My Little Corner Long-standing tradition has educational success defined by grades and teacher performance judged on the marks of one’s students.

While we value knowledge gained through family and community experiences, this is still predominantly an age of scorekeeping, with success measured in percentages.

Formal educators are now challenged to reconsider their thinking, to stretch themselves beyond rote teaching and connect with their students in a more meaningful way.

This requires a shift in our perception of education. We are creatures of habit and, to many, school classes are simply a defined curriculum filled with objectives students learn in a set way.

There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all method to implement change – it will be challenging. Teachers face large groups of students with diverse skills, needs, desires and dreams.

Technology and teaching methods are changing constantly, as are opinions of which way of doing things is most desirable and effective.

As the first semester of the school year wraps up, many students and their parents are exploring options to best meet personal desires and goals.

Scheduling classes must be a nightmare for administrators, and available course options aren’t always what students want or expect. Distance learning, special projects and work experience are popular ways to customize education.

Last fall, Matthew Halton High School staff took things a step further with a new project called Experiential Learning Week.

To be honest, I wasn’t keen on the idea at the time. I saw value in the hands-on, out-of-classroom experiences being presented, but worried about academic repercussions.

It seems inevitable that teachers and students are cramming work in at the end of every semester to ensure all curriculum elements have been covered — how much would this loss of class time hurt those with a heavy course load?

As with any first-time effort, there were glitches, hiccups and a various degrees of satisfaction. When it was all said and done, students,

Personally, I was still on the fence.

A conversation last week with off-campus co-ordinator John Taylor changed my perception considerably. He has a unique viewpoint both as a teacher and as the parent of a student at MHHS. I shared my concerns and he listened. He shared his passion for evolving education and I listened. I feel I have a much better understanding of the intent behind the program and John’s enthusiasm was not lost on me.

Wouldn’t it be interesting to have one edition of the Breeze completely produced by students each semester?

Look at the photos on the front and back pages this week — young bowlers are coached by adult volunteers, grandparents take to the ice to help little ones learn to skate, parents read with their children and advanced students share their expertise with beginners.

Experiential learning is already going on all around us and diverse educational opportunities within the community can be more meaningful than taking notes from a chalkboard.

Skills learned in the classroom can be taken a step further as students are empowered to try them out in real-life situations. Everyone has a chance to shine in an area where they feel confident and even to test the waters for potential careers.

It’s a fundamental shift in action — combining experiential learning with personalized education plans and flexibility to provide amazing opportunities for our kids. This is a concept in its infancy, and I’m certainly curious to see where it goes.

Changes for Crooked Creek Campground Waterton Natural History Association will no longer be operating the Crooked Creek Campground, located east of Waterton Lakes National Park.

Operation of the campground was considered to be a “non-compliant” business by the Canada Revenue Agency. In order to maintain the organization’s charitable status, WNHA was directed to cease operating the campground.

Crooked Creek Campground is located six kilometres east of the Waterton Lakes National Park gates. It has 78 sites, 32 of which were rented by the season. It was generally open from early May to late October.

As part of the terms of the original purchase agreement, WNHA must sell the campground back to the Province of Alberta, which will decide the future of the campground operations.

This decision was announced at WNHA’s annual general meeting on Jan. 11, and took effect immediately. The WNHA board regrets the inconvenience to the many seasonal campers as well as visiting campers touring southern Alberta.

Exciting semester in store for adult learners

By Brad Quarin It’s a new semester for the Crowsnest Pass Adult Education Association and Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council, giving locals an avenue to learn more.

“We’ve got a lot of new courses and a lot of new programs happening this calendar, which is exciting,” says Jenny Vandersteen of the adult learning council.

A number of classes are making their debut in Crowsnest Pass, too, and Crowsnest Pass Adult Education Association co-ordinator Toni Gfrerer is feeling good about this semester.

A few new courses being offered in the Pass concern computers, including teaching Windows 8 and guiding non-profit groups in creating e-newsletters. Toni says she’s tried to make the courses useful to businesses and organizations.

Some classes are designed to help seniors with basic computer skills and Facebook. For $5, you can get half an hour of one-on-one computer tutoring and learn whatever you wish.

In health and wellness, the new Better Choices, Better Health class in March will cover healthy eating and dealing with pain and exhaustion. It will be free to attend.

With adult education, Alberta Learning focuses on employment enhancement and community issues, but to Toni, the most exciting programs being offered are general-interest courses. These aren’t part of Alberta Learning, so aren’t funded, but some — like the cooking courses — are quite popular.

The year ends with the seniors conference on June 5, with guest Gordon Colledge speaking about how “life is for living.” Gordon has done the conference once before and is back by popular demand.

In Pincher Creek, the new cross-country ski club has already started, but it’s not too late to join. To reach out to men, adult learning is also offering mountain-biking and fly-fishing courses.

Among the colourful new classes being offered is cooking with coconuts, which Jenny explains stemmed from interest in coconuts as a healthy food. “There’s so many ways it can be used,” she says.

For seniors, a University of the Third Age is being formed, where seniors can teach each other anything they want for free.

The Am I Too Sensitive? class, being offered in both Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass in March, is meant to identify who is too sensitive and alleviate that difficulty. In both places, this is being taught by Benita Richardson, a Reiki instructor.

Making a comeback is a class on Facebook for business, which was a hit last semester and will be lengthened to two evenings in February.

The beekeeping workshop, held once before and successfully, will also return in April. Anyone who wants to learn how to keep a hive and harvest honey can come. There may not be an enormous population of beekeepers in Pincher Creek now, but Jenny says there’s room for growth here.

On May 3, the seniors fair will return for a second year, with entertainment, a guest speaker and lunch. It’s not too early to register.

The coffee group for English-language learners at Mrs. P’s on Thursdays is also back on, as is the series of speakers on wildlife at the Pincher Creek library.

There seems to be a good level of interest in adult learning in both communities. In Crowsnest Pass, there were 271 enrolments last semester, Toni says. Jenny says they haven’t had to cancel any classes yet for lack of interest.

The courses can be taught by anyone with a skill or talent to share.

Grad dinner for community builders

By Brad Quarin Next Monday is graduation day for Pincher Creek residents who’ve completed a program designed to strengthen leadership in Alberta’s rural communities.

The evening, including a ceremony and potluck dinner, starts at Lebel Mansion at 6 p.m.

“Everybody who participated learned something useful,” says volunteer co-ordinator James Van Leeuwen. There were 150 people in the area, including the MD of Pincher Creek, Waterton, Cowley and the Piikani Nation, who registered.

Graduation day will celebrate those among the 150 who’ve completed the program, having gone through three months of videos, readings and worksheets. Much of this was done on the Internet, but James also arranged for groups to meet in the Pincher Creek library, Ranchland Mall and Waterton.

The idea of as many as 150 new community leaders fits a modern view of leadership. “We need a new paradigm for leadership,” he says, one that’s more decentralized. Focus needs to shift from those in power in government and business, to making everyone a leader. “We can help the community to respond to these changes.”

In a way, the vision of becoming “a can-do community” harks back to Pincher Creek’s pioneer past.

The people who registered are mostly adults of various ages, and some youth. There was a fairly good gender balance.

After people arrive at Lebel Mansion, the potluck supper starts at 6:15, followed by the ceremony at 7. Ian Hill, the business leader who created the program, will host the ceremony.

Members of the committee will also be talking about the possibility of developing a new agency in Pincher Creek. James is leaving the board of Pincher Creek and District Chamber of Commerce, in hopes of building on this program with a permanent agency developing community leadership.

After the ceremony and presentation, the evening will be a social occasion. The event will be open to everyone and free to attend. There will be coffee, tea and juice.

Graduates will hopefully be more able to take initiative in one of many possible ways, as individuals or in groups. Some will be volunteers, but those in government and business can learn from the program as well. The program provides insight on one leading his or her own life.

There may be various community issues for graduates to address. “You take an initiative — it’s not like anybody has to wait for permission,” James says.

The program started here when James, feeling there was merit in Ian Hill’s work, contacted the Becoming a Community Builder group on behalf of the chamber of commerce. He then put together a committee of community members to implement the program, and through sponsorships and donations, they had no problem raising the $7,500 required.

James invites all to have a role in establishing his agency for community leadership.

No Particular Topic showcases locals

By Brad Quarin Emilie Brien is looking forward to Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery’s reopening with No Particular Topic.

The annual open show is held by the Allied Arts Association to showcase artists of the area.

The reception is at the gallery on Saturday, from 1 to 3 p.m.

“I’m really excited to be part of it. I just started showing off my pieces,” she says. “A little overwhelming, too.”

Drawing and painting has been a hobby for her since she was a child. However, her work was never exhibited until Blairmore artist Jean Blackall saw it and encouraged her to share it.

“She’s been a great mentor for me,” Emilie says.

Her first show was a juried one last summer. She paints in a surrealistic style, employing lots of colours and drawing inspiration from nature.

This is her first time in No Particular Topic, for which she has two paintings, “Maree de Couleur” and “Vie secrète de l’eau.”

She was inspired by the fall and wind in the community, as well as flowing water she’s seen in the Crowsnest River. She applied for No Particular Topic and was surprised when “Maree de Couleur” wound up on the gallery’s poster. “That’s amazing, for sure,” she says. “It’s all very new for me.”

Conversely, Sherry Chanin, who teaches art at Crowsnest Consolidated High School, is no stranger to the show. She tries to submit something every year, and feels it’s a great program.

“I like that it is the artist’s choice to submit whatever it is that they’re currently working on,” she says. “I like that they offer a forum for artists to show their work in.”

There’s merit in having both open and themed shows, as the latter can “stretch” an artist into new territory.

Sherry is a landscape painter, in a style balancing realism and abstraction, inspired by the beauty of the area. She says she always knew she would be an artist, and went to the Alberta College of Art in Calgary, graduating with dis-

tinction. She then received fine arts, art history and education degrees from the University of Calgary.

“I think you need food for the soul, to be spiritually recharged,” she says. “That comes from a sense of esthetic appreciation.” That’s why she loves art, and she compares “visual harmony” to musical harmony. “The colours and combinations are musical chords.”

For No Particular Topic, she has two paintings, one of a rock cliff, intended to become part of a series. “I like the layers that you see, they sort of embody time,” she says.

Her other painting is of Red Rock Canyon in Waterton, specifically an area she loves and visits every summer near the waterfalls. “It’s a sanctuary,” she says.

“We’re doing this for the community,” says Krisztina Wood, managing director of the association.

With no required subject matter, this year’s show has drawn 24 artists with 43 works, predominantly paintings and photographs. After the reception, with tea and coffee and a chance to meet the artists, the works will stay up until March 2.

While the No Particular Topic works hang on the walls, the gallery will also celebrate the art of chili with its 10th annual chili bowl festival on Feb. 8.

A fundraiser for the art gallery, the festival allows visitors to enjoy a bowl of chili cooked by local people, including members and friends of Allied Arts. You get to take home the bowl, made and donated by the Pass Pottery Club.

Last year, all 200 bowls were given out in only 45 minutes, with the festival being a “mad rush.” As a result, there will be 250 bowls this year.

The festival starts at 11 a.m. at the gallery, and runs until 2 p.m., unless the chili runs out before then. Admission is $12, or $7 for a child under 10.

The gallery is located at 14733 20th Ave. (Highway 3) in Frank.

Loppet gets a facelift this year

By Brad Quarin For its fourth year, the Flight of the Crows Loppet, a cross-country ski race in the Allison-Chinook Recreation Area outside Coleman, will have some changes.

In addition to altered, longer trails for the adult races, jackrabbit fun sprints are being added for the younger skiers, to encourage more children to try out cross-country skiing. The sprints, which are free to enter and start at 11:45 a.m. on Feb. 1, will be a blast for spectators as well.

“We thought it would be fun for the parents and grandparents to come out and watch the kids having fun on skis,” says Deb Whitten, president of the Crowsnest Pass Cross-Country Ski Association.

The loppet will keep its 1.5-kilometre race, an ideal distance for skiers 16 and under. It starts at 11 a.m.

However, the eight-kilometre and 16-kilometre races for adults have been altered to nine and 18, both starting at 1 p.m. The change wasn’t intended to make the races more challenging. “It’s already challenging enough,” Deb says. Instead, the modified trails will give the skiers a change in scenery.

Feedback from previous loppets also led to an adjustment in the schedule, with medals for children in the 1.5-kilometre race to be awarded earlier, before 1. Last

year, a number of families left before the medal presentations. The medals are made by Crow Works and are given to males and females in all categories.

All the same, Deb emphasizes that awards aren’t the point of Flight of the Crows. “The medals are secondary to the companionship of skiing with a lot of different people on a set course and challenging yourself,” she says.

“The loppet is a really great way to celebrate our love of cross-country skiing and the outdoors in winter.”

Volunteers are needed for the event, including course marshals to make sure the trails are flagged and others to see if anyone has gone off-track. There’s need for timing teams and people to work the catering truck, where burgers, fruits, coffee and hot chocolate will be served.

Volunteer orientation will be held today.

Last year was the best for the ski festival, with 50 people taking on the trails and having a good time.

There’s no need to register beforehand for the races.

One can find them by taking Highway 3 to Allison Creek Road and turning north, and then taking the left fork at the cattle guard.

Entrance fees are $5 per participant 12 and under and $15 for everyone else, though no family needs to pay more than $35.

By Brad Quarin After recently marking 50 years in business, Fantin’s Funeral Chapel in Blairmore has been recognized by Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce for outstanding customer service.

Darrell Sydora, who owns Fantin’s with his wife, Moo, acknowledges it’s a surprise, “because it’s an industry that people don’t want to keep in the front of their minds.” That makes it all the more special. “We must have overcome that barrier of trepidation.”

Customer service is their focus and is important to many other businesses, but since Fantin’s has been recognized by their peers, it means they’ve exceeded expectations, he says.

He describes their customer service as “very individual and personal,” as they’re always “trying to discover what the families require of us.” Since funerals have evolved into celebrations of life, and each life is different, there is no typical service that Fantin’s provides.

The staff are delighted with the award, as customer service is a team effort. Darrell says the workplace is pretty egalitarian, as they share workspaces and he doesn’t have an office.

About 11 people work at Fantin’s, and they all wear many hats. Funeral attendants can help with hospital transfers and Darrell sometimes vacuums and mows grass. That’s a phenomenon often found in small businesses, and it’s also a help to anyone who wants to climb the ladder.

They all deal with customers, who are often in a vulnerable position. “We have to help them through that,” he says. “That’s what we’re here for.”

However, there is no one way an employee must interact with customers.

“Everyone has their own approach,” Darrell says, as he wants his staff to be sincere. “Technical skills can be learned, but the heart of the person has to be there and has to be genuine.”

Some at Fantin’s are talkative and lead discussions, while others are more openly emotional and may cry during funerals. He particularly remembers one service where he was going down the aisle in church and saw a funeral director by the casket. “Tears were flowing down her cheeks — it was a very tough moment for her.”

Customer services may be extended in the future, to adapt with the times. Fantin’s may become more involved with social media, including Facebook and Twitter, to reach out more to youth. They have a website and condolences page already.

Darrell thanks not only the chamber but all of Crowsnest Pass for the award, as he feels community support has been vital.

The award is on display at the funeral chapel, visible to anyone who comes through the door.

Grizzly monitoring update

By Brad Quarin The winter speaker series teaching us about our biosphere is back at the Pincher Creek library, starting with the latest from Andrea Morehouse and the Southwest Alberta Grizzly Bear Monitoring Project.

This time, Andrea will be videoconferencing from Edmonton, with her presentation starting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

The project has been an interesting one in gauging the grizzly bear population in southwest Alberta, by collecting and preserving bear hair.

Researchers have attached barbed wire to bear-rub objects to snag the hair.

On Tuesday, Andrea will use PowerPoint to talk about the 2013 field season, which ended in mid-November, as well as the data for 2012. They had found at least 122 grizzlies in the area, higher than the 2007 estimate of 51.

The hair collected in 2013 was handed to genetics labs in mid-December, and Andrea expects results from those by June. She doesn’t know what to expect, except that it probably won’t be as great an increase in numbers as last time.

Looking back, the 2013 field season went smoothly for the researchers, Andrea says. They had set up new rub objects on private and public property and, for the first time, were able to check all of them an equal number of times. Sometimes they spot bears, but there haven’t been any serious encounters.

The next field season is planned for May, and Andrea hopes they’ll keep up their good performance from 2013. This will be the last field season, after which 2015 will see analysis and writing.

There will be other interesting presentations every Tuesday at 7 p.m. until March 25, thanks to the library, the Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council and Alberta Parks. On the horizon are lectures on raptors, Beauvais Lake Provincial Park and butterflies. As with last year, you can also watch by videoconference from other libraries.

In loving memory of

Marion Vanoni 1960 – 2014 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Marion Vanoni, beloved wife of Darrell Vanoni, of Blairmore. Marion was called to be with the Lord on Jan. 22, 2014, while receiving compassionate care at the Pincher Creek hospital. She celebrated 53 years of life.

Marion Anita Fontana was born on May 4, 1960 in Coleman, to proud parents, Benjamin and Veronica Fontana. One of three children, Marion was raised with a great appreciation for her family, her friends and her faith. She took pride in any task she entered into.

She was a lovely young lady who was meticulous, gentle and caring, and she made a tremendous impression on a dashing young man, Darrell Vanoni. At a very early age, Darrell knew Marion to be the only true love in his life. His utter devotion and respect for her won her heart, and they pledged their love in holy matrimony on July 23, 1988.

Her determination and intelligence allowed her to achieve much in life. She graduated from CCHS and SAIT and gained employment in several occupations, but her latest position as the chief financial officer for the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass provided her with the most challenges and rewards. She would be the first to tell you that she could not always please everyone, but she always did what she thought was best for this community. Her passion and dedication for others is what made her so very special.

Marion loved spending her free time tending to her flower garden, enjoying the peace and tranquility of her backyard fish pond, crafting and the occasional round of golf. She volunteered countless hours to organizations and committees, working diligently towards making the Pass a better place. She put her heart and soul into every project and event.

She was a loving wife to Darrell and they shared many joys and adventures. Their love is eternal and may God welcome Marion into His heavenly kingdom and give strength to Darrell in the trying days to come.

Those left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life include her loving husband, Darrell Vanoni, of Blairmore; her sister, Bernice (Tom) Bragg, and their daughter Lisa (Neil) Bookout; her sisters-inlaw Paulette (Don Riva) Pederson and family, Irma (Mike) Williams and family, and Jackie Bueckert and family; her nieces, nephews and extended family; as well as the many friends that she made throughout her lifetime.

She was predeceased by her parents, Benjamin and Veronica Fontana; her brother, Ronald Fontana; and her mother-in-law and fatherin-law, Aldo and Marie Vanoni.

The memorial mass was held on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, with Fr. Ben Marino as celebrant. Cremation occurred at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel’s private crematorium.

Paul Friedrich Eggert Paul Eggert passed away from this life, Jan. 24, 2014, leaving behind his beloved wife of 50 years, Anna, his daughter Christiane (Bradley Bustard), treasured grandchildren Isaak and Aiden, daughter Heike, and many dear friends.

Paul was predeceased by his parents, Paul and Grete, and brother Christian.

Paul and Anna married in their native Germany in 1963, and opened a butcher business shortly after Paul earned his master licence.

The high-quality meat and sausage business was a success.

Property development became the next step, and construction projects began in their town of Ahrensburg, Germany, leading to a very busy life.

The birth of their two daughters followed, along with Paul becoming a town councillor.

By the mid-1970s, holidays with their young family brought them to Canada. For six weeks they toured British Columbia and Alberta — an experience they would never forget. In 1976, they purchased a farm in the Summerview area and, two years later, moved the family from a small city in Germany to rural southern Alberta.

Beyond his wife and family, Paul’s passion was cattle. He shared his passion with lively discussions of the cattle business. A favourite activity was hosting numerous banquets, serving Alberta prime rib beef as the main course.

He was always on the lookout for another reason to host people in his home.

Paul was well known locally as the German man wearing a cowboy hat while driving the local roads in a Mercedes. There are countless stories of his adventures and mishaps, at least partly owing to his stubborn German nature.

He was actively involved in politics with the Conservative party, as well as a member of the Pincher Creek Lions Club and, most recently, of Rotary International.

His wide circle of friends ensured an active and extensive social life throughout southern Alberta.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, at Foothills Community Church, 1200 Ken Thornton Blvd., Pincher Creek, with Pastor Andrew Craig officiating.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank the fabulous doctors and nursing staff of the Pincher Creek Health Centre.

When you wish upon a star ...

A month ago, we were driving south to Waterton to spend an evening with friends when we saw a shooting star cross the night sky. We then remembered there was supposed to be a meteor shower that night, but most of it wouldn’t be visible until 4 a.m. due to the brightness of the moon. The waxing moon had been spectacular.

Whenever I see a shooting star, I think of that song Jiminy Cricket sings in Pinocchio: When you wish upon a star Makes no difference who you are Any thing your heart desires Will come to you If your heart is in your dream No request is too extreme When you wish upon a star As dreamers do …

I was thinking it’s funny that scientists can predict when meteor showers will happen. I mean, it is outer space after all. So I looked into it.

It turns out the meteor showers can be predicted.

The Geminid shower occurred from Dec. 12 to 14. The Quadrantids occur between Jan. 1 and 5.

The Leonid shower occurs around Nov. 17 each year. The Perseid shower occurs on Aug. 12 each year.

Meteor showers are usually named after the constellation from which they seem to originate, even if that constellation is many light years away from the origin of the meteors. The Geminid meteor shower is named after the constellation Gemini the Twins, and originates near the stars Pollux and Castor. While this meteor shower is more visible in the northern hemisphere, it can be seen in the southern hemisphere.

Meteor showers result from a planet interacting with celestial debris that seems to have originated or radiated from one location. From what I understand, in the case of the Geminid meteor shower, the debris came from the five-kilometre-wide asteroid 3200 Phaethon.

Apparently, when 3200 Phaethon travels its orbit, it comes very close to the sun every 1.43 years.

The heat from the sun causes the asteroid to crumble a bit, and debris is shed into the asteroid’s orbital path.

When the orbital paths of 3200 Phaethon and Earth come close together or intersect, the debris that is in the asteroid’s orbital path enters the upper layer of Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of about 130,000 km/h. At that speed, the particles

are vaporized, showing up as a meteor shower: the Geminid meteor shower.

During the Geminid shower, between 50 and 100 bright yellow meteors may be observed per hour at the peak. Most of these meteors are debris the size of a dust particle, or a grain of sand, and burn up when they hit the atmosphere. Meteors don’t usually hit Earth’s surface. During a meteor storm, more than 1,000 meteors may be visible per hour.

Here are some tips for viewing meteor showers: Sit in the moon shadow, make sure you can see a lot of sky, get away from artificial lights and buildings, dress appropriately for the weather, take a lawn chair or blanket or both, and take something warm to drink. Also remember to give yourself lots of time to view the meteors, as they may come in bursts, and your eyes may take up to 20 minutes to adjust to the dark.

If you’re lucky and you time it right, you may even see some earthgrazer meteors. Earthgrazers are best seen in early evening. They are slowmoving meteors that travel horizontally across the sky.

The next predicted meteor shower is the Lyrids, which occur around April 22. What will you wish for?
