Gotcha, Dennis!

A 50th birthday isn’t one you can let slide by without some special attention. My husband was treated to a good deal of this over the past week, and now one last birthday wish from me.

We celebrated on Saturday, surrounded by friends from Pincher Creek area, Crowsnest Pass and as far as Calgary. It was a treat to spend the evening with people whose company we enjoy.

I’d like to thank Simply Catering for looking after dinner for almost 30 of our staff members and significant others (it was also our late Christmas party). Barry and Sophie Carney’s meal didn’t disappoint.

The birthday cake lived up to its name – it was definitely to die for! Thanks to Celeste Fouillard of Celestial Sweets for the decadent treats. We’ve been hoarding the last few pieces.

More than 60 people crammed into our basement and enjoyed an evening of fabulous entertainment by Adam and Nicki Schoening. It was a sing-along, play-along kind of evening.

We were pleasantly surprised to learn that Stan Skahl, the friendly fellow who delivers the Breeze to Crowsnest Pass each week, is not only a

guitar player but also a great singer.

Once I wound up with a guitar in my hands I played until my tender, unpractised fingers couldn’t take it any more. This was a great treat for me, and I apologize for ducking out of my hostess duties while indulging in some picking and singing.

There were gifts of wine and jokes galore – none were necessary or expected, but all were appreciated. Dennis is now armed to pass on some gag gifts to the next one with a big birthday!

Growing older is a privilege, and sharing years with good friends is a true gift.

Thanks to everyone who joined us for a memorable night.

This weekend we’ll switch to a cultural mode as we accompany Jaiden to her highland dance performances at Robbie Burns festivities in Stavely and Cowley. She’ll also provide a highland treat at the Pincher Creek Legion during the Saturday afternoon meat draw.

We’d love to see friends at these events as well.

I would love to thank the community of Beaver Mines for their kindness and all the generous things they have done for us. I recently had back surgery and our friends and neighbours are the best in the world, between bringing over meals, shovelling the driveway and sidewalks, and bringing their tractors in to plow the driveway.

It’s music festival time!

Crowsnest Pass Music Festival makes its return March 11 to 16.

New this year, adjudicator Jay Scraba of Calgary will offer advice to budding guitarists, banjo players, mandolin players and electric bassists. For voice students, we are excited to announce Heather Bedford-Clooney as adjudicator. She is a highly sought-after clinician from Edmonton. Derek Chiu of Calgary will adjudicate the piano entries, and Christine Bootland from Medicine Hat College Conservatory will critique the classical string and fiddle students.

Since 1957, Crowsnest Pass Music Festival has offered students in our area and neighbouring communities a chance to perform for qualified teachers and receive valuable feedback to help direct their studies. It is also a wonderful opportunity for community members to hear fine performances of a wide range of music, and to support young people on their quest for excellence. Many students have gone on to perform at the provincial level, and some have even gone on to pursue music careers on the international stage.

All music students are invited to enter the festival, regardless of instrument or style of music.

While it is geared more to school-aged children, adults and families are also welcome to register.

The festival has the ability to create new classes based on interest (such as improvisation, own composition, family performances) and is open to new ideas and new members.

Donations will assist fire victims

The fire occurred Jan. 14 at Foothills Trailer Park on Waterton Avenue. Pat Neumann, Pincher Creek’s fire prevention officer, was one of 18 firefighters on the scene to battle the blaze, with four or five others helping behind the scenes, he says.

Responders came from the Pincher Creek station as well as Beaver Mines and the Piikani Nation.

nine or 10 people out of their homes, while everyone else has returned since underground utilities were repaired. Luckily, no one was injured.

While social services may offer some assistance and the local thrift shop and Salvation Army in Fort Macleod are providing necessities for those affected, locals are expressing interest in doing what they can for the four families.

Pat says donating money is what helps the most, allowing the recipients to purchase what they need. Several service groups have already come forward with donations.

She was in a similar situation 10 years ago, and drew on that experience as a guide to taking action. Money can be donated to the fire victims’ account at any CIBC branch, and proceeds will be divided evenly among the families. Banker Tiffany Ratzloff says they’ve already received some donations, so please stop by if you’re able to help.

Andrea is also taking donated items, stored for now in Lundbreck. They already have enough couches and microwaves, but can use electronics of any kind, tables, dressers and chairs.

Feeling creative?

Try paint therapy

By Brad Quarin A new business in Pincher Creek is reaching out to women in southern Alberta, encouraging them to come try out a specialized line of paint products.

Funked Up is holding Paint Therapy this Friday, offering a night out and a workshop with paints they’ve introduced to Canada.

“You’re going to learn everything you need to know about the products,” says Funked Up owner Jessica Shepherd. “It’s going to be a night of fun … and also informational.”

Jessica’s business sells chalk, clay and mineral paints useful for furniture and home decor, taking online orders and shipping products across Canada. She patronizes the American Paint Company, whose products are new to Canada.

The paints are non-toxic and environmentally sound, dry fast and don’t smell even if you paint inside during wintertime, she says. They can be applied to canvas, wood, plastic and glass, with colours ranging from “neutral” to “funky.”

After searching for a hobby, Jessica found painting therapeutic. “I got addicted, so I have to share it with everybody,” she says. She opened her business last March.

To help people get to know the paints, she’s held well-received workshops in her garage.

Paint Therapy will be along those lines, introducing the paints to guests, who will have three projects during the workshop. For $175, you can paint on a mirror, a mason jar and a wooden crate, and take them home along with sample paint, brush and other products.

At the same time, they’ll Skype with a distributor of the American Paint Company and have DJ Chris Davis on hand.

While men can attend, Jessica envisions Paint Therapy as a ladies’ night out. Tickets are available at InStyle Salon in Ranchland Mall or online at www.funkedup.ca .

The goal is to spread Paint Therapy across Western Canada, as Jessica can visit other small communities in the region and share products you usually get in the city. She’s already received requests to bring Paint Therapy to Claresholm, Sparwood and Regina.

Daycare merges work and play

By Brad Quarin “I’m hoping that the community sees what a need the childcare program is,” says Leanne Wiebe, former director of Children’s World Daycare in Pincher Creek.

There’s good reason to believe people do see, as Children’s World Daycare received 23 nominations in the Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce Awards of Excellence. This support from parents and others in the community led to the daycare taking home the large-business award.

“We’re very, very grateful,” says assistant director Lorali Kettles. “It’s a very prestigious award, and people around the community congratulated me all the time.” Leanne feels the rest of the staff are enthusiastic as well.

The daycare hasn’t won many awards before, but individual staff members have at the provincial Early Learning and Child Care Professional Awards of Excellence. This reflects well on the daycare as a whole.

There are currently around 24 staff, almost all women aged 16 to above 50, and one boy who cleans part time. “We would love to have more males,” Lorali says.

She got involved herself nine years ago, looking for a job after graduating. “I started daycare and never left, because I loved it. I loved the children. It’s a very rewarding job.”

The youth of Children’s World Daycare are aged one to 12, and there are usually about 90 of them.

The daycare’s approach to the children is to support their development with SPICE, emphasizing the social, physical, intellectual, creative and emotional.

“It’s how children develop through play,” Leanne says. “You develop emotionally, physically, and we provide each child the opportunity to develop at their own pace.”

“Playing is their work,” Lorali says. There is no formal curriculum, and children’s ideas go into the programming.

For students, they have before-school and after-school programs. Among new activities for the youth at the daycare is yoga for ages three to six, consisting of poses and breathing techniques, which the children enjoy.

Although the daycare’s recent award was business-oriented, and employees are compensated from fees paid by parents, Children’s World Daycare is a non-profit organization. Any money left over after salaries, bills and supplies goes right back to daycare, Lorali says.

Children’s World Daycare was started in the 1980s by parents, many of whom had to work and needed the service. It is still governed by a board of parents and community members.

Crowsnest curlers have a busy lineup

By Brad Quarin Crowsnest Curling Club is sliding closer to the Miners Spiel and has already started with ladies’ nights at the Crowsnest Sports Complex in Coleman.

Lynnette Jessop, president of the club, finds this is shaping up to be a good year. “Curling is getting to be more and more popular,” she says. “With it being an Olympic sport, more people are watching it and are aware of it, so if anyone’s ever interested in trying it out, we’re a very friendly club.”

On Jan. 31, the club will have its Miners Spiel, where people curl in the dark with headlamps and glow sticks on brooms and rocks, and are encouraged to dress up as miners. At one point, a mine explosion will be simulated and the ice sheets will be evacuated.

“It’s a little bit of a silly night,” Lynnette says. “It’s a great way for people that are new to curling to come out and meet some of the people.”

This year, the Miners Spiel comes with pizza, included with the $5 drop-in fee. The event was a hit last year, drawing six teams, so they’re shooting for eight now. The spiel starts at 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, the curling club is having ladies’ nights at the Coleman arena. The next is set for this Friday, and they continue Feb. 7 and 28 and March 28. Women can drop in for $5, and, for the next two, may get in free if they bring a friend who’s new to curling.

“It’s really a way to encourage more women to get involved with curling, and we’re hoping that we can eventually develop a women’s curling league,” Lynnette says. Currently, female curlers play on mixed teams.

At the ladies’ night games, new curlers are teamed with coaches. There are also door prizes, such as gift certificates provided by local restaurants, coffee shops, liquor stores and other businesses that support establishing a women’s league.

Seniors have their own league, meeting every Monday and Thursday at 1 p.m. They recently played for cash prizes at their seniors bonspiel, says Rose Quarin.

There is also a family curling league, allowing parents to bring their children to play Mondays at 6 p.m.

On the horizon are the Shamrock Bonspiel and Bunny Bonspiel. The Shamrock Bonspiel, March 14 to 16, is an occasion to dress up in green and enjoy some beer while curling on mixed teams.

April 17 to 20, the Bunny Bonspiel is open to all and is one of the biggest events of the year for the club. This year, an added incentive will be a raffle, where a $5 ticket could get you a smart LED TV worth $1,000.

Generally, the curling club is doing well. There are about 130 people and the makeup of the club is changing. Thanks to mixed league co-ordinators Andrea Strandquist and Erika Farano, more young people are joining and most players in the club may be in their 20s and 30s. In the past, the majority were probably in their 40s and 50s.

“It’s getting to be a very young, fun club,” Lynnette says.

So come out, even if you don’t have a team — 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and 7 p.m. on Thursdays are ideal times. You can also watch the Olympics on TV in the arena lounge.

Faith endures at Fishburn

In the late 1800s, church services were held in homes and at the old Fishburn School. In February 1904, a group got together and decided a church should be built and donations started to come in.

The Varley family donated the land.

It is said that Fishburn had a United Church 21 years before its birth in 1925. Presbyterians, Methodists and Baptists all worked together to build a house of God. The first service was Aug. 28, 1904.

Over the years, many denominations have passed through those historic doors. Dec. 22, 2013 was no exception. A Christmas gathering was held at Fishburn United Church, 109 years later. Neighbours from many faiths participated. People came with team and wagon, feed trucks, vans and cars.

Thanks to all of you who continue to support our beautiful little church and made this a very special event.

Celebrate literacy next week

By Jenny Vandersteen Join us at the Co-op Ranchland Mall for our family literacy event on Thursday, Jan. 30, from 3:30 to 6 p.m.

A Scrabble tournament will kick off the event, and will continue every Thursday for four weeks, after which a winner will receive a new e-reader with money to spend on books. Other prizes will be awarded for second, third and fourth place.

There will also be stations throughout the mall with games, Play-Doh, Lego and other fun family activities, and gift bags will be handed out to participants. Bring your family, bring some friends and come participate in this celebration of literacy and learning!

Family Literacy Day, created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999, is held annually on Jan. 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to their development. Even 15 minutes a day can improve a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help parents improve their skills as well.

Family literacy programs focus on parents as the means to improve the reading and writing skills of all family members. By reading to children and engaging in fun literacy activities, parents keep their own skills sharp while strengthening the relationship within the family. This, in turn, encourages lifelong learning. There are many ways to strengthen your family’s literacy skills — all it takes is practising for 15 minutes every day by reading, writing, playing a game, following a recipe or even singing a song.

Research shows children have a better chance of becoming fully literate adults if reading is encouraged in the home. Many studies have shown that improving parents’ skills directly and positively affects the language development of children. Studies also show, beyond dispute, that children’s achievements in school improve with increased parental involvement in education.

The Pincher Creek Read/Write programs assist adults in our community to reach their potential through literacy. The tutor program matches volunteer tutors with adult learners from the Pincher Creek area.

Tutors, who are provided with training and resources, provide an invaluable service to the learners they work with and the community as a whole, as well as gaining a great sense of personal fulfillment.

Read/Write also works with English-language learners and provides tutoring and other programs for new Canadian residents. ESL classes, for those learning English as a second language, are run when we have enough interest.

The Books for Babies program ensures every newborn child in Pincher Creek receives a library membership and a canvas book bag, filled with suitable books and information for new parents on the importance of reading with their children.

Crestview residents show love for the Care Bears

By Brad Quarin Crestview Lodge residents showed they have a heart for the Care Bears, volunteers who drive for seniors and disabled people in Pincher Creek who can’t drive themselves.

Members of the lodge hobby club voted to donate $250 to the program, to show appreciation for a service many residents use, says Crestview manager Millie Loeffler. Money is raised by the club throughout the year.

Doris Rowledge of the Care Bears says the donation will help cover gas costs.

Support group revived

By Brad Quarin The Blairmore Lions Hall is a space for sharing on Thursdays at 7 p.m., as men of any age can meet and offer each other support.

Mark Morency is leading an effort to start a men’s support group in Crowsnest Pass, with its first run going until Feb. 6.

“Sharing is what it comes down to,” he says, as the group can share their feelings and experiences, “providing the support for everybody to find their own way.”

Such sharing can be difficult for men, but the group is meant to offer “a safe place.”

Mark recommends the group “for those people who are willing to look at something in themselves. No one really knows oneself like oneself.”

It’s hoped that in the process, there will be some personal growth, allowing people to deal with their pain and to develop coping methods.

While Mark is facilitating the meetings, he is not a counsellor. He has worked with and learned from a personal-development counsellor, who encouraged Mark to start a support group.

He saw a need in Crowsnest Pass and took his first crack at starting a group last year. The support group met six or eight times, drawing around six men, but he had to stop it for personal reasons.

To start anew, he approached the Lions Club and made a presentation on his idea for a group, hoping they would donate a venue. “It’s about helping the community,” Mark says, which he hoped would appeal to a service club, and the Lions were unanimous in choosing to lend their hall. Because the Lions Hall is donated, joining the support group is free.

While this is sort of a trial run lasting until February, it’s hoped the group will become permanent, perhaps running until summer.

A couple of people have commented about women being able to join the group, which Mark imagines could happen in time, maybe with couples meeting.

Haggis, anyone?

By Brad Quarin Everyone will be going Scottish on Jan. 25 with the help of pipers, dancing and some special cuisine served by Simply Catering. Robbie Burns Day takes place at Cowley Community Hall that evening, with a meal honouring Scotland’s heritage and revered poet.

Among the foods served at the event will be haggis, a traditional Scottish dish.

“We do it every year, and everybody eats it,” says Barry Carney of Simply Catering. “They like it. There’s a lot of people who just go crazy for it.”

You may have heard haggis is served in sheep stomach, but that’s not how it will be done on Robbie Burns Day. The food is mostly beef, a combination of liver, heart and oatmeal.

Barry doesn’t make the haggis himself, as it’s difficult and very expensive, so Simply Catering buys haggis for the night. He has tried it and likes it, comparing it to liver sausage and finding it not too spicy.

Besides the haggis, there will be roast beef, salads, “bashed neeps,” meaning turnips, “champit tatties,” meaning mashed potatoes, and cock-aleekie, which is chicken soup. For dessert, there will be scones and gingerbread.

Simply Catering doesn’t get to serve Scottish foods very often, but would if asked. Beef, pork and chicken are standard for them, while cock-aleekie is unusual. Despite this, Barry doesn’t find

preparing most Scottish foods much different from other meals.

They’re expecting between 60 and 100 people at the Cowley hall, which is an easy number for Simply Catering to cook for. They’ve done Robbie Burns Day for eight or nine years in Pincher Creek, and this will be the second time in Cowley.

Barry got involved because he’s a member of the Masonic Lodge of Pincher Creek and Cowley, which puts on the event. He finds it interesting and knows a little about the namesake, the 18thcentury poet who wrote popular pieces such as “Auld Lang Syne.”

“He was a character,” Barry says. Burns was covered a bit in school, and he’s learned more through Robbie Burns Day. Cocktails will be served at 6 p.m. and the program begins at 6:30.

Pipers will provide music, and Jaiden Panchyshyn of Pincher Creek and two fellow dancers from the Skye-Anna School of Highland Dance will perform throughout the evening.

Tickets are $25 per person and can be obtained by calling 403-627-8233 or 628-3808.

You can also pick up your tickets in person from the Shootin’ the Breeze office in Pincher Creek.

Simply Catering goes back 32 years, as a fun venture which turned into a full-time career for Barry and his wife, Sophie. They have a part-time staff of three and keep busy.

Drivers needed for Meals on Wheels

By Brad Quarin Crowsnest Pass can use some extra drivers to fill in for the regulars with Meals on Wheels.

“It’s giving back to your community,” says Kim Lewis of Family and Community Support Services.

The program is a commendable cause, delivering food to the homes of seniors, the ill, the disabled or others who have a hard time going to the store.

Often, the driver gets to know the seniors and can become their connection to the community, Kim says.

Currently, there are five regular drivers but only one spare driver to step in when a regular is sick or unavailable. If the program loses a regular, a spare driver can become regularly involved.

The drivers are out delivering from Monday to Friday during lunchtime, providing a warm meal, soup and dessert to those in need.

The meals are affordable at $6, with options for an extra sandwich at $1 or a larger meal for $7.50. The food is provided by York Creek Lodge, and is received by about 20 people in Crowsnest Pass.

To volunteer, you need a driver’s licence and vehicle and must fill out an application with a criminal-record check. There is compensation for gas. Call Kim at 403-562-8833.

Take a photographic journey

By Brad Quarin Yvan LeBel has a passion for photography and will be sharing it with everyone at Lebel Mansion in Pincher Creek on Thursday evening.

A Photographic Journey is a lecture with slides he has prepared, to share the stories behind how he took his pictures in Waterton and Pincher Creek.

In the process, he’ll talk about why he chose the composition of the photos and how he captured the movements and dimensions. Yvan hopes everyone who attends will have a better idea afterwards of how a good photograph is made.

He’s always loved photography since he started with it at age 10, and went to school to study journalism. After working at daily newspapers, he found them too hectic for his liking and became a freelance photographer.

The main thing he loves about photography may be capturing light. “Good pictures have to have light,” he says. Waterton and area has great light, giving him “the challenge to reproduce

that.”

Many of the photos he’ll be sharing at Lebel Mansion will feature nature and wildlife, but such subjects aren’t all he covers. He’s taken pictures of architecture and sports, which pose their own challenges, and he has a picture of Wayne Gretzky as a peewee hockey player.

Originally from Quebec, Yvan moved to the Pincher Creek and Waterton area for a time, before settling in Saskatchewan. He is back in Pincher Creek for a month.

“I knew the area,” he says. “This was the most comfortable place for me.” He’s familiar with the people here, too, so the lecture will be like an opportunity to “share with friends.”

There may be 80 photos in the slides, and he’ll talk about how he’s taken them from planes or encountered hikers and snowshoers who’ve helped carry his luggage. He’ll cover how he climbed Mount Cleveland in Glacier National Park with a friend and attached photographs together to create panoramas.
