My Little Corner

This week has predominantly revolved around four things that have become intertwined for me — the brutal weather, the sounds of Christmas, the disappearance of Taylor Elliott, and the strength of our community.

If you’ve been following social media and mainstream news, you’ll already know about Taylor. He’s been missing since Dec. 1 — the same morning winter hit hard in our region.

We’ve been sharing information about this on our website and Facebook page. The more who see Taylor’s face, the better the chance of jogging a memory that may lead to him.

I’ve been asked repeatedly if I’m posting about Taylor because I know him, since “hard news” content is generally not found in the Breeze.

I don’t know Taylor and I don’t have any “inside” information. I do know that it doesn’t matter what the circumstances were that night – he simply needs to be found.

My heart aches for Taylor’s family.

As a mom, I can’t imagine not knowing where my child is, especially in the weather conditions we’ve experienced over the past week.

People who know Taylor tell me he is an experienced outdoorsman who knows the backcountry well. They say if anyone can stay safe in this weather, it’s him.

For over a week, search parties have been out daily — on foot, on horseback, on snowmobile and even by air — looking for any sign of Taylor.

While RCMP suspended their search efforts on the weekend, family, friends and strangers continue on and refuse to give up hope.

This is an awesome thing about communities like ours. People always step up and pull together when needed.

Music can also draw people together and warm hearts. Comfort can be drawn from familiar verses and melodies, and it was a beautiful moment at the carol festival on Sunday when so many voices joined together to sing “Silent Night.”

This particular piece is one many people relate to. The wind howled outside as we sang, safe and warm in the heart of our community.

I hoped for Taylor’s safety and peace for his family as I sang. Singing together felt like a prayer

with a group hug on the side.

I am writing this Monday evening, after a day of unrelenting wind. I know the volunteers searching are as unrelenting as the weather is.

At the United Church Cowboy Christmas service on Sunday, the congregation was asked to consider providing supper for the searchers. It was heartwarming how quickly the sign-up sheet was full, along with additional donations to help in the coming days. So many people want to help.

“I’ve always known this is a good community, but this is a horrible way to find out just how good it is,” says Taylor’s aunt, Jill Chamberlain.

“Every morning we start out with fresh hope, then night falls and your heart breaks all over again.”

If you are a Facebook user, please continue to share posts and photos. Taylor could be anywhere, and the more who see his face the better.

Online you’ll also find a variety of photos which include identifying features such as a significant scar on Taylor’s right hand and a script tattoo of the word “family” on his right forearm.

If you have outbuildings or know of vacant or abandoned buildings, please check them. Be alert for tracks in the snow or smoke from a fire.

Pincher Creek RCMP continue to investigate tips. If you have seen Taylor or have any lead, no matter how insignificant it may seem, please call them at 403-627-6000.

The command post for the search is at the Pincher Creek golf course clubhouse. Volunteers meet at 8 a.m. and debrief at 5:30 p.m. Consider helping if you are able.

Taylor’s disappearance has me feeling tremendous empathy for his parents, the weather reminds me of the harsh realities of life, the music of the season brings me peace, and the strength of this community makes me proud and hopeful.

Michelle and James, please know there are many parents feeling your pain and wishing there was more we could do to help. You are not alone.

There is power in positive thought. Let’s all keep the faith.

The Breeze Mailbox Livingstone School students and staff have been busy I am so proud of our wonderful K–12 Livingstone School community! Our students, staff and parents have been generously raising funds for a number of causes this season: * Grade 9 students attended WE Day and are now leading the collection of change, raising funds to support the building of schools around the world. * Following WE Day, our student council sold 116 rafikis (friendship chains), raising $1,160 to support the gift of education in Me to We communities. * Several staff and students participated in Movember, raising funds to support prostate cancer research. Mr. MacDonald, our phys-ed instructor, allowed students who raised the most money to shave off his moustache and shave his head! * Student council is sponsoring Warm Wednesdays in December. Funds raised from selling hot lunches will be donated to local food banks. * Elementary students are collecting warm mitts and toques, and junior and senior high students are collecting teen gifts, all to be donated to the women’s resource centres in Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass.

Christmas market supports community

By Brad Quarin With Christmas only two weeks away, Christmas shoppers can pick up some quality gifts sold by locals and at the same time socialize during the Christmas Market. It takes place at Pincher Creek Community Hall on Saturday.

Kimberly Hurst of Lundbreck, who sells Scentsy flameless candles, started the market, now in its sixth year, to exhibit the community’s homebased businesses and their products.

This year’s event will feature some new vendors and an impressive range of goods — from meats and baking, to leather products from the Livingstone Colony, to jewelry.

For Kimberly, it’s wonderful to see the passion shown by local vendors who make their goods from scratch, such as Wendy Davies with her business, Willow Valley Soapworks.

Two vendors, Crowsnest Coffee and Hawaiian Treats, will have the Community Hall kitchen and serve coffee, Hawaiian doughnuts and piña coladas.

Around 50 vendors will be on hand, mostly local, leaving enough room for visitors to sit, have coffee or lunch, and chat. In the past, some visitors have spent hours at the market, Kimberly says. It’s a good place for families to visit, as children can enjoy face painting by Miranda Senecal and have their picture taken with Santa between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

There will also be a chance to show generosity at the market. Donations will be taken at the door for the Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter and the food bank.

The market used to be held in the Lions Den. When Kimberly moved it to Community Hall about three years ago to accommodate more vendors, she desired for the whole community to benefit.

She chose the food bank and women’s shelter as her causes, mindful that this is a busy season for both. Families struggling to celebrate Christmas can use the help.

Donations of food will be collected, all going to the food bank, and cash raised will be halved between the two organizations. Part of the proceeds from the face painting and photography will go to the charities, as well. Last year, the women’s shelter used money from the market to supply presents for older children, since they had already received plenty for the little ones.

The market has been great for Christmas charity. Last year they filled four large boxes with food, which Kimberly struggled to put in her vehicle.

“That was a good problem to have,” she says. “It’s a nice community effort, and that’s something that makes me happy.”

The Christmas Market is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, and admission is free.

The Breeze Mailbox Riversdale Resources will commence drilling operations this week on its Grassy Mountain project, about six kilometres north of Blairmore.

This is an exciting milestone for the project, and marks the beginning of ground-based activities under Riversdale ownership.

The initial drill program involves the drilling of 15 to 20 holes and is expected to take about three months. This will be followed in 2014 with a more extensive drilling program and other ground-based activities.

Throughout this program, there will be heavy trucks and other large equipment on the access road to the project, known as the Grassy Mountain Road, and also across the Grassy Mountain project area. The use of larger equipment does increase the risk of incidents involving vehicles travelling on the road and the project area.

To ensure the community is fully informed, Riversdale has placed signs along the Grassy Mountain Road indicating where activities are taking place. In the interest of the safety of the community and the Riversdale employees and contractors, we ask that people limit the use of the Grassy Mountain Road where possible.

A safety person will be monitoring the Grassy Mountain trail to advise users of activity as it happens. Should there be a need to use the access road, we request that speeds be reduced and extra caution be taken.

As activities ramp up in 2014, Riversdale may implement additional safety controls on and near the project area to further manage the risk of incidents between the community, recreational users and Riversdale’s activities. Riversdale will keep the community informed at all times.

Sponsoring a soldier ShirRae Riehs and her staff at Mirror Mirror Salon in Pincher Creek are adopting a family for Christmas, and hope their clients and community will support the effort. It turns out ShirRae is well acquainted with a family going through a drastic change in circumstance — her brother, Jordan Thompson, is a proud father of four, and he and his wife have learned they’re adding triplets to the family.

“He called and told me to sit down,” ShirRae says. Natural triplets were a surprise for everyone. Mom and all three babies are doing great, and the triplets will be born in February when they reach 32 weeks gestation. Soon the family will include seven children under the age of seven!

Jordan serves with the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, based in Edmonton, and spends Remembrance Day in Pincher Creek when he can. While they moved frequently growing up, ShirRae and Jordan lived in Pincher Creek and the Mountain View area, so he is not a stranger to the community.

“I was already planning to help as much as I could,” ShirRae says. “We decided to keep it personal and close to the heart this year.”

With her staff and clients on board, this surprise effort will make for a Christmas Jordan and his family will always remember.

ShirRae is donating all tips earned from Dec. 16 to 23, and clients are already adding to the contribution box. She suggests preemie diapers, clothing, blankets as items that would be greatly appreciated, and has been overwhelmed by the generosity shown to Jordan and his family.

On Christmas Day, ShirRae is planning to surprise Jordan with a visit.

Before moving to Pincher Creek almost five years ago, I only knew the town existed by the cluster of lights seen from Highway 3. Shortly after moving here, I noticed a few things. The first was how big the sky seemed when you looked from horizon to horizon. Then, of course, I noticed the consistency of the gale-force wind — or what those who grew up in this part of the world politely call “a bit of a breeze.”

I have become better acquainted with the same prairie I had driven across numerous times. It always seemed to be a monotonous trip, the scenery unchanging from one kilometre to the next. Recent road trips around Pincher have given me the opportunity to really see the prairie. On these trips I started to look closer and, for the first time, noticed the prairie was not dull but hides its beauty in plain sight.

I have wondered what else makes Pincher Creek so different, and I believe it’s the people who live here. Whether you can trace your heritage to the first people, are descendants of the original homesteaders, or are lucky enough to have moved here, we all have one thing in common: we care about each other.

From the start, I have felt embraced by the people who reside here.

When my face and name were unknown, I was greeted with a hello from strangers passing by, had doors held open or was asked if I needed any assistance. Although this behaviour at Christmas is not uncommon, Pincher Creek seems to have the spirit of helping one another all year long.

I had a sharp reminder of this recently. Since it was another beautiful day that left the streets bare of snow, I felt confident my power wheelchair could take me downtown to deposit a cheque. The trip to the bank was uneventful, which really bolstered my confidence. I took another route home and turned up the sidewalk, to be faced with a mound of snow that had been blown there by that lovely wind.

I looked over the mound, then looked back the way I had come. Not relishing the thought of backtracking, I inched forward in an attempt to determine if the mound was covered by ice or was just wet snow I could power through. I had two answers to my question. The first was a crackle of ice when the front wheels touched the the rim of the mound, and the second was when the centre power wheels spun on ice that had been hidden by a thin layer of snow.

I could no longer go forward or back. When I put my foot on the ground in an attempt to push myself backwards, you guessed it, that slipped too. I was silently cursing my plight and helplessness when two Vista Village staff members who were driving by stopped to push me off the ice.

I was feeling both relieved and embarrassed to receive their help when another staff member from Vista joined the others to push me free and make sure I was all right. Then two other drivers stopped to offer their assistance. Not even five minutes had passed since I had become stuck to when I was pushed free of the ice.

Many people say I am either brave or touched in the head when I decide to make these trips without much thought about my own safety. While the jury is still out on that, I have another reason for my confidence, which is knowing that fellow residents of Pincher Creek would come to my aid if I were in trouble. I know this because I have seen and experienced unexpected kindness since moving here.

It does not have to be December to be kind to those in need, to smile or hold a door open. In Pincher Creek it seems people help one another all year long. I have heard more than once that “If not for the wind everyone would want to live here.” After the last five years, I have to agree!

After much thought, I have decided to quit writing for this paper and pursue other interests. When I first started writing for Shootin’ the Breeze, it was new and I hoped my contribution would help it on its way. Through the hard work of the owners and all those employed by them, this locally owned paper has grown by leaps and bounds. I like to compare it to The Little Engine That Could, with the Robins driving the train. As far as I can see, the track is clear and you will go far.

I hope you have a Merry Christmas — and keep the Christmas spirit of caring all through the year!

It could be a lucky Friday for the Pioneer Country Christmas Market

By Brad Quarin Although Pincher Creek’s farmers market returns for its Pioneer Country Christmas Market on Friday the 13th, manager Tracy Glen is not at all worried about bad luck.

They’ve actually had good luck, securing many new vendors for their only market in December and a new sponsor, the Cowley Lions Club.

The market reopens, “after a good, long rest,” at the Pincher Creek arena at 2 p.m. and runs to 6.

There are some challenges in holding the market, but Tracy is getting plenty of help and the vendors are highly enjoyable to work with. “It’s a community effort,” she says.

The market’s grown, with around 25 vendors, at least half being new.

Tracy hopes to see them again in the summer. Most vendors are local, with some coming from Lethbridge or High River.

The goods available will include some Christmas baking, such as cookies, pies and cakes. There will also be wine, clothes, jewelry, children’s books and aboriginal crafts to entice gift buyers.

The tables will be decorated and a new banner will be unveiled, reflecting the market’s new sponsorship. Tracy calls the Cowley Lions’ support “a perfect fit.” She’s a member of the club herself, and her fellow Lions are enthusiastic about the market.

Tracy will be there with her dog Sage, a familiar face at the farmers market. Tracy has put fake antlers on Sage before, but the dog doesn’t much like them, so may wear just a bow. Santa is dropping in at 3.

During the market, the arena will also be in use for figure skating and hockey. “It’s a busy place,” Tracy says.

The summer market returns in June, on another Friday the 13th, so be sure to wish them luck.

They’ll be there for a purpose: to collect food for the local food bank as part of Pincher Creek’s new Stuff the Bus campaign. The buses will be at both stores from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Sharon Roberts, location manager for the First Student bus company, is bringing the idea to Pincher Creek, having previously participated in Edmonton Transit’s campaign.

“We run the buses, and there’s a need for food for the food bank. We thought it might be kind of a fun thing to do,” she says. “We’re encouraging the general public to help us stuff a bus with nonperishable food items.”

She’s getting help from others, including St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek and Livingstone School in Lundbreck, who are taking donations for First Student to pick up on Monday.

The other local schools have their own food drives.

Bus driver Wayne Camber is co-ordinator with Sharon, and is acutely aware of the need for the project. He’s a member of the McMan Rural FASD Lifespan Project and was on the boards for the Pincher Creek Food Bank and Pincher Creek Women’s Emergency Shelter. As such, he’s worked with low-income families.

“Extra food for special days like Christmas just isn’t available,” he says. The Pincher Creek Food Bank serves 300 families, which might include 600 children or more.

“A lot of people don’t understand the food bank, they can’t figure out why anybody would need to [use it],” Wayne remarks. But raising a family on minimum wage is demanding.

Sharon adds that other Christmas expenses such as presents lead to families being more cashstrapped in January.

As bus drivers, they’re familiar with the chil-

dren. “Kids shouldn’t have to be going to school hungry,” she says.

Since this is the first Stuff the Bus campaign in Pincher Creek that Wayne and Sharon are aware of, they aren’t sure how much food to expect.

However, if the event becomes annual, it may grow from there.

The foods they’re looking for are non-perishables such as peanut butter, canned goods, cereals or juice boxes, rather than fresh produce, milk or frozen meat.

There’s no such thing as overfilling the food bank, as demand remains after Christmas and throughout the year.

First Student was also recently involved in the community with the Parade of Lights, taking first prize for their decorated bus. It was adorned with lights, ribbons, stockings and even reindeer heads made out of milk jugs.

“It was very cute,” Sharon says. Wayne was on board, too, giving out treats to the crowd.

Town & Country Liquor Store has cause to celebrate

By Brad Quarin A business catering to people with cause to celebrate will itself be celebrating, as Town & Country Liquor Store has entered its 20th year in Pincher Creek.

Town & Country is an independent retail liquor store offering over 3,000 different products. Owner Dave Tompkins explains their longevity. “We have tremendous staff here,” he says of the eight local employees. “We’ve enjoyed the support of the community for the last 20 years.”

They’ll be celebrating their anniversary with in-store draws and prizes, including an Xbox One, a TV, a Blu-ray player, coolers and a leather recliner.

Some of the draws are happening after Christmas, and as usual there will be some promotional sales.

The building has actually been a liquor store for longer than 20 years, as it was once run by the Alberta Liquor Control Board. When the Alberta government privatized the liquor industry in 1993, Dave made a winning bid for the store. Before acquiring the store, he was running 4 Seasons Imports, which deals in farm and ranch equipment.

Mona Low, who was already working for ALCB before the industry was privatized, came to manage the business. She recalls that Dave received the keys to the store on Dec. 1, 1993, with the doors opening to customers on Dec. 3. They chose the name Town & Country and its logo with consideration of their clientele and area.

In 2000, Dave opened another Town & Country Liquor Store in Fort Macleod, with Mona having a hand in starting it up. However, she’s worked mainly at the Pincher Creek location.

Highlights of the past two decades include their award nominations and two wins. One was the Alberta Liquor Store Association southern zone retailer of the year award. In 2009, Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce gave Town & Country Liquor Store the large-business award.

A simple nomination is an honour, but when the store won the largebusiness award, Mona says she was ecstatic and shed some tears. There was also much jumping, hooting and hollering among the staff. “It really gives you a sense that people appreciate what you’ve done,” Mona says.

In the upcoming months, Mona will be leaving the management position, but will likely stick around to assist her replacement. It’s kind of sad for her to go. “I love my customers,” she says. “I’ve worked in this industry for so many years, it’s what I know.”

Dave says whoever replaces Mona will have “awfully large shoes to fill.”

He gives her much credit for the success of the business, along with his other employees and the public.

Author’s creative fire is burning

By Brad Quarin When Inez Hendrickson began reading The Fourth Man by local author Doug Rawling, she was impressed. “Just as you get into it, it’s very captivating — it makes you want to flip the page,” she says. “My husband first read it. He said it should be a movie, it was so gripping.”

Inez is the owner of Crockets Trading Company in Bellevue, and sometimes invites local writers to come in. “I like to encourage the local authors,” she says, so she contacted Doug.

The book signing at Crockets at the end of November was Doug’s first. He also had CDs there, as he is a musician in addition to being a cowboy. “I need to be doing something creative,” he says. “I always have something creative on the burner.”

Living in a log house he built in Willow Valley, Doug’s creative side owes to his family background. His dad taught music and his mom gave voice lessons, so music was always a “natural expression” in his home. His dad also read to him.

In Grades 3 and 4, Doug was writing poetry as a hobby, and in Grade 6 he belonged to a band.

With his brother Bruce, Doug formed the musical act known as the Rawling Brothers, who performed “Rocky Mountain country,” a blend of country and other genres. They played at country, folk and gospel festivals.

Doug particularly relished writing the songs, and loved when they produced albums he would

want to hear. Their band, Crossection, had a song, “Love is Who You Are,” that played across the United States in the 1980s, and a single came out in Europe as well.

Bruce and Doug have since moved on to their own projects, with Doug describing his solo work as having a folky and Blue Rodeo style.

As a writer, he began and then abandoned three books. Four years ago, he forced himself to stick with a novel he had started writing. Once the novel took off, he got wrapped up in it and couldn’t stop writing, he says. He’s now authored three books, two of which have been published under the titles Providence Pass and The Fourth Man. The novels are westerns, serious in tone, which grew out of his background, love for the outdoors and horses, and his fascination with the history. He says he is intrigued by “the big, wideopen country that was developing at a rapid pace.”

With his writing, Doug labours to develop his characters and engage the reader. He likes creating characters with faith and hope.

For influences, he cites Luke Short, an American author he began reading after losing some interest in Louis L’Amour’s work. Doug began writing for himself, and now writes mainly for people like himself.

Looking to promote his books more, he was excited when Inez invited him to Crockets.

of the outdoors as a director of Wilderness Ranch, a church camp for children.

The camp allows children of various faiths to experience riding horses and have some adventure, which can be physically demanding. Doug originally worked at the camp in Claresholm in the 1980s, and got involved again 13 years ago with another camp west of Highway 22.

He intends to continue writing songs, and is working on another western novel.

By Brad Quarin Freezing temperatures may have prevented a number of Crowsnest Pass vehicles from starting this weekend, but didn’t stop Pack the Pickup from running for the sixth year.

An annual event, Pack the Pickup takes donations for the Crowsnest Pass Food Bank to fill up a new truck, provided by Bridge City Chrysler of Fort Macleod. Given the bitter cold, the food and cash donations were collected inside Blairmore Sobeys this year, with the pickup parked outside.

Bob Morrow of Bridge City Chrysler used to live in Crowsnest Pass, and still comes back for the event. “People of Crowsnest Pass are really good to me, and this is my way of giving back,”

he says. “The food bank is for a great cause.”

Terry Grinevitch, president of the food bank, says the event is also supported by Sobeys, which provides the venue and gift cards, and by Mountain Radio, which broadcasts the event and helps take donations.

Due to the cold weather, donations came slower than last year, “but better than some,” Terry says. Among the donations are money, including a large can of change, canned vegetables, meats, soups and stews, cereal and a big bag of sugar substitute. In previous years, they’ve had no trouble filling the truck.

“We have a need for more food at this time of year,” Terry says, adding the effort also lets people know the food bank is at work.

By Brad Quarin Starting this afternoon, local students will be sharing their musical talents as the schools hold their Christmas concerts.

Matthew Halton High School in Pincher Creek will lead the way with its concert at 3 p.m. today. With the senior high school band having performed in the Pincher Creek Christmas Carol Festival, today’s concert is the junior band’s turn to perform. Students from Grades 7 to 9 will be playing their instruments at the school.

Next comes Isabelle Sellon School in Blairmore, with its concert at the school on Thursday at 7 p.m. The whole school, Grades 4 to 6, will be joining in a performance with One World Drum Co., a unique music school focusing on drums and ancient instruments. The school bands will be playing and there will be a dance.

Crowsnest Consolidated High School in Coleman is having its concert on Monday at 7 p.m. It will showcase both the band and the choir.

On Tuesday, Coleman’s Horace Allen School joins in the festivities, with all classes from kindergarten to Grade 3 putting on a performance.

The concert takes place at the school and starts at 1:30 p.m.

Next Wednesday, Peigan School in the Piikani Nation has its concert at the school at 1 p.m. The younger students will be singing and playing instruments.

Finally, on Dec. 20 at 11 a.m., Livingstone School in Lundbreck will have singing by students from kindergarten to Grade 6.

Canyon School and St. Michael’s School in Pincher Creek welcomed Trickster Theatre, a “physical theatre” company, to perform with their students instead of holding Christmas concerts this year.

Passtrak members on the run

By Brad Quarin The local track and field club, Passtrak, has started up for another year, with its first indoor track race in Calgary coming up on Saturday.

Passtrak provides training and chances for competition for athletes, typically aged 10 and up, from the Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and Elk Valley region. Beginners as well as experienced athletes looking to improve their performance are welcome.

“Absolutely no skill is necessary, just a whole bunch of enthusiasm,” says Ritch Braun, who founded and runs the club. “We enjoy working with everybody.”

Having focused on the Canada Summer Games this summer, Ritch got the club started slightly later than usual, with its first race in Lethbridge in late September.

At the Run for the Pumpkin cross-country race, where young athletes win pumpkins, the Ratudradra family from Elkford were Passtrak’s standouts.

The Dec. 14 track race will mark the start of the winter season for the club. There are about 12 track meets they can take on until the end of April.

Club activities include running, from 60-metre sprints to 10,000 metres, throwing javelins and ham-

mers, and jumping events. What athletes take on can depend on age, with children throwing baseballs rather than javelins.

This year, members include Noah Schuh from Crowsnest Pass, returning for his fourth year. He goes to Isabelle Sellon School, where gym is a favourite subject, and the club allows him to learn new techniques and train for better strength. He took part in the Sole Survivor race during Rum Runner Days and did well.

A new member is Keely Anderson, also from Crowsnest Pass, who’s eight. She liked running track at school, and her friends told her about Passtrak.

Ritch launched Passtrak 31 years ago as an independent, non-profit group. Fees are kept as low as possible, with a goal of enabling any athlete to participate. They range from $225 per year for peewee athletes to $265 for masters, aged 35 and up.

Participation has been relatively steady over the past eight to 10 years, with between 12 and 17 athletes.

Members can look forward to the Alberta Summer Games in 2014, and Ritch hopes a few young athletes will qualify.

Mission accomplished for Operation Christmas Child

By Brad Quarin In support of Kootenai Brown Pioneer Village and the community’s holiday spirit, the Pincher Creek and District Historical Society is holding Christmas at the Inn at Bloomin’ Inn on Friday.

“It’s an awesome Christmas dinner,” says Colleen Casey Cyr, president of the historical society and owner of Bloomin’ Inn, located three miles east of Pincher Creek.

The dinner consists of turkey or roast beef, both served with all the trimmings. Live and silent auctions will be held on items that could make lovely Christmas gifts, such as a wool quilt, a birdhouse decorated for Christmas, and hot chocolate.

Money from the auctions and dinner tickets, $30 per person or $55 per couple, supports the museum and its operations.

However, with the entertainment, Colleen prefers to call the event a “funraiser” rather than a fundraiser. The Southern Accord Chorus, a large a cappella group from Lethbridge, will perform Christmas carols and ABBA songs.

“They’re really awesome entertainers,” she says. They’ve been at KBPV before, and a desire for them to return led to the creation of Christmas at the Inn this year. “It was a match made in heaven.”

The dinner is also supported by Operation Red Nose, providing rides home for you and your vehicle.

Like KBPV, the inn is decorated for Christmas, and its link with the historical society made it a good place to have the meal. “We’re tremendous supporters of the museum,” Colleen says. She and the historical society board members are cooking.

Cocktails start at 5:30 p.m. and supper is at 6:30.

By Brad Quarin Operation Christmas Child was a success in Pincher Creek this year, with Foothills Community Church collecting more donations than last year.

Gary Piltingsrud, a church member involved with the program, estimates they put together 100 shoeboxes, though there was no official count.

Operation Christmas Child, run by the Samaritan’s Purse organization, is a project to give disadvantaged children throughout the world something for Christmas. Toys, clothes and school supplies can be placed in shoeboxes and shipped to poorer countries.

This is an important cause, Gary feels, because many of the children who will receive these gifts may not otherwise have these useful things.

In November, a shopping cart of shoeboxes was placed in Ranchland Mall for two weeks. Volunteers folded the shoeboxes, the shopping cart eventually emptied as people took them, and Gary refilled the cart once. He believes a large number of people took shoeboxes to the Greyhound station.

Foothills Community Church inherited the program in Pincher Creek when a lady from Chinook Bible Chapel could no longer run it. Other churches expressed an interest in donating this year, and likely did. This was Gary’s second year of direct involvement in the project.

Coming up, Foothills Community Church will have its Christmas service, which will include a children’s concert, on Sunday.

In loving memory of

Barbara Kippax 1941 to 2013

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Ann Kippax (nee French), age 72, at Pincher Creek Hospital on Nov. 22, 2013.

Barbara was preceded by an infant daughter, Lena Ann, and by her parents, Harold and Lena, all of Manchester, England. She is survived by her loving husband, Peter; her son, Darran (Bobbi), of Waterdown, Ont.; her daughter, Dezna, of Pincher Creek; beloved grandsons Alex, Gavin and Dylan; her brother, Brian (Pat), of Cannington, Ont.; and Bosco (the cat) of Waterdown.

Barbara was born in Manchester, England in 1941, immigrating to Canada with her family in 1967. She lived in Lachine, Que. until 1976, when she returned to England.

In 1978, Barbara returned to Canada and settled in Calgary until 1984, when she and Peter ventured to Nova Scotia, purchased land and built a log cabin in the woods. They remained in Nova Scotia for several years. Barbara moved to Pincher Creek in 1998 to make her final home.

Barbara had a great sense of humour and laughter was a big part of her life. She always enjoyed her annual trips to England, visiting with family and longtime dear friends. A loving wife, mother, nana, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and dear friend, Barbara will be sorely missed.

Our sincerest thanks go to the staff at the Pincher Creek hospital for giving so much to provide the care and attention Barbara needed. We will always remember your dedication, your wisdom, your compassion and your grace. We are so very grateful.

A tea to celebrate Barbara’s life was held on Nov. 27 at Whispering Winds Village in Pincher Creek.

Donations in Barbara’s memory can be made to the Pincher Creek Humane Society, Box 2647, Pincher Creek, AB T0K 1W0.

Draft South Saskatchewan Regional Plan a Major Disappointment

If forced to choose one word to describe the recently released Draft South Saskatchewan Regional Plan (SSRP), that word would be “disappointing”. If using two words, it would be “terribly disappointing”.

When the process started, there was cautious optimism that the SSRP would begin to resolve or at least address conflicts between various land uses, but the draft plan is mostly “business as usual” and, in the case of the Castle, a step backwards.

The provincial government’s Land‐use Framework (LUF) was released in 2008. According to the government’s website, the “…Framework sets out a new approach for managing lands and natural resources to achieve Alberta’s long‐term economic, environmental and community goals.”

The SSRP is the second of seven regional plans to be developed as part of the LUF. In February 2011, the Regional Advisory Council (RAC) for the SSRP provided its advice to the government. From a conservation point of view, the RAC advice was disappointing and inadequate, but there was hope that the subsequent round of public input might improve the SSRP. Unfortunately, despite the public giving the government a strong conservation message, the current draft is even weaker than the RAC advice. For example, the RAC map showed generalized wildlife movement corridors, but those have disappeared, as have conservation areas in the eastern grasslands.

Two of the biggest issues in the South Saskatchewan region, and major concerns in the Castle, are logging and off‐highway vehicle (OHV) use. Alas, the draft plan entrenches and even expands logging and OHV use, while putting most everything else off to future rounds of planning.

Instead of beginning to resolve conflicts, the draft plan sets the stage for more valley‐by‐valley, and project‐by‐project confrontation.

For the Castle itself, you could say that the draft plan “corrects” the government’s “mistake” of declaring the Castle a Special Place in 1998.

According to the draft plan, the prime protection zone, which makes up about 45% of the Castle and is mainly at high elevation (the rocks and ice), would become a Wildland Park. This is really just a name change, however, with the current protection by policy simply changing to protection by legislation.

About 10% of the Castle, mostly in the West and South Castle valleys, would become a Conservation Management Area, but current activities, including logging, grazing, and OHV use, would continue.

The final 45% would become plain green zone, where virtually anything is permitted.

In effect, the draft plan would rescind the Special Places designation even before it was finally legislated.

What can you do? Attend any of the remaining public consultation sessions and express your views. Write, call, or e‐mail the Premier, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Resource Development McQueen, and your MLA. If possible, meet with your MLA in person.

Let them know what you think. Contact information can be found on the government website. CPAWS, Y2Y, and the AWA all have plenty of SSRP information on their websites.

For the CCWC’s part, we will continue to attend stakeholder consultations, and to work with our conservation partners to try to improve the plan. We are also examining possible legal actions.

Syncline Castle Trails Association By: David McNeill

At least some possible good news in the draft South Saskatchewan Regional Plan: it proposes to turn the Syncline Cross‐Country trail system into a Park.

The area, located southwest of Pincher Creek in the Bow‐Crow Forest, encompasses slightly more than 400 hectares. It was originally developed to its present status for the 1974 Canada Winter Games by the University of Lethbridge outdoor recreation department, lead by Hans Buhrmann. Up until the Ralph Klein era, it was managed and maintained by Alberta Forestry. But with his government’s severe budget cutbacks, the area was left to its own devices for a few years. Since 2002, the Syncline Castle Trails Association (SCaT) has been maintaining the trails, under the umbrella of Alberta Forestry. It has long been a Forest Land Use Zone (FLUZ), with off‐highway vehicle use prohibited.

It’s too early to know exactly what Park designation will mean, assuming it does eventually attain that status, but it would appear that its protection will be enhanced and some resources from Parks will be available to it.

Interpretive Kiosk

After 5 years of bureaucratic wrangling with Alberta's Public Lands Division over the availability of "Unoccupied Land" for the location of the CCWC's proposed Information Kiosk, the CCWC finally erected the Information Kiosk/Shelter this summer, a few hundred meters south of the bridge over the Westcastle River, upstream of Castle Mountain Resort. The purpose of the kiosk is to help inform the general public about the truly special features of the "Castle Special Management Area" (CSMA) and to promote a management regime that works towards, and is accountable for, the protection and conservation of the Castle's wilderness values over the long term.

As stated in the original application to the Public Lands Division: The purpose of this Kiosk would be to fulfill the Recommendation of the Special Places 2000 Local Committee in their “Living Document” at the time of the designation of the SMA and the specific designation of the West Castle Wetlands Ecological Reserve (WCWER) by Order in Council #357 in 1998. Recommendation 1(i) reads: “"The area should accommodate some limited development for interpretive/educational purposes”.

Since 1998, nothing has been pursued by any Government of Alberta Agency to see this recommendation implemented.

Furthermore, the legal survey boundaries of the Ecological Reserve were not identified on the publicly available maps and plans currently being used by the MD of Pincher Creek, Castle Mountain Resort or even Alberta Sustainable Resources Development at the time we originally applied for our lease in 2008 (that is 8 years after the Order‐in‐Council!). The Castle‐ Crown Wilderness Coalition has acted as the Volunteer Steward for the West Castle Wetlands Ecological Reserve (WCWER), under the Alberta Parks Branch’s Volunteer Stewardship Program, since its designation and provides a monitoring and reporting function to the Parks Branch under that Program, as well as coordinating a highly successful annual volunteer weed eradication effort for the Reserve. The CCWC has also attempted to provide the Land Managers of the CSMA generally with a number of "State of the Castle" reports over the years, aimed at highlighting the conservation measures needed to make the CSMA worthy of its name. The CCWC has worked steadily with the Parks Branch over the past few years to improve public awareness of this particular area. Our activities in this regard were formally recognized by the Minister of Parks this summer, with the CCWC receiving the Outstanding Volunteer Group Stewardship Award for Alberta.

Since its designation as a Special Management Area in 2001, and even previously since the implementation of a "voluntary" Access Management Plan (AMP) in 1996, there has been no concerted effort on the part of the Alberta Government to focus on any conservation targets that might help reduce the ongoing degradation of the wildland values of the area, particularly from ever‐expanding off‐road vehicle activities and random camping throughout the Castle. Even in the context of the AMP, which was supposed to be reviewed after 5 years and was supposed to be supported by a significant annual budget through Alberta Sustainable Resources Development, meaningful enforcement of the Plan has been insignificant, while the proliferation of trails has been extensive.

This is hardly surprising, given the absence of any meaningful signage for the public as they enter the Castle. Anyone can drive several kilometres or more into the mountains with zero awareness that they are in a supposedly "Special Management Area" with an "Access Management Plan" in place. Only when faced with locked gates (mostly at the furthest reaches of the headwaters) is there any reason for the average citizen to pay any attention at all to these much‐touted Government of Alberta designations.

Unfortunately our originally‐applied‐for location, across the bridge from Castle Mountain Resort and directly adjacent to the WCWER, as well as to the Municipality of Pincher Creek's Environmental Reserve, was rescinded by the Public Lands Division when they determined that the proposed lease area should become the "safe storage" area for CMR's explosives arsenal for avalanche blasting. Notwithstanding this change, the CCWC will still endeavour to work closely with the Parks Branch to ensure that the Wetlands Reserve gets its fair share of attention in our displays.

For the CSMA as a whole, we can only hope that information provided via the Kiosk may help inform the general public about the conservation significance of the area and contribute to a more respectful attitude in their enjoyment of what is still a relatively wild place, for all that it has been badly abused over the last couple of decades.

I apologize for not creating a Newsletter over the summer.

It has been very busy with preparing for the draft SSRP, working with the Oldman Watershed Council on the Headwaters Action Plan, Fish and Forests, summer programs and outreah and of course the ever increasing threats to the integrity of the Castle.

The jury is out on the results, but the campaign to bring attention to the heavy use of the Castle River watershed was delightful.

We were very sorry to have to cancel the Walk to the Headwaters; many we had hoped to work with felt they did not have the capacity to take part. However we are very grateful to the Land Stewardship Centre and the Oldman Watershed Council for allowing us to redirect the funding towards the building of the Interpretive Kiosk. Although the construction has been completed we are still working on the messaging to finish it off. We are looking forward to the unveiling in the spring, to coincide with the AGM and the CCWC’s 25th anniversary.

I realize that most of the Public Input sessions for the SSRP will have already taken place by the time you receive the Newsletter. Thank you to all of you who have taken part.

The input sessions are only one way to have your say. You can also complete the Regional Plan workbook either in hard copy or online. I do have a few hard copies at the office if you would like to pick one up. If find the workbook a bit to onerous, you can write a letter and submit it to the Land Use Secretariat and it will be given the same value as the workbook. The day was sunny, with a mild breeze, the temperature perfect for hiking and 51 people set off to climb Table Mountain, above Beaver Mines Lake.

Two and a half hours later, 48 people arrived at the top, while three had to turn back. The oldest on the trail was Hilah Simmons and the youngest, her granddaughter, Sadie Spranza. After lolling about or hiking to the real peak of Table, everybody gathered and hoisted a big banner, reading, “Protect the Castle”. At the same time Jim Cameron flew out of the Pincher Creek airport and within 10 minutes was flying overhead. In the seat beside him was Robin Pisko taking aerial shots of the banner and the hikers. Jim did eight fly‐over’s then returned to Pincher Creek. On the ground, Susan Guerra took several shots of the same group holding the banner and then it was all over. Everybody hiked back down to their waiting cars where they registered their return with Judy Huntley and Sybille Manneschmidt.

Many thanks to the Bert Riggall Environmental Foundation for its support, to Linde Farley for organizing the event, making the banner and in general keeping us all on track.

And thanks to Gord Petersen for doing his usual effective work with the media. Both Global TV and CTV sent crews out of Lethbridge and local media from Pincher Creek and the Crowsnest Pass came out to cover the event.

Unknown As stated earlier in the newsletter, the Culture & Community Spirit program, which has awarded grants on a percentage of donations, has been cancelled. This program was funded through Alberta Lotteries but it and many others through Alberta Lotteries have been cancelled. The Community Spirit grant has helped us for many years to offset core costs such as rent, phone, insurance and internet. Although the primary funding for the newsletter and hiking program comes from membership dues the Community Spirit program also helped to cover these costs.

Please remember to renew your membership; donations are very welcome as well.

The CCWC was selected as a finalist in the Mountain Equipment Co‐op’s Wild Bucks program this year.

Unfortunately we finished in 4th. Thank you to all of you who cast a vote for the CCWC. However, we would like to congratulate Wildsight who garnered 1st place, and $5,000 with 40% of the vote. We wish them the best as they move forward with the Flathead Park Extension.
