My Little Corner

By Shannon Robin It’s almost turkey time!

There’s something about sitting down to dinner with those I love most that makes Thanksgiving one of my favourite holidays.

It lacks the busyness and commercialism of Christmas, and the bottom line is simply togetherness and gratitude.

Our family is small – I have two siblings and my daughter has only one cousin. If everyone makes it to dinner with their significant other we max out at 10 people at the dinner table.

For us, it’s perfect.

Mom cooks a great bird, and some of us feel obliged to eat until our belts are bursting.

The smart ones wear sweat pants with an elastic waistband, or better yet, something snazzy with no waistband at all.

The stuffing is always awesome, and I find myself checking everyone else’s plate to be sure I’ve got my fair share. Then I sneak back to the kitchen for a scoop more. It’s a casual move, but everyone knows what I’m up to.

As the meal winds down, it’s time for the biggest question of the night.

“Do you want pie?” Mom will ask. Of course I want pie, but after that last heaping helping of stuffing there’s really not room for pie.

I usually ponder the question over a cup of tea as I watch servings of apple, pumpkin and lemon meringue slices pass by. Most often I admit there’s not enough room to tamp in another single bite and pie becomes my late night snack.

If I happen to wander away from the table while contemplating the pie question I’m in big trouble. That’s when the tryptophan in the turkey tries to lure me to an after-dinner nap.

Perhaps a full turkey dinner every night would cure my insomnia for good!

Our dinner conversation is likely similar to that happening around other tables that same evening. We catch up on everything we’ve missed back home, from the politics to the gossip, and

share our own personal news.

Gluttony aside, I’m thankful to have this bit of tradition and consistency in my busy life, and a special day to look forward to.

Being together with my family and sneaking off to spend a bit of time with friends makes the 22 hours of driving we’ll do this weekend worth every minute.

As a family we are fortunate to have much to be grateful for. We also have some great memories to share and new ones to make.

It’s nice to have dedicated time to focus on the gifts we have in our lives rather than on what we want or what doesn’t seem to be going right.

I’d like to sign off this week with best wishes to you all for this special day.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could carry the spirit of Thanksgiving with us all year long?

In each of our days, we can find small blessings, but too often we overlook them, choosing instead to spend our time paying attention to problems.

We give our energy to those who cause us trouble instead of those who bring peace.

Starting now, let’s be on the lookout for the bits of pleasure in each hour, and appreciate the people who bring love and light to everyone who is blessed to know them.

Top honours for Lore and Daisy-May

By Judith Snowdon Congratulations to Lore Bruder and her cardigan Welsh corgi, Daisy-May, on winning the prestigious CKC Herding Showcase held at Cobble Hill on Vancouver Island. This team’s consistency in handling the sheep through challenging courses in a calm, even manner produced the scores necessary to win not only a large herding started course, but the entire showcase, proving that hard work and dedication to the sport pays off.

There are three levels in the Canadian Kennel Club herding trials: herding started, herding intermediate and herding advanced. Course difficulty increases at each level. Dog and handler teams need to receive three qualifying scores under two judges in order to receive a title. The averages of the scores are recorded during the year, and the top 10 dogs with the highest averages in each of the competition levels are invited to enter the herding showcase.

Lore and Daisy-May were among the top 10 in the herding started class. The dogs had three trial attempts to gain the highest average in the showcase. Each trial is judged simultaneously by two CKC herding judges. This year, judges Lynn Leach and Gloria Graham awarded Lore and Daisy-May the highest score in the herding started class and also the highest scoring team in the entire showcase, over some stiff competition.

A tea party for a special young lady

By Shannon Robin Kylie McMaster of Pincher Creek was treated to a vintage tea party photo shoot this weekend, thanks to local photographer Jenny Vandersteen.

Over three days, almost 30 young lasses and lads visited Jenny’s outdoor set in the Gladstone Valley area. They had beautiful smiles and good spirits despite high winds and a nip in the air.

Kylie came out with her whole family – her parents, Holly and Claire, and brother, Connor.

Kylie had her hair styled and her choice of fancy dresses and accessories to wear.

Like the rest of the boys, Connor was drawn to Jacques Daignault’s shiny 1930 Hudson car, which added a masculine touch amid the ruffles and bows.

“The setup was very cool,” Jenny says. “It was a little more boy-friendly than the first tea party was in June.”

Kylie went along with everything with a smile, resulting in a series of photos her family will treasure.

“Jenny was nice enough to let Connor come too, which made Kylie happy,” Holly says. If anyone can make Kylie smile, it’s Connor.

Jenny came up with the idea of using tea party sets as fundraisers last spring. She was looking for a way to turn a photo session into something with even more meaning for everyone involved.

The first tea party featured Ellie Weisshaar, who has the rare genetic disorder Idic15. Jenny’s plan was to raise awareness of Ellie’s condition and funds for Idic15 research. Her plan was a successful one in both respects, complete with a donation of almost $500 to Idic15 Canada.

Ellie’s mom, Lachlan Rempel, suggested Kylie as a great choice for the second tea party. The wheels were set in motion and Jenny sent a message to Kylie’s mom, Holly, through Facebook.

Holly was surprised by the neat opportunity being offered to her daughter.

“Holly was interested right away and very excited about it,” Jenny says.

Jenny learned that Kylie has Lennox Gastaut Syndrome, one of the most severe forms of epilepsy. Through her campaign, more people are now aware of the challenges of LGS and how it affects the McMaster family.

“It’s pretty amazing,” Jenny says. “You have all these other kids who have everything perfect and easy, and yet Kylie seems twice as happy as them.”

Six-year-old Kylie suffers from seizures due to LGS. At times, cluster seizures have numbered 800 or more in a day. Holly and Claire have kept busy learning about the syndrome since Kylie’s diagnosis in 2012, and watch over her carefully.

In May, Kylie spent five days at the children’s hospital in Calgary to undergo EEG screening.

She had been eating little and her doctors needed to come up with new options. Holly says proof of the seizures was needed to help the medical team determine their next move. For five days, Kylie was seizure-free, which stumped everyone.

Doctors chose to eliminate Kylie’s medication to see what would happen. She hasn’t had a seizure since then, which Holly says has even the neurologist baffled.

Holly says Kylie is “a little bit off ” right now. “I can’t put my finger on it, but she’s just not feeling well, and missing a fair bit of school.”

What better way to make a little girl feel wonderful than to make her princess for a day?

“It turned out great and was for a great cause,” Holly says. “Ours was the better day, but how do you control the weather?”

Jenny also added a new twist to this fundraiser – the beautiful handmade costumes were all up for auction. She purchased some of the items, while others were made and donated especially for the event. Everything was open to bids online, raising just over $1,000. This, along with a portion of the session fees, will be donated to the Lennox Gastaut Research Foundation.

Jenny hosted her first tea party on a whim, and is already planning on another next July when the buttercups are in bloom.

“This is the most fun, inspiring and fulfilling photographic event I’ve ever done!” Jenny exclaims. She plans to make it bigger and better every year.

“This event would not have been possible without the help of so many wonderful people,” Jenny says. This includes Teri Tapay and Fondant Creations at Sobeys, Purely Inspired Hair Academy, helpers Annie and Marissa, Henny Penny Creations, Funked Up, donors of auction items, Jacques Daignault, Jenny’s family, and all the families who conquered the wind at the photo shoot.

Are you prepared for a kitchen fire?

By Brad Quarin Local fire departments are joining others across North America this week in observing Fire Prevention Week. But shouldn’t every week be Fire Prevention Week?

Safety is important year-round, but Pincher Creek’s fire prevention officer, Pat Neumann, says this is a special chance for departments to raise awareness of their presence in the community. It’s also a great time for education. “It allows us the opportunity to get the message out more,” he says.

To that end, on Monday and Tuesday, Crowsnest Pass firefighters visited Horace Allen School and Isabelle Sellon School to talk to students about fire prevention. Students were shown a video with helpful tips from everyone’s favourite meerkat and warthog, Timon and Puumba.

Tonight, this will be followed by an open house at the Blairmore fire station, says deputy fire chief Jamie Wilkinson. The open house runs from 6 to 8 p.m.

This year, the focus of Fire Prevention Week is kitchen fires, so the firefighters will have a kitchen fire demonstration for people to see. They’ll be setting a fire to teach you things to avoid doing.

There will also be a rope rescue demonstration and children will be able to try hitting targets with a fire hose!

to fight muscular dystrophy. That’s a cause fire departments in Canada and the U.S. have championed for years, Jamie says.

Everyone is welcome to the Blairmore open house, and it’s a great chance to learn how to prevent kitchen fires and how to use a fire extinguisher.

Pincher Creek’s fire department is also sending staff to schools to talk to children about fire safety and show them videos, Pat says. This includes Livingstone School in Lundbreck.

During the visits, firefighters will hand out entry forms that students can fill out to possibly win an iPad. The open house for Pincher Creek’s firehall will be on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. It will be a chance for people to come and meet the firefighters of Pincher Creek and maybe a couple from Beaver Mines.

Visitors will also be able to see the equipment firefighters use, ask questions and see how a firehall operates.

Pat has a few fire safety tips, including changing the batteries for smoke detectors, turning pot handles in when using the stove and turning burners off when done cooking.

At the Piikani Nation, the Peigan fire department will visit Peigan School this week to distribute material that children can take home to their parents. Fire Chief Floyd Provost says students will also be touring the station, so they can look around and hold onto a fire hose when it’s turned on.

The Breeze Mailbox C.N.P. fire rating improves My father was a career fireman of 35 years. When he was hired in 1949 it was because he was a really good pitcher and a great addition to their baseball team. He didn’t even meet the height requirements of the day. These were also the days when you drove by a fire department and the firemen were all out front of the firehall waiting for the alarm.

Eventually, change happened. The recruits had to pass physical and mental tests to be hired. There was no more sitting around. Every working day was a training day if you weren’t out fighting fires. Let me tell you, the old guard was not happy. They liked things the way they were, but because of the changes we now have fire departments that are equipped and ready for any emergency.

The changes in our fire department here in Crowsnest Pass were not easy on anyone. Change never is. I applaud our council that was willing to take on the tough challenges no matter how much it hurt and how much they were criticized for it. They made the changes that were necessary.

The fire department was recently tested and we had our fire rating go from a 7 (10 is the worst) to a 3 (1 is the best). We could end up being the first town in Canada receiving a rating of 2. This rating saves all home and business owners money. Our fire insurance rates are set by these rating numbers. Change hurts but this change is good. It helps us all. We’re safer and we have more money in our pockets.

Tickles and Tunes = family fun

By Brad Quarin Moms or dads looking for some precious one-on-one time with their little bundles of joy have a wonderful resource in Crowsnest Pass.

Tickles and Tunes has started for a third year at M.D. McEachern Community Centre, and is proving so popular that there’s a desire to extend it with a spring session.

“It’s definitely been picking up over the last couple of years,” says Teri Harrison of Brighter Futures, which runs the program with the Crowsnest Pass Literacy Foundation. “And there’s a lot of babies on the way.”

A class will keep infants amused or calm, with singing by parents, finger play and homemade toys. The songs are classics that parents themselves used to enjoy, and one toy they’ve made is the discovery bag, filled with baby oil, water and food colouring.

“It’s awesome cuddle time,” Teri says. “It’s a great way to spend some time with your baby.”

The fun and games perform an important function, she says, as there’s “a huge correlation” between children who’ve done this and learning to talk and read later. “It’s kind of that first step, the building blocks.”

She explains that babies, newborns to crawlers under 10 or 15 months old, love to hear their parents’ voices, regardless of how well they can sing.

Eventually they learn about rhythm, and the oldest child currently in the group, a one-year-old, is learning hand signals.

Jaime Reeve adds that the singing introduces the babies to language, and helps make them want to learn.

At the same time, the program allows parents to exchange stories about their babies and ask questions. “It gives you a chance to see you’re not alone,” Teri says.

There are currently 14 families taking the program, and she believes the number of children in Crowsnest Pass is on the rise.

Brighter Futures is a federally funded service that offers free family programs for children six and under. They work from September to the end of June, plus a special day in the summer. Tickles and Tunes, which is also free, is a six-week program.

The idea for Tickle and Tunes came three years ago, when many moms had just had second children and desired some one-on-one time with the new babies, Teri recalls. The idea was taken to Brighter Futures and the literacy foundation, which each supply a facilitator.

Childcare is provided at MDM for the babies’ older brothers and sisters.

Rob was born and raised at Pincher Creek, the son of Otto and Ethel Schoening, and brother of Donald, and Audrey Beer, and the late Howard Schoening.

Rob was predeceased by his wife Rhea, his parents, and brother Howard. Rob is survived by brother Donald, sister Audrey, three step-children – Isabel, Gerry and Marjorie, and 11 nieces and nephews.

Beefing up the 4-H club

By Brad Quarin A parent meeting tomorrow night and a meeting for children and parents on Oct. 19 will kickstart another year for Pincher Creek’s Foothills 4-H Beef Club.

Members of the club, aged nine to 21, learn about cattle, take care of steers or heifers and auction steers off. That explains the name, but the club is also more, getting children active in community service and teaching them a variety of other things, says leader Kathy Welsch.

At the MD of Pincher Creek office basement tomorrow at 7 p.m., parents will learn what the club has in mind for the year and establish project leaders.

The Oct. 19 meeting, also at the MD basement at 7 p.m., will see elections for various positions within the club and planning for the club’s events. The second meeting will also determine if members want to raise a charity steer or scholarship steer this year.

While an individual member can raise a steer and collect the money from its auction, a charity steer or scholarship steer is a team effort. A family looks after the steer and the proceeds from its auction go to a charity or scholarships for club members.

With a scholarship steer, the member of the community who purchases the steer is basically investing in a 4-H member by supporting his or her education. “This community is so supportive of 4-H,” Kathy says.

Last year, the club had a charity steer. It sold in May, and the decision of where to donate the money was left to the young members of the club. They chose causes important to them, one being the Care Bears, who drive for local seniors and disabled people.

The other cause which members were passionate about was more global, namely Free the Children, which aims for education and development in other countries. Free the Children commented to the Foothills 4-H Beef Club that this was the first time they’d ever received money from a steer auction. “They thought it was the neatest idea,” Kathy says.

It’s a challenge to raise a steer, including feeding it, grooming it, making sure it weighs the right amount, with a weigh-in day in November, and learning how to sell it.

Besides a chance to earn some money from a steer auction, the club offers other benefits for those who join. Members can keep heifers and produce calves. “They’re building their own herd,” she says.

The community service is also good for the club’s members. “It’s good for the kids to give back,” she says, as the youth have enjoyed meeting seniors, playing games with them and performing music for them.

Members can also learn about public speaking and giving presentations, and the meetings themselves teach them how to have meetings. Kathy finds it neat to see young children sharing ideas, beginning to make motions and growing confidence in the meetings.

Last year, the Foothills 4-H Beef Club had 10 members, aged nine to 18.

By Brad Quarin The nominations are in, and soon the Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce will be presenting the 18th annual Awards of Excellence.

There were many nominations this year, as the public jumped forward to show their appreciation for Pincher Creek businesses and community members. The awards will be given out at Heritage Inn on Oct. 23.

“It’s to recognize people and businesses in this community that are friendly, and making their customers happy all year-round,” says chamber administrator Lieve Parisis. “It’s their day.”

She’s pleased with the nominees, and the number of nominations has shot up considerably this year.

The categories are mostly business-related. There are awards for family farm, large business with 10 employees or more, small business with under nine staff, customer service, employee of the year and junior entrepreneur.

There’s an environmental stewardship award, and the Spirit of Pincher Creek award for anyone making a difference, not necessarily in business.

The first 66 nominations came in for 35 candidates, with some people, businesses or groups nominated multiple times. Nominators share the rationale for their choices on the nomination forms which are reviewed by a panel of five judges, some from the chamber and others with expertise in certain fields.

Category winners will be chosen today, and the names will be kept under wraps until the awards ceremony, which all nominees and interested community members are invited to attend.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m., and the dinner, prepared by Heritage Inn, begins at 6:15. Call the chamber at 403-627-5199 for a ticket, and be quick, as seats are limited.

The MC is Bob Westrop, who is also nominated for the Spirit of Pincher Creek Award, and the main sponsor is ATB, which is nominated for customer service.

An award can be very special for recipients. “It really means a lot to people,” Lieve says, and many are surprised, speechless or in tears. Nominees who don’t receive the award appreciate the recognition just as much.

Ryp Athletics officially opens in C.N.P. today

By Brad Quarin A new gym for Crowsnest Pass is celebrating its grand opening today.

Ryp Athletics, located on Main Street Blairmore, is being launched by Wes Rypien Jr. and his wife, Lindsay.

Wes explains Ryp Athletics is distinct from other local gyms, offering personal training and fitness instruction.

“I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time,” he says. He’s coached hockey and played other sports, and earned a personal training certificate in the spring to make sure he can teach others in a correct, safe way.

Lindsay, who has participated in bodybuilding shows, also liked the idea.

“We both have the same lifestyle, and we enjoy being physically fit, and we thought that we could help other people in doing that,” Wes says.

The personal training with Wes includes all sorts of activities, such as weightlifting, biking, running or boxing, while Lindsay is leading group classes. The goal is to develop sports skills or fitness levels for anyone, including teenagers and seniors.

For example, hockey training can involve training on ice at the Coleman arena, but at Ryp Athletics it will consist of weightlifting and drills specifically intended to develop hockey skills.

Ryp Athletics also has limited open-gym memberships, for members to work out in the gym when it’s not being used.

Challenges in starting the business have been manageable, including waiting for construction to wrap up. Even before the grand opening, public interest and enthusiasm has been overwhelming, Wes says.

The grand opening will be celebrated from 4 to 7 p.m. today, with wine and cheese and gift bags for the first 50 people to arrive. There will also be demonstrations of personal training and TRX strength-training equipment.

With Ryp Athletics, Wes hopes to help young athletes follow their dreams and to maintain a business he enjoys running.

Celebrate Peuchen Block success with wine and cheese today!

By Brad Quarin The grand openings today of two businesses – Crowsnest Vein and Medical Laser Clinic, and Ryp Athletics – in downtown Blairmore’s Peuchen Block are a joyous occasion, and not just for those businesses. The occasion is also a victory for the Crowsnest Opportunity Development Cooperative, which will be celebrating with wine and cheese in Ryp Athletics.

Larry Saloff, a founding director of CODC and a current shareholder, explains CODC is a new initiative to raise money for local projects.

Revitalizing Peuchen Block was its first project, and he says it’s “something the community can take pride in.”

There were three or four historic buildings in downtown Blairmore that had been neglected, Larry believes. He and Shane Stewart bought one of them, Peuchen Block, to sell it to CODC last November, and renovations began in February. Money was raised through advertising and various connections.

The whole inside of the structure was torn out, with new floors, plumbing and electrical heating put in. “You wouldn’t recognize the building,” Larry says. Following the renovations, CODC wanted the businesses moving into the building to be completely new, rather than old businesses relocating. Meanwhile, the four new apartments in Peuchen Block were leased to Riversdale Resources for its geologists and workmen, in its quest to bring coal mining back to Crowsnest Pass.

The end result means new life for a historic building and new businesses for Crowsnest Pass. Everyone is welcome to come to the open house, with free wine and cheese thanks to CODC and the new businesses.

Peuchen Block was built between 1911 and 1912, and was one of the earliest brick buildings put up after a fire destroyed many wooden buildings in Blairmore. It was named for A.G. Peuchen, a Titanic survivor who helped pay for the construction. The building is located on the 13000 block of 20th Avenue.

On Sept. 23, the students at Napi’s Playground School in Brocket commemorated the signing of Treaty 7. The elders – the keepers of our traditions, language and stories – were invited for lunch and to witness the event. Jo-Ann Yellow Horn prepared numerous students from her Blackfoot language classes to participate in the re-enactment.

William Big Bull Jr. was master of ceremonies. He also provided the factual information for the play to Bernadette Pard, who transcribed it into her book, A Nation in Transition.

Const. Lawrence Jackson of the Brocket RCMP detachment represented the NWMP in the production. Lawrence and William are both direct descendants of Jerry Potts, who was an interpreter at the actual event on Sept. 22, 1877.

By Brad Quarin The Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council is settled in its new home in St. Michael’s School, and welcomes you to come see the location.

The open house takes place tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. and offers a tour of the classroom, a barbecue and a chance to register for courses.

“We’d love people to come on up and have a hamburger and view our new offices,” says Annie Steward, an administrator for Adult Learning.

Annie and co-ordinator Jenny Vandersteen will be there to meet people and answer questions, and visitors can check out the fall programs.

It’s not too late to register for courses to learn guitar or Spanish, or take Nia or meditation, Annie says. Computer classes also start this month, and registration is still open for the Blackfoot language class. She is still hosting the conversation group for English language learners, which meets for coffee on Thursday evenings at Mrs. P’s Coffee Corner.

The barbecue during the open house is free for visitors of Adult Learning, as well as to the school and the parish community.

Fall classes got off to a smooth start this year, and the new location is working out well, Annie says. “People seem to be able to find us, and they’re coming in.”

The first class on Canadian firearms safety filled up and will be repeated, and Hidden Gems, dedicated to finding rocks and fossils, was a big hit.

Developing assets for youth

By Brad Quarin Everyone will have a role in building a healthier community as the 40 Developmental Assets project arrives in Crowsnest Pass, says Parent Link Centre co-ordinator Pauline Desjardins. She is optimistic that the program, which emphasizes creating assets for children, will succeed in making them happier, more responsible adults years from now.

“Children don’t have enough assets,” she says. “The more they have, the less they’ll get involved with high-risk behaviours.”

To get the project going in the Pass, Teck Coal recently presented the 40 Assets steering committee with a donation of $24,000.

The societal ills the project ambitiously aims to alleviate include use of alcohol and drugs, violence, criminal behaviour and graffiti.

The theory states that children aged three to five need family support, adult role models and values of caring, equality and honesty. At ages five to nine, there are added needs of feeling at home in school, reading for fun and learning social interaction.

At ages eight to 12, it’s important to get homework done by the due date and learn to solve differences without violence. At ages 12 to 18, parents and teachers should have high expectations for youth and the youth themselves should be optimistic about their future.

Much of this isn’t shocking. “It is common sense stuff, it’s everyday stuff,” Pauline says. The real challenge would be making this all happen. Questions emerge, such as how to ensure a child has adult role models outside the family.

But Pauline says many children already do, given their teachers, coaches, church leaders and scout leaders. The steering committee intends to talk to all of them about how to better mentor a child and have an impact.

Important goals of the project are developing a child’s desire to find a specialty and interact with others. She says these ends come out of giving children more choices and a sense that they’re valued. The approach leans towards the positive. “If we’re guiding children in the sense that we are saying what they can do, versus always focusing on what they cannot do, we’re

The 40 Assets project has been attempted in other communities in Canada and the United States, and Pauline says the results have been positive.

The process of bringing the project to Crowsnest Pass has already begun. The RCMP, Michael Mertz of Child and Family Services, and Bonita Bourlon, a family-school liaison, had a training session, and Michael also applied to Teck for financial help. Pauline was won over by the program.

In December, 30 people representing groups such as scouts and nurseries attended a Sharing the Asset Message workshop, and were introduced to the program. Deb Whitten took lead of the project, and another workshop, Everybody is an Asset Builder, is planned.

“We’ve got a little bit of meat on the bones,” Pauline says. Now, the funding is a major boost. “We’ll be able to do more.”

Students of Crowsnest Pass were surveyed in May and June to determine what assets they already have, and she says they’ll be surveyed again after the project progresses. No major change is expected instantly, but Pauline hopes to see some positive results in three to five years.
