The Breeze Mailbox Everything’s coming up roses at Lebel The Oldman Rose Society has created a formal public rose garden over the past four years to share with Pincher Creek and area communities. The Lebel Mansion site of the rose garden has seen a transformation from a grass lawn to circular rose beds with wide pathways leading through the garden. Wrought-iron garden benches encourage visitors to take in the beauty and fragrance of the roses.

In July, brick pillars were built at the entrance leading into the garden. Future plans include three wrought-iron arches over the sidewalk to support climbing roses, signage boards, and brochures identifying and describing the roses.

The last selections of the 51 hardy roses were planted during the spring by our 24 members.

During the past year, our group hosted a rose speaker from the Calgary Rose Society, with a slide show of Roses Down Under. Meetings were held at members’ homes for ordering roses, including miniature roses, to plant in our own gardens. Garden tours included a tulip tour, a garden party, Roses 101, participation in Environmental Reuse Fair, building the “Rose” scarecrow at the Co-op Harvest Festival, along with fundraising for the projects.

The year ended with a rose photo contest and the Rose Society Christmas supper.

A fundraising garage sale will be held May 31 to prepare for an exciting grand opening of the rose garden, to be held this summer!

The Oldman Rose Society of Southern Alberta is holding its annual general meeting and Valentine social on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Fields Store (in the Co-op mall). Anyone interested in roses and becoming a member is invited to attend. Everyone welcome!

4-H Light Horse Club learns equine first aid Dr. Amanda Elliott, from Country Vets, has come to Silver Reins 4-H Light Horse Club twice (Nov. 16, 2013 and Jan. 18, 2014) to do theory presentations on equine first aid.

Some of the things Dr. Elliott taught us about were dentistry, hoof care, de-worming, regular temperature, feed (if they are hard/easy keepers), colic and wounds.

We enjoyed Dr. Elliott lots and would like to thank her very much for taking the time to come and teach us!

New optometrist focuses on patient care

By Brad Quarin All eyes are on Pincher Creek’s new optometrist, Dr. Laura Kennedy.

Laura arrived in town and began working with Dr. Bart Anderson at Pincher Creek Eye Clinic in August.

“I really like the community of Pincher Creek,” she says. She’s familiar with small towns, being from Simpson, Sask., which has a population of 100.

She took an interest in optometry because of a history of vision loss in her family, and was inspired by the persistence family members showed in battling it.

Last spring, she received her doctorate at the University of Waterloo, after a mission to Peru and an internship in Texas. In 2012, with a group called Volunteer Optometric Service to Humanity, she went to Peru to provide eye exams and glasses for free.

“It really opened my eyes to a different culture, a different socioeconomic situation,” she says. “And I wanted to help provide eye care to people who can’t reach it.”

Being engaged to Alec Chisholm, a physiotherapist at the local hospital, she became acquainted with Pincher Creek.

Bart Anderson, who’s based in Cardston but has been practising in Pincher Creek since 1992, asked her to become the second optometrist at the clinic. He finds Laura is fitting in fine.

“She’s wonderful, everybody loves her,” he says.

In Pincher Creek she’s practising general optometry, offering eyeglasses, contact fittings and other eye-care services. “My goal would be to be here to provide good patient care,” she says.

With fiddling, hiking, canoeing and other outdoor activities as hobbies, she’s becoming more involved in the community.

Laura and Bart rotate at the clinic, with Laura being in on Monday mornings, all day Tuesdays and Thursdays, and Friday afternoons.

Successful year for Peigan Friends Along the River

By Brad Quarin Peigan Friends Along the River had another successful year, saving fish by returning them to the Oldman River. The fish rescue marked its 23rd year in October, with founder Harley Bastien of the Piikani Nation not having imagined the project would be so enduring.

“We feel we’ve accomplished a great deal,” he says. In October, around 40 volunteers saved 3,700 fish. Over the years, they’ve saved 300,000 fish, with volunteers putting in 10,000 hours.

This is remarkable given the project’s modest beginnings. “I started it out of moral conscience,” he says, after observing what was happening when the provincial government turned off the water supply. A number of fish found themselves trapped in the canal. Harley did not like animals dying needlessly, calling it “a waste of life,” and desired to help nature.

“I decided to do something about it.”

He established the group Peigan Friends Along the River to advocate restoring the Oldman River valley. “We’ve done a lot of pioneering work in terms of awareness,” he says. In 1990, he was

one of nine people who went out with buckets to take fish out of the canal. Looking back, Harley says they were too few in number and their tools were lacking.

But they’ve grown much from there. As more people took notice and more money was raised, the fish rescue obtained better equipment and more volunteers.

They use nets to scoop fish out of the canal, moving them to five-gallon buckets and then holding tanks for their trip back to the Oldman River. It’s “very labour-intensive” work, requiring at least 20 people. Harley says that every year they get most of the fish and some useful information for the Alberta government.

The rescuers include around 12 regulars, with every year bringing new volunteers from Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and other communities. Some years, outside groups pitch in, such as the Scouts or a busload of people from Shell Canada. They’ve had as many as 100 people at a time. This October, volunteers came from Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and Lethbridge, and the Fish and Game group from Fort Macleod

joined in.

In 2000, the group experienced victory when the federal, provincial and Piikani governments agreed to take steps to restore the valley. Feeling their work was complete, Peigan Friends Along the River was largely dissolved, except for the fish rescue and a cultural event every summer.

The fish rescue is not funded by any government, as Harley says they don’t need government money. They’ve raised cash for the endeavour in various ways, including bottle drives. Expenses include the equipment and lunch for the volunteers.

Peigan Friends Along the River has received some attention, being finalists for Alberta’s environmentalist Emerald Awards. National Geographic put the fish rescue on its Crown of the Continent geotourism map, with Harley remarking they have good company there with the province’s largest environmental attractions.

“It’s a good feeling.”

Harley invites everyone to come out for the next fish rescue, typically held on the second Saturday of October.

Champion mathlete earns a night out with the Flames

By Brad Quarin Young people from all over the world can practise and compete in math through the website Mathletics. Alyssa Dollman of Pincher Creek heard about the website last year at school, and began using it from home and the classroom.

Through points collected in numerous competitions, Alyssa, currently in Grade 5 at Canyon School, found herself the top mathlete in Canada for a week in January. Her family reaped the rewards, gaining four tickets to a Calgary Flames game.

“You should have seen my jaw drop,” she says. She was proud of her achievement and pleased with her prize.

The website features all kinds of math, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, short division and graphs, at various levels of difficulty. Children can compete with random people, friends or the computer.

Alyssa has reached the third of 20 levels, with upper levels like level 20 meant for older students.

Some of the material is challenging, but she’s been good at math since Grade 3, when she was introduced to multiplication. Still, her favourite subject in school is art.

Mathletics ranks the top 100 students in Canada and the world every week, and on Jan. 10 a classmate pointed out Alyssa was seventh in Canada. She went back to the website to work her way to fifth place, and continued at home for over an hour until she collected 4,000 points. This put her in the top spot nationwide for the week.

“It was awesome,” she says.

Earlier, someone had donated four hockey tickets to Canyon School for a top student, and she was able to receive them after school. She’s a fan of hockey, so it was exciting to get tickets for herself, her mom and dad and her sister, Cassandra. Alyssa has been to hockey games before but was too young to remember them, says her mom, Brandi.

“I’m pretty proud for her,” Brandi says, and she feels her daughter had a good time on her way to the top.

February is here now and the New Year’s resolutions are either firmly in place or long gone. ’Twas ever thus.

In January, we managed to do a few things right. The weather was bright and sunny for the board and general meetings, both held on Jan 14. During the general meeting, incumbent board members remained at the helm except for Lorriene Chapman, who served as vice-president but is now bogged down with other commitments. She is replaced by Carol VanGilder. The rest of the executive remains as follows: chair, Leny Mace; secretary, Marina May; treasurer, June Spak; and Karen Buhrmann, representing the duplicate bridge club.

Volunteer appointees were Rae Olds and Virginia Belcourt as social events co-ordinators and Joyce McFarland for public relations. A huge vote of thanks to all who served, and continue to serve, in their own niche. I kid you not; meetings and board decisions are humbug sometimes. We can only learn to observe so that one is better equipped to step up to the plate when the opportunity arises.

On the last Friday of the month, Jan. 31, we held our regular bingo at 1:30 p.m., and this will continue every month as one of our regular programs. Everyone is welcome.

Please note a change of dates for the noon soup-and-a-bun lunches during February. The first was served on Feb. 4, and the second will be on the third Tuesday, Feb. 18. These quick and easy lunches, at $5 per person, are a great way to get together with a friend, or come alone and find some of the old gang lining up for the homemade soup. Again, everybody is welcome.

A quick heads-up for the crib tournament planned for March 8. We are planning ahead so it won’t get tangled up in too many other events. It is on a Saturday, so you don’t really have to do a wash, get your hair done or have a root canal. Tell your kids to get a babysitter and plan to join us on the wild side. As always, everyone is welcome. We will serve lunch at noon.

The 2014 memberships are rolling in and we appreciate your support. A tax receipt can be issued for all donations other than memberships.

Almost forgot, Alyre Therriault is happy at home, doing OK, and driving his family crazy. However, he now has a home-care lady who can beat the tar out of him playing crib, so he hasn’t too much time to dwell on missing his friends at the centre. We miss him, too.

That hawk is of interest to the team because it’s endangered, one of the biggest North American hawks and “probably one of the most majestic,” Erin says. The team feels people would like answers on why this hawk is now fewer in numbers.

Adam says he’ll have plenty of facts about the ferruginous hawk and many photos, so people are

more aware of the birds of Pincher Creek.

The work of the team involves nest monitoring and tracking the hawks in four areas, including southern Alberta. Two or three researchers work in our area from March to mid-August.

They hope to promote conservation through awareness, determining the role of climate change and taking steps with industry and the government to alleviate the problem.

The team has done many presentations like this before, as they’re useful to let people know what’s happening in their own backyards.

Presentations will go on every Tuesday until March 25, thanks to the library, the Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council and Alberta Parks. Those in other communities can watch by videoconference from other libraries.

Take in the fun on Minor Hockey Day

By Brad Quarin This Saturday is Hockey Day in Canada for Pincher Creek and Crowsnest Pass, as minor hockey games will be played and the community can support children going into the sport.

“It’s just a fun way to celebrate the game of hockey and to have fun!” says Jeff Kaupp, general manager of the Pincher Creek Huskies. Minor hockey players range from age five to 17 and 18, and he thinks having many age groups is great, as

younger players can look up to older ones.

Raffles and 50-50s will be going all day in the arena during the games, which start in the morning. All money raised is donated to KidSport Pincher Creek.

Starting at 6 p.m., there will be a hockey skills competition, with all minor hockey clubs participating. Young players will try out some tricks in scoring goals, trying for the hardest shot. This activity is just for fun, as there won’t be winners

Passtrack results for January

By Ritch Braun The second Golden Bear Open Track Meet, hosted by the University of Alberta, took place on Jan. 25. It was for athletes who were bantam age (12 and 13) and younger.

Two Passtrak athletes, both bantam boys, competed in a total of 11 events.

Tim Jorgensen had three races and three field events. He placed 23rd in the 800-metre race in 3:22.02, 18th in the 200 in 33.34 seconds, and 15th in the 60 in 9.62 seconds. He finished 17th in the high jump by clearing 1.10 metres, then placed eighth in the shot put with a toss of 6.96 metres. His final event was the long jump, where he spanned 3.61 metres for seventh place.

Noah Schuh rewrote his personal-best book throughout the day. He competed in five events and produced a lifetime best of 2:58.42 in the 800 metres, which was a five-second improvement, placing him 12th. He then increased his long jump by 33 centimetres to 3.48 metres for 13th place, and added 20 centimetres to his high-jump best by finishing with a 1.20-metre clearance for 10th place. He also placed eighth in the 60-metre hurdles in 13.39 seconds, and 17th in the 200, clocking 33.20 seconds.

Jack Simpson Open Track Meet A rare Sunday-only competition was hosted by the University of Calgary on Jan. 26.

Six Passtrak athletes took advantage of the opportunity to produce some high-quality results.

Keely Anderson took part in her first official track meet in the 10-and-under girls age group.

She finished in 11th place in the 60 metres in 12.29 seconds, and then moved up to fifth place in the 150 with a time of 34.13 seconds. Her third event was the 1,000 metres, where she finished in fifth spot by running 5:26.15 — a new Passtrak club record for her age group.

Mosese Ratudradra had three events, as well.

He competed in the 11-year-old boys category. He placed fifth in the 60 metres in 11.12 seconds, and sixth in the 150 in 30.98 seconds. He then chopped a full five seconds off his previous best in the 1,000 metres by finishing in 4:57.08 for a well-earned third place.

Tim Jorgensen had two events in the 12-yearold boys group. He took eighth spot in the 60 metres by running 9.71 seconds, and ninth in the 150 in 25.01 seconds.

Ty Anderson also competed in the 12-year-old boys group. This was his initiation into track and field competition, so he set personal-best performances that he will attempt to surpass in future meets. He ran 11.03 seconds in the 60 metres for 12th place, and 28.72 seconds in the 150 for 10th.

In his third event, the 1,000 metres, he placed ninth in 5:25.29.

Alisi Ratudradra contested two races in the 15-year-old girls division. She ran the 60 metres in 8.53 seconds for third place, and 44.67 seconds in the 300 for second.

Tate Kenny competed in the men’s open age group. He ran 8.45 seconds in the 60 metres for ninth place, and 46.10 seconds in the 300 for 17th.

High expectations can motivate youth

Some of us would dream of becoming an astronaut or a veterinarian; some of us imagined of having children of our own or travelling the world. Expectations placed upon us by others point us in the right direction and are a critical step towards our dreams becoming reality.

If the expectation is not there to grow, strive and achieve, then finding the right path and the motivation to travel down it can be a daunting task. Without these expectations from others, an individual may not have enough wind in their sail. When the adults in a young person’s life (parents, school staff, neighbours, coaches) have high expectations of them, it is amazing how much more empowered they become. They get to experience the pride that comes alongside
