My Little Corner Occasionally my editorial space becomes an avenue to explain different aspects of our business, and this week I’m going to take the opportunity to discuss the commercial printing facet of Shootin’ the Breeze.

When creating a business plan for the Breeze, one of the most significant considerations was how and where the paper would be printed. Printing on newsprint at an outside facility was an option, and would have been a less expensive and less time-consuming one.

However, choosing digital printing on white paper allowed us to create a unique look, with vibrant colours, and a different standard for our advertisers. This is what I was after.

There’s also a significant degree of pride that comes with following through every single stage of production – from idea generation to packing brightly-coloured papers, fresh off the press.

With a smaller paper this week, the press run will take about eight hours. Copies of the Breeze come out of the machine folded and stapled – the completely finished product you are holding in your hands right now – and ready to be counted for distribution.

Printing the Breeze takes up at least one full business day every week, and the rest of the time the press-room equipment is kept busy with a variety of commercial and personal print jobs.

A significant change made this winter was dropping the associated business name Mountainside Printing. Whether you were the client or the staff member answering a phone call in our office, it was confusing to have two names under one roof.

The original intent was to have a second name people would associate solely with commercial printing, but I’ve learned people more readily associate everything we do with the name Shootin’ the Breeze.

Often I hear, “I didn’t know you could do that,” or “I don’t even know what commercial printing is,” which is why I thought it was a good time to bring some attention to this service.

Personal printing we’ve done has included invitations for birthday parties, anniversary celebrations and weddings, thank-you cards and even Christmas letters. We work with each client to create a meaningful design for their special occasion. Cheques and envelopes are also popular items, and a new trend is cards with personal information and photos.

Commercial printing jobs include bag stuffers, bookmarks, brochures, business cards, calendars, catalogues, cheques, business forms, envelopes, flyers, gift certificates, labels and stickers, letterhead, magazines and booklets, menus, newsletters, placemats, postcards, posters, price tags, rack cards, reports, tickets and more.

Each item is custom designed for your business and receives the same attention to detail that goes into the paper. We can print, cut, fold, pad, perforate, laminate and UV coat whatever you need created.

When I think back to the huge building that housed the press and finishing equipment at my parents’ paper, the Nipawin Journal, it’s amazing to see what we can do with a setup that fits into 300 square feet.

The cutting equipment we had way back then could easily lop off a hand if you weren’t careful, and now we’re protected by laser beams that won’t allow the blade to come down if anything is crossing it. I’m accident prone, so this is likely a good thing!

This facet of the business is growing and, through this bit of shameless self-promotion, I’d like to let you know what we offer.

A Prohibition-era cocktail party Crowsnest Museum and Archives is proudly hosting a temporary exhibition, on loan from the Peterborough Museum and Archives, entitled The Noble Experiment: Temperance and Prohibition. It is open to the public until May 3.

The exhibit looks at the history of Prohibition in Canada, and helps to give a national context to one of the most colourful periods in the history of the Crowsnest Pass.

It nicely ties in with our permanent exhibit, Legends of Prohibition.

The Noble Experiment also brings a formal interpretive program with it, created for secondary school students looking at the effects of alcohol on individuals and society. This program allows participants to examine the reasons people of the past might have chosen to vote for a “wet” or a “dry” province.

To launch the exhibition, Crowsnest Museum will host a Prohibition-era cocktail party on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m., featuring live music, appetizers, door prizes and a viewing of the new exhibit. Come in your best 1920s Prohibition getup, enter our costume contest and visit our cash bar — for medicinal purposes only, of course!

Dogs put their noses to work

By Brad Quarin A variety of dogs played the part of scent hound when the Southern Alberta Working Herding Dog Association introduced the sport of canine nose work to the area.

The club held three classes on the sport in January at Cowley Community Hall, and it may be the start of a new series of challenges.

“It was very encouraging,” says Judi Snowdon, a founding member of SAWHDA and dog behaviourist at the Shadowbar Shepherds training school, off Highway 22.

“All dogs can do it — big dogs, little dogs, old dogs, young dogs, blind dogs,” she says. Among the dogs building up their sniffing skills were German shepherds, Labradors, a shih-tzu, Australian shepherds, a sheltie and a Boston terrier. “They’re all impressive.”

Unlike the scent hurdle races the club has previously had, where the dog searches for its owner’s scent, the dogs are using their noses to find a wintergreen scent. They search a course and a little vehicle, the challenge for their owners being to motivate the dogs.

Each animal was a star, but during different classes, Judi says. A dog that doesn’t know what it’s doing in one class may master nose work in another.

Canine nose work has been practised in the United States for a while, but in Canada goes back only around five years.

The local dogs will keep practising their smelling for April or May, when SAWHDA will team up with a Lethbridge club for dot tests. In dot tests, around 14 rubber tubs will have holes, one of which will have the scent the dog is sniffing for.

Generally, SAWHDA is doing well, recently tying for first place in a scent hurdle race in Spruce Meadows during the Alberta Kennel Club dog show.

The legendary Canadian artist, along with Adrien AuCoin on bass and vocals, presents his style of folk, bluegrass and Celtic music Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Fort Macleod.

J.P., long respected as a master of stringed instruments, discovered his musical passion at the age of five, when he began to teach himself guitar. By age nine, he’d won a guitar competition against musicians three times his age. By his midteens, he was able to play almost every stringed instrument he picked up. By 16, he’d recorded his first bluegrass instrumental album.

While working as a session musician in the United States, he graced the famous Grand Ole Opry stage more than 20 times, performing with such legendary artists as Vince Gill, Waylon Jennings, Earl Scruggs, Bill Monroe, Charlie Louvin and Marty Stuart.

Today — after 30 years of touring, and with 14 solo albums released since 1995 — J.P.’s vast talent has left him with a large and loyal fan base around the globe.

Way to grow, baby!

By Brad Quarin Every year, there are different new and expecting parents in Pincher Creek, and once again, Parent Link is reaching out to them with an educational fair next week.

Way to Grow, Baby! is in its seventh year in Pincher Creek. It is put on by the Early Childhood Mapping Project, a program of Alberta Education teaching people about the importance of the first years of a child’s life.

Jacqui Bruns of Parent Link says it’s a popular and great event. “To have it free, have a meal provided, have all these experts, that’s pretty awesome.”

For the first time, Parent Link can host it at their Family Centre in Ranchland Mall, as they now have the space. As well, the event will now be split between two days, starting with an evening presentation on Monday.

Common response they’ve received is regret from moms that their husbands or friends couldn’t make it during the day, so they’re having their keynote speaker in the evening.

After a free supper at 5:30 p.m., Dr. Robbin Gibb from Lethbridge will give her Different Brains, Different Behaviours presentation at 6. The presentation is about how sex hormones affect the behaviour of parents and their children.

Robbin has been a guest before, and is impressive. Her visit is sponsored by Mental Health.

The next day, the prenatal and infant health fair runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a variety of sessions and speakers. Subjects include yoga, baby massages and making your own baby food. A session on postpartum depression will be held by Brenda Coffell, with tips about how to deal with the problem, such as taking walks.

The event is meant for expectant parents and parents of children under age one. Free care for children under six is provided by Early Childhood Mapping, and transportation can be provided. There will be door prizes and free photo sessions with the babies.

Anne Gover of Parent Link points out that Way to Grow, Baby! is made possible through the co-operation of numerous organizations. These include Brighter Futures, St. Michael’s School, Canyon School, the Cowley Lions and the Rotary Club, with donations from Shell and help from individual volunteers.

Wildlife officer takes charge of huge territory

By Brad Quarin John Clarke’s work as a Fish and Wildlife officer around Crowsnest Pass has paid off, as he’s been promoted to the role of district officer for the Blairmore district. He also serves as acting district officer for Pincher Creek.

That puts him in charge of a huge area. It includes all of Crowsnest Pass, west to the British Columbia border, east to Highway 22, south to Waterton and north to Chain Lakes.

The promotion in early January feels good. “I’ve been working towards this for the past 25 years,” he says.

He feels he’s worked hard for it and demonstrated a passion for his job, which won over the committee in Edmonton who interviewed him. Much of his work to date in dealing with problem wildlife, enforcing the laws and educating the public includes participation in the BearSmart program and bringing in the bear dogs.

As district officer, John will be in charge of some staff and responsible for creating a work plan, mapping out what he feels is most important and setting goals. “That’s the big picture,” he says. He’ll also be working closer with stakeholders in the community.

For now, John has his hands full patrolling and responding to complaints that come in. The job is always busy, he says.

Canyon School strives to upgrade playgrounds

By Brad Quarin Canyon School is reaching out to parents and others in Pincher Creek interested in improving the school’s playgrounds.

Ideas, donations and volunteer services are needed to make a dream of better playgrounds a reality, with the children standing to benefit.

“We need them to be active, we need them to be busy and we need them to be doing all those things that their bodies need to do,” says principal Carole Goodreau. “They have to hang and climb and swing.”

Such activities support their physical health and development, and renovations would be good for the whole community since numerous groups meet at the school.

Canyon School has two playgrounds, one for kindergarten to Grade 3 and another for Grades 4 to 6. They want both renovated, with old equipment removed and replaced with several new pieces of “high-density” equipment. That means more children can play in the space.

The process began nearly two years ago, when Canyon School applied for a grant from the Community Facility Enhancement Program. In January 2013, they learned they would receive $84,000 — if they could match that amount within 15 months.

A year later, the school has raised $40,000, and while they might be able to get an extension, Carole would like the project to go forward by May. Much of the money raised by the school so far was donated by Shell and the Community Foundation of Lethbridge.

The efforts have already borne fruit, as three tire swings were replaced with a Beehive last fall. Carole describes the Beehive as “a huge net” that children can climb and swing from. “That piece of equipment is always busy.” While it’s placed on the older students’ playground, the younger ones love it, too.

The Beehive took a day to set up, thanks to parents and donated gravel.

The children in the neighbourhood eagerly watched their progress and rushed to play on it when the adults announced it was safe.

To keep up the progress, Canyon School is sending out letters in Pincher Creek, searching for new grants and sponsorships, and taking donations of any size.

At the end of the campaign, Carole estimates, it’ll take a weekend for the volunteers to rebuild the playgrounds. Many of the volunteers are parents and grandparents, no doubt motivated by their children.

Donations of gravel, use of bobcats and cement will also come in handy when the “build weekend” comes.

The open house at the station, across from the municipal library, runs from 6:30 to 8:30 and is open to anyone interested in joining, along with their significant others.

Jamie Wilkinson, the deputy fire chief, says there will be an orientation consisting of a guided tour of the hall and a PowerPoint presentation.

Children who come with their parents will be interested to see the trucks.

The department, which handles both fires and backcountry rescues, has about 50 members, and having 55 is preferable, says fire Chief Steven Munshaw.

They’re looking for men and women with community pride and an interest in helping their neighbours. Interested people will find out what kind of commitment is expected. Steven says significant others should come, because volunteering for the department affects the family.

The open house is a first step to joining, after which there would be an interview and physical-fitness test. The positions aren’t full time, but there will be hourly wages for practices and call-outs.

Learn about protecting bull trout through a healthy watershed

By Brad Quarin The next presentation in the winter speaker series on our biosphere will focus on the bull trout population of the Oldman River.

Matthew Coombs, a fisheries biologist responsible for the region of the headwaters from Waterton to Willow Creek and Oldman River, will be at the Pincher Creek library on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Those in other communities can watch by videoconference at their local libraries.

“I am really thankful to have the opportunity to work to manage and conserve fish and watershed resources in such a beautiful place,” Matthew says.

The presentation will be mainly about the quality of the watershed and its relation to the fish, such as bull trout, westslope cutthroat trout and mountain whitefish.

“Native fish depend on similar watershed values as we do, like natural patterns of river flows and clean water, so threats facing native fish are something we should all be concerned about,” he says.

Problems can be caused by fishing, land use and other factors.

“Rapid declines in bull trout abundance and distribution over the last century suggest watershed health is not what it was,” he says. “Protecting bull trout means protecting the same watershed values that we all rely on for the water we use.”

This is the first time Matthew has presented on this specific subject, but he’s discussed similar issues with the Oldman Watershed Council and Hillcrest Fish and Game.

Presentations will go on every Tuesday until March 25, thanks to the library, the Pincher Creek Community Adult Learning Council and Alberta Parks.
