Sunset silhouette At the end of a work day, this 100-tonne crane creates a beautiful silhouette against a Coleman sunset. The crane was used last week to situate a 10-by-52-foot tank, weighing 10,000 pounds, at First N Last Gas. My Little Corner

This week I’m sharing a story written by my dad – it’s been in my head all week and I simply can’t match his words.

Dad has spent much of his adult life trying to learn more about his father, a veteran of The Suicide Battalion [46th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force] so named because its men fought in so many of the major battles of the First World War. Twice wounded by sniper fire, Stanley Robison also suffered invisible wounds from what he had to do, what he witnessed, experienced and endured in the trenches and on the killing fields of Europe.

He wasn’t able to transition completely back to civilian life after his tour of duty. Over time, keeping his wartime memories locked behind a wall of silence, he became lost to the people who loved him.

My grandfather passed away the year I was born.

No one really spoke of him, so I didn’t ask. I wondered more about him when I was in my 20s and joined the Legion as a way to connect with my father and grandfather.

He, along with every other veteran, and the men and women currently serving, must be remembered.

Not all wounds are from bullets

By Oren Robison Remembrance Day reminds us of so much that was lost — so much that could have been.

Each of us no doubt has some special thoughts, particular memories, associated with Nov. 11. Here’s one of mine — My dad, who was two decades older than Mom, was 56 when I was born. In my youth it always seemed to me that the great disparity in our ages was a barrier of sorts between us. We seldom had discussions.

There was one, though, that for me has proved to be our most memorable attempt to reach out to one another. Invariably, Remembrance Day brings that occasion to mind.

As a child I was aware that Dad was a veteran of the First World War. But I don’t remember him ever speaking about his wartime experience in my presence until one day, when I was nine, I found him sorting through some of his personal effects, alone in a bedroom. It was on Remembrance Day, 1955.

I saw that he was holding some brightlyribboned medals, and started peppering him with questions. He answered as best he could — and even, when I demanded with the persistent naivete of a child that he do so, showed me the silver-dollar-

sized scars where two sniper’s bullets had struck him.

Reluctantly, he told me a little about the horrors of trench warfare.

His eyes misted as he told me how his best friend, peering over the trench’s lip on lookout duty, suddenly fell back, silently, most of his head sheared away by a sniper’s shot.

Then another expression, one I couldn’t comprehend, came into Dad’s eyes. He was sitting at the edge of the bed, leaning forward as though in suffering, elbows resting on his knees.

It was obviously painful to visit that long-ago battlefield.

He looked down at his clenched hands as he told me how he had to steel himself to step up onto the parapet to replace his friend as lookout, his lost buddy sprawled in death practically at his feet.

I was fascinated — and scared, too. I wanted to know everything about it.

Dad was not an educated man, and in the face of my eager questions seemed unable to find the words he needed. He spoke hesitantly, and the signals of torment were there for me to read, easily, even as a child.

“Not all wounds are from bullets,” was his final comment before he took the medals from my hand and put them back into the trunk.

It was a remark I heard him repeat occasionally in ensuing years, but one that was beyond my understanding then.

One Christmas, 20 years after my father’s death, my own son gave me the book And No Birds Sang,

by Farley Mowat. (This book should be compulsory reading in Canadian schools.)

As I read it, that long-ago conversation with Dad resurfaced in my mind.

Mowat’s eloquence was the expression of so much that my dad tried to, but could not, articulate in the one and only conversation he ever allowed himself with me on this subject.

Mowat, and others like him, have tried to purge their souls by sharing their experiences and their pain.

Many more, like my dad, by their silence tried to spare us. In doing so, they became enigmas to their own families.

But as illumination came with the reading, as I began to see my dad in the context of what he had endured, at last the scalding, healing tears of understanding flowed.

Repeat recognition for Alberta SouthWest Alberta SouthWest Regional Alliance won two Marketing Canada Awards at the Economic Developers Association of Canada annual conference, held last month in St. John’s, N.L. The awards honour excellence in community marketing, an integral part of economic development, and Alberta SouthWest was best of the best in two categories: Web-based community outreach and single advertisement.

“Alberta SouthWest is delighted to be recognized at a national level for the second year in a row,” says Bev Thornton, executive director of Alberta SouthWest. “It’s truly amazing what can happen when rural municipalities, towns, villages and business partners put their efforts toward common goals.”

The award for Web-based community outreach recognizes the expertise of the GyPSy Tour Guide company of Banff, in partnership with Alberta SouthWest, in creating new GPS-guided driving tours that offer the fun and exciting experience of driving around the region with a “tour guide in your pocket.”

The finished product contains over 50,000 words of researched content transformed into professional audio narrative, guided by GPS technology, and tells travellers the stories of featured points of interest along 1,400 kilometres of highways and byways in southwestern Alberta. Users can rent GyPSy Guide units at select locations or can download the app from Google Play or the App Store.

The award for single advertisement recognizes the excellent display panel installed in Waterton Lakes National Park, featuring a map of the southwest and inviting park visitors to “Explore More” and visit the interesting communities surrounding the park.

This large project design, completed by Twist Marketing, includes information about the SouthWest Connect wi-fi network, and acknowledges the alliance’s partnerships with GyPSy Tour Guide, Crown of the Continent Geotourism Council, Cowboy Trail and Top Ten Scenic Drives.

Last year, Alberta SouthWest received five Marketing Canada Awards and won the program’s top honour, the EDAC Cup.

A new home for Blairmore Legion

By Brad Quarin Nov. 11 will be a special day for the Blairmore Legion, not only because of Remembrance Day, but also for the opening of its new location.

The latest home for the Legion, a building which formerly housed River Ridge Family Restaurant, was officially purchased on Oct. 1.

The move marks a new chapter in the Blairmore Legion’s history, but the mission remains the same.

“Believe it or not, there’s an awful lot veterans, both old and new, that are in need of financial help, and that’s what the Legion is all about,” says Paul Kenny. He’s been president for three years, having served in the navy from 1957 to 1962.

We all owe a debt to the people who fought for our freedom, many of whom may need a hand with utility and food bills. A non-profit organization, the Legion also supports other groups in the community, giving donations to the air cadets and food bank.

The Blairmore Legion was established 86 years ago, originally located on Main Street.

Thirty years ago, members hired contractors to construct a new building on 129th Street. It was a much larger building, able to host weddings and Crowsnest Pass Idol musical competitions, drawing 200 people.

The Legion had quite the heyday. “Up till about 10 years ago it used to be quite busy,” Mr. Kenny says.

Faith Canderan, who’s been a member for about 35 years, has special memories of the suppers, dances and other functions they held. “If you weren’t there by 6 when there was a function going on, you didn’t get a seat,” she says.

The most recent move will hopefully work out well. “It’s cozier, and the overhead is a lot lower,” Mr. Kenny says.

Currently, the Legion has 165 members, including many veterans, their families and others in the community who support the cause.

The Legion remains a nice place to hang out. “To me, the Legion’s a good place to drink, because you don’t have any rowdy people in,” says Joseph Joseph, a member of the Legion since 1961. “It’s a nice place to bring your friends.”

After the Remembrance Day services at Crowsnest Consolidated High School on Monday, veterans will be able to come to the new location to celebrate and reminisce. The public is welcome.

They won’t be able to serve alcohol yet, but they expect to have their liquor licence soon.

The Blairmore Legion has a future, soon to be mapped out. “We’re still in the process of moving, so there’s a lot of ideas that we’ll have to come up with,” Mr. Kenny says. There will be room in the new building for crib tournaments.

You can have a hand in that future. “Walk in the door, we can use all kinds of volunteers,” he says. Volunteers can help prepare meals and plan events, and membership isn’t required.

$50,000 gift from Teck

By Shannon Parnall Crowsnest Community Support Society is excited to have completed construction of the second affordable housing project in Blairmore for adults with developmental disabilities. This much-needed project is centrally located, providing easy access between houses and the downtown core.

CCSS currently assists 23 adults in Crowsnest Pass, providing vocational and recreational support, and supportive living within the community. The goal is to replace older, outdated houses with safe, accessible housing. The long-range vision is to grow the housing capacity within the community.

The residences are designed to blend attractively with their neighbourhood. The first home, completed in 2012, is a wheelchair-accessible bungalow which provides a safe, supportive environment for up to four individuals, with a staff of two providing 24-hour assistance.

The newly completed second home features two separate suites. The upstairs accommodates three people and the downstairs suite can house two people, with one support staff member in residence on each level. The third home, scheduled for construction in spring 2014, will feature a similar layout.

The cost of each 1,500-square-foot home is about $300,000.

Rent is kept affordable while covering the costs of ongoing upkeep and maintenance. The society operates a workshop where adults with disabilities produce goods for purchase. This provides a source of income and enables clients to be contributing members of the community.

This project is funded through the sale of CCCS-owned property, reserve funds and donations. Teck previously funded the purchase of three generators that will supply emergency power to two houses and the workshop. Last week, Teck presented the society with a $50,000 donation to assist with construction costs for the 2013 and 2014 projects.

The safe, affordable housing project will enhance not only the lives of adults with disabilities, but the entire community of Blairmore.

Crowsnest Pass Air Cadets

By Brad Quarin The story of the Coleman Legion goes back 87 years, making it a firmly entrenched piece of Crowsnest Pass history.

Over the years, it’s undergone various changes and has seen great veterans come and go, secretary-treasurer Debby Greenwood recalls.

It’s still a valuable part of the community. “We’re a community gathering place,” she says. “From Monday to Sunday, people will drop in after work and have a beer, socialize.” Of course, it also still supports its veterans.

The Legion was founded on Oct. 6, 1926, but back then was called the British Empire League and had no home of its own, renting a hall.

Through penny carnivals, campouts, other fundraisers and a lot of community spirit, the Legion raised enough money for its own building in the late 1930s. The current building officially opened on New Year’s Day, 1940.

For many years, men and women were kept separate in the Coleman Legion, with the women confined to the basement, then called “the snake pit,” cooking. In the 1970s, women were finally allowed in the bar.

Debby has been with the Legion for 13 years and recalls some great people, past and present.

Memorable vets include Blondie Poulton, who served in the Second World War and lost his brother in the conflict. Debby recalls Mr. Poulton as fiercely passionate about the Legion, serving on the board and voicing strong opinions. He was admirable, and passed away not long ago.

Another Second World War veteran, Clarence Morrow, is still with us, being the same age as the Legion itself, and has been essential to it. He was president several times, sometimes clashing with Mr. Poulton, but the two respected each other, Debby says.

One longtime member, Ray Schaap, was just a boy living in the Netherlands during the war, but he remembers the Canadians helping liberate the country. He’s still grateful, and Debby finds that touching.

Sadly, most veterans of the Second World War are leaving us, so the Coleman Legion has begun to concentrate more on community service. The basement is no longer a snake pit, now serving as a banquet hall with a commercial kitchen. The banquet hall can fit 120 people.

They’ve had themed dinners there, such as the medieval banquet, and more recently the Halloween banquet, where delicious prime rib was served amid festive decorations. Money raised supports the Legion, including the expenses of the building.

The Coleman Legion also keeps up a presence in the community, participating in parades and Canada Day celebrations.

The Legion can assist when vets have trouble accessing their benefits, and the vet doesn’t need to be a member.

Currently, there are 310 members, and unlike most Legion branches, they’ve actually grown in the past two or three years.

“We’ve been very fortunate that way,” Debby says. Moreover, members seem happy with the Coleman Legion, as few leave unless moving.

If you want to get involved, she says membership costs are affordable, at $34 for seniors and $40 for everyone else. The application gauges how involved the potential member wishes to be. Help is needed with the poppy campaign, the kitchen and building maintenance. Simply patronizing the bar also helps.

For now, they’re focusing on Remembrance Day, and Legion elections will be held this month.

By Brad Quarin This year, Pincher Creek’s Friends of the Library proved to be friends not only to their local library but also to the troubled High River Public Library.

The group’s annual fall book sale raised $2,200 that was divided evenly between the local public library and another that’s faced challenges due to the floods of June.

Deb Gardiner of the High River library appreciates it. “We also know that each donation comes with a lot of goodwill and caring,” she says. “The library community has been very caring.”

Friends of the Library is a group of volunteers who hold fundraisers for the Pincher Creek library, to pay for nice things such as furniture or special books.

There are about eight or 10 members, who are all avid readers. “We have the most amazing volunteers,” says Karen Graham of the group. “All are enthusiastic and smiling and eager.”

Those volunteers helped sell many used books this year, cleared out from the library or donated by others in the community.

Pincher Creek has readers with interesting

tastes, Karen says, leading to quite a variety of books in the sale. These included mystery, romance, westerns, children’s, travel, cooking and self-help books.

The books were inexpensive, and there were some big tips when locals heard half of the proceeds were going to High River.

In Pincher Creek, the public library was recently remodelled, and Karen finds the changes beautiful and the library more multifunctional.

Money from the book sale may help with adding new furniture or shelves to complement the renovations.

In High River, the library was impacted by flooding that damaged the carpet and walls.

Cleanup is required, and the books were moved to sea cans. It’s not known if the books are damaged.

“We are guardedly hopeful,” Deb says.

Karen says the High River library did not ask for this help, but that Janice Day of the Pincher Creek library knew of their plight.

“Thank you to all the people who worked the sale, bought at the sale, and spread the word about the sale,” Deb says. “Our community is very grateful for your caring and your donation.”

A bracelet can save a child’s life

By Brad Quarin For students with medical needs, a bracelet can be a lifesaver.

Medical ID bracelets are worn to tell paramedics and first responders what to do in case of an emergency, if the student is unable to tell them.

The bracelets are expensive, and that’s where the Pincher-Cowley Roaring Lions stepped in.

“Children who need them, get them,” says Olga Bruder, president of the Roaring Lions.

They’ve been supporting the program for three years, with the bracelets coming from Medic Alert, a charity in Ontario.

It started in Pincher Creek when the Roaring Lions received a letter from Medic Alert about the program and how it can help children with allergies or medical conditions.

“We can pick our charities and our events that mean a lot to us,” Olga says. Related to the Lions Club, the Pincher-Cowley Roaring Lions started as a women’s service club. Men can now join, but they haven’t recruited any and still choose causes important to women. In this case, the appeal of the Medic Alert program was keeping kids safe.

The Roaring Lions donated about $1,500 to bring the bracelets to Pincher Creek, enough for about 10 bracelets. They chose St. Michael’s School as the place to distribute them, but students at other schools are eligible to apply.

Olga believes there are currently four brace-

lets being worn in Pincher Creek. “We have six or seven spaces yet for students,” she says. “If they need help, the money is there.”

Due to medical confidentiality, the Roaring Lions don’t know who the four students who have bracelets are or what information they contain.

What they do know is that the small, silver bracelets with red crosses on them have numbers first responders can call to access the child’s file.

If your child needs one, you can stop by St. Michael’s School to apply, and detail the child’s needs in a questionnaire.

Olga has been in the Pincher-Cowley Roaring Lions for 17 years. She and her husband, Eric, were looking for volunteer work after their children grew up, and Olga saw and liked what the Roaring Lions did. Eric, who loves snowmobiling and riding quads, is now in search and rescue.

The Roaring Lions support a variety of causes, including the Care Bears, driving for seniors and disabled people who can’t drive themselves, and Meals on Wheels. They also put together hygiene kits for the women’s shelter.

There are currently 32 members of the Roaring Lions, and they want to recruit more.

It’s satisfying to make a difference, and you make friends in the club, Olga says. There aren’t any age requirements to join. They meet on the second Thursday of every month.

Sunday run day Jody Peebles gives Ashes a lift after the dog lost a couple of boots on their Sunday run. The Portuguese water dog has webbed feet and lots of foot hair, which led to ice balls forming from the sticky snow. Members of Jody’s group took turns carrying the dog for an hour – it doesn’t appear that either Jody or Ashes minded.

Past, present and future of P.C. Legion

By Brad Quarin Located at 691 Main St., the building housing the Pincher Creek Legion, busy observing Remembrance Day this month, is over 100 years old.

It was founded as a mercantile building by the Lebel family. Later, the cinder block exterior survived a fire, while the inside had to be rebuilt. The three-storey building became two storeys, says Ed Rouleau, a Legion member who retired from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police 27 years ago. Mr. Rouleau can remember going to Cubs meetings on the second floor over 60 years ago.

The Legion itself is only a little younger, having celebrated its 85th anniversary last year with a formal dinner and informal beer garden.

It has a glorious past, Mr. Rouleau and Legion president Dick Waywood recall. In the 1970s and 1980s, the branch had many members, and people waited in lines to come in on weekends.

“There was a cover charge on Saturday nights, and you had to be here at 7:30 – otherwise, you didn’t get in,” Mr. Waywood says. It was an opportunity for him and his wife to socialize with others.

For a while, the Legion had troubles, but Mr. Waywood and Mr. Rouleau feel these are better times. The Legion still holds an important place in Pincher Creek.

with the financial donations they do,” says Norm Walker. Having served in the military for 17 years, touring the Middle East, he is now a Legion member long active in the poppy campaign.

The money raised from the poppy campaign goes to assist the veterans, Mr. Rouleau notes.

“Really and truly, the money from the poppy fund is community money.”

They’ve had emergency funds to help impoverished veterans, and some veterans in Canada are homeless, Mr. Walker says. Mr. Waywood adds they’ve even given money to vets who come in needing funds for bus fare.

Other causes they’ve supported include Care Bears, Crestview Lodge, Vista Village and buying equipment for the local hospital.

At Christmastime, the Legion puts together a list of the disadvantaged and supplies hampers of food and gifts for children.

Currently, there are almost 500 members, and if you sign up by the end of the month you have a chance to win a free membership in a draw.

Members don’t have to be from Pincher Creek.

Mr. Walker is from Cowley, and there are members in Edmonton and British Columbia.

Recent history has been highlighted by the organization’s 85th anniversary celebration in 2012 and renovations to the building over the last two years.

included a dinner and children’s games, with so many in attendance that the party was moved to the Community Hall. It’s a special memory for Mr. Rouleau and other members.

More recently, the kitchen and flooring were renovated and a new steak pit was added. The ribbon for the elevator was cut in February during a public ceremony, after the Legion had raised the required $225,000. This has really helped catering upstairs.

Now, the Legion is preparing for Remembrance Day. It’s a huge deal in Pincher Creek, with a lot of participation from the schools and about 400 people of all ages going to the main service. On Monday, it will start with the parade at the Community Hall at 10:50 a.m., followed by prayer and the laying of wreaths.

Mr. Walker says the branch has only four or five “modern-day veterans” who have served in peacekeeping or in Afghanistan. Young veterans may be reluctant to join the Legion, but Mr. Walker feels they’re important representatives for the organization.

To join, you can fill out the form indicating what you’re interested in doing. Any Canadian of good standing can help with catering, the games or the youth programs.

Taste the art of chocolate

By Brad Quarin Supporting Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery will be sweet in more ways than one when the Allied Arts Association celebrates the Art of Chocolate on Nov. 14.

The event, taking place at the gallery in Frank, marks a delicious start to the community’s Christmas in the Mountains, a weekend of shopping, a parade and decoration contests.

This is the first Art of Chocolate fundraiser, which Allied Arts managing director Krisztina Wood hopes will become an annual event.

Bearing some resemblance to the Taste of Crowsnest Pass festival during Rum Runner Days, the Art of Chocolate focuses more on dessert, namely chocolatey treats and wine.

Different businesses will bring a chocolate-themed dessert, such as chocolate cake, available for sampling by ticket holders. Those sweets will be made by Country Encounters, Bamboo Bistro, Blackbird Coffee House, Crowsnest Cafe and Fly Shop, Stone’s Throw Cafe, Cinnamon Bear and Side Trax.

Allied Arts also approached Frank Liquor to supply the wine, figuring it would go well with dessert, after many of the patrons have eaten supper.

The idea for the event was hatched by Kari Lehr, a local artist serving as the fundraiser’s co-ordinator. The event is intended not only as a fundraiser, but as something the community as a whole can enjoy.

Advance tickets, sold at the gallery, Stone’s Throw and Frank Liquor, are $25, while a ticket at the door costs $30. The small fee gets you 15 food tickets to obtain wine and desserts, and each additional ticket costs $1.

The money will support the art gallery’s programming, including educational workshops for adults, summer classes for children and bringing in new exhibits. Anything left over may also help with desired renovations to the gallery, such as a new entry door and repainting.

The event runs from 7 to 10 p.m.

Poppy facts * During the Napoleonic Wars, the poppy drew attention as the mysterious flower that bloomed over the graves of fallen soldiers. * In the 20th century, the poppy again was widely noticed after soils in France and Belgium became rich in lime from rubble during the First World War. The little red flowers flourished around the graves of the war dead, as they had 100 years earlier. *In 1915, Ontario-born John McCrae, a doctor serving with the Canadian Artillery, recorded this phenomenon in his famous poem “In Flanders Fields.” * Two days before the armistice, Moina Michael, an American woman, read the McCrae poem and was inspired to wear a poppy year-round in memory of the war dead. * In 1920, Madame E. Guérin of France visited the United States and happened to meet Miss Michael at the YMCA at Columbia University, where the latter was a volunteer. Madame Guérin then resolved to sell handmade poppies around Armistice Day to raise money for poor children in war-torn areas of Europe. * In 1921, Field Marshal Earl Haig, the former commander-in-chief of the British Armies in France and Belgium and the principal founder of the British Legion, was sold on Madame Guérin’s fundraising idea and approved organization of the British Poppy Day appeal by the Legion to raise money for poor and disabled veterans. * The same year, Madame Guérin visited Canada and convinced the Great War Veterans Association of Canada (predecessor to the Royal Canadian Legion) to similarly adopt the poppy as a symbol of remembrance in aid of fundraising. * Today, the poppy campaign is one of the Royal Canadian Legion’s most important programs. Money raised from donations to the campaign provides direct assistance for veterans in financial distress, as well as funding for medical appliances and research, home services, care facilities and numerous other purposes.

It all started with a letter

By Shannon Robin Letters written between soldiers and loved ones during wartime give us glimpses of the life they knew, and what was endured by both the enlisted men and women and their families back home. As time passes by and veterans pass on, memories fade and many stories of sacrifice and triumph are being lost.

Willie Chorney of Coleman has shared this letter in honour of her great-uncle, Robert Clayton Hicks. It was found among her father’s things after he passed away, and has led to an interesting journey of reconnecting with relatives as she has learned more about a man she knew nothing of.

The letter is very faded, and a magnifying glass was used to read the old type. Willie assumes that her father was, as she is now, trying to learn more about his uncle.

Clayton was born May 28, 1890 in Brockville, Ont. At some point, he moved to Medicine Hat. Willie found it interesting to learn Clayton enlisted in the Canadian military at Pincher Creek.

According to his statement of service, he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force in the 13th Canadian Mounted Rifles on Feb. 1, 1915. Left at home to await his return were his wife, Jean, and their young children, Beryl and Angus.

Soldier information from the Canadian Great War Project indicates that Clayton’s original overseas unit was the 13th Canadian Mounted Rifles. He joined Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in the field in September 1916 and was invalided, suffering from shell shock, the following month. He was struck off strength in January 1918 from the Royal Air Force as lieutenant and attached to General Headquarters later the same year.

According to the Canadian War Museum website, shell shock was a blanket term applied to soldiers who broke down under the strain of war. In his letter, Clayton mentions his medical status at the time. Soldiers classified as B2 were men who were fit for base units of the medical service, garrison or regimental outdoor duty, while those classed as B3 were men capable of sedentary work, such as clerks.

In his letter, Clayton explains the series of events that led to his shell shock. Imagine yourself in his shoes, earning about 60 cents a day for your military service.

He served with the Royal Air Force in Canada, Britain and France and was honourably discharged on Jan. 24, 1919 at the rank of lance corporal. His discharge certificate describes him as 28 years, seven months in age, five feet eight inches in height, and of fair complexion with grey eyes and light brown hair.

Your loving brother, Clayton Through her quest to learn more about a family member, Willie has taken a journey that has connected her with cousins Terry and Judy she has seen only a few times in the last 50 years. “It’s really nice for my mom to have this connection and she’s quite excited about it,” Willie says.

While Willie hasn’t learned much about his life after the war, it appears Clayton remained in Medicine Hat, passing away on Oct. 23, 1965. She and her cousins will continue researching to learn more about Clayton’s life after he returned to Canada.

Willie’s father’s second name is Clayton, and her brother is Clayton as well.

Willie was born on Nov. 11, and her paternal grandmother, Wilma (recipient of the letter), died at the young age of 35 on the same day in 1929.

Despite name associations that suggest tributes and coincidences, Willie was unaware of Clayton Hicks and his role in the First World War. Her father and aunt, who would have been able to answer her questions, have both passed on.

Clayton’s written words were important enough to be treasured and saved, and important enough to share and remember. A message from Terry closes by saying, “Thank you Robert Clayton Hicks for bringing us all together.”

And thank you, Willie, for sharing his story.

Film festival focuses on Korean War

Ready for goblins J0-Ann Paulsen and fellow residents of Whispering Winds were busy preparing for Halloween visitors last week.

By Vicki Arndt Honouring the 60th anniversary of the Korean War armistice on July 27, 2013, and the 516 Canadians who made the ultimate sacrifice during this war, the Empress Theatre presents the fourth annual Canadian Forces Memorial Film Festival in Fort Macleod.

The highly animated and knowledgeable Stéphane Guevremont, Mount Royal University teacher of military history who holds a PhD in Canadian military aviation, returns as master of ceremonies for the festival, running this Friday to Sunday.

“This festival holds special meaning for the Empress Theatre board of directors,” says festival organizer Sebastian David. His son Patrick David, warrant officer with the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command, will present the short film Special Forces 20th Anniversary Climb of Mt. Logan at the event.

The festival also includes four feature films, along with the The Belgian Forest, presented

by Karl Kjarsgaard, director of the Bomber Command Museum of Canada and international pilot, who led the salvage of a wrecked Halifax bomber whose aluminum became the ceiling of the Bomber Command Memorial in England.

Canadian veteran Don Dalke, along with Stéphane Guevremont, will lead discussions regarding Canada’s involvement in the Korean War and the history and events of the war.

The festival concludes on Monday, Remembrance Day, with the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual ceremonies. The march begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Legion, and the hour-long ceremony starts at 11 at Fort Macleod and District Community Hall.

A&B Liquor Store turns 20

By Brad Quarin Spirits are high as A&B Liquor Store celebrates 20 years of business in Crowsnest Pass.

The store, which sells beer, wine, coolers, spirits and giftware, boasts “a real family feel” and “a huge selection,” says manager Cathy Thomas.

“Customer service is awesome here,” she adds.

She says they receive plenty of positive feedback on their service, prices and the gift baskets of products they put together upon customer request. “The staff always go out of their way to help somebody find a product or see if they want it cold.”

To mark their anniversary, free tastings will he offered at the store on Fridays and Saturdays throughout November and December. There will also be promotional draws held at A&B during the two months, and numerous weekly specials and giveaways. On Nov. 22, Mountain Radio will broadcast from the store.

There’s much to celebrate. The store has frequent promotions and sponsors various things in the community, including the Sole Survivor and Sinister 7 races.

They’ve also supported golf tournaments, the Ricky Ryp Foundation and numerous other organizations. Usually, people approach the store looking for support, and the store decides how they can help the cause, Cathy says. Their donations are usually in the form of baskets, products or discounts. “We’re proud of all of them,” Cathy says of the sponsorships.

For selection, the store offers new products on a weekly basis, and they usually have products free to sample on Saturdays in the afternoon.

The A&B story began in downtown Coleman in December 1993, when brothers Adrian and Beric Fabro took over what had been an Alberta Liquor Control Board store.

The Fabro brothers were coal miners, and when the mine shut down they found a new career, made available when the Alberta government privatized the liquor business, Adrian recalls.

Since then, the location has changed, as they moved into a new, larger building in 2003, to be in a more highly trafficked area. Sales are better, and customers from outside Crowsnest Pass now patronize it, he says.

A highlight came in 2011, when Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce named the store business of the year.

“I think it comes down to the customerservice atmosphere and the community support that was given,” Cathy says. She hadn’t been at the store long at the time, but receiving the award felt fantastic.

She’s also excited about the anniversary of the store, and says Adrian is proud of the milestone.

For the future, Adrian wants to keep up the store’s commitment to community service.

“We always want to see growth,” Cathy says.

“We want to keep things changing.”
