My Little Corner Even in these days of instant online gratification, there are print catalogues that put smiles on people’s faces and ideas into children’s heads as they dream of Christmas.

The arrival of the annual Christmas Wish Book from Sears was a big deal when I was young and still is a good browse today, not only for the content, but also for the memories it stirs up.

The dog-eared catalogues lasted from one year to the next, with corners turned down to show everyone’s top picks and even some handwritten notes and pleas. The sentiments held within the well-worn pages each year were priceless.

The first item that caught my eye in last year’s catalogue was the Fisher Price Chatterbox Phone.

My sister and I each had one of those nifty toys back in the mid-’70s.

At that time, I’m sure, the price tag was much lower and the quality was much higher. Back then the phones were made of wood rather than plastic, and they stood up to hard play.

It got me thinking about how much play has changed in my lifetime.

We had a playhouse set up in the basement. It wasn’t made up of poly cupboards with running water and a working fridge, it was a creative setup of cardboard boxes arranged on the cement floor.

Cupboard doors that opened and closed were cut out with a knife, and accents and features were drawn on with Jiffy Marker.

We drove around the wide-open basement space in fancy cardboard cars, and if we weren’t getting along we simply rearranged the boxes and said, “Stay out of my house.”

The possibilities were endless, and this is how the Chatterbox Phone became more than a pretend telephone in our play world.

It was a pull-along toy that chattered as its eyes moved up and down. I can’t describe the sound in words, but if you grew up in the ’60s or ’70s (or were a parent during that time) you know exactly what I mean. These chattering sounds became the voices of many imaginary pets we walked up and down the street.

using one each.

This may sound a little bit far out, but imagine putting your feet onto the face of the phone and being just the right height to hold a handset in each hand. We zipped around the basement and created new games based on this unique form of transportation. It was awesome!

When my daughter was a toddler, she had our old toys to play with at Grandma and Poppo’s house, but also a heavy dose of new technology.

Each time I bought another electronic gadget guaranteed to teach Jaiden something new, her dad would say, “I grew up just fine with a box and a stick to play with.”

I’m glad she had that balance between us. I wanted the best things from our childhoods for her, but also the best of what was new.

Her grandparents were the greatest playmates of all – always willing to get down on the floor and play with open imagination.

My two-year-old was proficient on the computer with Reader Rabbit educational games, painted masterpieces in the backyard and had an electronic phone that taught her to dial 911 or Papa’s Pizzeria, depending on her desire on any given day.

She didn’t like the way the Chatterbox Phone felt under her feet, so it hasn’t been used for roller skating for a good 25 years, but she still loved to talk on it and pull it around as I did.

Jaiden learned to play backgammon, Monopoly, cards and many other games, but wasn’t as keen on them as I was in my childhood.

Now a teenager, she plays games on her phone or other electronic devices and it takes some armtwisting to get her to join me in a board game.

It makes me realize how digital our lives have become and how different the gifts under her Christmas trees have been compared to mine at the same ages.

I believe only one of these phones survived our childhood and subsequent garage sales. I’ll need to check out Mom and Dad’s basement when I go home at Christmas.

I think I’ll bring it back to rest on a shelf in my office as a reminder to make time to play.

Research shows that young people who regularly spend time in sports, clubs or lessons have higher self-esteem and better leadership skills, and are less likely to feel lonely. Young people report that being involved in interesting activities helps bring out the best in them.

Extracurricular activities offer a chance for children and youth to learn new skills, establish friendships with peers who have similar interests, and develop relationships with caring adults beyond their family circle.

Most children and young people want to be involved in activities outside of their schools and families. They can choose from a seemingly endless number of activities – soccer, dance, taekwondo, scouts, guides, cadets, skiing, hockey.

The list goes on. How will they choose? And can they do more than one?

Parents and family members can help. When children are young, it is good for them to try many activities, looking for the one that best suits their interests and abilities. As children grow they will likely start to show a preference for certain activities over others. Parents, grandparents and neighbours can be supportive of these activities and interests by offering to practise the activity and by attending games and performances as often as possible.

There are no hard and fast rules about how many activities is too many. It depends on things like the temperament of your children, how they are coping with the demands of homework, and how much sleep they need. However, helping your children learn time management skills could be one of the most important things you teach them.

Encouraging children and youth to stick with a chosen activity until the natural end of the session teaches responsibility and helps children learn that some things take a little longer to master than others.

The community can help our children be the best they can be by offering interesting opportunities for them to learn a new skill outside of regular school hours.

Place a gift under an Angel Tree for a woman or child in need

By Brad Quarin The Angel Trees are back up around Pincher Creek, allowing residents an opportunity to spread Christmas cheer to disadvantaged families in the area.

The trees are set up by the Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter, ready to collect Christmas gifts for children from families who’ve used the shelter’s services. The gifts will be picked up by Dec. 16.

“The community’s always really generous.

Every year, they’re very, very good to the women and kids we serve,” says Julie Coleman, executive director of the shelter. “It seems everyone really loves to give to kids.”

Trees can be found at Walmart, Creekside Chiropractic, Sears and Royal Bank, sporting pink and blue angels representing girls and boys who will receive a gift.

New this year is a tree set up at the Shootin’ the Breeze office on Main Street to collect pyjamas for youngsters. “We suggested that the pyjamas might be something that would be a benefit,” says admin assistant Rose Murfin. They can use as many pyjamas as they can get.

However, toys such as dolls and trucks are the norm and will be collected at the other locations. Clothes for babies and toddlers are also welcome.

You can take an angel, which will indicate the age of the child, and buy an appropriate gift.

There’s no limit to how much a Good Samaritan can spend, and the buyer stays anonymous.

Julie asks that you place your gift under the tree unwrapped, with the angel attached.

The shelter primarily serves Pincher Creek, Brocket, Crowsnest Pass and area. Many clients who stand to benefit from the Angel Trees grapple with poverty, finding housing and covering Christmas costs.

The shelter has been putting up Angel Trees for six years, an idea of former admin assistant Dee-Anna Aubin, who may have been inspired by similar programs in other communities.

“And we were, at the time, looking to add on our food hamper campaign,” Julie says.

The trees have been a big success, as they’ve always received as many toys as needed, with some left over for the next year. As well, last year they had food hampers for 100 families. Clients have been very thankful.

“I’m proud of everything we do here,” Julie says. “The staff are extraordinary, and everyone genuinely works really hard to try and improve lives of women and kids we serve. The community helps with that – even as a whole community, we ought to be proud.”

Help put a roof over St. Paul’s Church

By Brad Quarin In need of a new roof, members of St. Paul’s Church at the Piikani Nation are considering new forms of fundraisers and receiving generous donations.

“In order to keep our church alive, we have fundraisers year-round,” says George Four Horns, who heads the St. Paul’s parish council.

The council looks after the church’s finances and maintenance, with Father Freddy Validivia serving as an administrator.

The church is part way to its goal of $17,000 needed for the new roof, having received a donation of $5,000 from a Calgary parish. They also received $1,000 from a family belonging to the church, who prefer to remain anonymous. George appreciates their contributions.

St. Paul’s Church has a long history on the reserve, being established around 1910, he says. It was later moved into town and in the 1970s they held fundraisers for a new building.

The current building, a wooden structure, was built in 1981 by a brother from a diocese in Calgary, with donated material and hard work.

It can hold as many as 100 people. Today, there are between 75 and 100 active members of the church, out of around 700 Catholics in Brocket.

Now aged, the church roof leaks quite a bit, particularly at the bell tower, when it rains or snow melts, George says. The wind has wreaked havoc on the shingles. They’ve fixed it in places, but it keeps on deteriorating. They hope to replace it with a metal roof soon.

The church has bake sales on Sundays, and every year they’ve taken part in highway cleanups, covering 48 kilometres. Having satisfied health and safety standards, St. Paul’s Church is also able to do catering.

In the past, they’ve held bingo games as fundraisers, and are planning another for Dec. 14. It will be held at the reserve’s multipurpose facility and is open to everyone, with tickets available at the door.

The bonanza for this game is guaranteed at $1,000, which George hopes will draw plenty of players. Money was donated by parishioners, and the church also approached departments on the reserve and organizations and businesses in Pincher Creek for donations. Among the businesses donating merchandise are Sobeys, Co-op, Walmart and Pincher Office Products.

In the meantime, churchgoers will be brainstorming on what else they can do to achieve their goal.

Pulled over for a good cause

By Brad Quarin A number of motorists who passed by Home Hardware in Blairmore on Friday were surprised to be stopped by Crowsnest Pass Emergency Services.

Fortunately, there was no emergency, but rather an opportunity to support the Crowsnest Pass Food Bank, which many did.

“I’m happy to contribute,” said local driver David McIntyre, who chipped in with a cash donation when stopped by firefighter Connie Hill.

The Charity Checkstop, a collaboration between emergency services and the food bank, is a tradition in Crowsnest Pass before the holiday season. They take donations of money and nonperishable foods.

“With Christmastime coming around the corner, there’s some families in need here in the Pass, and we’re out here today to contribute,” said Const. Carla Perrin of the RCMP. Terry Grinevitch, president of food bank, was also out that day and said this has been going on for a few years. Last year, they raised more than $3,000, and have a goal to top that this year.

Halfway through the day, they had collected mostly cash, with a few food items here and there.

Some drivers knew about the checkstop from Mountain Radio, or from previous years, but others mistook the flashing lights for an emergency, Carla said. When stopped, drivers were favourable to the checkstop and showed generosity.

This is Carla’s first year in the Pass, and she feels this is a good cause. “It’s important to, as a community, contribute to those families and make sure that they have pleasant, happy holidays,” she said. “It’s also important to note that donations were accepted today, but the food bank is always open through the week and people can always make donations.”

Greetings from Crestview By the residents of Crestview Lodge, Pincher Creek

So far we have had a very happy November and we are still not done yet. Our pub night near the end of October was very fun; we had Phil Lethbridge, along with Peter and Charlotte Ogloff, come to entertain us. They always play our favourite songs that we can all sing along to, and they always stay a bit to visit with us too. We do hope to see more of them, as we just love them!

TV bingo is going smoothly on account of the efforts of Gerda N. She is one of our residents who volunteered to make TV bingo happen for the guys and gals of Crestview.

Thanks so much for your help, Gerda!

Our Halloween party was a lot of fun. We played some games, won prizes and had a costume contest. After all that, we had the Orange Blossom Express play and entertain us for the afternoon. We have been so lucky to have great entertainment come to us here at Crestview. We sang along, some danced, and we enjoyed cake and coffee with the band afterward. It turned out to be a great afternoon!

On Nov. 7, the Legion members and cadets from Pincher Creek came to provide a memorial service for us. That was wonderful for those who were not able to get out to the Remembrance Day Service at the Community Hall; we greatly appreciate the time they take to come see us each year.

The residents helped put together some posters of past and present Canadian military members; we can display them with pride.

Only a few of our residents were able to ride the bus and attend the Remembrance Day Service on Nov. 11. One who attended was Fritz H., who presented the wreath on behalf of Crestview Lodge.

On Nov. 7 we had a special treat. Bente Hanson was here to visit one of our residents. Bente blew us away with how wonderfully she played – so quickly and smoothly we felt like we were in a fancy music theatre. In the afternoon, while the Legion members were still here, Bente came back and played some more. What a tremendously talented lady!

It’s almost time again for our annual tea and bazaar. Make sure to mark your calendars for Thursday, Dec. 5 from 2 to 4 p.m. We have raffle tickets available from residents and staff, and from Charmaine, the Crestview activity co-ordinator.

The tickets are priced at $1 each for some very nice prizes. A cedar chest built by John S. and valued at $500 is first prize. A Noah’s ark pull toy, complete with Noah and animals, hand-built by John S. and painted by some of the residents, is valued at $175 and is second prize. A handmade afghan crocheted by Connie R. and valued at $75.00 is third prize for the raffle.

The proceeds go towards the residents’ entertainment, parties and outings. So, please show your support and buy a ticket.

Castle Ford is a driving force for local high schools

By Brad Quarin Pincher Creek’s high schools got a big boost from Castle Ford and Ford of Canada with Drive One 4 UR School, which was a bigger hit than last year.

The event, consisting of test drives and some vehicle sales, was held in September.

It raised $5,540, to be divided evenly between Matthew Halton Booster Club and the Friends of St. Michael’s Foundation. The money will support extracurricular, athletic and academic activities.

“It’s a great thing Castle Ford is doing,” says Robert Plante, who belongs to the booster club supporting Matthew Halton High School. “It’s greatly appreciated.”

Lorraine Bruder of the Friends of St. Michael’s Foundation offers “great applause to the community for coming out and supporting the Drive One day.”

Merlin Lewis of Castle Ford is likewise satisfied with the event. “We had excellent support from both schools,” he says.

Ford of Canada pays $20 for every test drive – up to 300 – on Drive One day, he explains. There were 12 new vehicles to drive along a set path, and a questionnaire to fill out.

As Robert notes, all a person has to do to support the schools is take a test drive, and it doesn’t cost them a cent.

Castle Ford also gave out coupons, so when someone buys a vehicle before April 30, another $200 goes to the school of the buyer’s choice, Merlin says. Although no purchase is required during Drive One, Robert finds it good to hear Castle Ford did sell some vehicles.

There are others to thank, including Co-op for providing funding for the site and lending their grill for burgers and hotdogs. Tim Hortons chipped in with coffee and doughnuts early on. “Thanks to all the volunteers,” Robert says.

The money helps out in a variety of ways. At St. Michael’s School, it may support elective classes such as drama, art and cooking, depending on what funding is requested.

Last year, the donation helped buy French books and band equipment. It also helps with fuelling and maintaining the buses for field trips, Lorraine says.

At Matthew Halton High School, the money also helps run the buses for academic, athletic and extracurricular activities. Additionally, the booster club pays 10 per cent of sports fees for all students of the school, so Drive One, the lasagna fundraisers and casinos help with that.

Merlin feels helping out the schools is important. “Everyone has children or relatives who go through the school system.”

By not picking one high school over another, the event has helped all of Pincher Creek, Robert says.

While in this case the Drive One program supported two high schools, Merlin says it is available to any school or community group.

The kitchen at Bloomin’ Inn near Pincher Creek was bustling with activity Sunday as staff and volunteers of Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village baked up a storm for The Largest Christmas Cookie Sale in Pincher Creek History. Pincher Creek Legion supports community Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43 recently made community donations to Crestview Lodge and Care Bears.

The Scottish Play at Lundbreck

By Brad Quarin It was double, double toil and trouble at Livingstone School in Lundbreck earlier this month, when Theatre Prospero teamed up with students to perform William Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

This was the Edmonton company’s third visit to the school, having previously helped stage A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo and Juliet in Lundbreck.

While most of the large parts were played by Theatre Prospero actors, including Elliott James as Macbeth and Sereana Malani as Lady Macbeth, many students had roles.

These included important roles like King Duncan, murdered by Macbeth to take the Scottish throne, played by Grade 7 student Hunter Olsen. “It was nice to be the ruler for some time,” Hunter says.

Others had supporting roles, such as Grade 6 students Kataya McClung and Jaelle Vanderplas and Grade 4 student Mary-Alice GoodwinTanner as the apparitions who ambiguously foretell Macbeth’s downfall.

The production had a nice atmosphere, with the lights and students’ costumes contributing to the mood. The delivery of some of the lines and the witches’ song from this great work of literature chilled me, and the effects could be neat.

While movie director Roman Polanski graphically depicted Macduff beheading Macbeth, Elliott and Evan Hall went behind a screen to show it by

silhouette, drawing gasps from the crowd.

Macbeth is known for its complex language, but the students managed their lines. “It’s difficult to start, but once you get your lines memorized, it’s just memory flowing,” Hunter says. Jaelle adds it was easier playing the apparitions, who didn’t talk much.

The students received a favourable reaction from their parents and Theatre Prospero, with Kataya saying her dad was engrossed in the play.

The students also liked the costumes and makeup Theatre Prospero gave them, which made it seem like Halloween had lasted longer than usual this year.

Jaelle says she gave her poor brother, who’s only five, quite a scare in her makeup and clothing. He ran away from her.

Hunter received a crown. “I felt like a Scottish man,” he says.

Kataya, Jaelle and Hunter all enjoy acting, with Hunter taking part in all three Theatre Prospero plays. Kataya was in Romeo and Juliet while Jaelle had a non-speaking role in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Jaelle and Kataya were interested in acting more, though they hadn’t heard of Macbeth before.

The subject matter of the play is dark, and in real life there are a number of superstitions about it. Believing the text is cursed by witches, some actors don’t dare speak the title aloud, referring to it as The Scottish Play behind the scenes.

about the superstitions, they screwed their courage to the sticking place, defied the witches and mostly called the play Macbeth. The real title was easier for the young children in the play to remember, Hunter says.

Generally, the students didn’t find the play scary, though Hunter says it would be frightening in real life.

Kataya, Jaelle and Hunter all agree they’d like to see Theatre Prospero come back in the future, and they’re not tired of Shakespeare yet.
