, quite different than what she usually sees.

Ryley says he became ill during the race, which affected his results but had “a great experience” in the biggest competition of his life.

Adrian isn’t too preoccupied with the results.

Overall, it was a good time. “Every year, you meet new friends and new people, and that’s what I love about it so much,” he says.

There were 700 boats registered, making it one of the biggest international races ever.

Although the local kayakers weren’t able to crack the top half of the standings in their classes, they represented themselves and their country well.

KAYAKERS, continued from page 12 the national championships in Kananaskis, where they all did well. The floods this year damaged the courses, but Ryley’s stepdad, Chuck Lee, helped repair them.

Ryley placed fourth overall. In fact, he says, Alberta received the most points of any province.

Veronica says she was “really surprised” to receive two golds in downriver racing as she hadn’t done a great deal of training for this. One placing was in a 10-minute race and the other in a two-minute sprint.

In his age category, Adrian placed third in slalom, and he placed eighth overall. “I was really happy with how I was paddling there,” he says.

There’s little rest in this sport. Veronica went right back to training with Samuel Wey, an instructor from France. She feels she has improved with his knowledgeable help. She plans to continue competing, but at a lower level.

Ryley says he’s concentrating on doing better in the provincial championships in September, also in Kananaskis, and the worlds in April, in Australia.

Having enjoyed a vacation in the Dominican and a birthday celebration in Crowsnest Pass, Adrian says he’s back in his “insane life,” training in his boat. After the provincials in Kananaskis, he’ll still be lifting weights and training over the winter.“We don’t really have an off-season,” he says. Adrian is also bound for Australia.

Par set at $5,000

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek Curling Club’s efforts to fund a new building will be in full swing next weekend.

For a third year, the club is holding a golf tournament, and everyone is welcome to join in, says Rick Clark of the club’s fundraising committee. The tournament is on Sept. 14 at the Pincher Creek golf course, with a goal to raise $5,000.

Rick explains the tournament was started to help get the new building, and he had borrowed the idea from Victim Services with much success. Previous tournaments for the curling club brought in between $4,400 and $4,500.

The club still needs about $700,000, he estimates.

Anyone who knows how to golf and is looking for a fun time can register in teams of four, singles or doubles. Up to 80 people can play, a number chosen to keep the length of the tournament reasonable, as 18 holes will be played on a nine-hole course. The club hasn’t had difficulty filling the tournaments in previous years, Rick says.

The $80 fee per person also gets you a breakfast of ham and eggs and a supper of roast beef, served at the golf course.

Besides registration fees, the club makes money from the tournament through a 50-50 draw and business sponsorship. The club is also taking cash donations, and pricey donated merchandise will be raffled off.

Learn about FASD over lunch

By Brad Quarin Beef on a bun is rarely as educational as it will be on Monday, when free lunch will be served from the Provincial Building steps in Pincher Creek to raise awareness of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Awareness Day is observed on the ninth day of the ninth month to symbolize pregnancy. It draws attention to a range of conditions faced by those exposed to alcohol in the womb, an unfortunately common problem.

Thankfully, support is available to Pincher Creek, Crowsnest Pass and the Piikani Nation, through the McMan Rural FASD Lifespan Project, based in Pincher Creek.

Anne Gover is team leader of the project in Pincher Creek. She explains FASD can have physical, cognitive and behavioural effects, including slower development, difficulties with memory and understanding, and lack of emotional control.

Experts studying the disorder have found it’s best to abstain from alcohol completely during pregnancy to avoid the problem, she says.

Based in Edmonton, McMan Youth Family and Community Services Association is a nonprofit society that offers support concerning the disorder. They’ve been in Pincher Creek for three years, Anne says, and few small towns are as lucky.

McMan has two initiatives, one being life coaches who support and mentor those with FASD, aiming to develop their life and social skills. An official diagnosis of FASD brings a variety of financial and educational support, she says.

The life coach program receives funding from Alberta Justice’s Safe Communities Innovation Fund.

The second initiative is the outreach program, which trains and advises caregivers.

As part of the outreach program, the four Pincher Creek McMan staff members will be serving beef on a bun and chips at the Provincial Building from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visitors will have to bring their own beverages.

There will also be information tables, and Anne hopes the public will learn more about who they are.

Anne became involved in McMan because their office was next door to hers at Parent Link and she was amazed by the work she saw them do.

Good luck in London, Rob! Dr. Rob Cameron has the support of Pincher Creek hospital staff and the community behind him as he prepares to leave for England next week. Rob will represent Canada at the PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Final at Hyde Park in London.

“This is a great opportunity for me,” says Rob, whose intense training qualified him to

compete in the Olympic standard distance: 1.5-kilometre swim, 40-km bike ride and 10km run. The race takes place Sept. 15 at 1 a.m.
