My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin I’ve often wondered why I wasn’t satisfied being someone else’s employee or sitting idly on the sidelines watching the world go by.

My life would certainly be simpler if I lacked in entrepreneurial and community spirit, but I can’t imagine it any other way.

Many people, experiences and events have shaped the person I am today. These same influences continue to define and refine the way I see myself and what’s most important in my life at any given point in time.

I was self-employed by the age of 26. This was the beginning of 15 years loving (almost) every day I spent teaching music. I started, as most do, teaching from my home. Eventually I was renting 1,200 square feet of commercial space and working with almost 150 students each year.

I learned that growth was possible to whatever extent I was prepared to work for it. Because I loved what I was doing, I did it wholeheartedly.

What was missing was a support network. I met other teachers at workshops and festivals, but few seemed open to the idea of discussing the challenges we dealt with or sharing the successes of overcoming those challenges. Most were happy making their way on their own.

I joined our local chamber of commerce at a time when most members were business owners my parents’ age. Most were men, and many poohpoohed the idea of women operating businesses, especially those doing it from their homes. That attitude just made running my business successfully even more satisfying. There’s nothing like a naysayer to make you work a little harder.

From my mid-20s I was always looking for ways to do things bigger and better, whether I was on the local homecoming committee, at the piano bench or organizing a fundraiser. That’s just who I am.

When I moved to Pincher Creek, I chose not to continue teaching. I didn’t want to go through starting another business from scratch in a new

place.

Four years later I must laugh at myself, because that’s exactly what I’ve done, except starting the Breeze and Mountainside Printing has been far more challenging than hanging out a piano teacher’s shingle would have been!

Again, this is simply who I am. I saw an opportunity, took a risk and am experiencing personal satisfaction from what I do each day.

I write often of the people I’ve met along the way and how fortunate I am. Last week I was invited to a group meeting of women in business and am very interested to see how it grows.

Lisa Lockhart is organizing the meetings, and this was the second one. It’s open to businesswomen (not limited to owners) from Crowsnest Pass to Pincher Creek, and is simply an opportunity to support one another.

I already knew many of the ladies, connected faces to a few names I was familiar with, and met several others for the first time.

We met at M.J. Myden’s home in Bellevue and the meetings will move around each month. We enjoyed a presentation over a glass of wine and shared coming events and ideas. The informal atmosphere, laughter and sharing was really nice.

There’s potential for this to become a strong group and for it to create a new sense of community among women who share similar personality traits and drive. I believe it’s what I’ve been seeking for many years.

These are the same women I see volunteering in our communities, and ones who are determined to make a difference. They have the guts it takes to build businesses around a multitude of other commitments.

Women in business face unique challenges and this is an awesome opportunity to build on our strengths together.

I’ve offered to host the October meeting in the hope more Pincher Creek women will get involved while the group is young. If you’re interested in attending please let me know.

The Breeze Mailbox Good news for flood victims Finally, there is good news for rural southern Alberta. Flood recovery information sessions have been organized for rural areas and agricultural producers, and it is hoped that all affected residents will be able to attend one of the meetings to obtain the information they need to assist in their recovery.

Beyond the horrendous flooding events that took place in High River, many town and rural residents of the Livingstone Macleod constituency have also been greatly impacted. From Millarville, Priddis, Black Diamond, Turner Valley, Longview and Fort Macleod along with the rural areas of the MDs of Foothills, Willow Creek, Ranchlands, Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass, residents have had to deal with flooded basements, property damage and animal losses.

In fact, the Fort Macleod area along the Oldman River seems to have been somewhat overlooked by the provincial government’s information sessions. When I questioned them on that, the organizers indicated they would definitely add the area to their list as soon as possible.

I remind all residents that you must apply for the program! Please do not assume someone from the government will contact you eventually – that is not taking place. So, no matter where your property is, I strongly encourage all residents to immediately contact the Disaster Recovery Program (1-888-6711111) and to attend any sessions that are held, to ensure your application is made, your concerns are heard and are properly addressed.

Joe Brown recognized for community service

By Brad Quarin For Joe Brown, working in the RCMP had long been a dream.

Coming from a farm in Tofield, Joe joined a fire department at 18 and was later an ambulance worker. “I felt that I could do more,” he says. “So I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the RCMP, and the rest has been history.”

That history would stretch over 20 years, including 12 in Pincher Creek and the Piikani Nation, and is highlighted by a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

It was members of the Piikani Nation detachment who nominated Joe, in appreciation of his community work and contributions to the detachment.

“It means quite a bit to me,” he says. “It’s an honour to be recognized.”

He explains he wanted to join the RCMP because of his desire to work with rural communities and meet farmers and ranchers, and he felt he had something to offer. As a Mountie, he was first stationed in Stony Plain and moved around from there, requesting to come to this area and arriving in June 2000. He knew a sergeant and several other members in Brocket, which is part of why he wanted the posting.

Joe finds policing in the Piikani Nation and Pincher Creek to not be very different, and has seen all kinds of interesting cases.

He met with town officials, contractors and the architect about the new building.

These days, his service is more of a desk job. More paperwork means more responsibilities, supervising other officers in the detachments and reporting to his superiors in the district. He feels the detachments have great members to work with.

Const. Doug Sokoloski has good things to say about Joe’s leadership, calling him “a good people person” whom everyone likes.

Doug arrived to the area in 2007, and Joe helped him get to know the place. “He’s really good to me.”

TLC for Flumerfelt Park

By Brad Quarin Flumerfelt Park in Coleman will be receiving some TLC from the municipality and Crowsnest Conservation Society on Friday, and you can come along to help.

Kim Lutz, who works for the municipality, says a variety of native trees and shrubs will be planted at the park. The efforts are in part thanks to funding from the Alberta Conservation Association.

For volunteers, it’s a wonderful chance to learn about plants that might be good for your garden, she says. The benefit of the work is that the plants willd guard against riverbank erosion.

The conservation society planted at Flumerfelt last year too, says member Merilyn Liddell. This year’s efforts will extend to private lands, as property owners will be encouraged to weed their land and will be supplied with trees and shrubs.

The work starts at 9 a.m. and, if they have enough people, could end by noon. Merilyn says the work isn’t very hard, with the digging being the main thing. Volunteers should bring work gloves and a shovel.

This is the third year in a three-year plan for this program, and the funding has allowed for having a riparian restoration technician, Megan McRae. Megan’s job is to watch areas for invasive plants and remove them, and she will be out helping on Friday.

Merilyn says the Crowsnest Conservation Society intends to continue taking care of riverbanks.

Addressing suicide through SafeTALK

By Brad Quarin You may know someone you think could be having suicidal thoughts.

You may be unsure what to do.

There is a program for you and, thanks to the Ricky Ryp Foundation, it’s coming to Crowsnest Pass. A free SafeTALK course will be offered at Crowsnest Consolidated High School in Coleman on Sept. 21.

“Our hope is that it will generate more conversation,” says Corinne Petrone, a volunteer with the Ricky Ryp Foundation. “We’re hoping this is just the start.”

SafeTALK is a product of the Centre for Suicide Prevention, which is tied in with the Canadian Mental Health Association. The course, which takes three and a half hours, is designed to train anyone over 16 to recognize if a person has suicidal thoughts and to talk about it. It addresses misconceptions and attitudes about suicide, and helps you see to what degree a person might be a suicide risk. The program has never been offered in the Pass before.

Corinne took a more comprehensive program from the Centre for Suicide Prevention and found it a great help.

“I started asking questions, and it’s amazing to see the response you get,” she says. “I think you can directly see how you’ve helped someone.”

A suicide in the Pass moved Corinne’s husband, Chad, to join the Ricky Ryp Foundation, and she became involved, too.

When she told others in the foundation about the program, they jumped at it. Foundation president, Wes Rypien Jr., brother of late hockey player Rick Rypien of Coleman, “was on board right away.”

They see the importance of addressing suicide. “It’s an issue that doesn’t go away,” she says. “The more people feel comfortable, the more the community talks about it, the better we can heal and support each other.”

There is room for 30 people in the course, an effective size for going over the material. Corinne hopes the program will be offered again, so even more people can benefit.

A great way to share your love of reading

By Brad Quarin Literacy is power, and often taken for granted. But according to the Crowsnest Pass Adult Literacy Program, 22 per cent of adults in Canada have great difficulty reading, and 24 per cent more can read only simple material. You can help empower them by volunteering as a tutor.

“It’s a really rewarding job,” says program co-ordinator Cheryl Cann. “You learn as much as you teach. It’s amazing how you learn from every student.”

Despite having challenges with literacy, adult students usually have their own skills and might draw on them to learn.

Some of the more memorable success stories for Cheryl come from students learning English as a second language, who have been eager to learn. After one or two years, they’re working in the community, talking and connecting with people. “It feels great to see a student progress,” she says.

While most students are new to the English language, the literacy program also serves basic language learners. These are adults educated in Canada who didn’t obtain a needed literacy level, sometimes due to

social circumstances or learning disabilities, such as dyslexia. Due to the potential stigma on these people, confidentiality is key.

The goals of the students vary, with some aiming to earn their driver’s licence and others wanting to read to their children. Some arrive able only to write their names and addresses. The tutoring becomes individualized, and progress takes more time with some than others. “No two students have the same program,” Cheryl says. “That’s the beauty of one-on-one tutoring.”

on a dozen or so volunteers a year. Any adult who has a real passion for reading and patience for learners can be a tutor. There aren’t any requirements for a certain level of schooling, as a lot of reading can make volunteers great with English.

Each volunteer receives about 12 hours of training on how to tutor, usually broken up into two six-hour days during weekdays.

Training a group of tutors often works best, but they can be trained one at a time. Cheryl continues to support tutors after that.

The time commitment for tutoring is just two hours per week. She says they often pair up students and tutors with meshing schedules to make this easier.

Lately, tutors have often been retirees and female, but young adults and men are welcome to tutor.

Tutors and students can work in the M.D. McEachern Community Centre, where the literacy program is based, or more accessible areas, like the Blairmore library.

Cheryl is expecting students soon, so she hopes for tutors to volunteer as soon as possible. If interested, contact her at 403-562-2853.

Sprucing up Hillcrest Mines Cemetery

By Brad Quarin In preparation for the 100th anniversary of the Hillcrest mining disaster, volunteers gathered on Sunday to clean up Hillcrest Mines Cemetery.

Beautification Day, intended to clear out unwanted plants and fix up fences, was a great success, with a turnout of around 40 people. Volunteer Wilfred Milburn was a former Hillcrest miner.

Brighter Futures in the Napi Friendship Centre and Pincher Creek’s Parent Link, which will teach parents and children Blackfoot phrases and writing. The goal is to help keep Blackfoot culture alive, and the course is open to everyone.

Another exciting course making its debut, Hidden Gems, offers a chance to go into different fields and find rocks and fossils. Jenny is a former student of the instructor, Brett Jensen of Lethbridge College, and calls him “an awesome instructor” with knowledge and enthusiasm. The deadline to register is Sept. 19.

Familiar and important courses include English as a second language, with a registration deadline of Thursday. The coffee group for English language learners is also back on at Mrs. P’s on Thursdays.

Popular classes such as Nia, a mix of yoga, dance and martial arts, and Let’s Knit, taught by Brenda Rottger, are back on the schedule. You have until Sept. 19 to register for Nia and Oct. 10 for Let’s Knit.

Wendy Davies of Willow Valley Soapworks,

a regular and talented instructor, will be back, this time teaching how to make lip balms and lotions.

The variety of courses ensures Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council has something for everyone aged 18 and up in the community. Classes can run for one day or for weeks, on evenings or Saturdays. The council strives to keep the courses affordable, and they range from $5 to $50, with some free.

“We’re always looking for new tutors for our Read and Write Literacy Program,” Jenny says.

“It’s a very valuable program.” After free training, you can volunteer an hour a week and be paired with a learner.

They also need possible instructors, including anyone with a skill.

At the end of the month, you can check out the adult learning program yourself during the open house at St. Michael’s School. You can tour the new classroom, enjoy some food and register for classes.

Learning for life from a new location

By Brad Quarin The Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council, which promotes lifelong learning through educational courses for adults, has a new home in St. Michael’s School and new classes to offer.

“We’re pretty optimistic and excited about this year,” says the council’s Jenny Vandersteen.

The biggest change is the new location, which they sought after Lethbridge College’s campus in Ranchland Mall closed. St. Michael’s School had room for the adult learning program and is a good host, Jenny says. “We’re very thankful.”

But there are other new things, including the ability to take registrations and payments online at www.pincherlearn.ca . And while many of the courses will still cover basic topics like arts, business and computers, others are brand new. These include courses that can teach you how to play guitar or prepare sushi.

Come for the harvest fun at KBPV

By Brad Quarin Harvest time was traditionally an occasion for communities to come together to celebrate and enjoy a potluck.

In that spirit, Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village in Pincher Creek is holding its annual Harvest Festival this Saturday, along with an old-fashioned carnival for kids.

“It’s a family event right after school goes back in. Parents are looking for something to do with their kids,” says Denise Somerville, who looks after special events for the museum. There will be things for adults, too. “Canada Day and Harvest Festival are usually very well attended.”

For children, the carnival will be like stepping into the past. After the $2 admission to the festival, admission to the carnival costs 25 cents, because that would have been the cost of such a carnival in 1950.

After children receive their tickets, they’ll be able to experience classic games, rather than the automated ones common today. These will include ring toss, beanbag toss and throwing balls into apple baskets, along with a duck pond and prizes.

Children may also enjoy the crafts, this year making little wooden trains out of pieces provided, with some instruction. Denise, who’s been at KBPV since 1999, saw the trains made at the festival once

before and says they were very popular.

Both adults and children can enter a contest to make centrepieces, after getting an entry form at the museum. Those may turn out handy for Thanksgiving.

Also of interest to adults will be the farmers market, as the Hutterites will have a table of vegetables and baking for sale. This is the first year for their farmers market in the festival, and Denise hopes there can be a display of Hutterite history at the museum someday.

Another new thing for the festival is the antique vehicle show and shine, organized by volunteer Ray Degen. Visitors will vote on the best vehicle, a title which comes with a prize.

Naturally, there will be food and music, including a $2 pancake breakfast at 9 a.m. and chili for lunch.

Volunteers and staff will be dressed in costumes reflecting the 1940s and 1950s, and others can dress up, too.

Many festival activities will be under tents or awnings, so they’ll be happening rain or shine.

Harvest Festival runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the old-fashioned carnival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., all at KBPV.

Greetings from Crestview By the residents of Crestview Lodge, Pincher Creek

This past month has been delightful and busy.

On Aug. 15 we took a trip down to Glenwood Cheese Factory Museum and Pioneer Ice Cream Parlour. Wow, a delicious selection of ice cream! Some of us went beyond our usual safe vanilla and tried flavours like New York cheesecake, double chocolate, and mint chocolate chip.

After the very enjoyable, very large portions of ice cream, we looked at all the old machinery and pictures of the original cheese factory. For some of us it was a trip down memory lane, and we shared great stories together.

Pub night on Friday is always a good time. Barb L., our administrative assistant, brought her karaoke machine in for us and

sang great songs we could all follow along to.

Aug. 17, as we were getting ready for the parade, we watched Gordon Johnson getting his team of horses ready to hitch up to our float. It was nice to watch how he backed them up so nicely and they were so calm. Gordon and his wife donated their time and brought their team down from Claresholm to pull our float for us. Frank Zieffle from the Twin Butte area donated the wagon for us to use and decorate, and he also put us in touch with the Johnsons.

The Crestview float had 10 residents riding on it, with Charmaine and her family walking beside the float dressed up in 1900s bathing suits made by Dolly Toney and Betty Heppner. A very big thank you

to all who helped and volunteered; we won second prize for team of horses float!

Aug. 22 was our annual family barbecue here at Crestview Lodge. About 150 people attended. The event went very smoothly as everyone was patient and enjoyed the huge buffet that was spread out before us. One of our residents, John C., sang a hymn and said grace to begin our fabulous dinner that everyone worked so hard to make. A big thanks to all the volunteers and staff who worked so well together and made everything happen without a hitch!

September is starting out slowly – a much needed break – which is probably a good thing, since last week was a whirlwind of excitement.

The Mennonite Singers came to entertain us on Sept. 10. The precious songbirds sure do warm our hearts as they sing. We are blessed to have this wonderfully talented group come visit us each month.

Helping the hungry

By Brad Quarin Leaving a bag of non-perishable food items on your front doorstep this Saturday will have a positive impact for the community.

The annual Pincher Creek Food Drive will be underway on Saturday morning, led by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and other volunteers. This year’s organizer, Mark Leishman, encourages members of the community to donate to the drive.

“Their support is going to help fill hungry people with hope,” he says.

The church, encouraged by its headquarters in Salt Lake City, launched the food drive as an annual service day three years ago. A similar food drive had been held in Calgary, and members of the local church figured it would be successful here as well.

Sure enough, it has been, as Mark feels the community is generous. About 40 families volunteered for last year’s food drive, and there were many donations.

He expects this year will be at least as successful. “There will be more awareness,” he says, as people will remember the drive from the last two years.

The food drive will cover at least 24 Pincher Creek routes, varying from 20 to 90 houses.

We’ll find out today if there will be enough volunteers to also pick up food in Cowley and Lundbreck.

On Saturday, you can leave non-perishable foods in a plastic bag on your doorstep before 10 a.m. Foods needed include rice, pasta, cereal, canned fruits, canned meats, and juices.

Volunteers will pick it up between 10 and 11 a.m. Volunteers include members of the church and other individuals, and anyone is welcome to pitch in.

Mark, a member of the church, was asked to help with the food drive this year, a task that members take turns with. He’s happy to have the responsibility.

The Napi Friendship Centre, which runs the food bank, appreciates their contribution and any other donations they receive. The new building for the food bank is being renovated, but they can still store donated food, says Andrea Anderson. A member of the church, Andrea will be out volunteering in the food drive as well.

A new place for Parent Link in Pincher Creek

By Brad Quarin Parent Link has a new location, with the Parent Link Family Centre now open in Ranchland Mall in Pincher Creek.

The move means more space, more services and more hours, says executive director Anne Gover.

She explains the motto of Parent Link is Play, Learn, Connect, allowing families to play, which is important, and teaching parenting methods. The centre hosts guest speakers and points parents to other available services.

Pincher Creek has had Parent Link for seven years. The centre was previously located on Main Street, and now enjoys four times more space as they enter Phase 2.

They’ll be venturing into new things like arts and music and growing to serve ages six to 12, Anne says.

One new thing this fall is the mini-chefs program, which brings grandparents and grandchildren together to make healthy snacks. Lots of grandparents are taking care of children these days, so Parent Link wanted something aimed at them.

were very cute in their mini-aprons.

Of course, the usual programs will be back this fall, including a group to educate new and expecting moms. The popular Lego league will be taking place in the mall, so maybe shoppers can join the fun. In June they had a building contest. On Sept. 28, Parent Link will take part in the free family dance at the mall.

Anne is most excited about arts and music programs the centre could have one day, with ideas like “drop-in beats,” a record-

ing studio for teens. Sewing and knitting are possibilities as well. “We have tons of ideas,” she says.

Lots of people are using Parent Link, with the centre counting attendance of about 500 people a month. For example, the Gymtastics program, involving tumbling, games and songs, may draw about 50 people.

The children’s clothing giveaway has helped many people, including a new mom who now donates much to the program.

Anne calls the giveaway “a real tribute to the generosity of the community.”

The Family Centre will need volunteers to sell tickets for fundraisers, make suggestions for programming or watch children when parents are out of the room. Volunteers can take pride in being part of a mission “to make Pincher Creek the best place to raise a child,” Anne says, and playing with youngsters can be rewarding.

In time, the Family Centre could be a place for teen programming, a Boys and Girls Club for Pincher Creek or meetings of other agencies.

The Parent Link Family Centre is open Monday to Thursday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
