My Little Corner Many kids grow up wishing for a room of their own – I was one of them.

I was the monkey in the middle, with an older brother and a younger sister.

For the most part, we got along pretty well.

There were times when two ganged up on one, times when we all did our own thing, and even times when we all happened to be on the same page at the same time.

No matter where we were at with each other, there was one thing I always dreamed of, and that was a bedroom of my own.

For a brief period of time, when I was in elementary school, I had my own room. For my birthday I was allowed to pick a pretty blue bedspread with matching curtains. There was even a giraffe painted on the wall by the previous tenants.

This was the big leagues for a little girl!

After only a few sleeps, I had to give up my precious space. My parents hired a new pressman, and he stayed with us until his summer wedding.

I don’t remember how long Dave was actually there, but for this encroachment on my space I hated him as much as a 10-year-old could.

Eventually I grew up and got over it, and we’ve chuckled about the story more than once.

This bedroom was mine for about a year, then we moved and Marcy and I were back in one room.

At least it was a great big room, with interesting features like dormer windows, in the old house our parents had purchased.

We survived our teenage years together, but I’m certain she longed for her own space as badly as I did.

As children we had fun times in small rooms where the red bedspreads covered mountains in a kingdom for our stuffed animals, and jumping from one bed to another and using the swag lamp cord as a trapeze were medal-worthy sports. As most girls do, we also had fights and argued over the cramped closet space as we got older.

We made do, and both appreciated our own personal space when it was finally afforded us.

We’ve been in a similar boat with Shootin’ the Breeze. While fortunate to have commercial space right from Day 1, my business and my staff have been somewhat invisible. To get to us, you needed to find the office of Robin & Co. Chartered

Accountant (my husband’s business) and be directed through to the back. We didn’t have a sign to indicate our presence on Main Street.

This was just fine when we were younger and sometimes the phone didn’t ring for days at a time.

But, just like kids, we started growing. My staff of one grew to six employees working a combination of full- and part-time hours. And, just like kids, we sometimes found ourselves in one another’s space.

About six months ago, I moved from the large, open space we all shared to a room of my own.

Quiet days at the office had become a thing of the past, and it was valuable to have the option to close the door when necessary.

At the same time, I had my eye on another door. Our building has a second front door and I dreamed of how much easier things would be for everyone in both businesses if there was defined space for the Breeze.

My husband was hesitant. As he insisted any good businessman should, he hoped for a renter who was interested in the entire space. We talked about “trying it” but he knew it would be an issue if I moved in and a month later the perfect renter came along. Although I didn’t like his answer, he was making a good choice – he knew the story of Dave moving in on my bedroom 35 years ago.

Growth has continued, and Dennis agrees it’s time for the Breeze to get not only its own room, but also its own front door and a sign.

We’ve been busy painting, cleaning and moving furniture, and that door is now open. The sign will be coming soon. You can find us right next to the Legion on Main Street (697A), and you’re welcome to drop in any time between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Since opening the door last week, we’ve had people come by with contest entries, ads, stories, ideas and kind words.

This gives us the opportunity to serve our readers and clients better and to properly promote the custom printing services we offer.

We’re excited to have grown up enough to earn our own space, and can’t thank Barb, Janet, Leslie, Shelly and Tiare enough for the support they’ve given as our customers passed through Robin & Co.’s door.

We hope you’ll drop in to shoot the breeze.

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the closure of Westwind Interiors in Pincher Creek, effective Nov. 30. Our land and building have been purchased by another business in Pincher Creek, and they require us to move by the end of the month to start renovations inside.

Pincher Creek has been our home since February 1995, and we opened our doors two months later. Mona Bruns of Sleepy Hollow Campground was our first customer.

We had a dream to live here and were able to realize that dream by creating our own jobs and moving here. Over the years, we have had many challenges and successes that have gotten us to this point where an opportunity to make a change is possible.

Laura and I were not looking to close our store at any point, so this offer came as a surprise to us and our family. However, after long consideration, we decided it best that we just close out.

Pincher Creek is home for us. Both of our beautiful daughters were born here. We intend to stay and maintain community involvement however we can. We really don’t know what the future holds, and look forward to where it takes us.

Thank you to all of our customers. Without the support of the community, this business never would have worked. Thank you to our friends and family who have supported us in different ways that got us through the weird stuff!

Thank you to our vendors that have offered their support over the years. And a special thank you to our staff who have been with us over the years. We have a great team right now and it’s sad to lose them. We wish them all the best in their next endeavours.

Again, thank you, Pincher Creek. It’s been almost 19 years since we opened our doors. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Jam-packed weekend planned for Christmas in the Mountains With snow on the mountaintops and on the ground, people are starting to think about Christmas. In Crowsnest Pass, a busy group of people have had Christmas on their minds for months now in preparation for the first Christmas in the Mountains full-weekend event.

An evening of shopping and activities in November is not new in itself. It’s been known as Moonlight Madness and Crowsnest Christmas. The one-night event has even been known as Christmas in the Mountains, and organizers feel it best suits the new three-day format, so have gone back to this name.

Things kick off tomorrow with The Art of Chocolate, presented by Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery. If sweet treats accompanied by a glass of wine and live music by Tynan Groves appeal to your appetite, you can get your tickets at the gallery.

An official light-up will take place Friday at dusk at the gazebo park on Main Street in Blairmore. You can enjoy the songs of the carollers as you enjoy hot chocolate by the fire.

Many businesses are offering red-and-white sales with fantastic discounts.

You’ll be able to shop until 10 p.m. Friday at many stores and save on your Christmas shopping. Don’t forget to check out the restaurants offering special deals as well.

On Friday you can have your pet photographed with Santa at Sears from noon until 4 p.m., thanks to Bellevue Veterinary Clinic, learn more about the Grassy Mountain Project at an open house at Riversdale Resources from 5 to 8 p.m. and pick up some baking from the sale at Old Crow in Blairmore from 6 to 10 p.m.

Mountain Radio will broadcast live from downtown Friday night and you might be lucky enough to win a free turkey in the turkey trotter event.

A Christmas parade will make its way through downtown Blairmore Saturday morning at 11. Kids can drop by the chamber office Saturday to get their faces painted as well.

You can take in the kids’ scavenger hunt in Bellevue on Saturday afternoon between 1 and 5 p.m., learn about the CrowSnow Riders at their membership drive in Blairmore (near Gazebo Park) from 10:30 am. to 1:30 p.m., have Katalily Photography take your picture with Santa at Gazebo Park in Blairmore at 11 a.m., go skating for free at the Sportsplex from noon to 4 p.m., or join in a game of street hockey in downtown Coleman at 1 p.m.

Plan to take in the Community Spirit Christmas Dance in Bellevue Saturday night at 8. Put on your dancing shoes and enjoy Metrobeat from Calgary. Tickets are $20 per person and available at the chamber office.

Complimentary bus rides home between 10:30 p.m. and 2:30 a.m. are a nice touch, and the evening is sponsored by Teck Coal.

Bonnie’s Fashions and Work N Play are holding a tea and fashion show at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish on Sunday afternoon. Tickets are $15. If you didn’t have time to get to the rink Saturday, free public skating is offered again Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All weekend long you can enjoy discounted tours of Bellevue Underground Mine and drop-in art classes with Tracey-Mae Chambers at Gushul Studio.

Crowsnest Pass residents are encouraged to join in the fun of a decorating contest sponsored by Servus Credit Union. Owners of the best-lit home will receive $500 cash, second place is $250 cash and third place is a $100 gift certificate for your utility bill. Winners are determined by public vote, so pick up a map from the chamber office or take a bus tour before making your choice.

To have your home judged, pick up an application from Servus Credit Union in Coleman or at the chamber office.

There are no worries about getting from Point A to Point B this week, as free transportation between Bellevue, Blairmore, Coleman, Frank and Hillcrest is offered by the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass and the Town Rounder.

Many clubs and organizations have partnered with the Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce to put on their own events during the weekend. The best way to keep up with events as they are added and finalized is to watch the Christmas in the Mountains page on Facebook. Detailed brochures are also available from the chamber office and participating businesses.

Those coming from out of town can take advantage of a package that includes accommodation and dance tickets.

“There will be more happening than you can shake a stick at,” says organizer Bonnie Harry. “Every community is involved, and there’s something for everyone.”

New year for Chinook 4-H Multi Club

Saiya, who met Claira met through a play group, hopes the cards will help and said, “Maybe when she wakes up she won’t be sick.”

A craft and bake sale was held Saturday in Hillcrest as a fundraiser for the Murray family. What started as a small idea among family friends raised over $9,000 to help with Claira’s medical expenses.

Friends, family and strangers donated baked goods, crafts, silent auction items, services such as face painting and balloon-animal making, and cash. The response was heartwarming and the hall was bustling all day with those wishing Claira well. Well done, everyone!

By Justin Nelson At our first meeting of Chinook 4-H Multi Club’s new year we saw some new faces.

We have a new executive which consists of our new president, Jillanna Hammond, vice-president Brooke Hammond, secretary Jaxon Hammond, treasurer Taylor Deley, historians Shawn Hammond and Logan Deley, reporter Justin Nelson, district rep Cadence Sinnott and alternate Justin Nelson.

Our new general leader is Myra Hammond, who last year was an assistant leader. Assistant leaders are Jeremy Nelson, who came back for another year, and Dixon Hammond.

Projects we are doing this year are as follows: Swine is a club where you learn to feed and care for a pig to make it market-ready and at achievement day you get to sell it. Small engines is where you learn about engines and the dangers of them, and you also get to fix a small engine. Poultry is where you learn about and raise a chicken. Shooting sports is where you learn about safety with guns and get to shoot them. We are looking at a money matters/ entrepreneur project, with details yet to come.

The Breeze Mailbox Ted Menzies looks forward to a new career These past 9½ years have been an incredible experience for me as your member of Parliament. However, the time has come for me to move on.

I wish to thank all of the constituents of the Macleod riding for your support over the years. This role has given me an opportunity that is afforded to only a few. My wife, Sandy, and I have made so many new friends and gotten to know so many people that we may never have met otherwise, despite the fact that they might live in just the next town.

You have shared stories about your lives, invited us into your homes and helped guide me over these years. And I thank you all for that.

Many of you will know that I never intended to be a career politician and, as I said earlier this year, the severe flooding in southern Alberta was a vivid reminder of why I chose to stand for election in 2004 – to serve the constituents of Macleod. Stepping down from my ministerial duties in July allowed me time this summer to play a small part in helping those affected, and just be there for my constituents.

Thank you to all who supported and campaigned for me, those dedicated volunteers from across the riding who sat on my advisory board, my amazing staff: Wanda Sommerfeldt, Rachelle MacDonald, Brenda Whitehead and Brooke de Waal, and most of all, my family.

I could not have done this alone! Thank you to my wonderful wife, Sandy, for her love and understanding.

I am retiring from politics but look forward to another exciting career ahead.

Thank you all for the opportunity to proudly represent the most beautiful riding in Canada, and for the privilege to represent some of the greatest people I will ever know.

Hospital auxiliary continues its good works

By Brad Quarin You may not be familiar with the Crowsnest Pass Hospital Auxiliary, but they’ve been a force for good at the health centre.

This Friday, they’re keeping up the good work with their craft and bake sale and setting up the Tree of Hope.

“We have a few fundraisers through the year to donate to extended care or acute care,” says Margaret Ann Woodward, who leads the auxiliary.

Margaret, who’s been a member for 10 years, is one of 15 ladies currently in the auxiliary, mostly seniors. However, they are open to men and young people who’d be interested in joining. It is entirely volunteer work.

The group has existed for over 60 years and has made plenty of contributions to the hospital since June. Through their fundraisers, they were able to buy two recliners for extended care and four TVs for the community support room, where a caregiver can drop a patient off for a few days. They bought another TV for a sitting room. For the bathrooms, they bought shower curtains and replaced the old shelves with metal ones.

Their money is raised partly through the tuck shop, where they sell chocolates and chips, but the knitting and sewing available there is where most of the profit lies. They try to keep it open in the morning, afternoon and evening.

The craft and bake sales are also a big help, with the next one taking place on Friday at the Blairmore Elks Hall. Margaret bakes plenty for these sales, mainly butterhorns, and other ladies in the auxiliary are known for their lemon pies, cookies and cakes, and for their afghans, slippers and toques. They’ll also be selling Tree of Hope balls for $5 at the Elks Hall and tuck shop.

The Tree of Hope, to be set up in the hospital lobby on Dec. 3, is decorated with Christmas balls. Each ornament is marked with the name of a dearly departed person the buyer wishes to memorialize. The Tree of Hope has been a tradition for many years, and typically 60 or 75 balls are sold.

The auxiliary is also making Christmas stockings – filled with combs, toothbrushes and candy – for acute care patients.

Margaret says the auxiliary is looking for more members, more people to work at the tuck shop and more donations. She joined the auxiliary herself knowing they needed volunteers, and her mother was in the nursing home at the time.

Sinister 7 honoured for sustainable tourism

By Brad Quarin Sinister 7 organizers Andrew Fairhurst and Brian Gallant have had much success with their ultramarathon, which draws much attention to Crowsnest Pass. There is no shortage of runners who want to take on the immense challenge of the race amidst our area’s natural beauty.

Alberta Tourism has taken notice, too, and this year presented Brian and Andrew with their first Alto Award, honouring the best of Alberta tourism, specifically for sustainable tourism.

“It was quite an honour to win the award. We were quite shocked,” Andrew says. “It not only recognizes our company and the efforts we put in, it also recognizes the community we live in.”

Along with their wives, they both attended the impressive awards gala last week. There were about 700 people there, making it one of the largest tourism galas in the country.

They had been nominated for sustainable tourism for a second year and were also nominated for the Alberta Pride award, given for capturing the “Alberta experience.”

“We were up against really stiff competition in both categories,” Andrew says.

The sustainable tourism award is given for tourism promoting the community’s environment and cultural heritage.

“We do take a lot of steps to run a sustainable event,” Brian says. Every year, they look at their practices to determine what they can do to be environmentally sound.

In co-operation with Sustainable Resource Development, they also make sure to take down the signs and ribbons put up in the forest for the marathon.

Brian and Andrew’s company, Full Moon Adventure, enjoyed the support of other local businesses who wrote letters to Alberta Tourism about Sinister 7’s cultural importance.

“The letters said what a boost it is to the community and how much pride people here take in

the event,” Brian says. The letters were written by Crowsnest Pass Holiday Homes, Stone’s Throw Cafe and Ryan Peebles, coach of the high school running team.

This led Andrew and Brian to the Alto Awards gala, where they had a fancy dinner and saw native dancers from southern Alberta. The keynote speaker was Quinton Crow Shoe of HeadSmashed-In Buffalo Jump. This was basically Full Moon Adventure’s “Christmas party.”

The Alberta Pride award went to the Canadian Badlands Passion Play, a Drumheller production about Jesus. “I’ve heard many good things about it,” Andrew says, though neither he nor Brian has seen it.

Simply being nominated was an honour, and they received a plaque indicating they were finalists.

Upon winning the sustainable tourism award, they were able to shake hands with Tourism Minister Richard Starke and Pat Thomsen of Parks Canada. There was no time for thank-you speeches.

The win means they can’t apply for the sustainable tourism Alto Award for some time, but Brian says they intend to apply again for Alberta Pride.

The sustainable tourism award is one trophy, and Full Moon Adventure doesn’t have a central office, so Brian and Andrew keep swapping it.

The Sinister 7 race goes into its seventh year next summer, with “sinners” able to take on the new 161-kilometre course.

An intro to B2B bartering

By Brad Quarin A luncheon next Wednesday for members of Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce and others in the community will be a unique opportunity to learn about businessto-business bartering.

While food is served at Heritage Inn, Terri Lorrain will speak about the possibility of introducing this form of business networking to Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass.

“We’ve got to come together as a business community,” she says. “The premise is to help each other, to promote each other.”

Business-to-business – or B2B – bartering, involves exchanging goods and services rather than money.

The fact that no money is involved is key.

“The purpose of the bartering network is to enable business owners to hang on to their cash.” This, in turn, can save new or troubled businesses, and the whole community benefits from the services they offer.

“This is how cavemen did business,” Terri says, but the practice fell out of favour after business owners lost trust in each other.

Recently, there’s been an effort to resurrect B2B bartering, with networks arising to organize it, taking a commission. One such network in Winnipeg connects 500 large companies.

However, Crowsnest Pass and Pincher Creek have no such network.

“If there is an interest, I am more than willing to set it up and run it,” she says.

Terri and Ruth Skene-Reedyk are co-owners of the local business Stop at the Office, launched last September during the Pincher Creek Trade Show. Serving Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass, the business provides office support for clients, consisting of bookkeeping, developing websites, payroll and human resources.

“We recognized a need in this area,” Terri says, and she and Ruth have a lot of experience in office management. They run the business from their homes in Pincher Creek and Burmis, respectively.

Terri approached the chamber of commerce about presenting at the luncheon. “I have this weird sickness – I really, really love public speaking,” she says. She got to do a lot of it when Crowsnest Pass became the Pinkest Little Town in the West in 2011, in an effort to support breast cancer research.

Her presentation will be kept simple, probably involving only 15 minutes of talking with minimal visuals, and Ruth will have handouts.

They hope there will be many questions to answer.

The presentation is aimed at owners of all kinds of businesses, big and small.

The luncheon will he held from 11:45 a.m. to 1, and costs $15 for chamber members and $18 for everyone else. RSVP by calling 403-627-5199.

Christmas season begins with Moonlight Madness

By Brad Quarin The good thing about the arrival of Jack Frost is knowing that Santa Claus is soon to follow.

He’ll be making an appearance in Pincher Creek during the community’s annual Parade of Lights, amid other entertainment and Moonlight Madness on Friday. The event kicks off the Christmas season, not to mention Christmas shopping.

Various businesses are participating by extending their hours and offering special sales, says Lieve Parisis, Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce administrator.

Most stores taking part are open until 9 p.m., with a few exceptions. Outdoor Outlet’s doors are open until 8, while Ruffles Boutique is running until 10.

Encouraged by the chamber, at least eight businesses are offering sales. Ruffles will have 10-per-cent discounts throughout the day, 25 per

cent off tops from 7 to 8 p.m. and 25 per cent off bottoms from 8 to 9. From 9 to 10, all home decor will be 20 per cent off.

Blackburn Jewellers is offering many sales on jewelry, with discounts ranging from 10 to 60 per cent, while The Brick has savings up to 75 per cent.

Home businesses and artisans will have an opportunity to sell their crafts and baking at Ranchland Mall from 3 to 8 p.m. At the mall, children can make their own crafts with PlayMais material, starting at 7 p.m.

Shoppers and families can also look forward to free entertainment during the day, and the Parade of Lights, which starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Ranchland Mall parking lot and ends at Subway on Main Street.

The chamber, which organizes the spectacle, calls for decorated floats from businesses and groups, with the first registered including the fig-

ure skating and 4-H clubs. Naturally, the parade’s last vehicle, a fire truck, will be carrying Jolly Old St. Nick.

Before then, families can see Santa on the big screen when Fox Theatre shows the movie Rise of the Guardians for free at 3, thanks to the theatre and YPM Chartered Accountants.

There will also be free swimming at the Pincher Creek pool for an hour, starting at 5 p.m., sponsored by TransAlta.

At the Shootin’ the Breeze office on Main Street, we’re holding a fun photo shoot. Budding photographer Jaiden Panchyshyn will be taking Christmas pictures of visitors for a nominal fee from 6 to 9 p.m. This will support her upcoming trip to Scotland with the Skye-Anna School of Highland Dance.

Answers 1. She was 14 and met Elvis when she and her military family were stationed in Germany in 1959. Their Las Vegas wedding wasn’t until 1967.

2. “Dandelion,” released in 1967. Once it came to the U.S., the song became the a-side with “We Love You” falling flat on the charts.

3. Cliff Richards, followed by the Beach Boys in 1965.

4. “The Air That I Breathe.” Radiohead was sued in the 1990s for lifting the melody.

5. “Sultans of Swing,” by Dire Straits in 1978, with a re-release the following year.
